Amber Steakhouse
Amber Steakhouse overall score: 83 I had heard good things about this place from a few different people recently, so I had to go give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised! First, watch my Ride & Review on YouTube below. Then read on! Flavor: 8 We had the bone-in dry-aged rib eye, and the dry-aged t-bone. Both had a really nice char on the outside from the broiler, and both were just slightly…

Male Gnoll/Female Reader SFW Wordcount: 3,343 Commissions | Ko-fi | Masterlist
Ruhui owns a steakhouse across the road from your new cafe. You’ve been pining over him for months, not knowing if he’s into humans at all.
Tumblr media
Your heart raced with excitement as you unlocked the door to your new cafe It was the culmination of years of dreaming and months of hard work. The aroma of fresh coffee and pastries filled the air, a welcoming scent that you hoped would entice passersby. As you flipped the sign to open, your stomach fluttered with a mix of nerves and anticipation.
The first few customers trickled in, offering smiles and congratulations. You felt a surge of pride with each new face that appeared at the door. Your cafe, with its cosy armchairs and warm lighting, was exactly how you had envisioned it – a haven for those seeking comfort and a good cup of coffee.
Mid-morning, a sleek black cat sauntered in, its green eyes scanning the room before settling comfortably in a sunny spot by the window. Your heart skipped a beat, the old superstition about black cats and bad luck briefly crossing your mind.
A tall orc with a friendly smile noticed your gaze on the cat. "Ah, a black cat! That's a sign of good luck in orcish culture, you know," he said with a chuckle.
You raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at your lips. "Funny, for us it’s often seen as the exact opposite."
The orc laughed, a deep, rumbling sound that filled the cafe. "Well, I say take the orcish perspective on this one. Looks like good fortune is on your side."
The morning passed in a blur of activity after that. You poured coffees, served pastries, and chatted with customers, the hum of conversation a pleasant and constant undercurrent as you worked. Yet, despite the busyness, your attention kept drifting to the steakhouse across the street.
You had noticed him a few times before, the gnoll who worked there. His tall, imposing figure was hard to miss, as you watched him linger outside with a cigarette. His coarse fur was a rich brown, and he had broad shoulders that strained the think fabric of his uniform shirt.
It wasn’t until three o’clock, however, that there was a lull long enough for you to take a break. With a smile towards Jessica, your sole employee, you stepped outside for air.
There he was again, standing with a cigarette clasped between thick, sharp claws. You offered a wave, but the gnoll only gave a curt nod before slipping back inside.
Well. So much for making friends, then.
Summoning your courage, you decided to introduce yourself anyway. If nothing else, perhaps you could grab a quick lunch and say hello to the steakhouse owner.
The steakhouse was busy, the scent of grilled meat wafting out as you opened the door. You spotted him almost immediately, the gnoll, busily moving between tables.
Approaching the front desk, you were surprised to see the gnoll was the host for today. You felt a knot of nervousness in your stomach as you waved.
"Hi, I'm the owner of the cafe across the street," you began, extending a hand. "The Honeypot. Maybe you’ve seen it? Just wanted to introduce myself." You offered your name, too.
He looked at you, his amber eyes assessing. "Ruhui," he said simply, shaking your hand briefly before turning his attention back to the tables.
“Is the owner or manager around?”
“I’m the manager on shift. The owner only comes in on weekends.”
You shuffled awkwardly. “Right, thank you. I suppose I’ll see you around then?”
“Suppose you will.”
The interaction was brief, polite but lacking warmth. You couldn't shake off the feeling that your human heritage was a barrier he wasn't willing to cross. Gnolls were known for not being exactly… friendly outside of their small social circles.
Disappointed but not deterred, you returned to Jessica and the Honeypot, the black cat still lounging in the sunbeam by the window.
As you stepped back into the warm embrace of your café, the comforting scent of coffee greeted you like an old friend.
Jessica looked up from the espresso machine. "How did it go with the neighbours?" she asked, a playful curiosity in her eyes.
You shrugged, trying to mask your disappointment. "It was alright, but the host wasn't exactly the friendliest."
Jessica wiped her hands on her apron, a knowing smile on her face. "He's probably just busy, you know. Now’s about the time people are coming in for early dinner. Maybe he's not great at first impressions."
You considered this, glancing out the window at the steakhouse. "We should go there for lunch one day, get a feel for the place... and the staff," you suggested, your eyes involuntarily flicking back to where Ruhui had been.
Jessica laughed, leaning against the counter. "Is this a business strategy or are you just curious about the mysterious gnoll?" she teased.
You felt your cheeks warm slightly. "Purely professional interest," you quipped, though your heart betrayed your words.
"Of course, purely professional," Jessica echoed, her tone dripping with mock seriousness. "Should I start looking up how to communicate with gruff gnolls for our team training?"
You joined in the laughter, the sound filling the cafe. "That might not be the worst idea," you said, the corners of your eyes crinkling with amusement.
The rest of the day passed with the comfortable routine of café life. As you served customers and shared jokes, the earlier encounter with Ruhui retreated to the back of your mind, though not completely out of your thoughts.
Closing time came, and as you and Jessica tidied up, the ease of your friendship made the tasks feel less like work and more like a shared hobby.
"So, when are we planning this espionage lunch?" Jessica asked, stacking chairs.
"Let's give it a week. Don’t want to make it too obvious," you replied, a playful edge to your voice.
Jessica nodded, playing along. "A strategic move, boss. I like it."
As you locked up the cafe, you looked across the street at the bustling steakhouse. Just as you were locking up, they were only starting to get genuinely busy.
You hoped for a glimpse of Ruhui as you walked by, but he was nowhere to be seen.
***
Several days passed, the rhythm of the café becoming second nature to you. The black cat had become a regular, much to the delight of your customers. The buzz of conversation, the clink of cups became so familiar that you almost felt lost without it.
On Thursday, as you stepped outside to clear your head and stretch your legs, you spotted Ruhui across the street. He was leaning against the wall of the steakhouse, a lit cigarette dangling from his fingers. The smoke curled upwards, dissipating into the cool air.
You hesitated for a moment, then, driven by a curiosity you couldn’t quite suppress, you crossed the street. As you approached, Ruhui’s amber eyes flicked towards you, a hint of surprise crossing his otherwise impassive features.
"Hi, Ruhui, right?" you said, trying to sound casual.
He nodded, taking a slow drag from his cigarette. "Yes; and you own the Honeypot?"
His voice was deep, with a rough edge that made your stomach warm pleasantly. Youwere surprised that he remembered you.
"That's right," you replied, shuffling your feet slightly. "I hope I'm not disturbing your break."
Ruhui shook his head, a small gesture that seemed to convey more than words could. "It's fine," he said, his gaze returning to the street.
You searched for something to say, a way to extend the conversation. "I've noticed your steakhouse is always busy. Business must be doing well."
"It is," he replied simply, his eyes meeting yours for a moment before looking away.
There was something about his quiet, reserved nature that intrigued you. It was as if there was something more to him that he kept hidden, a story behind those guarded eyes.
"Well, I won't keep you," you said, feeling the conversation reaching its natural end. "See you around."
"Sure," Ruhui said, a noncommittal response that somehow didn't feel dismissive.
As you walked back to the café, his image lingered in your mind. Ruhui was an enigma, a mystery wrapped in a quiet, unassuming package.
Inside, the afternoon light streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow over the room. As you began to tend to the remaining customers and clean up the counters, your mind kept drifting back to the brief interaction with Ruhui.
Just as you were wiping down a table near the window, you glanced across the street and caught Ruhui's figure through the steakhouse's window. He seemed to be watching you, his expression unreadable. As soon as your eyes met, he quickly turned away, resuming his work as if he had never been looking in the first place.
A small smile played on your lips. Was it possible that Ruhui was just as intrigued by you as you were by him? The thought made you laugh to yourself, despite the flutter in your chest.
The rest of the day passed with your thoughts occupied by Ruhui. Every so often, you found yourself stealing glances across the street, half-expecting to catch him looking your way again. If he did steal any more glances, he was careful not to be caught.
***
As the week progressed, the idea of visiting the steakhouse crystalliszed into a plan. Finally, on a quiet Tuesday evening as you were closing up the café with Jessica, you broached the subject.
"Jessica, how about we grab dinner at the steakhouse tonight?" you suggested, wiping down the last table. "We’ve been talking about it for ages, and I finally have a free evening."
Jessica raised an eyebrow, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. "Is this for the food, or the gnoll waiter?" she teased, stacking chairs.
You rolled your eyes, though you couldn't suppress a smile. "Jessica..."
"Sure, sure," Jessica chuckled, following you to the door. "Let's go, then."
With the café locked up, the two of you made your way across the street to the steakhouse. The warm glow from its windows promised a bustling atmosphere. A small flutter of anticipation tickled your stomach as you pushed open the door.
The steakhouse was lively, filled with the sounds of clinking cutlery, sizzling grills, and animated conversations. The hostess led you to a table, handing you menus with a smile. As you scanned the room, you couldn't help but search for Ruhui.
To your surprise, it was Ruhui himself who approached your table, notepad in hand. The look of surprise on his face was brief but noticeable.
"Good evening," he said, regaining his composure. "I'll be your waiter tonight. Can I start you off with some drinks?"
Jessica winked at you subtly across the table, a barely suppressed grin on her face.
"Just water for now, thanks," you said, trying to sound as casual as possible. "We're still looking over the menu."
Ruhui nodded, jotting down your request. "I'll be right back with your waters. Take your time."
As he walked away, Jessica leaned in. "Well, this is an interesting development," she whispered. "He looked genuinely surprised to see us."
You nodded, your eyes following Ruhui as he moved through the restaurant with an effortless grace. "Maybe I’m not as predictable as he thought."
With a smile, you turned your attention to the menu. The array of choices was impressive. It seemed to cater to all kinds of people, from humans and orcs, gnolls to fae elves.
Jessica, ever the one for simplicity, opted for a classic steak and salad combo. Your eyes, however, were drawn to a more exotic option.
"What about the fireheart steak you mused aloud. It was orcish, known for its intense spiciness and bold flavors – a choice not commonly favored by humans.
Jessica raised her eyebrows. "Going for the adventurous choice, I see."
You smiled, feeling a sense of daring. "Why not? It's good to try new things."
When Ruhui returned to take your order, his expression was one of polite professionalism. That is until you ordered the fireheart steak. His eyebrow quirked up, a glimmer of surprise in his eyes.
"That comes with an incredibly spicy sauce," he said, a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Not many choose it."
You met his gaze, a playful challenge in your eyes. "I like a bit of spice. Keeps things interesting."
For a moment, there was a flicker of something akin to amusement in Ruhui's expression. "Well, consider yourself warned. It's not for the faint of heart."
The exchange felt almost like flirting, and you suppressed a delighted shiver. As Ruhui walked away to place your orders, you couldn't help the smug feeling that crept up. It seemed you had managed to pique his interest, even if just a little.
When the meal arrived, the intensity of the spices hit you immediately. The heat was powerful, but it was also citrusy and rich. You couldn't help but savor each bite, the spices making your face flush.
Jessica watched with a mix of amusement and awe. "I'm impressed," she said, taking a more cautious bite of her steak. "I didn't expect you to handle it so well."
You grinned, feeling a bead of sweat form at your temple. "I may have met my match, but I'm not backing down. This is delicious."
Across the room, you noticed Ruhui stealing glances in your direction, an unspoken question in his eyes. It was as if he was waiting for you to reach for the water, to admit defeat against the dish's fiery nature.
You didn't. Instead, you continued to enjoy the meal, the spice a welcome challenge. With each bite, you felt a sense of pride.
When it came time for dessert, Ruhui approached with a hint of curiosity in his stance. "How was the dish? Not too overwhelming, I hope?"
"Not at all," you replied, your voice steady despite the lingering heat. "It was fantastic. I'll definitely have it again."
A flicker of respect – and was it admiration? – passed through Ruhui's eyes. "I'm impressed. Not many can handle our spicy stuff. You're full of surprises."
The tone of his voice had changed, lighter, almost playful. It was as if your tolerance for the dish had shifted his perception of you, or perhaps broken down a barrier he had erected.
Jessica, picking up on the change, chimed in, "We'd love to try some dessert. What would you recommend?"
Ruhui's suggestion was thoughtful, and he described the desserts with an enthusiasm that seemed new. You chose a fudge brownie at his recommendation, a decision that seemed to please him.
As he walked away to place your dessert order, Jessica leaned in, a sly smile on her face. "Seems like you're not the only one full of surprises. Ruhui might have a softer side after all."
You chuckled, the warmth of the meal and the interaction leaving you in high spirits. "Maybe. He's definitely more than meets the eye."
The dessert was a perfect end to the meal – sweet, indulgent, and beautifully presented. As you savored each bite, you couldn't help but feel that the evening had been a success on more than one front. Not only had you enjoyed a fantastic meal, but it seemed that Ruhui was even managing to open up to you.
The thought made your stomach flutter, and it didn’t go unnoticed. Jessica grinned at you from across the table.
“You should ask him out,” Jessica informed you. “Leave your number or something when we pay.”
You rose a brow. “Do you think that’ll work. Isn’t that like workplace harassment?”
Jessica’s laughter was soft, muffled by her hand. “Oh come on, it doesn’t hurt to try. Worst case scenario, he ignores you and you go back to staring wistfully every time you see him.”
True. Fine, you were sold. You scribbled your number on a piece of paper, your heart racing the entire time. Just as you were about to discreetly leave it on the table, a different waiter approached with the bill.
"Here's your bill," he said cheerfully. "Ruhui had to take his break, so I'm covering his tables for a bit."
You nodded, a hint of disappointment washing over you. As you reached for the bill, the piece of paper with your number lay conspicuously on the table. The waiter's eyes flicked to it, and a knowing smile crossed his face.
"Is that for Ruhui?" he asked, a playful tone in his voice.
You felt your cheeks warm with embarrassment, but before you could reply, the waiter continued, "If it is, you might not want to bother. Ruhui isn't really into humans. No offense."
The way he said it, so matter-of-factly, stung more than you expected. It wasn't just the words, but the dismissive tone, the insinuation that your interest was somehow misplaced or unwelcome.
Jessica, who had been watching the exchange, frowned. "That's a bit rude, isn't it?" she said, her voice sharp. "It's not your place to comment on someone's preferences like that."
The waiter seemed taken aback by Jessica's response. "I didn't mean any offense. Just, you know, saving you some embarrassment."
You quickly paid the bill, your earlier excitement now replaced with a mix of frustration and embarrassment. The waiter's words echoed in your mind. Was he right? Was your interest in Ruhui misguided?
As you stepped outside of the steakhouse, the cool night air did little to soothe the sting of the waiter's words. Jessica stayed close, her support a small comfort.
Just as you were about to cross the street back to your café, you noticed Ruhui in his usual spot, taking a smoke break. Your first instinct was to avoid him, but as you passed by, he called out.
"Hey, wait a minute," Ruhui said, his tone holding a note of confusion.
You hesitated, then stopped, gut twisting. Jessica stood beside you, her presence a silent show of solidarity.
Ruhui approached, flicking away his cigarette. "Is everything alright? You seem upset."
Your thoughts raced. Part of you wanted to dismiss him, to walk away, but the other part wanted to confront the situation. "Fine, at least now I know not to waste my time. Or yours." The words came out in a rush, tinged with hurt and embarrassment.
Ruhui's expression changed to one of annoyance, then understanding. He let out a short laugh, not of amusement but of disbelief. "Colleague… you mean Turner? He's an asshole. Don't listen to him. He enjoys stirring up trouble."
You were taken aback by his response, the bluntness of his words unexpected. "So, it's not true?" you asked, a glimmer of hope rekindling in your chest.
“What’s not true?”
“That you’ve no interest in humans.”
Ruhui snorted. "No, it's not. I don't know where he gets these ideas. Wait, why?"
You shifted from one foot to the other, and your lips pursed. “No reason.”
There was a pause, a moment of hesitation before realisation seemed to dawn on his face. “Oh, I get it. I’ve got to admit, I’m surprised. I've been... intrigued by you, too."
His admission caught you off guard. The doubts and hurt from moments ago began to dissipate, replaced by a sense of relief.
"Really?" you asked, a cautious optimism in your voice.
Ruhui nodded, a rare vulnerability in his eyes. "Yeah. I noticed you the day your café opened. You've got something... different about you."
Jessica nudged you gently, a silent encouragement to seize the moment. You took a deep breath, gathering your courage. "I thought there was something different about you too. That's why I... why I wanted to leave my number."
Ruhui's lips curved into a small smile, an action that transformed his usually stoic face. His muzzle twitched adorably. "I wish you had. I would have called."
The night suddenly felt warmer, the earlier embarrassment fading into insignificance.
"Well, it's not too late," you said, a newfound boldness in your tone. "How about we start over? Maybe grab a coffee together at the Honeypot?"
"I'd like that," Ruhui replied, his smile widening.

Abbott 2.14 Thoughts:
Finally have time to watch the new ep!! The conference has been great so far, but I’m glad I can just decompress for the rest of the evening.
“Don’t listen to what the eighth graders say about the way you dress. You are making a fashion statement.” AKDNSNS, I love the way that Jacob is always there for Janine. Their friendship has subtly but so genuinely evolved from from S1 to now.
JANINE’S SISTER!!!!!! AW, Ayesha is so cute. Oh, my God, Janine’s very erroneous and self-revealing side-comments about her. (Girl, I want to study you under a microscope.)
Jacob explaining his and Zach’s happiness and LISA clearly breaking.
The idea of Mel taking herself out to a steakhouse all alone. Oh, my God.
Barb and Ger!!!! I think it’s very charming that they’ve both been too preoccupied to really plan anything? That’s the sort of detail that feels true to some long-established couples?? My parents, who are in their seventies, don’t really plan anything either. They just sort of remember it’s Valentine’s Day and then go grab a steak, lol.
QKQJSNSSN, BARBARA ASKING ABOUT AMBER LIKE THAT. I love when the work wives are work moms.
Melissa having her glasses in her mouth for the rest of that scene.
“He looks like men do before they have kids.” OOQJWNWJDDJAJISDJS.
“… because if you think about it, underpaying a white teacher to teach Black history is almost reparation.” GHEEJDID. They give Ava the goddamn best one-liners.
Donnie: “I need a woman.” THAT KID’S LOOK AT THE CAMERA WIWNDNE.
Ava looking invested/putting down her phone as she listens to Jacob… 🥺
Barb being so excited about the airplane date is very cute. Also, Cibo Bistro is an Italian place, so that’s a tiny Work Wives win if you really think about it and put ur clown nose on.
Mel’s mind jumping straight to cheating. God. That’s the suspicion of someone who has been cheated on before and utterly hurt by it.
WAH, BARB NOT KNOWING SHE HAS TO BUY A PLANE TICKET. SEA BARBARA!! CRUISES ONLY.
Janine going to Mel for advice. 😭 I love work mom moments.
“That’s puppy love, Dolittle. It’ll pass.” This is a very cute line, but if I really wanted to, I could write the angstiest gd fic about “It’ll pass.” <3 *Twirls hair. owo*
JACOB SPILLING THE SECRET EEJFNEN. Janine’s expression as she digests this information—dear god, the utter vulnerability and confusion of it.
“Only a handful of them do. Say, like, 30% to 60%.” ajwjweAhqsjs.
Ava still observing Jacob. LISTEN, pls tell me the plot line is that she’s actually enjoying learning. I will start sobbing.
“Like an anti-racist Icarus.” QIQJWNSENS.
QNWSNSN, EVERYONE IN THE TEACHER’S LOUNGE KNOWING ABOUT GREGORY.
“Although I think that workplace romances are a terrible idea” and Melissa nodding in agreement. I could also write terribly angsty fanfic abou—
Barb: “But you do like him, right?” Everyone being a Teddie shipper is so good and so right.
“Sweetheart, it is possible to like two people at the same time.” ON GOD, DID THAT JUST COME OUT OF BARBARA HOWARD’S MOUTH?!!
Janine tenderly and sadly imagining domestic intimacy with Gregory. I want to cry.
ZACH!! I love his fit. I love a good bomber jacket.
“Sounds like you’re actually enjoying learning.” YESSSSSSSSSSSS.
“I will kick your Jacob-loving Saint Valentine ass right out of this school.” AAkqjwwidj
“I never liked school. It got in the way of college.” QOQKQNS.
“No offense.” / “None taken.” Goddamn, this show is so funny.
I love that Ava is sharing this vulnerable moment with Zach, tho, and I love the fact that he immediately is able to intuit what the difference is. Ava has grown and matured since her younger days, and she’s continuing this journey every day. The same principal who misappropriated school funds to buy a sign of herself isn’t the one who’s sitting across Zach admitting to being invested in learning about Black history.
Janine thinking Gregory is talking about them. 😭😭😭 GOD.
LEGO flowers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Right pairing, wrong timing ships always get to me. Jesus.
“Well, people can like more than one person.” I love that this is the second time this has been said in the episode. The Abbott writers know relationships and people are messy and complicated. It’s never about neatly partitioned feelings when you really love someone.
AVA MAKING THEM TURN AROUND. AVA GOING BACK TO SCHOOL. SOBBBBBBINN G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM SOBBINNG!
Ava standing up for Jacob!!!!!!!! I fucking love that!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m very not fashion-aware because I had to go look up the value of a Telfar bag ANSDNS.
JANINE NOT KNOWING EITHER WIWNDSNNW. Solidarity. I love you, ma’am.
LMAO, Mo and Amber are gonna end up together.
Not Gregory looking baaaaack.
BARBARA INVITINT MEL TO THE AIRPORT DATE. THIS IS ALL I’VE EVER WANTED.
“Oh, we don’t mind.” THIS IS MY WIFE, BARBARA, AND THIS IS MY WIFE’S WIFE MELISSA.
Barbara so tenderly worrying about Melissa, and Melissa gently shrugging the effort off because she wants Barbara to have a nice night. I love this ship that we have all collectively made up in our heads. <33
WRAP IT UP, FOLKS. WE GOT AN I LOVE YOU AND AN I LOVE YOU TOO, BARB. THAT’S ALL I NEED TO BE HAPPY AND CONTENT WITH MY LIFE. OH, MY GOD. MELISSA SAID IT SO CASUALLY.
And then the episode ended. <3 The end.

Gemstones Episode 3.3: Baby Billy sings forever, Kelvin can't say the Word, BJ poses nude, and I'm depressed
Tumblr media
The Greek Chorus: The white-haired, grinning Baby Billy, dressed like a clam, sings"There will Come a Payday," while walking through the Gemstone resort, Zion's Landing.  He sings incessantly in a swimming pool area with absolutely no beefcake, while viewers grate their teeth and snarl "Get the f*k on with it."  Yes, we know he's a Greek Chorus, singing about the "payday" coming to the Gemstones.  We don't need ten minutes of it, in a show that is already squeezing in too many plotlines.
Finally, long after we put on the mute,  Baby Billy returns to his penthouse, where his very pregnant wife Tiffany and their three-year old son Lionel are watching the old game show Family Feud.  The Baby Billy/Tiffany plotline this season will be about trying to get the Gemstones to invest in a Christian-based Family Feud show, Baby Billy's Bible Bonkers.
Timeline problem: Tiffany had her first baby in the last episode of Season 2.  Now he's at least three years old.  But three years have not passed in the Gemstone universe.
"We don't like you":  The Montgomery Boys (Robert Oberst, top photo, Lukas Haas) in bathrobes in Eli's house, eating breakfast, discussing Peter's militia with Eli, May-May, and the siblings:
Peter thinks that his sons and Gemstones tipped off the feds, so now he's gunning for all of them.  May-May wants the boys to come home with her, but they refuse: "We'd rather be homeless bums living under a bridge."  Or living in a mansion with a staff of 17?
Afterwards, the siblings go down to the Aimee-Leigh memorial, discuss how much they hate their cousins, and give them the finger as they peer through an upstairs window.  Eli insists that they have a Cousin's Night and try to get along.
The Redeemer: Amber brings a copy of her marital-problem System to BJ, who claims to be unaware of any problems between him and Judy.  Does everyone in the church know that Judy has been withholding sex? Or did Jesse tell Amber about the affair?
A Complete Lack of Knowing How to Fit into the World: Kelvin and the teens are making anti-smut posters in the parking garage outside the Salvation Center Stage, for some reason, when Keefe drives up in the Smut Busters van.  Kelvin flitters over, laying on the femme stereotypes, and says "Hey, Bud."  Keefe calls him "Bro."  This must be facade language: they are pretending to be buddies and co-pastors in front of the kids.
Keefe drove to an adult store and bought out their inventory of sex toys. "You've been having all the fun lately!" Kelvin exclaims, wishing that he could have been there to help pick out the toys  He does his usual titty-tweak display of affection, then reveals that his Daddy is forcing him to go to Cousins' Night with the Montgomerys.  They have "a complete lack of knowing how to fit into the world around them."
Sounds exactly like Keefe!  He tries to guilt his way into an invitation.

Tumblr media
Wouldn't he be invited automatically?  He was admitted to the family as Kelvin's partner back in Season 2.  But maybe, to stay closeted, Kelvin only brings him to events where a lot of people are invited, like the dinners at Jason's Steakhouse and the Zion's Landing ground-breaking.  This is a family-only event, and not even the entire family.  It's limited to Montgomery cousins by blood or marriage.  If Kelvin brings Keefe, no one will be able to pretend that they are just coworkers or platonic pals.
Keefe's bribes are: his special sausage dip and his "flames and swords."  The dip is served with crackers on a phallic dish.  Everything these guys do involves dicks. It is amazing that some fans, actually quite a lot, were still arguing that Kelvin and Keefe were straight after this episode.
Let's look more closely at the "flames and swords."   Kelvin knows exactly what Keefe is talking about: he doesn't have to say "Remember that fire dance I performed that one time?"  He must perform it regularly, but you wouldn't do it for just one person, and the family has never seen it.  We can conclude that the guys are involved in the local gay community, attending gay events with sausage dip and Keefe's "flames and swords"
The Best Dude Friend of a Cousin Kerfluffle:  Kelvin is happy to invite him, but that's not enough. Keefe pushes him to name their relationship: "I ain't a cousin, though."  An odd way to put it; he means "not the Montgomerys' cousin."
"I know you're not a cousin," Kelvin responds.  "You're my b...best...dude...friend of a cousin."  He was starting to say "boyfriend," but couldn't say it, then tried "best friend," but couldn't say that either, since it is obviously not true. Why can't he say "boyfriend"?  Because they are in public with the teens nearby, or because he won't admit it to himself?
Notice the profound sadness in Kelvin's eyes.  He is in pain.  He is desperate to Say the Word, but he can't.  Why not?
I see someone who has been closeted for so long that he must remain closeted, even in private.  Despite their forays into the local gay community, despire their wedding rings, despire sharing a house, a bed, and some "good buddy" sexual activity, he cannot admit that Keefe is his lover. Remember Leonard Bernstein's Mass:
What  I say, I don't feel.
What I feel, I can't show.
What I show, isn't real.
What is real?  Oh Lord, I don't know.
BJ and Judy are having problems of their own:   BJ is watching the instructional video for Amber's System. Now we see how it works: when you are tempted to say or do something wrong, you drop a blue or pink gemstone into the jar, and your spouse doesn't get hurt. But they'll know how often you've been thinking about it.   Judy enters and becomes irate over the implication that they need marital counseling.
We cut to the women's group, where Amber is quoting one of the main same-sex couples in the Bible, Ruth and Naomi: "Where you go, I will go. and where you stay,  I will stay.  You're people will be my people, and your God my God."  Then she asks the women to think about "the commitment we have made to the people we love," implicitly validating same-sex marriages.
Judy bursts in and throws the System carton at her.  But they need the System, Amber insists, because "the decline is real," people aren't showing up, and the scandal of marital infidelity could destroy the church altogether. What about the scandal of a gay youth minister living openly with his boyfriend in the Gemstone compound?
Next, the siblings, in their throne room...um, executive board room, reject Baby Billy's pitch for the Bible Bonkers game show.
Timeline Problem: In Episode 3.2, the board room is still under construction, with Percy making rough sketches, on the same day the Montgomerys flee the militia.  Cousins' Night has to be just a few days later.  Percy works very fast!
The Night, and a lot of vulnerability, next.
The full review, with nude photos and explicit sexual discussions, is on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends

Lilly was excessively flirty at lunch. She kept asking Hank all these questions about life back in Indiana. Like if he was the most popular boy in his school, and all. Which of course he said he was—though I personally don’t believe being the most popular boy at Versailles (which in Indiana-speak is pronounced Ver-Sales, by the way) High School is such a big accomplishment.
Then she was all, “Do you have a girlfriend?”
Hank got bashful and said that he used to, only “Amber” had ditched him a couple weeks ago for a guy whose father owns the local Outback Steakhouse. Lilly acted all shocked, and said Amber must be suffering from a borderline personality disorder if she couldn’t see what a fully self-actualized individual Hank was.
I was so revolted by this display, I could hardly keep my veggie burger down.
Then Lilly started talking about all the fabulous things there are to do in the city, and how Hank really ought to take advantage of them, rather than hanging around here at school with me. She said, “For instance, there’s the Transit Museum, which is fascinating.”
Seriously. She actually said the Transit Museum was fascinating. Lilly Moscovitz.
I swear, hormones are way dangerous.

It is a malt liquor that's why it tastes so rich and the alcohol content is very high and it's 40 proof that's part of the reason most hard liquor is 70 or 80 but really it is because it's in solution it's like wine wine will make you drunk real fast but it's not really drank to be drunk it's a great healthier beer it's very rich and hops and barley and it is part of a diet actually for specific regions where you can't have many liquids we get fungus. And barley is a natural fungus fighter.
And this is the size we'd like to send to rays complimentary. And it's kind of just for the heck of it and to see what will go on cuz people little strange and I guess you can sell it if he wants to and suggested presentation is in the ice we even have a barrel and he said pay me to put it there and he said okay so we hear the rate I think it's a bit much so we agree on something. And we promise a truck load and will deliver what he can handle and we'll deliver it to the truckload is up and we know how much it is of course it says that's great it's so many cases and he agrees and it's going on now
Cuz you have to look and see if it's ever going to happen there no approaching other stores and ABC liquor says no that we haven't gone there in person he wants to be the salesperson everybody knows what it is that's what it says you have to market it and he says you put it at like steakhouses and places like that that are kind of Bavarian in their food they serve and German and Norwegian and European and so rich dark Amber and it tastes like a light Amber but tastier it's like Miller lite but has a more full taste to it same type of head and it tickles and everything its nice. We are getting offers we got a call from Walmart and not this Walmart here but headquarters they want to test it was their beers aren't selling and we have beers and they said they should put the price down to close the suggested retail and we said the reason this beer would sell it's known to be healthier and part of a meal it has a lot of calories and it's barley and hops and the Bali is known for several things and the hops are known for helping with other stuff and really hops help with the fungus barley helps with your liver so the getting more calls but Walmart is a huge one and they're trying to stop people from bothering Walmart while on the line we might mention our chocolate their friend famous Brand it's not a huge company anymore and we're going to reintroduce it to them so we're going to do it now the small ones only my son mentioned something funny it's like cheap hard liquor and you can go to Walmart and you don't have to go to the liquor store Walmart says don't mention it and he says it's going to help it get it there it's a risk but not a huge one cuz it's still a beer but there's a lot of consumers who like beer and will help other beer sales but it's a way around the go to the liquor store too thing and it's not as potent as liquor and doesn't have side effects that most liquors do and it's true as heck too he says that's great so you're going to put it in I'm going to show you the chocolate
Thor Freya
We're building this dream too I want to show the chocolate I think it should be a woman thing so they're going to have me do it Freya is going to be alone of course

Satoru was afraid of making a move, least he tipped you over the edge and made you bolt; he didn’t want that. Swallowing hard he looked into your eyes… God… he had missed your beautiful E/C eyes so much. Waking up every morning without you by his side, without you kissing him awake cause he was going to be late for work… again. Your absence had left a literal infinite void in his heart that he was unable to fill.
“I know I don’t deserve anything from you Y/N, but I love you and I cannot give up on us… We said forever when we got married. And I want that… with you” speaking from the heart was not something Satoru ever did. He always preferred to cover any emotions with inappropriate jokes and double entendres. But he knew he couldn’t play his stupid games, not with you and most certainly not now.
You pulled away in that moment, as if his touch was burning you. He allowed it, doing his utmost effort not to pull you back in. His hands itched resting at his sides, missing the warmth of your body.
|||
It was you and me, it seemed to last forever
The way you taste and I still remember… the sounds we made.
|||
“It would have been nice if you felt that way before you decided to ruin this marriage. Where were those promises of forever when you fucked someone else?” You asked piercing his eyes with yours. He cowered under your glare. Satoru had never been on the receiving end of your wrath and now he understood why most people chose (wisely) to not mess with you. Every single one of your words was chosen carefully to cause the most damage. At the same time… what hurt the most was that you were right.
“Leave and don’t ever come back… you and I… are through…” Satoru noticed how you avoided calling him by his name, he hated it. As if uttering his name would leave a bad taste in your mouth “Y/N…” he whispered pleadingly when you took another step away. But this time he didn’t have the courage to stop you as you disappeared inside your apartment and locked the door behind you.
|||
I bet you wish you had me back! Another chance to gain it, just like that. The best you ever had.
|||
Satoru was fucked.
—————
The next morning Suguru’s plane landed. JFK international airport was as busy and chaotic as one would expect. After collecting his luggage he made his way to a cab giving the driver your current address.
He hadn’t been able to sleep a wink during the trip, his mind swarmed with all the possibilities of what could be happening right now. Satoru didn’t play fair and of course… you loved (probably still love) the lucky bastard.
With a sigh he decided to focus instead on the city going by through the cab’s windows. It wasn’t the first time he was in New York and his mind was much more occupied torturing him instead of appreciating the landscape.
After 40 minutes, Geto stood before a very nice and modern building located in the upper east side called Hawthorn Park. You sure knew how to live in luxury. He approached the doorman and let him know his name and that he was here to see Miss Ekaterina Petrova to which the kind looking old man responded by using his intercom to contact you. Geto was soon granted access and guided to the elevator.
The elevator doors opened on the 21st floor, he walked to the door of your apartment which was already open and you were waiting for him. His smile fell once he noticed you have been crying “oh Kitten” dropping his luggage on the spot he surrounded your body in his arms “I’m so sorry…” one didn’t need to be a genius to know Satoru had found you.
You both moved inside your apartment. Settling on the spacious couch you buried your face on Suguru’s lap as you cried. He stroked your now darker strands of h/c hair without a word exchanged. He knew you needed to let it all out. After what seemed an eternity you sat back up. Suguru gently dried your eyes.
“He was here last night…” you whispered in a raw and scratchy voice, result of your endless hours of distress before his arrival “he told me he loved me, that he left Sookie” scoff “and hear this… he left her because the baby wasn’t his!” Talk about karma at its best. Suguru already knew that but he was surprised to hear Satoru had come clean about it to you “He probably thought I would fall for that! But I didn’t” you added firmly.
Suguru was proud of you. He knew how hard it was for you to resist Satoru but you stood tall and proud when it mattered the most. “What do you want to do now?” Where you planning on moving again?
-
“I’m not leaving…” you said looking into Suguru’s liquid amber gaze. You couldn’t help but notice once again he had such pretty eyes, like a cat. You’ve always liked them, specially when they looked at you with such tenderness. You have missed him dearly during all this time.
“I can’t keep running away from him; I mean… it’s obvious he won’t stop and I… I am tired of molding my life to adapt to his whims. I’m staying here whatever happens. Sugu… I got the part for the Swan Lake!” You added remembering you haven’t talked to him during the last week and so he didn’t know about your latest accomplishment.
Geto’s eyes enlarged before a huge smile split his handsome face and his massive frame engulfed you in a tight hug. Of course he knew everything about ballet, he was your best friend after all. This was huge! Probably as big as making it in the ballet world meant “I’m so proud of you Kitten!” He said excitedly kissing your temple. Maybe not everything was as bad as he thought.
You were upset, it was true. But then again you were not prepared last night. Satoru had taken you by surprise. Now… you knew he was here and more or less knew what to expect from your soon to be ex-husband.
“Thank you Sugu…” you stopped and pulled back just slightly to look into his eyes from your height. He was a very tall man compared to you “I missed you” you said with a bright smile to which Geto replied with one of his own before pulling you in again for another hug “I missed you too Kitten” stroking your back softly Suguru decided he was happy to be here… with you.

She's given up, been holding on for way too long
She's had enough
He's coming home again
But it's too late 'cause she won't stay with him
|||
The sunshine hitting his face was what woke him up. With a grunt Satoru rolled over on his side only to fall unceremoniously from the couch where he had passed out last night. The last thing he remembered was warping back to his hotel after you left him on the roof. The memory of you, turning your back on him and walking away squeezed his heart in a painful grasp.
Alcohol was never something he was attracted to, he liked to keep his brain constantly alert and stimulated. It served a purpose of course, it kept his infinity barrier on at all times, even when he was asleep. But last night he hit rock bottom. He didn’t care anymore…
As soon as he got back to the hotel, hopelessness made a home in his chest, sitting heavy on his heart. Walking to the fully stocked bar placed on the corner of his suite he opened a bottle of whiskey. He started slow since most everything was too bitter for his taste, so he went through the process of trying every single bottle until he found something to his liking.
Two hours and about fifteen different shots of everything he decided to settle for a bottle of Amaretto, some fancy Italian liquor made of apricot kernels. It was sweet.
Everything else after that was blur. Moving his sore body from the floor he forced himself to go to the bathroom. Maybe a hot shower would help ease his misery. Peeling off his clothes the smell of booze clinging on them made Gojo cringe. He decided to brush his teeth before showering. Looking in the mirror he couldn’t recognize the man starring back at him. He was a mess.
|||
Are we just ghosts out in the night?
Are we just waiting for a light that doesn't shine?
Are we just faking or is this real?
'Cause I don't know how to feel
Are we just ghosts now, you and I?
|||
Last night he had been so desperate, so hopeless and broken hearted. That’s when it hit him… his wife didn’t hurt him, she didn’t cheat on him (unlike himself), she didn’t do anything to him and yet he was feeling as if the world was collapsing around him. He lied, cheated and fucked up everything for them both.
Guilt…
Unadulterated, burning and suffocating guilt was consuming him. He felt bad before but it wasn’t until last night that he grasped the concept that Y/N didn’t owe him anything at all and that HE didn’t deserve it anyways.
The plan originally had been to get back in your good graces by doing penitence, submitting to your every whim and desire by becoming your devoted slave for as long as you would have it. He never even considered the possibility that his wife DID NOT WANT to forgive him in the first place.
He thought you left to give him a lesson, that you would eventually come back to him after he had a taste of what it was like to lose you.
But even after you both shared such a searing kiss, so passionate that every cell in his body was humming, aflame with desire you still managed to walk away from him as if it meant nothing to you.
What good did it do to him to be the strongest when he couldn’t even protect his wife… from himself.
After showering, changing clothes and ordering every sweet pastry and desert from the room service menu Gojo stopped to rethink his strategy.
What?…
Did you think he was going to stop there?
Absolutely no, love!
If anything, your rejection had only fueled his need to get you back.
“Time for plan B” sighing he pulled out his phone it rang a couple times before someone answered “good morning Mrs. Mazzo, this is Gojo Satoru. I’m going to need you to forward to me Miss Petrova’s rehearsal schedule…”
“This is really good!” You hummed happily after swallowing a bite of your steak. Suguru sat across from you at Keens Steakhouse, with a grin he watched as you indulged yourself in what you called your ‘cheat meal’ of the month. Being a professional ballerina was a tough and demanding commitment that controlled every aspect of your life, from how you train to what you eat. Despite it all, Geto knew you always found a happy balance that worked just fine for you.
Seeing your big smile made his heart jump in his chest, you were as beautiful and alluring as the day he met you. If only he had told you he liked you before Satoru did. This question kept him up at night, playing all sorts of scenarios in his mind. If he had taken the first step… would things have been different? Would you have ended up together? Married? Shaking his head he tried to focus on what you were actually saying. Deviating his thoughts to that kind of scenarios was dangerous. He also didn’t want to push it when he was perfectly aware you were still healing; he wasn’t a low life piece of shit to take advantage of your vulnerability.
But when you smiles at him as if he was the only thing in your world, when you held his hand across the table, playing with his finger, his throat felt dry and tight.
“What do you think Sugu?” Your curious and expecting eyes caught him like a deer in the headlights “I’m sorry Kitten, I was distracted. Could you repeat that please?” He asked with an affable smile.
You chuckled and stroke his hand softly “you look tired, did you sleep at all in the plane?” He shook his head “no, I didn’t. I never can, it’s uncomfortable” he hid on purpose the true reason why he hadn’t been able to sleep “come on Sugu! Let’s go back home! I bet you are tired” you said offering him a sweet smile.
After paying your bill you walked the few blocks back home. Suguru of course would be staying with you in the spare room of your penthouse. Holding hands while you talked to him about the activities the city had to offer, your schedule and how you intended to fit the time to do some tourism with him. “You don’t have to bother Kitten, I know you are busy enough with your job, I will be fine” he insisted.
You stopped on your tracks and stood in front of him, pouting, making him chuckle. You looked every bit the kitten he knew you to be, all bothered and moody “no! I want to spend time with you too you know! I haven’t seen you in so long! I’m not going to waste this chance!” You insisted to which Suguru threw his hands up in the air “I surrender Kitten! Do with me as you will” you giggled and then blushed. “Uh… eh… ok! I will!” He took your hand again and you both resumed your walk.
-
Satoru warped to the roof top of the building adjacent to yours, the lights were out in your apartment and he couldn’t sense your presence inside. You left? Where did you go?
Before a second though he warped inside your apartment but he saw all your stuff was still there, maybe you went out for groceries or something?
After a few minutes sitting on your couch he decided to wait for you on the street so he could see when you got home.
(Almost an hour later)
Oh… he wasn’t ready for what he saw.
“That mother fu….” Satoru grinds his teeth watching you walk down the street holding onto Suguru’s hand while talking distractedly. From his hiding spot in front of your building he closed his hands in a tight fist.
Well, this complicated things… a lot more.

Kelvin x Keefe Fic - The Righteous Gemstones
S2 Finale Coda - Read it on ao3
“You’re all wet.”
Kelvin blinked down at himself and the small droplets of water trailing in from behind him.
“Yes, Keefe. I am all wet.”
He watched as Keefe crossed their shared room, his dark eyes scanning every inch of him silently. He forced himself not to move a muscle as Keefe threw off his giant sun hat, and took several steps closer to him, close enough for his breath to tickle Kelvin’s cheek.
Their eyes met.
“Did you…go swimmin’ with your clothes on again? ‘Cause I heard that ain’t the safest and—”
“The Lissons held Daddy and the rest of us at gunpoint,” Kelvin blurted out, his breathing labored. “Made us walk into the sea ‘cause they’re snakes in the grass. Frauds, charlatans. They—they’re behind who shot at Jesse and Amber and nearly killed Daddy. Lyle did in that reporter guy too. They just wanted Gemstone money and didn’t care who they hurt to get it. They’re no-good, self-righteous—”
“You’re shakin’,” Keefe cut across Kelvin’s rant, darting into the adjoining bathroom and grabbing one of the large, fluffy white towels.
Before Kelvin could protest, he was wrapped up in it and the strong, firm grip of Keefe’s hands rubbing his shoulders, up and down, up and down.
“Are you okay?” Keefe asked in his usual gentle tone, but his eyes gave away his worry, his gaze lingering over Kelvin for any visible sign of injuries. “Are you hurt?”
Kelvin’s throat tightened. He blinked back the stinging sensation behind his eyes.
“I-I’m fine, Keefe. It…BJ got shot in the leg. Daddy’s gettin’ him and Judy airlifted to some hospital right now. Aunt Tiffany and Uncle Baby Billy are hitchin’ a ride with baby Lionel too. Joe Jonas is keepin’ the guests calm and distracted.”
Keefe nodded, taking his rasped explanation in his stride, carefully steering him backward until his knees hit the edge of one of the double beds. Slowly, he lowered him to sit, kneeling down in front of him and raising a smaller towel to his hair, running it over his soaked strands.
Kelvin sat motionless, eyes closing against the feel of his friend’s fingers detangling and drying his hair.
“They got away,” he admitted after a few beats of silence, his voice small, eyes still closed.
“They won’t get far,” Keefe assured him, still quiet but firm, “the Lord will deliver unto them their comeuppance for their wicked deeds and preying on your and your family’s kindness.”
Kelvin hoped, prayed that he was right.
“We should get you out of these wet clothes, into a hot shower, and find you something to eat. You’ve had a shock,” Keefe murmured, his breath brushing against the shell of Kevlin’s ear.
He suppressed a sudden shiver that he knew wasn’t only caused by the damp fabric sticking to his skin.
“Daddy says we should dine among the regular folk, keep smilin’, let them know everything is okay. Don’t want a panic or nothin’.”
He opened his eyes as Keefe’s hand stilled in his hair.
Their faces were a few inches apart.
Kelvin could count his eyelashes.
One. Two. Three. Four—
“I think…I think you should…dine with us back home too. Permanently.”
It was something he had been thinking about for longer than he’d ever admit. Even to himself. Just one of many other things he didn’t admit to himself.
He had first asked Keefe to accompany him to lunch the night of his successful bearing of the Cross but may have let him believe it was a special, every once in a while kinda thing. A treat to not overindulge in.
He still wasn’t sure why.
Keefe stared at him, his dark eyes warm but mouth downturned in confusion.
“You mean upstairs-church-lunch at Jason’s Steakhouse? But I thought that it was only family that—”
“You are family, Keefe,” Kelvin cut in before he could lose his nerve. “And I want—I’d like you to be by my side. Every time. If…if you’d like that too…as well.”
This was something he could admit to. Not the whole truth, but a part of it.
Their eyes locked, barely a second ticking by that somehow still felt like forever.
“I would be honored.”
Something shook loose in Kelvin’s chest at that, he letting out a relieved if a little uneven laugh.
“Okay, good. Great. I—I’ll just go take a shower and we can head down to dinner, then.”
Keefe’s lips upturned in a small but sincere smile as he nodded, beginning to stand. Kelvin’s hand shot out, fingers closing around his wrist and squeezing before he could stop himself.
He could feel Keefe’s heavy gave on him as he stared down at his newly-repaired hand, struggling to sort through his jumbled thoughts and form a coherent sentence.
He could have died today. Been shot and killed, along with his family, and Keefe would have been left behind. Safe, yes, but never knowing…never knowing how much Kelvin really—
“Save me some of that cornbread. Potato salad too. We’re not eatin’ light today.”
Fighting a wince at his cowardice, he slowly raised his gaze back up, unsurprised to see his friend, his best friend in the whole world (and something even more that he was afraid to examine too closely), already looking at him.
“Of course. I’ll grab a puddin’ cup too. Before all the chocolate ones are gone.”
Like always, Keefe seemed to know what Kelvin was saying even when he himself wasn’t completely sure.
With that, Kelvin let his wrist go and he rose slowly from his knees, pushing himself up with his palms braced against Kelvin’s thighs, their eyes never leaving one another’s.
Silence hung between them.
“Get…get some strawberry ones too. I-I know they’re your favourite,” Kelvin mumbled, feeling oddly breathless, forcing himself to stand too, his legs a little wobbly as he made his way over toward the bathroom.
“I will,” Keefe called after him. “Enjoy your shower. I’ll leave fresh clothes out on your bed.”
Kelvin nodded, keeping his back turned as he took a deep breath and stepped into the bathroom, closing the door with a snap and leaning back against it.
That warm twisting in his stomach made its familiar appearance, but like always, Kelvin shoved it down. Now was not the time. Just like all those other times weren’t either. Which, in recent months, seemed like every second of every day.
Because deep down, Kelvin knew what Keefe was to him. His number one disciple. The most impressive feather in his cap. His ultimate success story. His best friend. The man he wanted by his side at upstairs church lunch and pretty much everywhere else. His…his new kinda family that made his abdomen hot and his heart hammer in his chest.
But those weren’t thoughts for now.
Now he had to get ready and get back to his duties as a Gemstone.
But someday, maybe, it would be time.
Time for Kelvin to sort through those thoughts, those unspoken truths that he had been denying himself for a while now.
Because what Jesus the Savior once said about the truth was, well, true.
It shall set you free.

The Scents of Things
For the Slibbs Challenge! :) (If you like my stuff and want to buy me a coffee, feel free to donate! https://ko-fi.com/coolbyrne Thanks to all who have supported in the past.)
<p>As a psychologist, she knew the power of the olfactory memory, was well aware how smells played a part in memories. She only had to smell fresh garlic to be reminded of her mother's kitchen where she would roll out homemade meatballs. The smell of the ocean would forever remind her of California just as sure as diesel oil would never be associated with anything other than Afghanistan. </p>
<p>He had his own scent, too, of course. Mostly soap and wood and strong coffee, though it would be sawdust that she'd connect with him, its smell warm and pervascent and the reward for a job well done. Well, sawdust and- she looked at the small but heavy bottle in her hand and smiled. CHAZ for Men. He wasn't inclined to wear cologne except when they went out, when he was Jethro Gibbs, Husband, not Special Agent Gibbs, NCIS. When she had insisted, early on in their relationship, that he dispose of all remnants of at least the last 3 wives, a box of bottles of various emptiness was the first to hit the curb on garbage day. Which was one reason she jokingly gave him the cheapest, 'manliest' cologne she could find. And if the only thing she had gotten out of it was his laugh when he opened it on Christmas Eve, that would have been more than enough. But he did more than that- he wore the goddamn stuff. Even more surprisingly? <em>It smelled damn good on him.</em> Like his skin and his will turned the rankest, nose-wrinkling odour into something that made her want to curl up into his neck. Every damn time. </p>
<p>Tilting up the bottle, she felt a pang of impending loss. When the bottle had gotten below the half line and she realized how attached she had become to the scent, she rushed to the discount perfume store… only to find it was discontinued. ("Ma'am," the lady had told her, "that brand was discontinued <em>ten</em> years ago." The petite salesgirl whispered to her on the way out, "We had an office pool to see how long it would be before we sold it. We were all off by at least 2 years.") The tablespoon of amber reflected in the light and she flopped onto the hotel bed with a sigh. She was Day 5 into a week long conference in Seattle and she could do nothing but pout into the empty room.</p>
<p>At precisely 9pm, her phone rang, as it had done the previous 4 nights, and she muted the TV before answering. </p>
<p>"Hey."</p>
<p>"What's wrong?" was his immediate response. </p>
<p>How could she explain the melancholy that had settled in her heart over something as simple as cheap cologne? "Nothing." Knowing he wouldn't believe her, she clarified, "Just bored. Tired. I was fidgety in the conference today."</p>
<p>"Didn't you bring that fidgety thing I got you?"</p>
<p>"You're my fidgety thing," she all but whined. "It's not the same." Softer, she said, "I miss you."</p>
<p>"I thought that's why you took 3 of my shirts, my red hoodie and my cologne."</p>
<p>"I'm 2 steps away from eating through a container of Ben and Jerry's, and this is the support I get?" His laugh softened her self-pity, until she replayed his words. "Wait. How did you know I took your cologne?" </p>
<p>"Fornell invited me to that new steakhouse in Georgetown. Couldn't find the cologne."</p>
<p>"What'd you need it for?"</p>
<p>"It's a steakhouse. Where else am I gonna wear it?"</p>
<p>She took his teasing in stride, feeling her mood lift. "Shut up. You wear that everywhere with me."</p>
<p>"Because you like it."</p>
<p>"Because you love me."</p>
<p>"Mmm." There was a softness that sanded the edges of an otherwise Gibbsian grunt. </p>
<p>She was having none of his feigned dismissal. "Same reason you call me despite the time difference even though I keep telling you it's not necessary."</p>
<p>He really <em>was</em> sanding, because she heard it get louder, no doubt in an attempt to mask his confession. "Maybe I miss you, Sloane."</p>
<p>The use of her maiden name always sent a warmth through her, like the verbal equivalent of his scent. </p>
<p>"I'm wearing your shirt, your red hoodie and your cologne, if that helps." </p>
<p>"How the hell is that supposed to help?"</p>
<p>Burrowing into the bed and his hoodie and his scent, she mused, "You've got great hands. Put them to use."</p>
<p>Her coy attempt at knocking him off-balance didn't work because all he said was, "Tried last night. Didn't do a damn thing."</p>
<p>His brazen honesty made her laugh even as it sent heat between her legs. "Yeah, I know what you mean."</p>
<p>That attempt worked.</p>
<p>"Shit!" he exclaimed, and she could hear something clatter to the floor. "Godammit, Jack. For that, I'm throwin' out that cologne," he warned. "And the hoodie. And the shirts."</p>
<p>His threats meant nothing, especially when he never completely hid the fact he liked her in any combination of the 3, and his disapproving hum fooled no one.</p>
<p>Still, she felt compelled to say, "You wouldn't. You may have 11 more Marine hoodies and 34 more shirts, but you can't find this cologne anymore. Believe me, I've tried."</p>
<p>"You've counted my shirts."</p>
<p>"And hoodies. How else am I suppose to rank them in order of my favourite?"</p>
<p>"Didn't realize there was list.”</p>
<p>“Oh, there are <em>many</em> lists. Which sweaters are my favourite. Which pants your ass looks best in. Which boxers-” She was sabotaged by her own yawn. “Sorry.”</p>
<p>“You tired yourself out by fidgeting.”</p>
<p>A sleepy smile spread across her face. “I did. See? You should’ve been there.”</p>
<p>The soft scrape-scrape started again. “I’ll be there in 2 days. The airport, anyway.”</p>
<p>She sighed, a touch of melancholy returning. They hadn’t been apart for more than a few days since they’d gotten married and she was finding out how little she liked it. “Promise?” The question was unnecessary but the distance encouraged her small pity party.</p>
<p>“Promise. Whattya want me to wear?”</p>
<p>“Really?” She brought the hoodie’s sleeve up to her nose while she contemplated the offer. “Those blue jeans with the hole in the pocket where your wallet goes. And that grey cable knit sweater with the wool coat?”</p>
<p>“It’s June.” He must’ve heard her little resigned sigh because he said, “Fine. Blue jeans. Hole. Sweater. Coat.”</p>
<p>“I promise you won’t be wearing them long once we get home.” The bounce in her voice brought out his laugh.</p>
<p>“Go to sleep, Sloane.”</p>
<p>“You, too, Cowboy.”</p>
<p>…..</p>
<p>She was right. He didn’t wear the clothes very long. In fact, half of them were gone by the time they’d stumbled to the couch and she had been so focused on getting the rest off (to be fair, he wasn’t taking much time with hers, either) that she had missed the wrapped box on the table. It wasn’t until the air started to cool the sheen of sweat across her back and her heart returned to a less feverish drumbeat that her brain kicked in to the new thing in the familiar room. Lifting her head from his shoulder, she peeked over hers.</p>
<p>“What’s that?”</p>
<p>It was taking his heart a bit longer to slow, and with his head back against the couch, his Adam’s Apple bobbed as he swallowed. “A box?”</p>
<p>“Smart ass,” she accused, nipping his chin with her teeth.</p>
<p>“Why don’t you go look?”</p>
<p>“You just want to watch my ass as I walk away.”</p>
<p>“Yep.”</p>
<p>His honesty got him another light bite, but also got him what he wanted, because she slid off his lap and sauntered to the table in all her naked glory. </p>
<p>“How’s the six, Gunny?”</p>
<p>“Lookin’ pretty good from here, Lieutenant.”</p>
<p>She picked up the box and weighed it in her hand, tilting it back and forth in an attempt to divine its contents.</p>
<p>“Or you could just open it,” he suggested.</p>
<p>“Did I mention the smart ass thing?” It was a rhetorical question as she sauntered back to the couch.</p>
<p>“I like watchin’ you leave, but I love watchin’ you come back.”</p>
<p>“A sweet smart ass,” she amended, returning to his lap with a sigh when his hands automatically went to her hips. She shook the package again until she saw the impatience narrow his eyes. “Okay, okay.” The paper was barely ripped away when her laughter filled the room. “Where did you find this??”</p>
<p>“Somethin’ called ‘ebay’.”</p>
<p>She scowled at his sarcasm, but held up the bottle much in the same way she had in the hotel room; only this time, the bottle was full. He shook his head at her beatific smile.</p>
<p>“I have no idea what you get outta that.”</p>
<p>“I get you. I get a memory.” </p>
<p>She uncapped the bottle and sprayed a short burst under his upturned chin. Their eyes met, blue on brown, full of promises that were punctuated by his kiss.</p>
<p>“Good," he breathed against her lips, ‘cause I got 4 more bottles in the basement.” </p>
<p>She squealed in delight as he twisted her onto the couch, letting the bottle gently hit the floor.</p>
<p>…..</p>
<p>-end</p>

Gemstones Episode 2.7: Holding hands among the yurts, and eating pizza for dessert
Tumblr media
When you get tired of discussing sex: Whew, Eli's not dead after all, but he's in a coma. Jesse/Amber and Judy/BJ hug and cry at his bedside.  Kelvin is noticeably absent.  Then the siblings go out into the parking lot and throw up multiple times. followed by the partners.   Is this a common response to grief, or did they all have bad sushi for dinner?
Ok, we're not tired of discussing sex yet:  We cut to Keefe trapped in the God Squad's tiger cage.  There are several openings to look through, but he prefers the glory hole. This time, Sky (Joel Rush, top photo) pushes through, hitting him in the eye!
Keefe collapses, screaming in pain, and starts to cry.  He has died and gone to hell, being punished for Kelvin's sins -- a veritable Christ figure.  Note that Keefe undergoes a symbolic death and resurrection in every season.
When the God Squad guys leave, Kelvin appears with food and toiletries.  Interestingly, Keefe calls him by the formal "Brother Kelvin."  He isn't sure that he wants a romantic relationship with this guy who lets him suffer in a tiger cage instead of saying "Game's over! Let Keefe out!" and calling security if the God Squad resists.  But Christ-Keefe doesn't even suggest release; instead, he advises Kelvin that he's as powerful as Eli, just as Jesus was as powerful as his Father.
Beauty and the Beast:  In church, Jesse announces that Eli was gunned down while driving on Long Point Road. Trivia note: This is a real road in a suburb of Charleston.  It leads past the Seacoast Church, a megachurch that closely resembles the Salvation Center.
Afterwards, the family is at their post-church dinner at Jason's Steakhouse, when Kelvin arrives, wearing a dark purple robe, carefully holding his glass of orange drink.
They yell at him for not being around late;y, but he isn't ready to show himself in public yet. "I am a beast!"  Jesse quips that the robe makes him look like the beauty from Beauty and the Beast.
Next they argue over who will fill the power vacuum left by Eli's absence, until Martin has had enough: "Can't you just be kind to each other? Self-absorbed, loud, arrogant fucking assholes."  That's about the size of it.
Kelvin agrees:"Y'all are a bunch of a-holes."  Jesse points out that he was talking about "you, too, dick-lips."  The term refers to lips that would be especially nice to have sex with: a call-back to the glory hole scene earlier, and yet another reference to Kelvin being gay.
Tumblr media
Jesse's Plan:  After discussing the possibility of blowing up Junior's house and having a heart-to-heart with Martin, Jesse reveals to the siblings his new plan: he'll tell the congregation and the news media that Eli is recovering, and give them his hospital and room number, so the listening Cycle Ninjas will know to where to strike again.  Except Eli won't be there: Jesse will clear the hospital and lay in wait, ready to gun them down. Can you really clear an entire hospital? The siblings think that it's a crazy idea, but he talks them into it: "Let's lie to the church like a fucking family."
Cut to the ambulances and army jeeps moving Eli to the safe house. Which happens to be his own mansion; is that wise?  Judy, Amber, and the kids join him.
On the third day he rose from the dead:  Meanwhile, Keefe sneaks back to the God Squad compound and tells Keefe: "I'm busting you out of here."
Wait. When Eli visited, Keefe was already in the tiger cage.  Then he was shot, and they announced that he was in a coma in the Sunday service.  IT'S SUNDAY AGAIN!  Has Keefe been in that cage for over a week?  That would be inconceivably brutal.  Besides it wouldn't fit with the Christ motif: Keefe has to descend "into hell" on Friday, and get resurrected on Sunday.   I think there is a problem with the show's continuity.
"Are we taking back the house?" Keefe  asks.  I'd be asking a lot more than that, just before I called the police and my lawyer.
"We are ejecting," Kelvin answers. "We'll move in with the rest of the family in the safe house." They run hand-in-hand through the yard to freedom.
This is a significant scene: Kelvin admits that Keefe is a member of the family, and invites a public display of affection that establishes them as a romantic couple.  A scene ago he yelled at Keefe for trying to hold his hand.  Now he initiates it.
Question: Keefe is wearing only a jockstrap.  Where do they intend to find clothes? Kelvin had to move their stuff out of the master bedroom suite,  but it would still be in the house, right?
Pizza and Cycle Ninjas:  At the safe house, Keefe goes to work on embedding himself into the family.  First he advises Kelvin to visit his father (and calls him Brother instead of the formal Brother Kelvin).  Then he tries to distract Jesse's kids from the crisis with what he thinks are funny stories.  While they are eating pizza, he notes that as a young boy, he often had pizza for every meal, even for dessert. That's not funny, it's sad.  Where were your parents?
They are not impressed.
We cut to Kelvin visiting the comatose Eli.  He admits that the God Squad was kind of dumb, but he just started it to make Eli proud. And invite a lot of musclemen to the steam showers.  He prays, promising to "never succumb to hubris again" if  God heals Eli.  And Eli speaks!  A miracle! The end.
Oh, right, we still have 15 minutes to go.  Jesse, the men in the family, and the mercenaries waiting in the cleared hospital.   Four Cycle Ninjas appear, armed with rifles. One is shot, and the others flee.  Jesse follows, knocks a second off his motorcycle, and shoves a taser up his butt, enacting an anal rape. Gideon chases and subdues the others.  The end.
The full review, with nude photos and explicit sexual discussions, is on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends

The nerd in me
Amber was in bed writing in her notebook when I climbed up next to her and kissed her on the cheek.
She looked at me, “what would you think about doing a little roleplay?” she asked out of the blue.
“Like... to spice things up a bit?” I smirked.
Amber nodded and closed her notebook before putting it away.
“Yes, I think that would be a lot of fun,” I smiled and pulled her in my arms.
“The girls were talking at our little get together. One of the girls had tried it with her husband and it really turned them on, if I’m being honest I had thought about it beforehand but I have no clue what we should do or how to start. I need more than just a mechanic and a sexual favor to get me going,” she blushed looking up at me.
I laughed and caressed her cheek, “oh, baby, I love you. I really do,” I held her closer.
“I need more of a back story, it’s the nerd in me,” she giggled as she shrugged, “I’m glad you find my nerdiness amusing,” she said playfully pushing me away.
“Come back here,” I said as I pulled her back into my arms. “I think between the two of us we could come up with something that works for us both. So, I take it that you do want to go with the whole mechanic thing?” She nodded, “I always thought you look sexy in your overalls or work shirt,” she giggled and bit her lip.
“I could go with that,” I nodded, “now we just need to come up with a little bit of a story line then,” I smirked down at Amber who had her head on my chest as she looked up at me, “naughty girl,” I chuckled before kissing her nose.
Over the next few days I tried to come up with a better story than a broke car and a sexual favor to pay for it to get fixed.
Hey babe. My mom is taking the kids for the night, it’s part of the whole rp thing and we’re going on a date.
Sounds perfect. Tell me more about it later?
Yes baby ;)
Later that night I was in the bathroom finishing up. I had put on my work shirt and a pair of jeans. I had told Amber that instead of a sexual favor, the story could just be that her sexy mechanic takes her out on a date and sees where the night takes them. I told Amber to meet me at my favorite steak house.
“You’re driving me crazy already, Teller,” Amber whined playfully as I got out of my truck. “If this is driving you crazy, wait until later, babe,” I kissed her gently before squeezing her hand. She had on a nice blouse and flowy pants, she look stunning as always.
“Ladies first,” I smiled holding the door for her.
“Well, thank you,” she giggled before rolling inside the steakhouse. We were seated right away.
“So, how long have you been a mechanic, Jax?” Amber asked with a smile on her face.
“Since I was 18,” I smirked playing along. “And how long have you had your job at the local newspaper?” I took a small bite of my steak.
“Almost ten years now. I moved here from New York,” she sipped on her drink.
I nodded with a smile and the date went on. We had a really nice time and the roleplay was going good so far. After I had paid the check we were in the parking lot.
“Thank you, Jackson, I had a lovely time. Would you like to come by my place for a drink and to talk some more? Would be a shame if the night had to end here already,” she giggled.
“I would love to, Amber,” I smirked. I leaned down and kissed her forehead and she pulled me further down to let her lips brush against mine with a smile.
“You have a really nice place here,” I said as we later went outside to enjoy the night air.
“Thank you,” she smiled, “you’ll have to show me your place another time,” she said with a wink.
“I would love that,” I said letting my hand take hers as we sat beside each other.
“Jax, I know this was a way to pay for my car getting fixed, but I actually did have a really nice time tonight,” she said and almost seemed shy.
“So did I,” I said before leaning in for a kiss. One thing led to another and I picked her up in my arms and carried her into the kitchen to sit her down on the kitchen counter.
“Is here okay or do we need to take it into the living room?” I said between breaths as we pulled apart.
“No, here’s fine,” she smiled before pulling her own shirt over her head and throwing it on the floor. “It’s been a while for me,” she said nervously.
“Me too,” I smiled as I stood between her legs. I took off my pants and boxers and was about to take off my shirt but Amber stopped me.
“No, let me,” she smirked before slowly lifting up in my shirt and kissing my chest. “I love you,” she whispered. I looked at her and she laughed briefly, “we can break character a little, righ?”
“I love you too, baby,” I smirked placing my finger under her chin.
Her hand moved down my body until I could feel her hand wrap around my cock before she started slowly stroking it.
“Mmmh, baby,” I moaned as I felt her other hand on my ass. Her hands on my body was all I could focus on. After a minute or two I laid her back down on the table with my hand behind her head so she didn’t hit the table too heard. Before I got on top of her I gently slid down her panties and watching them fall to the floor.
“Jax,” she looked at me and I looked at her, “I want my badass biker tonight,” she bit her lip and I nodded.
“You got it, baby,” I whispered in her ear.
It wasn’t long until we were moving in a hard, fast and steady rhythm. Amber moaned against my neck as her hand scratched its way down my back. I’d definitely have marks from that tomorrow.
“Harder, Jax, please,” she panted grabbing my free hand and squeezing it hard since my other hand was in her hair.
“You like it when your old man fucks you like this don’t you sweetheart?”
All Amber did was moan, I could feel her legs wrap tightly around my waist. “Since you said please,” I gently nibbled on her ear before biting her neck as I set up the pace.
“More,” Amber pleaded again.
“This?” I smirked as I leaned back and made eye contact with her before going even deeper.
“Yes,” she tilted her head back and moaned, “please,” she almost screamed. I kept it going for a minute before I collapsed on top of her as we both came.
“Holy… Jax, that was…” she panted.
“I know,” I chuckled as I slowly came to myself and got down from the table to pick Amber up in my arms. I took her to the living room where I laid her down on the sofa.
“That was one hell of a thank you,” I said still playing along.
“Yes, I would say so too,” she blushed as I gave her a blanket. I gently ran my finger over her cheek.
“Can we talk as us now?” she giggled.
“Yes,” I laughed and lied down beside her before pulling her into my arms.
“Is this something we could try again sometime?” she asked kissing my bare chest.
“Yes, I would love that. I had a blast to be honest,” I kissed her shoulder, “what about you?”
“I liked it,” she had a content smile on her face, “it was kind of weird at first but then it stopped being awkward,” she giggled.
“I agree,” I kissed her cheek and let my fingers run up and down her arms. I pulled the blanket over our bodies as Amber snuggled up to me even more.
“Thank you for tonight baby and for putting so much thought into it. I really appreciated it,” she looked up at me with her big eyes.
“I’d do anything for you, I want you to know that, babe,” I kissed her neck lightly.
“The nerd in me really liked it,” she giggled.
“I’m glad,” I laughed.
Amber slowly fell asleep in my arms and I laid there thinking about how grateful I was for her and our life together.

One Day in Southern Alberta: Heartland's Amber Marshall
The award-winning actress tells us about her experience on CBC's Heartland, her family ranch, and her favourite food and drink spots in Southern Alberta
When Amber Marshall moved to Alberta in 2006, she was already an established actress with multiple acclaimed acting credits to her name, but what she’s accomplished in the time since has been nothing short of remarkable.
Today, Marshall has her own clothing and jewelry fashion line, is the publisher and principle writer for her magazine, Amber Marshall Life & Style, and is now getting set to serve as the Calgary Stampede’s 2019 Parade Marshal.
Despite having a career chocked-full of success and notoriety, Amber manages to stay down to earth, thanks in large part to the time she spends on her ranch with her husband. Together, the two have raised a variety of animals on their Alberta property, including horses, cattle, rabbits, birds, cats, and dogs--all while managing to find time to volunteer at the local veterinary clinic.
In the midst of filming an incredible 13th season for the long-running hit CBC show Heartland, the multi-talented actress took some time out of her busy schedule to talk about acting, ranching, and her earnest passion for Canadian food.
13 seasons of Heartland and counting
Working on Heartland is incredible. An actor can only dream of a job that has such longevity, and it’s very rare in our industry to come across something like this project. I think it’s a unique experience because for most actors, when they’re hired on a job, it might last one season or two seasons, if you’re lucky, maybe three, but to be on 13 years and counting is unbelievable.
I think that both myself and my character have become more alike over the years because the writers take advantage of things that have happened in my own life and they create them in the story. It’s really unique because I get to wake up every morning and go out and see my horses, and then I go to work and pretend to do all the same things that I do at home.
I think that’s something that not a lot of shows are blessed with. I kind of live the same life as my character and even though it’s a fully scripted drama, I’m able to bring that realism into it and share those experiences.
Favourite Canadian food
I think for me, one thing about living in Alberta is the easy access to great Alberta beef. My husband bought a smoker this year and he prepares some of the most amazing steaks and roasts and we are so lucky that we have access to great Alberta beef. So, I think that every main dish for me usually starts with that. I’m very fortunate to be able to raise a lot of the meat that we consume, so I know exactly where it’s been and how it’s lived. Knowing where your food comes from is something I think is very rewarding.
Also, being on Ontario girl, I love corn on the cob. That’s usually my pairing of choice. So, I would say steak, potatoes, corn on the cob, and then a nice, fresh salad.
Favourite meal growing up
My mom used to make a really good Shepherd's Pie--I always enjoyed that. My dad made a really good carrot ginger soup. I always remember when I wasn’t feeling well, he would make carrot ginger soup, and I still make it to this day because I love it. So, it's between dad's carrot ginger soup and mom’s Shepherd's Pie.
Breakfast and brunch
Most recently, I absolutely have fallen in love with Westwood in Black Diamond. They only serve brunch on Sundays, so I make sure every Sunday, I always get in there for brunch because it’s just excellent. They also make great lunches and on Saturdays, they make homemade donuts, but you have to get in there before 9 a.m. because they’re usually fully sold out by then.
I also love the Chuckwagon in Turner Valley; It's kind of a staple for ranchers in the west.
Dinner
For dinner, you can’t top the Longview Steakhouse. The only problem with the Longview Steakhouse is that you can never get a seat. You can’t just drop in there. You definitely need to have reservations and they usually have to be at least three weeks in advance.
Drinks and Dessert
I don’t drink but I would actually say Westwood again because they make really good specialty coffees. I had a lavender latte there the other day that was excellent. If I’m going to get together with a girlfriend for a coffee or a little chat, I usually end up at Westwood because it’s a nice atmosphere and they have great beverages.
Of all the meals, I love dessert the most. So, any good meal for me is always finished with a really good dessert. I don’t really have a favourite place, I just always stick to ice cream as my go-to. I love any good ice cream shop--I’m in there and I’m double scooping for sure.
