Bucket of Bolts | Din Djarin x reader
summary: The dad and the dog he didn't want but its Din Djarin and a BD unit.
warnings: Din being mean to BD. Man is so petty its funny
a/n: I love BD-1 so much and I just know Din would be so petty to that poor little droid. Also!! This is my first Din fic so I hope you enjoy!!
Tumblr media
Din Djarin hated droids. With every fiber of his being he hated droids. Big ones, small ones. It didn't matter to him. He refused to trust them with anything. So letting one live on his ship was painful.
When you met Din there was no doubt he was a capable man. He could take down any foe and not even break a sweat. But as strong as he was he wasn't the best mechanic.
The Razor Crest was a big ship and as much as he didn't want to admit it he needed help. That's how he met you. For food, a place to sleep, and a good pay, he hired you to travel with him. You accepted immediately.
For years you had watched as travelers came in and out of the spaceport. You longed to follow them, to see what the galaxy had to offer but you were stuck in Tatooine. So you jumped at the chance to go with him.
Overtime you two had grown fond of each other. Traveling with Din and his child brought adventure and fun into your life and he knew after a week that he could never let you go once he had you.
But that doesn't mean he was thrilled when you came onto the ship with a bucket of bolts in your arms. He protested adamantly when he saw you working on fixing its leg.
"You are not going to let that thing stay." He crosses his arms as you wave him off.
"But Din, Look at him." You scratch its head and the droid beeps happily.
"It's not a him, it's an it and it is nothing but wires and metal." The droid looks at him and puts its head down sadly.
"You hurt its feelings." You huff and set down your tools. Letting the droid stretch its legs, it lets out a few happy sounding boops and jumps on your shoulder.
"It's a BD unit Din. These guys are super helpful. Please can he stay? It'll make fixing the ship faster and he can navigate for us." You plead.
Din stands at the door unmoving. It's hard to tell how he's feeling with no face to read but he lowers his shoulders in defeat and you know you've won.
"Keep that thing away from me." Is all he says before he heads back to the cockpit.
"Don't worry BD, he's nicer than he looks."
- - -
For months he let that droid live on his ship and though he hated it, he couldn't deny how happy it made you. Grogu had grown fond of the droid as well meaning Din was now outnumbered by his own clan.
Sitting in the back of his ship on a cargo box, he polishes his blaster as the that little. Thing. Rests on the table. It beeps curiously, taking a small step before hurrying back when Din moves his blaster.
"Din stop glaring at BD." You scold lightly as you enter the room. Double checking your small bag you sling it around your shoulder.
"I'll be back in a hour." You were docked on a small planet for repairs and restocking and after your main trip to the market you realized you were missing a few things.
"Are you sure you'll be okay alone?" He asks.
"I'm sure, I have the blaster you gave me in here." You say patting your hip. Leaning down you rest your forehead against his helmet and he sighs.
"Wait you're taking that thing right?" He says as he notices that BD was not following you.
"No need, besides he can help you replace the sheet metal on the walls." You call as you walk down the ramp.
"Don't leave me here with it!" Din shouts before letting out a frustrated sigh.
Turning back he lets out a scoff as BD watches him carefully. He knows he should start on the repairs with the child asleep but he's reluctant to work with BD.
"Come on." He grumbles as he heads to the back of his ship. BD beeping and following him happily.
"Where does this go?" He holds up a part and the watches as BD scans and projects the piece onto the wall. He has to admit that it's helpful. Without it he probably would have given up by now.
"I still don't like you, you know." He says while looking at BD. The basic work was done and now he just had to wait for you to get back. BD beeps curiously, inching closer and staring up at the mandalorian.
"But, you seem to make them happy." He relents, thinking back to memory of you introducing BD to the child.
The happy coos that made him smile under his helmet. He reaches out and gently pats BD's head once. Quickly pulling his hand away while BD chirps happily.
"How are my favorite boys doing?" Your voice makes him jump.
"Surprised you haven't tried to disassemble BD." BD makes a scared sounding beep and you let him climb onto your shoulder.
"Don't worry I'd never let him do that to you." Looking back at Din you notice that he did start on the repairs.
"Did you get along?" You teasingly ask Din and he says nothing.
"I'm going to check on the child." He says as he stands up. You laugh as he leaves, looking back at BD with a smile.
"I think he's starting to warm up to you." "No!" You hear him yell and you shake your head. For the next week or so things went back to normal. Though you noticed Din started to refer to BD by his name instead of "it" so you call that an improvement.
"Hey have you seen BD I need-" You stop as you enter the cockpit.
Din sits silently at the controls, staring into the stars as he navigates to the next bounty. But what surprises you is BD sitting on top of the console. Curled up and watching Din with interest. It's shocking to say the least.
"Well well well." Din could hear the grin on your face as he stays facing away from you.
"Don't." He says and you smile even wider.
"Come on BD, I need your help." The droid hops down and follows you out the door. Once the door closes he breathes out a small sigh.
He still hates droids, but maybe this one isn't that bad.

Just realized modern C.al's into dangerous sports like bouldering, snowboarding, Kyokushin Karate, Kendo, and airsoft. And also loves racing and drifting.
This dog would be on the sidelines if he can't be directly following C.al.
But ayo the thought of Batcher / BD following C.al when he's snowboarding is a thought that warms my heart.
PTSD, car accidents mention below
C.al's PTSD stems from a car accident he was in when he was 10. The car ended up flipped over onto its top on the side of the road. I think his PTSD would get triggered during minor car accidents and forceful impact that knocks him off balance / off his feet. So to think that Batcher / BD would be following him when possible during risky sports, including snowboarding and excluding airsoft because they're generally not allowed on the field unless they're used to locate enemies & then are taken off field, is so endearing to me.

Since my therapist managed to piece up together that I've been made to feel wrong about all my choices and even some facets of myself, now I want to tell her about a certain patten I've noticed about the kinds of stories I like and tend to write
Shadow and him falling victim to Black Doom's manipulations - my favorite story with him being Remember which is all about him being trapped in BD's reconstruction of that day at the ARK
Surge and her being painfully aware that everything about her personality and desires is fake - she is unable to trust herself and her own choices, but she doesn't know anything else, it's all she has and she cannot break away
Hector and everything about being stuck under Dracula, a hell of his own making but a making out of desperation and need for love, only looking for safety and power but being forced to be an instrument of death, fighting his hardest to run away and become his own person
(side note: my perpetual rage at how NFCV fucked up this very simple concept when it came to him, as it accidentally implies that trapping someone can be a good and forgivable thing, actually - oh how much i want to fix this)
Lapis and Jasper trapping each other as Malachite, feeding over their mutual hatred until they became addicted to it; and when they got separated, Lapis struggled to find her freedom while Jasper longed to chain herself once more
Angel Dust and being constantly abused by his own boss/pimp, knowing fully well that he went to Hell because of his own crimes and he became a pornstar to indulge in his vices - "what's the worst part of this Hell? I can only blame myself"
Majima and his entire story in Yakuza 0 being a dog on a leash in a gilded cage, used as a tool for a grander plan, who needs to break free and he does so by becoming a wild dog
Klint van Zieks and his entire deal of snapping under the corruption of the British justice system and his righteous anger becoming a collar around his neck for Stronghart to yank at his leisure and turn him into a murder dog (get it because he kills people by siccing his hound at them)
I see a pattern. A very obvious one :P
(also that day I had a dream that I was travelling with a dog that didn't want to be with us, so someone trapped it under a box and you could hear the dog trying to claw its way out. Again, something I might need to say)

I love the Ghost Hunters AU and I really want more of Salem. Especially Salem with the Milkovich siblings.
🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 thank you. ive always wanted a black cat named either princess or salem and i thought it would make sense since its a ghost hunter au (even tho i skipped over all the ghost stuff so my post wasnt a million words long) with terry not around i feel like the milkoviches would love playing with animals. Salem is a very adventurous, people-loving cat! you know, the kind of cat people say were a dog in their past life. of course she loves the gallaghers too! even carl makes a point to be nice to her (after, when she was a kitten, ian beat him up for making a joke) but the milkoviches dont really get to show affection ever, so they love getting to play with her and scratch her lil belly and give her treats they stole from the pet store. they all adore her but ofc after ian and mickey get together and he comes over to the gallaghers a shitton, mickey becomes her 2nd dad. he goes to the top of her favorite people list. nobody else plays with her the way he does! hes not afraid to get a little rough, but he knows whats signs to look out for when a cat is not playing/irritated. shes still young and she loves playing!! imagine toddlers who like getting thrown around because its fun, shes like that. she gets kicked out and put in a different room when they fuck, and she uses this time to get in as much trouble as possible, knock shit over, and annoy anyone else in the house. ALSO she LOVES liam!! they literally grow up together and fiona teaches him how to treat animals so by the time hes like 5, she moves from sleeping with ian to sleeping with liam
i imagined ian and mandy meeting at the same time, so when salem is 2 that would be s3 ish. when he first found her, ian had just started his job and scrounged up every penny he could find to take her to a low cost clinic to get spayed and vaxxed. other than being skinny and dehydrated (and ofc separated from her mom as a kitten) she was in surprisingly good shape! now shes so used to being spoiled by everyone! ian LOVES taking care of others and being of service so he really found a home in Salem, treating her like his kid and giving her the best life possible. i definitely think once he gets diagnosed with BD, he pays (with mostly mickeys money lbr) for her to be his emotional support animal and takes her to as many pet friendly places at possible!
like i said she becomes kinda the mascot of the ghost hunting youtube channel they eventually start. its not something they see as a career or anything, they do it as a hobby, but they gain decent attraction and make extra money on the side from ads and a few brand deals. ofc Salem is the reason everyone watches the channel 🙄 she's in pretty much every video, and they chose her as their icon bc 1. black cat spooky duh 2. she brought them together 🥺 3. she really does show up A LOT in videos, especially when they're not urban exploring/hunting and at home recording the historical backgrounds and debriefings for each location. also yes they do urban exploring as well, thats mainly mickey and mickey and whatever milkovich wants to tag along and graffiti an abandoned building. imagine a combination of The Watcher and Dan Bell (omfg now im imagining them doing Another Dirty Room???? 😭 they would be so offended at paying money for rooms worse than their own back in the southside) but with less production value
ok omg i wrote so much im gonna stop now before i go off the rails again. how did i fall in love with this random ass au from a trope generator. reminder that i accidentally deleted the og post so it wont turn up in searches unless youre on my blog or the blog of anyone else who rbed it :)

Here's some 👀
Name me several general headcanons you have for a few characters of your choice! 🎉
Sorry for the delayness of this answer buuuuuut…WEEEEEELLLLLL
- Buena Girl is Autistic!♾ tbh i had this hc for a very long time and i still think its pretty neat (wait wait, i have something better, EVERYONE IN MUCHA LUCHA IS AUTISTIC♾)
- The Teachers (Sr. Hasbeena, Mr. Midcarda & Headmistress.) have been best friends since childhood (like the three mascaritas) i like to imagine that sometimes after a long day at working at the school, the 3 would hang out at some place (like a karaoke place or smth), and sometimes midcarda would invite custodio, fundador and kurtz, thus making three plus three equals six (yep, you guessed it, the 6 would hang out at times)
- Speaking of the teachers i also personally think that sometimes on breaks, the school faculty would dance to the songs that hasbeena frequently listens to (mostly 70s music like blue swede, earth, wind and fire, the trammps, baccara, etc.) and even sometimes would sing them out loud, because the songs are so fricking catchy lol.
-Masked dog is actually adopted! i liked to imagine that rik found masked dog in a box when he was 6 or 7, rik was surprised to see the puppy in that box and he took it happily to his house and he introduced it to his mama and abuelo, uhhhhh yeah, and the story goes on and on, and that’s how masked dog is the family’s pet now!
-El Gundamo is secretly a Puffy AmiYumi fan (well he shares this secret with double ninja ninja and sonic sumo).
-While not mentioned in the show, Buena mom and Bueno Dad met somewhere in 1974. (i imagine that bd’s car broke and bm saw it and she came to fix it for a few hours, also they talked and talked and talked for hours, so thats how they met!) aaaaaand the flea’s parents met somewhere in the late 70s-early 80s (they met at a bar or smth like that), if mama maniaca and lonestar met while they were searching for mm’s ll4e necklace… why not make backstories for bg’s and the flea’s parents respectively :)
That’s all the headcanons i have in my mind! it was a looooong wall of text but it was worthy!

March 31 - 2024 Sunday
10:56pm
6.5/10
This morning I treated myself in the shower. I For breakfast I had left over rice a roni and I ate it while I watched youtube. I debated whether or not I wanted to start a hardcore Mario stream like I had planned yesterday and I figured since I bought the game, I should start it. So I streamed it for a couple hours while I drank my coffee. I only died and had to start over twice and made it all the way to world 3-2. One guy showed up to chat and it seemed like he just perused the Mario category. I played until I got bored. When I was done, I relaxed with some more video and put on Mulan while I tried to make lunch. For lunch I was hoping to make something edible from beef stock, beans, and cut up hot dog with some vegetables but I made something borderline inedible so I dumped it out. Instead I ate a granola bar, fruit cup, and some salt and vinegar chips. Watching Mulan was good, I had completely forgotten the movie. Its one of those female focused movies that really screams how much I care about the female struggle. Not only that but also how her other big thing was trying to feel worthy despite who she was. These are things I wouldn't have picked up on as a kid and probably not even 3 years ago. After Mulan I put on a stream and played Stardew for about 3-4 hours. That was chill. When I got bored, I didn't know what I wanted to do. I wanted to stick to the usual and get in VR for drinking time but I didn't feel like socializing. I ended up getting on in desktop and had a great time, I just needed to warm up a bit. I hung out with BD and her friend. I was noticing how much he tries to retain her attention and also how he frequently pushes her boundaries, as in not taking no for an answer. Like he's always on the attack somehow. I've been noticing that in general lately. It's gotten so much easier to pick up when someone is being confrontational towards someone else, even if subtly. Maybe because it's behavior I've learned will stack on itself until it becomes toxic, I have experience with that. It all centers around what someone's boundaries are and how well the enforce them. DV joined us at some point and I talked with him about his server and how he wants to operate it going forward since there has been a lot of change. Someone annoying joined our group throughout the night, another person that only seems to oppose anything anyone says even if it's under the guise of a "joke".
~~~
I felt pretty content today. For a big chunk of it, I was okay being alone where I usually feel lonely or like I should be socializing. The truth is I just didn't want to today and it worked out. I also didn't feel guilt regarding my productivity. I'd say for the first time in a long time, this was a very good weekend. The kind of weekend where I actually do dread Monday.
(76-90 albums etc that I’ve listened to this year, copied from twitter) (now with art. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7])
names and thoughts below cut
76/ Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible (2001) one of the more explicitly pro-toke albums ive heard in a minute. but this includes dub and psy elements. good times, though not my fav shpongle showing i think… weirdly i hear mazedude in this. i suspect hes a fan.
---
77/ Gescom - Skull Snap EP (2011) like hip hop fed through turn of the century ukidm like taffy. crunchy mechanical taffy. engrossing.
---
78/ Sword of the Far East - 序章 (2011) p sure sam rec'd this to me AGES ago. well im finally listening and: hot damn that's some slappy violin "長い雨" standout personal fav hgoly shit
---
79/ Long Arm - Organic (2011) delicious triphop texture. chillhop? idk. great for today's rainy afternoon.
---
80/ 100 gecs - 10,000 gecs (2023) fun! i think my fav tracks already appeared on youtube except 1mil dollars, which is "simpler" but fun!
---
81/ Antagonist - Rites EP (2023) dark night, hazy lights. a lovely soundscape to envelop me.
---
82/ DJ Girl - Hellworld (2023) revisiting all the cool vibes that i felt when discovering juke. i think the opening track is my fav. get down!
---
83/ Culprate - 5 Star EP (2011) man i love this sound design. wheres that italian emoji……. 🤌
---
84/ Bomb Strikes - Into Battle EP Volume 3 (2011) i think ive sort of oversaturated myself with these. but yet, sometimes… the funk still hits just right. im calling out the AA side specifically.
---
85/ VA - Boys Noize Pres. Super Acid (2011) acid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to varying degrees. highlight: "Death Suite (Erol Alkan Edit)"!!!! "Uranus" also.
---
86/ Culprate - Colours (2011) for some reason this doesnt hit me as hard as culprate usually does..? despite that, it's still filled with really fun sound design. it feels like culprate's take on psytrance sans trance. a journey. always feel sus when i like the last track most :I
---
87/ IJO - The Easy Listener (2011) soft jungle jazz. or rather, it has a lot of empty space. just enough to hear the ice melt in your glass between the notes. (im saying this is nice) leans into squarepusher timbre. gotta put it next to him and Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combo
---
88/ The Black Dog - Liber Dogma (2011) deep dark tech no. more deep than bleep, oddly enough. (BD seems to be spearheading a bleep revival.) its been perfect for me as ive been slowly knocking out some work these past few days
---
89/ Big Bud - Kool Beans (2011) (ive decided to be extra harsh against dnb) for the most part this almost vibes with me but… eh. the last few tracks drift away from dnb, which i enjoy more. especially the almost future-garage-esque "Righteous Dub"
---
90/ BLÆRG - Everything Was Altered (2011) i had an itch for some twitchy perc breakcore and this hit the spot. of course, there's much more than that. a smoothness. it's good.
Gakuen Bungou Stray Dogs - The First Half (Part 1/?)
Links to other parts: Part 2
I decided to do a translation of the au novel that was included as a bonus in the DVD/BD of the anime. The novel is called Gakuen Bungou Stray Dogs (Bungou Stray Dogs School) and is consisted of 2 parts, the first half is included in DVD/BD Vol 2 and the second half is in Vol 8. It is about 80 pages in total. It has also been adapted into a story in the game Bungou Stray Dogs: Tales of the Lost so you may find the story familiar.
Below is some of the notes I would like to read before proceeding.
- Please buy the DVD/BD to support the authors if you can.
- I don't mind if you use bits of it for analysis or credits, but do not repost the whole thing out of Tumblr.
- Feel free to retranslate it if you want, but keep in mind that my translation is not perfect as I am not fluent in neither English nor Japanese.
- I am translating casually at my pace so I can't promise when the next part will come out. But I will make time for it when I can.
That's it. Happy reading!
The season of dancing cherry blossoms.
A boy is running along the road to his school.
The boy’s name is Nakajima Atsushi. An ordinary high school student who came to this school with his great ambitions, and with nothing special except for his noticeable white hair.
It is seven in the morning.
He is running down the sloppy way leading to the school, out of breath.
He is going to be late.
It was a bad idea to take a shortcut by a different route than usual just because he overslept a little. To make matter worse, he just started living in this Yokohama this month and it is still a strange land to him. Sometimes, he still forgets the route to school that he just managed to remember one week ago, yet he decided to go straight for a steep bank thinking it would be a shortcut. That was his first mistake. Where is this place? He has no idea.
Atsushi deeply regrets it. At this rate, his brand-new uniform will be stained with mud from the bank. He has to make it in time for homeroom at any cost.
That thought makes Atsushi a little restless. Using the school spire that can be seen from anywhere in the area as a landmark, he continues to run forward blindly. That is the second mistake. He could have just asked someone how to get to the main gate of the school, instead of running a straight line towards such a landmark like a spire. That is because for Atsushi, it is somewhat embarrassing to ask others for directions.
Eventually, Atsushi arrives at the school.
He has arrived but he cannot get in. Because the place he arrives at is the back of the school.
In response to the recent increase in security awareness, the back of the school is now surrounded by a high steel fence. This must be behind the gym, Atsushi takes a guess. It is a long way to the back gate, even farther to the front gate. This is bad, Atsushi finally realizes. The clock on the spire that he can barely see from here tells him that the class is about to start.
There is no choice but to climb up. Atsushi decides.
That is his third mistake.
Atsushi grabs his fingers through the gaps of the black iron fence, and climbs up like a gecko, while making sure not to tear his uniform.
Atsushi has no great strength nor outstanding talent, but he is super strong physically for some reasons. Just like a wild animal, he easily climbs over the fence and lands on the school ground. He makes a weird sound upon landing but fortunately for him, as he looks around, no one seems to have heard it.
It is April now. The rows of cherry trees in the campus are literally singing the spring songs of the world. The flower petals are dancing just like in a movie set. Atsushi runs to the school building.
Then he passes by a huge cherry tree.
It is a magnificent tree. Its overhanging branches are three times the length of those of the other trees. The flower petals tremble in the refreshing morning breeze of spring.
This is where he makes his forth, also his biggest mistake.
He stops there.
Because an unbelievable thing catches his eyes.
From the tree whose outline are highlighted even more by the backlight, something is hanging down.
Or, more precisely, “someone”.
Ah, this is something I should not see. Atsushi thinks reflexively.
The thing which is hanging down from the giant tree by something like a rope, no matter how he looks at it, is not a big bagworm. It is too big for that. It is swaying in the wind and squeaking like a heavy pendulum.
He should have ignored it and walked away but Atsushi reflexively stands still.
And thanks to that, he is able to observe that “someone” more closely.
That is a tall person. Messy hair. From the fluttering uniform, he seems to be a student of this school too. The rope is completely hooked around his neck.
Atsushi’s heart is thumping so hard it hurts. Cold sweats are gathering on his chin.
I have to call the teachers. No, I have to report it first. No, ambulance first!
Atsushi takes out the cellphone that he just learnt to use recently and tries to make a call with his confused brain and his trembling fingers. Wha.. What should I do? Wait a minute, what number is 119?
At that moment, the body starts speaking.
“Woaaaaahhhh…. I slept so well.”
He says so as he swiftly unties the rope and drops himself straight to the ground.
“Gyahhh!!!” Atsushi unconsciously lets out a strange voice in shock.
The tall person tosses away the rope that was tied around his neck, stretches his back, cracks his neck and suddenly strikes a pose by himself. That’s when he notices Atsushi.
“Hey you over there.” The person says, “Yes, you. I’m talking to you.”
Atsushi nervously looks around, praying that the guy is calling to someone rather than himself. However, there is no one but him here.
“You. Put your phone away.”
Atsushi looks at his hand. The phone he was trying to use, is now dialing.
“Huh? Eh? Ah?”
“I told you. Could you please turn it off? I’ve had this a lot. This kind of misunderstanding.”
“M…misunderstanding?”
“What were you trying to do?”
Atsushi is pathetically honest. When he is asked, he answers honestly. “What? … I was trying to call an ambulance…”
“Where is that person who looks like he needs an ambulance here?”
Atsushi finally gets it.
The young man in front of him acts as if nothing has happened. Even though no matter how you look at it, he clearly was putting a rope around the cherry tree to try do… “that”. Even though the red traces of the rough rope are still there on his neck.
What the hell is this? What does this even mean?
“It’s a pain, you know. People like you who made hasty judgements and misread the situation. There are bad days when I was offered flowers and steamed bun under my feet.”
“Eh?“
“I just ate the buns.”
“No, no, not that.” Atsushi waves his hands exaggeratedly. “You said it was a misunderstanding… so that means you were not ha…hanging yourself?”
“I was hanging myself.”
“What?”
“Hanging for health.”
Ahhh… So that’s why…
Atsushi is almost convinced for one second, before he jumps up and says, “There is no such thing!”
“If you don’t know, I will tell you. I have been obsessed with suicide ever since I was a kid. Drowning, jumping, electrocuting. I have tried all kinds of suicide methods, that my body ended up developing a tolerance to suicide. Just a slight and little lethal dose won’t be able to kill me anymore. It can’t be helped so I have no choice but to hang on the trees in the campus every day to sleep. It is super convenient because I don’t have to go to and from school. It is also easier to fall asleep. In addition, it has so many benefits, such as stretching your spine, improving blood circulation, removing toxins, and activating the immune system. You should definitely give it a try.”
“I won’t.”
“People say it a lot, you know: If it is for your health, it is okay to die.”
“No one says that!”
Atsushi is confused to no end. This person looks completely fine. But he doesn’t understand anything other than that. He has an idea that the other was telling him that everything was okay because it was not a suicide and also explained the reason to him, but the explanation part just slips right off the surface of his brain, leaving him totally clueless in the end.
At that moment, the first bell rings, indicating that classes are going to start. Atsushi comes back to his sense.
“Nooo! I’m late!”
He jumps up, remembering the situation he is in. “I’m late for class!”
“What? You are getting all worked up about such a thing?”
“Such a thing” is quite a way to put it, Atsushi thinks to himself. Judging from the uniform, this guy must be a student of this school, too. If so, shouldn’t he be just as rushed as Atsushi when the bell rings? As he gives the young man in the uniform that look, the other smiles suggestively.
“It makes sense if you are late for half a day. But this much? There is no need to rush. Okay then, this is not my paying back for causing you troubles, but I will teach you my method to prevent being late.”
“Huh?”
Method to prevent being late? A question mark pops up above Atsushi’s head.
There is no preventive measure for people who are about to be late at this very moment. The first bell just now was to mark two minutes before the start of class. Even if he runs from here, he will not be able to make it in two minutes. This is not something that can be solved with a little preparation or tricks.
“What is your name?”
The young man points at him, so honest Atsushi answers honestly.
“Nakajima… Atsushi.”
“Come with me, Atsushi-kun. My name is Dazai Osamu.”
Dazai Osamu. Atsushi repeats the name in his head.
“You look like a new student, right? Then let’s go, to our school.” The young man named Dazai chuckles as he says that.
“Let me tell you about the many strange and bizarre people of this school, and suicide enthusiast is not even one of them.”
Somehow Atsushi feels as if he has been fooled by a fox.
He will eventually understand.
That “the many strange and bizarre people of this school” is neither a metaphor nor an exaggeration, it is literally what it sounds.
***
A scary thing has happened.
Things went exactly as Dazai said.
Atsushi entered the class a whole 30 minutes late, yet he received no scolding nor punishment. He smoothly went in like the air, and after exchanging a word or two with the teacher, he was assigned to his seat with no problem.
Atsushi looks at the piece of paper in his hand as if he is daydreaming.
A tardy slip.
That is what Dazai gave Atsushi.
The document clearly states that his late arrival is reasonable, with the signature of the teacher giving permission. It has today’s date and Atsushi’s name, too. It is a genuine certificate, no matter how you look at it. As long as Atsushi has this, his late arrival will be treated as fair.
This must be magic.
How in the world could Dazai prepare this kind of document?
The mere sight of someone hanging themselves first thing in the morning is quite enough for a traumatic event that can scar the witness for the rest of his life. But to see the hanging person come out completely fine and cast some kind of magic to turn his late arrival into nothing? No one would believe that. Who in the world is that student Dazai? Is he even real?
In the mean time, the morning class passes by in a flash.
The boy sitting next to Atsushi in class was sleeping the whole time. He is a classmate called Miyazawa Kenji. He was sleeping with an extremely peaceful face and showed no sign of waking up even during recess. He looked so relaxed. Is he okay? Why is no one waking him up? Atsushi felt a little restless but Kenji finally woke up just before noon as his stomach started to growl. And after that he was taking classes so normally and happily. It seems that he didn’t sleep in class because he is a delinquent or a rebel. He just slept because he was sleepy.
How wonderful it would to be if I could live like that, Atsushi thinks.
Just like that, the morning passes and the bell rings for the lunch break. While everyone starts leaving their seats one by one to go for lunch, all of a sudden, the math teacher who has been teaching the class until just now approaches Atsushi and says.
“Nakajima Atsushi. Come to the staff room. I have something to talk to you.”
For someone who sees himself as an ordinary and timid high school student like Atsushi, being summoned to the staff room must be the biggest incident of the century. He may look like this, but he is just a shy boy who has been keeping his head low and walking as quietly as possible just so as not to cause troubles or be noticed by the teachers or the delinquents, even since he attended this school one week ago. Now that he is being called to the staff room by himself and having absolutely no hint why he was being summoned, he cannot keep his calm at all. Atsushi’s temperature drops steadily. His arms and legs are shivering, and the long tuft of hair on his right ears is shaking with fear.
“Excuse me.”
Everyone in the staff room looks at Atsushi as he makes a 90-degree bow and enters the room. That alone is enough to make him break out in cold sweat.
Atsushi tries to stand firm on his shaking legs and walks toward the math teacher that called out to him a while ago.
“What can I do for you, Kunikida-sensei?”
As Atsushi says so, the teacher, who is sipping Japanese tea, glares up at him.
“What can you do for me?”
The math teacher called Kunikida looked at Atsushi with the sharp eyes behind his glasses. That is the gaze of Kunikida-sensei, known as one of the most terrifying looks among the teachers’ in this school. Female students who try to start a normal conversation with him end up crying sometimes. His rectangle glasses do not help with softening the atmosphere at all.
“Nakajima Atsushi, right?” Kunikida-sensei speaks slowly as he sits on his chair. “What is your relationship with Dazai?”
“… Eh?”
The question comes from such an unexpected direction that Atsushi, who was just called to the staff room and met with such scary eyes that he was thinking of crying, can’t get it for a moment.
“I said Dazai. Don’t tell me you have forgotten. Didn’t you get this tardy slip from him today?”
Now he remembers. About the magic tardy slip that has saved him from being late today, and the authorization signature of the teacher in charge. It is no doubt Kunikida-sensei in front of him, whose name is written there. In other words, Dazai has had this Kunikida-sensei write that tardy slip?
Come to think of it, he is pretty sure that Dazai said he was going to get a tardy slip for himself too, which means this Kunikida-sensei has issued the tardy slips for both Dazai and Atsushi.
Tardy slips can be issued only for unavoidable reasons, such as sudden illnesses, events, or family issues. There are no justifiable reasons for Atsushi, who was late because he arrived at the back door and had to climb up the fence, or Dazai, who was just hanging himself on the cherry tree. In other words, this Kunikida-sensei has issued a justifiable tardy slip for Atsushi’s unjustifiable late arrival.
For what?
He doesn’t know.
Atsushi thinks about it, but he can’t understand, so he expresses his gratefulness without thinking much. “Thank you for issuing the tardy slip for me.”
“Thanking me for what?” Kunikida pounds the table. Atsushi jumps up.
“Are you one of his kind, brat? He is a demon who always pulls out my weaknesses from absolutely groundless sources and threatens me for tardy slips. Every time he appears out of nowhere, he shatters my plans and my ideals into pieces before disappearing again. The other day, he appeared right before my payday and somehow found out how much I was paid and even used a mistake I made on the night of the teachers’ year end party to threaten me and…”
Kunida suddenly stops as he notices the looks and whispering from the surrounding.
Then he stays still for a moment as if his battery has run out, before letting out a big cough.
“Anyway.”
“Yes?”
I want to hear a bit more of that story, Atsushi thinks.
“His… Dazai’s personal conduct is an eyesore to me. But he always has his escape route prepared and manages to get away cunningly. On top of it, he has a position in this school, so even teachers cannot expel him as we wish.
“Position?”
“This.”
Kunikida says as he holds out a piece of paper.
That paper, printed in an official layout, shows the activities records as well as incomes and expenditures report of a certain organization.
“Student Council…”
“I am the advisor there.”
Atsushi stares at the name of that Student Council.
What a strange name for a student council. That’s what he thinks.
The paper has the names of the Student Council members written on it. And Dazai is one of them.
“I have been thinking about this for a long time. I need a bell on Dazai’s neck.”
“A bell?”
“A bell that rings when he moves. His methods are deeply-rooted and unbelievably ingenious that there is nothing I can do to punish him. For the time being, I will put you under his wing, brat. Report to me when he tries to do anything.”
Atsushi makes a face showing he is troubled and wants to refuse. Kunikida who sensibly observes that tells him that he will cancel today’s tardy slip if he refuses. Atsushi therefore has no way to retreat.
Still, Atsushi thinks to himself.
A group with that Dazai as a member, and with a name that smells danger on top of that. This student council might not be an ordinary organization at all.
The innate animal instinct sends a chill through his back, making him shiver. It is the right intuition.
Atsushi then takes another glance at the name of the student council written on the paper.
“Armed Student Council”.
Oh, let me continue the subject of the jealousy of these two. You're saying that Johnny isn't the type to hold back when it comes to emotions. And it really is. But... there is a moment in the game when V talks about his exes or about stupid compliments in a conversation with River. And Johnny doesn't say anything. I would write it off as a scenario move, so as not to shift the focus from the River. But this isn't the only time Johnny ignores events in this quest line. See the second question
Part 2 for context:  So... I continue. Do you remember the moment when you watched brain damage and lost consciousness, when you and River were searching for clues about the mayor's murder? Johnny never ignored the moments when V passed out. Here River comes to the rescue, and you would think that he knows that there is someone to help and nothing to worry about ...But in similar situations with Judy and Panam, he would appear and deliver his moralizing remarks or make snide comments. 🤔
Personally, I do believe this is sort of a meta issue. I’ve talked about it a little bit before in a general post; how given his characterization, Johnny does not in my opinion talk as much as he should. In a more comedic example, I mentioned how could anyone honestly look me in the eye and say that Johnny wouldn’t have a comment on the guy with the exploding penis implant????  Like Johnny is majorly characterized as a guy who can’t leave well enough alone and always has something to say; yet theres a fairly large percentage of gigs and missions and moments where you’d think Johnny would have something to say and he doesn’t. There’s also times where lines are blatantly reused and in a jarring way.
Like, I could be wrong, but I think they reuse him saying “There it is” with both V getting Nibbles and a man committing suicide in a gig. Like?????
Meta wise, I do think it’s partially a fear of over incorporating Johnny to the point players found him annoying. Because even now, some people find him irritating and wish he’d talk less. So, that could be a factor. The idea of not sidelining love interests is a factor of course. While, he has commentary through out each love interests questlines. He always does mostly bugger off during the romantic lead up and the actual kiss then sex. Because well, it might be a bit of a buzzkill and if you’re trying to get laid and Methed Out Future Keanu Reeves is yelling at you from the corner of the room. I mean, it’d probably enhance my experience but some people aren’t into that.
As for why stuff like, him ignoring V getting zapped by the braindance in River’s quest. I’ve always thought that was ooc. Like, short of potentially the bd having fried him up for a bit, kinda like the emp blast does when V and Panam take down the AV. But overall, over and over again, Johnny is shown to be the first one there when V gets hurt. Even if its to yell at them for going into the toxic water or he waits a beat to appear once Panam is done looking over V.
And that could be because they potentially again wanted to give more attention to River or... and I always hate to get into this sort of discourse, cause I know it aggravates some people. It was an oversight, something not caught, something not thought of, just because to be fair...River has the least polished questline of the love interests. The male love interests in general imo were sidelined more. But, River A) has the least amount of quests to build up to his romance, B) is the most easily missable love interest since he’s not even required to meet for the secret ending the way Kerry is. and C) this could just be my own personal experience, maybe cyberpunk 2077 provides unique bugs for everyone, but his quests are the buggiest for me.
And to be perfectly clear, this is not me being a dick to River. Do, I think some aspects of his character are kinda tone deaf, sure, but I like River. I think he’s a sweetheart, who’s usually pretty stiff, but has his cuter jokey moments and is a puppy dog underneath.  I love doing his quests because they’re truly very emotional, being able to help his family. Like, being able to save Randy is one of the best feelings in the game to me, knowing you saved him and so many other young boys. That’s why it honestly breaks my heart to see how little polish and attention his quests were given. From the calls glitching, him not staying on comms in the first quest, Johnny in my game doesn’t even give the dialogue warning my V about River wanting to sleep with her, like it just does not show up for me, The cobbled together family photo. The weird pacing of the romance that goes from 0 to a 100. Randy’s face glitches and clips through the mask when you’re saving him. Like the concept, the investigation, the intense stakes, and the emotional impact of his quest are all so good; but CDPR just did not in my opinion take enough time with it.
So, maybe they didn’t bother to script and put Johnny in that scene despite it being something he’d most definitely pop in for; cause they just didn’t take their time with it like they could have/should have.
And in regard to Johnny in universe and talking; while like I said he’s more upfront and direct with his anger and side comments that he uses to hide his real feelings. I do think, especially if its post oils field convo, a part of him tries desperately to bite his tongue and just sit with his feelings if he think its best for V. In the more love dovey romance moment with River, I could see him being like, “okay, V wants this, as much as it pisses me off, V deserves to have some good in their life” and tries to hold back and be good and then five seconds later “CANT BELIEVE YOU’RE GONNA MAKE ME FUCK A COP” cause he can only behave for so long.
And I do wanna note; I am by no means consider myself a Johnny Silverhand expert. I’ve said this before, his characterization and just him as a person can be very messy, very all over the place, and contradictory at times. He can try to kill V and then the next day pop up to chat with them in a diner and be like “why aren’t you happy to see me?????? you still mad?????? its been a whole ass 5 hrs since I told you to kill yourself and bashed your head into a window, gotta learn to let shit go dude.” So, sometimes I worry I’m making him ooc, but its fun nontheless, so.
A New Challenger Approaches!: Evaluating the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism
Yet another antisemitism framework has emerged, with the release of the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA) signed by around two hundred Jewish Studies scholars. This, of course, comes rapidly on the heels of the Nexus document on antisemitism (of which I was one of the drafters), meaning we now have two new antisemitism frameworks standing as potential complements (or alternatives) to the venerable IHRA definition.
The other day I made a handy table summarizing the similarities and differences between the three definitions. That was designed to be a pretty straightforward, "just the facts" presentation. But I also want to give my evaluative judgment on the Jerusalem Declaration in comparison to IHRA and Nexus (I wrote more on the Nexus document, specifically, in this post). Obviously, the fact that I was a Nexus author means I have a dog in this hunt, though I don't view these definitions as in competition with one another. And likewise, I don't have direct knowledge of the background and genesis of the Jerusalem Declaration in the same way I do for the Nexus document -- some of my comments will be based on inference and speculation. So take them with however much salt you think is appropriate.
This is a somewhat long post, divided roughly into three parts. First, I address differences in the orientation of the JDA compared to the other frameworks -- who wrote and who their audience is. Second, I examine the JDA's relationship to IHRA -- particularly IHRA as a symbol of (depending on who you ask) rallying against antisemitism or creating toxic policing of discourse on Israel -- and how that is mediating the reception (both positive and negative) of the JDA. Finally, I address where the JDA is substantively different from the other frameworks and where it isn't. Likewise, I identify a few important areas that neither the JDA nor IHRA address that are included in the Nexus document: the inclusion of conditions (alongside attitudes and behaviors) as a potential form of antisemitism, recognizing and objecting to the practice of routine and reflexive dismissal of antisemitism claims, and addressing how Jews who take the "wrong" (however defined) position on Israel see their Jewish identity denigrated or denied -- a form of harassment that especially targets Jews of Color.
I. The JDA's Orientation
At the outset, there are a few core differences in the orientation of the JDA in comparison to the Nexus document -- who wrote it and what it is targeting. The JDA has more of a European center of gravity, whereas the Nexus is more American; the JDA is primarily endorsed by academics, whereas the Nexus document was geared more towards "community leader" sorts. Obviously, these are generalizations -- the JDA has American signatories, the Nexus document had academics involved (such as myself). But I think these broad-stroke differences exert a noticeable impact in terms of what is and isn't prioritized, and who was and wasn't sought to be "included" in the definition.
In particular, the JDA seems to have been very invested in coming up with a definition that could get non- or anti-Zionists onboard alongside at least liberal Zionists (getting a document signed by Susannah Heschel and Richard Falk is no mean feat!). In doing so, the JDA gives the non-Zionist contingent a few very big wins: it expressly declares BDS not antisemitic, and it more or less declares calls for the dissolution of Israel to be not antisemitic (the constraint is that any alternative polity that is envisioned must be one that protects "the right of Jews in the State of Israel [or, I imagine, its hypothetical successor] to exist and flourish, collectively and individually, as Jews"). The Nexus document, by contrast, had as its target audience (more or less) the median American Jew -- envisioned as a Biden-style Democrat who identifies as broadly Zionist and pro-Israel but has his or her fair share of criticism. Accordingly, the Nexus doesn't speak directly on BDS, implicitly judging it by the other standards in the document, and contains a more robust defense of the right of Jewish self-determination than is present in the JDA (it is notable that challenging Israel's "right to exist" is viewed as antisemitic by an extremely wide consensus of American Jews -- more so than almost any other issue).
The JDA's audience is thus simultaneously broader and narrower than the Nexus': it reaches non-Zionist activists for whom it is exceedingly important that challenging Israel's existence as a Jewish state not be labeled antisemitic, but in doing so it may have language that's a veritable poison pill for rank-and-file Jews (at least in the US). The Nexus document was meant to be a viable set of guidelines for a Democratic administration that would let them handle antisemitism controversies while avoiding obvious shoals and pitfalls. The JDA (and I think this is true even if one agrees with it on its merits) would be more likely to provoke controversy simply because of its explicit language on BDS and its position that denying Jewish self-determination in Israel is not necessarily antisemitic. The JDA is I think more valuable as a tool of public discourse than something that could be "adopted" by a particular organization, especially (say) the Democratic Party (and the JDA is quite explicit that it is not meant to be adopted or codified as any explicit legal tool).
II. The Symbolism of IHRA
Speaking of provoking controversy, another defining feature of the JDA is its explicitly antagonistic posture towards IHRA. The Nexus document sought to position itself as primarily an interpretive resource -- a complement where IHRA was vague or incomplete (as Jonathan Jacoby put it, IHRA is the Mishnah and Nexus is the Gemara). The JDA, by contrast, is very much taking aim at the king. As I mentioned in my post on the Nexus document, IHRA has taken on such symbolic weight that one can generate almost reflexive support and opposition for a given initiative simply by presenting as a challenge to IHRA, and that's definitely occurring here. People who hate IHRA are cheering the JDA simply because it's the "anti-IHRA", even when their own conduct would seemingly be obviously indicted under the JDA's definition. As noted above, Richard Falk is a signatory even though he's endorsed materials which seem to cleanly fall under categories the JDA deems antisemitic. Jackie Walker praised the JDA too even though her antisemitism likewise would be covered by the JDA. It's doubtful that such persons are backing the JDA as a mea culpa for their past misconduct; rather, they see the JDA as a counter to IHRA's putative "weaponization" of antisemitism and endorse it on that basis. If or when the JDA does get cited to label them as antisemitic, I suspect they will be just as dismissive as they've been in the past.
Arguably, then, just like IHRA there is a risk that the JDA will be "applied" in a purely symbolic manner divorced from its actual textual mandates. Just as IHRA's language insisting that context matters has been roundly ignored, one can easily imagine persons accused of antisemitism "citing" the JDA for the blithe retort that "criticism of Israel is not antisemitic" while disregarding language in the JDA which arguably encompasses their particular "critique". As always, one suspects the most important interpretive canon in accept or applying any definition of antisemitism will be the overriding principle "me and my friends are not antisemitic."
The hegemony of IHRA's symbolism doesn't just afflict the JDA's defenders. IHRA's advocates also have gotten so invested in the importance of IHRA as a marker for "taking antisemitism seriously" that they are often unwilling to recognize IHRA has quite a few serious gaps and ambiguities. The core definition itself is nearly useless ("A certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews" -- what does that mean?), and the illustrative examples, while helpful as far as they go (and IHRA itself says they only go so far as to be cases which "could, taking into account the overall context," be antisemitic), are significantly underinclusive even leaving aside IHRA's relative lack of guidance on what "context" can be used to assess whether any given speech or behavior that abuts one of the examples actually is antisemitic. As a symbolic gesture where a given organization says "we care about antisemitism", IHRA can stand alone (in large part because for that function it doesn't matter what IHRA says). As an actual substantive tool for identifying antisemitism, IHRA needs to be expounded upon, and that is a task that (in different ways) both the Nexus document and the JDA attempt to tackle.
Unsurprisingly, I prefer the Nexus' approach of not directly trying to overthrow IHRA but rather fine-tune, calibrate, and direct it. I have no desire to undermine the symbolic importance of IHRA, but I very much have an interest in alleviating the very real gaps and shortfalls present under any honest reckoning with IHRA's text. Even still, if I'm being honest I suspect that the JDA will prove more influential than Nexus simply as a function of polarization. The people who blame IHRA for creating a toxic atmosphere around antisemitism want something that directly challenges it. The people who are basically content with the way antisemitism discourse has proceeded around IHRA will stick with it, without seeing the need for modification. Even if substantively the Nexus does the best job of filling the pitfalls and potholes in IHRA while representing a vision of fighting antisemitism that aligns with the median American Jew, the seemingly inexorable pull of polarization will drive people into the arms of either IHRA or anti-IHRA (which is to say, JDA).
III. Substantive Similarities and Differences Across the Frameworks
You might have noticed that the above analysis actually doesn't concentrate that much on the actual substantive differences between the three antisemitism frameworks. One reason for that is that, as my table illustrates, there are fewer differences between them than one might guess from the heated nature of the JDA and IHRA's reception. Certainly, it is fair to focus on the areas where the definitions depart -- that's what should determine whether one prefers one over another -- but that focus can overshadow the significant agreement in a large set of cases regarding what is antisemitic amongst all three frameworks. All agree that criticism of Israel can be antisemitic insofar as Israel is a Jewish institution (and thus none indulge in the tritely true but banal point that "Judaism and Israel are not the same thing"), all agree that criticism of Israel is not always antisemitic, all agree that "tropes" (variously worded) are an important feature of antisemitism, and all agree that notions of Jewish collective responsibility for alleged Israeli misdeeds are antisemitic.
What are the key differences? I've mentioned two already: IHRA and Nexus both consider denial of Jewish self-determination rights to be antisemitic, while the JDA seemingly does not; and IHRA and Nexus don't speak specifically on BDS, while the JDA expressly says it is not antisemitic. These are both significant. BDS is a well-known third rail in Jewish politics, and Nexus' "strategic ambiguity" (to put it uncharitably) on the question is an attempt to traverse a cliff the JDA eagerly dives off. Likewise, as noted above the "Israel has no right to exist" position is one on which there is almost unrivaled Jewish consensus regarding its antisemitic character, so the JDA's dissident position here is risky indeed.
Beyond those two issues (and putting aside any nitpicking one can do about phrasing or word choices), the other big departure I see in the JDA is that it explicitly says that "double standards" are not antisemitic, whereas IHRA says they are. The Nexus tries to take a middle position here, agreeing that double standards are antisemitic but refusing the simplistic argument that any time Israel is concentrated on or even "singled out" in a discrete case that is evidence of a double-standard (as I've argued, AIPAC "singles out" Israel -- is that antisemitic? Of course not). The JDA's rejection of including "double standards" likely stems from the view that this language has been particularly abused by right-wing zealots who argue that essentially any Israel-critical activity that does not simultaneously tackle the entire world is per se antisemitic. That notwithstanding, the JDA's dismissal of double standards as even a potential form of antisemitism seems clearly incorrect. Disparate treatment -- treating likes unalike -- is perhaps the closest thing there is to the paradigm case of discrimination and it'd be simply weird for antisemitism to stand alone in not including this very intuitive case. If one can subject Jews or Jewish institutions to different standards than other comparable actors in global affairs without it being labeled "antisemitic", you've created a loophole you can drive a truck through.
It is also important flag a group of important components of antisemitism that are found only in the Nexus definition and are not present or discussed in either IHRA or the JDA. The first is that the Nexus definition is the only one which considers certain social conditions (on top of behaviors or attitudes) to be cases of antisemitism: specifically, those conditions "that discriminate against Jews and significantly impede their ability to participate as equals in political, religious, cultural, economic, or social life." I lobbied very hard to include this language, and in some ways I think it is the single most important point in Nexus' favor compared to other frameworks. Ironically enough (given that the Nexus document is nominally limited to the Israel case), the inclusion of this language is why the Nexus document is probably the only framework of the three which could explain why a proposed ban on Kosher slaughter would be antisemitic -- it does not fall within any of either IHRA or JDA's examples, but it would represent a social condition which "significantly impede[s] [Jews'] ability to participate as equals" in European society. Understanding antisemitism as not just a set of attitudes or behaviors but as a state of social affairs better aligns antisemitism with emerging understandings of racism and other forms of oppression, all of which have dedicated considerable attention to understanding inequality at least partially in those terms.
The second inclusion in Nexus not seen in the other frameworks is an acknowledgment of the epistemic antisemitism that occurs when Jewish claims regarding antisemitism are reflexively or cavalierly dismissed. The so-called Livingstone Formulation, where claims of antisemitism can be immediately brushed off by claiming they're actually attempts to "silence criticism of Israel," is one of the primary mechanisms through which Jews are impeded in their ability to be treated as valid and viable claim-makers in public discourse. Here, too, recognition of this practice as a form of antisemitism aligns antisemitism with other forms of oppression where it has been well-acknowledged that these sorts of reflexive dismissals are themselves manifestations of racism, sexism, or what have you (as in the infamous and ubiquitous "race card" retort). The opening entry of the Nexus definition is decisive on this point: "All claims of antisemitism made by Jews, like all claims of discrimination and oppression in general, should be given serious attention" -- which is not to say automatic acceptance, but not immediate eye-rolling dismissal either. Neither IHRA nor the JDA address this issue -- IHRA probably wasn't thinking about it at all, and the JDA it's fair to assume includes a good number of stakeholders who are at least sympathetic to the notion that antisemitism claims are regularly abused and so need tighter policing.
The final major feature of Nexus not found in its compatriots is an acknowledgment of a particular type of antisemitism that targets Jews for having the "wrong" view on Israel, at which point their status as Jews is called into question. Rudy Giuliani claiming that he's "more of a Jew" than George Soros is a high-profile case here. But the importance of including this as a form of antisemitism stemmed from the way in which this sort of marginalizing rhetoric is especially likely to be deployed against Jews of Color, who regularly are assailed as being "fake" or "lesser" Jews (even by non-Jews!) if they deviate from an imagined proper or correct Jewish standpoint on Israel. The Nexus document accordingly recognizes that "denigrating or denying the Jewish identity of certain Jews because they are perceived as holding the 'wrong' position (whether too critical or too favorable) on Israel" is a form of antisemitism, and I can say that language was included in specific recognition of dynamics one increasingly sees on social media where JOCs have been subject to brutal and persistent harassment along this exact dimension. It is a recurrent failing of Jewish efforts on antisemitism that we often are not thinking intersectionally -- and so the discrete experiences or problems faced by, e.g., Jewish women, or Mizrahi Jews, or Jews of Color, as Jews are overlooked or not incorporated. I'm sure the Nexus document can still improve on this front, but I am proud that it made at least a step in the right direction.
Y'all. I just finished Charon Docks at Daylight and I am having FEELINGS about it.
Since I'm having way more thoughts than will fit in my GoodReads review, and no one I know IRL has read it, I'm going to scream into the void that is Tumblr in the hopes that the void will scream back.
In no particular order (and behind a cut because spoilers, obvi):
ECHO AND GENEVIEVE. omg. Enemies to lovers is already my favorite trope, and having the enemies and lovers portions overlap? *chef's kiss* Their relationship was HOT. And addicting. Reading as they grew together was just.... fucking amazing. (There's the emotional tension! And the sexual tension! Both of which are so much richer and more powerful because they've already had sex but Not That Kind of Sex!
But. BUT.
Echo's "death" was MADDENING! And not just because I desperately wanted her and Genevieve to end up together living happily every after (although OF COURSE DID). The story structure clearly foreshadows major character death (you don't get a resolution of the yearning BEFORE the Big Dramatic Showdown unless someone is going to DIE in the BDS) so I went in expecting it but also dreading it. Frankly it just felt out of sync with the rhythm of the rest of the book. We've watched these characters fight off Ferals for 50-something chapters and now one of them fails? After this whole convoluted series of poor decisions? (Still do not totally get the in-story logic for sending away Mal, Imogen, and Micah.) But also, again with the structure of the story - Reed is telling a story about hope. About being able to find light after darkness. About finding the good in terrible situations, fighting your way out, finding redemption even after having made mistakes. And killing off one of your main characters flies in the face of that theme.
Of course obviously he didn't kill off Echo. But "surprise! they weren't dead!" is frankly a cheap trope, and here it feels incredible shoehorned in. Reed did a great job dropping clues in previous chapters, it's true, but each one felt out of place - instead of the reveal making sense because of the clues, the clues made sense because of the reveal, as I went "ah, that's why Reed did [thing that was completely out of place / illogical ten chapters ago - to set up this ending." (Most glaringly: the heroin, which came ABSOLUTELY out of left field and didn't make any sense when many much simpler plot devices could've accomplished the same things; and Jed's raiders not killing Wolf - why would you capture a dog and drag it around without feeding it for no reason!? because Wolf is a big furry plot device, that's why.)
Also what's he accomplishing, narratively, with making Genevieve go through another 8 months of misery and pain before she gets her happy ending? It seems JUST designed to fuck with his readers, which, you know, effectively done, but a well-written story has its own reasons. I shouldn't read something and go "This happened because the author wanted it to happen."
THEY NAMED THE BABY HAYDEN. Yeah that's cheap and sentimental but it 100% got me.
I never particularly cared about Dugan. It took me awhile to get into his chapters - once Kara and especially Mal came into the picture I was a lot more interested, but compared to the emotional intensity of Genevieve and Echo's dynamic their storyline felt like a letdown. And while I'm sure part of that is just me being Too Gay to care about the whole father / daughter dynamic, part of that is that it's just hard to care about completely separate narratives that cut each other off and don't intersect until the very end - and even then just barely. If this storyline had, say, been given space to breath as a separate novel, I would've felt MUCH more invested.
Also tbh I would've been more invested if Namiko (? if I'm even remembering the name right) wasn't fridged. That death just seemed incredibly pointless, narratively, and killed off (ha ha) the momentum that had been building with her storyline as she came out of her shell and we learned more about her as a character.
I would read an entire novel about Mal. I immediately pictured her as Huntress from Birds of Prey. She's so fucking cool.
I would also read an entire novel - or at least several more chapters - about Imogen. Can it be the same book as Mal? (Can I ship two characters who barely interact? (Obviously yes.)
Ultimately I can't decide if I think this was a good book or not. Reed is clearly an incredible writer - I wouldn't be this invested in these characters or their stories if he wasn't. And it's incredible that he wrote and published something this good free and chapter-by-chapter online. But there's some big holes and flaws, and I would LOVE to see what this book would've looked like with a more thorough / sophisticated editing process. Have any of you read it? What did YOU think?
