Is this thing on? Been a lonnnnnng while, but I want to test the waters to see if there's an audience for country music on Tumblr 2023.
I've been making a weekly playlist in lieu of a radio show for a couple months now. Figure that'd be a good place to start.
If you like country music that's outside the mainstream, check out this playlist. It's full of new and recent releases. I kick it off with a classic country song and send it off with Willie Nelson. In between you'll find music from artists making country music in their own way with their own style. While the music changes every week, the playlist stays in the same spot. Plus, there's an archive where I retire the old playlists.
If you find something you like, let me know and give the artists a follow on instagram.

MINI_REVIEW(s):
The review template of choice for the TL;DR Tribe…
‘TRULY FREE AT LAST?’ (@candlepin_records) is the latest EP from @collective_fear & it finds the Los Angeles-based project of Michael Guerard spreading its dream_poppin goods across 4 tracks that deftly pull from a slew of guitar-driven genres, ranging from Emo-tinged Indie to pedal_gazed Alt to shimmery NuWave & quietly loud post_rocking_post_punk (w/ a dash of guitar hero theatrics) as evidenced on “Fall Apart”
‘KENNETH ANGER’ (@sacredbones) is the latest LP from @constant_smiles & it finds Ben Jones’ Massachusetts-based collective sounding wholly refreshed while unleashing their newfound sonic awakening across a 10-track spread that’s awash in plenty of warm FM synths, driving low-ends & dreamier soundscapes, but don’t get it twisted, there’s still plenty of chambered melancholy as witnessed on album highlight “I’m On Your Side”
‘THE RAINBOW WHEEL OF DEATH’ (@wharfcatrecords) is the latest LP from @dougiepoole666 & it finds the NY-based singer-songwriter treading Brooklyn’s indie underground across 9 tracks that wholly displays the artist’s mastery of all things Cosmo_Country… as every slide, twang & drawl is treated w/ delicate care even when holding his own amongst his fellow classic_rawking peers as evidenced on “High Scholl Gym”
‘SHALLOW’ is the debut EP from @drown.phl & it finds the Philly-based trio of Tom Vichinsky (vocals/guitar) Bret Hart (drums) & Frank Thomson JR (bass) dead ass repping their city across 4 deliciously detached tracks that bring a Nu_gazing wallop of stacked dissonance, swirling six-strings & bummed-out vibing as heard on album opener “Feel Less”

Rusty Reid's Musical Tale of Rio Frio"
Rusty Reid's got this amazing thing going on, not just with his music skills, but how he brings history alive, like adding this special charm that's just so captivating, you know?
Right from the start, "Rio Frio" sets itself up as this musical journey that mixes the cultures of Mexico and America. Reid did a wonderful job on choosing this instrumentation, not just because its sweet and ear pleasing, but it also compliments the lyrics of the song perfectly
The theme behind the creation of “Rio Frio” is a historic one,so at the mention of it, it brings back memories. And atop that Rusty Reid tells a beautiful story on a sweet instrumentation. The song paints a picture of this fading cowboy guy, lost in thoughts about this faraway love while staring at the stars by the calm waters of the Rio Frio.

The lyrics make this clear picture, and you can really feel it, you know? Anyone who knows what it's like to miss stuff can connect to these feelings. Reid's way of putting all these deep feelings into his words shows he's a super talented songwriter.
One thing I love about this song is the level at which listeners can relate with, we all have that special person, so from time to time they cross our mind and we hope they are also thinking about us.
Production credit goes to
Rusty - vocals, electric guitar
Steve Beasley - acoustic guitars, electric guitar, accordion, bass, backing vocals

After an extended hiatus, the weekly playlist is back. If you’re new here, I find new and recent indie country releases on Fridays, throw them in a playlist, listen to it over the weekend, edit accordingly and publish it for you to hear, share and enjoy.
It always starts off with something classic, as a nod to where we’ve been and ends with a track by Willie Nelson because I could probably make these for week in, week out for 20 years and never run out of songs.
While January is typically a slow month, it’s off to a pretty good start. About 2/3 was released in the last 30 days, which is all up front, and the last 1/3 is from Oct/Nov, when I last published a list. I’ve got couple irons in the fire right now regarding getting back on the air, but nothing completely baked yet. In the meantime, give this a listen and let me know what you like.

IN A MINUTE:
A_NEW_MUSICAL_EXPRESSS…
“NOT IDEAL” is the latest single from AFTERNOON BIKE RIDE’s forthcoming LP titled ‘Glossover’ (2/10 @fofmusic-blog) & it finds the Montreal-based trio of multi-instrumentalists Lia Kurihara, David Tanton & Éloi Le Blanc-Ringuette coping as best as they can over a minimal bout of calmly blissed IndiePop.
//
ALEX LAHEY is here w/ a new standalone single titled “SHIT TALKIN’” (Liberation Recs) & it finds the Melbourne-based artist sipping some Coopers Sparkling, stomping the fuzz pedals & teaming up w/ John Mark Nelson to talk that ish across 3+ mins of power_popped IndieRawk.
//
CONVINCED FRIEND are here w/ “SAFEWAY,” the final single from their forthcoming self-titled LP (11/11 @reliefmaprecords) & it finds the Providence-based trio of A.S. Wilson (guitar/vox), Bradford Krieger (bass) & Casey Belisle (drums) bringing that bottom of the bottle dread across a 3:39 clip of twanged AltCountry.
//
“BY DESIGN” is a choice cut from NOTOFTHISWORLD’s brand new EP titled ‘Regalia’ (Suburban Creeps Recs) & it finds Philly-based duo bringing their blown-out, noise-tinged & cold_waving brand of minimalist PostPunk.
//
SOFT CULT are here w/ “DRAIN,” the lead single from their forthcoming EP titled ‘See You in the Dark’ (TBA: Spring) & it finds the Canadian duo of Mercedes & Phoenix Arn-Horn living their “music for mall goths 🤍🖤” mantra across 3+ mins of soft_grunging AltRawk.
//
“BUSINESS INC.” is the closing track on STUCCO’s latest release titled “ep1” (Midwest Debris) & it finds the Calgary-based outfit rhythmically exploring “the wicked, crumbling metropolis of our prairie city turned corporate theme park” across a 3:28 of agitatedly angular post_punk.
//
