rocketeer | a. warlock
description. a peek into your budding relationship with adam warlock, soundtracked by the music that follows you through your life
includes. straight fluff that's it, some references to tunes
a/n: playing around with adam as a character .. reader implied to be from earth, also this was a blurb but its long enough to be a mini fic so ,,, that's what it is now. also title is a reference to rocket tehe
word count: 1.2k+
mild gotg3 spoilers!!!
you meet him when rocket's 2000s playlist is playing.
there a general joy spread all across knowhere, each and every being there filled with the adrenaline of the guardians surviving, and saving others along the way, once again. everyone's doing something; dancing, crying, rejoicing, picking up pieces. everyone except him.
he sits on a set of stairs that you know has been coated with bile too many times. he's alone, wrapped in an insulated blanket, and staring at everyone with a sense of longing. your rhythmic steps falter, as does your smile, and your head tilts.
your friend asks what's wrong, you point him out, and his mind is lightyears away because he doesn't notice the obvious gawking from three sets (the extra set your friend has will always be a little off putting for you) of curious eyes. he doesn't notice anything until you're standing above him.
"hi," your wave is just a flare of your hand, small, gentle, as is your smile. his eyes snap up to look at you, wide and yellow and intriguing. it takes him a second but he speaks, although it's quiet and a little hard to hear over florence and the machine.
"salutations."
the formality of it makes your smile widen. "d'you mind if i sit?" you point to the empty space next to him, his gaze following your gesture, and then he's looking back at you with furrowed eyebrows.
"why?"
you shrug, suddenly feeling a little silly, but you suck the feeling down with a large gulp of air. "just cause you seemed a little lonely. loneliness isn't really a thing here on knowhere."
his yellow eyes seem to light up at that. "really?"
not exactly, but you still nod. "really."
he scoots over a smidge to make room for you, even though there's more than enough, and you sit beside him, choosing to ignore the lingering stench of alcohol-induced barf. it's silent for a second, dog days are over ends and seven nation army begins, and then he speaks again.
"i'm adam."
you introduce yourself, starting to notice the way his foot taps along to the bass line. you nod towards the small movement. "you like this sort of music?"
when he shrugs, you can feel the blanket move against your arm and you hadn't realized you two were sitting that close beforehand.
"i don't really know much about music."
"yeah, that'll change here on knowhere, too."
you get closer while rocket is in a 90s kick. there's destiny's child, red hot chili peppers, loads of nirvana, and blur to soundtrack the timidity in the beginning. small "hello"s shared in passing, glances that turn into staring whenever the other isn't looking. talks about meaningless things that are happening on knowhere, just as an excuse to talk to each other at all.
your relationship (lack thereof) with adam feels reminiscent on those movies you would watch back home, telling stories of a boy next door and a girl next door and a painfully slow romance filled with moments that you used to wish would just lead into the big thing.
before he leaves, quill gives you a final word of advice. "stop dancing around it. go for it."
you follow his eye line to adam, who's holding a very confusing looking conversation with one of the kids, and then you look at quill, who's staring down at you like an older, slightly wiser, brother.
"okay?"
"yeah. okay."
he opens up when his favorites are playing. you're teasing him, asking if he finally has artists, genres, songs, anything that he likes. he smiles brightly, like he's been waiting to share this information, and nods eagerly.
"let me show you." the ipod he'd acquired is thrust into your hands and then one end of the flimsy earphones after it. you slip the bud in, listening to the clicks of adam searching for what he wants to show you, and the it starts.
you vaguely recognize it as something that quill passed down to rocket, who tried to pass it down to you, but you don't know it well enough to predict the lyrics before they happen.
the other headphone is placed in one of adam's ears, and he hums to the song. you feel his gaze on yours, waiting for your reaction, and you look to him and smile.
"yeah?" he asks, clearly wanting to know what you thought about it.
"yeah. it's good!"
"right!" and he continues to hum along to the song, clearly wanting to sing it at the top of his lungs and dance around to the beat. the image of what that would look like, of how he would ask you to join in, takes over your mind and adam's voice breaks you from your thought.
"i have just one question though."
"hm?"
"what's disney world?"
and now it's time for your eyes to widen and for you to gasp. you launch into descriptions of 'the happiest place on earth', having to will yourself from telling the entire backstory of the creator and the mystery that exists from his extremely known life. adam seems confused, interested, and like he longs for something like that.
"d'you think we could visit disney world one day?" the odds aren't the best, but you shrug, nod, let the corner of your mouth turn down just a little.
"yeah, maybe."
another solo song by adrian belew starts and then adam tells you about his home, and the sovereign, and his mother. you listen, lowering the volume so you can hear him clearly, and you're there for when tears start to glide down his face.
things change whenever 80s pop is playing.
kraglin had taken over rocket's ipod for the day, resulting in almost every hit from the 80s to play during the entire day.
you'd sung along to most songs, wishing you'd seen adam to tell him about each artist that played. but he'd been gone, not seen by anyone, and you assumed that he'd gone on a mission or something of the sort.
it's late, you're snuggled in bed, the music outside has come to an end but you have your own headphones in to continue listening. wham! plays when there's a knock on your door and you pull down the headphones, lowering george's singing, to open it.
adam stands on the other side, dressed as casual as you've seen him, and his hair sticking up in different places as if he's been messing with it for a while. he looks distressed, and distracted, until you say his name.
"adam? what's wrong?"
and then his large hands are delicately holding your cheeks and his lips are pressed to yours. he freezes with the initial contact, most likely due to a mix of inexperience and shock, but then you start to slowly move your lips against his and he takes the hint to follow your lead. your hands pull at his shirt, urging him to come into your room, and he does as told, kicking the door closed behind him with his foot, giving you a surface that doesn't imply too much to push your back against.
that night, the entire first two albums from wham! play from your headphones while adam kisses you, leaving you to giddily listen to last christmas when you bid him goodbye, his lips a little swollen and a darker hue to his golden cheeks.

The Piano Man (Rhett Abbott x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: You and Rhett discover that Royal has a serious hidden talent when your little boy asks him to teach him something one day
Tagging: @floydsmuse
"Alright son, that's enough of that," Royal said, dusting the wood shavings off the piece he and Rhett had been working on.
Rhett blew away some of the wood shavings and agreed. Any more work and the piece just wouldn't look right. "Feels like this is taking forever," he yawned.
"I know, I know," Royal told him. "But whatever can help bring in some extra cash we'll take it. You teaching next week?"
"Three days a week at the Amelia County Steiner school that the kids go to," Rhett answered. "Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays."
Royal was relieved. Ever since the woodworking teacher had retired, he had wondered if he should take the job, but the ranch desperately needed running and with the new hands having been hired, it had doubled the work. Brian O'Dowd had proven himself to be an excellent worker, but having done a stint in jail had Royal and Russ Redwood keeping a close eye on him just in case he had gotten in trouble again.
The two of them worked away at the wood, the radio playing on the shelf above Royal's tool bench and the smell of freshly carved woods filling the entire room. The door to the woodshop creaked open and in came Tanner in his little boots, black cowboy hat and his denim jacket that Rhett had gotten him and his twin brother at a ride two weeks before.
"Papa?" he chirped, tugging at Royal's jacket sleeve. "You come play with me?"
"We'll come play in a minute bud," Royal told him. "Daddy and I have to finish something up, but we'll come once we're done."
"Ok," Tanner chirped.
Royal lifted his grandson up off the ground and seated himself on the tool-bench, letting him play with a few of the little wood blocks that he and Rhett had made for him and Tatum to play with.
"Where's Nana bud?" Royal asked him, marking the corner of the wood with a pencil.
"Nana went to Miss Sawah's," Tanner chirped.
Rhett tried to fight back the grin that was beginning to form on his face. Both Tatum and Tanner still had trouble pronouncing their Rs an Ls which their teachers thought was the cutest thing in the world.
As soon as they were both done, Rhett and Royal led him out of the woodshop and closed it up for the day, eager to get back into the warm house. February was always a tough month for Wabang's residents, with spring being around the bend but with winter still clinging on with its death throes.
"Still lesson planning sweetheart?" Rhett asked, sticking his boots on the hard plastic mat near the door.
"Yep and I'm gonna take a break in two minutes," you chuckled. "Block rotations suck no matter how you look at it."
"What is it this time?" he asked.
"Ancient Persia," you yawned. "We start Ancient Greece in two weeks. Greek Games are in May."
Rhett made a face. He loved hearing about your students and the lessons you got to do in school but he had also remembered how exhausted you felt when lesson planning. Thank God you had a mentor like Betsy Livingston, otherwise you would be lost.
"Alright bud, whatcha wanna do?" Royal asked him.
"Can you teach me to pay piano?" Tanner asked him.
"Sure, c'mere," Royal answered.
You and Rhett were a little surprised as the two of them sat on the little bench in front of the piano. "I wan' you to pay a song fist," Tanner told him.
"I want you to play a song first......?" Royal reminded him.
"Peas?"
"Ya'll got it bud," Royal said as Tanner hi-fived his grandfather. "Rhett, can ya'll hand me the book on the coffee table?"
You and Rhett dug through the notebooks, papers and pencils you needed for your main lesson plans when he found the old, dusty book that looked like it hadn't been touched in a while. "The complete book of movie soundtracks for piano players," Rhett read aloud. "Didn't even realize we had this."
Royal didn't say much as he opened it up and cracked his knuckles. Tanner watched his grandfather as his rough, calloused hands began playing away at the keys, hitting almost every note perfectly. It wasn't long before you and Rhett recognized right away what the piece was.
"Is that.......?" you asked.
"I think so," Rhett answered. "Dad is that the theme to Forest Gump?"
"None other," Royal chuckled.
Tanner kicked his little legs and giggled when Royal had finished. "Can you do anuver?" Tanner asked. "Peas?"
Royal gladly obliged, switching the page. As he began playing, you and Rhett once again, recognized what it was, the piece having played every year in the general store around Halloween.
"Das Hawwy Potter!!!" Tanner chirped excitedly.
Royal laughed as he finished off the last note. You and Rhett were hardly able to control the grins on your faces.
You both listened with awe as Tanner kept asking Royal to play more and each time, you and Rhett were surprised by how well Royal could play. He played "Red Warrior" from The Last Samurai, "May It Be" from Lord Of The Rings, "Now We Are Free" from Gladiator and "Tennessee" from Pearl Harbor. Yet you and Rhett were not prepared in the least when he played "Oogway Ascends". It was even more beautiful that you had remembered the first time you had heard it, watching it with the kids one night, the memories of the absent minded master from Kung Fu Panda, still fresh.
"One more Papa, one more," Tanner begged.
"Tanner c'mon, we've gotta take a break," Rhett chuckled.
"Nah Rhett, don't worry about it, he's havin fun," Royal said with a wave of his hand. "Your Ma's gonna be home with Tatum any minute so we might as well enjoy it while it lasts."
You and Rhett couldn't help but smile. If Royal didn't mind, then so be it.
When Royal began to play the next song, you didn't recognize it at first until he really began to get into it, your jaws nearly dropping. It wasn't in the book as far as you knew, but then again, Royal hadn't ever been known for doing anything by the book.
"Rhett is that......?"
Rhett laughed and pulled you close, kissing your forehead. "Fireflies" by Owl City had been a song that had played on your first date and one that you and Rhett enjoyed immensely. You and Rhett sang along to the words as Royal played and when he was done, the look on your faces had been enough.
And every day since then, when he had the time, Royal would sit with Tanner at the piano bench, teaching him little by little how to play.

My favorites of 2023
I wanted to make little wrap up of 2023, so here are my favorite movies and performances from 2023
Top Five Favorite movies
#5 The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snake - dir. Francis Lawrence
Tumblr media
I am a YA/dystopian boy through and through. I thought this was a very faithful adaptation and very visually stunning. The performances were all great and I just really liked it. However, I had my problems with the book itself and I felt the movie didn't do a great job truly villainizing Snow (I found him too likable until like the end of the film) All in all though a fun watch.
#4 Saltburn- Dir. Emerald Fennell
Tumblr media
If there's one thing I'm gonna do on this account, It's support a boy's wrongs. This movie has so many visual details and story details, it truly blows my mind. The soundtrack? Banger after banger. I'd never heard Murder on The Dance Floor before this movie but now I want to dance around a mansion to it. The cast? I mean just look at them. I do think occasionally this movie occasionally felt like it was just being shocking for shocking's sake and I got a little tired of it.
#3 Spiderman: Across The Spider-Verse- Dir. Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson, and Joaquim Dos Santos
Tumblr media
I love art. There's no other way to say it. I am in love with creativity. The amount of details that are in this movie are so utterly mind blowing that every time I read about a new one, I feel like I have to rewatch this movie. The first Spider-verse film is an absolute masterpiece and this movie was not about to disappoint it. From the voice performances to the bleeding-water color, to animating on every other frame, this movie just had me floored. I hope it wins an Oscar for best animated feature or I'm throwing shit. I do want the second part before I fully judge the story but so far I think this is one of the best superhero stories in a while
#2 Barbie- Dir Greta Gerwig
Tumblr media
I have never cried harder to a Nikki Minaj song. But actually, this movie made me fall in love with the simple act of being alive. It's a movie about a doll and yet its about enjoying life and growing up and how everything's so messy and it's so beautiful and we're so beautiful and I just. I get it. I get why Barbie wanted to be a human. We are all so fascinating. The ending montage alone is enough to make anyone with a heart cry. I hope that one day everyone is as in love with the world around them as this movie made me.
#1 Asteroid City- Dir. Wes Anderson
Tumblr media
If you don't know the I'm Wes Anderson's number 1 fan, I'm doing something wrong. Truth be told, I didn't get this movie at first. I left the theater knowing that there was some deeper meaning but...what? So I thought about it for two weeks and then it hit me. There is no clear answer. There's no clear answer because the actors can't find a clear answer. There's no clear answer because the in-universe playwright didn't write one and maybe Anderson himself didn't write one. The movie has clear themes of grief and love and identity but at the end of the day what you choose to make of it is all up to you. There's also a lot to be said about how the play is existential and about uncertainty in the future and I think that's another reason I liked Asteroid City. I'm always so worried about the future. It terrifies me. But what can I do. And with that I once again realized that Wes Anderson was truly genius, and I don't think I'll ever see a film quite like Asteroid City again.
Favorite performances from each film
#5 Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird
Tumblr media
I never got the hatred for Rachel Zegler. She was absolutely phenomenal in the 2021 West Side Story and she ate up Lucy Gray Baird. I just felt through the screen that Rachel understood her role so well. She played Lucy to all her vulnerability and strength and goddamn I am in love with her voice!! The old therebefore gave me absolute chills.
#4 Allison Oliver as Venetia Catton
Tumblr media
being complete honest she's who I wanted to be in like middle school. Allison Oliver managed to play her as both such a free spirit and then to haunted on such the drop of the dime. From her subtle emotions to her snapping at Oliver in the bathtub she had me eating out of the palm of her hand. She would've loved Tumblr.
#3 Shameik Moore as Miles Morales
Tumblr media
He had me laughing, crying, cheering and getting goosebumps the whole time. The absolute power Shameik Moore gives Miles is truly what tie the whole movie together. I feel like his performance often gets overshadowed for some of the bigger names in the cast and I truly find that shame. He gives Miles such a powerful and realistic portrayal that I admire it so deeply. From "Nah, I'mma do my own thing." to his conversations with Gwen to arguments with his parents, Shameik Moore makes Miles feel like a teenager who's trying to figure out who he is and a superhero saving a multiverse from collapsing
#2 Margot Robbie as Barbie
Tumblr media
I'm fucking sick of only hearing Ryan Goslings name mentioned when we talk about the BARBIE movie! It is Margot's movie!! SHE ATE THAT SHIT UP!! She managed to so subtly bring in the changes of barbie being only a doll to being a real person. She provides so much of the movies comedy too. Her laying down crying had me wheezing not gonna lie. But she also shows us that how strong Barbie is and how she's so multi-faceted.She is truly someone little girls should see and be inspired by. Margot truly brought Barbie to life in all the ways that the audience and the script needed. She had me laughing, crying and smiling so goddamn wide the whole film. Here's to you, Margot.
#1 Jason Schwartzman as Augie Steenback/Jones Hall
Tumblr media
It was the year of Schwartzman and nowhere was the proved more than in Asteroid City. Here we see, Jason Schwartzman playing and actor playing a single dad war photographer. Schwartzman manages to play all these layers so well, letting them blend together through on intense common factor: grief. Jones' grief bleeds into Augie in such a fascinating way that you might not even realize at first. It's so subtle and yet, it complete makes the performance. When we see Jones on his own a few times, though Jason Schwartzman manages to make him feel like a completely different man than Augie. The entire scene from Jones walking offstage to us being returned to 'Asteroid City' is truly some of my favorite acting of the year. Even through subtle expressions, we can truly see everything that Jones is experiencing. It's just such a sight to watch and it blows me away.
Some honorable film and performance mentions
Oppenheimer- Dir Christopher Nolan. Good film but a little too long if you ask me. Sorry!
Fav performance- Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer. She might not have been in a lot of the film but she stuck with me
Renfeild- Dir Chris McKay. Sorry I like fun camp! sue me!
Fav performance- Nic Cage as Dracula. I'm sorry Nic Cage is just so goddamn funny
Poison- Dir. Wes Anderson. Maybe the real snake was the Benedict Cumberbatch we met along the way.
Fav performance- Dev Patel as Woods. Wes please cast Dev Patel in a longer on of your films he ate this up.
Five Nights at Freddy's- Dir. Emma Tammi. I wanted to like it more but it felt like 3 different films until the last 20 minuets
fav performance- Matthew Lilard as William Afton. I want Stu Macher back after this.
The Swan- Dir. Wes Anderson. (Last time I mention Wes in this post I swear.) Hey Wesley! Quick question! WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?? Thank youuuu!
Fav performance- Rupert Friend as Narrator/Peter Watson. Yeah he was the only guy speaking and he carried! The one moment where he breaks the stoic delivery and truly pleads for them to not kill the swan? Wow.
Gaurdians of The Galaxy Vol 3- Dir James Gunn. I have never cried over cgi this hard in my life!
Bradley Cooper as Rocket. Just hearing him scream sob almost had me open mouth sobbing in public.
Scream 6- Dir. Matt Bettinelli-olpin, Tyler Gillet. Starting to get real pissed at radiosilence.
fav performance- Jasmin Savoy-Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin. She's so funny, I love her.
If y'all want I also have a favorite tv shows of 2023 post

reading the Qiu reunion while listening to a playlist with "Break my Heart Again" by FINNEAS was a risk I took and boy did it not pay off 🫠
I had barely recovered from hitting the bridge:
"So don't pretend that I'm the instigator You were the one, but you're born to say goodbye Kissed me half a decade later That same perfume, those same sad eyes"
as Qiu arrived to the party and then you hit me with
"You can see [them] wonder how much to ask for, and you find yourself wondering how much to give."
a few screens later and as cheesy as it sounds I genuinely needed to just stop and take a couple minutes to process the feelings it all brought up, especially as someone who lost a super important person in my life because I was a 'bad influence' (read: queer and helping her as she came to discover and accept she was as well despite an uber conservative christian upbringing).
And on that note if I could just ramble for a bit - Between Merry Crisis and CT:OS, I'm realizing that what I appreciate most about your writing is how real it feels. Like, in the niche of interactive fiction where most works are at least somewhat heightened, whether its the MC being a Chosen One, the setting being a heightened version of reality or outright fantasy, your writing is so grounded in reality that it almost feels biographical by comparison - and I mean that as a compliment I promise! It's just so real and relatable it feels almost nostalgic rather than escapist, which is something I think a *lot* of realistic fiction writers try to do, but so few can actually pull off in a way that feels genuine like yours do. Where most IF's leave me imagining what my MC's and their supporting casts would be up to after the final scene, yours always seem to leave me reflecting on my own past with how relatable your characters' experiences are.
Anyway idk if that actually makes any sense but thank you so much for the incredible update and I cannot wait for more <3
I am so AMAZED by the idea of you listening to that song while playing the update! Those lines are absolutely PERFECTLY IN SYNC. Crazy. I can only imagine how awesome that experience must've been!
Please keep telling me all the songs that you guys listen to as accompaniment to Merry Crisis, because it's so INTERESTING to know you guys' soundscapes/soundtracks to the game.
I'm sorry you had that experience of losing that really important person to you, and yes, it sounds a lot like what happened between Qiu and MC. It's so tough to be ditched by someone with an ultra conservative upbringing, but it also sucks to have gone through that kind of upbringing. If you're reading this and you belong to either of your groups, you have my love!!
And finally, thank you so much for your praise regarding Merry Crisis and CT:OS! It's really cool that you think they're both relatable and thought-provoking. I love that the IFs make you reflect on your own experiences. I do hope to reach a point in the writing that sparks readers to imagine what MC and the cast of characters get up to together off-screen as well though! :D
Sending you so many hugs.

3, 5, 6, 13, 23 from the video game asks! :)
Thanks for the ask!
video game questions
3. 1-3 games you’ve played in the past 12 months that you really enjoyed
the first Pillars of Eternity game (as evident by how much I've been posting about it) is still great and I 100% recommend it, it is darker fantasy than Dragon Age and there are a couple of Yikes Moments close to the beginning, but you WILL love at least one of your party members and the writing is pretty great. also a lot of its soundtrack was used in season 2 of Critical Role, and there is significant vibe/theme overlap, so if you enjoyed that season you'll probably like something about POE1 (also there are a lot of voices from the cr cast in the game itself. Matt Mercer notoriously voices two(2) of your best friends party members)
Dragon Age: Origins! The OG. The reason I'm even on this website. I had a pretty major reset when I realized that I accidentally locked myself out of Zevran's romance and now I have to do the Sacred Ashes quest again, but once I get through it things will get fun again. I've had a lot of fun writing Kyana meta based on this playthrough earlier this year, and I'm sure I'll have more things to say when I GET OUT OF THAT TEMPLE
I started playing The Sims 4 between writing sessions during NaNo. I made an off-brand Evelyn and another household based on two very old OCs, and I was really invested in them for a while (to the point of considering making fanart of the second household). I stopped playing at some point, but I think that, like Stardew Valley, this is going to be a fun thing to come back to every once in a while.
(the first answer was already very long so I'm putting the rest under the cut)
5. Game(s) coming out that you’re looking forward to
I played the demo for GLITCHED: The RPG a couple of years ago and it's been on my Steam wishlist even since. I don't actually know what's going on with the game (I think it was announced that it would come out in 2023 and then it didn't?), but I really hope that it will come out eventually because the demo is A Lot of my favorite things packed into one game. Like, honestly, even if the game won't be out for a while, I think that the demo itself is a really fun experience.
also, despite everything surrounding Dreadwolf, I'm definitely looking forward to it! though somewhat concerned about actually running the game because I Do Not Think my laptop will be able to handle it.
6. A series you’ve enjoyed since your early days of gaming and still enjoy to this day whether it still has games coming out or is one you return to
.........I mean, this is very much a Dragon Age blog. DA:O was one of my first RPGs (Skyrim was the other) and Here We Are all those years later
13. Quick, name the first song from a game that comes to mind
I haven't actually played it yet, but Challenging A Queen from Stray Gods. I'm definitely going to play it, though, because this is another game that looks like it was made personally For Me. and this song absolutely rules (my favorite version is the first one they played in this video)
23. A “Wow” moment of awe
...technically I didn't play this one either, but I watched a full playthrough of Wandersong on youtube, and the final song sequence I can't really talk about without spoiling everything was. very. Emotional(TM)
also for a more somber kind of awe, I really like the ambience in Emprise du Lion in DA:I and the White March DLC's entire deal in Pillars of Eternity. in both cases the environment made me just kind of pause for a second and take it all in (actually, adding to the song thing, the Abydon's Shell soundtrack from The White March is haunting)

looking back over the years (maison ikkoku ep. 27)
Tumblr media
Well as one does throughout their lives, or at least as I often find myself doing, I am on yet another rewatch of Maison Ikkoku. I tweeted briefly about being struck by the animation in episode 8, which I had never noticed until this round. This time I'm also impressed by the amount of diegetic music in this series that I never really processed: music on the streets, pop songs in restaurants and cafes, even a sad Japanese folk rock song when Mr. Ichinose reveals over dinner that he's been laid off.
I've always loved the last few minutes of episode 27 and have mentioned it before, so it's no surprise that this time around I still love it, but it's always worth a few more laudatory words. The episode as a whole is unremarkable: Soichirou goes missing after Kentarou takes him out on a walk and he runs off after a stranger with yakitori. Kyoko at first is unconcerned about his absence, telling Kentarou that Soichirou will return when he returns, but she begins to mull on the dog's presence in her life, in turn revealing her memories of both the human Soichirou while alive and her grief in the days right after his death. Finally, she goes out to look for him, not realizing that Godai has already put in a Herculean effort to find the dog. Lost in thought, she walks the hill back to Ikkoku-kan, only to come across Godai and Soichirou walking home.
Tumblr media
There's a maturity and patience to the final moments of this anime that you rarely see anymore. The pacing is glacially slow, with Kyoko's thought processes happening in 1:1 real time. When she first sees the silhouette of a man walking a dog, she breaks out into a delighted smile and calls out, "Soichirou-san!" The man turns around, the music swells, and you see a close-up of Kyoko's face. She is stunned, but by what, we're not sure. Does she see her dead husband, or does she realize at that moment that it can't possibly be him?
The music fades. The wind blows. In an agonizing half minute of silence, the train passes, and the streetlamps flicker into life behind her, one by one. When the streetlamp right above her lights up, we cut away to a shot of her face. She says her husband's name one last time, this time desperately, as if trying to grab a hold of a dog that has, unleashed, run away from her. She tries to say it a third time, but the name dies on her lips. She knows her husband is dead, and yet, can it be? It is like you are reliving her grief over the death of her husband with her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then: the streetlamp above the silhouetted figure lights up. It is, of course, Godai. We knew that, she knew that. Yet the light had to travel from behind her to above him, from the past to an unspoken future, before she can accept it. She calls Godai's name tentatively. He, bathed in sunlight and artificial light both, smiles down at Soichirou-san, sends him back to his rightful owner. In a moment of soundtrack genius, Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again, Naturally" begins to play (but only in those regions that had the license to include it). When we next see Kyoko close-up, the moment is broken. She is present, in the present. She is smiling again, and Soichirou licks her face.
At 15 it seemed to me obvious that Godai should get Kyoko at the end, because he was the main character. At 20 I thought Godai was a fool to chase after a woman while being destitute in college. At 25 I thought about the hard choices Kyoko made to give up a life of security with Mitaka for a life of little space and even littler pleasures with Godai. But at over 30 I see this story for what it is now, a love story through and through. Mitaka never had a chance. Kyoko's heart had made its choice long ago; the seven years we spend with these characters is for her to make peace with that decision, to learn to listen to herself, to give herself space to grieve and hold space for Soichirou's death while also making room for Godai, like the long two minutes at the end of episode 27 which end with Godai returning Soichirou, metaphorically and actually, to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some might call these scenes filler or saving animation budget. I think this is one of those rare moments where the anime truly internalizes the source material and gives us something unique to its own medium. Takahashi's original often makes Godai a butt-monkey even in his most dramatic moments. It is, at heart, a comedy as much as it is a poignant romance. The anime on the other hand takes an almost cinematic approach to "filming" the characters, who are often given moments to breathe and emote with just their faces as if this were a real movie. Nothing more is said in this moment in the anime, besides Godai and Soichirou's names. Nothing more needs to be said. The anime trusts the viewer to put the pieces together and link the parallel images of Godai and Soichirou to Kyoko's mental state. This episode comes after Kyoko admits at Soichirou's graveside that she isn't ready to move on and Mitaka/Godai both propose and ask and are asked to wait for her response. What a perfect moment to draw it all together. It isn't that Kyoko mistakes Godai for her late husband. She sees them both and knows who, and what, they are. It is that she needs time and our patience to cross that distance and walk under the same streetlamp as Godai. And in this episode, as he does throughout the series, Godai gives it to her.

A Search for Lost Media: Marilyn Monroe edition
The Shape of Water is one of my favorite fucking movies, I rewatch it every few times when I want to be reminded how single I am but also taking in the sight of vintage aesthetic coupled with actual non-CGI fantasy. It's a wonderful movie about a strange, but nevertheless lovingly made relationship among two "different" people.
But there's a scene, between Eliza and Giles, where, after an argument, Giles tries to seek comfort in the diner guy who turned out to be an awful person. After that moment is realized, Giles knocks on Eliza's door, and tells her that he'll help her. While they hug, the song in the background, playing since the diner scene, plays louder:
So come back to my arms, and show me how wrong I can be.
It's the only clear lyrics from a song sung by Marilyn Monroe, credited in the end credits as "provided" by someone by the name of Terry Karger, and is never acknowledged in the Shape of Water soundtracks everywhere else.
When I first heard it, I was like, oh! What a vibe! And never thought about it again.
But then when I listened to the soundtrack, I realized that the song wasn't present. Don't get me wrong, this isn't the first time they haven't included a song in a soundtrack, so I pulled back up to the movie, watched it again, but tracked the song in the scene again, and tried to look it up.
And that's how I found this article.
The song itself was written by Fred Karger, who coached Monroe’s vocals for her third feature film in the late 40’s, Ladies of the Chorus. It was lost until discovered in London by an anonymous man who said his father had been in the music business. The 12-inch disk was listed for sale man in 1995 in a Sotheby’s auction where it was expected to be purchased for up to $15,000. No further existence of the song can be found, except for this 20-second clip and forever on the silver screen, in The Shape of Water— and somehow with a feeling as Marilyn Monroe herself would have liked it.
I searched for any sources. I only found threads talking about this song, how the Marilyn Monroe enthusiasts only managed to dig up the lyrics and THAT 20 second clip, and this is how I found out about this article too.
A recently rediscovered recording by Marilyn Monroe is to be auctioned by Sotheby's in London on Sept. 13. The song, a plaintive ballad titled "How Wrong Can I Be," was apparently recorded in late 1948 or early 1949, when the actress was just 22 and struggling to gain a foothold in Hollywood.
Accompanied by a piano and muted trumpet, Monroe delivers the song in a torchy, seductive style with an occasional jazzy inflection and barely a hint of her breathy, whispery renditions of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" or "I Just Want to Be Loved by You." The voice is sultry, a little off-key from time to time, and instantly recognizable.
"How Wrong Can I Be," recorded on a 12-inch acetate disk, was never released. The anonymous seller, whose father was in the music business, was sorting through a stack of his father's recordings three years ago and noticed one with a hand-written label that read "Fred Karger at the piano, Manny Klein on the trumpet, vocal by Marilyn Monroe."
Great. So what now?
I searched through the Sotheby's archive. I tried looking for any other traces that google could give me, but there was nothing beyond Sotheby's Marilyn Monroe artifacts that DIDN'T include the mention of a 12-inch disk, and so I sat there, on the floor next to my bed at 6pm, having had too much of my free time, thinking about what else can I do. There were two ways for this to go: investigate WHO this person whose father was in the music industry back in the 40s could be, OR I find out who provided the song for the movie and start from there.
Of course, with all that I was as a dumb 17 year old with 0 experience in investigation, I picked the latter. And picked the latter I DID when I scraped through the credits of the movie on a PDF that I could no longer find, but there it was, sitting under the name credits of "How Wrong Can I Be", sung by Marilyn Monroe, read: Provided by Terry Karger.
Terry Karger is Freddy Karger's daughter. She was a child when Marilyn Monroe was dating him, and they were practically family even after Freddy no longer dated her. I contemplated contacting fucking Guillermo del Toro himself, maybe even his manager because that would've been the most realistic, but I let it sit because I didn't know if Terry would've been alive back then.
Fast forward to two years later.
I am 19. I search for the book. I search for Terry Karger.
And voila, SHE MADE A FUCKING BOOK ABOUT MARILYN MONROE JUST A YEAR BACK.
And that's where we sit in the present.
Because I emailed the publishing house asking for her contact information.
GRANTED, I didn't get a reply the first time I sent the email.
But I sent it again, as of today, April 10, 2023.
Here's to hoping we at least get something of a reply.

A Rabid, Song-by-Song Analysis of Turnabout Musical by Someone Who Knows Jack Shit About Music
Track 3: The Objection Song
The Objection Song! I have a confession to make: I don’t often listen to TM all the way through. I did in the beginning—when I had first discovered it, and was absolutely ravenous and couldn’t get enough. But after a couple hundred full listens I realized there were songs I just skipped too often in order to get to my favourites, and that resulted in me making a second playlist that was just more or less a handful of act 1 songs, and pretty much all of act 2. Thus, all my reactions to these act 1 songs will probably be a little less bulky, a little more fresh, because I’ve had less time to meditate on them and think on them. So! The Objection Song, here we go.
A beautiful tutorial of a song. We love Phoenix Wright, doomed to be a video game protagonist, and thus doomed to be a Bar-Certified lawyer who does not know how a cross-examination works. I’m used to the TAAAM version of this song, so listening to it feels a little bit like coming home but someone’s rearranged my furniture. That’s just fine.
Our first taste of Sarah Taranto’s take on Mia (by Aha [i am tazed]) and I forgot how much of a fucking boss she was hitting those high notes. I mean this in the kindest possible way but sometimes when I am listening to her my brain is like “Damn. Now you’re just showing off.” It’s truly a spiritual experience.
Immediately I am struck by how much I just love the arrangement of this song as a whole. It’s so bouncy and lighthearted and I feel like that in itself does an excellent job of setting the mood for how trials tend to be in Ace Attorney. Yes, someone died, and we’re all very upset about that—but while we’re arguing about how it happened, let’s just bring some absolutely fucking insane behaviour into this court of law. For flavour. I think the biggest pet peeve I have when it comes to AA fanworks is when people lose sight of this—yes, AA is a very powerful series about loss, grief, trauma, legacy, karma, and justice… but it is also about love and friendship and light in the darkness, and it is incredibly silly and goofy. Your honour, I plead oopsie daisies. The defense holds that its client be allowed their right to be a silly goose.
All of that is crucial to making a good AA fanwork, or at the very least one I personally find enjoyable. TM, of course, has this in spades.
As the cross-examination starts, we get one of our more obvious incorporations of the game soundtrack! The actual song that plays during cross in the games, Questioning ~ Moderato 2001. This is one of the most recognizable tunes from AA in my opinion, so it’s nice to hear it here! I fucking love whatever the piano is doing here as the contradiction reveals itself. No idea what to call that but it tickles my brain in ALL the right ways.
The desk slam is so POWERFUL. Now’s probably as good a time as any to talk about the foley work in this musical. It’s a little thing that I think goes very overlooked in most mediums, but it is crucial to my love of some of the songs in TM. Whenever there is a chance to incorporate an every-day sound effect, TM will take it more often than not, and that choice, naturally, adds a LOT more life to the world!
Oh wait hold on actually because I’ve just remembered how much I love Chris Zambelis as Larry Butz. There is not a shred of restraint in the way he plays this man, exactly as it should be. Larry’s agonized, despairing cry of ‘GIVE ME THE CHAIR!!!’ in the background is easily my favourite thing about this song. I mean no disrespect to the overall masterpiece of it, but that single moment is the selling point for me. I had completely forgotten until right this moment and just choked on my diet coke. Well done, sir.
There’s Sarah hitting that insane high note again. Is she out there doing great things with that voice of hers? God, I hope so.
I’m a very big fan of… well, honestly, every single harmony that exists in this musical, but there is just something very enchanting about whenever Mia and Phoenix get to sing together! It’s another rant I have planned for a different song, but I absolutely adore how hands-off Mia is in her mentoring in the game—she, like her mentor before her, lets Phoenix come to his own conclusions with some very gentle nudging. This song does an excellent job of representing that and then having them come together in the end—once Phoenix has gotten his wits about him, that’s when they begin their double-team. It’s a delight to listen to.
That’s about all I have to say about this one! Obviously, big shoutouts to Ben Smith as Sahwit, Ami Garrett as Payne, and William Barkley as our Judge :] Their character voices are impeccable, and they do a wonderful job of evoking an image in your head, even for someone who is perhaps not familiar with the franchise, I think~ Overall, The Objection Song does a wonderful job of setting the overall tone for the courtroom drama and sillies that exist within the AA universe. What more can you ask for!
[Turnabout Huh? What do you mean there’s an Ace Attorney Musical?]

November Era Playlist
Tumblr media
A while ago, @lady-stormbraver tagged me in a game of making a playlist to represent your current era. I took a while about it, but I think I’ve got a decent representation here!
Tumblr media
Yeah, yeah, I put Swimming Pool as the first song of all playlists about myself. It fits, okay?
If life is a swimming pool How do I swim? Something in the water makes my eyes sting So much, is it me, am I the one at fault? Or is there something wrong with the water?
Tumblr media
Two instrumental songs, energetic, maybe just a little panic-inducing. Note: I haven’t watched and don’t intend to watch Nope—I just like to listen to movie soundtracks, and this one really stood out to me. I’ve been putting The Run on loop when I need some adrenaline to get me going! This section represents the general tension of my college life—I’m dancing along a tightrope, I’m running parkour, I’m playing an endurance game, I’m enjoying it but it’s a challenge.
Tumblr media
Two angsty songs, because yeah. First Switchfoot’s The Original— Thanks @keendaanmaa for introducing this to me!
Free yourself Ain't no one to do it Free yourself Ain't nothing to it Free yourself Don't let nobody try and take your soul You're the original
It’s been an autumn of taking hold of my life and going, no other human being is going to fix me; I have to take responsibility for my life and get proactive. This realization (which I have multiple times per year) brought to you by the Bible, and also Shigeo Kageyama.
Flood, Jars of Clay!
Lift me up when I'm falling Lift me up I'm weak and I'm dying Lift me up I need you to hold me Lift me up and keep me from drowning again
Self-explanatory. I can’t do anything myself, all my strength is from God, I’ve felt like a failure so much this autumn that I’ve had to just go: hey God, you’re not giving up on me, right? Yeah? Could you lend some help?
Tumblr media
Two songs for friendship and hope. First The Graduate—Arcadian Wild. Thanks @lovesodeepandwideandwell for introducing me to this one! This era has so many blessings from friends.
We are wandering through the wild We are wondering if and when we’ll reach the other side Weighed down by our hearts of stone Bound to these bodies of broken bones We carry such similar loads Turns out we are not alone
We could cling to comfort, content to run in place Frozen, cause we fear the cost But how can we expect to find out where we ought to go, unless we get a little lost?
Hope, Jack Johnson. Thank you @isfjmel-phleg for introducing this one to me! It’s now one of my favorites. It just feels! So cozy!
You learn to love But you don't Always Have to hold to your head Higher than your heart
You better hope you're not alone You better hope you're not alone
Tumblr media
If You’ve Got Time—Gaelic Storm. A funny song about adult friendship (or at least I read it platonically jfslkkdfjlsk).
Call me stupid, call me crazy And if you feel inclined You can call me when you’re feeling lazy
Can you make it Friday afternoon? Or am I rushing things too soon? It will be Wednesday morning, coffee might be better Let me know if I am moving way too fast Let’s make it last Let’s make it last
And ending with a nice little Celtic piece that never fails to bring a smile to my face :) it has coffee shop vibes, I think!
you can consider yourself tagged to share a playlist if you want! you don’t have to go insane and explain everything if you don’t want too though XD

Tears For Fears & Garbage – TD Pavilion at The Mann – Philadelphia, PA – June 21, 2022
In their recent concert at the Mann, Curt Smith of Tears for Fears was discussing working on their recent album The Tipping Point. It is their first album in 18 years, and only the second album of the new millennium. In fact, it is the only the second album they have done as a duo since Sowing the Seeds of Love in 1989. (Smith left the band from 1991-2000, during which time his band partner Roland Orzabal released two albums with other collaborators as Tears for Fears.)
Smith said as they were working on the new album, they were hearing from all sorts of people in the business, trying to hook them up with hip young writers and producers who could update their sound. Finally, Smith acknowledged, they realized it made sense to recognize the fact that they had grown older, and to just keep on doing what they always have done.
Tumblr media
Yes, Tears for Fears has gotten older – we all have – but on this comeback tour they still sound mighty tight.
They led off with the new stuff, playing the delicate ballad “No Small Thing” and the electro-vibed title track from “The Tipping Point.”
However, then they pulled out the big guns, tearing into a slightly hard-edged take of their first number one single from the summer of 1985, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” Performed live with a full band it lost a touch of its new wave synth feel, but it still sounded like brand new all these years later.
Tumblr media
The rest of the set continued the mix of old and new, with favorites like “Mad World,” “Change” and “Head Over Heels” (done in a medley with “Broken”) keeping the nostalgic energy up. All the while lesser-known newer songs and album tracks like “Badman’s Song,” “Suffer the Children” and “My Demons” showed the band’s progression and eclectic diversity.
Not surprisingly, the set only included one song from the two albums in which Smith was not with the band, and that one, their last hit “Break It Down Again” fit like a glove. The sweetly psychedelic “Sowing the Seeds of Love” has aged well, bringing a touch of retro-flower-power to the fore. The band also playfully interspersed a snippet of the old Wings single “Let ‘Em In” into their own fan fave “Secret World.”
Tumblr media
One of the finest moments came in the gorgeous and tragic ballad “Woman in Chains,” in which the backing vocalist Laura Evans did a stunning master class in gospel vocal power, taking the lines originally done by Oleta Adams on the record.
By the time they led into the encore with a gorgeous take on “Head Over Heels” (still the band’s finest song to my ears) the crowd had settled into a sweet groove. Then they came back to close out with a three-song encore which included a driven take on their early single “Change” and then shut things down with the band’s classic sing-along protest “Shout.”
Tumblr media
Post-grunge hitmakers Garbage, featuring fiery frontwoman Shirley Manson and drummer Butch Vig (the unofficial fifth member of Nirvana during their heyday and the producer of their classic Nevermind) got everything started with set that was fire. Like Tears, they started up with a couple of lesser-known more recent songs – “Automatic Systematic Habit” and “The Men Who Rule the World,” before slamming into their hits with a scorching take on their 90s classic “Stupid Girl.”
Surprisingly, in this 12-song set, they skipped over one of their biggest songs – the 1999 soundtrack favorite “No. 1 Crush” – but the set included all the band’s other favorites. And I have to give extra credit for the fact that they pulled out a dramatic take of their underrated James Bond theme “The World is Not Enough.”
Tumblr media
Their songs still felt coiled and venomous as Manson screeched her way through fan faves like “Queer,” “Push It” and a sweet medley of their song “Wicked Ways” mixed in with Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus.”
She also did a surprisingly restrained but still powerful version of arguably their biggest hit, starting “Only Happy When it Rains” as a pensive ballad before bringing the beat up slightly, even giving it a bit of a reggae vibe, then eventually exploding into the second chorus as the band turned things up to 11.
So it sounds like Smith was only partially correct on his judgment of his band – and his opener, too. They may have gotten older, but they still can rock the house.

Rules: Post ten songs that not many people know you love, or that you don’t listen to as often as your favourites. I was tagged by @penelo14 in this so here we go!
1. First song up is "If You Love Me For Me" from Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper. It's super sweet and I really loved it as a kid. And I still do. 💖💖
2. Another one is "Noble Maiden Fair (A Mhaighdean Bhan Uasal)" from Brave. This song really hit me when I saw the movie in theaters and it kinda captivated me. And made me tear up a bit. Younger me was set on memorizing the lyrics even if it was in a different language. (And my barely passable pronunciation was kinda funny. 😂)
3. I'm just picking random songs here so next is "Laval the Lion" from Legends of Chima. I, like many others, initially thought that the show was replacing Ninjago back when it was gonna premiere. I'm not sure whether I looked for the song before or after giving the show a chance, but either way I liked the tribal/jungle vibes it had.
4. Another song is "Chi" which is also from Chima. The flute near the end really captivated me, and younger me went nuts trying to find the song on YouTube but the soundtrack wasn't out yet (I think) so I was just hoping the videos I found wouldn't get taken down. But eventually I bought the album on iTunes when I got the chance.
5. "Touring the City" from Atlantis: The Lost Empire is another one I like. It's such a good song and it really captures exploring a city for the first time. (James Newton Howard is so good.👌🏻👌🏻)
6. Also from Atlantis is "The Crystal Chamber." It's so captivating and amazing and I just love Kida so much!
7. Yet another childhood favorite is "A La Nanita Nana" from The Cheetah Girls 2. I loved the Cheetah Girls as a kid and once again younger me was set on memorizing the lyrics even with my okay-ish Spanish 😂. The song also kind of reminded me of one of my grandmothers. It still does, actually.
8. Continuing to pick random songs, I'm gonna go with "Dragonsong" from Final Fantasy XIV, specifically Heavensward. The feels kinda hit me like a truck a bit late mainly because it didn't sink in until much later. BuT I CAN FEEL THE EMOTION AS WELL AS MY INCOMING TEARS BECAUSE IT'S SO DEEP. I love Heavensward. 😭😭💖💖 (Also the Distant Worlds version is AMAZING.)
9. I'm beginning to realize a lot of these are lyrical songs so I'll just fling another one into this. 😂 "Kiss Me Goodbye" from Final Fantasy XII was one that I was generally neutral towards 'cause my first thoughts had been "pop song here? After everything? Okay then." But after watching playthroughs of it about three times with @misstoodles and watching her play the game the feels finally hit me. T-T (Once again the Distant Worlds version is also nice.👌🏻👌🏻)
10. Aaand the last one for here is "A Song From Her Memory" from Final Fantasy IX. When I first heard this song while watching a walkthrough with Misstoodles I thought it was one of the prettiest songs I ever heard and it made me so relaxed. I love Garnet so much. 😭😭💖💖
BONUS (Because I keep thinking of other songs and I NEED TO EXPRESS MY LOVE FOR GARNET): "Dagger Cuts Her Hair" gets me EVERY TIME. I was literally tearing up at this part of the game AND I STILL DO. Garnet went through so much and I'm so proud of her overcoming all of it. I LOVE HER SO MUCH. 😭😭💖💖💖💖 (I reached the audio file limit but it's there on Spotify. T-T)
Sooo I'm tagging @misstoodles, @chirithy564, and anyone else who wants to do it! (I can't think of anyone else. 😐)

On Repeat Playlist Tag Game
Rules: Shuffle your repeat playlist 10 times and tag 10 people.
Listen, I can't just put my list on here. You have to know WHY this thing was probably on repeat over and over again.
LISTEN-- I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS GONNA JUST CALL ME OUT IMMEDIATELY.
Not only is this on loop because it's great, but ALSO because I want to draw a half/half drawing of Emily and Charlie as they unite and sing their part. I will likely play this on loop again while I do that very thing.
I just loved the vibe of this song. It kept me going on slow days at work. But also the more I listened to it, the more I want to apply it to an OC. Not sure if an existing one or if one will be made for this. But it's there. It's growing. It will be done.
I never listened to this whole album. This popped up randomly one day and I just.....couldn't stop listening to it. Then I stopped listening to it for a while. Then it popped up again and suddenly BOOM, it's on the Rose playlist. It's Durgetash angst. It's *chef's kiss* I love it.
The show came out like, two weeks ago. I was just binging the album over and over again-- this one being on the list shouldn't count but I'm playing by the rules here.
Heard the snippet on tiktok a while ago. Was hyped when the full song released. I love trying to add harmonizing vocals to it. It makes me feel like I'm floating.
This was great, okay? I definitely looped this one on purpose. That line about Hell rising to war, losing the ones she was killing for? FUCK YES.
THIS SONG IS JUST, IT'S A VIBE, OKAY? I HEAR IT AND I GO "YES, THIS IS GOOD. i WILL LISTEN, ALWAYS."
My middle/high school musical taste called and said I would like this. They were right. The more I see on this list the more I realize I just really like angry angsty songs. Like...Idk, I'm a generally peppy and bubbly person but the songs I listen to are so ANGERY
Epic the musical my other love. Yes I also want to make an animatic for this. That's a big reason this gets on loop -- imagining the scenes I may never make cuz TIME IS NOT MY FRIEND HERE.
WHAT A BANGER TO END THIS LIST ON-- THIS SONG IT JUST-- UGH-- THE PIANO!? THE VOICE!? YES. YES PLEASE. UGHHHHH (this might end up in my Rosestarion playlist...)

How music can bring back memories: The soundtrack of Kirby’s Return to Dreamland
In January this year, I found in a box my old Wii, my first ever console and the one that introduced me to gaming. I realized it was in a good state despite all those years stored and collecting dust, so I figured I could turn it on to play some of the games it had. Particularly, one of my favourite games ever, one that I spent countless hours playing when I was little, so I decided I wanted to talk about it in this post, but more specifically about its amazing soundtrack. The game is Kirby’s Return to Dreamland that came out for the Wii console in 2011. When I think of this video game, one of the first things that comes to my mind is the music. All the songs were composed by Jun Ishikawa and Hirokazo Ando, both have also worked in the soundtrack for other games of the Kirby series. I remembered that the songs were full of distinctive sounds, a mixture of different instruments and synthetiser, and each one of them were very different from each other, as they serve as a way of clearly defining every level that we must get through to achieve the main goal of the game. We get thematic songs that perfectly accompany the visuals of each level, in the sense that when you listen to them you can easily identify which one it represents. For example, we get a banjo and guitars for the desert-themed level, and a marimba and steelpan for the oceanic one. I also think the music adds another layer to the gameplay, as Kirby is a character that doesn’t speak, so the only way that its emotions are displayed, apart from the facial expressions, is the music that plays in a specific moment of the gameplay. If it’s a happy moment, we get cheerful melodies and instruments like trumpets; if it’s a fight, we get rapid beats and drums; and so on.
I remember playing this game with my little sister almost every afternoon after school, and because we were not very skilful players, it took us weeks to finish the game, and even after completing it, we kept replaying it a thousand times. I had forgotten about all of this, but after turning on the console and playing the game for a while with my sister again, I thought how incredible it was that before even playing, just hearing the music brought back all those memories of my childhood.
You can listen to the full soundtrack here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AY4OayciJ3Q

110 in the Shade (1992 OBC) Explained Only Through the Soundtrack
For context of what this is see this post. (also will have masterlist of musicals listened to)
Broadway musical from 1963. Revival in 2012 with Audra McDonald
I had not heard of it before.
Music by Harvey Schmidt
Lyrics by Tom Jones
Book by N. Richard Nash
Stars:
Inga Swensen - plays Lizzie
Robert Horton - plays Mr. Starbuck
Stephen Douglass - I’m assuming plays the other love interest, but no idea.
Setting: Definitely somewhere in the South in the United States. Based on the Southern accents. also the first song is “It’s Gonna be Another Hot Day”
Genre: Romance, Slice of Life
Character Names: Lizzie (First named in Lizzie’s Comin’ Home. Female Lead), Jim (brought up in Poker Polka), There’s a dude named File?? (First named in Hungry Men. Lizzie seems interested in him coming by so prob one of the male leads), Mr. Starbuck (First named in Rain Song. One of the Male Leads)
Plot: It’s a very hot day in a very small town. Douglass’s character (we’ll go with File) is complaining about the heat. All the guys in town sing about Lizzie as she comes back into town? Lizzie is kind of bummed out because she’s worried she’ll never find a man. This other guy named Mr. Starbuck also just got into town and he convinces some of the townsfolk that he can make it rain on Sunday if they pay him $100. Lizzie thinks he’s full of shit. Starbuck uses toddler logic and says “no you’re full of shit” to her which makes her pretty mad. Lizzie then runs in File who sings about how he thinks relationships all end too quickly, though she then sings about how actually they can last a while, and File starts to wonder if maybe she’s right. File seems into her. But after File leaves, she sings ANOTHER song about how she’s so lonely (I think she thinks she doesn’t have a chance with File). Mr. Starbuck also seems to like Lizzie and calls her his Melisande, saying he’d find the golden fleece for her if she asked. (Maybe Starbuck had been showing Lizzy how he cons people and she had fun doing it?) Lizzie is also a bit into him too, but ultimately decides to go with File as her normal self than go off with Starbuck as someone else. It’s Sunday now and it actually starts raining. Mr. Starbuck leaves the town, all the people in awe.
Other notes
At the end Mr. Starbuck says “For the first time in my life, rain” so it’s most likely a coincidence. Potentially hinting at the fact that Mr. Starbuck tends to bullshit but when it came to Lizzie, she made him feel something true?
Toddler logic: “I’m sad about you. You don’t believe in anything, not even yourself” Mr. Starbuck. He says this because Lizzie doesn’t believe he can make it rain, between that and being named Starbuck. I did not like this dude at all.
It was made in the 60s so all the women just want to provide for their poor men who have been working hard all week and finally have a day off. Lizzie’s whole thing is about how she wishes she had a man to take care of.
I heard Inga’s voice say “File” and I just thought damn, any other singer and I would have treated it as a throwaway name but the female lead just said it so probably one of the guys from a previous song.
I didn’t fully comprehend that it had been a love triangle until like the last song tbh. Douglass didn’t have a super distinct voice and Spotify didn’t label him as a singer on half of his songs (For example “A Man and a Woman” is just listed as a Lizzie song, even though it’s a duet). I had realized there must be two different guys, but I think I started to wonder if it was Starbuck and a Bunch of Other Guys.
Poker Polka has a fun name to say but wow those lyrics are a pretty good representation of depression. It’s a dude (ohh, must be File, he seems like he isn’t having a good time) singing about how he doesn’t do a series of things he enjoyed doing anymore. Poker, dancing, picnics. all things you’d do with groups of people.
Would I listen to it again? Nope. This is not my vibe of musical in the slightest. Listening to the Audra McDonald version is tempting, but I didn’t like the songs in general.
Next Show 13 (2008) - link will be added after I listen to it

Persona 5 Royal Review/Rambling - Spoilers!
With Persona 4 Golden being my only experience with the SMT games, Persona 5 Royal is such a wonderful addition to the series. Oozing with style in the huds, menu screen animations, scene transitions and just about everywhere else, the game is such a treat for the eyes with nary a dull moment.
This is by no means meant to undermine the soundtrack, which is one of the best of any game I’ve ever played. I have like 4 songs from the game in my personal playlist, with Life Will Change being my fave track. If FF14′s taught me anything, it’s that nothing makes you feel more badass killing shit than with a killer song playing in the background.
That’s also one of my fave directions they took with the game. You and your posse are badasses. Seeing everyone’s poses and the transitions from 3D to 2D after All-Out attacks never get stale. And just when I thought the combat couldn’t get any cooler, it introduces Showtime attacks!
If I had to nitpick something, it’d be how the game kept sexualizing Ann. Her Phantom Thief outfit, her Showtime attacks, and in the animated scenes especially. Which is a shame, coz the game didn’t need to do it at all to keep my attention but I’m probably in the minority that’s annoyed by it.
To summarize, I had a grand ol’ time and the game is now one of my top 3 favorites. (Might be top 1 even, but gonna have to think on it.)
Some other fun tidbits: • By sheer coincidence, I maxed out Takemi’s confidant rank first and selected choices that could have let me romanced her. (Read somewhere that there were requirements for this?) She was just so pretty that whenever she texted I couldn’t say no lol. • Also by sheer coincidence, the second confidant I maxed was Kawakami. Guess I subconsciously like older women.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯    • I romanced Haru in the end though. It was either her or Kasumi, but after finding out the latter had specific requirements (and already failing most of them), I went with the former. • I might just have a soft spot for girls calling me senpai coz I romanced Rise in P4G too lol. • I was least interested in Makoto for a while, but after reading some comments online and doing a little introspection, she’s become one of my faves. • I’ve never felt smarter than realizing right away that Akechi could hear Morgana. Felt real dumb too coz even after all that, I never suspected him. Figured it wasn’t a big deal or that he’d tell the gang or something. Me big dumb. • The game has made me want to play through P4G again, coz I never beat the actual final boss and see the true ending. Will probably do it soon.
Also read that the harem route hurts like all hell? But I have no choice if I want to see every romance scene in one playthrough. :( • First ever game where I immediately want to play it again after finishing. Gonna do the harem route to see all the romance scenes. (And to finally date Kasumi!!)
I heard the girls you don’t go on a date with on Valentine’s all come and beat you up? Which is gonna suck, especially coz I plan to save scum to see how the date goes with every one. I refuse to watch it on YT. >:(
I’m glad I failed to max rank Maruki my first time playing too. I apparently missed a lot of content coz of it lmao. I’m following a 100% guide now so I’m not gonna miss anything. Can’t wait!
