2024 Ice Hockey Women's World Championship: A Primer
When: April 3rd to April 14th. The schedule here will tell you when games are taking place both in your local time and venue time.
Where is it taking place?: Utica, New York
Where to watch:
For the first time, we will have ALL games broadcasted in USA and Canada. I am not sure how many games are going to be broadcasted outside North America, but we can reasonably assume they will at least carry their home country games
TSN will carry all games in canada
NHL Network and ESPN+ will carry a mix of the games together. See The Ice Garden's Michelle Jay's tweet for the schedule of which games are where.
SVT (Sweden)
Discovery (Finland)
Czech TV (Czechia)
Magenta (Germany)
TBS (Japan)
Swiss TV (Switzerland)
If you are not in any of these countries, or you are but are struggling to find a way to watch, please feel free to DM me and I will do my best to find you something
What is the tournament format?:
There are two divisions, Division A with the five ranked teams going into the tournament and Division B with the next five. Each division plays a round robin style ranking round, and at the conclusion the bottom two teams in Division B will be relegated, while the rest automatically make the quarterfinals. Quarterfinals will go A1-B3, A2-B2, A3-B1, A4-A5. In addition to the finals for gold that will take place, there will be a bronze medal game and a fifth place game for ranking. Standings will use a three point systems.
Who is in each division?:
Division A: USA, Canada, Czechia, Switzerland, Finland
Division B: Sweden, Japan, Germany, China, Denmark
Who are each teams?
Here is where it gets long. Below the cut I will tell you each teams roster, how they did last year, their reasonable goals, notable roster changes, and three players to watch. I will do my best to keep this informative, but brief.
USA
Roster:
Tumblr media
(Text version available here)
2023 Result: Won Gold
2024 goals: Win gold again
Notable roster changes: This team continues to go very very young. Abby Roque is the most notable roster omission here. Top defender Lee Stecklein is also not on this roster, due to her taking a break from the National Team. Amanda Kessel was also left off, but she has not been active within the last year as a player, so not entirely surprising.
Three players to watch: Grace Zumwinkle has been one of the stars of the PWHL so far, and is likely to get more responsibility on the national team than ever before, so keep an eye on her and how she may translate her successful season to the tournament. Rory Guilday may only be 21, but she is heading to her third senior world championships, a long time favorite of the team USA coaching staff with her shutdown defensive skills who they'll hope can take another step this tournament with Lee Stecklein absent. Joy Dunne is the youngest player on this roster, just 18 years old coming off a 24-18-42 season in Ohio and a national championship. This will be her first senior level tournament, and I'd expect her to get ample offensive opportunities.
Canada

2023 result: Silver
2024 goals: Gold
Notable roster changes: Micah Zandee-Hart is the most surprising one after being on the roster for a few years. Claire Thompson is absent as is Rebecca Johnston, but that is more expected while Thompson is finishing medical school and Johnston has not played in the past calendar year. Cousins Nicole and Julia Gosling join the team after strong rivalry series showings.
Three players to watch: Natalie Spooner is the front runner for PWHL MVP, so everyone will be watching to see if she continues to score at the rate she has been. Expected number one overall pick in the upcoming PWHL draft, Sarah Fillier, will be playing in her last showing before the draft happens as she finished out her college season. Nicole Gosling was the highest scoring defender in the NCAA this year at Clarkson, going 14-25-39 in 40 regular season games, so seeing how she impacts this blue line is a must watch.

2023 result: Bronze
2024 goal: upset their opponent in the semifinals and make the finals
Roster changes: The bad news is top defender Dominika Lásková is out with injury. The good news is star goaltender Klára Peslarová is healthy unlike last year, as is blueline mainstay Tereza Radová. Alena Mills retired from the national team. Kristýna Pátková did not make the team this year, in her place comes Boston University commit Anežka Čabelová who had a stellar U18 worlds. Karolína Kosinová did not make the team, in her place is HV71 assistant captain Klara Seroiszková.
Three players to watch: 17 year old Adéla Šapovalivová was the highest scoring u18 player in the SDHL (Sweden's highest level league) this year and one of their top scorers in general going 11-18-29 in 32 regular season games. She was also a key part of the U18 team that upset Canada in the semifinals to advance to Czechia's first ever u18 final. With Mills retired, she will get more minutes at her third (!!!!) senior worlds. Next up is Klára Peslarová, and if you're not familiar with her game, she is straight up a top five goaltender in the world. She just came off a stellar season with Brynäs IF in Sweden where she had a .935 save percentage in 20 games, and has been consistently stellar on the international stage as well like when she had 55 saves against the united states at the olympics. Kateřina Mrázová is a fantastic playmaker has been a bright spot on a Ottawa tam that has struggled to find itself, and is also one of the most veteran members of this squad. If they win, she'll have to lead the way.
Finland
Roster

2023 finish: Fifth Place
2024 goals: Bronze
Roster changes: Two of their key offensive pieces Elisa Holopainen and Michelle Karvinen, are back and healthy this year! Susanna Tapani is also back on this team. Those are three absolute big pieces that completely change this roster for the better. A few depth roster forwards were left off in their place, most notably Kiira Yrjänen. Defense has more shakeups. Sini Karjalainen is a notable omission and long time defender Rosa Lindstedt retired. Eve Savander, Oona Koukkula, and Siiri Yrjölä slot in.
Three players to watch: I've consistently been a very big Elisa Holopainen fan and I think she's one of the best players in the world and not talked about nearly enough. Just as she began to really shine in the international stage, she got hit with injury, but as she's come back with year she dominated Finland's league going 32-25-57 in 19 games. I think I've put her as a player to watch like every year I've done a preview and I'm going to keep going it. Finland has faced a lot of questions about their goaltending following Räty and the team going their separate ways, but right now, it is Sanni Ahola's crease to lose. She was stellar in the three games she started last year for Finland in the world championship and was solid for st cloud state with a .935 save percentage in 17 starts this year. With Lindstedt's retirement, Krista Parkkonen will see more minutes, coming off a breakout sophomore year in a university of vermont program that's developed a decent amount of international blueliners.
Switzerland

2023 result; 4th place
2024 goals: bronze
Roster changes: quite a lot of shake up. no Caroline spies as their mainstay backup, Alexandra Lehmann takes her place. No Sarah Forster, who wore an A and led their defense last time around. She only played 7 games in SWHL this year, so likely injury is at play.
Players to watch: it is, of course, the Alina Müller and Lara Stalder show until it isn’t. So, besides them, the players to watch are Andrea Brändli is another “top five goaltender in the world” to know, sporting a .937 in her first year playing in Sweden post a stellar college career. 18 year old Ivana Marie Wey just had a great year playing pro as Stalder’s teammate and will be important for the next Swiss wave. With no Forster, Lara Christen will take on a lot of the top defensive minutes most likely.
Sweden
Roster

2023 results: sixth
2024 hopes: return to group A
Roster changes: no Sarah Grahn which isn’t entirely expected but still a big change, in response Ida Boman gets the call. No Fanny Rask or Olivia Carlsson, who retired.
Three players to know: Ebba Hedqvist is a 17 year old elite center coming off a great performance at worlds and has an eye for playmaking that will be critical for Sweden. Maja Nylén Persson is the #1 defender of team Sweden that has consistently been the top defender by points in the SDHL and won defender of the year in 2022-2023, and she is only 23 years old. Another part of Sweden’s insane center depth is Lina Ljungblom, who will likely play in Montreal next year and had 46 points in 36 regular season games. In the various tournaments/friendlies that Sweden has played leading up to this (ie five nations cup), she has 10 goals in 15 games. These three players are truly some of my favorite in hockey right now
Japan
Roster
Tumblr media
(Text version available here)
2023 result: 7th
2024 hopes: return to group A
Roster changes: honestly we mostly running this back. One or two u18 add ins but overall the same as 2023
Players to watch: stop me if you heard this before but Akane Shiga is very good. The PWHL Ottawa player is the only player from Japan to score against the USA, and will continue to be japans biggest threat. Another big player is Haruka Toko, one of the SDHL’s top scorers this year who had established herself as a top talent in the last two years. This year, the 27 year old had 13 goals and 30 assists in 36 games in Sweden this year. She was one of seven players in Japan to play in Sweden this year, a year that saw a new high in Japanese players going overseas to play. That also includes my last player to watch, Yoshino Enomoto, who played in switzerland and still put up around a point per game on a team that struggled (they folded in the offseason then came back and built their roster late and were ultimately relegated, but she was a bright spot in her first season there)
Fun fact: did you know three pairs of sisters play on this team? Akane and Aoi Shiga, Haruka toko and Ayaka Hitosato, and Rio and Riri Noro
Germany
Roster
Tumblr media
(text version available here)
2023 Results: Eighth
2024 Goal: Make quarterfinals and avoid relegation
Roster changes: Both goalies behind Abstreiter last year, Chiara Schultes and Johanna May, did not make this roster with Hemmerle and Loist taking their place. The d core remains the same besides Daria Gleissner taking Heidi Strompf's place. National team vet Marie Delarbre is absent with injury, Sonja Weidenfelder did not play hockey this year and her status is uncertain, and Anne Bartsch did not make the roster. In their place we have Emily Nix, Lilli Welcke, and Lucia Schmitz.
Three players to watch: Luisa Welcke was with Germany last year, but has a second season in the NCAA under her belt and a nice depth player performance at Boston University. She will have more chances to show off her offense this tournament than in the NCAA, and I'm excited to see what she can show. Jule Schiefer had a revelation this year in the German league. From last year where she only scored 4 goals in 20 games, this year she scored 22 in 24. Let's see if she can continue this at worlds. Nina Jobst-Smith will play big defensive minutes for Germany after finishing her fourth season at Minnesota Duluth, this time serving as an assistant captain, and was nominated for 2023-24 All-WCHA Third Team. She's a two way defender who will be taking on big responsibility for Germany as she has in the past.
China
Roster
Tumblr media
(Text Version available here)
2023 result: Promotion from Division I
2024 goal: Make quarterfinals and avoid relegation
Roster changes: Oh boy. So, like, a lot of people, and here is why: up until this tournament, China allowed dual citizens not born in China to play for them. This includes some players you may know from PWHL/NCAA like Leah Lum, Hannah Miller, Rachel Llanes, and Tia Chan. Going into this tournament, they changed the rules and those players will not be eligible, so it is a significant roster shakeup.
Three player to watch; This team is very young. Yifan Wang is 16 years old, and in her international debut scored 10 goals in 5 games in the WJC-D2A U18. This is obviously a gigantic step up in competition and very hard for a 16 year old to be playing against adults on the highest level stage of women's hockey, so I don't imagine she'll get a TON of ice time, but she is worth looking out for. Xin Fang is the veteran and star of this roster, who had 2 goal and 2 assists in the teams D1A tournament that earned them their promotion. 17 year old Dartmouth commit Grace Zhan is who I expect to be their starting goaltender. Born in Beijing, she spent the past year playing Minnesota High School Hockey and put up top numbers in a league that sees a lot of NCAA recruits.
Denmark
Roster
Tumblr media
(Text version here)
2023 Results: Promotion from Division I
2024 hope: Make Quarterfinals and avoid relegation
Roster changes: Long time national team star and centerpiece of the team Josefine Jakobsen will no longer play for Denmark, though she will continue her club career.) Otherwise, despite some depth changes, it is mostly the same lineup.
Three players to watch: Frederikke Foss had a great year at Shattuck St Mary's u19 program and has committed to UMaine, and may be able to spark some offense Denmark will desperately need without Jakobsen. Silke Lave Glud will also be expected to carry the offense after her stellar year in the Tier 2 league in Sweden, and lead the way for younger players as one of the most experienced members of the team. Goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström's performance at the D1A worlds was a big reason for their promotion, and she is coming off a great sophmore year at st. lawrence university where she had a .931 save percentage in 36 games and 7 shutouts. If Denmark wants to stay in the top division, she will need to steal a game for them.

Knights' Cowan carries momentum from Leafs camp into OHL
Easton Cowan is off to a great start in the OHL with 27 points in 14 games. The London Knights centre spoke to TSN about what he learned from Toronto's best players during his first NHL training camp. The 18-year-old also outlined his goals for the rest of the season and explained why he actually enjoys the pressure of being a Leafs draft pick.

drawn arrows unseen
part 12 / previous installments/tags
That spring, Mason follows U18 worlds closer than he usually would. He holds the time difference between Ontario and Germany in his head. He texts Connor after games. He reads between the lines of every TSN article, twitching every time somebody calls Adam Fantilli a man among boys, the same thing they always say about Mason. Are he and Connor hanging out? Can Adam pick up his scent?
He wants Connor to win. But he hates that Connor’s winning without him, wearing the jersey without him, racking up his own Ws separate from his and Mason’s perfect 9-0 record together. When Canada loses in the quarterfinals, Mason feels a little patriotic indignation, but mostly relief that it’s over.
After the Memorial Cup, Mason’s agent takes him to dinner, asks him about whether he wants to suit up for Canada at the rescheduled world juniors in August.
“Most guys with a shot at the NHL next season are skipping it.” Patrick bisects the asparagus stalks on his plate with one smooth cut of his steak knife. “Guenther, Power.” He forks up an asparagus tip. “Even Wright.” He looks at Mason with caution on his face. “The timing is…”
“I’m going.” Mason cuts him off. It pops out of his mouth on instinct, so fast it surprises him.
“You played all the way through June this year.” Patrick rests his knife carefully on the edge of his plate. “Have you thought about…”
“I’m going.” He can still feel the bruises from the Mem Cup, the twinge in his knee, the strain in his shoulder. He’s got, what, three weeks? Maybe four? He’ll heal. Fuck an offseason.
“I can talk to Anaheim about it,” Patrick says, skeptically.
Mason picks up his knife and slices through his steak. “Make it happen.”
Later that evening he starts second-guessing himself. What if he gets hurt? What if it fucks up training camp for him, and Anaheim sends him down again? It’s stupid to play in the tournament just because he doesn’t want Connor to do it without him. It’s stupid to put himself right back in the torturous position he was in December, right back in range of Connor’s scent.
Well, at least he can do something about that.
He waits until an opportune water break and asks Giroux if there’s a doctor around town, someone guys go to for dynamic stuff.
G side-eyes him. “What are you looking for?”
“Suppressant.” Mason tips his head forward and squirts water over the back of his neck.
“You going to Hulk out this year?” Giroux smirks. That’s why guys usually go on suppressants. Too many fights, too many of the wrong kind of PIMs. Too many dumb decisions.
Mason drops his water bottle behind the bench. “Something like that.”
He gets a text with a contact later that afternoon. Mason saves Claude Giroux’s number in his phone with a brick emoji because that’s what he smells like.
The doctor asks what his concerns are and Mason tells her he’s going to world juniors next month.
“Are you due for a rut?” the doctor asks, typing away.
“Could be.” Mason doesn’t even know what due means or how he’d tell. “More like I don’t want anything to trigger it.”
The doctor nods. She explains how the drug works, pointing her pen at the bar graphs on a slick brochure she unfolds.
“It’s going to dull your reactions, but it won’t have much effect on your dynamic traits. Nobody with a dynamic is going to mistake you for a beta.” The doctor half-laughs, like it’s an absurd possibility to begin with. “There are some topical products that can help if you’re concerned about masking your scent, but they’re not subtle. Should we talk about that?”
“Nope.” Mason’s not worried about that. Connor can’t smell him.
The doctor circles various chunks of text on the brochure, asking him about shots and pills and implants. “Gimme the shot,” Mason says immediately, rolling up his sleeve. No evidence, no pills on the counter of their hotel bathroom. His shoulder throbs as the doctor slowly injects the suppressant into his muscle. He cherishes the discomfort. It feels like a little fuck-you to his body. Think you can control me? Sucker. He’s going to go to world juniors and he’s going to win another seven games with Connor and he’s going to sleep peacefully with the scent of ice and cedar all around him.

Shoresy s01e01 Never Lose Again cold open
the opening scene is a BroDude segment on TSN titled ‘Questionable Call’ hosted by Anik* (yes, THAT Anik,) where they discuss the dirtiest moves and the dirtiest players in hockey, with each presenter’s hot takes intercut with footage of Shoresy with his team, the Sudbury Bulldogs. The panellists, two of whom we have met before, are Tessa Bonhomme, Ryan McGonaggle, and Jay Onrait. Onrait seems to be the buttmonkey of the panel.
*Anik has a last name, now: Archambault. it’s trivial, but it’s a precedent: unlike Letterkenny, where all but a handful of characters are mononymic, almost everyone in Shoresy has a first and last name.
As part of the discussion of ‘who’s the dirtiest player?’ (Shoresy, obvs.) we find out that Shoresy cries, like all the time, especially during the anthem, that he likes to drop a deuce not only before the game (which we knew,) but in between each period, that he snaps at least a couple of twigs per game, and he has a ‘patented move’ called ‘the potty kiss’, where he waits until his target is hanging a piss in front of the urinal, then bounces the dude’s head off the wall in front of him. the panellists discuss the current state of Shoresy’s career, emphasising the severity of his behaviour on and off the ice. their conclusion is he’s where he belongs; in ‘Senior Hockey hell’. One element that’s not explicitly discussed, but that we see in the footage of Shoresy, is that he’s the captain of his team. that fact is important to note due to his loss of the position in the next episode, and the impact it has on him when he regains it later.
this opening segment is jam-packed with so much information for what is honestly only a couple of minutes. the visuals, coupled with the surface details we’re given through the panel’s dialogue, work together to convey a truly complex picture of what’s going on, more than either could do on its own. we see a Shoresy who’s putting in the work to win, only to be ultimately treading water. his violence with his hockey sticks is a pointed illustration of how frustrated he is, locked in this holding pattern and getting nowhere.
if you think i’m giving a lot of undue attention to the cold open, hold that thought. this episode is front-loaded with all this information on purpose, and it serves as a roadmap for the rest of the episode, and indeed the series. everything that gets mentioned by the panel we get to see on screen, explicitly; Shoresy does actually cry, multiple times, and he talks about his crying freely and with a refreshing lack of machismo; his frustration with the club and the coach is what kick-starts the plot of the show, driving Michaels and Nat into the first steps of folding the team; and while he puts pressure on his teammates to shape up, he’s willing to do whatever it takes to get the W, and G-d help anyone who tries to fuck with one of Shoresy’s people.

another wjc 2023 update
hey everyone!
i'm gonna talk about all this stuff on the podcast later this week but i wanted to make a small post about all the news about to come out this week
selection camp roster announcement and team canada wjc schedule
from the mayor, who covers the kings,
Tumblr media
i personally expect the announcement to come ~12 pm est and/or 12 pm local time (ast). last year i'm pretty sure it came out at 2 pm est, which is 12 pm exact mst (edmonton's time zone)
that means we officially have a full look at what camp and the rest of the tournament will look like!
dec 1st: wjc selection camp roster announced
dec 9th-12th: selection camp occurs in moncton
dec 19th: first team canada pre-tournament game in moncton
dec 26th-dec 31st: wjc preliminaries begin
jan 2nd-jan 5th: elimination rounds
i also found a tweet that contained the full pre-tournament schedule, which may or may not be on tsn (i actually don't know, keeping an eye on that)
Tumblr media
2. roster size
per corey pronman:
Tumblr media
this means the team will probably take only 1 extra forward, 1 extra dman, and 1 extra goalie
so anyone on the outside looking in right now (i'm thinking like zach l'heareux or chase stillman or conor geekie) are unlikely to make the team
this applys to all teams though, so it's looking like trouble for any underage forwards not having great seasons.
3. brandt clarke's status
after the 9-8 mess of a game la played last night, they're also playing against arizona today (i think it's a back to back with travel). considering how awful the dcore was last night, they should be looking to make some changes to it. it's in my opnion that if brandt clarke plays tonight against arizona, that ends the hopes for him making an appearance at wjc. they wouldn't be burning his elc year if they truly thought that he was going to end up going to wjc camp in like two weeks. they have called up jordan spence as well though, alongside some other dmen, so it'll be interesting to see which route la ends up taking there. should be informed of the lineup later today.
4. shane wright's status
i haven't seen as much about this as i maybe should have? but as far as i know, with morgan geekie's injury, it's likely that wright gets into the montreal game at very least before heading to wjc camp. he may not head to wjc camp at all with how well he's been playing. the kraken haven't called up anyone to replace geekie yet. that being said though, they have continued to win without geekie and wright so perhaps the staff will finally make the right decision and just let him go to wjc. i don't know though, it all depends on what they think
5. switzerland wjc selection camp roster
Tumblr media
interesting to see lian bischel here after he famously denied going to the summer tournament for the swiss ice hockey federation. perhaps this is a sign that relationships can heal though, and hopefully we get something of that sort with brandt clarke and hockey canada

‘Stadium Showdown’ in San Diego, ‘NLL Watch Party’ Alternate Broadcast Bring NLL Front and Center
Tumblr media
Sports fans will be able to experience lacrosse like never before over the next few days as the National Lacrosse League (@NLL), the world’s largest and most successful professional lacrosse league, readies for two innovative events this weekend with Saturday’s long anticipated “Stadium Showdown” outdoor game at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, and Monday’s “NLL Watch Party” alternate broadcast on ESPN+ and TSN+.
The “Stadium Showdown” (Saturday, 4:30 p.m. ET / 1:30 p.m. PT) between the host Seals and Las Vegas Desert Dogs, is the largest production in NLL history, with 13 cameras including Spider Cam, four participants and an official mic’ed up and 11,000+ seats up for grabs. Seals defender Cam Holding (Whitby, Ont.) is credited with coming up with the idea for the game, in which a box lacrosse configuration will be set up on the outdoor playing surface. The celebration of the indoor game, played outdoors, can be seen live on ESPN+, TSN+, FOX5 in San Diego, KVMY Ch. 21 in Las Vegas, and on same-day rebroadcast on ESPNU at 11 p.m. ET.
The firsts continue on Monday night as ESPN+ and TSN+ will simulcast “NLL Watch Party” beginning at 7 p.m. ET Monday in addition to the regular broadcast when the Toronto Rock visit the Philadelphia Wings. The #NLLWatchParty will feature NLL broadcasters Pat Gregoire and Teddy Jenner with a series of guests including Jack Hannah (Milford, Ohio) of the Desert Dogs and Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, B.C.) of the Seals, fresh off their Stadium Showdown experience, breaking down the live contest, discussing their own careers and their teams’ prospects for the rest of the season as well as the NLL and lacrosse in general.
The two games are part of a week that also features the Bandits vs. Thunderbirds standalone NLL Game of the Week on TSN on Friday (6:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. AT, also ESPN+) and potentially a deep playoff preview with two of the NLL’s 8-2 squads in Rochester and Toronto squaring off in Hamilton (Saturday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN+, TSN+).

'A spectacular moment': Canada's World Juniors gold medal celebration continues
Dylan Guenther's golden goal set off a grand celebration inside and outside of Scotiabank Centre in Halifax Thursday night, as Team Canada beat Czechia 3-2 in overtime, claiming its 20th IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship gold medal.
Fan Matt Doudelet said it was a magical hockey memory to last a lifetime.
“Since I have been a kid I have been watching the World Juniors," said Doudelet. "I'm 31-years-old and I’m cheering for 18-year-old kids. It’s amazing, and I couldn’t be happier.”
The Canadians started the game strong, entering the third period with a two-nothing lead.
The Czechs rallied midway through the third, scoring two goals in 54 seconds to tie it up.
“I wasn’t really expecting that ending, but it was a fantastic time,” said fan Quinn Ransom. “Canada takes the gold once again — fantastic for everyone.”
The enthusiasm for the World Juniors shown by fans in Moncton, N.B., and Halifax earned high praise from the president of the International Ice Hockey Federation.
“All the community and all the city are involved," said Luc Tardif. "Moncton and Halifax, they give an atmosphere.”
Halifax and Moncton co-hosted the tournament, which started on Dec. 26, 2022.
Max Mazzotta and his step-daughter flew into Halifax for the final few games of the tournament.
“This is unbelievable. Canada wins gold while we’re in Halifax,” he said while inside a bar after the game. “The crowd was electric. The whole arena was electric. And this has been spectacular. It’s a moment to remember for the rest of my life.”
The World Juniors was also a huge win for downtown Halifax. Many restaurants, bars and hotels were jam-packed.
According to Halifax Regional Municipality Councillor Tony Mancini, the hospitality industry received a much-needed economic boost.
“The pandemic has been tough for everyone, especially our small businesses," said Mancini. "They had years of lost revenue and this is going to be a big help.”
For the past 12 days, Mancini was all over social media soaking up and sharing his World Juniors experience.
“That’s the loudest I’ve ever heard that arena and I’ve been going [to] a lot of sporting events," said Mancini. "I’ve never heard anything as loud as that.”
Grant MacDonald, the local event lead for the tournament, says it was a great night and a great couple of weeks for the Maritime region.
“The response from the community, the fan response, seeing it, feeling the energy in Scotiabank Centre last night, but also at Avenir Centre in Moncton, plus fan fests in both cities. It was just an electric atmosphere in the Maritimes during the World Juniors,” he said during an interview with CTV Atlantic Friday afternoon.
Hockey Canada confirmed to CTV News Friday that 98.6 per cent of available tickets were sold in Halifax and 74 per cent were sold in Moncton — sales MacDonald describes as “exceptional.”
“We knew that the event was going to be a success. But, boy oh boy, did Maritime hockey fans ever come out,” he says.
In a region without an NHL or CFL team, hosting the World Juniors in Halifax and Moncton, N.B., was a big deal.
Many fans were dazzled by MVP Connor Bedard, of Team Canada, who smashed a tournament record but refused to make it about himself.
“We’re not talking about me,” Bedard said in a post-game interview with TSN. “We just won the biggest tournament in the world and I love this group, I love this country and this city right here has been unbelievable.”
The game fell on captain Shane Wright’s birthday. He gave himself the second goal, and in return, Halifax gave him and team Canada a party that lasted into the early hours of Friday morning.

Women's Worlds 2023 Primer
The PHF season may be over, but many of the players we love will be playing in women's worlds this upcoming week alongside their peers from the PWHPA, SDHL, Naisten Liiga, NCAA, Usports, EWHL, and countless other fantatic women's hockey leagues or organizations from around the world!
When: April 5th - April 16th
Where: Brampton, Ontario at CAA Center. Games will be in Eastern time
What Teams are playing:
Group A: Canada, USA, Switzerland, Czechia, Japan
Group B: Germany, Hungary, France, Finland, Sweden
How to Watch:
Canada: TSN will be broadcasting all games in the tournament for Canadians
USA: NHL Network will be broadcasting all of Team USA's and Team Canada's games, but not the rest of the tournament
Finland: Broadcast scheduling here
Germany: German games should be available at MagentaSport (and apparently free!)
France: Sport En France should have at least the French teams games
Sweden: SVT should carry Sweden's games
Switzerland: available to stream at srf.ch
Unfortunately I could not find broadcast information for Czechia, Hungary, or Japan, but that may be a language barrier issue on my end. If this is something you are familiar with please let me know!
Lastly, if you want to watch a game that's not available to you, feel free to message and I can see what I can do to help
Tournament format:
All of Group A makes it to the quarterfinals, so the preliminary games are just seeding for them. The top three seeds in Group B will move on as well. Then, the knock out stage looks like this:
Tumblr media
Below the cut is rosters, notable storylines, and expectations for each team. These are in alphabetical order.
Canada
Roster
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Natalie Spooner comes back after missing time with pregnancy. Danielle Serdachny makes her international senior team debut after having 71 points in 40 games as Colgates captain this year. Claire Thompson returns to the world stage after missing last world championships, comes off a spectacular olympic showing. Potomak is out, despite strong performance last world championship.
Player to watch/other fun things; Sarah Fillier. She has been one of the world's best goal scorers for over two year and, at only 22, will likely only get better
Goals: Win gold again! They've been dominate on the world stage again since the break from the pandemic, working extremely well with their new coach. They are the team to beat with a mix of vets and newcomers
Czechia
Roster
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Klara Peslarova, star goalie for Czechia, is not here due to season ending knee injury. Michaela Hesova (who is only 17 years old!) makes her senior team debut in her place and Kateřina Zechovská comes back to the mix. Tereza Radová is out, Sára Čajanová returns. Klára Jandušíková makes her senior national team debut, one of the few ncaa dIII players to do so!
Players to watch: Tereza Vanišová is coming off a PHF championship where she scored the cup winning goal, and has been one of the Czech republics more creative offensive players that plays with an edge. Natálie Mlýnková just had a breakout year for University of Vermont that saw her have 42 points in 36 games.
Goals: Get a medal. Czechia has risen FAST on the national stage, going from not qualifying to medaling in their first wwc in just a few years. Thanks to a mix of a good core who's been playing together a long time like like Mills/Mrázová/Križová and talented youth like Čajanová, they have cemented themselves at one of the worlds threats.
Finland
Roster; http://leijonat.fi/index.php/maajoukkueet/naisleijonat/2022-23/mm2023/item/45144-naisleijonien-mm-joukkue-julkistettiin-taessae-kokoonpano ( no graphic :-( )
Notable changes: Elisa Holopainen will not play for Finland after a great showing last worlds due to injury. Susanna Tapani, who had five points in 6 worlds games last year, is also not on this roster. Sanni Ahola will make her senior national team debut as a goaltender for Finland. She had a .920 as the starter in St. Cloud state this year and could be interesting as they try to find their next starter. Emilia Kyrkkö is another new goalie, who played in Finland this year but will play at St. Cloud next year. I’d expect Ahola to get more time though. Michelle Karvinen not on roster. Lots of roster shakeup overall.
Players to watch: Noora Tulus has been a national team mainstay for some time, but the last two years she has found another gear. Coming off a club season in Sweden with 56 points in 32 games. Sini Karjalainen had a breakout season in Vermont, will be interested to see if she can translate in the world stage.
Goals:After a rough few tournaments and roster turmoil, and some coaching questions, Finland is trying to get back in Group A and compete for a medal. Competition will be fiercer than ever but they look to prove why they dominated so long.
France
Roster:
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Marion Allemoz, who was the team captain, has retired. Morgane Rihet, who was also an assistant captain and mainstay, is not on the roster. Margot Desvignes makes her senior team debut after some strong showings in Sweden.
Players to watch: Chloe Aurard is /the/ player for this team, being a star over at Northeastern the past few years. Justine Crousy Theode, who plays in the mens division in France, will be interesting to see if she gets any starts. With no clear starting goaltender, the 22 is making her senior team debut after strong performances at the u18 level
Goals: Get their first top division win. After being promoted to Division IA in 2013, they've slowly risen to finally qualify for the primary WWC tournament for the first time since 2019! Despite tournament cancellations from the pandemic, they've kept their momentum as they look to establish themselves as a mainstay in the top division. In 2019, they did not get a win, so they hope to do so this time.
Germany
Roster: https://www.deb-online.de/2023/03/24/frauen-nationalmannschaft-finaler-kader-fuer-weltmeisterschaft-in-brampton-kanada-nominiert/ ( once again no graphic :( )
Notable changes: Going even younger in goal, swapping out lilly Uhrmann for Chiara Schultes, no Tanja Eisenschmid though her sister Nicola is there. We do have university of Maine twins Lilli and Louisa Welke still though!
Player to watch: Nina Jobst-Smith (listed as Katerina) had a breakout year in university of minnesota duluth, with 25 points in 39 games. Sandra Abstreiter is a goaltender who has proven she can steal a game.
Expectations: Similar to hungary below, finish top three in their division, hopefully with two decisive victories, to move on to the semifinals.
Hungary
Roster: https://www.jegkorongszovetseg.hu/noi-valogatott-megvan-a-vb-re-utazo-25-fos-keret
Tumblr media
Notable Changes: Very much a run it back roster with little changes. Like its basically identical to their one from last year
Players to watch: Mira Seregély was already a steady contributor for Hungary, but after a breakout year in University of Maine, we may see her take another step. Same with Taylor Baker, a shutdown defender who had a solid season in montreal this year.
Goals: Finishing top three in Divison B to clinch a semifinal berth. They've done so their past two outings, but last time was on a tiebreaker. The past two tournaments they've only had one win in each preliminary round, so trying to secure two would be big. Keeping the group together to try t build on exisiting chemistry will be key.
Japan:
Roster: https://www.jihf.or.jp/common/img/info/info_20230324_153025.pdf
Notable changes: Similar to Hungary, they are running it back. Most of their changes come from adding some younger players to their forward group, including twin sisters Rio and Riri Noro making their national team debut after strong performances at the u18 level
players to watch: Haruka Toko is forever my answer here as I think she's one of my favorite players to watch in terms of her speed and shot, and she's coming off a season that saw her return to the SDHL and have 27 points in 29 games. Ayaka Hitosato also is coming off a successful first season in the SDHL, and it will be interesting to see how that affects her game.
Goals: make the semifinals! last year was a heartbreaking 2-1 shootout lost in the finals they hope to avenge, and have proven they are capable of it
Sweden:
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Most notably, long time captain Michelle Löwenhielm is not on the roster. Sara Grahn returns after missing some time on the national team, will be interesting to see how they divide time between her and Söderberg. Ebba Berglund, Jessica Adolfsson, and several other no longer on the teams defense after being in the last few tournaments, so going for a new look there.
Player to watch: Maja Nylén Persson has become the #1 defender for the national team at 22 years old and is coming off a stellar SDHL season. Sara Hjalmarsson was over a point per game at providence college this year.
Goals: Win division B and try to make it to the semifinals. After a few rough years due to labor rights issues, the national team is trying to find some stability again and figure out their identity as they develop a young core.
Switzerland
Roster:
Tumblr media
Notable changes: Not many, mostly concentrated in the forward group. Evelina Raselli has retired since last wwc, which is the big one.Sarah Forster makes her return after a strong season in the PHF.
Players to watch: For years, it has been the Lara Stalder and Alina Müller show, rightfully so as they are two of the best hockey players in the world and it is a gift to watch them together. We have also seen young defender Lara Christen have strong defensive performances in the past few tournaments, getting it done on both ends
Goals: Medal for Bronze again, hopefully by improved depth scoring and defense. In the past it has been their top line and Brändli who has carried them, so they hope to supplement their high end talent with a good supporting cast.
USA
Tumblr media
Notable changes: A lot of babies! Players having babies, including Alex Cavallini and Kendall Coyne Schoffield. Then a lot of players who are very young, with 6 players being under 20, including new faces Abbey Levy, Gabbie Hughes, and Tessa Janecke to name a few. Brianna Decker has retired. No Hannah Brandt, grace zumwinkle, jincy dunne, maddie Rooney, or Jesse compher. HUGE shakeups here.
player to watch: Taylor Heise won player of the tournament last year, and has continued to dominate at the NCAA level, she may only be just beginning. Gabbie Hughes makes her senior team debut after several great years at Minnesota Duluth, and will be interesting to see how she fits into the roster.
Goals: Win gold again, especially with a new look with John Wroblewski at coach. He was the coach last tournament, but only had a few months to work with there. They looked improved under him already, so we will see how they look with a full cycle

his favourite player to watch right is victor hedman (he also thinks that hedman is the best defenceman in the world rn)
had a rink in his backyard and that's how he fell in love with hockey
he would pretend to be crosby while on that backyard rink (owen arent you supposed to be a defenceman lmao)
not a big tv/movie guy, he mostly just watch's sports during his downtime (why am i not surprised)
he like to golf but is "not very good" (his handicap is a 10 which is appenrently good so)
if he weren't a hockey player he would be a lacross player
lebron is the athlete he dislikes the most
he doesn't say (chirp) much on the ice (once again i am not surprised lmao)
if matty and him got the chance to play each other at worlds (they didn't cause matty was scratched the first time and injured the 2nd) someone would have gotten whacked in the leg/foot but nobody would have really said anything
Tumblr media Tumblr media
basically Michigan could very easily have 2 players picked in the top 5 and 3 players picked in the top 10. and if you haven't realised how special that class is, they also have thomas bordeleau and brendan brisson in it, which means that they're soon gonna have 4 first rounders in one class, and 6 nhl draft picks. (for context a lot of teams don't even have 6 drafted players on the entire roster)

what is up with pierre luc dubois? (a scrapbook)
Tumblr media
This is the closest, I think, that the NHL has felt to the NBA. There's rumours, there's clashing personalities behind the scenes. It's a soap opera. There's intentional sabotage, back-room deals. This has been a very interesting saga in the NHL. (Staff & Graph Podcast 26.01.21)
idk anything about the blue jackets, but i do think the narrative of a young player blowing up his public image to exercise some agency over his life is weirdly compelling.
the timeline
okay in december, lebrun reports that dubois is looking for a trade.
Tumblr media
31/12/20. dubois, who has been in contract negotiations all through the offseason, signs a very team-friendly bridge deal (2 yrs, $10 million) which seems to be aimed at making him easy to trade.
dubois says he’ll be professional about it. everyone is sure he’ll be professional about it, etc etc.
JM: It's gotta be such a difficult situation while [Dubois is in Columbus].
EF: Well, I think that he'll be a pro.
JM: Oh, I have no doubt that he'll be a pro. Listen, I've followed this guy going back to junior and everything about him is [professional]. I remember he was seventeen years old and listening to trainers from other teams. I'd talk to guys from other teams, and they'd say this kid - this sixteen, seventeen year old kid - he does activation like he's a pro, like he's a long-time NHL-er. I'm with you. Everything about Pierre Luc-Dubois is pro-style. (31 Thoughts podcast. Jan 13 2021)
22/01/21. dubois has that game where he plays abysmally - clearly no effort or interest at all, incredibly lazy - for 3 mins 55 secs and then gets benched for the rest of the game. everyone’s up in arms. general consensus is that he deserved the benching but there’s maybe something going on. he even gets a special bonus steve dangle’s dang-its video all to himself.
Tumblr media
SD: And I have a question because I have never seen this in any sport. Maybe you guys can tell me an example. Has a player ever so obviously not tried in any sport? To the point where their team was like, we shouldn't even have to pay this guy? I want to know. I want to know just for precedent... And you might say, what's the big deal? It's not the first time a professional athlete has ever given a poor effort out there. Yeah, poor effort versus literally not trying!!!
torts explains why he benches dubois and it’s not unreasonable:
Tumblr media
23/01/21. the big trade goes down.
Tumblr media
not really relevant but my personal fave article on this thing because it’s dramatic and brings up the nhl’s aggressive conformity issues.
Tumblr media
24/01/21. sportsnet runs a surprisingly emotional post-trade interview with dubois in which he says: it had nothing to do with torts; his parents are thrilled he’ll be in the city; he had a great relationship with his teammates and they were v supportive, etc. he also genuinely looks like he’s tearing up? hope the guy’s alright in winnipeg. (transcript)
PLD: At some point I thought there is Pierre-Luc Dubois the hockey player, and Pierre-Luc Dubois the human. I wanted to stay true to myself, to my teammates.
25/01/21. kekäläinen goes on leafs lunch on tsn radio 1050 saying that he has no idea why dubois wanted to leave and he wishes that dubois had just told him:
JK: There was nothing about these negotiations [that caused a problem] and I wish that Pierre-Luc would tell the truth about why he wanted out. He hasn’t even told me; he hasn’t told his teammates or anybody else. It certainly wasn’t about contract negotiations; I can assure you of that.
the theories (aka the fun stuff)
1. contract negotiations went bad
the blue jackets have a well-established history of hard bargaining with rfas or as gm kekäläinen puts it “using the hammer” in negotiations. as an rfa with no arbitration rights, dubois didn’t have a whole lot of leverage. unless he got an offer sheet (extremely unusual and goes against all the gms’ nice gentlemen’s agreements), dubois’ only real leverage was to refuse to sign a contract and not play. obviously that comes with a lot of other issues that he’d rather not deal with.
it’s not exactly surprising then that dubois spent the offseason in increasingly strained contract negotiations with the blue jackets. it wouldn’t be the first time this soured a player on a team - see ryan johansen and josh anderson. that said, loads of players get into contentious contract negotiations and get over it fast. everyone involved in the situation says that this wasn’t the problem. not sure this one holds a lot of water.
2. he wanted to play in a bigger market
I don't think it has a lot to do with the negotiation. I heard from a player that in Columbus they knew that this was an issue before [the negotiation began]. I don't think this was about the negotiation. The thing I've gotten is that apparently he just wants a bigger stage.
The first [explanation] was that the negotiations went bad, and I'd heard it wasn't that. And then, you saw last year in the playoffs that he'd battled with Tortorella at times. So, okay, was it a Tortorella thing? Someone said to me it's not solely that. You'd be wrong to say that it's simply a Tortorella thing.
I think what it is - for whatever reason - I think he wants a bigger stage. I think that that's kind of what we're looking at here. (Elliotte Friedman on SN960 radio. Jan 4 2021)
this is the easiest and tbh i think a not unlikely explanation. in a nice canadian market (apparently his first pick was the habs), dubois could be something akin to a super-star. hard to resist for a 22yr old.
ofc he ended up going to the only nhl city without an airport. equally, he want from top-line star center in columbus to probably second line in winnipeg; if he was looking for stardom it doesn’t seem to have worked out.
3. he hates tortorella
torts is famously very demanding with a “tough love and public humiliation” approach to coaching. torts had clashed quite publicly with dubois in august, lots of angry yelling on the bench.
dubois himself has said repeatedly that his relationship with torts was fine and that he was very grateful for torts’ coaching (see post-trade interiew). aaron portzline from the athletic said the same thing:
Tumblr media
mostly this seems like an easy, kinda lazy narrative. again, seems unlikely.
4. he didn’t get on with his teammates
there’s a fair bit to suggest that there was something more going on here, more than torts or the contract. jeff marek dropped this particularly cryptic hint:
JM: There are always mitigating factors. Now, I’m with you. I don’t know that we have a clear picture of what has happened on in Columbus. After we talked about it on the podcast... I got a note from someone, who works in the industry, who says, “I heard your podcast. I’m not going to give you any details, but you’re right. There’s more to this story.”... This person said, “I know more of this story. You guys are on the right track. We may never know the complete story, but there’s more to this than just someone that just wants out.” (31 Thoughts Podcast. Jan 22 2021)
some people have linked this to the fact that the blue jackets have several very vocal maga trumpists on the team. i’ve seen people say they’re q-anon supporters? idk about that, but just going off twitter likes there’s definitely a fair bit of trump support and covid-denying going on: nathan gerbe and seth jones for sure; max domi probably; brandon dubinsky and zach werenski seem at least right-leaning. by contrast, pld seems pretty anti-trump. that could make for a non-ideal locker room.
again, dubois has himself said that his teammates were supportive. is this just wishful thinking from fans? probably. who knows. not me.
5. he was homesick
most of the teams that dubois was reported as being interested in were canadian. he ended up going to winnipeg where his parents live. his dad is a coach for the manitoba moose (the jets’ affiliate) and family are apparently very close.
Tumblr media
it’s a bit flimsy, but i wouldn’t be surprised if part of this was a 22 yr old francophone canadian struggling in columbus, america.
bonus: patrik laine
just as bonus drama, there have been long-time rumours about clashes between wheeler and laine. they’re right back in the spotlight again with allegations that wheeler and scheifele (cap and alternate cap) created a toxic lockerroom and bullied laine out of winnipeg. obviously rumours are just that, but they’re good drama and worth mentioning. this whole thing is wild.

kj x op: the primer
yes...it is in fact, time.
kj: aka kent johnson. from port moody, bc. besties with connor bedard. went 5th overall in the 2021 draft to columbus. studying sports management. messy eater. pouty and flirty boy. likes weird edm music
op: aka big dog aka pow aka odp aka big o aka owen power. from mississauga, on. besties with jamie drysdale, shane wright, cole perfetti, etc etc from the gta. went 1st overall in the 2021 draft to buffalo. studying sports management but he has no idea what that is. wears glasses. likes country music. would in fact like a truck.
owen and kent first meet when they both become freshmen with the university of michigan wolverines:
Tumblr media
owen is big, tall number 22 there, and kent is the shorter number 13. owen is 6'6" and kent is 6'0"(he confesses that the umich roster people pump his stats by saying he's 6'1").
SO LET THAT SINK IN
THEIR HEIGHT DIFFERENCE IS HALF A FOOT
that is perfect head resting height for kent, and does in fact inspire many headcanons from me.
kent and owen start really getting close when they end up moving in together at an off-campus house, with 5 other guys on the team (portillo, briss, lambert, lapointe, and one more who i cannot remember)
again, there's not much from their freshmen year BUT have a gif of them showing their little crushes in a celly:
Tumblr media
tell me this isn't love???
here's a clip of kent talking about how he and owen train together after games and how big he is too
so not much: but you can see their little crushes growing, especially from kent's side :)) who periodically went into owen's old insta photos to leave flirty comments on them
THIS IS WHERE IT ALL PICKS UP THOUGH GUYS
BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ONLY IN LOVE BUT OBVIOUSLY SO BECAUSE OF THE SOCIALS COVERAGE ON THEM
okay so first we start off, in the preseason. they're still living together, confirmed by kent and owen, with jimmy lambert and phil lapointe. kent does in fact confirm that they share a bathroom (as if that's important) in an athletic article diary. they even go to quinn hughes' beach house together
the first little tiny bit of content we get about them and their relationship was the time they Literally got caught holding hands on campus and walking to class:
Tumblr media
we tinhatted about that here, because owen doesn't have his signature glasses on or a backpack so we all deduced that he's either a) just being a good boyfriend and walking kent to class or b) kent is carrying all of his stuff for him
not really a tidbit but we got some pics from kent in that athletic article and yes i am going to believe that's a broken *** dresser in this pic:
Tumblr media
and that's just the BEGINNING.
they walk in together, owen finds excuses to touch kent in the hallway for no reason, "surrender the outcome" etc etc etc, there's so much lost game tape of them interacting too.
wjc camp starts and things start getting even more serious. kent is unfortunately not there due to covid protocol, AND OWEN FREAKING SAYS THE PIECE DE RESISTANCE THAT MADE EVERYONE LOOK AND SAY BOYFRIEND SHIT
here's owen power admitting to calling kent johnson every day, sometimes multiple times a day
LOVE. they're in LOVE. and it is obvious now from both sides, kent and owen's, when in freshman year, it was mainly just kent
this continues throughout the tournament. owen calls kent "one of his closest friends" - i analyze it more here
there's photos of them showing their height difference:
Tumblr media
AND of course there's the ever iconic clash of owen and kent's music taste (which owen "hates")
and the mason mctavish "leave room for jesus" gif:
Tumblr media
they even have little inside jokes about owen's music vs kent's music!
even though world juniors was cancelled early, it gave us some wonderful content of owen and kent together and pretty much confirmed their relationship
not to mention how AFTER, they did an interview with tsn where they squeezed together in kent's tiny room and did some flirting in practice and did some codependent plane shit together
Tumblr media
and now they're going to the olympics together! good for them!!! they're gonna go be in love there together!!!
if anyone has any more questions about them to give to me, i'd be HAPPY to discuss them with you, and i hope you guys enjoyed this primer :))
i'll leave you with this photo where they are gently bonking each other's heads and whispering to each other, oblivious to everyone else around:
