Dead Files is my obsession. It’s genuinely one of my favorite shows. It is hilarious to me. It feels like watching a comedy. It’s just incredible. I recommend that everybody watch at least an episode or two.

At the age of 23, after moving to New York City she took up after her father and became a Junior Detective in the NYPD; but the fun plot twist came about when she began to discern the call to the Episcopal Priesthood. With the support of her Precinct, she entered into the Ordination process and attended Seminary; following this she was ordained into the Priesthood on the Eve of Trinity Sunday, 2015. BASIC INFORMATION
full name → delilah montgomery current age → thirty-one years old faceclaim → zoe sugg neighborhood →village of woodstock. occupation → Lead Homicide Detective at Woodstock Police Department. status → unavailable
PERSONALITY
+, focused, detail oriented, compassionate -, tunnel visioned, unforgiving, calculated
BACKSTORY
Delilah was never meant to get involved in the police department in her small town of Woodstock. With how often her father, Chief Montgomery (and a member of the Founders), had seen good cops go bad...he wanted to keep his daughter as far away from it as possible. The problem with that was that investigating was her God given talent...and she couldnt stay away. Throughout school she was the top of her class, always the leader of everything they did, and known for going around town solving 'little mysteries' that the police department didnt exactly have time to solve. Upon graduating high school, Delilah found herself going to New York University in the city, hoping to get her law degree and eventually become a lawyer in her small town…instead she found herself helping out the NYPD on cases they couldnt solve. She eventually graduated but didnt go on to Law School, instead she took up a job at NYPD for good. During her time at NYPD she met and fell in love with Knox Woodson…who just happened to be from her hometown. Just older. The two were partners for a while but after becomming official they had to go their separate ways. They moved in together to have more time together, and one night he didnt come home. Because of this she went looking for him and found him with another woman. The next day Delilah had quit everything and was on the drive back to Woodstock. She would find out soon she was pregnant. A year later she has her daughter, Ophelia, and is working as the Lead Homicide Detective. Her father retired from the force and her brother took over.

REVIEW
The Last Sinner by Lisa Jackson
New Orleans #9
Twenty-two years after Lisa Jackson introduced us to Detecitve Rick Bentz and he began his dance with the Rosary Killer, we finally find out how that portion of the New Orleans series is put to rest. We also find out that Bentz is contemplating retirement and both he and his partner, Reuben Montoya, are married with small children. A lot has happened over the years in this series and it might require a bit of refreshing of my memory and a walk down memory lane BUT for now…here’s my take on book nine.
What I liked:
* The action-packed, intense, devastating introduction to the story
* Catching up with Bentz and Montoya and trying to remember what they did in the first eight books of the series
* Kristi Bentz McKnight: true crime author, suffered a great loss in this book, pregnant, dealing with grief, strong, resilient, daring to the point I would sometimes want to shout “no”, has a part in the next book in the series – unless it is a spinoff instead
* Jay McKnight: can’t remember much about him, had a small but epic part in this book, his “presence” in the story
* Meeting and being intrigued by Cruz Montoya
* Wondering if Bentz will retire and if so, who Montoya’s new partner will be
* The twists, turns, red herrings and review of Kristi’s past books
* That we finally found out the truth, or some of it, about the Rosary Killer and whether or not he is the person who attacks Kristi at the beginning of the book
* Wondering if this series will continue or if it is done now and a spinoff series will begin with Kristi and Cruz
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how warped, evil, and amorally soulless some people are
Did I enjoy this book? Mostly
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC – This is my honest review
4-5 Stars
BLURB
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Survived delivers a gripping novel of suspense featuring two veteran homicide detectives matching wits with a twisted serial killer lurking in the shadows of New Orleans. There are killers so savage, so twisted, that they leave a mark not just on their victims, but on everyone who crosses their path. For Detectives Bentz and Montoya, Father John, a fake priest who used the sharpened beads of a rosary to strangle prostitutes, is one such monster. Bentz thought he’d ended that horror years ago when he killed Father John deep in the swamp. But now there are chilling signs he may have been wrong. A new victim has surfaced, her ruined body staged in deliberate, unmistakable detail. Either it’s a terrifying copycat, or Father John, the detective’s own recurring nightmare, has come back to haunt New Orleans. Another death, and another. Bentz is growing convinced that Father John isn’t just back. He’s circling closer, targeting those Bentz loves most. And this time, he won’t be stopped until the last sinner has paid the ultimate price… “Jackson definitely knows how to keep readers riveted.” —Mystery Scene

velouria here, finally writing the bio of everyone’s (or nobody’s) favorite police captain! he’s been in charming for twelve years, but only became captain two years ago. tries to run a clean station, focused on stopping the gangs of new york charming from hurting innocent people. an emotionally distant father that’s trying to rectify that with his daughter minnie coming back to town. very dour, but ultimately an okay guy. here’s his details, it’s LONG AS FUCK so if you read it all i will give you five gold stars!!:
content warnings: cancer, death, depression, brief mentions of alcoholism, classism
born in detroit, michigan on february 3rd, 1967. the third in a line of five boys, rick was a bit of a quiet, unassuming child. his childhood was relatively normal, he liked star trek and riding his bike, listened to new rock records with his older brothers, but he didn’t realize how poor his family was until he was in middle school—not that he was particularly unobservant, it was just everyone in his neighborhood was poor.
he hadn’t dreamt of being a cop like some kids did, his parents were vaguely anti-government, and with the attitudes towards cops in the seventies, rick never thought he’d become one. it wasn’t his plan, but after he graduated high school, he was working a series of dead end jobs. by 21, he was utterly aimless, and his other brothers hadn’t fared any better, some even turning to crime. he was looking for structure, a reason to get up in the morning, and some buddies from high school applying to the police academy was enough for rick to follow suit, much to his family’s dismay.
rick didn’t start out the same cop he is now. literally, because he’s a captain now, but his ideals have shifted greatly. at the start, even after the academy indoctrination rituals, it was only a job to him. it wasn’t great money, but he was a single man and really, for any kelleher child, any money was good money. he really didn’t take it seriously, or not as seriously as he was supposed to, but he figured it was just a job for awhile. he didn’t know it would become his life.
just because he wasn’t fanatical about it didn’t mean he wasn’t good at it, or that he hated being a cop. it was hard to have a family that belittled his profession and then beg him to save them whenever they got into trouble, and it was a dangerous job. no one wanted to be a beat cop in detroit, but rick started to gain a real appreciation for his city. a job that was supposed to be just a job became important to him. he wanted the people he saw on the streets every day to be safe, he wanted them to live in a nice place, a guy that needed meaning in life found it in the police force.
it wasn’t always so meaningful. sometimes, like most of his fellow officers, he debated quitting. he saw his friends in the department get shot, get stabbed, die in many different ways. he had to be cruel to be kind, and sometimes just cruel. it wasn’t exactly a fun job, but a brotherhood did grow between him and his fellow officers, and soon he wasn’t sure if he could be anything other than a cop.
his priorities shifted instantly the moment he saw zhilan ‘lilian’ wu, a student at wayne state university. she was with her friends at a chicken shack on a regular tuesday night in 1991 and rick had never seen someone so beautiful in his entire life. lilian didn’t think much of him when she first saw him, really. he was cute, but he was a cop and a bit of a dorky one at that. frankly, she was out of his league, but they kept running into each other while he was on patrol and when her apartment was broken into, she called 911 and hoped he would be the one to respond. lucky for the both of them, he was, and he didn’t leave until he gave her his personal phone number. (they never did catch the person that broke in.)
from that first date, they were inseparable. they fell madly in love, the sort of kind that happens only once, the kind that happens in movies or romance novels. for a guy that didn’t give much thought to starting a family one day, really he thought it would be a bad thing if he was to work such a dangerous job, all he wanted to do was marry lily. to his eternal surprise, she wanted to marry him, too. they were married the same year he was to be promoted to a detective, working on the vice squad.
just a short year after they were married, lily became pregnant. they were both excited but incredibly apprehensive. they were barely out of the honeymoon phase, she was away from her family, and he had just been promoted to detective. they fought a lot, his job was different but just as stressful, and rick wasn’t sure their marriage was going to last. as the months grew on and lily’s belly got bigger, they tried hard to work through their issues, but there was a lot of fear and a bit of resentment. when lily finally went into labor, rick was working a case and only had a matter of an hour to make it to the hospital before baby amelia came. when she did, it was like everything else fell away. every bit of resentment, anger, worry, it all went away like it never existed in the first place. they had been scared, but above all, rick and lily loved each other. deeply.
that doesn’t mean everything was peachy-keen. things were still incredibly stressful, a new baby that lily didn’t have a lot of help with, and rick trying to show his superiors that he was still incredibly devoted to his job while trying to be part of amelia’s rearing as much as humanly possible. by the time their daughter was five months old, lily was at her wit’s end. she wanted help, and while rick’s mother was around to babysit or grocery shop, it wasn’t the same as having her own mother there. lily didn’t set down an ultimatum so much as she begged to go back to boston where she was originally from, and like hell rick would let his wife and baby leave without him. with a bit of persistence, his request for transfer to boston went through, and the kellehers left for another wintry city.
the transition to boston was a little difficult for rick; getting used to a new department, new ground, he hadn’t spent a lot of time with his wife’s family before. lily had her own difficulties, but she took to it better, happy to be near her mother and in the town she grew up in. rick missed his little slice of detroit, but he’d rather be dead than away from lily and minnie (as they began to call her), so he chalked it up to needing a little time to get used to it. it got better once they moved out of his in-laws’ home into an apartment of their own.
assigned to the vice squad like he was back in detroit, it became apparent that it wasn’t a good fit anymore. long stakeouts were easier when he didn’t have a baby at home, and his wife hated it when he went undercover for long periods of time. he put in a request to transfer to the homicide division and while that proved its own set of challenges, it made his family happy that he wasn’t so in the line of fire anymore.
while minor things happened day to day, a partner getting shot, criminals getting off for various reasons, seeing dead bodies practically daily, rick can confidently say it was the happiest time of his life. he got to watch his little girl grow up, he was still so madly in love with lily, and he was even promoted to sergeant after passing his exam. five years later, he was promoted to lieutenant, and it was all just so wonderful before it all came crashing down.
2006, the kellehers move to charming. not that rick particularly wanted to, he was very happy in boston, but his hand was forced. transferred because things were getting notoriously bad in charming, an outlaw motorcycle club clashing with a rising new gang, the police department was basically begging for new blood to help them after several officers died or quit. with the promise of a pay raise and the chance to possibly move up to captain, something he’d never get in his boston precinct, rick tried to think of it as a new opportunity. if he could go back in time, he’d tell himself to never take the job, never even come to the west coast.
charming would never be detroit in the eighties or boston in the nineties, but he was mistaken when he thought a small town police department would make his life easier. this wasn’t a place to ride out into retirement, save cats from trees and settle disputes between elderly neighbors. he didn’t go into it blind, he knew what plagued the town, he had worked cases staking out gang warehouses and testified against the irish mob once, but charming was like something else entirely. the motorcycle club was so intertwined with society that often the citizens trusted them over the police department, and the ones that didn’t hated the department for not forcing the club (or the gang) out for town once and for all. it was an adjustment just like any new transfer, and just like before, he had to shift his ideals.
things were not easy at the start of his tenure as lieutenant, some didn’t like some hotshot cop from boston coming in and trying to clean up the streets of charming, and navigating the tense relationship between the club, the gang, and the department had a steep learning curve. he didn’t always agree with the previous captain, but they had been working charming for a lot longer than he had. even so, if he was to ever run the pd, it would be run differently.
things were not easy at home, either. not that they were horrific, lily and rick had dealt with adapting to a new place before, but the dangers of charming seemed a lot closer to home than back in boston. he feared for his daughter’s safety, almost a teenager, though she was so excited to move to california at the start. his wife was getting weaker, chalking it up to age. his job was difficult, he missed big cities and cold weather and dunkin’ donuts for breakfast. he automatically felt protective over charming and its people, as it was his job, but he didn’t love it like he had detroit, and boston to a lesser degree. rick was noticeably unhappy, but he committed to charming, and even with her faults, she didn’t deserve to be overrun by criminals.
as rick settled into life as a charming cop, his wife was also noticeably unhappy. she missed boston, she missed her family, and she wasn’t feeling well for quite some time. they didn’t find out until it was too late that lily had ovarian cancer. by the time they knew about it, it was like she was already gone. chemo was an option, but it seemed to just be delaying the inevitable and lily refused it, despite how much rick had begged her to at least try it. after only four years living in charming and eight months after being diagnosed, lily kelleher went peacefully in the middle of the night, in bed at home with the two great loves of her life sleeping next to her.
to put it plainly, rick was a fucking mess. he tried to keep it together when lily was still alive and put on a brave face, quite frankly he was in utter denial, but the cracks were visibly showing and after the death of his wife, he went off the deep end. completely swallowed by his grief, he was given bereavement leave but either way, he couldn’t get out of bed. he couldn’t look at his daughter, she looked too much like lily, and the idea of his wife not being around to make dumplings on christmas with minnie or wake him up when he fell asleep watching a western on tv after dinner broke his heart completely. when it was finally time to come back to work, he was a completely different cop, the kind of cop that he hated, aggressive and cruel at no provocation, he began to drink heavily and sob randomly. his captain finally gave him a kick in the ass: either get some help or get off the force.
taking another three weeks of leave, rick spent the first few days still swallowed by grief, but he knew he had to get help, this was no way to live. he started going to a therapist, tried to clean himself up and be there for his daughter. it wasn’t instantaneous and rick began to resent others, as if he should so easily get over the death of his wife, the only woman he’s ever loved, will ever love. he wasn’t better, just going through the motions, and eventually he was able to go back to work. he wasn’t the cop that he was before, and wasn’t the cop he was immediately after, but focusing on his job was the only thing that really got him through his grief and sorrow.
and minnie. he didn’t forget her, or love her any less. the decision he made was a hard one, one that’s hard to justify, but it felt like the only option. before lily died, he saw potential in charming. after, all he could see was its dark corners, as if that’s all there was. tensions were rising between the club and the gang and the department, rick didn’t see an end in sight to the violence, and it was hard to do his job when his mind was constantly drifting to his daughter, fearing for her safety, fearing for mind after losing her mother. four months after lily died, rick had a discussion with minnie, though it was more just telling her what was going to happen. minnie was going to move in with her maternal aunt back in boston, at least for a little while, until rick could get things back in order.
unfortunately a little while ended up being ten years. he didn’t want her to stay away that long, often he missed her so much that he wanted to demand that her aunt send her back, but he knew it was better in the long run. rick could focus on his job and minnie could finish out high school in a much more stable household, near her mother’s family to take care of her and keep her connected to her chinese side. with her safe, far away from charming and well taken care of, rick could dig deep into his work. when he was working a case, he didn’t have to think about how quiet his house now was, or that he was missing minnie’s later teenage years. when his whole life was protecting charming, he was protecting himself. it wasn’t as if he never saw minnie again, he flew out frequently and attended her graduations, but the short term plan for her to live with her aunt quietly turned into a lot longer, and rick got used to his empty house.
his dedication to his work wasn’t all for naught. in 2018, the previous captain retired and rick was promoted in high esteem. since taking command of the station, rick is trying to change things as best as he can, as much as the station and the club/gang will allow. rick is harsh on organized crime, doesn’t believe in fostering a relationship with either syndicate, and will fire anyone he finds out is in their pockets. he wants them out of charming—he doesn’t care if they exist, he just wants them out of his town. and it is his town.
he’s not all tough, though. captain kelleher cares deeply for his officers, his door is always open if they need to talk (or want to transfer), and he’s a warm presence for those on the force. (#cop dad.) it could be said that because he sent his daughter away, he views those under him on the force as his surrogate children, somewhere to put all his paternal affection, but it’s also possible that he’s just a good man at heart. though he hates the crimes that the gang and club commit, he doesn’t want them individually hurt; in fact, he wants them to be better, he wants them to give up the life and go clean. or at the very least, fuck off.
as of a few months ago, his daughter minnie has returned to charming, moving in with rick. though he was apprehensive at first, things in charming actually worse than when she left, and the fact that he hadn’t lived with her in a decade, he’s so happy to have her back, happiest he’s been in a long time. he has gotten quite used to being alone, though, so it’s been a bit of an adjustment to have her back. he really cherishes the time he gets with her but has a hard way of showing it, just like he does with practically anyone; it’s harder with his daughter, though. so much time has passed, so many regrets, he has to get to know his daughter all over again, this time as an adult.
he wasn’t totally alone before she returned, actually. two years before becoming captain, he adopted a black and tan coonhound after her original owners died, the station taking care of the case. with petula (as she was named before he got her) having nowhere to go and hating the idea of her going off to some shelter, rick took her home. there was also the fact that some of his detectives remarked that he was far too lonely and should get a dog lol. sometimes he brings tula to the station so she can hang around in his office, but mostly she just sleeps. she’s a sleepy girl in general, but has a loud ass bark.
hasn’t dated much since lily died. no one will come close to her, obviously, and he’s just a tough nut to crack in general. has a hard time opening up emotionally to anyone, even before lily’s death (it was a frequent problem in their marriage). does have some friends, but they’re also emotionally distant dads in their 50s. they go on an annual fishing trip to just drink some beers and watch airplane disaster reenactment shows and talk about tom clancy novels or whatever it is that dads do.
his job as captain is more administrative than any position he’s had before. he deals with the mayor’s office and the district attorney’s office frequently, so he’s not out on the street visiting crime scenes often unless it’s a huge crime that warrants it, or something officer involved.
secretly smokes despite telling everyone he doesn’t. wears the latest in dad fashion, Dadshion™ if you will. doesn’t smile very often but that doesn’t mean he’s not happy or that he’s mad, he’s just got resting bitch face. tho he is often mad. catch him walking his dog or irritating his daughter!!
wanted stuffs:
if ur character is part of the police department, let me know bc ur character now has a dad. unless you’re a dirty cop, then he’s a very disappointed dad. we’ll plot it all out individually, they can hate or love rick, they used to get along but something happened that soured the relationship, they don’t respect his authority, they think the department should work with the club/gang, whatever!
the constant criminal: if ur muse is constantly in and out of the holding cells at the station, they’ll often see rick. basically at this point when your muse is arrested, he’s rolling his eyes like “kid, we’ve talked about this. if you like here so much, just apply for a job as a file clerk or something.” they’ve got the antagonistic but borderline friendly, familiar relationship that ya see on all the cop shows.
the informant: so i guess this would be a whole thang, your muse informing on either the club or the gang, but someone’s gotta let the pd know what’s going on!! maybe your muse is in the club/gang but has become disillusioned over time, maybe they’re just close to someone in either, idk there’s plenty of reasons! of course their meetings will be in secret, but they’re on file as a CI.
enemies: i mean, he’s the police captain in a town full of criminals. pretty much everyone is an enemy until proven otherwise lol, but y’know your character hates cops and rick doesn’t really care about their opinion. we can discuss the details or maybe they hate cops in general.
friends: rick isn’t like, a totally miserable person. of course his friends would be more around his age and i’m pretty sure rick is currently the only person over 50 lol, but he’s gotta have a pal in someone on the dash!
someone he used to date: as mentioned above, rick isn’t good at dating and has only had like one or two relationships since his wife died, so obviously this relationship didn’t last very long. again, he’s in his 50s and i don’t think there are any female characters over 45, so this one’s a long shot but if you ever wanna bring an older lady and have her date rick in the past, i beg you to do so!! or just more older characters in general!!
someone that remembers minnie from ten years ago and is like “damn dude, that was rude af to send her away the same year her mom died” and he’ll be like suddenly i can’t read.
obviously this post is long as fuck so i don’t need to add to it anymore, but i’ve got tons more ideas! message me here or ask for my discord!

[ SEAN TEALE, MALE, HE/HIM, 31 ] Whenever I hear STARBOY by THE WEEKND it always makes me think of JACE TORRES. They have been so  ADEPT & CHARMING, but occasionally they have gotten a little bit CALCULATING & HEDONISTIC through the years. They currently work as a HOMICIDE DETECTIVE, a strangely fitting job for someone with loyalty to LAW ENFORCEMENT. A SCUFFED ZIPPO LIGHTER IN A BEATEN-UP BOX OF MARLBOROS CONTAINING ONLY ONE CIGARETTE, BLACK SHIRTS WITH THE SLEEVES ROLLED UP TO THE ELBOWS AND A WORN FAMILY PHOTO STUFFED INSIDE A LEATHER WALLET make them easy to spot on the strip.
CONNECTIONS.
His Partner: Every homicide detective has a partner. Whether or not they actually get along is another matter altogether. Perhaps there is some tension between Jace and his partner or maybe the two work extremely well together. Either way, these two were flung together the instant Jace stepped foot into the precinct and have been working alongside each other for the last three years. Regardless of how they view one another, there is a certain level of respect held between them. Given Jace’s strained relationship with his lifelong best friend, it goes without saying that he has some trust issues. While he understands the importance of trusting his partner, it remains somewhat a struggle for Jace to put his personal feelings aside and to allow himself to form a deep bond with another person, even if that person is his partner.
His Lifelong Friend: These two were joined together at the hip for the vast majority of their lives. Having practically grown up together, Jace and Callum ( name subject to change if wanted ) shared a brotherly connection and were best friends right into their adult lives. Once Jace seemingly disappeared, Callum had naturally mourned the loss of his best friend. It was through this grief that Callum found himself growing closer to Jace’s fiancée until the two eventually wound up together. Nowadays, considering the betrayal that Jace feels toward his once closest friend, the pair are no longer on good terms. Why or how Callum wound up in Las Vegas would be entirely open and up for discussion but I feel that having this kind of connection for Jace would truly develop his character and give more insight into his mindset and relationships.
His Ex-Fiancée: She and Jace met while he was part of the RAF. They dated for a few years until they became engaged. Jace truly thought that she was the one and thought he would spend the rest of his life with her. I imagine that she would have felt exactly the same but when she assumed she’d lost him forever, she found comfort in being around his best friend. Especially considering how Callum and Jace were extremely similar and shared such a close bond. Eventually, she wound up in a relationship with Callum and upon discovering that Jace was alive and well, I imagine she might have felt guilty. Whether or not she and Callum are still together would be up to the respective muns. Again, why and how she would wind up in Las Vegas would be entirely open to whoever would pick this connection up.
A Gang Member: This connection is still in the works but I feel like it could potentially be an interesting plot and fun to play out if somehow Jace wound up entangled with one of the gangs. Maybe it would be under a blackmail circumstance that ropes Jace into working for one of the gang’s members. Or maybe Jace decides to work undercover or has previously worked undercover in one of the gangs. This connection is open to any gang members and is entirely open for discussion.
BACKGROUND.
Jace Torres grew up in London an only child with middle-class parents who loved him beyond belief. His father was a beat cop, his mother was a care assistant. For the most part, Jace’s childhood was a moderately pleasant one even despite his families lack of wealth. They got by the best they could and with whatever means they could manage to amass.
Whenever Jace’s parents were working late, their neighbours would kindly look after the boy until he was able to return home. This was how Jace befriended a boy by the name of Callum. The two were inseparable, practically growing up together. They became brothers, taking each step in their lives together from childhood into adulthood.
Once the pair had graduated high school, they both set off to join the Royal Air Force together. At first, everything was going fine, even though Jace’s father had hopes of his only son following in his footsteps. Both Jace and Callum made names for themselves as the years passed by. They were respected and liked by their commanders and their comrades.
A few years later and Jace met the woman he later proposed to. The two were very much in love and Jace wholeheartedly believed he would spend the rest of his life with her. It had only been a few months into their engagement when Jace had gone missing, presumably dead.
While on a mission, his aircraft had fallen off the radar, his squadron believing he had possibly been shot down. Naturally, the worst possible outcome was assumed and after a failed search and rescue mission, Jace was announced officially missing.
It wasn’t until a few weeks later that news surfaced of Jace’s status. Having been rescued and hospitalised for minor injuries he had sustained, it was during this time that Jace realised that his lifelong friend and his fiancée had formed a relationship. Claiming that their belief that he had died had brought them together, their sudden romantic connection felt like the ultimate betrayal to Jace.
Once he was discharged from hospital, Jace moved back to live with his retired father. In the few weeks that he was gone, Jace’s mother had passed away leaving him riddled with guilt over not being there to say goodbye.
Following months of trying to get a handle on his life, Jace eventually decided to honour his father by becoming a police officer. Working as a cop for a few years, it wasn’t until his father succumbed to an illness that Jace decided it was time for him to truly move on.
Taking a job in New York where he served as a cop for the NYPD, Jace spent the following few years working himself to the bone to try and bring justice to the streets of the city. After a while, he found himself promoted within the ranks and becoming a homicide detective.
After a couple of years, Jace was offered a promotion that would take him to Las Vegas, continuing his work as a detective. Having moved to ‘Sin City’ three years ago, Jace was thirty when he arrived in Paradise and has never once looked back. While he is marginally aware of the wickedness and inequity that crawls through the streets, Jace is determined to continue bringing justice to those who fall victim to the immoral acts of Las Vegas’ finest criminals.
JACE IS CURRENTLY CLOSED & WRITTEN BY CHRISSIE.

The Case
Supernatural meets Law and Order, Part One
For the purpose of this Imagine, your character's name will be Mackenzie Reed.
You were in the library, sitting in your favorite chair and reading your book. It had been quiet for the past few weeks. No strange happenings or reports of monster attacks anywhere. With the lack of activity, you knew that there had to be something big on the horizon. Things hadn't gone this well for a long time. You just had no idea what it would be or when the other shoe would drop and all hell would break loose.
Sam was on his laptop, searching for cases. You came up behind him and leaned over his shoulder to see if he'd found anything. "How's it going, Sam? Find anything yet?" you asked.
He shook his head. "Nope. Zero, zilch, nada. I don't like it, either, Kenz. It's too quiet. Something's always causing trouble somewhere," Sam remarked.
You nodded. At that moment, Dean came in from the garage after giving the Impala a tune-up. As he walked down the stairs, he was wiping grease residue off of a socket wrench.
When he got to the bottom, he looked up and grinned lustily at the sight of your backside as you leaned over Sam's shoulder. Dean slowly approached you and without warning, grabbed you with one muscular arm and pulled you close to his side. "Hey, baby," he rumbled, his nose inches from yours. He quickly closed the gap by crashing his lips to yours in a slow, sensuous kiss.
You removed your arm from the back of Sam's chair and curled it around his neck, pulling him closer. "Is that a socket wrench in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" you sassed.
"It is a socket wrench, but I'm always happy to see you, sweetheart," Dean smirked.
Without missing a beat, Sam cleared his throat loudly. "Get a room, you two," he grumbled.
"We have one, don't we? C'mon baby," Dean grinned, scooping you up in his arms. You shrieked in surprise, allowing yourself to be carried away to your shared room.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Detectives Michael Logan and Lennie Briscoe approached the yellow tape marking the crime scene and ducked under it. "What have we got?" Logan asked.
"Strangest thing. Both vics have claw marks and look like they've been dragged here from somewhere else. Plus, their hearts are missing," the on-scene tech explained.
"Hearts are missing? It's not even Valentine's Day," Briscoe quipped.
Logan chuckled softly at his partner. "Anybody see anything?" he asked.
"Nope, happened during the night, sometime within the past eight hours or so, though. We'll know more when we get them back to the M.E.'s office," the tech remarked.
"Okay, thanks. Keep us posted," Logan replied.
"So, what do you suppose we're dealing with? Some crazed killer with claws like Freddie Kruger that cuts out people's hearts?" Briscoe asked.
Logan thought for a minute as they walked back to the car. "Not sure, Lennie, but I do know of someone who might be able to help us. She and her friends kind of specialize in this sort of weird stuff," he explained.
"'She', huh? What is she, Mike, an ex-girlfriend?" Briscoe chuckled.
"As a matter of fact, yeah, she is. Her name is Mackenzie Reed. A while back, she used to be a consultant for us on this kind of stuff, then she and I got together. Almost made it to three years," he grinned.
"So, what happened?" Briscoe asked.
"Kenzie moved back to Kansas when her folks died under what she said were 'mysterious circumstances'. Always thought she'd come back here to me, but she didn't, so we called it quits. We're still friends, though. Man, she sure was a spitfire back then, but I'll bet she's even more of one now," Logan smirked. "I'll give her a call later, see if she can come out of retirement and 'consult' for us again," he finished.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Kenzie, baby, answer your phone," Dean mumbled as he tried to nudge you awake. You slowly opened your eyes, trying to adjust to the light. You turned towards your nightstand where your buzzing phone was begging for your attention. You looked at the Caller ID. "Mmmf. Area code 917?? Who the hell--" you muttered as you answered. "Hello?" you mumbled.
"Is this Mackenzie Reed?" a man's voice asked.
"Who wants to know?" you demanded, now fully awake.
"Just your old friend from your consulting days with the NYPD," the voice teased.
You scrambled to a sitting position on the bed. "Logan? Is that you? What the hell are you calling me for?"
Dean was fully awake at this point, propping himself up on his elbow. He looked at you expectantly for information. You held up one finger to indicate that you would tell him as soon as you were done with the call.
"Listen, Kenz, we have the type of case that you and your uh, 'friends', specialize in. Do you think you could come out here to the 2-7 and consult for us again?" he asked.
"Mike, you know that I'm done with all of that. I don't 'consult' anymore, I'm out there in the field taking those kind of things down. And you know we operate, that our methods sometimes put us at odds with your sworn duty," you warned.
"Yeah, Kenzie, I know. But that doesn't really matter now. There's something going on here that I really think you and your friends can help us with," Logan pressed.
"Logan, are you going to keep beating around the bush, or are you just going to tell me what it is?" you retorted.
He gave a deep sigh before answering. "There were two vics in the park this morning. Claw marks, missing hearts and they looked like they were dragged to the park from somewhere else. That's as much as we have for now," Logan explained.
You closed your eyes and pinched the bridge of your nose. "Dammit. I knew it was too quiet for too long," you muttered. "Let me talk to the boys, and I'll call you back," you replied then disconnected the call. "Shall we get some breakfast?" you asked quickly.
"Wait a minute on breakfast. What's going on, Kenz? Who was that on the phone?" Dean demanded.
"That was Detective Michael Logan from the 27th Precinct, NYPD," you replied. "He said they have a couple of victims that have all the signs of being killed possibly by a werewolf," you explained.
"Michael Logan? As in your ex-boyfriend, Michael Logan?" Dean wondered, fully sitting up now.
"Yes, Dean, Logan and I were together for almost three years. I came home here when my parents were killed by those vampires. Logan thought that I would go back to NYC, to him. I stayed here to hunt instead, so we broke up. Then I met you and Sam, and now I'm with you. Trust me, Michael Logan is ancient history," you replied.
"So....he's ancient history, but he still has your number in his phone?" Dean persisted.
"Dean, sweetheart," you started, turning to face him. You took both of his hands in yours and locked eyes with him. "You and I have a much deeper connection than Logan and I ever had. Logan and I will always be friends, but YOU are the one that I love. The one I want to sleep next to every night and wake up to every morning that Chuck allows me to. I don't want to go back to that life I had in New York. I want this life. In Kansas. With you, Dean," you finished.
"I love you, Kenz," Dean whispered, pulling you close and mashing his lips into yours. His hands roamed all over your body, up and down your back, his fingers running through your hair. His mouth moved frantically against yours, as if trying to devour you. He gently laid you back down on the bed as he hovered over you. Then he moved to your neck, peppering it with kisses and soft nibbles here and there.
"I love you, Dean," you replied softly as your hands slipped up to cradle his head. Your fingers moved into his hair, teasing the ones at the base of his neck. Goosebumps instantly began to appear, and Dean groaned in appreciation. "Not fair, sweetheart," he growled. He returned his attention to your mouth, where he smoothly slid his tongue in to explore. Dean reached behind him and pulled the blankets back over the two of you. Breakfast would just have to wait a little while longer.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
You and Dean briefed Sam on the situation in New York, with the possible werewolf attack in the park. Sam had much the same reaction that you did, that he knew it had been too quiet for too long.
"So, what happens now, Kenz?" Sam asked.
"Not sure. I told Logan I wanted to run everything by you two before committing to anything," you answered.
"Logan? Is that the, uh--" Dean cut in. "Yeah, that's him," he muttered. "Oh," was all Sam said.
"Dean," you replied with a warning tone. Dean held his hands up in surrender and you continued. "Listen. Logan knows what we do, and he also knows that our methods are not exactly entirely legal. Knowing all of this, though, he still asked for our help. If we're going to do this, it's all of us or none of us. Are we in?" you asked.
"Yeah, I'm in," Dean agreed. "Count me in, too," Sam replied.
"Good, I'll call Logan and let him know. Then, we'll get the particulars down on how we're going to work this case. Mike and Lennie are going to want to get started on this right away," you explained.
You looked at Dean, because this next part was going to affect him the most. "Easiest way is to fly there, but I know you would rather drive, Dean. So, I'll fly out there first, do some preliminary investigating, see what their case files and M.E.'s report have to say. You guys take the Impala, that way we aren't without our arsenal. Somehow, I have a feeling that this is going to get worse before it gets better," you muttered.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Back at the precinct, Detective Logan was anxiously waiting for a phone call. It sure was great talking with her again, he thought. Still has that velvety smooth voice. Damn, I'll bet she looks good, too. Chasing after monsters and all that has to keep her in shape. Ah, knock it off, Logan, he berated himself. She's probably moved on, maybe with one of the guys she's living with. A ringing phone interrupted his thoughts. "2-7 Homicide, Detective Logan speaking," he answered.
"If we're going to do this, we'll need some considerations," you started.
"Such as?" Logan asked.
"Total secrecy. The less people that know, the better. We can't have word getting out about werewolves and the other things that go bump in the night being real. If it does, you'll have chaos on your hands," you remarked.
"Yeah, I can see how that would happen," Logan stated.
"I'll fly out first, go over your case files, M.E.'s report, whatever you have. The guys will come in by car with our gear and join the investigation in progress," you mentioned.
"Okay," Logan said.
"Next, we want to run point on this. It has to be done our way or no way. You came to me because you know my background, and that I know what I'm talking about. The guys I work with are no different, in fact, they're better than me in some areas. I trust them with my life and they trust me with theirs. That doesn't come easy in our world, Mike," you stated.
"Gotcha," he acknowledged.
"Lastly, and this is most important: we do our job, no strings and no OFFICIAL interference. A virtual 'Get-Out-of-Jail-Free' card with no expiration date. No parking tickets or speeding tickets, either. We have to be free to do things our way. We can't have someone looking over our shoulder or trying to find something to arrest us with," you added.
"That last part may be tricky, but we'll make it work," Logan promised.
"Understand, Mike, that it's an all-or-nothing deal. It all works or we don't. It's that simple," you finished.
A pause, then Logan said, "So, what time does your flight get here, Kenzie?" you could hear his smirk through the phone, so you disconnected. "Smug bastard," you muttered.
Sam and Dean looked at you expectantly. "Well?" Dean asked.
"He agreed to everything, all of it, just like I said. We do this our way, no 'official' interference," you confirmed.
"That's my girl! Playing hardball with the big, bad NYPD," Dean grinned as he put his arm around you. "Good job, sweetheart," he said as he kissed your forehead.
"Yeah, that's me, a regular badass negotiator," you muttered as you pulled away from Dean.
"You okay, Kenz? Talk to me, what's wrong, baby?" Dean asked as he caught your hand in his.
"I don't know, Dean. Something about all of this seems....off. First we go weeks with no hunts, so we start to relax, even if only for a little bit. Then this comes up, and somehow, I don't think werewolves will be the end of it. Plus, we'll be in one of the biggest cities in the country. We normally do our job with a certain level of secrecy, but you can't hide in New York City. Not with as many people as there are in the city. We'll be so much more exposed to danger than we normally are because we can't hide what we do," you explained.
Dean hooked his finger under your chin and tilted your face up to gaze into your hazel eyes. "Hey. We're going to be fine, sweetheart. You know how I know that? You, me and Sammy are gonna go in there, we're gonna do our job our way, then it'll be done. Afterwards, maybe we can stick around for a bit, see some of the sights, hmm?" he murmured as he wrapped his arms around you.
"Well, maybe we could do that," you replied. Dean reached up with his right hand and cupped your cheek. You closed your eyes and leaned into his touch, then kissed his palm. You laid your head on Dean's shoulder as he tightened his embrace around you. "I love you, Dean," you said.
"I love you too, Kenzie. C'mon, let's get you packed and ready to fly out to that Big Apple they have there," Dean chuckled.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The plane touched down at LaGuardia Airport at 3:46pm, just as it was supposed to do. You retrieved your carry-on bag from the overhead compartment and made your way off the plane. You wandered down to the baggage claim area to pick up your checked bag.
Before you got there, you spotted Detectives Briscoe and Logan scanning the crowd for you. It wasn't long before Logan's eyes found yours and a big smile broke out over his face. He started walking towards you, until the gap had closed and he caught you in a friendly embrace.
"Heya, Kenz," Logan murmured in your ear. "Hey yourself, Logan," you responded. You drew back from each other and you turned towards Logan's partner. "Detective Lennie Briscoe? I'd like to you meet Mackenzie Reed. Kenz, this is my partner, Lennie," Logan remarked.
You stuck your hand out for Det. Briscoe to shake. "You can call me Kenzie or Kenz. How you doin', Detective?" you asked.
"Nice to meet you, Kenzie. Shall we, uh, head back to the house and you can tell us what we're up against?" Lennie suggested.
"Sounds good," you agreed. "Hey, who's in charge of you yahoos, Logan? Is it still Lt. VanBuren?" you wondered.
"Yeah. Hey! I'll bet she'll be happy to see you after all these years," Logan grinned.
"Did you tell her I was coming? Oh, I hope not!" you grinned. "I want to surprise her. I can't wait to see her, too," you remarked.
You climbed into the back of Briscoe and Logan's cruiser and headed back to the precinct. They walked into the squad room with you ducked behind them. Lt. VanBuren walked out of her office, hands on her hips.
"Where have you two been? You left to go get coffee over an hour ago," VanBuren retorted.
"We were picking up our consultant from the airport," Logan answered.
"Well? Where is this mystery consultant?" VanBuren demanded.
Briscoe and Logan stepped aside so that you could step forward. "Right here, LT!"
"Kenzie?!? Oh, my god! How the hell are you, kiddo?? Get over here, girl, and give me a hug," VanBuren exclaimed.
You reached her in two strides. "Good to see you, LT," you grinned as you gave each other a heartfelt embrace.
"Let's go to my office and catch up, shall we?" VanBuren suggested.
"Sounds good to me, lead the way," you replied with a grin.
You closed the door to her office behind you and took a seat in one of the empty chairs. "So," VanBuren started. "You here to help Briscoe and Logan out with that case they picked up yesterday?" she asked.
"Yep," you answered. "I'd rather wait until my boys get here before we jump into any specifics. That way we say everything only once, and nothing gets lost in translation," you explained.
"Okay, I can live with that. 'Your boys', huh?" she chuckled. "You just work with these guys, are you friends with them, or is there one in particular you're hot about?" she teased.
"LT! I can't believe you asked me that. To answer your question," you both laughed. "No, these guys are more than work buddies, more than friends. They're my family," you replied softly. "Although, there is one of them that has a little more of my heart than the other. His name is Dean, and he's wonderful," you gushed.
"'Wonderful', huh? You got a picture of Mr. Wonderful you feel like sharing?" she asked.
You pulled out your phone and showed her your favorite picture of you and Dean. It was taken only a few weeks ago when you and Dean had gone stargazing one night. He said he wanted to take a picture of the two of you as you lay on the hood of the Impala. You were both looking at the camera, but at the last second, you turned your head and kissed him.
"Ooh, girl, your man is FINE! If I wasn't married," she trailed off and you both burst out laughing.
At that moment, your phone rang, with the Caller ID showing it was Dean. "Hey, Kenzie, just wanted to let you know that we are on the way to New York City for this case. Should be there sometime tomorrow afternoon. I miss you, sweetheart. It's lonely sleeping without you, baby," Dean remarked.
"I know, Dean. I miss you too. You and Sam drive careful, and we'll be together again soon. I told the lieutenant that we would wait and brief everybody when you and Sam get here," you said.
"Good thinking. Hey, I have to let you go for now. We only stopped for gas and snacks, and it's time to hit the road again. I love you, Kenzie," Dean replied.
"I love you too, Dean. Bye," you said as you hung up the phone.
"So this is what young love looks like," VanBuren observed. "You two are about the cutest thing ever, you know that?"
"He's my world, LT. I mean, we've only been together for five years. But, I can't see myself living out the rest of my years with anyone else. He's kind, strong, loyal, funny as hell, and sensitive. Although he'd probably kick my butt for using that last word to describe him," you chuckled. "I love him," you said simply as you shrugged your shoulders.
Logan knocked on the lieutenant's door and poked his head in. "Hey, you girls done gossiping yet, 'cuz we just got another call about a body," he explained.
You slapped your hands on your knees and stood. "Guess it's time for me to punch in. Great talking with you LT. Dean said they should be here sometime in the afternoon tomorrow, so I'll have him meet us here. Then I can bring him up to speed, and we can share our intel with everyone," you remarked.
"Sounds good. See you later, Kenzie. And hey? Say 'goodnight' to Dean for me, will ya?" she smirked. You laughed and gave her a mock salute as you followed Logan out to the car.

&&. word has it ( christian bennet ) was just spotted around the city. ( he ) is a ( 34 ) year old affiliated with ( the nypd ). it’s been said that ( he ) resembles ( ben barnes ). ( he ) has been said to be ( loyal & hard-working ) but also quite ( uncertain & introverted ). ( he ) is currently serving as ( a detective for the organized crimes unit ).
— ❝ it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.❞
( hi there, kiwi here! this is the official intro for christian bennet, a detective for the nypd working in the organized crimes unit. my quintessential “good guy”, i’m really excited to see where this group takes christian. please let me know if you’d like to plot; i’m available through both the group’s discord and tumblr ims. ♡ )
name: christian james bennet
birthplace: savannah, georgia
birthday: june 11th | thirty-four | gemini
scent: vanilla and caramel
appearance: 6′3″; tall, broad, all-around large. christian is almost comically the exact opposite as far as build and form goes from his younger sister, emmaline. christian could be described as the very definition of a gentle giant; though he is strong, muscular, and toned from years of training to be a detective, he’s genteel and caring with everyone he meets. christian has a mop of dark brown hair, eyes so dark they’re nearly black, and prefers to keep a full beard (nice and groomed, of course!) at all times.
christian tends to wear button downs, slacks, and suits at work; outside of work, though, he tends to be much more laid-back. sweaters, v-neck shirts, jeans, and jackets are his go to. he’s humble to the core, primarily from the way his parents taught him to cherish and appreciate the little things in life.
personality: loyal, hard-working, kind, introverted, uncertain, determined, ambitious, giving.
biography: christian bennet was born to two lovely, humble parents in savannah, georgia; farmers who sold their produce to local grocers and at stands in farmer’s markets. christian spent most of his childhood wrapped in the embrace of these two loving, gentle-hearted southerners; his father was intelligent and capable, his mother strong and productive, but neither ever saw the need to live beyond their means; rather, they were content to sit and use his abilities to protect and provide for their loved ones. as he grew up, Christian’s mother told him that no gift in the world was greater than kindness; that he ought to treat others with warmth, compassionate, and kindness--as if they were members of his own family. eventually, the two had a second child, a young, doe-eyed girl named emmaline…and christian loved her with the entirety of his heart.
christian’s family was warm, welcoming, and wholesome; he grew up, graduated high school, and was planning to attend university to work towards a degree in criminal justice and forensics. however, when christian was nearing nineteen years old and ready to fully immerse himself into his studies, his world shifted and shattered beneath him. his parents had gone out on a date one evening, leaving his younger sister in the care of a sitter; christian received a phone call hours later that his mother and father had been in a terrible accident, and both were declared dead at the scene. suddenly, christian’s wholesome family had broken and cracked apart, leaving him and his baby sister, still in her toddler years at this point, orphaned and alone. christian abandoned pursuing university full-time and instead worked hard through two jobs, adopting emmaline into his care and raising both of them on the small inheritance their parents had left behind for them. he worked part-time as a server as he put himself through the police academy, eventually becoming a rookie cop. still, he worked tirelessly to provide for his sister, making sure she had the love, support, and financial security any parent would have been able to provide for her.
eventually, christian was able to work his way up the ranks, attending night school to receive the diploma he had originally sought after, and he was informed by a friend--a retired cop who had moved to new york to be with his own ailing father--about an opportunity to join the organized crime bureau in new york city, providing he had the experience and records to prove he was worthy. so, by the time christian was twenty-seven, he had applied and been accepted as a fledgling detective in the nypd, and he and emmaline packed their belongings and moved to the great, wide city of new york to start a new life together.
christian soon became consumed by and dedicated to his job. with a rigid sense of morals and ethics, christian is determined to help reduce crime in new york and dismantle the threat that organized crime leaves for civilians.
eventually, christian had a fateful encounter with a young investigative journalist who was busy poking around in business related to a homicide christian was investigating. he ended up saving her from getting involved in the crossfire, and despite the fact that becoming involved with a member of the media was strictly against the code of conduct, christian ended up falling head-over-heels in love with lilianna shu lei. the two became inseparable; christian loved her for her strength and character, for the way she treated his younger sister (whom christian definitively thought of as his daughter at this point), and for the fierce and devoted way in which she tended to all things she loved and cared for in life. she eventually moved into the brooklyn flat he and emmaline shared, becoming an integral part of his life. christian had rebuilt the perfect little family for himself, he thought; though he missed his parents every single day, he had a woman he loved and a family in his younger sister.
but then one day, everything changed. and christian’s life cracked apart once more.
emmaline had been acting strangely; more distant than he remembered her ever being. and then one day, there was a report--there had been a fire, and emmaline had been involved in it. she was declared dead at the scene, and christian could barely hear the words of condolence and sorrow people offered him through his own grief. he completely shut down, rejecting anything and everything around him. no one believed him, but christian was determined that his sister had not been killed; her body had never been found--no body easily identified had ever been found--and christian was skeptical. he grieved the way a parent would for their child, but he also became consumed with a conspiracy that his sister was alive somewhere, taken by one of the mafias as punishment for him investigating them.
christian began to behave more recklessly than he ever did before; he started investigating mafia hangouts and dens off-duty. he knew that he was becoming obsessed with the world of organized crime, perhaps more than he had ever been professionally, but his grief and denial had completely taken over his life. he felt guilty for his grief; he blamed himself for the way he had pulled away from everyone in his life--including lilianna--and felt guilty for his sister’s disappearance to begin with. christian did not think he was worthy of his badge or the honor of being emmaline’s guardian or even lilianna’s lover. he told lilianna that he didn’t think he was equipped to be in a relationship, despite the way it broke his heart, and felt grief overwhelm him like a cloud.
but he was lost, he was alone, and the last person he wanted to hurt by being a failure was the one woman he loved more than anything in the world.
it’s been a few months since emmaline “died”, and christian still believes (much to the dismay of his partners at the nypd, his friends, and even lilianna) that his sister is out there, alive somewhere. waiting for him, perhaps. he and lilianna remain best friends, though she no longer lives with him. he misses her every single day and wishes he could tell her he still loves her. but after the way he failed emmaline and then, consequently, failed lilianna emotionally, christian doesn’t think he’s quite good enough for anyone.

Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
Birthday: December 31st
Zodiac Sign: Capricorn

→ His Personality
After witnessing the death of his entire family and barely surviving an attempt on his own life, Winston Abioye became heavily fixated on revenge against the Jenkin’s Hunter Family. Despite his obsession with revenge and brutal methods, he has a great deal of respect for his close friends, namely Douglas Gish and Churchill Darling. Winston also shows both an envious side and a respectful side in regards to his superiors; Sirius Cobic and Vincent Kane. Winston dislikes his reputation in the Chicago Police Department, a dirty detective. He is considering bringing in a new form to win the heart of Chicago PD. His dirty detective role was built up to gain the trust of the local gangs and to eventually stop them and the distribution of street drugs. After cleaning up the streets and making a big drug bust, Winston moved to the homicide branch and made the mistake of keeping his same form. Winston is very proud of his African heritage, being particularly defensive of other human shifters taking on ethnic forms who are unfamiliar to them, and human shifters who stereotype ‘people of color’ or take on their forms for political reasons. Winston, himself refuses to take on other ethnicities or forms that are not of African origins.

A detective's brutal first case could make or break her career in an exhilarating thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg.
A video of Deputy Eve Ronin's off-duty arrest of an abusive movie star goes viral, turning her into a popular hero at a time when the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is plagued by scandal. The sheriff, desperate for more positive press, makes Eve the youngest female homicide detective in the department's history.
Now Eve, with a lot to learn and resented by her colleagues, has to justify her new badge. Her chance comes when she and her burned-out, soon-to-retire partner are called to the blood-splattered home of a missing single mother and her two kids. The horrific carnage screams multiple murder--but there are no corpses.
Eve has to rely on her instincts and tenacity to find the bodies and capture the vicious killer, all while battling her own insecurities and mounting pressure from the media, her bosses, and the bereaved family. It's a deadly ordeal that will either prove her skills...or totally destroy her.

REVIEW
Movieland by Lee Goldberg
Eve Ronin #4
Eve Ronin doesn’t seem to get a break…unless perhaps a bone is broken. That said, she can outmaneuver and outpolitic a few of the high muckety-mucks…at least as long as she has Duncan at her side…though that might not be much longer as he readies for retirement. This time Eve is still dealing with colleagues who wish her ill will as well as tackling a murder case that could involve a serial killer while juggling her job, her family, a series being developed based on her life and…a few other things.
What I liked: * Eve: young, intrepid, strong, intelligent, brash, outspoken, magnet for pain, has a lot to learn as well as a lot of growing up to do. I want to know more about her and wonder how she will look a decade from now.
* Duncan: wise, seasoned, smart, decades on the job, great detective, has always gone by the book, is challenged by Eve, up for retirement soon, loving husband and father, perfect job partner for Eve
* The way Eve and Duncan worked together as a team
* The view into the political aspects of the police world
* Seeing Eve’s family again
* The few colleagues that have Eve’s back
* The romance that might be developing between Eve’s sister and someone Eve works with
* The setting – used to live in Southern California so names are familiar
* The writing, plot, and that all the loose ends were tied up at the end
* The police procedural aspect of the story with the threads followed and where they led
* Knowing that there will be another book to look forward to in this series
* All of it really except…
 What I didn’t like
* The people and events I was meant not to like
* Not a dislike but the thought that Eve might want/need to have a book or two where she is not injured and put into the hospital
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I rad more in this series? Definitely.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 4-5 Stars
        BLURB
Malibu Creek State Park is a beautiful locale for campers, tourists, hikers, and Hollywood. For Detective Eve Ronin, it’s a backdrop for murder in a riveting thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg. For decades Malibu Creek State Park was the spectacular natural setting where Hollywood fantasies were made. But when a female camper is gunned down, it becomes a real-life killing ground. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives Eve Ronin and Duncan Pavone are assigned the case…which Duncan fears is the latest in a series of sniper attacks that began long before Eve came to Lost Hills. Seven victims over fourteen months…and top officials still refuse to see a connection. Eve and Duncan are stonewalled, threatened, and ordered to keep quiet. But Eve won’t back down. She’s no stranger to intimidation or corruption—she’s had a target on her back from day one at Lost Hills station. Despite finding no evidentiary links between the shootings, Eve and Duncan follow their instincts into the shadows of Malibu Creek, where it’s not enough to expose the secrets and break the conspiracy of silence. They also have to make it out alive.

NYPD Officer Who Murdered Eight People For The Mob Dies In Prison Annie Garau 2 years ago Murderer Stephen Caracappa — also known as the "Mafia Cop" — died in prison Saturday. Stephen Caracappa Linda Rosier/NY Daily News Archive via Getty Images Mafia cop Stephen Caracappa leaves Brooklyn Federal Court where he and fellow retired Detective Louis Eppolito were on trial, accused of killing for the mob and selling confidential information that resulted in the murders of informants and suspected informants. Stephen Caracappa, an NYPD cop who murdered and leaked police information for the mafia, died in prison on Saturday. The 75-year-old and his partner, Louis Eppolito, had been given life sentences in 2009 after committing at least eight murders for the Italian mob from 1986 to 1990. While a member of Brooklyn’s Organized Crime Homicide Unit, Caracappa was paid $375,000 by the Lucchese crime family to leak information and kill members of opposing mobs — as well as a diamond dealer, a painters’ union leader and a man suspected of leaking mob information to law enforcement. In 1994, the Lucchese family’s notorious boss, Anthony “Gaspipe” Casso, reported both Caracappa and Eppolito’s involvement to police. “I have two detectives that work the major squad team for the New York Police Department,” Casso told 60 Minutes‘ Ed Bradley during a prison interview in 1998. “Lou Eppolito and Steve — he’s got a long last name, Ca…Capis…” Already convicted for 36 murders himself, Casso spoke freely of the crimes the cops had committed on his orders. “They put him in the car,” he said — referring to Caracappa and Eppolito’s kidnapping of Jimmy Hydell, a rival crime family associate. “The kid thought they were taking him to the station-house. But they took him to a garage. When they got to the garage, they laid him on the floor; they tied his feet, his handcuffs, put him in the trunk of the car. After that, I killed the kid myself. At the time, I gave Louis and Steve I think $45,000 for delivering him to me.” Casso apparently hoped his cooperation would lead to a reduction of his life sentence. It didn’t and cops were unable to prove the allegations at the time. In 2005, though, Brooklyn gangster Burton Kaplan decided to flip sides. His testimony against Caracappa and Eppolito was crucial to their conviction. “It’s ludicrous,” Caracappa said during his own 60 Minutes interview a month after the trial. “Anybody that knows me, knows I love the police department. I couldn’t kill anybody. I shot a guy once on the job, and I still think about it. It bothers me.” But that feigned morality couldn’t stack up against the growing mountain of evidence: Hydell’s mother remembered the detectives coming to her house and asking about her son a few hours before he was killed. A garage worker showed investigators the site where he said Caracappa and Eppolito had buried a body in Brooklyn. Casso described paying the men $75,000 to kill Eddie Lino, a Gambino family captain. “They killed him, like, cowboy style,” he said. “They pulled alongside of him. They shot him. They made him crash into the fence alongside the Belt Parkway on the service road.” Lino was found in broad daylight, slumped over his steering wheel and covered with nine bullet holes. There was also a paper trail. Caracappa had used police computers to track down information on the whereabouts of Casso’s enemies — including Nicholas Guido. Looking back through Caracappa’s search history, investigators saw that he had actually pulled the address of a different Nicholas Guido — mistakenly leading Casso to kill an innocent man. “I don’t know if it’s a coincidence,” Caracappa said of the murder of a random man unassociated with mob activity whose address he had printed off the computer just days before his death. “But, if I did anything and I had to run a name, it’s down on paper and it’s documented why I did it…. And, who I did it for. And, I definitely didn’t do it for any wise guy.” When huge crackdowns in the mid-1990’s led to arrests in every major New York crime family, Eppolito and Caracappa decided it would be a good time to move to Las Vegas. Though they claimed to have retired, it was later proven that they spent the ’90s dealing drugs and unsuccessfully plotting to kill multiple former mob members. Eppolito — who was actually related to several prominent crime family members (a fact he had failed to disclose on his police application) — also enjoyed writing and acting. In 1992, he wrote a book titled “Mafia Cop: The Story of an Honest Cop Whose Family Was in the Mob,” in which he describes how hard it was to rise above a life of crime. He leaves the courthouse for lunch with his wife, Fran and other family members. The city spent $18.4 million to settle lawsuits with the families of Caracappa and Eppolito’s victims. “These two lowlifes shot and killed my father,” Edward Lino’s son yelled at their sentencing. “May you have a long life in prison.” In the end, though, Caracappa wouldn’t even serve a decade. In 2016 he wrote Federal Judge Jack Weinstein a letter, begging for a “compassionate release.” “Please know I have been fighting the case in the courts,” the handwritten petition reads. “I have stage 4 cancer and will not survive.” The judge likely considered the former cop’s laundry list of convictions — labor racketeering, narcotics, illegal gambling, obstruction of justice, extortion, conspiracy to commit murder, narcotics possession, and eight counts of murder — before penning his response. “There is nothing I can do in your c

Synopsis:
“WE HAVE YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO.”
That’s the text message Supreme Court Justice Arnold Hirschfeld receives as hearings commence in the U.S. Supreme Court to determine the fate of the 28th Amendment – enacted to criminalize abuse of power on the part of our political representatives.
In court to defend the amendment, retired U.S. District Court Judge Cyrus Brooks observes his old friend and law school classmate Hirschfeld acting strangely and dispatches veteran D.C. homicide detective Frank Lotello to find out why.
In the meantime, Hirschfeld’s precocious and feisty 11-year-old diabetic granddaughter Cassie, brutally kidnapped to control her grandfather’s swing vote upholding or invalidating the amendment, watches her insulin pump running dry and wonders which poses her greatest threat, the kidnappers or the clock. As Brooks is forced to choose between saving our nation or saving the girl.
Editorial Reviews
“THE AMENDMENT KILLER is tense, timely, and terrific!” -Lee Child, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of the Jack Reacher novels
“With an unparalleled sense of terror forewarned on the opening page, Ron Barak’s THE AMENDMENT KILLER is a high-speed, tense political thriller about one of today’s most fundamental issues, the integrity of our SupremeCourt.” – Andrew Gross, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The One Man
“THE AMENDMENT KILLER is a high concept, hybrid blend of a political, psychological and action thriller all rolled into a smooth, savory, and suspenseful mix. Ron Barak manages to channel the best of John Grisham, David Baldacci and even Steve Berry in this amazingly timely tale cast with a SupremeCourt backdrop. As prescient as it is thought-provoking and as much fun as it is factual, this is reading entertainment of the highest order. I’d be shocked if this book doesn’t become a bestseller.” – Jon Land, USA Today bestselling author of Strong Light of Day
“From its electrifying opening line to its powerful conclusion, THE AMENDMENT KILLER is a ripped from tomorrow’s headlines story of law and politics set against the backdrop of the Supreme Court. But more so, it’s a story about the lengths we will go for the ones we love. Timely, fast-paced, and heartfelt, you’ll mourn the turning of the last page. Ron Barak is a writer to watch.” – Anthony Franze, author of The Outsider
“Ron Barak’s THE AMENDMENT KILLER is easily the best high stakes legal thriller we’ve read in 2017.” – Best Thriller Magazine

Chapter 1
Tuesday, May 6, 6:30 am
We have your granddaughter. Here’s what you need to do.
Thomas T. Thomas III reviewed the language. Again. He closed the phone without hitting send. Yet.
He stared through high-powered binoculars from atop the wooded knoll. As always, the girl hit one perfect shot after another.
Cassie Webber. Age 11. He’d been tailing her for three months. It seemed longer.
She was chaperoned everywhere she went. Two-a-day practices before and after school. Her dad drove her in the morning. He watched her empty bucket after bucket and then dropped her off at school. Her mom picked her up after school, ferried her back to the practice range, and brought her home after daughter and coach finished. Mom and daughter sometimes ran errands on the way, but always together. Even on the occasional weekend outing to the mall or the movies, the girl was constantly in the company of family or friends. Having someone hovering over me all day would have driven me batshit.
His childhood had been different. When Thomas was her age, he walked to school on his own. And he lived a lot farther away than the girl. His daddy had never let his driver chauffeur him around. Wasn’t about to spoil him. Spare the rod, spoil the child. Didn’t spoil me that way either.
He kept telling himself patience was the key. But his confidence was waning. And then, suddenly, he’d caught a break. The girl’s routine had changed.
She started walking the few blocks between school and practice on her own. Dad dropped her off at morning practice and Mom met her at afternoon practice instead of school. Only a ten minute walk each way, but that was all the opening he needed.
Everything was finally in place. He would be able to make amends. He would not let them down.
This time.
She completed her morning regimen, unaware of Thomas’s eyes trained on her from his tree-lined vantage point. No doubt about it, he thought to himself. She was incredibly good. Driven. Determined.
And pretty.
Very pretty.
He relieved himself, thinking about her. A long time . . . coming. Haha! As the girl disappeared into the locker room, he trekked back down the hill, and climbed into the passenger side of the van. He returned the binoculars to their case. He removed the cell from his pocket, and checked the pending text one more time.
Moments later, the girl emerged from the locker room, golf bag exchanged for the backpack over her shoulders. She ambled down the winding pathway, waved to the uniformed watchman standing next to the guardhouse, and crossed through the buzzing security gate. She headed off to school.
Without taking his eyes off her, Thomas barked at the man sitting next to him. “Go.”
Chapter 2
Tuesday, May 6, 7:00 am
Eloise Brooks stared at Cyrus and shook her head. After more than 50 years of marriage, she understood everything about him there was to understand. Still: “I take the time to make you a nice breakfast. The least you could do is eat it while it’s hot.”
She held the warm cup of tea in both hands. “And can’t you talk to me, Cyrus? Why do you treat me like I’m not here? Like I’m some kind of a potted plant.”
Cyrus moved the eggs around on his plate. Speared a bite of fruit, swallowed it, but showed no visible pleasure in it. “I’m eating. What do you want to talk about? You think the couple cut from Dancing With The Stars last night deserved to be sent packing?”
“Should have got the hook weeks ago. You dance better than he does. Even with your two left feet.”
He didn’t answer. She knew why. “What’re you thinking about? Esposito? Whether 50,000 is enough? Your two left feet?”
“All of the above.”
She gazed at him but said nothing. Notwithstanding his apparent disinterest in the plate of food in front of him, his appetite—and his imagination—were never-ending. He loved upbeat music and dancing. And sports. He couldn’t carry a tune or dance a lick. Except for an occasional round of golf, his sports these days were mostly played out in front of the television. But that didn’t stop him from daydreaming. He danced like Fred Astaire. He sang and played guitar and harmonica like Bob Dylan. He moved around a tennis court like Roger Federer.
However, Eloise knew his real passion in life was the law. He had enjoyed a distinguished legal career, first as a trial lawyer and then as a U.S. District Court judge. Now retired from the bench, writing and teaching, and occasionally trying a case that got his hackles up, when it came to the law, those who knew Cyrus Brooks knew he was second to none. Amazing how sometimes he exuded that—with confidence bordering on arrogance—but at other times did not. More so since Frank Lotello had been shot, and barely survived.
Brooks sat there fidgeting restlessly with the newspaper. Eloise reached over and put her hand on his. “You’ll be great, Cyrus. I need to walk Ryder and get dressed, so we can drive into Court together. Please make sure Maccabee’s dishes have enough water and dry cat snacks.”
Arguments in the case were scheduled to commence in barely two hours. The chance to appear before the United States Supreme Court was rare, even for Brooks, but to do it in a landmark case that could permanently change the U.S. political landscape was unparalleled.
When they were first married, Eloise often attended Cyrus’s court appearances, both to show her support and because the judicial process was new to her. Now long accustomed to Cyrus’s legal adventures, Eloise was a less frequent visitor to the courtroom. Given the importance of this case, she told Cyrus the night before that she planned to attend.
He looked up absently with a gentle, distant smile, still fixed in some far-off place, no doubt grateful for her efforts to distract him, and bolster his confidence. “Macc’s snacks? Sure.”
Chapter 3
Tuesday, May 6, 7:20 am
Cassie left the practice range, looking momentarily at the clock on her phone. School began at eight. She had plenty of time.
She strolled along the familiar middle-class neighborhood route to school, sticking to the tree-hugged, concrete sidewalk. Well-kept houses on modest-sized manicured lots, one after another, adorned both sides of the paved street that divided the opposing sidewalks.
Mouthing the words to the song streaming through her earbuds, she made a mental note of a few questions from her morning practice to ask Coach Bob that afternoon.
Using her ever present designer sunglasses—a gift from her grandparents—to block the sun’s glare, Cassie texted her best friend Madison:
Hey, BFF, meet u in cafeteria in 10. Out after 1st period to watch ur mom & my poppy in S Ct—how dope is that? 2 excited 4 words!
As she hit “Send,” she was startled by the sound of screeching tires. She looked up from her phone and saw a van skid to the curb a few houses ahead of her. A man in a hoodie jumped out and charged straight at her.
She froze for an instant, but then spun and raced back in the direction of the clubhouse. “Help! Help!! Someone help me!!!”
As she ran, she looked all around. No one. She saw no one. The guard kiosk was in sight, but still over a block away. Does he want to hurt me? Why? Why me?
Hearing the man gaining on her, she tried to speed up. If I can just get close enough to the gatehouse for someone to help me. She glanced back, shrieking at the top of her lungs, just as the man lunged. He knocked her to the ground, shattering her glasses in the process. “What do you want?! Leave me alone! Get off me!!!”
She saw him grappling with a large syringe. “No!” She screamed even louder, clawing and kicking him savagely—until she felt the sharp stab in the back of her neck. Then nothing.

  Author Bio:
Described by his readers as a cross between Agatha Christie, Lee Child, and John Lescroart, bestselling author Ron Barak keeps his readers flipping the pages into the wee hours of the night. While he mostly lets his characters tell his stories, he does manage to get his licks in too.
Barak derives great satisfaction in knowing that his books not only entertain but also stimulate others to think about how things might be, how people can actually resolve real-world problems. In particular, Barak tackles the country’s dysfunctional government representatives—not just back-seat driving criticism for the sake of being a back-seat driver, but truly framing practical remedies to the political abuse and corruption adversely affecting too many people’s lives today. Barak’s extensive legal background and insight allow him to cleverly cross-pollinatepollenate his fiction and today’s sad state of political reality.
In his latest novel, THE AMENDMENT KILLER, Barak calls upon his real world legal ingenuity and skill to craft a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution criminalizingcriminalizng political abuse and corruption that Constitutional scholars across the country are heralding as a highly plausible answer to the political chaos destroying the very moral fiber of the country today. It’s difficult to read THE AMENDMENT KILLER and not imagine what could—and should—be expected and demanded of those political leaders who have forgotten they are there to serve and not be served.
Barak is also a committed and strident advocate of finding a cure for diabetes. One of the primary characters in THE AMENDMENT KILLER is the feisty and precocious 11-year-old diabetic granddaughter of the Supreme Court justice holding the swing vote in a case in which Congress is challenging the validity of Barak’s hypothetical 28th Amendment. It is no small coincidence that Barak is himself a diabetic. Or that he has committed 50% of the net proceeds of THE AMENDMENT KILLER to diabetes research and education.
Barak is singularly qualified to have authored THE AMENDMENT KILLER, which will appeal to political and legal thriller aficionados alike. Barak is a law school honors graduate and a former Olympic athlete. While still in law school, he authored a bill introduced in Congress that overnight forced the settlement of a decades long dispute between the NCAA and the AAU to control amateur athletics in the United States.
Present-day politicians would do well to read THE AMENDMENT KILLER and not underestimate the potential of Barak’s 28th Amendment. You can read his 28th Amendment at ronaldsbarak.com/28th-amendment-page-2. You can also read his occasional political blogs at ronaldsbarak.com/blog.
Ron and his wife, Barbie, and the four-legged members of their family reside in Pacific Palisades, California.
