It's a Nazi era movie about Otto von Bismarck. Let's rip it to shreds.

TLDR: It's surprisingly accurate in many ways, though definitely propagandist in the way that they discuss the English.

Y’know. Speaking as someone who’s said things in defense of some of his and his administration’s choices, it’s not like the culpability of Biden in regards to the Israel/Gaza situation is zero, but it is telling just how many bad actors would benefit from American voters considering the level of that culpablity to be high.

To briefly summarize the core of the arguments I’ve made, for context:

As far as I understand Biden and his administration are trying to stay on Israel’s good side under the belief that doing so gives them more ability to affect the situation than just openly condemning Israel. Also people vastly overestimate the degree to which the US, and especially the president specifically, can actually effect things.

There’s almost certainly more to the logic than just that, but viewing things though this lens does cause a lot of the actions that have been taken to make wayyyyyy more sense. It makes sense why they haven’t laid this out, too. The entire gist of the strategy is that if we’re Israel’s “only friend” during a time when they are a) whipped into a frenzy by an attack on their national security and b) hated by everyone because of their extreme response to point a, then the voice of the only ally standing beside them will carry a lot more weight than just being the largest voice in the big group of people criticizing them that they’ve already chosen to not listen to. That doesn’t work if we openly say “we’re only being nice to you because we actually agree with everyone mad at you and we want you to listen to us”. Overall, I respect the logic of this strategy, it makes sense why they chose it, and I can see the arguments for why openly condemning Israel would probably just make things worse, make them more desperate with no trusted voice telling them to exercise any restraint.

It’s also a strategy with objectively shit optics, even if it does work, and it’s a strategy borne of the outdated belief that supporting Israel is the politically necessary public stance to take, without properly adjusting for changing attitudes. And, while I do respect and understand the logic behind it, that doesn’t mean I’m totally convinced that it was the best call, or that a harsher stance wouldn’t be more effective in terms of both optics and results.

So by no means do I think that the tactics chosen, or their implementation, is above criticism. They are, emphatically, not.

However, at the same time, much has been said about how the Israeli propaganda engine is out in full force, and Netanyahu and his cronies would absolutely fucking LOVE for the the American government to be run by batshit insane evangelicals who would give them unconditional support to quote unquote “make clean the holy land”. They’re well aware of how their actions are perceived. There’s a reason they keep trying to push the whole “criticism of Israel is antisemitism” angle, even though all it does is piss people off and raise the rate of actual antisemitism. It’s because global antisemitism justifies Israel’s existence and creates an external threat that Netanyahu’s facist administration can use to bolster its support. They know what they’re doing is turning the world against them - that’s the entire point. Which means they’re also well aware that they can try and drag Biden and the democrats as a whole down with them, giving them the republican administration they want.

This is all to say, I don’t think we should give our politicians a free pass, or stop criticizing US support of an imperialistic and currently genocidal country, and I am genuinely worried that Biden’s choice to prioritize effectiveness over optics is going to backfire, badly. We need to hold our leaders accountable for their actions, and while I do think Biden gets a lot of undeserved shit in general, he is far from perfect and has made a number of mistakes. But at the same time, I think we should all take arguments trying to paint him as fully culpable for Israel’s actions, especially ones to the effect of “therefore you shouldn’t vote”, with a grain of salt, and to take a moment to think about exactly who benefits from those arguments being made.

Hi!

I have maybe a strange question for you: what do you think of Capote? And of his friendship with Marylin?

I know that he knew her personally and wrote about her, describing her as "a beautiful child" but not anything more.

i don't have too many thoughts on capote specifically except for that his supporting turn in murder by death is very silly and funny and i read one of his books in high school and remember liking it.

he did know marilyn personally, they were friends, and i think she was one of the original inspirations for holly golightly in breakfast at tiffany's (which..... so were like ten other women tbf) and also someone whose name was floated to play her in the film, which..... i mean, i would be curious to see her in that part, but the character would have been very different (and we all know the character was turned wayyyyyy down in the translation from novella to the screen, especially once audrey signed on, blah blah blah etc. breakfast at tiffanys is one of my most hated movies for context). i take the beautiful child quote with a grain of salt considering truman had the tendency to be a bit mean when talking about his friends and he burned a lot of bridges that way, but the one thing i think is really interesting here is the amount of writers and intellectuals that marilyn seemed to befriend and keep in her inner circle.... i mean truman, we all know about arthur miller (gag), carson mccullers, tennessee williams.... it just goes to show how she saw herself and wanted to be seen vs. the way society portrays/sees her.

I can see that you're not a native English speaker but your grasp on the language is applaudable how long have you been learning?

Your writing (both tumblr posts and fanfiction) have a classical elegance to it and it's hard for even native speakers to communicate their thoughts as beautifully as you do 💙 Have you taken some special training for it?

Oh my god angel anon this is so sweet, and lmao you're right I'm not a native speaker like at all, tbvvh I struggle a lot w english, always have like I'd score the lowest in it out of all my subjects in high school, ugh my total percentage always took a hit bc of it -_- wont ever stop being salty about it ngl, so no I've had no real training whatsoever beyond like the general compulsory learning in school, and also anybody who chats w me for like more than a minute will immediately know that idgaf about spellings or sentence structure or general coherency in my day to day english, Lmao which reminds me the other day I literally told someone I ~idealize~ I look up to in every way possible when it comes to writing *cough* Jenn @cbk1000 *cough* that “……blah something blah…..I teached...blah blah” while talking and I didnt notice it for like a hot second and Jenn is too sweet (sort of) to point it out but oh my god I was mortified by it when I realized what I had said, but honestly what throws me is that I didn't really notice it was wrong for a long time and like I thought it was a-ok until it hit me that it’s taught.

So in all honesty my english is as good as any non-native speaker who had to learn the language growing up strictly for school purposes.

That being said in my ff writing I just try really really pathetically hard when I write, like the pretension leaps out and tries to reproduce whatever I myself have consumed so far in terms of writing and recycle it as my own crap, I just have this ability (it's not a special thing everyone does it lmao) to subsume what I read and I mostly just take sentences, metaphors and other writerly things sometimes even just the mood/setting of the writing that strike me and rewrite it w an added touch of pretension and it's actually really tangible how much I allow what I read to drastically affect how I write and since I read a weird eclectic mix of really….just a lot of different things that shouldn't really go together lol, my writing style/ narrator voice/ mood setting for my ff also varies a lot, like one day I write Klaus w a satire and critical wit that’s not exactly Voltaire but close, where he’s pretty much just disgusted by everything and decides to mock it all with a straight face and the next day I write him as a lil pining shit with saccharine levels of romanticism in my writing to appeal to his artist-soul mostly bc I sat my ass down and read a poem or two by Keats prior to writing, other days he’s cute and murderous, wears human teeth as jewelry and is just a tiny bit poignant bc I had a date with Poe….so yeah basically what I’m trying to say is that the only "training" I've ever had is what I've already read all these years and what I write is just all the text I've kept w myself and can recollect and re-arrange into my own writing, which is why I would never consider my work to be something that’s completely and originally mine bc I have this personal saying that goes,

“Everything I see is an image of an image.”

Which to me means a lot of things but in this particular context means that nothing I create belongs to me and only me, it belongs to every writer I’ve read before writing it and will be reminisced by every author who I’ll read after it, that everything I create is just what creators before me have done but have allowed me to take their creations and make it mine before I too pass it on with love and history to the next person.

I also have another quote I feel in every inch of my heart and that’s

So really this is just my personal...philosophy?? Belief, that I owe my creativity to the world and everything it creates *through* me because I don't own the beauty, I’m only a lens through which it passes through, that my creativity refracts the world's beauty into my life and my creations, and I am glad, blessed to have been the lens through which such beauty passes through.

And that I am more than happy to just be another image who is someone else’s reflection or the very object someone else will reflect, I love how much that connects every human being and every object of beauty, of creation in existence inescapably.

Now I’ve rambled on a lot like a LOT, definitely wayyyyyy more than that simple ask warranted lmao so I’ll shut up and just say you’re the sweetest lovely anon this message made me feel so very flattered and I genuinely think I blushed (and trust me brown girls cannot blush mostly bc the melanin wont let the pink filter through lmao) and I am honoured to know that you thought I took some professional coaching for this because I literally am the most amateur absolutely clueless bullshit your way through everything writer you will find out there and I am ngl proud of that.

Christmas is coming. Who are you buying gifts for? Christmas already did come and the most stressful part that is gift shopping is finally over, thankfully. I got gifts for all the members of Gab’s family, save for her grandma who doesn’t like me and who I don’t like back because I don’t go down without a fight lolol. I also got gifts for my mom and sister. When somebody intimidates you, how do you usually act around them? I wouldn’t want to show it and so I’d always try to act like my usual self. Is your favorite singer in a band or does he or she ride solo? She used to be, and gained popularity for being, in a girl group but she’s already gone solo for a very long time. Did your parents ever hang your old artwork up on the walls? They do this with my sister’s works, because she’s a bigger artist than I am. They’d probably do the same with me if only I was the artistic type too. How often do you wear chapstick? Never. I don’t own one, and I haven’t for like probably a decade now.

Do you walk around your house with your shoes on or do you take them off? Take them off, because I’m Asian. What is the weirdest obsession you've ever had? My obsession with the 80s sitcom Perfect Strangers back in 2011 was not weird, but definitely out of place for the time. I was posting stills of the cast and sharing funny quotes from the show that absolutely nobody could relate to, so I kinda got why I didn’t have much friends at the time or why no one really knew how to approach me. How long can you be in a car before wanting to get out? I can handle road trips pretty well, honestly; I’ve been in 15-hour drives where I can’t say I had a hard time. I’m guessing it’s because my dad would have us go on verrrrrry long road trips, and at some point I just got used to our 8, 10, or 12-hour long drives. Would you rather be in lust or love? Why? Love. Lust is a bit hard to come by on my end considering I’m demi. How many of the seven deadly sins have you fulfilled today? Envy, gluttony, greed, and pride. The Vamps has always fucking sucked for me in all aspects. What subject is/was hardest for you in school? Are you better with creative writing or writing essays? Essays, definitely. I doubt I can do creative writing to save my life. What is the first facial feature you notice on a person? I don’t really look at faces; my eyes usually go to what other people are wearing. When was the last time you were rick rolled? Last night, I can’t fucking BELIEVE IT LMAO. I was on Reddit and saw a popular post from r/teenagers, I had no clue what it was referring to but because my fingers just go around clicking stuff I went ahead and clicked on the post – it gave me the lyrics to the song. Not the music video, but the lyrics. What is the weirdest animal you've ever seen as a pet? I don’t think I’ve encountered any weird pets. Which is good, because most of the time weird = illegal. If Ronald McDonald stole your bed, where would you want to have sex? This is...a weird question... If you had to change one, would you rather change your hair or your eyes? My hair, because it’s wayyyyyy too frizzy. When was the last time you had a 'she-mergency'? Two Mondays ago. I was in a photo studio for a shoot and I realized then and there that my period had started during the trip and that by the time I got there, the crotch area of my jumpsuit was already quite soaked. Which sounds creepier: sleeping in the attic or the basement? I’d find it scarier sleeping in the basement, just because those are less common here and because I know JM has a room in his house’s attic and he’s doing just fine. That’s just sick. Did you know that Albert Einstein was a womanizer? No. Who did you last dream about? I forget my dreams easily, so I’m afraid I can’t answer this. Do you have trouble remembering important things? Not really. Which animal can you imitate the best? Dogs I guess, because I have one of my own. How many people do you think you've met in your life? Take One: Scene One [College Au! Taking an editing course with Christian]

As class came to an end your professor handed back your peer reviewed midterms. You honestly always thought peer reviewed was a fancy way of saying Your professor was too lazy to actually grade it themselves, but there were no complaints on your end. There was no way a classmate would fail you, they probably had the same anxiety.

Everyone was always lenient at peer reviews. Right?

“Alright Kids, remember to go over the discussion board, read the next chapter and start drafting ideas for the final” Professor Seo leaned on her desk, taking off her glasses. “Any questions?”

“Yeah, can I do a makeup midterm?” One of the kids in the back piped up.

She chuckled. “No make ups, but if anyone enters the film festival, that presentation will be used to replace their lowest grade, including a midterm. Next question?”

“Professor Seo, what is this?” you gasped turning over your paper.

“Is there a problem?” she raised a brow.

“A problem? Yeah, you can say that” you pointed at the C on your review paper. You knew for a fact your film was better than a C, especially compared to some of your classmates. You’d always gone that extra mile. There was no reason in hell this should have been a C.

“I was going to go over that after class with you, I did think the review of your short film was a little on the harsher end but, I couldn’t argue with his reasoning's. He had very valid points”

You scoffed “Lack of personality that did nothing to compliment the overal ambiance of the film?” you quoted the notes on the paper.

“The wording wasn’t ideal but after another review, I had to agree with him. Your film was elegant and safe but-”

“Anyone could’ve directed it” Christian turned around to face you from the row in front of you. “A few generic cut scenes to some rivers, and trees blowing in the wind, accompanied by a monologue that would be best suited for some B rated young adult novel that doesn’t even make it to theaters”

“Excuse you?!” you rolled your eyes and scoffed. “Says the guy that literally can’t produce something without over saturated lights, and some basic trap filter that looks like a child doodled all over your film.”

“At least I have a style”

“And what’s that? Dark silhouettes, fog machines and excessive filters?”

“And your style is what? Slowmo street shots, coffee shops, and disconnected monologues? I felt like I was watchin the rejected footage of the next Amazon teen series.”

“I’m sorry and what’s the purpose of you using a steadicam if you’re literally going to throw these shaky ass, Blair Witch Project filters on all of your footage? It looks like your cameraman had a seizure”

“I’m sorry just how many times did you need to have the same tree shots looped in the video?”

“About as many times as you needed to have a black and white video and a random eye color edit, that looked like a cheesey effect from an early 2000’s music video.”

“Who do you even think you are?!”

“Your new editing partner” Professor Seo interjected with a smile. “You two are going to work together and edit your midterms into a collaborative project for the film festival.”

“Excuse me?!” you couldn’t help but give your professor a dumbfounded look.

“I’d rather we not” Christian groaned, raking his hand through his hair.

She raised her hands in the air “Hey you guys signed the syllabus, even though I did leave a note in there that said subject to change in regards to film festival participation”

“Fine” you huffed “Looks like I’ll need the film festival grade to replace this C” you said just loud enough to make sure Christian heard you.

“If you don’t like the C, don’t do C-grade material.”

“I wanna push him in front of a truck.” you crossed your arms over your chest, mumbling to yourself.

Your friend Dahye laughed to herself rubbing your back. “Down girl… Seriously, is this some sort of foreplay with you two?”

“I’m seriously gonna run him over.” you grumbled. “A couple times”

After class you found yourself in one of the empty work rooms, sitting on the desk, facing Christian. “I’d rather be home sleeping, but thanks to someone I’ve got to make a video for a festival I’m not prepared for.”

“Oh relax Princess. It’s not like we’re aiming for first place.” he took a puff of his vape.

“You’re not aiming for first place. I’m trying to get an A” you sighed looking at your notebook, trying to find at least one salvageable idea. You coughed shooing away the smoke. “And can you not do that indoors? Why do you always have to be such a fuck boy?”

“You love it” he chuckled placing both his arms on either side of your thighs, brushing up against your dress.

“I’m sorry, do I know you?” you removed his hand from your thigh.

“You still mad at me Babe?” he pouted, kissing the side of your mouth.

“Don’t kiss me Barom. You gave me a C you asshole.” you playfully shoved his chest away.

“Woah Barom?” he scoffed “What are you my mother?” he laughed. You only ever used his birth name when you were pissed. He placed his hand over his chest, feigning hurt. “Oh come on, I’m the asshole? You compared my film to an early 2000 music video without a steadicam” he laughed. “Also over edited and saturated? I felt like you were just sitting on that one, waiting to use it”

“You compared mine to a rejected young adult movie!”

“Damn right I did. You’re really gonna argue that that was one of your better videos? I’ve seen you do better producing in your sleep.”

“Ouch Christian. I worked really hard on that film.”

“But it’s not to your usual standard. If I let you get away with half-assing something, I’ll never see the beautiful things you make when you actually try.”

You sighed, refusing to admit that he was right. Honestly, your thoughts on your work were lukewarm. You didn’t think it was C worthy, you just knew it wasn’t an A. You had a concept and kind of lost it halfway through. You couldn’t help but toss together an ending with some exposition.“I just...have writer's blocks...”

“Bullshit. You don’t have writer's block.” he set down his vape and tilted your chin to look down at him “You’re just afraid to put out something that other people don’t like. But here’s the thing Babe, it’s not about other people. All that matters is you like it.”

“That’s stupid.”

“That’s art.” he smirked pecking your lips. “Trust me, and just got with your gut. I’m giving you creative control on this one.” he smiled “I concede and you’re the director.”

“You hate giving up the director’s seat.” you sighed playing with the hair on his nape.

“But I love you more…” his voice was gentle as he tucked your hair behind your ear. “I’m here for you... I’ve seen your better work and you have an incredible instinct.” Seeing you relax and lean into his touch he smiled. “Besides you need this project wayyyyyy more than me” he chuckled “I got an A on my midterm.”

“I fucking hate you” you hit his chest, pouting. “I got a C because of you”

“It really is because I know you could do better” You’d met Christian over the summer during a visual editing course. There were only a handful of people willing to spend their summer taking a four-hour course two times a week and Christian was the one who caught your attention. His style drew you in, despite his striking difference in overall appreciated aesthetic.

One study date led to another. Soon enough both of you realized that studying was the furthest thing from your mind and fell into a rhythm of sorts. Dating naturally followed. Despite being together you were both very serious about your projects, opting to separate business and pleasure.

You’d given him feedback before on his work but never any sort of constructive criticism so being forced to work together under these conditions were pretty stressful. “It’s gonna be fine” Christian chuckled, smoothing down the furrow between your brows. “You need to relax to get the creative juices pumpin.”

“I’m not gonna drink before working.” you released a deep sigh.

“Luckily for you, I had another idea….” he smirked, laying you back on the desk, pulling you into a kiss. His lips molding over yours as he grinned against your mouth. “Mmmm...”

“Christian...What if someone comes in?” Your hand slid down his strong shoulders to his chest, as you took a moment to catch your breath. Your lips still, grazing his as you looked at him with hooded eyes.

“Then let’s give ‘em a show” he smirked, burying his face in your neck as his hands wandered lower, cupping your bottom.
