Yes absolutely he's just collecting mentors. Ruby also definitely calls Wallace 'dad' once on accident and they both stand there awkwardly before Ruby goes home and yells into a pillow

#wallace seems evasive like ruby so i bet any bonding between them is undercut by wallace going man. i didnt sign up for your issues #i once listened to a podcast that had an interesting take that wallace runs away from his problems as much as ruby does #and while i dont think thats completely true theres definitely similarities between them and it makes their relationship really fun #like how winona and sapphire are both straightforward #i also like the idea of ruby and sapphire naming their kids winnie and wally after their mentors. thats been my headcanon since like 2015

however also interesting that she's still choosing not to live with her family. especially since im kinda convinced her grandma + parents + older brother all live together. her mother being a housewife could signal that her family's more traditional- which makes her grandma being mentioned an interesting detail.

the intergenerational model of "the younger generation takes care of the older" isnt as common in japan as it used to be but it definitely was common! at some point! and family's still a pretty important part of life in japan even without that! if kotoko's family leans on being more traditional its likely her grandma lives with her parents, supported by her father. and her older brother would live with their parents to support both their parents and their grandmother. i have no idea why ive absorbed this into my brain so solidly as canon when its entirely possible that might not be the case.

but anyways. if that rings true it means kotoko is the outlier to this- for some reason she's living separate. why are you alone, kotoko? did you get away? did you "escape"?

this is absolutely a low bar, but at least in chainsaw man when the female characters do bad things, they look like the rest of the characters. theres not suddenly an old hag or whatever who is sexually assaulting denji. morality isnt linked to physical appearance there, and i do think its a good thing the creator didnt dumb things down for the audience
