Golden Kamuy chapters 231 & 232.
Hey all, here is my belated and likely as little bit shorter than normal summary. I’m taking the weekend off from dealing with work related stuff but I’m still off dealing with the constantly changing situation here.
We start off with Inkarmat about to give birth with the assistance of Osoma’s mother and huci. I wondered why Osoma’s mom doesn’t have a name but if I recall all of the Ainu names in the manga have to not belong to a living person (I think from an interview with Noda) to be respectful, so I’m guessing it is trickier than normal to keep coming up with appropriate and proper names for the Ainu characters. This might be a good work around for the time being for Noda.
And the title page for the chapere tells us that is is birth and that Huci is the most seasoned midwife possible and that she was also Asirpa’s midwife. The title page also has the quote that “Purpose is handed down from heaven.” sticking with the central theme of the manga included in each volume of the manga.
The title page also makes it almost look like Huci is blessing someone perhaps linked to Asirpa. Tanigaki then being the dude that he is decides to leave Inkarmat in their hands as he uses this as an excuse to slip away and find Tsukishima.
In a way this is both in and out of character for him. It is in character for him to run away from emotional moments and duties but it is out of character for him to steal Sugimoto’s tagline that he’s immortal.
Inkarmat is clearly the smarter of the couple, he first off tells him to NOT fight or attempt to fight Tsukishima and then she flat out calls his bluff telling him that he’s not immortal and that he should run away by himself. She likely observed Tsukishima enough during her time at the hospital that she knew he wouldn’t give up and that if they want to be safe Tanigaki should draw him away.
It really doesn’t matter as soon as he leaves the house, he gets his ass handed to him by Tsukishima. He’s pushed back into the house and Tsukishima approaches everyone. Tanigaki again repeats similar actions in regards to what happened to him with Ogata as he sees it to be his job to protect who ever is there e.g. Huci and Osoma, now Huci, Osoma’s mom, Inkarmat. . . .
Tanigaki perplexes me - he’s one of the cast members who is more than willing to throw himself in the line of fire to protect women and children, but he’s also the most likely to run from his responsibilities. Why is he a hypocrite? There must be something more to this . . . I’m just still not sure what it is.
Tsukishima simply and in a deadpan fashion tells him that he’s been making the “wrong” choice for a long time now.
He distances himself from Huci and Inkarmat by referring to them as “this woman” and “that old lady” and that it is because of their influence over him he did not come back to the 27th. This makes a lot of sense from Tsukishima to be so weird about things. He has no fiancee to return home to and to family. He sees that he has no choice but to return to the 27th as it is all that he has.
Just as things are about to escalate Koito rushes in on horseback. He’s still wearing his yukuta from the hospital but threw on his boots and officer’s coat. Tsukishima doesn’t even look at Koito as he asks if Koito followed him to see if they would escape. And Koito firmly tells him that he can’t see what good would come from killing Tanigaki and Inkarmat. He points out that Tanigaki isn’t their only way to find Asirpa and that they should let them run away.
And here Koito is being incredibly logical and reasonable! They don’t need to reply on Tanigaki. Yes, Tsurumi sent him to find Asirpa but Koito is seeing the bigger picture, one that Tsukishima currently can’t see. Koito tries to reason with him that making a threat that you can’t follow through on is meaningless. Tsukishima then finally turns and threatens Koito with his pistol while keeping the rifle focused on Tanigaki and Inkarmat. He makes it clear that his threat to Koito from Karafuto is real. The zoom in on Tsukishima with his veins bulging out, the extreme stress lines under his eyes the chaotic screentone. He creepily asks which side the 2 lt. is on and follows it up with the fact that he learned he was used by Tsurumi that he now has joined the traitors.
The final panel shows an equally stressed out Koito where we can see a very distinct frown and stress lines as well as a rather messy screentone behind him. I really see that Koito is concerned but he seems more in control that I’ve seen from him. There is something about how he’s drawn here - I can’t quite put my finger on it but he seems more mature and determined. And I know that Koito can be a pretty determined guy but - but he’s different.
The next page then seals the deal for me. A full page Koito giving Sergent Tsukishima an order! Koito tells him to lower his weapon as it is an order! Koito has finally decided to take charge as he should as a second lieutenant. Time and time before we’ve seem him defer to Tsukishima and now he finally takes command.
He follows up with the fact that he’s going to watch both Tsukishima and Tsurumi to the very end [of this hunt for the gold].
Bam! Oh man, I have been waiting so long for Koito to take the initiative and use the potential leadership skills that he’s been keeping dormant. This is just such a satisfying page and turn of events.
The shock on Tsukishima’s face really brings it home. The little second lieutenant has finally grown up and he’s actually thought things through. I love the half light dark shading on Tsukishima’s face as he turns to look to Koito.
Furthermore, Koito uses Tsukishima’s own words to support his argument and where he stands in regards to Tsurumi. What has changed is that Koito will now be using his own judgement to analyze what Tsurumi is doing and not following orders blindly. I know this is a translation into english, but using the concept of justice gives Koito’s thought process more backing. He’s showing that he is a just and fair man, not someone who blindly follows orders and he is worried about how if he does something unjust he’ll have feelings of guilt and regret.
Therefore, Koito is letting us know how he intends to lead men, something he was sent to Karafuto to learn and I think he learned part of his beliefs during the Karafuto trip.
The next page is quite sad, Tsukishima admits that he has nothing to live for, so all he can do is his job - his job for Tsurumi that makes him unredeemable. He’s seen and caused so much death that Tsukishima doesn’t care anymore - he’s the empty shell of the man he once was and Koito tells him, his mentor that it isn’t true. Koito’s figured out that Tsukishima must have thrown away something so massive that becoming the inflexible right hand man of Tsurumi was all that he could do. Tsukishima is so many different emotions as Koito hits the nail on the head. His lips are puckered implying he’s biting them or holding something in as we can barely see his eyes.
Tsukishima finally shows us the face of his fiancee, smiling at him as her hair blows in the wind. He’s finally facing what he misses the most and his largest regret. He appears to tremble as he says Inkarmat’s name.
A completely broken and defeated [by himself] Tsukishima begins to ask her if “that girl is she. . .” and Inkarmat starts to move to give him an answer.
However, her fortune telling is interrupted by a contraction.
Tsukishima has given up - his barriers have been broken and he’s just a man who hurts and is in pain.
Osoma’s mom then is able to interrupt their conversation of sorts and orders all the boys to do her bidding to assist with the birth. The chapter then returns to Ainu culture 101, as elements of birthing are covered as they collect items that are used in childbirth. Koito, Tanigaki and Tsukishima are pretty much whipped into shape as they assist in all sorts of things, collecting straw, babysitting, collecting mugwort etc etc.
I personally saw this as a few pages of the tough men all being put in their place and dealing with the bigger picture - the fact that Inkarmat needs their help to give birth and that it is more important than any of their own self-imposed problems. I think the three of them standing outside of the house really get the point across. Tanigaki can’t look at either Koito and Tsukishima.
It really doesn’t matter since Tsukishima just had his own break down as he sits lost in his own thoughts while Koito stands firm with the lighting and viper’s child.
Inkarmat then safely delivers the child and the chapter ends. I think it really caps things off that the “miracle” of birth supersedes all of the shit these guys have been dealing with.
Chapter 232 continues where we left off with Inkarmat and Tanigaki. Of course now that Inkarmat has safely delivered their child, it is time for the - you guessed it - penis jokes!
Tanigaki gets all teary as he tells Inkarmat that she was great. His eyes are teary and sparkly as he thinks that the stump of the umbilical cord is a large penis - Tanigaki dick joke number 4,368 (ok, I jest). This then allows him to realize that he’s got a daughter as he becomes a complete teary mess.
His blushing and tears confuse me - I can’t tell if he is proud or disappointed of the fact that she’s well a girl. Sometimes, I just can’t get a handle on Noda’s sense of humor - but I think he’s disappointed . . . since the vast majority of east Asian men would want a son. But then Tanigaki isn’t 100% normal. I’m totally over contemplating this and I lack the cultural context to really get it.
Koito and Tsukishima confront the man from the 27th who was supposed to be watching out for Asirpa. Catching him re-handed and clearly hungover Koito is able to scare him into shape telling him to get his “shit together” and to report things are normal pretending like he’s doing the man a favor (and the dumb nobody interprets as such).
Osoma sees Tanigaki, seems surprised but then quickly returns to playing with another kid. She has moved on from her “crush” on him and Tanigaki seems a bit hurt as she moves along. Tanigaki needs to realize he doesn’t need a relationship with a child like Osoma, he’s got his own daughter now and Inkarmat to be with! Yeah dude, I get it, but time to be a real dad, not a fun uncle type.
At the same time Tsukishima asks Koito about his behaviour on Karafuto before they met up with Tsurumi again. Tsukishima asks him if he was “faking it” which Koito pretty much confirms with his statement that Tsukishima is “free to interpret it . . . - pausing - whichever way you like”.
As Koito says this we see another new facial expression from him, one of calm and again more maturity. Koito likely wasn’t comfortable or proud of what he did, but he was smart enough to know what to do - to con Tsukishima so to speak. Being a bit deceptive likely goes against Koito’s own feelings - I think it gets him closer to say someone like Ogata, a man who he always thought was running a long game con, but may feel a bit differently about him since Ogata told him the truth.
Koito then becomes more serious as he tells Tsukishima what he’s thinking. He doesn’t think that Tsurumi’s personal goals would be to sacrifice his men for his own wealth or power. He hints at the fact that Tsurumi would be motivated by a goal that is not so simple so to speak. He then asks Tsukishima it he has any idea - at first Tsukishima wonders if he lacks a “true goal” but then he realizes something.
As he has been Tsurumi’s right hand man, there is a flashback where he noticed that Tsurumi had someone’s finger bones when he’s been alone in his office.
He asks Koito if he’s seen the finger bones and Koito asks whose bones? Tsukishima then determines that maybe it is something else and he drops the idea.
As the topic drops off, Koito instead tries to cheer up Tsukishima and inspire him to follow him as a commanding officer. And that they should follow the more typical military mindset. Again the chapter returns to awkward Koito humor where he tries to modifiy his picture of Tsukishima with a half Koito face with Tsurumi to inspire Tsukishima.
With these post-birth events, I’ll now turn to this chapters title page here. This is a transition/summary title page. All the different groups are shown with their overall intentions. Tsukishima and Koito are looking for Asirpa for Tsurumi. Tanigaki and Inkarmat don’t have a direction implying they are leaving the immediate action. Sugimoto, Shiraishi and Asirpa are after the pirate, while even though Vasily in their group, he’s out for Ogata. Hijikata’s group is both looking for Asirpa and the Jack the ripper convict and Kikuta and Usami are also looking for him.
It is all one giant ball of confusion [cue love and rockets] but highlights so clearly that Vasily is not a part of team Sugimoto. I think Noda really wants to make it clear that Sugimoto’s game plan of the enemy of my enemy is my friend is likely going to backfire. Really he should just put out and ad “Russian snow leopard seeks Japanese lynx for kitty sniper games.”
The more I look at this page the more mis-matched teams I see, Kikuta and Usami has a fragile feel - likely more than just general dislike but true distrust. Ogata is back on team Hijikata but only out of convenience and the rest of his group is also a mess with Ariko caught between him and Tsurumi.
Such a major theme of the groups in this manga is how so many aren’t actually good - they just serve a purpose for the short term but ultimately are playing different long games.
Now back to the chapter - 1 week later Tanigaki and Inkarmat leave the kotan with their daughter. Koito orders them to head south and to avoid running into any men from the 27th. Tanigaki is back to wearing Ainu garb to likely blend in and not draw as much attention back to traveling with Inkarmat.
As they are about to leave, Inkarmat offers to answer Tsukishima’s question about his fiancee, but now thinking more clearly he tells her that there is no need. All this tells us, the reader is that he’s come to some sort of peace and understanding with his actions. This is good, but we still don’t know what he has found his calm with in regards to his questions about her fate.
As they ride off after waving goodbye to Huci, Tanigaki very shakily says how he feels about Huci and his connection with her. That he was saved by her again and that he’s always receiving her help, but his statement implies that he thinks he has never helped her back.
Inkarmat looks up at him softly, she’s blushing a little and there is a sparkle in her eye as she seems to think about what he’s said. Does Inkarmat think that Tanigaki saved her? That he doesn’t see his actions when he does help others? That he’s too hung up on owing Huci? I think here we see that Inkarmat is the more mature one again and that she will likely support him despite the fact that he really likes to make a mess of things even though he thinks his intentions are the best. I wonder since Tanigaki is just such a manly man that Noda wants him to be juxtaposed with strong women? Just throwing that out there.
The action then shifts to Sapporo with Kikuta and Usami on the search for our Jack the ripper convict. It is clear there is tension between these two men as Kikuta tells Usami to not do anything rash and that it is their job to just scout out the killer. As he’s demonstrated that he’s a clever one, he immediately wants them to change clothes to blend in with the civilians as they suspect that Hijikata’s entire group will be there and it would not be a fight that they could win. The more I hear from Kikuta the more of a similar vibe he gives off like Ogata. He thinks things through and is not impulsive or emotional when it comes to performing his duty.
As Kikuta and Usami walk right by Kirawus and Kadokura, the unlucky former prison guard officer finds a small coin on the ground blocking him from Usami’s line of sight. Usami then wonders if he did hear Kadokura . . . . but immediately writes it off as Usami is certain that Kadokura died in Abashiri.
Kirawus then comments that it must be a lucky day for Kadokura which is actually the truth. We all know that if Usami actually spotted him he’d immediately go after him and try to kill him again.
This missed connection ups the tension that their small scouting party will indeed cross paths with Hijikata’s and the convict.
Not only that but it is clear that Ogata is thinking in a very similar fashion to that of Kikuta. Ogata knows that the killer will go to the red light district and the police will also be looking into the case. Add onto that the fact that soldiers from his former division would be also there for “fun” likely means Tsurumi isn’t far behind.
Ogata then asks Hijikata if “you guys” dress up as peddlers again. This is interesting since when Hijikata did dress like that, it was when Shiraishi was captured by the 27th and and when Kiro was in the group while he was with Sugimoto, Asirpa and Ushiyama. I get the feeling that Ogata is making it very clear that he is not a part of Hijikata’s group while also teasing him a bit.
I’m personally dying for more Ogata action in these recent chapters, but I have to just accept this page. At least it is a good bang for your buck page as Ogata says a lot in those 3 speech bubbles.
What will be interesting is the fact that Kikuta and Ogata are thinking the same thing - as we know that they were both “Russian” kidnappers for Tsurumi in 1902 and realize they need to look for the convict discreetly.
But what I really think is the most important is that Ogata is making it abundantly clear that he’s only doing what serves his goal currently and that he is doing his own thing and that he’s confident enough to flat out tell Hijikata. He’s not one of his underlings, he’s not afraid of him, that he’s got his own thing to do. He’s also likely even more suspicious of Ariko knowing him and how Tsurumi operates.
The action then jumps to Asirpa, Sugimoto and Shiraishi in the Sorachi river valley.
They are doing some recon trying to find any people looking for gold dust and with unusual tattoos. Shiraishi is looking at the viewer - or maybe Vasily? I do find it interesting that Vasily is not in the picture. Or interesting is not the right word - I think is is important that again he’s not a part of their group unless Shiraishi is relying information to him?
The random Ainu man confirms that such a man has been seen and Sugimoto has his immediate murder eyes/scarf combo. Meanwhile Asirpa looks on at him rather coldly.
Sugimoto is more than ready to skin Boutarou and I just get the feeling that she’s ready to accept it as part and parcel of working with Sugimoto. . . .
The next page is a full page of Boutarou riding a horse holding a revolver looking dashing and sexy. it is clear he’s going to be both a charming and formidable convict.
Yet, this information is not the man who is being discussed. Instead, we are back to the idea of a peddler - that sells candy in a town. The last two pages have a very bizarre looking peddler who says that he’s selling candy. He looks like he’s giving candy to a kid but instead give him coal. The man is wearing a toque, has braided hair and a cloth over his face has he is laughing at the disappointed boy.
He then leads the disappointed boy off into the woods away from the mining town telling him he knows things much better than candy. And the chapter ends with the creepy man in a toque leading the boy out of town. Yay! Now we have another creepy man who isn’t our Jack the ripper nor our sexy Boutarou the pirate! Where is this going?
Overall, the second half of this chapter is a catch up/set up chapter. We know were everyone is and where they are going and who is going to encounter who in a matter of time.
Here are the most important parts of these two chapters.
1.) Tanigaki and Inkamat are out of the game for the time being. Yes, they are running off into hiding and for the time being they are out of the hunt. I suspect they will get involved again but not in the immediate future. I still have a gut feeling that Ogata will have to save Tanigaki - likely from Tsurumi.
2.) Showdown in Sapporo. Usami’s eagerness will likely clash with some of Hijikata’s group. Ogata and Kikuta are calling the same shots - will they meet and talk vs just shoot at each other? I have a feeling that these two groups will shift in the quest for the serial killer.
3.) Pirate hunting and a crazy peddler. Sugimoto and Asirpa are closing in on Boutarou. Is he independent of the crazy peddler or are they related? We know that he has men working for him that are somewhere. I’d guess he would start to build his faction to get involved in the group. I suspect that Vasily will cause some sort of issues, he’s no closer to finding Ogata who is in Sapporo.
4.) Tsurumi’s true motivations are revealed. The finger bones pretty much are the dead giveaway for Tsurumi’s motivations. They are linked to the death of Fina and Olga when he was a spy in Russia. As soon as everyone saw the finger bones, pretty much everyone I know went back to chapter 179. After Tsurumi held Olga he wrapped and laid her on Fina, who is missing a right pinky finger. And he then burnt down the photo studio as he leads town.
What is more interesting is how Tsurumi feels about this. I see several different possibilities.
i.) Tsurumi is guilty that it is his fault, he sent them away but they came back worried about him.
ii.) Tsurumi blames Wilk, Kiro and Sofia for what happened even though he assisted them.
iii.) Tsurumi blames the much larger system - the imperial Japanese government and a likely person who sold out his cover (someone in the 1st?) and Tsarist Russia making the partisans due to their poor treatment of the ethnic minorities in the far east.
Or is it all of these? I think we will need to see a bit more of his actions to get a good idea of what is driving him at heart.
5.) Koito finally grows up as a leader. Koito handles the Tanigaki-Tsukishima situation excellently. I really liked this part, he’s showing that he is not just some blind follower of Tsurumi and as it has been implied is an intelligent guy who has his own moral compass. He’s taking the time to think critically of things. Really hoping for him to talk to Ogata again.
That’s all I have for now.

PUZZLE OUT; A REFLECTION
“I embraced who I am and I don’t want to stop.” - Supergirl; Kara Zor-el
How do you define ‘YOU’? How hard can it be to be ‘YOU’? - these questions help us understand more of what may ourselves have to pop out. In the midst of the journey you have in life, there are certain areas that you question and that we are about to find out.
These past few weeks we’ve had our classes in our GE HUMS 101, we learned about talking and recognizing LIFE in different aspect and perspectives of philosophers and sociologists. We gained more knowledge about the SELF. So let me give you a little tour of what we discussed and so you can catch up.
On the first part of our tour, this is about SELF THROUGH PHILOSOPHER’S PERSPECTIVES. This topic involves different philosophers explaining what they think about the self’s essence that is present in us. As you can see, with these philosophers we learn and reflect each of their ideas about ourselves.
Just like our friend above this text, Socrates, one of the early philosophers, paved the way of questioning and discovering more about self. He introduced the SOCRATIC METHOD to allow human beings to gain more knowledge. Not just questioning, we also tend to observe ours. The self has levels that we already know and some that needs to be discovered. in our daily lives, we tend to ask ourselves who are we gonna be today or how can we behave with what’s gonna come. These components on this topic helps us recognize more and just like me, I just learned that when you intact all the philosopher’s ideas you can get that greater picture of yourself and could understand more.
So let’s say good bye for a little bit to Socrates and let me introduce you to some Sociologists whom discussed about SELF THROUGH SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES.
Society is a big influence to an individual. It can either demand, command or request. They tend to change behaviors with the people around you for acceptance and it will mirror yourself of what you’ve become with the influence of social norms. As I observed, people nowadays, mostly teens, are looking for acceptance within the society. they tend to change their self-identity for the sake of fame an acceptance within their peers. It’s not that bad we tend to change ourselves of what we feel and for the better.
For example, Hua Mulan - the Chinese lady whom applied for the Chinese army as a man to help her father and bring honor to her family. Mulan was never the perfect daughter but she tried to do everything her family requested so she could bring pride and honor to her family. However, she failed to accomplish the request and disappointed of what happened with her and the matchmaker. She was in awe when she knew that there was supposed to be one man that can represent their family to apply for the army. Her father was sick and she couldn’t stand it. She ran away with her horse and the guardian spirit that her ancestors gave her. Before she deployed herself, she cut her hair and wrapped her breast as if she was not a woman so that the army will accept her. She hid her true identity for months as Hua Ping, she trained and she felt she found her self by being who she is. Then until the end, she revealed herself to the people as a woman. At first, they wouldn’t accept a woman in the army as if it’s a crime. But then she truly recognized her potential and alongside everyone accepted her even her colleagues.
There is good and bad of the influence that society can bring but the important thing that we should know that we have to recognize of what is better for us and even healthier to what we bring and cultivate among others.
Let’s just leave Mulan right there and move on with our tremendous tour. Let’s go and talk about SELF AS EMBEDDED IN CULTURE.
Culture. Culture is one’s way of life. Just like religion, traditions and lifestyle. It’s like a pattern that we do with our lives that we believe and follow.
Like me, as a Pinay, I practice by saying ‘opo’ and ‘po’ to the elders, being hospitable to visitors, likes to party and gather and also we, pinoys, celebrate the longest Christmas vacation. This culture that we have that we share is the bondness and this allows us to identify of who we are. Similar to the phenomenal series Harry Potter, a ficitional story by J.K Rowling. The novels chronicle the lives of a young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry lived his life being a muggle (human) but everything changed on his 11th birthday. Harry went to the world of Witchcraft and Wizardry and learned different cultures and beliefs as a wizard. He shared the bond with his three friends and learned the meaning of magic and power.
I realized that culture is not the behavior itself but the bond and understanding that allows us to bond and share with different people to experience more. The shared culture you have is how you define yourself on how you deliver it and show it to others. Culture influenced us within our daily lives up until this century. This also bring us together as a nation through diversity.
So, carry on!
We are gonna talk about the PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE OF THE SELF.
The self has many facets that help make up integral parts of it, such as self-awareness, self-esteem, self-knowledge, and self-perception. In the basis of psychology, the mental state of the self allows you to think, act and evaluate. For me, the psychological perspective of the self is really important because it constructs the idea of one’s identity to achieve. For example, as we grow up we tend to observe our parents and analyze of what they are doing. Also, we tend to copy and idolize them of what they are doing.
On this lesson, we learned how to be aware with one’s self and also by understanding. Being influenced by the people around your environment makes yourself vulnerable and attached so we have to make sure we choose the right path we take. So thumbs up for that!
We quickly continue to the WESTERN AND EASTERN CONCEPT OF THE SELF.
Western people are ideally aware of themselves. They objectify themselves as INDIVIDUALS purely. They are autonomous. While, Eastern self is believing that there is no meaning of the self that is independent.
Both of them play important roles within the different sides of the world. I believe the Western Self’s single-mindedness can be a weakness and also a strength, not just in our daily routine but also in different aspects. Eastern Self within us helps us appreciate the togetherness of one’s community and by depending and helping. Maybe both of them, don’t go good together but I believe that each of them have strong perspectives within different circumstances.
Moving along...
Let’s talk about THE PHYSICAL SELF.
The physical self refers to the body. Both external and internal. It is the temple of what we desire. People nowadays tend to get insecure with their bodies, mostly girls. It’s hard to say that most of them feel pressured by what they see in magazines and even the social media empire. Social media is technically perceiving the perfect body image of a person should and will have. That’s why they tend to buy stuff to maintain their beauty and body forms.
I learned that self-esteem is really important even if you do not have the perfect body image. People tend to judge the other people’s body image and some of them end up being depressed. Yet, it is much more important to be beautiful in the inside
Being beautiful is not just by having a pretty face but also with a beautiful soul. Our forms do not measure the weight that social media carries. We do not have nothing to prove and no one to impress with. It’s the personality that counts! . The thing you have to prioritize is how you avoid to intoxicate your inner self. You have to smile, be thankful and optimistic, and have a healthy and good attitude.
So let’s give that a big round of applause, folks!
Let me tell you something that I learned about SEXUAL SELF.
Sexual self is not just what you think. Some people misunderstood these type of perspective just because it has the word, ‘SEX’, on it. Well, you’re wrong! So, let me clear things up. Sexual self is the totality of all sex characteristics, includes with the reproductive systems, different STDs, puberty, sexual arousal, etc. Sexual self invites us to learn more of what we have rather than we think. It tells us how our reproductive system works and changes throughout our entire life even on experiencing sexual arousal.
It also talks about different components of love; on how people exchange or make a bond with their shared feelings for one another. Also, the awareness of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
So, if you’re reading this blog, I would definitely give you a perfect example. Have you heard or watched the series Sex Education? Just let me know, okay?
I’m gonna give you a quick summary about the story. In reference with Google, High school student Otis may not have much experience in the lovemaking department, but he gets good guidance on the topic in his personal sex ed course -- living with his mother, Jean, who is a sex therapist. Being surrounded by manuals, videos and tediously open conversations about sex, Otis has become a reluctant expert on the subject. When his classmates learn about his home life, Otis decides to use his insider knowledge to improve his status at school, so he teams with whip-smart bad girl Maeve to set up an underground sex therapy clinic to deal with their classmates' problems. But through his analysis of teenage sexuality, Otis realizes that he may need some therapy of his own.
This story is pretty nice with the topic about the sexual self, it allows teens to be more aware of what they do. Sexual self is really an important role to an individual, it helps to build a wall of self-awareness since teens nowadays are being pressured of what they see and also they tend to give there all just to be loved then some of them lead to teenage pregnancy/pre-marital sex and others may lead to death due to complication with some STDs.
Some are confused of what they feel and who they feel like being to be. It’s better to embrace who you really are and going out of your closet rather than being who they don’t want to be.
I just want to say and reflect that this generation that we have is unstoppable but it can yet be controlled. We can help them to educate themselves properly and being more aware of these things within the areas of their sexual self because it’s better to be safe than be sorry.
Moving on, let’s talk about the MATERIAL SELF.
The material self is the manifestation of one’s identity through his/her possessions. It can be their house, car, pet, and even clothes that you wear. They feel sentimental to a specific value. There is nothing wrong whether you define yourself from the the things you buy, you always have to make sure that you won’t lose yourself, even your credit card.
Material possession can be reflection of you hardwork (Belk,1988). It can also affect your personality and the way you see yourself. There are some people who get sick, literally sick, from being a compulsive/impulsive buyer. It could cause depression, anxiety and even death. Being satisfied with things is not a problem but we have to make sure that we do need it and not just go hoarding stuffs. So, one of the best Confessions of a Shopaholic shopping tips is to think first. Before buying anything, ask yourself a series of questions: Will I wear/use this more than once? Is this purchase going to affect me in a good way? Does this item match other ones in my closet?
For me, being materialistic also has it’s negative effects, being boastful and also decreasing of the budget that you have. People to tend to be jealous with others of what they have because merely the mass or social media manipulates each individual’s mind, mostly females. People measure you things for you to be accepted by them. In the bright side, people tend to measure success also through the amount of things they possess because that individual is seeking high level of achievement or in Layman’s terms - HE DESERVES HIS HARD WORK AND SATISFACTION. Just like by buying a phone with the money you earned from your first ever salary. Materialism has its ups and downs, as long as it doesn’t destroy the your identity and your pockets.
In the other hand, SPIRITUAL SELF.
Spiritual self is the inner essence of your life force.
Spirituality generally refers to the meaning and purpose of one’s life. Spirituality talks about worship, religion and act of faith. It doesn’t mean that we do have different beliefs and religion that doesn’t mean that we are different from each other. We strive, we suffer and we succeed. All of us experience the same virtue of life and it is in us on how we try to make it worth and different.
Spirituality also talks about logotheraphy - which is the pursuit of human existence as on man’s search for reflection. It is also a method that psychiatrists use to help their patients reconnects with themselves and stop being isolated with depression and anxiety.
I believe and I doubt; everyday we do not experience SUCCESS, VALUE, AND SUFFER. Life is not sweet if it’s not a roller coaster full of surprises and life is simple but not easy. Whenever we feel down, we come back and pray to our life force. We make ourselves feel optimism and faith to get back to ou feet. We reflect and meditate of things that makes us happy and worthy. No matter how hard and destructive life can be, you will never forget what is your true purpose in this world and we should go back to grounded in soil and fulfill.
I’m gonna give you a quick overview about the POLITICAL SELF
Political self begins defining politics. Politics exists in all human societies. It can be in school, family and also churches. Popularly visible in governments. This helps to be more focused and considerate with your knowledge and responsibilities. This will help the self to maintain an environment where people can participate and learn about dominance, freedom and rights.
As a democratic country, we have the right to vote. This resembles the importance of having human rights and free will.
I learned that we should know what is right from wrong about this. We can also be leaders and followers in our own way. People have power in their palms and also in their voices. I believe that the political self can provide the cultivation of individuals’ decision makings and also about their rights not being deprived.
Lastly, DIGITAL SELF.
Technology is fantastic. We send emails, watch movies online and just even use our phones to order food without going to the restaurant. Isn’t that amazing?
Digital technology is at the peak of our horizon. Technology influences the quality of life and the ways people act and interact. Technology is everywhere, we sleep with it and we even go to work with it. The whole world revolves around digital. But how does this affect ourselves?
People, mainly teens, are so obsessed with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat). Digital self allows you to express or share yourselves through the internet. People tend to be more interested having ‘hearts’ and ‘likes’ rather than loving themselves. They depend of what people might say and to impress to get their social approval. As a matter of fact, you can also gain money with these ‘likes’ and ‘subscribers’ you have just like on Youtube. Take Cong TV as an example.
It may also change your life in a good or bad way. You’re taking all the risk for it. Just like the movie, Nerve, where this young girl, Vee decides to join Nerve, a popular online game that challenges players to accept a series of dares. It's not long before the adrenaline-fueled competition requires her to perform increasingly dangerous stunts. When Nerve begins to take a sinister turn, Vee finds herself in a high-stakes finale that will ultimately determine her entire future.
Another one is Xander Ford - keeps on being bashed just because people see him as senseless and has a horrible attitude. However, this may lead to social suicide. People being rejected and being embarrassed then end up getting depressed.
I do agree that digital technology is pretty amazing but it can hardly be forgiving.
Like what I said, Digital technology has it’s side effects, you can literally be hacked and also been taken hostage for SOCIAL IDENTITY THEFT or FRAUD. Criminals are also in the deepest areas in the internet.
So we have to make sure of what we put on social media and even in the internet and the internet does not measure who we are and how we are loved. They even see it as a wasteland where people shed their tears and not to mention it’s also where we can store our memories for a lifetime. We always have to remember that we should THINK BEFORE WE CLICK
I think that sums up our tour. Before I end this blog, as you can see I am very fond of Supergirl. She strives her way out of the shadows just to know what is her purpose and to know more what she can do just by understanding herself. I just want to let you know that it is really hard to understand ourselves. We keep on trying to ask the same question over and over again.
People cannot define ‘YOU’. You are the only one who can define yourself.
This subject made me realize that I am greater that who I knew I could be. That is it. No amount of words how grateful I am to realize that it is really important to understand yourself and to figure out your purpose in life. In addition, this subject helped me thought that knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom and mastering yourself is the power and strength. You have nothing to prove and no one to impress with.
Sometimes understanding yourself is pretty tough but when you reflect and get all the pieces together. As long as you have hope and faith within yourself, I’m pretty sure you’re gonna know what purpose in life that you have and so that you can influence others through a lighter path.

A Second Decade of Movies
Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the network’s existence. Now, here’s part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in “The Freshman.” My favorite movie from the last decade? “The Tree of Life.”
But I began the 2010s with James Cameron’s mega-hit “Avatar.” I’ll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say there’s little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.
At any rate, enjoy the list below! If a title is hotlinked, it will take you to an essay, interview, or related coverage on the film by yours truly.

Sauna Magick 101
Nordic people, it's time to shine! As a proud Finn I decided it would be the best to tell you about saunas (also called bastu by Swedes but sauna is the right name, fight me ) .
When it comes to magick that involves whisks and messy healing methods, use your own Sauna and always clean up after yourself!
About Saunas
Nordic saunas were invented by the Finnish people. (The Mayas did also have their own ones!)
The first saunas (built in 1500-900 BCE) were often little cottage-like buildings with a fireplace with stones in it. That fireplace thingy has now developed into a sauna stove or a kiuas, as we like to call it.
Us Finns have this saying that "If Booze, Tar and Sauna aren't doing any help, the illness is going to make you die." This tells a lot about our culture. Sauna was a place for healing - for example bloodletting, cupping therapy and massages were often done in saunas. People gave birth in saunas as well as dead people were gaven a last washing there.
The old folk of the North believed in elves. Almost every single building a person has has it's own elf. Sauna elves were often greeted by a spell, often a simple "Good evening!" or saying it out loud that water and the steam were important in healing worked.
The heat often bathed in is often something between 70C-90C (158-194F) . The sauna users are naked the whole time. An old tradition of whipping yourself ( or your friends and family) with a sauna whisk remains. It can be weird when I tell you to tie a couple of sticks together and hit yourself with them, but what if I told you that it helps your body? Oh, speaking of which...
Sauna Whisks
The essential oils which birch leaves have help you with cleansing your body and reducing pain. Whisking yourself helps you with getting rid of dead skin and it does wonders to your circulation of blood and metabolism. Birch is associated with spiritual cleansing as well!
Magically making a Sauna Whisk
The most popular material for sauna whisks are Birch twigs, though - let me tell you - you can also use Rowan or even Juniper ( if you only simmer the juniper branches in boiling water for a while.) . For a nice smell and magical properties, you can of course add a little bit of lavender or a blackberry branch.
The best time for gathering the twigs are in June when the leaves are young and soft. Ask the trees ( and the landowners) a permission to take branches. You need a good 30-40 branches.
Bless the branches in a simple ritual.
Clean the branches off some of the leaves, so that you make a handle that is pleasant to hold.
Gather the branches together and make sure that the longest ones are in the middle.
Tie the branches together and place them in a water pot in the sauna waiting for you to use them.
Using a Sauna Whisk
If you have an intent, you can state it when you're in the sauna. Use a spell like this, for example:
"With the power of blessed leaves,
I shall be in perfect ease.
When branches meet the body of mine,
I shall be purified.
Negative energy, I banish thee,
it harms none, so mote it be. "
Whip yourself thoroughly from your shoulders to your toe. Enjoy the smell of your whisk and feel it filling the sauna.
Clean the sauna after a whisking ritual.
Lotions and Essential Oils
Saunas are great for lotions and oils! It is popular to use honey on your skin in saunas, as well.
Using Sauna Oils and Aromas
I would recommend that you use specific sauna oils in saunas instead of just essential oils. Do your research about the oils you're using and how they react to the heat!
Choose the right oil that calls for you. Often these oils are mixed in the water you throw on the sauna stove. Remember that these bottles can get very hot if you store them in Saunas!
When used correctly, the heat of the sauna combined with an amazing aroma can be a wonderful and powerful healing experience.
Applying Lotions
I like to do my skin care when I'm having a sauna night! Saunas are great for face masks or peeling creams etc. and I personally love to use sauna honey on my skin! Honey makes your spells more powerful and when you use scented honey, it can bring things for your life (for example, rose honey is the honey of love)
Saunas give your skin care items some time to take effect, and I like to think that the heat helps them as well.
Washing yourself magically
In the modern times, there are often showers near the saunas so you don't have to mix your own washing waters. However, while visiting summer houses or just the saunas of your backyard, you might not be given that kind of luxury and you have to mix the waters traditionally.
If you have to use the water-in-bucket method, I recommend to put a couple of herbs there. It isn't probably the best idea to put essential oils, as they can be harmful to your eyes etc.
Water with rosemary in it is also helpful in cleansing you both physically and magically.
Make a special washing water! Put water, herbs, honey, soap and some coconut oil on a washing basin and clean your body with it before you use normal water to wash it off.
Bless your water!
Visualize all of the negative energy going down the drain as you wash yourself
Other Fun Tips
Who said you couldn't use candles? Just make sure you have a small plate where you place the candle. Be aware of safety.
Go swimming in between of your sauna sessions!
If it's winter and you're feeling brave, you can go and roll in the snow!
Give an offering to your sauna elf, like a candle, food, money or liquor!

The Tides: Riding the Ups and Downs on the Oregon Coast Trail
By Henley Phillips
I’m in a Safeway parking lot in Lincoln City trying to set a new supported fastest known time on the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT). I didn’t plan to quit when I sat down, but the combination of chair and lapful of Dairy Queen is drawing me down into a comfortable state that I haven’t felt in 139 miles. I do some quick math for the next section - 4 mile wrong turn earlier in the day, 270 miles left to go, 18 miles still left for the day, it’s 5PM, I’ve eaten all the chicken strips, no way I can do this. ** **
Am I quitting?
So far I‘ve covered the miles out of pure excitement and adrenaline, but now I feel well out of my league. I decided to do this just 6 weeks ago. My longest run was only 32 miles; the biggest week a mere 42. This was just to get a taste of what this FKT world is all about. I get it. It’s hard. I don’t want hard. I want a relaxed summer with my wife on the Oregon coast. 139 miles is pretty damn good.
Am I quitting? I think so.
When you attempt something like a fastest known time, your mind is constantly calculating the gains and losses of the experience to regulate and preserve your physical well-being. In fact our brains work in this mode every day with almost every task. It’s basic survival wherein your mind and body work to maintain a safe equilibrium of pleasure and pain. I think it’s fair to say for most of us, myself included, we do a good job of making sure the scales tip to the side of pleasure more often than not.
On my first day of the trail I ran in a state of almost pure bliss for 14 hours. The northern terminus of the OCT was windy and cold that morning, the ocean and sky a blur of blue and gray with waves crashing somewhere unseen. The trail had it all that first day - serene beach running all to myself, road miles through Seaside with its tourist trinket shops, enchanting singletrack over Tillamook Head and Cape Falcon, and then the quiet miles of a sleepy highway 101 at the end of the day. That night we stealth camped at the baseball fields in Nehalem. My wife made beef stir fry for dinner. I inhaled it, scrubbed my legs in a community faucet and went to bed like nothing happened, 52 miles later. Pure pleasure.
Day two. Katie asks how I feel first thing.
“Everything... feels intact.” I do a stupid dance to show it’s true.
The OCT is unique for two reasons - towns and trails. It’s less of a wilderness route like the word trail conjures up, so towns and resupply come easy. You also have to time the beach hiking just right or else you’ll be caught in high tide with no route off the beach or left with an unexpected road walk. Today the goal is to hit one of the main estuaries at low tide to avoid a 4-5 mile road detour.
Near the end of the day, trudging up Cape Lookout and nearing a cumulative 100 miles, my mind begins that gain vs. loss calculation - pain developing in my feet and knees, hips tight, stomach still good but then there’s the hamstring. I topped the climb as the sun was setting, and the thrill of making the estuary crossing at night took over. Headlamp, food, layers and a towel in case I had to swim the crossing. I dropped down to Sand Beach and covered the 4 miles to the estuary outlet under a sliver of moon and the beach to myself.
I sensed the outlet before I could confirm it. In the pitch black of 10:30PM, my headlamp beam was simply swallowed up by the ocean to my right and the now empty space of the estuary void to my left. No low-lying beach topography to bounce light or give perspective. Deep black on either side and moving water underfoot.
The water quickly rose to my chest on the first try, and I half-panicked and almost threw myself into the flow to swim across, dry clothes be damned. Luckily I took a quick glance across and saw a high, steep bank on the other side, which meant deep water and no easy way up. Trying again further up the estuary, there was no steep bank; in fact, there was nothing at all, which I chanced to mean shallow water rather than endless water.
The water is cold, up to my chest halfway across, but I feel in control, safe. Without thinking, however, I start chanting ‘please’ out loud. Please don’t let me have to backtrack now. Please don’t sweep me out into the dark ocean. Please let there be a safe way out of this channel. Finally my foot hits the bottom a little sooner, the water drops to my stomach, and I spot a level bank to exit the current. I let out an animal sound of satisfaction and relief but immediately realize I’ve crossed too high. Now I have a stagnant tidal lagoon to cross, the remnants of the estuary not carried out at low tide.
My phone battery is very low, so I forgo using Gaia to navigate and instead head towards where I think the beach should be, which is the other side of this lagoon. Compared to the relatively clear water of the first crossing, this stuff is a muck of seagrass and shoe-sucking sludge. I can’t see the bottom and have no way of judging depth. As I whip my headlamp around in all directions, tens of little fish jump silver streaks out of the water. Then I notice palm-sized crabs floating in the tops of the seagrass, right at chest level. Do crabs bite humans?
Twenty minutes later I’m back on the beach and running the last two miles to where Katie is waiting. The adrenaline quickly fades. I’m ice cold, and all the pain starts welling up after a day of 58 miles.
In anticipation of the building fatigue and inevitable pain, I quit on day three at the Lincoln City Safeway after a measly 28 miles. The third day was going to be tough, I knew, but my mental focus had already shifted from enjoying the Oregon coast to desperately calculating my next rest and meetup with Katie. I ended the tracking on my inReach and sent a message to my family letting them know I had quit, and to my surprise, I felt a choking, welling tightness in my chest and throat.
“I think I’m crying about this,” I told Katie.
Sleep came quickly that night, and I went to bed without dinner. We drove further south down the coast to where I was supposed to have ended my day on foot, tucked the van into a side road, and that was the end of my FKT.
In the morning I woke feeling better than expected. I stretched and jogged a little and figured I should be feeling a lot worse if I’m going to quit. We had a leisurely morning together drinking coffee with a quintessential Oregon coast view. Turns out the record was still doable, and my one-woman crew was still down to keep going.
I devoured miles for the next five days - 44, 52, 50, 50, 53 and then a casual 20 on the last day into Crissy Field and the California border. 408 miles in 8 days 5 hours 2 minutes.
I had assumed the most critical moments of a fastest known time attempt would be the cumulative minutes lost or gained during breaks, or, specifically for the Oregon Coast Trail, hitting the river outlets and tides at just the right time. Turns out the key decision for me was quitting on the third day when I thought that I’d had enough.
The important thing about quitting is that it immediately calls into question your tenacity. The moments directly after you pull the plug on something can be so illuminating and provide deep-gut feedback on the decision. In the past several years the concept of vulnerability has become quite popular, at times creating a culture and mindset of easy outs. Quitting has been flipped and is now strong, follow-through less important and rephrased as stubbornness. What’s worrisome to me about quitting is that the immediacy of relief can sometimes overshadow those moments of truer clarity directly after. Surely there are moments when quitting is the prudent, safe decision, but how often is this truly the case? Or is it more likely that your resilience, grit and ruggedness are simply being called into question?
Don’t hit the damn button. Keep going.

Join Taja Lindley on an Artist Talk and Film Screening!
Can we grow gardens out of graves? How can we recycle the energy of protest, rage and grief into creating a world where indeed Black Lives Matter? What is the role of memory in our movement building work? And who will be responsible for this labor? These are the questions that haunt the work of visual and performance artist Taja Lindley.
As a memory worker, Lindley explores what has been abandoned, erased, silenced or distorted in our individual and collective consciousness. During her artist talk, she will screen her short film “This Ain’t A Eulogy: A Ritual for Re-Membering” and will discuss her most recent projects: “The Bag Lady Manifesta” and the "Birth Justice Podcast NYC." There will be time for community conversation and Q&A.
Through iterative and interdisciplinary practices, Taja Lindley creates socially engaged artwork that transforms audiences, shifts culture, and moves people to action. Since 2014 she has developed a body of work recycling and repurposing discarded materials. Her 2017 residency at Dixon Place Theater culminated in the world premiere of her one-woman show "The Bag Lady Manifesta" and it has been presented at museums, theaters, and universities nationwide. Her films and installations have been featured at Brooklyn Museum; the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Carver Museum in Austin, Texas; the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, California; and more.
In addition to being an artist, Lindley is actively engaged in social movements as a writer, consultant, and facilitator. For over a decade she has worked with non-profits, research institutes and government on policies and programming that impact women and girls, communities of color, low/no/fixed-income families, queer people, youth, and immigrants. Most recently, she served as a Sexual and Reproductive Justice Consultant at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, co-facilitating a community driven process that created The New York City Standards for Respectful Care at Birth. She is a 2019 NYC Public Artist in Residence and a 2020 A Blade of Grass Fellow. TajaLindley.com

Brother(hood) Dance!
January 30th - 5:00pm-6:00pm
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUocOqvrTMuEtaEM6QX8kLd9ItaiUregeQP
Brother(hood) Dance! will offer a movement experience that engages your full sense of awareness and connectedness to past present and future. We will work through African Diasporic techniques to ground and be rooted.
Brother(hood) Dance! is an interdisciplinary duo that seeks to inform its audiences on the socio-political and environmental injustices from a global perspective, bringing clarity to the same-gender-loving African-American experience in the 21st century. Brother(hood) Dance! was formed in April 2014 as a duo that research, create and perform dances of freedom by Orlando Zane Hunter, Jr. and Ricarrdo Valentine. We have performed our works at FiveMyles, Center for Performance Research, B.A.A.D! (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance), VCU-The Grace Street Theater, DraftWork at St. Marks Church, JACK, Movement Research at Judson Church, Colby College, Denmark Arts Center and other venues.
As a collective, our work demonstrates how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of global cultural interaction over the latter half of the twentieth century. It challenges the binaries we continually reconstruct between Self and Other, between our own ‘cannibal’ and ‘civilized’ selves. By rejecting an objective truth and global cultural narratives, we find that movement reveals an inherent awkwardness, a humor that echoes our own vulnerabilities. Brother(hood) Dance! considers movement as a metaphor for the ever-seeking man who experiences a continuous loss. Brother(hood) Dance!'s work urge us to renegotiate performance as being part of a reactive or – at times – autistic medium, commenting on oppressing themes in our contemporary society.

101 Fun Things to do in Toronto in the Summer
The weather is lastly starting to get warm, and also I could not be much more ecstatic concerning all the enjoyable points to do in Toronto this summer!
After what felt like a nonstop wintertime followed by a wet springtime, it's risk-free to claim Torontonians are looking forward to the next couple of months of sunshine.
Fun Outside Activities to do in Toronto This Summer season
It's not just a concrete jungle, Toronto has lots of enjoyable exterior activities to do in the summer season
1. See the Toronto Islands. My preferred place to be in the summer, the Toronto Islands are the best area to escape the city warmth. To reach the islands, capture the 13-minute ferryboat from the Jack Layton Ferryboat Terminal at the foot of Bay St. and Queens Caye. Conversely, you can take a 'Tiki Taxi" from Queens Quay and also Spadina for $10. This is a fun method to get to the islands. They are small watercrafts that are 'tiki' themed, playing Caribbean motivated songs along the way.
There are stunning beaches to kick back on the islands, including a clothing-optional beach at Hanlan's Factor. A bike is an ideal method to get around the islands. You can rent them from bike share terminals in the city and bring it with you on the ferry, or you can sign up with a led Toronto islands bike excursion.
2. Take in the city sky line from a boat. A perfect method to invest a summer season night in Toronto is on the harbor. Keep an eye out for Sector evening occasions, where you can cruise on the lake for free. It's a blast!

4. Stroll via a ravine. You don't need to go away from the city roads to enter nature. Toronto is honored with a huge gorge system, supplying locals an opportunity a retreat from metropolitan settlement. Some of my preferred gorge strolls consist of the Humber Valley and Crothers Woods.
5. Browse through Scarborough bluffs. This stunning cliff extends 15km across Scarborough, standing above Lake Ontario. You can see from above, but as the bluffs are delicate, the city has placed limits on how close you can get to the side. Rather, appreciate the bluffs from listed below on the beach.
6. Walk along the CN Tower. If you intend to include some excitement to your summer season, consider doing the Edgewalk along the CN tower. This remarkable Canadian site used to be the largest free-standing tower in the world. Talk about an adrenaline thrill!
