aaaand on the topic of that second-to-last reblog because for some reason I started looking at the notes -

the point is not that these programs "aren't sentient" or "aren't intelligent" or "don't understand what they're doing". those are all fuzzy-ass concepts that often have more ideological grounding than relevance to empirical questions and use cases.

the actual point is that if you have a task that requires or benefits from the actor's capacity to associate the symbolic representations it's learned about with a certain type of outside stimuli, an actor that definitionally lacks that situational context won't be a good fit for that task. if the task is "producing text that a native speaker would consider syntactically correct and semantically meaningful" then that person who understands strings Chinese characters as a probabilistic/mathematical code is doing just fine!

but if the task is "producing text that says something true," or "creating a novel recipe" or "not replicating existing patterns of social bias evident in the training set" - then that's where the actual problem comes in. because those tasks require associating the learned symbols with external data: about what it means to be factual, about the actual physical reactions that take place during cooking, about the sociohistorical context for how the training data were produced. those are the decisive factors making the difference, in this case, between humans and current AI programs - not "actual intelligence" or "having interiority" or "knowing what its words mean".

the AI may or may not "know" what the text it creates "means"; that's not a relevant question for this specific context. the problem is that what the text means to the AI, and what it means to the human reading it, aren't sufficiently equivalent to one another.
