Leona Info Compilation part 28: Leona, Epel and Vil (pt 1)
We do not see Leona and Epel interact much outside of Halloween when a possessed Epel “boops” Leona on the nose, but Epel speaks of him often: He says that, while Leona spends a lot of time during Spelldrive club practice lounging, he is always paying close attention to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Floyd ties Epel to a gravestone to attract ghosts Leona is quick to go to his rescue, with Ace pointing out, “You talk like you don’t care, but the first thing you did was untie Epel. You actually look out for your own people, don’t you.”
There is a vignette where Epel is reading a book as he walks, which causes him to run directly into Leona. A nearby Pomefiore student expresses worry but Leona does not react, and Rook observes, “A king knows how to be magnanimous.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During his birthday Epel says that he would want Leona to be his older brother for how he his laid-back personality is so different from his physical appearance, how his so intelligent, so cool, how he is always looking out for him during Spelldrive club practices and is a leader that can be relied upon.
(Interestingly Idia claims that, while both Vil and Leona are “tanks”, neither are suited to leadership roles, perhaps betraying how little he understands his fellow classmates.)
Epel says that he likes “cool, strong animals like tigers and leopards,” so he might just have a thing for large cats in general.
Tumblr media
Vil compliments Leona almost as much as he insults him, often in the same line of dialogue, saying “The only thing you have going for you is a handsome face” he could “make an eye-catching main model if we leverage that air of smug superiority he gives off," “One of Leona’s precious few fortes is is the sheer power of his presence”, and “Leona is little more than a good-looking layabout.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A kanji-based joke on JP asking Leona if he isn’t sure he’s actually an egg and not a prince at all (the kanji for egg and prince are very similar) was changed to comparing him to a jester on EN due to language restrictions.
(Yana has a thing for intentionally incorporating egg references into the game wherever she can, more here)
Leona and Vil have a lot of overlap during Phantom Bride where they both refuse to go to Idia’s aid, and when Vil changes his pronouns and speech patterns in the “role” of a prince for Eliza Leona responds, “Who are you and what have you done with Vil?" and "I’d take the regular you over this slime ball.”
(Due to language restrictions this interaction had to be rewritten on EN.)
When Eliza is explaining how they simply do not compare to her “darling Idia” both students interrupt with the insistence that they are “Obviously superior!”, while Jade observes, “Looks like they’ve lost sight of our objective.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both Vil and Leona express annoyance about being dismissed in favor of Idia.
When Idia begs them for help they respond, “It sounds like you’ve found someone who loves you in spite of your bad attitude” and “Good on you for finding your soulmate.”
(Leona is rejected for not realizing that Eliza expected him to join her in a duet. In a moment of foreshadowing Leona says, “That shut-in prolly can’t even sing!” In reference to Idia, but it is revealed during the Glorious Masquerade event that he can.)

New Ideas Into Poker Games Instructions Never Prior to Revealed
There are heard that will I am nowadays banned from all public meetings involving the Council in County Hall unless of course I sign a great undertaking not in order to film which may be 'enforced'. For the question of setting-up costs, as considerably as 'webcasting' is definitely concerned, I believe this would be quite very low and could be used from the significant PR budgets each Council spends just about every year (and might be far extra useful); and, regarding course, allowing associates of the general public to record and film would expense nothing at most - In the meantime, I will probably be continuing my very own efforts to help to make Carmarthenshire Council extra transparent. As ever, several Councillors do try to make a new difference and the attempts should be recognised but they happen to be the very very few and include nothing named above. I actually presume that because they (the Chair and Chief Executive) - had taken aside Cllr Caiach's attempts to dining room table a motion in order to debate the morning club a few moments prior to this instructions it will have viewed slightly undemocratic in order to pass one a few minutes later on to adjourn typically the meeting for my removal - thus the correct procedure was quietly and conveniently brushed apart.
The original dropping sand game was developed in 2005 and even various versions had been wildly popular online for a number of years. While job development is a new life-long process, typically the adolescent years are usually a critical moment for youth to learn and confirm their career choices, which usually is seen as a key turning point in a? s life. These kinds of pool filters should have the sand altered once every 3-5 years depending on the frequency using which the swimming pool is used and even any factors of which may make pool dirtier, like close up proximity to fresh construction. Air trying performed at Ankle Base Balad, War (the large Balad burn pit run there and has been shut down throughout 2009) detected improved particulate matter and sometimes some chemicals, which can have been due to the business in Iraq. We commend them issues logic and notice how this may sound good being a press release, especially in times during the warfare or anarchy, yet it falls short when it shows up to reality on this situation.
Just intended for one to know, cypress trees are very effective in soaking up sound waves. Many, I know, are experimenting with webcasting council meetings, yet this petition, found in the interests involving democracy and openness goes somewhat even more. There were zero grounds for typically the council to behave as they performed nor the law enforcement. Incidentally, the thorny question whether to charge Blue Marker holders to area continues to be deferred, apparently lawyers are being consulted and there is thus many Councillors that will have to state a they will not have a émancipation. On closer evaluation I see of which Cllr Gravell, the Leader, still money in over 49000 and Cllr Madge, Deputy Leader continue to enjoys a tone under 34000 whilst Cllr Scourfield, Fellow member in charge regarding Planning has manged to incorporate an additional 200 or so to his takings getting them to some sort of whisker under 32, 500. She and Cllr Arthur Revealed are the simply two Councillors who else regularly challenge typically the nonsense spouted on in County Corridor.
I notice that will the Council features just published the particular allowances and charges of it's 74 County Councillors for 2010 to 2011. By simply my reckoning typically the totals are truly down by 14, 369 from 1, 381, 779 in 2009 to 1, 367, 410. Organic wastage signifies that generally there will be much less employment down typically the line for each of our children who currently find it extremely hard to find job now. A exclusive contribution of this particular study was your pursuit of school-level economic disadvantage and weight problems by adolescents? individual-level SES and race/ethnicity based on some sort of large sample of economically and ethnically diverse children coming from five school schisme and 30 middle section schools in central Texas. Determine the exact mass of the sample. learn free here 안전카지노사이트 The WAG will collate every one of the submissions from almost all 22 Local Authorities in Wales plus probably provide suggestions (an indication regarding the projects we can take forward) sometime after the Assembly elections inside July 2011. Full consultation will carry place on an individual project basis because the MEP goes forward. This will not just relate with Carmarthenshire County Council of course but includes all Welsh Private sector organisations. On 4th October 2010, typically the County Council's Professional Board resolved "to commence consultation in the Blue Marker proposals placed inside the report and that a report be submitted in due course".

Then & Now (Ethan x MC)
Summary: A particularly difficult case forces Ethan to confront a blast from his past
A/N: This popped into my head and I had too much fun writing it. I will loosely incorporate some of the themes from book 3 and make them better, but this is mostly an AU.
A/N 2: Yes I’m writing another multipart fic while actively ignoring my others. The muses spoke and I had no choice in the matter. Enjoy!
~v~
“Would you like some more coffee, Dr. Ramsey?”
Whatever line he was reading in his textbook blurs as does his vision. Ethan looks up at the face of the newest member of the team, a young resident, Isabelle. He takes the cup, not missing the way her eyes light up as he does so. What is it with residents and their incessant need to kiss-ass and be people pleasers?
“Thank you, Dr. Proctor.”
“Of course! I figured we’d need all the caffeine we could get our hands on with this case.”
Ethan doesn’t respond with words, only offering the young woman a hum in acknowledgement. Instead his eyes land on his coworker, Harper Emery. “Harper, has your team been able to come up with anything new?”
“Nothing,” Harper replies with a resigned sigh.
“You have got to be kidding me.”
“I’ve run as many tests, MRIs and CT scans as I could, and none of them came back with anything conclusive. We’re officially back to square one.”
Ethan hasn’t been this stumped in years. A week ago, a patient came to Edenbrook after waking up without being able to feel anything from the waist down. A young, relatively healthy 25 year old with no extraordinary medical history, no recent reports of any TBI, nothing. He assumed with Harper–one of the nation’s greatest neurosurgeons–on the case, that this would be a simple fix.
As painful as it is to admit, he’s wrong.
They’ve gotten nowhere with the case, they’ve made no progress, and to make matters worse, he has Leland Bloom and the board breathing down his neck because it’s been years since the team has spent more than a week on a case, so a week with no news reflects poorly on them—on him, as the team’s leader specifically.
The last member of the team, Tobias, clears his throat. “Did he ever mention getting into a fight? Maybe he took a hit to the head, and just doesn’t want to admit it?”
“Maybe, but like I said, none of the CT scans or MRIs showed me anything out of the norm,” Harper says. “I can always ask him again.”
“That’d be ideal–”
Ethan’s sentence is cut off as the door to their office is thrown open, and in walks Leland. “Hello, team!”
The most senior members of the team stay silent, but Isabelle gives a slight wave. “Hello, Mr. Bloom.”
“Dr. Proctor,” Leland greets in turn. “Nice to know at least one of you has manners.”
Ethan checks the time on his watch. “What are you doing here, Bloom?”
“Last time I checked, I owned this entire building and I didn’t need to ask your permission to be here.”
“We’re nearing midnight,” Ethan adds. “What are you still doing here, and not at home? I’m sure Mrs. Bloom would enjoy seeing you.”
Leland ignores the mention of his wife Caroline, pretending like she wasn’t mentioned at all. “I just stopped by your patient’s room to see how he was doing. And then I decided to drop by to check in with you guys. Are there any updates on the Miller case?”
“I’m not discussing patient information with you,” Ethan says.
“Well, I am your boss.”
“And until you go to medical school, graduate, become a doctor at this hospital, and join in on this case, I don’t have to tell you anything. You may own this hospital, but I do not have to discuss my patients with you.”
“Okay, so you guys have no new information,” Leland concludes.
Ethan pinches the bridge of his nose in annoyance, this conversation giving him a headache even though it just started. “We were actually in the middle of a brainstorming session before we were interrupted, so if we could have some privacy again, that would be much appreciated.”
Ethan’s tone causes Leland to drop the veneer of kindness, the smile dropping from his face only for a second before he catches it. He looks away and sniffs haughtily. “Fine. I’ll check in with the patient tomorrow for a status update, since it’s clear I won’t be getting it from my employees. Thankfully, his father and I go way back.”
“I can’t stop the patient from divulging his own information.”
Leland glances around the room one more time, his gaze lingering on Ethan a bit longer than it does on the other occupants. “Goodnight, doctors.”
Once Leland leaves, Harper turns towards Ethan. “You act like it would literally kill you to be nice to him.”
“Be nice for what? Bloom thinks we owe him undying loyalty and infinite ass kissing because he bought the hospital. He’s pulled a lot of nonsense since moving into this position, but he’s not worth breaking any laws over. My patients deserve their privacy.”
“And I agree, but the extra hostility isn’t needed. The last thing we need is World War 3 with you and Bloom tearing down the hospital. Just be nice.”
“Okay, are we getting back to work or calling it a night?”
The rest of the team glances around each other. Pulling an all-nighter with Ethan while he’s in a foul mood sounds like a nightmare.
“We’re calling it a night.”
~v~
Ethan ends up falling asleep in the office, finally dozing off around 5 o'clock in the morning, surrounded by a mountain of books and the harsh light of his computer screen. The sleep is short lived though as the sound of his pager wakes him up.
He jumps up with a start, and checks the time on his watch before checking his pager. He only managed to get two hours of sleep, but he can’t dwell on that. The page is a 911 alert to his patient’s room.
“Shit!”
He takes off to the 4th floor where his patient is housed, thankful that the early morning hour means the hospital is not yet flooded with people.
Isabelle, Harper, and a nurse are already in the room when Ethan finally makes it. “What’s going on?”
“He had a seizure,” Harper explains.
“How long did it last?”
“Around 50 seconds. We administered lorazepam into his IV.”
“Could this be a new symptom?” Valencia asks. “Or something else entirely?”
Harper shrugs. “I don’t know, but I’m going to take him down to radiology for another CT scan. Hopefully this next one can actually yield some results.”
Ethan nods. “That sounds like a plan. In the meantime, Dr. Proctor, add seizures onto the list of symptoms to broaden our search criteria. Maybe that’ll help.”
“Gotcha.”
“We’ll reconvene when Tobias comes in and once we get the new CT scans back.”
There’s a knock at the door and Ethan bristles when Leland’s loud voice calls out to him. “Dr. Ramsey, can I speak to you out in the hallway?”
“With all due respect, I’d rather not.”
“It wasn’t a request, doctor. Hallway, now.”
Ethan shoots Harper a look, and she gives him a quick sympathy smile before he and Leland step out into the hallway.
They move a few feet away from the patient’s door, out of earshot before Leland lays into Ethan. “How in the hell is the patient actually managing to get worse under your care?”
The question actually takes Ethan aback. “You can’t possibly be saying his condition is my fault?”
“I’m saying he’s been here for a week now, and he’s no better off than where he was. You don’t have any information to give him or his family. Do you know how many phone calls my assistant has had to field because they want to get him transferred to a different facility?”
“We are giving him the best care possible, Leland. Just because you and his father belong to the same country club or whatever, does not mean there’ll be some instant diagnosis or treatment that he can buy...or steal. We need to do our due diligence.”
Leland is smart enough to know when a dig is being lobbed in his direction. His eyes narrow. “What are you trying to say, Ethan?”
“Exactly what I just did. Besides, why do you have such a vested interest in my team and what we do? I’m sure you have other businesses and people to micromanage these days.”
“You guys don’t make me any money yet remain my biggest cost. The least you can do is be efficient and answer my questions when I ask.”
“And like I told you last night, I know you own this place. You never let me forget it. But you buying this hospital does not mean I am here at your beck and call, now does it mean I have to be governed under anything that isn’t set forth by the American Medical Association. Now, me team is the best this hospital and this city have to offer, so back up and let us do our jobs.”
“You guys are the best?” Leland chuckles humorlessly. “Act like it. Or I’ll find someone else who can.”
The threat causes Ethan to pause. “What does that mean?”
“You heard me loud and clear, Dr. Ramsey. Loud and clear.”
~v~
“You idiot! Why on earth would you get into a fight with Bloom in the middle of a hallway?”
Ethan doesn’t try to school his bored expression as Tobias paces the entire length of the office, huffing and puffing as he does so.
“I didn’t get into a fight with him,” Ethan amends. “It was an exchange of words.”
“A loud exchange of words,” Harper adds. “In front of our patient’s room, might I add.”
“I had plans for this day to be productive, but the minute that man opens his mouth, I just–”
“We get it, you don’t like him,” Tobias interjects.
“Disliking Leland is an understatement.”
Isabelle stays silent, unable to find a good place to cut in, despite having questions. Ethan’s dislike of Leland Bloom is the hospital’s worst kept secret, but the contention has always been passive aggressive at best. And as a second year resident, she doesn’t have any background knowledge on why the relationship is the way that it is.
“I don’t like him either, but you don’t see me needling him in front of the nurse’s station!”
“Sure Leland is...obnoxious at times, but I don’t understand any of it,” Isabelle says, finally speaking up. Ethan looks at her as if he’s just now remembering that she’s been in the room the entire time. “What happened that caused this much animosity?”
Leland’s kidney disease wasn’t a major secret. Most medical personnel that worked at Edenbrook and the larger Boston area remember the huge media blitz, and all of the pomp and circumstance surrounding his hospitalization early last year. And the official story is Leland got a kidney from a family member who wished to keep their identity a secret from the public, and everyone ate it up.
Only a handful of people know the truth. That a few well placed phone calls and dollars exchanged got Leland to the top of the donor list within a day, stealing a second chance from the true person at the top of the list: a 14 year old girl.
“So long as there is breath in my body, Leland Bloom and his ilk will never get an ounce of respect from me, and I’ll just leave it at that,” Ethan says cooly. “And that’s all you need to know, Dr. Proctor.”
“Okay.”
“I’m just saying man, Bloom is petty,” Tobias adds. “Men like him, who think the rest of us should bow at their feet, don’t take kindly to getting told off, especially in public. Underneath the billions is a tiny ass, fragile ego. Can you just keep a low profile and be quiet for the next day or two, so Bloom doesn’t dismantle this team?”
“I’ll be as cordial as Bloom is,” is what Ethan settles upon. “Nothing more, nothing less.”
The only thing that can rival Ethan’s intelligence is his stubbornness. Tobias knows it’s the best he’s going to get out of Ethan, so he relents. “Okay.”
“Good. Now can we get back to work and stop talking about Bloom?”
His team nods and Ethan sighs in relief.. They still have a chance to turn things around and actually have a good day.
They fall into a productive routine, tossing around different theories, sharing research and narrowing down ideas. Too bad that only lasts for about half an hour before there’s a knock at the office door. A few seconds later, Naveen pokes his head in.
Ethan smiles because part of him was expecting Leland to show up again. “Naveen, this is a nice surprise! Don’t tell me you’re ready to get back in the saddle.”
Naveen laughs good-naturedly at his mentee. “Not quite.”
“Well what brings you down here?”
“I wanted to talk to you for a second, Ethan,” Naveen says.
“Is everything okay?”
“Yes. It’s not about me, it’s work related. Team related news, that I wanted to tell you personally,” Naveen explains, fully entering the office. “Is there any way I could steal you for a few minutes?”
“If it involves the team, I think we can have the conversation here. Is this about my...spirited discussion with Leland?”
“No, it’s about the case you’re working on.”
“Now I know we don’t usually work on cases for this long, and we’re working on it.”
“I know. That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Leland has some concerns about how long it’s taking you guys to treat this patient, and he told me that he wants to outsource some extra help to speed things along.”
“No thank you.”
“He’s already made phone calls. I’m just here to give you a heads up about who he picked.”
“A heads up?” Ethan scoffs and rolls his eyes. Who on earth could Leland think of reaching out to that Ethan would need a warning about? “Who is he asking for? Mendoza from MK? Catherine Morgan from Stanford? The Boogeyman?”
“I don’t think I’ve reached Boogeyman levels of infamy. Well, at least not yet.”
The voice makes the hair on the back of Ethan’s neck stand up. It’s a voice he hasn’t heard in close to three years, one that he thought he’d never hear again.
His eyes snap up, locking with the large brown ones staring back at him, and all of the breath leaves his lungs at once. The last time he looked into these eyes, they weren’t full of humor like they are now, but pure fire. His chest constricts, inhaling suddenly the most difficult task in the world.
The entire room goes silent, everyone watching as Ethan and the woman stay locked in their staring contest. Isabelle’s eyes dart back and forth, hoping someone can clue her into what’s going on, but Naveen, Harper and Tobias offer zero assistance.
Isabelle takes the quiet time to appraise the stranger. She’s petite, almost a foot shorter than Ethan even with her sky high Jimmy Choos on. The second thing that catches her attention is the mess of dark curly hair spilling over her shoulders, and the amused smirk on her face, like a cat that got the canary.
The woman breaks eye contact with Ethan to look past his shoulder. “Harper, Tobias, hello. Long time no see.”
When he regains the ability to speak, Ethan grits out, “Naomi, what on earth are you doing here?”
“I got an interesting call from Leland Bloom this morning, saying that the diagnostics team was in dire need of some assistance on a particularly difficult case. Within the hour, his private helicopter was picking me up.”
Ethan takes a sterling’s breath and silently counts to 3 before talking again. “I’m not working with you.”
“You don’t have a choice. Not unless you quit.”
“Don’t tempt me.”
Naomi rolls her eyes. “Drama was never a good look on you, darling, I was always better suited for it.” She turns her attention to the young resident gawking at her, turning on her megawatt smile. “You’re new. I don’t know you.”
“Um, n-no you don't. I’m Dr. Isabelle Proctor.”
“Isabelle,” Naomi repeats slowly, letting it roll off of her tongue. “What a pretty name.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m Dr. Naomi Ramsey.”
The last name catches her attention. Her eyes flicker over to Ethan’s face, catching the way his jaw ticks as female Dr. Ramsey talks.
“I can see the wheels turning in your head as I talk, so I’ll clear things up for you right quick,” Naomi continues. “No, the last name thing isn’t a coincidence. I’m Ethan’s ex-wife." She sticks out a hand for Isabelle to shake. "Nice to meet you.”

Light Novel Club Chapter 31: Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki, Vol. 2
Tumblr media
Welcome to our Light Novel Club discussion of Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki, Vol. 2! We had a fun discussion of the first volume earlier, and with the anime adaptation giving this series some more attention, why not discuss the second volume? After all, this volume shakes up the story a bit and shows that there’s more to winning the game of life than just following along with a human player’s guide… Join TWWK, Jeskai Angel, and me as we challenge the next level of this light novel!
(Note: At the end of the post are the next light novels we will be discussing in the Light Novel Club. As a reminder, Light Novel Club discussions are held publicly on the Beneath the Tangles Discord, so anyone can join in on future discussions!)
-----
1. What are your overall impressions on the novel?
TWWK: I’ve watched the series but hadn’t read any of the light novels, so I took a leap by starting with volume two. The experience was quite different from the TV series, which made it feel almost new to me, despite the adaptation having followed the volume closely. I really enjoyed reading about the characters from Tomozaki’s point of view, as he himself is developed as a character with a pretty quick mind and more intelligent than I think he gives himself credit for. So it was a fun, brisk read for me.
stardf29: This was a really nice volume, mainly because it throws a wrench in the “Hinami teaches Tomozaki something about life, and he applies it” formula that the first volume had going. The whole student council election arc was great because not only does Tomozaki have to figure things out on his own, but his opponent is the very person that’s been teaching him the whole time! Using video game terms, it’s as if the first volume is the tutorial stage, and this is the first real level where the player is expected to play the game on his own. I’m also really liking how other characters are being developed, and in particular how Tomozaki and Mimimi associate with each other throughout all this. It expands what could have been a pretty one-note story concept into something more complex, and makes me all the more interested to keep going with it.
Jeskai Angel: It’s a strong continuation of the first volume. Coming back to read it again for this discussion, I also noticed that vol. 2 foreshadows good bit more than I realized during my first read. Finally, I know this is silly, but my inner historian just loved seeing JOHN ADAMS of all people come up in a Japanese novel. Kudos to the author for that historical reference.
TWWK: To be fair, I thought that was a tough question for a Japanese student. I mean…let’s be honest. How many Americans, even students at that age who might be taking U.S. History, would have answered “Jefferson” as the second president? But Mimimi’s point is still well taken.
Jeskai Angel: I mean, if we want to switch it around, maybe the equivalent question for Americans is “Who was the second shogun of the Tokugawa Period?” or something. LOL
Tumblr media
2. What are your thoughts on the characters in this volume?
TWWK: As I mentioned earlier, the Tomozaki in this volume comes across very differently than in the anime. His voice is more humorous and sarcastic here. I once heard Jeskai say that he thinks better of him than my favorite, Hikigaya (Oregairu), because Tomozaki is trying to better himself, and I think that’s very clear from the reading, and together with the humor makes him a fun character. He does also come across as trying just as hard in the anime, but is more obviously awkward than in the book, I think—at least how I view him in my mind while reading. The gap between Tomozaki and a top-tier character feels far less surmountable in the TV series.
Likewise, I find Hinami more compelling in the book. I thought the author did a nice job of making her a character that I empathize with, even though she’s “perfect” in all ways except for her sometimes haughty attitude. That there’s some insecurity there and questioning, particularly when she asks Tomozaki if being so good at what she does is the proper approach, humanizes her.
Finally, Mimimi, who gets top girl treatment in this volume, presents a compelling case, too. It wasn’t at all enjoyable to see her struggle in this volume, particularly in the final chapter or two. It was painful, which I think speaks to an authenticity in the development of her character. It just be that, because I don’t think it’s painfully written (it’s quite well done, I think), not do I feel like I can closely relate to her, as I never worked terrifically hard to get ahead of those in front of me academically (though I was in a similar position as her). I think she’s just in a tough spot, one that can be understood, which made for interesting reading, particularly in light of her outside self.
Jeskai Angel: Kikuchi is awesome. My biggest complaint about pretty much every volume of Tomozaki is that Kikuchi doesn’t get enough screen time. And that’s not just because Tomozaki’s descriptions of her are so hilarious. She proves herself quite insightful this time around; even though she doesn’t personally hang out with Hinami and Mimimi all that much, she makes some incisive remarks about both. I thought Kikuchi’s question, “Why does she [Hinami] work so hard to be perfect?” was profound.
Speaking of Hinami, something is seriously off with her. With the benefit of hindsight, I realized this volume reveals or expands on a lot of troubling things about her. There’s a ton of ambiguity surrounding her. Why did she suddenly change so drastically in middle school? Why does she continue to be such a perfectionist? That kind of obsession isn’t healthy at all, and should raise questions about her mental health. Plus, how can she be so two-faced, is she training to become a Batman villain, and how real / sincere is she at any given moment? Then there’s the occasional downright creepy things she says, like that remark about persuading people as the path to become a cult leader. Some of her advice to Tomozaki is legit, but it takes an increasing amount of critical thinking to sift through her words.
Hinami plays a role in my favorite Tomozaki scene of this volume. Earlier, Tomozaki told Mimimi that being number one didn’t matter so much as continuing to improve and not losing to oneself. When he reports the situation to Hinami, she responds that there’s no way he could actually believe that. “…you’re the same as me in that respect, right? You must be, if you’ve gotten that far in Atafami.” And Tomozaki comes back “…What the hell? I genuinely think that. Atafami is a battle against myself.” His advice to Mimimi was good, but it gets even better when it turns out to reflect a fundamental difference between him and Hinami. Also, it’s not like he was trying trick her, but the fact remains that Hinami was WRONG about something: she misread Tomozaki’s motivation and project her own desire to be number one onto him. It’s an important moment in establishing how Tomozaki differs from Hinami.
Mimimi was the star of this volume. She turns out to be a lot more complex than the lovable goofball we met in the first volume. And we don’t just see this through her relationship with Tomozaki, but also her relationships with various other characters, like Hinami and Tama. I mentioned it earlier, but Mimimi in particular had some moments that I didn’t pay much attention to during my first read, but with the benefit of hindsight, seem like foreshadowing.
Something that struck me while reading this volume that I hadn’t really thought about before is how the five main girls in Tomozaki’s life contrast with each other. Izumi, Mimimi, and of course Hinami are outgoing normie girls, but Hinami is duplicitous, while Mimimi and Izumi seem far more genuine. And between Mimimi and Izumi, the former is more independent while the latter is more go-along-to-get-along (though she’s trying to change that). And then Kikuchi and Hanabi are both non-normie girls who don’t quite fit in, but where Tama is bold and outspoken, Kikuchi is quiet and introverted. I knew this stuff about these characters, but didn’t realize just how much each girls serves as mirror for one or more of the others.
stardf29: Tomozaki continues to grow in this volume, not just in how he “plays the game of life” but also how he works through some things on his own, particularly with when he was helping Mimimi with the student council election. And I really like the moment when he explained how his motivation for becoming the best in Atafami is more so he doesn’t lose to himself, and then how that creates a notable difference in his approach to gaming compared to Hinami.
And yes, I like how this volume makes us question the whole mentorship Hinami has over Tomozaki, particularly with how their approaches to “gaming” are ultimately different, but also how Hinami might have her own issues to deal with, as well as how there are things she can’t handle, like the whole situation with Mimimi. It’s part of what moves this story away from just being a “self-help” book and into a more complex story with various character motivations.
Mimimi is the “star” of the volume, and rightly so. She provides an interesting “Player 3” to the story, as her natural friendliness makes it easy for her to get along with Tomozaki, while also having her own history with Hinami and her own perspective towards competition. There’s a nice line of character development for her going through this volume, and I like how it’s neither Tomozaki or Hinami who ultimately helps her with her biggest insecurities; that would be “too easy” for either of them.
Tumblr media
Overall, I really like how this series has been incorporating more of its side characters. Even the guys have a good presence here. I’m definitely looking forward to what role these other characters play in the story.
3. One of the themes of this volume is “losing”, and how different people feel about not being “first place”. What are your personal thoughts on how we should approach competition, particularly when we lose?
Jeskai Angel: I think we all take some competitions more seriously than others. The novel shows this with Hinami and Mimimi’s middle school teammates. Those girls just weren’t invested in basketball in the way that Hinami and MImimi were. That doesn’t necessarily mean those girls were all lazy losers who fail at everything in life because they never put forth effort. It just means that particular kind of competition wasn’t as much of a priority to them. A big factor in how seriously we take competition is the stakes. Is there a prize we care about? Alternatively, sometimes we feel our sense of self-worth is on the line in a competition. Of course, it’s not so much the case that our value as a person is on the line, but rather than our pride is what’s at stake.
This brings us to the Bible, with all its “The last shall be first,” and “The meek shall inherit the earth” messages. A consistent theme in the scriptures is that God’s idea of “winning” is different than ours, and God will overturn human expectations about who the “winners” are. The Bible promotes humility and discourages us from seeking the glory of men. Most of the winning we can do in this life just isn’t meaningful.
Now, that said, winning is a lot more fun than losing. It’s okay to wanna be the very best, like no one ever was. But “fun” and “the meaning of my existence” are very different kinds of stakes, and I think Hinami, and Mimimi to a lesser extent, have mixed them up. Mimimi felt kind of lost in this volume; she’s not competing for fun, but neither is she an ego-driven maniac on the level of Hinami. I think Hinami’s form of competitiveness is dangerous, while Tomozaki’s is more benign. Competing because it’s fun to win is much less serious that competing because we need to affirm our pride.
TWWK: Mimimi is a good example of how sport and competition can dictate your self-worth. And not just those, but anything in which we put forth energy and show talent and excellence. Jeskai points toward scripture, which is totally unique is showing that our self-worth is in the creator and his attributes, not in our own, which when lived out most fully can both help us excel in competition while lifting us up in our failures. I think that’s such an incredible and life-giving message, because my experience with some I’ve known in athletics mirrors Mimimi’s, and my own academic studies when I was younger mirrors hers, too—when we eventually fail, for we all will (look at Hinami in gaming), do we have a foundation to help us from bottoming out? If there was is a criticism I have for this excellent volume, it’s that Mimimi recovers almost unrealistically, or at least, without us being truly privy to what it is that leads to that change in her. I don’t think it’s so easy to step back up when you have such a reaction as hers to failure.
stardf29: Given how prevalent “competition” is in the world, there’s clearly something about wanting to beat others at something that is a part of human nature. One could argue it’s not inherently a bad thing, either, as there are plenty of stories where healthy competition encourages two people to both improve. This seems to be behind Tomozaki’s approach to games; he’s mainly focused on mastering the game he plays, and losing means he has more to learn and master. His statement that he mainly doesn’t want to lose to himself is a great statement: when he loses, it’s less about losing to the opponent and more about the realization that there’s still more to be done to master the game. This pursuit of getting better is the healthy side of competition, and if God designed us to seek competition as part of our nature, it would be for this reason.
Unfortunately, competition also has its ugly sides. With Mimimi, we see something more just misguided: the belief that she won’t mean anything unless she is in first place. It’s definitely an unhealthy attitude to have, but thankfully Tama snaps her out of it by making sure she knows she means something to her no matter what. It’s the kind of attitude that can easily come about if one grows up in an environment without unconditional love, and likewise one which God’s unconditional love can help a lot with.
And then with Hinami, we don’t know yet why exactly she’s so fixated on “winning”. Maybe she just likes the feeling of having asserted dominance over other people. That’s definitely a common source of unhealthy competition. She might also feel something similar to Mimimi, where she feels like her self-worth is based on successful competition. Whatever the case, it definitely seems like she’s unhealthily obsessed with winning.

4. Were there any particular bits of advice on life that you liked from this volume?
TWWK: The bit of advice that Aoi had given Mimimi when she wanted to help Tama become integrated in their class was simple but I think helpful in many real-life situations, too—it basically was to talk to her a little each day. I’ve been in Tama’s shoes before, and thanks to friendly and extroverted classmates, have been integrated better into classes and developed good friendships, something that was far from guaranteed due to my shy nature and the frequency with which I transferred between schools as a military brat. I’ve always been grateful for the Mimimi’s in my life, though thankfully, none have been so, uh, intimate with me.
5. If you watched the anime, what do you think about how the anime adapted this volume?
Jeskai Angel: I don’t recall any glaring oddities with the anime. As with many other anime adaptations of first-person-narrated light novels, the biggest difference is the lack of the protagonist’s inner monologue. This a journey-before-destination story. What Tomozaki ultimately says or does is less important that the thought process he uses to get there, and the anime just can’t convey that with the kind of depth we get in the book. More specifically, I think Tomozaki’s comments on the other characters are especially noteworthy. His impressions can reveal things (about himself, and about the other characters) that are much less obvious without that first-person narration.
TWWK: I mentioned it earlier, but what’s most obvious to me is the difference in Tomozaki’s. No, they’re not really developed differently, but the anime is heavily focused on “what we see,” the outsider’s view of Tomozaki, which is appropriately awkward and especially voiced as such. The light novel is almost the opposite, as we mostly experience his inner voice which is witty, humorous, and just as engaging (and usually more so) than that of the people he’s trying to emulate. It’s a nice contrast, actually—I enjoyed this source material more than the anime episodes, but appreciate the anime a bit more now as well, now that I can see a fuller picture of this character.
Tumblr media
Christina Kelly, who voices Mimimi in the English dub, chatted with us about the character among others she’s voice.
stardf29: I like the point about the anime allowing us to see Tomozaki more from an outsider’s perspective. I’ve heard others make comments about how “cringe” Tomozaki sounds when they actually got to hear him with proper voice acting, and usage of somewhat-overused buzzwords aside, I think it’s a good reflection of how the anime makes it clear how socially awkward Tomozaki really is, which helps me appreciate his growth more. I do still prefer all the internal monologue we get with Tomozaki in the light novels, but I do like this part of the anime, at least.
Also, while not technically part of this volume, I should say, the anime really went out of its way with the portrayal of Atafami, with a whole bunch of characters designed for the anime that don’t even appear in the story. I like it when animators go just that extra little bit further for these adaptations.

Extraordinary You Thoughts Ep 1-8 feat. Differences From the Webtoon
Okay, so first things first... I AM LOVING THIS SHOW SO FREAKING MUCH! I love absolutely everything about it! The characters are amazing, Dan Oh is so much fun, I can’t get enough of her. Haru is so beautiful and cute and ahhh. Kyung is such a jerk but he wears it so well??? Plus, knowing he really doesn’t have much choice in the matter helps. Ju Da and Nam Ju’s story is actually so much fun BECAUSE they’re in a Boys Over Flowers remake but our mains are aware of how dumb it is so it’s actually very enjoyable!
I am actually looking forward to watching this one every week, it’s given me my much-needed drama obsession for the next couple of months or so.
It’s VERY different from the webtoon, but I think it kind of works (for me) because of that? Like, I keep looking forward to figuring out what those changes mean. I am excited to see where they lead! But I do want to talk about them for a sec.
A short disclaimer: when I talk about the “comic” I am actually talking about “Secrets” - the original comic from which Dan Oh comes and lives inside. It’s a romance comic that has its own plot and all the characters of the webtoon are part of it.
When I talk about the webtoon, I am talking about the actual webtoon that you can read, in which Dan Oh is a self-aware comic character trying to change her fate as an extra.
SPOILERS FOR THE WEBTOON!!
The Set-Up
In the Drama they went for a more “Boys Over Flowers”-esque type of story, with three hot friends who are the highlight of their rich kids' high school, and the one poor girl who transferred in and has the guts to stand up to the leader of them. It has scenes like girls ganging up on her to bully her, the leader saying “don’t touch what’s mine” and being all contrary, the special F4 A3 club room/space that makes you wonder about this school funding and if this is really where it should be going and more familiar hits.
And you know what? I totally get it! It’s a cognetive shortcut. We don’t need anyone to explain to us what’s going on in the Comic Plot because we’ve all been there and done that before, allowing the drama to focus on Dan Oh and her reactions to everything around her. Plus, it allows for some very fun commentary from Dan Oh that proves dramas have come a long way and now recognize how exceptionally dumb and cringy much of what we see in them is.
I do wonder if they are going to incorporate their original backstories somehow, the same as they are doing with Baek Kyung, because the comic is still named Secrets, and that was a very big part of why.
Basically, In the Webtoon, you still have three hot friends, but they don’t have their own special area and all of those things. Many of the BOF scenes are not part of this setup. Instead, Ju Da, the main character of the Comic “Secrets” is actually a childhood friend of the comic’s second male lead, Do Hwa. As a child, she went through a horrific experience, which Do Hwa is aware of. She has PTSD and selective amnesia, which means she gets panic attacks from loud sounds and glass shards but has never actually dealt with her trauma because she can’t remember it. She transferred to their school with Nam Joo’s help after her grandmother’s death and has a contract with him that has to do with his secret. They also share a childhood connection. Their relationship is different and more complex than what it is in the drama (so far). Therefore, their interactions are of a different nature than they are in the drama.
Part of what is so great about the webtoon is that it deals with really difficult subjects. The drama so far looks so fluffy and fun in comparison, that I can’t help but wonder how these elements would be incorporated, if at all.
Dan Oh & her Family Life
Webtoon Dan Oh is a much more reserved character than Drama Dan Oh. She is not innocent sweet in her “comic version”, and she is not energetic say-what-comes-to-her-mind in her self aware version, either. She is cool, both in a “she’s so cool!” meaning and “wow, she doesn’t show many emotions” type of way.
Her parents care mostly about money, and actually, don’t pay her much attention. They use her about the same way Baek Kyung’s asshole dad uses him. They are both alive and in the picture, too.
And, most importantly, she is terminally ill from the get-go and she finds that out in her “character concept” from the comic. So, her actions are in part directed by the unfairness of knowing that the author probably doesn’t even mean for her to survive until the end of the comic. Her story is full of emotions, heartbreak, and hope, and it’s really touching. But she does it all more subtly and quietly than Drama Dan Oh.
Webtoon Dan Oh is also very much an extra. At least as far as the main comic story is concerned. Yes, she obviously has her scenes with Baek Kyung that give her some more story and relevancy, but in most of the scenes she appears in with regards to Ju Da and Num Joo’s story, she is a one-liner character if at all. She often wonders why the author brought her all the way to the scene just for this.
Drama Dan Oh is very different, and, look, I ain’t complaining. Drama Dan Oh is all I said Webtoon Dan Oh is not, and that makes sense. In a Webtoon, we have free access to the character's thoughts. Even if she is not as expressive, we know her true thoughts and feelings and so we don’t need that extra energy. A drama doesn’t have that luxury--if we spent all the drama just hearing her thoughts without her really emoting, I don’t think we’d be all that interested. And Drama Dan Oh is so much fun. She is what makes it breezy and funny and refreshing. But that also means her story, so far, is not as poignant and painful. That’s not to say we won’t get there--but for now, it’s lighter and more fun.
As for her family, Drama Dan Oh has a father who would die for her and a loving mother who has already passed away. I kind of feel like thanking the script-writer of the drama for giving Dan Oh something. In the Webtoon, it felt very unfair that the comic writer thought to saddle her not only with a terminal illness and a jerk of a fiance who hates her but also with a greedy, money-hungry family. C’mon, give a girl a break!
Drama Dan Oh is not really an extra, is she? I mean, in the drama, she feels much more like a side character, especially as they made her the “love bridge”, as she calls it, between Ju Da and Nam Joo. It means that she actually appears in many scenes related to Nam Joo and Ju Da. I get that because you do want to give your main character more screen time, but at the same time, it’s a bit weird that she’s considered an extra in this world?
Haru
boy do I have things to say about this one. Because they gave him so much to do in this? Not that I mind, of course. Haru is beautiful and I am here for him to grace my screen for as long as he possibly can, but it does make me wonder where they are going with it.
In The Webtoon, Haru’s role within Secret really is a nameless extra. He has nothing specific to do, no role in Secret’s story whatsoever. He barely appears on stage and when he does it’s background. His relationship with Dan Oh is so bittersweet because it is filled with waiting and lounging--waiting for scenes in which they both exist, so they can sneak off and be together while the script is running around them. They communicate any way they can, looking forward to the quiet moments they can spend together, alone, away from the cold hand of the author. He only becomes active when it becomes dangerous for Dan Oh, and even then, he needs the help of a main character,  Baek Kyung, to be able to do something.
The drama is taking a different approach, which actually makes me wonder if the Drama is combining Haru with Dried Squid Fairy from the webtoon, what with the questions about flowers and secret places he shouldn’t know about, the cautious way he approaches Dan Oh, and the allusion to historical places.
Drama Haru actually has a talent that differentiates him--he can draw, and really really well. He appears to have been self-aware long before Dan Oh, which doesn’t necessarily contradict the webtoon, but the fact he appears to have been following her--from afar--for quite a while, is. And why?
the biggest, most groundbreaking difference... Drama Haru actually appears on stage! With Dan Oh! And Baek Kyung! He is literally becoming a part of Dan Oh’s comic book plot. That... that doesn’t happen in the webtoon! For Baek Kyung to get angry at Haru and Dan Oh for having fun together, and for other people to remember it, is actually extraordinary when you look at it in the context of the webtoon. It means that in this version, things really are changing, and changing drastically. Is Haru actually going to be a love rival for Baek Kyung, not just in the Shadows, but on Stage as well?
While I don’t mind that idea at all, it changes everything. Like, for real. It changes the idea of fighting your destiny and carving your own, against impossible challenges. It changes the tone and nature of his and Dan Oh’s relationship. It changes the type of heartbreaking scenes we can expect.
Much excitement, very confuse!
Portals
in the drama, they exist.
.
.
.
.
Okay, fine, I’ll write a couple more sentences about them, yeesh.
Okay, so, what does this mean? Do these portals indicate people can maybe LEAVE this comic book world? If you do, do you go to another comic, or might you actually come out in the Real World? What do these imply, and what can we do with them? I am excited to find out!
Dried Squid Fairy
possibly the dumbest character name to ever appear in a drama, but what can you do.
A little bummed he doesn’t have a bunny companion like in the webtoon, but it’s not like that bunny made sense in the webtoon context, either, so I’m not surprised.
A little bummed he doesn’t have long blond hair, because it was so funny when he pointed out how that hair made NO SENSE for a cafeteria worker.
I feel like his backstory might have been given to Haru, which is a bit of a bummer. In the Webtoon, he is actually a character from a different comic--a historical one--in which he originally became self-aware to disastrous results. The author loves him so much that she/he has given him more than “one life” in his/her comics, much to his aggravation.
I get the feeling they just want a break, really.

in an ideal fic, what ships would there be and how would they interact? gm ☀️☀️
goodmorning! well, it’s 3pm now, but i love the sunshine emojis 🌞
obligatory disclaimer that i have mixed feelings about fanfiction as a medium. i much prefer reading paradise lost to the bible, but pride & prejudice & zombies does nothing for me. i think it’s similar to how when staging a play that’s been done a million times before, changing the setting must reframe the text on a thematic level for that staging to be necessary, and thus, good.
a lot of fanfiction, to me, whether published or lost to the archives of the internet, attempts to reframe the text without actually understanding the text. i realize that not all fanfiction exists to explore the text in the first place. sometimes it just works as good shorthand to explore one’s (often sexual) fantasies. you already know these characters––oh, and now they’re fucking.
so in that regard, i can’t exactly fault these authors for not understanding the text. i can fault them for other things, certainly, but thematic relevance was clearly not a goal in the first place. it’s the difference between a ship existing in a work of fanfiction to further the themes, and a fanfiction written for the sole purpose of exploring a ship.
with all that in mind, here’s a bullet-pointed list of fanfictions i would read should they exist and be well-written, but definitely do not exist and are not well-written because i have the appropriate amount of faith in the fanfic community (and that is... very little)...
a really long story from mai’s pov elapsing from her childhood to at least a year into zuko’s reign. the climax of the story is the turning point at the boiling rock wherein ty lee betrays azula. the first act is the buildup to all of that, and the second act is the fallout. the main ship being mai/ty lee, obviously. oh and at one point towards the end, mai and sokka play pai sho together. that is of the utmost importance.
a story told almost like an epic poem (perhaps with the structure of one, but still in prose) about suki’s adventures throughout the show’s chronology and then spanning afterwards as well. we learn about her backstory, what she got up to in the months in between seeing sokka. it’s usually quite bleak, as she is mostly helping refugees before getting kidnapped by azula, tortured for information, and then thrown into a horrific maximum security prison! but it’s not all bad. and seeing as suki is the protagonist, it would never make for a bad read, either. the main ships are sokka/suki and suki/ty lee. because duh.
azula, in the years spanning the depths of her recovery, going on hikes with toph. basically each segment is just the next hike with toph, in chronological order, and it tracks her development just through how much she is willing to divulge, and what toph would say in response. she grows a lot. unsurprisingly, toph makes for a great therapist. no romantic shipping of any sort, but azula & toph would share a really fascinating bond.
sokka and iroh playing pai sho. sokka and asami playing pai sho. (AU?? or are they in the spirit world?? idk lol) i suppose korra/asami would be present because korra’s all “kick his ass babe” and sokka/zuko would be as well because wherever sokka and iroh are together, zuko must be too. and of course, he is very invested in the outcome of this game, even if he does fall asleep at one point. i guess you’d have to make up the rules of pai sho, at least vaguely, seeing as there are no official rules, but isn’t it a lovely idea?
chell’s AU wherein azula and zuko run away together as children and join the gaang. just gonna link to it here. (read it if you know what’s good for you.) i don’t think there are really any ships, other than azula’s one-sided crush on suki, because azula does not have time to care about other people’s love lives (and it’s from her pov) but sokka/zuko is alluded to, if i remember correctly.
my AU that simply exists as an excuse to have sokka be a lightningbender. here.
a whole fucking novel of an AU wherein instead of being tasked to capture the avatar, zuko was simply left to die in the southern water tribe. he expects to either freeze to death or be eaten by wolves or, if he’s lucky, be killed instantly by the people there, but instead, sokka and katara take him in and he grows up in the swt, and goes with them when they find aang three years later. then of course shit goes down once azula shows up, and it’s all a whole thing! since it’s from zuko’s pov, the primary ship is sokka/zuko, obviously.
epistolary between firelord zuko and chief katara of the southern water tribe. none of their letters are remotely diplomatic, and mainly serve as gossip with only the occasional reminder that they are, in fact, world leaders. no ships.
sokka’s life postwar that kind of just details all the cool shit he did. shrug.
idk whether this counts as atla or lok, but i would read a chronicle of kya/izumi dyke drama in a heartbeat and am not ashamed to admit that.
ty lee and azula’s very complicated dynamic from alternating povs. i just think their respective feelings towards each other are super interesting. especially the night at the beach and the turning point at the boiling rock, though all the moments leading up to that are just as important. the ‘ship, though, would be mai/ty lee. (y’all know theyre my favs, right)
the katara cinematic universe is its whole own post, so i’m not even gonna discuss that here.
and then of course, our somehow very in-depth highschool AU (i don’t know how we got here, either) that could be its own series of young adult novels if written by someone with that kind of patience and focus (so to be clear, not me). hopefully, it would be imbursed with that painfully authentic sensibility american vandal (rip legend) had, while also being a bit too earnest, the way all coming of age stories are––but charmingly so. it might even be a series of vignettes, short stories from various povs that all come together in a painfully hilarious tapestry. azula begins studying for the SATs freshman year. mai sarcastically quips at anyone who deigns to speak to her. also she’s dating zuko, so that’s great comedy fodder of course. katara runs for student body president against azula. sokka and zuko land themselves in detention and they find a way to escape. toph joins the science club just because sokka runs the science club; things explode. stuff like that.
i used to say i’d want a kyoshi backstory, but now we have one, and i simply have yet to read it. oops.
oh and this is lok, but i’ve always wanted more on mako & lin’s dynamic. i just think they’re really cute together. (to be clear, not romantically. ew)
i think the avatar universe is also just rife with fascinating lore, though, and you could pretty much write anything, set in any time period, that complies with canon and– hopefully– enhances it. for example, i would love to read a story that incorporates the physics of their universe into its thematic framework. i really liked the stuff with the lionturtles, for example.
oh, and of course, a sokka/zuko vignette that’s just them going to see a production of king lear and then discussing it afterwards. that fanfiction exists for an audience of one, but you did ask me, so...

Week 9, a study in chance encounters
This week has been about unexpected encounters.  I am currently working on putting together the reading, questions, and context for the bi-monthly book club I put on at work.  This month is Mules and Men by Zora Neal Hurston, and it obviously goes into folk stories from the black community in both Florida and Louisiana. The Florida section tends to focus on Eatonville and Polk County.  Reading this with the research we have done thus far on venues and juke joints is fascinating.  Hurston does refer to them a few times, but often spells them “jook.”  Many of the spellings in the book are more phonetical in nature in order to give an idea of the accent involved with the culture the stories come from, so this spelling may not be relevant for our research. However, it is still worth noting that Hurston does reference music and a juke joint in the context of Eatonville in the 1930s as this could be relevant later for evidence of needing a more official venue.
The other exciting chance encounter this week came in the form of an interested student.  They were doing a project involving curation and asking about maintenance with our own collection at Rossetter, but they are very active in the black Melbourne community.  Melbourne originally was intended as a black community separate from the already established and white area of Eau Gallie, and the current residence are trying to erect a home discussing the black leaders of the late 1800s in Melbourne and celebrate this now mostly forgotten founding.  This site is apparently near a juke joint that was famous in Brevard.  While not directly related to what we are looking for in Club Eaton, this further expands the cultural importance of venues and can further our map.  I am hoping to set up an interview with the main drivers of this venture who are also old enough to have heard stories of this juke joint if not themselves have been there.  This happened completely separate from any work this week and was completely unexpected.
In actual research however, I have heard back from a few points of interest.  Richard Forbes is interested in any work we come up with, but does not have any resources that can help us at this time. Holly Baker with FHS also got back to me, and sent a few newspapers articles she could find.  I wanted to compare these to what Casey has already read, as I believe these are ones we have already incorporated into what we have. The Wells Built Museum also does not have any information, and Heather Bonds no longer works for the City of Orlando but has moved on to Tampa.  I also need to finalize a meeting with the Orange County Regional History Center, as I did hear back that they might have pictures of the site in their vertical site files. We still have not heard back from the Ritz Theatre, Florida Folklore Council, or the Moore Center.  All parties have had more than two weeks to respond and it is likely time to let Dr French and Dr Cheong have a go at contacts to see if they get responses.  All in all not much information was gained this week, but a few chance encounters gave some possible insight and connections that could further the research.

Gotham s4ep18 “That’s Entertainment”  Personal Review
Tumblr media
“Expect no mercy, just a hail of bullets.”   Warning spoilers below
* Yeah ALFRED PENNYWORTH give the kid a bullet prof car, might as well just shoot right at him * “What are we waiting for? Those people need our help.” “Good man” Jim Gordon getting right to BRUCE WAYNE to put him into an explosive collar is pretty much undermining his words last week about Bruce endangering himself and his accusations against Alfred of supporting this. But it´s the bigger picture, right. It´s always the bigger picture with all of them. Just that all of them keep thinking they got the best judgement of what the bigger picture and greater cause is. * “But even if it does maybe, by facing Jerome I can show the people of Gotham that standing up to terror is the only way to take its power away.” “Well said.” Bruce Wayne talking to JEREMIAH, addressing his accomplishments with such eloquence and politeness was remarkable to watch. And it makes me want to see some sequels about his education so far. That´s not just something you just can do, that´s a practiced skill he´s capable of invoking whenever needed and it´s wonderful. It´s a fine line between reasoning and manipulation!  I really loved that they have had him keep appreciating Jeremiah´s research after the whole mess. It´s just a glimpse on what the fandom does every now and then point out: Batman with his bulletproof car might be able to do some good with questionable methods but Bruce Wayne would be capable of bringing remarkable change for the sake of Gotham and it´s citizens. It´s a shame that this responsibility keeps being neglected. How much hospital equipment does a bullet proof car buy? * “It was an act.” “I think you're more sure about that than me.” I´m glad they at least keep a bit of ambiguity there, only if it´s just a tiny moment. You don´t just completely change by a plant induced nightmare, that just can´t eradicate all you´ve gone through. * “What, you have a laugh? No bloody way.”  Idk why but this was hilarious * “For once I agree with Alfred.”  Oh Selina ..  * “Boom. Headless people.” * “Quite the dilemma, Jim. You gonna let me fall and die? Or are you gonna pull me up and arrest me? What's it gonna be? Lawman or murderer? Ah. Good ol' Gordon. Always playing by the rules.” JIM GORDON and this old question again. I almost expected him to not care about Jerome falling. Also how much does Jerome know about Jim doing stuff like going to retired mob bosses and beg them to return? Can someone tell him? Would that make him laugh? *  Also Jim Gordon messing with a detonators signal (again) ..  good that Jerome doesn´t have Nygma on his team * OSWALD COBBLEPOT looks so pretty, I´m done * With Oswald´s expressions throughout this whole enterprise I am not in the slightest surprised that Jerome has had doubts about him :D You can do better than that Oswald, we´ve seen it. * Jim  & Oswald was too precious. “I mean, I was willing to play along with him for a while. Perhaps he had a way to make us all rich? A return to the good old days, you know? But nothing good will come of this.” “Or maybe you just don't like the competition. Jerome casts quite the shadow.” “Oh, please! He's a maniac, an anarchist. He is not interested in money or power. And I am an honest criminal, Jim.” * “What's worse than that? How can you run an empire in a city full of lunatics?” As much as Jim Gordon keeps pointing out that Oswald caring about the state of the city is only for the sake of his own goals and aspirations I however do see my (head)canon confirmed that Oswald cares for the city. Maybe not more than about himself but still. He was horrified by what Theo Galavan had planned and he certainly didn´t need to care about these people. And I do think that he would have been capable of putting on a better poker face, lean back longer and step upon some ashes to claim what´s left. It´s not like the city has seemingly quite well survived a couple of gas attacks. Why not this one too?  Also Oswald was ready to subject it to a mob war. This clearly was more than a power struggle and jealousy towards Jerome, Oswald was not willing to step over a certain line of (“unnecessary”) cruelty. * “I´m home” Okay this killed me, as much as this plotline is icky, BARBARA KEAN having felt out of place and just wrong all her life now feeling that she has a purpose and worth killed me. This though is remarkably ugly and I don´t like it: “Why don't you do it?” “Because I am the one true heir of an immortal god's ancient dynasty. And I don't dirty my fingers with the likes of you anymore.” And the hell, why is she just always the love interest? * What I also really love about this is: “The Barbara I know would've already sold all of this junk to the highest bidder.” “Junk? This is my destiny.” “And being with me and Selina at the club? That isn't? You begged me to partner with you.” “Can't you see who that is up there? That is me and Ra's, 400 years ago.” “Oh, please, I mean, she doesn't even look like you.” “It looks exactly like me. It is me. I have finally found my true purpose. I'm not gonna let your jealousy distract me.” “Ra's influenced history.” “He was a cult leader, and he still has them brainwashed.” “And what about me, am I brainwashed? There are things written here that could change the way we view the past forever. Perhaps, I am the one to bring that change to light.” I guess it´s because it´s just playing right into a couple of headcannons. And it brings back some reference to her being an art gallery owner. And now I´m even safeish to headcanon that this was not just for prestige and money but that she truly was invested and interested in art(history). This finally gives her some personality and passion. Her doing that research about the glowing hand already sparked my interested, because I know Bruce & Co did it do but you don´t just get deep into historic research like that, you gotta have some background to dig around properly. And that “change the way we view the past” line omg! You don´t just say something like that without caring about history. I´m delighted. It´s not just ohh I got all the ancient magic at my hand to do stuff and things with it there is also this element of knowledge and curiosity about the past! And I´ll die with that headcanon. Just imagine young Barbara Kean having an interest in history, buried deep in dusty books but her parents discouraging her. Like who cares about that. That´s not a career and it´s not gonna buy an expensive apartment or bring prestige to the family name.   With going for the art gallery option Barbara found a way to keep associating with the wealthy elite, like her parents want her to but also thought she could keep a bit close to things she was interested in. But along the way this started to sometimes shift into resentment because it´s not quite what she actually wants to do. She even appreciates modern art the more she learns about it but it´s just not quite right and this could be the reason why Tabs picked up some dismissive attitude or remarks about things Barbara actually values. Her parents just estranged her from her interest so far that even after they were gone she´s just about having control .. eg about the underworld (and a couple of other fleeting  stuff and things because this show is a cluttered mess) instead of being able to reconnect to what she was interested in, also they were quite successful with hammering into her that this is just not an option to be anything else than stupid interest or hobby. Also: The Cult & Brainwash thing & TABITHA GALVAN Can we talk about that bit, about how the contrasted Barbara´s personal past and now almost painful moment of feeling she found some worth with on the other hand TABITHA GALAVAN´s past of actually having been in a cult. Can we appreciate that they addressed this. Also this just renews another headcanon of mine: That a big failure of the Dumas Order´s was neglecting Tabitha. They obviously trained her but after that statement it´s also obvious that they failed to indoctrinate her like they did with Theo Galavan. Once failed and once going over a couple of lines with Silver, Tabitha was very quickly ready to abandon the grand plan and holy mission. I guess the Order only saw the male heir as being of any importance and that´s what they taught him (and indirectly also taught Tabitha) it was Theo´s mission, Theo´s legacy and in the end also Theo´s accomplishment. Tabitha was surely kept close and in line but they failed to incorporate and include her.  Personal Headcanons aside .. what is this plot even ??! And what the fuck is that horrible odd picture?! Especially the faces look so off. * “That's why I'll outlive you. That's why I'm loved 'cause I don't give a damn about the rules. “It's a long way down. You sure you'll outlive me?” “Oh, I'm sure 'cause I'm more than a man. I'm an idea, a philosophy. And I will live on in the shadows within Gotham's discontent. You'll be seeing me soon. Au revoir.” * “Finally set you free” Even if JEROME VALESKA´s “they are both the same” talk has a point (and given the remarks about their childhood they are both shady, the Ecco devoted her life thing is still creepy af there is one)  even with that JEREMIAH VALESKA  has made a choice to protect himself and use his mind to create, buildings and structures but also an electrical engine that creates a grand amount of power to supply the city (and I´m just gonna assume he would not try to milk every last penny out of it) that´s all far from destruction and chaos and that is a choice and I want to believe that choices do matter. That there is some gas action happening that eradicates all that is just cheap.  And it does undermine Jerome´s words about being an idea and philosophy that will live on with Gotham´s discontent. I don´t want to see this as Jeremiah being set free, I want to see this as Jeremiah being robbed of his choices and agency. And while I can get behind the general idea that refuting rules, deprecating law and embracing destructive chaos stemming out of neglect and discontent could be an interesting concept this also gets cheapened if its new poster boy is someone who is forced into this role. Arguably Jerome´s upbringing (I´m just gonna assume a general horribleness and abuse is very much what happened no matter the details) as opposed to Jeremiah´s way out of this has if not forced paved a way into the discontent, and what his was it grandfather (Edit: father in 2x3) said about him being a curse on the city was the role he found he could embrace rather than being hurt over it. So maybe Jerome could be also seen as a case of self fulfilling prophecy that others pushed upon him but there still was a choice so I would not equal that to being changed through a toxin. If they wanted to really sell the philosophy idea they would have planted some seeds in the DeadJeromeOnCar scene, which imho was really well done solemnly and actually kind of sad, but they could have put someone in there disrupting that notion with some destructive “not gonna go to respect the dead body or any rules in any way” notion ..
* What´s up with the voices and language? MR. FREEZE got a new distinct tone and intonation that I just can´t point my finger on, or is it only me?  And has JONATHAN/SCARECROW ever shown signs of YodaGrammar? “More laughing gas we need to make.” Did I forget about it, did the boy talk like that? * “Gotham's Moral Authority Society”  Gotham's Moral Authority Society …….. Why do I feel more threatened by this than by any of the murderous criminals .. ?!
