a tu lado.
Ámalo sin miedo,
él no va a lastimarte;
no tengas pudor.
Entrégale todo lo que yo no pude darle.
Cuídalo por mí,
porque la persona que está en tus brazos,
es el amor de mi vida.

every day i'm thrilled that the audiobook reader for WITNESS FOR THE DEAD took one look at Iäna Pel-Thenhior, went "that man... is a fruit", and proceeded to give him the queeniest manner of speaking. it's a perfect choice. no notes

please read the witness for the dead because the protagonist is a priest and a crime investigator AND a zombie hunter. he's dirt poor. he carries his guilt like a little package. he feeds his neighborhood cats. he's so tired. he daily drinks his body weight in tea. he's put on trial by ordeal. he's even gay

The Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison to release on 11 March 2025
The end of Sarah Monette/Katherine Addison's The Cemeteries of Amalo trilogy, a spin-off of The Goblin Emperor (together known as The Chronicles of Osreth) has been listed as releasing on 11 March 2025, and there's now a summary:
"Thara Celehar has lost his ability to speak with the dead. When that title of Witness for the Dead is gone, what defines him?
While his title may be gone, his duties are not. Celehar contends with a municipal cemetery with fifty years of secrets, the damage of a revethavar he’s terrified to remember, and a group of miners who are more than willing to trade Celehar’s life for a chance at what they feel they’re owed.
Celehar does not have to face these impossible tasks alone. Joining him are his mentee Velhiro Tomasaran, still finding her footing with the investigative nature of their job; Iäna Pel-Thenhior, his beloved opera director friend and avid supporter; and the valiant guard captain Hanu Olgarezh.
Amidst the backdrop of a murder and a brewing political uprising, Celehar must seek justice for those who cannot find it themselves under a tense political system. The repercussions of his quest are never as simple they seem, and Celehar’s own life and happiness hang in the balance."

grief of stones spoilers//
i have this theory that tura's lover was ema dramenezh (the marquis's secretary)
hear me out here. in witness we learn that tura's lover must be highly placed and vulnerable to scandal, which i think could fit a noble's secretary. we also learn that he is at the opera every night, and iäna doesn't know why.
in grief, he's absent from the opera for a couple of weeks after the fateful zhelsu opening. then when he returns, iäna makes the exact same remarks about dramenezh's reasons for being there. we also learn that iäna has told the marquis everything they know about tura's death.
i find that last significant because it sets the marquis up very nicely to put two & two together. it makes sense structurally to have tura's lover be someone we've met already; it'll make the payoff better. and katherine addison is so good at weaving little secret connecting threads together in these books
in conclusion. i highly suspect ema dramenezh is going to have a bad time in the next book :)

There’s a release date and blurb for the final Cemeteries of Amalo book!
Coming 11 March 2025
In The Tomb of Dragons, Katherine Addison returns to the award-winning world of The Goblin Emperor, deftly wrapping up The Cemeteries of Amalo trilogy.

That bit in Witness for the Dead when Celehar is forced into a conversation he's been trying to avoid, so he offers up a little prayer to the patron god of earthquakes?
Yeah.

U reckon thara ever bumps into any of his petitioners at the municipal baths? Naturally, he'd be mortified if it ever happened and refuse to make eye contact with anyone but imagine it from the petitioner's pov like "oh that mysterious prelate who can fight ghouls and see ghosts and solved the emperor's murder? yea i saw him crying silently to himself in the bath this morning, he looked like a drowned cat." like surely being seen sopping wet ruins the dark and moody vibes somewhat
