and i’m half passed out in bed already but i gotta do what i gotta do 🤍 some time travel au words with double/triple sentence count bc lord have i been tagged a lot in those lately 🫶
Owens wants to talk with him — well, as much as the scientist leader of a secret government project that makes political super weapons of unborn children can ever just want to talk with someone like Steve. It makes him shudder every time Hopper mentions it in an off-sentence, just a side note over the sizzling food on the stove, just an afterthought when he grabs a beer for himself and a coke for Steve.
And every time, Steve freezes with the ice cold rush of panic, his jaw clenching shut and the nausea he’s been fighting all day crashing on him tenfold.
Steve knows what they do to helpless children and their mothers; he knows what they do to people who ask just the wrong question, or who know just a bit too much. He doesn’t even want to imagine what they’d do with him if they find out what he knows. If they get it in their heads that he knows everything; if they make him out to be someone who’s a lot more than a scared, confused teenager who got wrapped up in some bullshit that’s so much bigger than him.
Owens wants to talk with him. It didn’t go so well last time — images of broken skulls and bodies ripped limb to limb come back to him, swirling in nausea and feverish fear that leaves him immovable and deaf to the world at least once a day.
“Told him I’d put a bullet through his head if he tries,” Hopper adds that night, and Steve, still frozen and suddenly feverish, lifts his eyes away from the nothingness to look at him. Hopper is looking at him, too — because they do that now — and there’s something in those eyes. A surprising genuineness. Fierce. Familiar.
And suddenly it’s like the walls are extending around him, the ceiling ascending as the world outgrows him and leaves him tiny and pathetic and with one more reminder that he doesn’t belong here. Now. It’s pathetic, how much relief it brings to hear Hopper utter such a direct threat, announcing he would kill someone for Steve like he’s talking about the weather.
It’s twisted, the feeling of security so wrong in its nature, and yet so pure. It battles all the other things he’s feeling; all of them leaving him without the energy to speak.
So he remains still, tempests of emotions and thoughts and memories warring inside him, and all he can do is hope that Hopper understands his silence for now.
Please don’t kill anyone for me, he wants to say, but also Yes, please and Thank you.
With a grunt and a nod, Hopper turns back to his food, and Steve envies him for his ability to move right now; for the ability to eat anything at all. He envies him for not knowing.
But he takes that envy and shoves it into the tempest, feeling only tendrils of it lingering in his mind, and adding to the mess of things he carries inside his chest.
It will burst one day, he knows. It already feels too tight to breathe.

deseret book is more persistent than duolingo.
i ordered 2 books for a church research project on Black saints in the early Church and also in the Reorganization, on which the one book had a small section us and all had info from the our shared early church history, and it was an ebook too!
and i get physical mail from them once a month. i have no idea how to cancel.
herald house, the community of christ publishing house, contacts me much less, and i buy books from them all the time.
and oh their church book app reminds me to read my scriptures and the words of their prophets regularly if it's not in sleep mode.
i have to admire the effort behind it, ngl.

YOU DIDNT ASK so im sorry in advance (especially because i wont be explaining this well) But. ill be so honest i dont think the t-shirt kon is bad in a vacuum like it could be cute 😭 i do think its genuinely kinda fun when the characters wear their own little merch. the t-shirt outfit is even kind of funny because hes literally just wearing a t-shirt and jeans 😭 i love kon no matter what!!
but in the context of the transition from young justice (the comic) and the gang "graduating" into the teen titans (vol.3) i feel like it was a regression for him. idk i read into kon and transness+being lgbt too much so ive seen interpretations of it being his internalized homo/transphobia because its also a time where he has a secret identity for the first time in small-town america... and i do enjoy that, but it was Not intended by the writes (especially considering who was writing him in the mid-late 2000s)
kon's character to start off is really about identity and the reclamation of it when he was intended to be a Thing, and how he struggled under the weight of acting like he thinks he should/expectations placed on him (especially because he did not have an alternate identity or a name at first, he was just superboy. THEN kon el and conner kent) and how he expresses himself by replacing a tag cadmus put on him with a gold earring and generally dressing in a flashy and flamboyant and alternative way
so then when we transition to the teen titans kon, they sort of......strip him of that expression of personality. hes put in a t-shirt and jeans. they take away his earring. hes put in a relationship w/ cassie sandsmark (who btw. is very wlw coded to match him in the YJ comic, and both of their designs suffered what we call the cishetifcation) that is ultimately so bad for their characters (meanwhile kon is written into the most gay coded friendship w/ tim drake for like. a decade.)
and the young justice cartoon is an adaptation that was attempting to take the teen titans run from the 80s i believe? and young justice 98-2003, AND the 00's teen titans run. (decades of story to work with and way too many characters and groups, leads the cartoon to, in my opinion, suffer from a too many cooks situation)
and it does not handle kons character very well at all either </3 AND they used the t-shirt design while sticking him in a very unhealthy relationship w/ a character hes never really interacted w/ much in the comics. so umm. TL;DR very mixed feelings on t-shirt conner
i do recommend reading young justice though <3 (AND IM GLAD YOU LIKE MY DESIGN !! tysm <333 the curly hair is a must <3) sorry for the essay i just wanted to expand on why i put the t-shirt boy in the "sigh" categories 😭
ah, when i said i liked t-shirt conner, i didn’t mean the outfit, i was specifically referring to the young justice cartoon’s characterization ^^; i do acknowledge that it was a mixed bag that was forced to cherrypick years of history as an adaptation, and i get why conner fans don’t see him as Their Conner, but i’m gonna be so real with you. i liked him a lot in the cartoon 😭 as a standalone show, the first season does a rly good job of letting you understand his struggles and thought process, there were a lot of moments that endeared me to his angst while also letting him still feel like a kid. but i think i’m also biased towards characters that default to anger as a trauma response (completely unrelated to recent events believe it or not! wacky coincidence tho! foreshadowing even…?)
conner and m’gann’s relationship was def not the most interesting to me, but it’s also not the worst one. i have other biases against. other couples. but i’m curious to see how it develops bc unhealthy or not, i wanna see how it affects the characters, ykwim? like i’m not in it for the shipping, even if we All know there’s a better conner ship U__U
idk i just feel worn out by comics cynicism bc while i get it (i’m a hal fan, by god do i get it), i also don’t want to treat anything in dc too sacred. it’s more fun for me personally to view new iterations/adaptations as puzzles to work out rather than view them as character assassinations if even that. there are some truly unsalvageable things out there, but i generally think there’s smth good to gain in everything. and the young justice cartoon gave me a t-shirt conner to gain in my heart, so i can’t fault his character change too much as drastic as it is
all of this to say tho: the alt look is obviously superior. NOTHING beats a cropped jacket <3

1. when i sing, mountains dance by irene solà, translated from the catalan by mara faye lethem - you have all probably seen me mention this book before, but it completely blew me away. it’s loosely centered around two families in the rural pyrenees but the chapters are narrated not only by various characters, but by mushrooms, storm clouds, dogs, etc… it sounds weird but it’s so well-written & translated, so interesting, and the last chapter is incredible. begging everyone to read it. if this gives you any idea of how much i loved it: two months after i finished reading it, i forced my mom to leave my soccer game early & drive to a book fair to hear the author speak & have her sign my copy. i told her it was one of my favorite books ever.
2. brickmakers by selva almada, translated from the spanish by annie mcdermott - this is inspired by r&j and set in rural argentina. it’s violent and painful and a quick read and soooo good. i read it on a plane in one sitting and when i finished it i just had to sit there staring into space for 30 minutes to process it. definitely try & check content warnings if you’re interested (i can also elaborate if needed) but it’s great
3. labyrinths by jorge luis borges, translated by the spanish from [idk and can’t find my copy rn sorry]- man. both my dad and my spanish teacher used to tell me borges was super difficult (and i get it!), which is why i picked this up in english not spanish, but… wow. he’s famous for a reason. the concepts in his stories and essays are incredibly interesting, and it’s definitely something i hope to revisit when i’m older so that i can get more out of it
4. chilean poet by alejandro zambra, translated from the spanish by megan mcdowell- i am an alejandro zambra fan through and through so i was super excited to read this!! probably not my favorite book of his (multiple choice <3) but still very well-crafted, deceptively simply told, and as always… fathers and sons… they get to me
5. los detectives salvajes by roberto bolaño - this book is VERY long and VERY weird, and i don’t know if i genuinely liked it this much or if i just spent so much time with it i got attached. i remember feeling meh for the first ~200 pages, but once i started really thinking about ulises + belano searching the globe for a writer, just as the narrator searches for them, i got into it. it made me want to read 2666 at some point!!
6. formas breves by ricardo piglia - much shorter than los detectives salvajes haha! this was mostly literary criticism/commentary with a little fiction but i genuinely enjoyed it a lot, plus piglia talked about a couple different writers from argentina that i now want to check out! reading list material hehe :)
7. a ghost in the throat by doireann ní ghríofa - i read this way back in early january, so my memory isn’t quite as sharp, but this is sort of a novel-memoir of an author and mother who becomes fascinated by an 18th century irish nobleman/mother/poet (eibhlín dubh ní chonaill). super interesting!!
8. translating myself and others by jhumpa lahiri - i found these collection of essays, most about lahiri’s ideas on translation after beginning to translate from italian, & since i like the concept of translation & translated literature this was fun for me
9. no voy a pedirle a nadie que me crea by juan pablo villalobos - this was another weird one, i’m not gonna lie, but the way in which it’s told is cool & i found the tone — unsettlingly sarcastic and funny, given that it’s literally about a guy getting blackmailed by a criminal organization — fascinating.

no bc he really loved that team. he built a community with the guys to talk about their faith & mental health. he loved being a mentor and someone the guys could look up to and talk to when they needed it. he finally felt safe in that locker room.
He repeatedly talked about wanting to stay in nashville for the rest of his life. How he was always meant to be there. Now he has to move again, with three kids… man, this sucks. His production was good. I know the contract was a little high, but he was good again. Gosh, and I was rooting SO HARD for the preds.
After everything there was only one more team I wanted him to play for… if he were to be traded or ended up a free agent again, there was only one place… I just didn’t think the time would come so quickly.
Come home bby.. we got so close a few years ago, and I never gave up hope he’d be a hab some day. come home❤️
