We always talk about how Loghain had to let Cailan die (the boy he helped raise) and how he‘s Maric‘s son, which makes it obviously very painful for Loghain to lose him even when he was a fool.
But have we actually ever thought about Cailan also being Rowan‘s son? The woman Loghain loved as well?
He probably vowed to her and Maric to do the best with Cailan, to protect him, raise him well and then he has to face such a terrible choice at Ostagar. Like he failed and lost both sides of his polycule.
And in the quiet hours of the night he sits there and imagines Rowan screaming at him. After all those years some details about her have faded but he remembers her temper and how her eyes were set ablaze with it.
And he knows he failed. He failed in his promise to her. To protect her son and he failed in his promise to protect Ferelden.
He won’t fail a third time.

something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue
this is a story inspired by one of @catboy-von-seckendorff 's random domestic witches thoughts, specifically part 27 or so. anyways. if you read that you have an expectation of what's here.
kyoko ran up to mami, calling out, "Heeeeyy! Maaaami!!"
mami stopped at the door to her apartment complex, and waited for kyoko to catch up. she was a little bit tense; her past with kyoko was... complicated. but it was something she could put behind her for more important things. she waited patiently as kyoko caught her breath before speaking, "Yuma called me, said to come to your place. Said it was important. Either she's planning something with Charlotte or she just wanted picked up before you got home or something, but either way I came straight here, only to see you right as I arrived,"
she paused for several deep breaths of air before continuing.
"Sorry, I'm rambling. Is it okay if I walk with you the rest of the way?"
mami nodded. "Of course. I don't think they're in danger, though, or one of them would've called us with telepathy. No need to rush,"
kyoko continued taking deep breaths and raised her arms above her head as the pair climbed the staircase to mami's apartment. "Did Yuma give any reason?"
"Nope, just that I had to come and that is was important,"
the rest of the stairs were climbed in silence. when they reached the top, they could see yuma standing in front of mami's door, in her magical girl outfit, holding the shaft of her weapon in one hand. she had a serious look on her face as she looked to the two girls walking in her direction.
"So, what was so important?" kyoko asked, crossing her arms, "Is there a witch in mami's apartment?"
"There's one, actually," offered mami, but she was waved off by kyoko.
yuma shook her head. "Nagi- er, Charlotte said she made an important discovery. She told me to wait outside, then knock when you two got here,"
mami and kyoko shared a look, and didn't even need to use telepathy to share the thought, Charlotte knew we'd be here at the same time?
"Alright, we're here. It's getting chilly, so can we come inside?"
yuma nodded and turned, knocking twice on the door, pausing, and then knocking twice more. there was a few seconds' wait before charlotte's voice called from inside, "Come in!"
yuma opened the door, and stepped out of the way to let the older girls in first.
mami entered first, but froze almost immediately, causing kyoko to bump into her. kyoko shot her an annoyed look before turning to see what had stopped her so suddenly, and she internally rescinded the annoyance.
standing in mami's room, nervously smiling, was sayaka.
except she wasn't quite sayaka. her hair was noticeably wet, putting her golden hair clips a little out of sorts. she had dark circles under her eyes. her right arm had a vicious scar around the forearm, and though less visible, the rest of her body seemed pockmarked with smaller, barely visible scars.
"Sayaka," mami finally breathed. the girl winced, and mami quickly picked up on it, "Oktavia. Sorry,"
"It's okay. I know you're shocked-"
"You look beautiful," kyoko said quietly, "Like a mermaid made human,"
oktavia blushed and nervously scratched at her neck with her scarred arm. "Hey, there's no need for that kind of-"
"Hush. She's right, you're beautiful. I, for one, don't care what you look like. You're my friend, and that won't change, whether you're six feet tall or eighteen feet tall,"
"Whether you're a person or a fish," kyoko added.
oktavia took a deep breath before speaking, "Thank you. Both of you. But more than that," she turned to the little girl sitting cross-legged on the couch, quietly going through a bag of cheese curds, "Thank you, Charlotte, for... well, putting up with me."
charlotte provided a thumbs up as she finished off a curd. "Just because I'm a bit screwy in the head doesn't mean I don't care about you. I wanted you two," she looked pointedly at mami and kyoko, "to be the first to see her like this, but alas, I couldn't exactly teach her without watching. My apologies for that," she bowed her upper body without standing.
"It's been a strange few weeks, but I think I can pretty reliably... shift? is that what you called it?" nagisa gave another thumb up, "Between this form and the more... monstrous one,"
"It's not dangerous?" mami asked.
"Or painful?" kyoko asked, with so much concern that even charlotte, who was barely paying attention now, could pick up on it.
"Negative on both counts. Shifting is... relatively natural. Think of it like melting ice into water, then freezing that water back into ice. It's just another state of being," charlotte explained.
oktavia shrugged. "And now that I've worked through some issues, I like both of my states of being. Having a normal mouth to talk with is wonderful, by the way,"
mami and kyoko shared another look, then turned back to the witches in the room. "Okay, I think this is a good thing. This'll be especially useful if we have guests that aren't... in on this whole thing."
kyoko grinned and shot oktavia a private telepathic message that caused her to turn bright red. "Okay, I don't even want to know what you just told her. Can you at least come inside and close the door? Yuma, stop chattering your teeth, it's not good for them." yuma gently shoved the girls forward, giving herself enough room to close the door and rub her hands together as her weapon and costume vanished.
kyoko got the first hug, but the last was shared.
