Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1D
This is a Titan vs. Titan fight and I apologize for nothing. I woke up and chose violence throughout this entire poll.
Seven-time Tony nominee, two-time winner Bernadette Peters (1948) has a sixty-plus year stage career of monumental proportions. Considered the foremost Sondheim interpreter, their collaborative works include Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Gypsy (2003), and Follies (2011). She has a thriving concert career, and was a co-founder of the beloved Broadway Barks event each year in Shubert Alley. She has an honorary third Tony (Isabelle Stevenson Award) for her outstanding advocacy and philanthropy.
Eight-time Tony nominee, three-time winner Patti LuPone (1949) has a staggering fifty-plus year stage career. Award-winning roles include Eva Peron in Evita (1979), Gypsy (2008), and Company (2022). She has toured the US with her wildly successful concert and cabaret acts, and will kill you on sight if she sees a cell phone in the theatre. Patti was NOT Norma Desmond on Broadway, and because of it, is the proud owner of the ALW Memorial Pool. She is no longer a member of Actors' Equity.

So we’re clear, poll answers have a character limit. If you’re like “you didn’t list Into The Woods THIS IS BOGUS” I am going to ask you to put your critical thinking skills to good use and figure out which category a SONDHEIM musical might belong in.

also you’re so real for making megumi yuuta’s favorite kouhai. i’ve been pushing the agenda since it was stated megumi only respected yuuta 😭. i also been pushing that megumi is gojo favorite student agenda as well.
Panda: Nobara.
They are the exact same type of asshole. Do you remember in the goodwill event where they ganged up on momo together? No other first year understands him the way nobara does. She’s his beloved little sister and they like to torment people together.
It also helps because they both have a very self assured and confident outlook in life. Panda isn’t tortured about being a panda—he’s happy how he is and doesn’t want to be human. Nobara is very confident and self assured in her own identity and loves herself in whatever situation (as seen in her conversation with momo about gender). They just click.
Inumaki: Yuuji.
While Yuuta’s in Africa he has custody of Megumi but this is like when your friend asks you to watch their cat with lemming instincts. He adores Megumi but he is so so stressed. Every time he turns around megumis getting his ass beat by some shirtless dude or trying to summon Mahoraga. He heard Megumi order Kamo to get him out of the line of fire during the fight with the special grade and aged ten years. Yuuta come back and get your boy he’s so much work.
Yuuji isn’t off put by inumakis speech difficulties and treats him the same as anyone. He’s extremely upbeat, a bit of a troll (re: fushiguro is getting hit on), which fits well with Inumaki, and Inumaki wanted to look out for him from the start the way he did for Yuuta. Inumaki isn’t a freak of nature like yuuji or Maki, but he is extremely fit. They’re exercise buddies and Inumaki is extremely fond of him.
Maki: Megumi.
This was the HARDEST ONE to do because Maki really does (secretly) adore each of the first years in different ways. Like, Yuuji’s the only one who can keep up with her in a fight. They’re enthusiastic sparring partners. She loves that crazy fucker.
Nobara went out of her way from the start to be close to Maki (because of her crush the size of the international space station) and they do end up forming their own special personal relationship. Nobara almost won this poll.
Megumi won by a hair and 90% of it is just because of how much history they have. Some part of him is always going to be the little boy who ran away with her little sister and played with them in the woods. He’s always gonna be the little boy who was angry and afraid and hurt but still was their friend.
While she’s not nearly as openly protective as Yuuta, I think she internally feels very protective of Megumi. He’s the family member she hasn’t lost or failed yet.
Makis emotional state regarding Mai is a very complex one. She doesn’t regret her decision to leave and become a jujutsu sorcerer. She had to do it. She couldn’t let the Zenin just crush her into nothing. But she doesn’t regret that it came at mais expense, and while she wouldn’t change her decision, she doesn’t have to live with her. Her relationship with Mai feels irreparable in her mind and it’s always going to eat at her just a little. But Megumi is her nephew or cousin or something (I'm convinced they have no concrete idea how their family tree is actually connected so they're just nebulously related somehow) and he's someone she can actually watch out for He's someone she can take care of in a way she really can't with mai anymore. she hasn't failed him and he doesn't hate her. Especially in the sea glass gardens universe, where her first meeting with him since they were little kids was coming off of her family's abuse of him--she meets him and immediately is reminded of just how terrible her family can be. she's instantly ushered into an opportunity to assume the protector role as the older cousin/aunt and it frames how she thinks of him.
maki loves all of the first years in their own way but a part of her is always gonna be a little partial to that angry little boy who fucking booked it with mai and tore up his clothes and called naoya a piece of shit for hurting her sister. the one who never had time to play but played with the outcast sisters the first time he got a chance. he was kind to mai and was punished for it and still said they could be friends. it's been years since that happened and she thought they'd never have any kind of relationship, but she's thankful she got to be his senpai. it means she gets to look out for him
#yuuta insists he doesn't play favorites with the first years but it is not true#he fools no one#megumi is his boy now and forever he is so so obvious in his favoritism#maki is so subtle that no one knows except for her that she's playing favorites#inumaki's hard to read both because of the rice ball thing and also because he spends so much time trying to watch out for megumi on yuuta'#behalf that it's hard to tell if he's playing favorites or just a very dedicated senpai#panda will say out loud that nobara is his favorite but nobara just wants to know if she's MAKI'S favorite#sorry nobara the gay cousins have to look out for each other
