i feel like a big problem in the danganronpa fandom and anime fandom in general is japanese and east asian fetishism? i'm constantly coming across people who like, are super obsessed with dr & other similar media and give themselves japanese names and try to be 'experts' on japan and its culture. i'm a japanese-american and this is so frustratingly common where i go to school and i did like a cultural camp this summer and it was just packed with weeaboos who were totally convinced they could be japanese if they tried hard enough. there's a lot of like, racist -- maybe unintentionally but still racist -- danganronpa fans (especially teenage cosplayers on tiktok??) and obv there's elements of racism in the games themselves (rn i can't think of many examples off the top of my head except for angie?) it might also just be an american thing, do you see this very often as a british anime fan? (sorry for ranting in your inbox lol i thought as a fellow dr fan who's kind of like, willing to confront the bad sides of the franchise + fandom you would be able to get what i'm saying :P)

you're all good!! it's an interesting and frustrating topic to be sure. i'll answer the easiest thing u brought up first— as a british anime fan, i would say the subculture is a lot smaller here than it seems in america? conventions and stuff don't seem to be as popular or as often as they are elsewhere. like i've never heard of an anime convention anywhere near me, for example, and i have a few bigger cities near me. STILL obviously anime and japanese media consumption breeds weirdos.

when i moved into my flat for my first year of uni one of my flatmates was one of those people who are. very loud about liking anime? idk i kind of see anime as like, just another form of media, not a personality trait or even the only thing i consume. like, i watch a lot of shows that aren't anime and play a lot of games that aren't japanese, so i personally dont see the point in identifying urself as an anime-watcher or a 'weeb' which. blegh. but yeah he was ur typical 'mommy-misato-dragon-maid-zero-two' fanboy who randomly broke into broken japanese, referenced anime all the time even when he knew the person he was talking to hadn't watched or even heard of what he was referencing, and overall just seemed to have a very distorted idea of what japan... is like? and obviously im english and have never been to japan so, i dont claim to know what japan is like either. but this guy seemed to think it was some apolitical utopia full of 'traditional' women who all adhere to the 'waifu' archetype (which. gross. fucking gross). i mean needless to say i dont speak to this guy anymore. but my point being that yeah, there is definitely still elements of asian fetishisation present in groups here in britain!! it's why i tend to avoid people who make watching anime their whole personality, i guess, because it always seems to lead to other red flags.

i think some of it you can chalk up to healthy fascination. like, japan and most other asian countries are super different culturally to england, or britain as a whole. for me, i think it's fun to learn about cultural differences, and japan has a very interesting history (in good ways and bad) and it's generally a fascinating country. but what a lot of people do is let the way it's portrayed in anime become a representative for how they think the country actually is, which, like. eh. i guess it's kinda like how a lot of non-brits think all our schools are like hogwarts, when if you want actual representation you should look to educating yorkshire or the inbetweeners. but obviously there's a line to be drawn, and i think it's stupid to assume you know what a country and its people are like because you've consumed media from that country.

as for racism in the game. yeah. the mishandling of angie's god (which, i think is a localisation thing?? apparently in the original japanese, she just called her god, 'god.' and 'atua' was done in the localisation as they thought she was polynesian. but this is very weird and i dont see why they would change it when 'god' is used in many, many cultures and 'atua' is a lot more specific). there's also the daisaku bendai, the ultimate farmer, who's design is..... awful. and then there's the anti-semitic imagery, particularly on kokichi's splash-art, where he wears a nazi-esque hat and holds grape fanta (for those unaware, fanta was a drink create by nazi germany) as well as his title being ultimate supreme leader. it's a bit. like. one of those things on it's own would maybe be okay but all three together is a lot of nazi imagery and it's very odd.

in short, there's a fuckton of racism surrounding danganronpa, both in the game and in the fandom. it's awful and disgusting, and disheartening that this kind of stuff should still exist in 2022, and im very sincerely sorry you have come across it so often. i think it's a consumers duty to educate themselves about the media they consume and think critically about it. i dont even really say i 'like' danganronpa because most of the time im sort of fed up with it and all the problematic aspects. it's more just like, i see the potential for something great and it frustrates me a lot that it wasn't developed, as well as being attached to a lot of the characters. but yeah. thank you for this ask, it was actually a good thought exercise and i hope it helped get some frustration off your chest too!

cultural differences

i have a lot of international friends. and with me being american and them being from Literally Anywhere Else, we have discovered a Lot of cultural differences. pair that with curtwen/spies brainrot and you get whatever This is:

- starting off strong with an obvious one: temperature. the age old fahrenheit v. celsius debate. like i imagine the guys just walking around whatever city they’re in for the week and (we’ll say it’s summer idc) curt’s like ‘it’s so hot out here, it’s gotta be like 90 degrees or something’ and owen just looks at him in Horror for a second (maybe he even says something along the lines of ‘mega ik it’s warm but that’s just overdramatic’) before he remembers curt’s american and that’s just Regular hot in fahrenheit and not like INSANELY hot like it is in celsius. and then he’s just ‘no its more like 32 degrees i think’ just to fuck with him bc the same though process will go through curt’s head and owen just wants to see his face before he remembers owen’s british and not just saying the opposite of what he said. and ofc they know both systems well enough; they’ve traveled around enough for that. and usually it’s not that weird; curt’s used to owen using celsius and owen’s used to curt using fahrenheit and they usually get what the other is saying, but Sometimes they just either forget or don’t want to convert what they’re saying for the other, so they just Don’t and let the other suffer trying to figure it out for a minute.

-same with measurement. american measurement names are so weird to begin with, it’s like curt’s asking to get made fun of when he talks about how many feet something is or Whatever. (also just imagine owen mocking curt’s accent the way curt mocks owen’s at the start of the show,, yeah it’s great) Anyway- it’s pretty much the same thing as the temperature situation, but because of the american measurements curt just gets made fun of a lot more. like owen knows what he means when he says it but he’s still gonna respond like ‘what the ✨bloody hell✨ is an inch????’ (extra british to just make it that much worse for curt lol)

-chain stores. listen idk what all types of chains they had in the 50s (britain especially lol) but they for sure weren’t nearly as globalized as they are now (pretty much all i remember is that walmart and mcdonalds existed in the US at that point tbh) but ik based on conversations i’ve had with my international friends it’d go something like this (the same for if you flipped them too ofc): owen: hey have you been to *insert British chain (restaurant, store, Whatever)* curt: sorry to What?? i’ve literally never even heard of that. what is it? owen: ONLY THE BEST THING EVER???? i can’t believe you don’t have those in america, no wonder you’re so miserable... and then the second they have an opportunity to do so, owen drags curt to britain to experience Whatever The Place was lol. curt’s done the same with some american places, too. They both really love those trips :)

-names of every day objects. this one probably comes up between them most often (also the most obvious). of course there’s the difference between apartment and flat, trunk and boot, elevator and lift, etc. these types of differences generally don’t bother them (same with the extra u’s in words like colo(u)r), it just earns the other some classic accent mocking. it’s the pronunciation of some words has nearly ended their relationship a few times. examples include but are not limited to: 1) cicada; i imagine they’re out on like. a stakeout or something and it’s getting dark and curt’s like ‘woah the sic-kay-duhs are so loud right now’ and owen’s just ‘... the What?? are you talking about sic-ah-duhs?? like the bugs?’ ‘yeah... how did you say it???’ ‘sic-ah-duh.’ ‘wrong.’ and it’s just them realizing that this is yet another american/british relationship clash and argue about who’s right about the pronunciation until they almost miss their mission target moving. 2) scone; i’m not gonna write this one out like i did the last one but here’s the rundown: owen: scahn curt: skown. owen goes out to pick them up some breakfast from a coffeeshop or Wherever before a mission and gets them a couple of scones. He brings them back and calls them ‘scahns’ and curt is Appalled at that. they proceed to argue about the pronunciation of their breakfast until cynthia or barb calls to ask them why tf they haven’t even left the hotel yet. eventually they make it to their mission but the argument never stops. not until the end of the day.

(the scone one is literally based on a recurring conversation i have with a canadian friend of mine)

Bonus: y’all know how curt’s from Texas? well i’m from the south as well (different region of the south, yes, but shhhh this is funny ok) and WELL. that opens up a whole new section of cultural differences, but the first one that came to mind was sweet tea. i hate unadulterated sweet tea so much but OHHHHHH does it make for a great headcanon. so i hc that owen is a tea over coffee type of person,, not just bc he’s british (though that certainly doesn’t help) but just because i feel that suits him more. And of course curt very much so makes fun of owen for drinking tea (a la when he mocks his accent at the top of the show) too. but one day curt’s like hey owen i made you some tea. totally harmless right? WRONG! he made sweet tea™️ and it might as well be poisoned bc that shit is sweeter than sugar itself (bc that’s practically all that’s in it). but owen doesn’t pay it any mind and accepts it as his boyfriend just doing something nice for him (though he does give curt a Look when he takes it). but curt knows exactly what he’s doing and waits for owen to taste it. the second he does he just. imediately gags and curls in on himself (yes it can be that bad when you’re not expecting it lol). curt can’t stop laughing. a few moments later when they both recover (kind of) owen’s just. shocked. absolutely speechless. he just sits there staring at curt with murder in his eyes until, “...what the hell did you just give me?” “sweet tea” “no shit, but this isn’t tea by a long shot. how much sugar is in it?” “no clue” “WHAT DO YOU MEAN ‘NO CLUE’?!?! YOU MADE IT!” “just bc i made it doesn’t mean i measured.” “WHAT??!?!” “that’s just how you do it :)” “NO??????”

owen doesn’t forgive him for a week. he also doesn’t trust curt to make him tea (or really any drink) at all after that unless he can actually Watch him make it :)

my Kotlc main crew as human ethnicity headcanons (so it helps me visualise what they’re wearing) (and it’d be a lot cooler if the elves had a richer culture than just Western Europe and Britain whatever):

In this post: Sophie, Fitz, Biana, Keefe

Sophie: she’s very much American, girl was born and raised on the west coast and grew up with surfer culture. But, I do think that the Ruewens would have Great British roots (for Edaline) and possibly South African (for Grady, although idk if it’s Dutch, English or whatever).

Despite the American heritage, Soph incorporates as much human culture as she can in her outfits (in the later books) and ends up looking like a mix of Taylor Momson and Avril Lavigne(age appropriate outfits, please), a bit of 2000s surfer influence (salty hair, t-shirt style rash shirts, stickers all over her board, etc.) but usually does so when at home. It does get kind of hard when there’s so many ruffles and lace and gems on her clothes but she likes to ‘up-cycle’ them aka hack at them with scissors.

At formal occasions, she wears the most moveable Elvin clothes (which would be closer linked to the regency era since the dresses seem the most ‘juvenile’, not really looking for that word, but they aren’t too flashy either). The gloves that she has to wear for her enhancing are better blended in since it goes with the style. Think Bridgeton because although the costumes weren’t 100% historically accurate, they do get creative with the patterns and seem more fun for teens to wear (Emma too, not the costume critique but the shapes).

Biana and Fitz: I’ve already drawn desi! Biana (and have received wonderful feedback, thank u:) but I do think the south Asian fashion, especially the one linked to formal occasions, truly fit the Vackers. I will admit that I do not know nearly enough about south Asian dress and the significance but if there are any aspects that hold cultural significance that I shouldn’t use, I’ll gladly change whatever needs to be change in my very loose idea of it.

With all the layering and excess of gold and rich materials, it screams royalty, which is essentially what the Vackers are in the Elvin world. Plus, in L*ura’s artwork, they’re wearing just that although just from a different culture? Idk what era or country it’s based off of, it could very well be intentional since elves…. But with tiktok, I’ve seen many people style their traditional skirts, tops and saris to make a more contemporary silhouette that works better for everyday like and it’d be fun to imagine that Fitz and Biana do that as well.

On top of that, all the accessories would chime as they walk: bringing attention to the high status, and finding Della and Biana when invisible. They would probably tone it down for school since everyone has uniforms but play around with accessories or wear a sari instead of a cape. For formal occasions, these guys look like gods. Decked out in the finest fabrics, gold and turning heads. I’d like to believe that they have their initials embroidered onto their clothing and some ‘fans’ like to collect whatever items they’ve forgotten as ‘rare finds’. It’s pretty creepy but they could resell if for $$$. Of course, with all the pressure around being picture perfect, the two youngest Vackers would be really chill when they’re at home.

Keefe: With the art I’ve seen of Lady Gisela, I think Keefe’s family would be Eastern European as it looks like she’s wearing a kokoshnik. It also looks like she’s from medieval times but I’ll skip past that. So Slavic, which is kind of sad because Keefe with an Australian accent would’ve been very cool. Now onto the Hair™️. He’d probably be forced by his parents to wear the traditional white shirts and red embroidery when living his day to day life. Although I think Keefe would rebel, as he always does, by making his own designs with a needle and thread, turning a previously parent dominated item of clothing into his own. He’d also wear a lot of pearls (in necklaces, earrings, bracelets) since they were so prominent in the Eastern European royalty (thinking of the ball the Tsars held). If he’s doing training with Ro, he’d probably be wearing a breathable Rubakha with a military style jacket on top (if he’s not too sweaty).

He’s probably got a few fur capes for formal occasions which embroidery on them and expensive lining. And a couple of ushankas. He’s also definitely raided his mother’s closet filled with those scarves babushkas always wear and turned them into soft sculptures or stretched out to form a canvas.

11 - first impressions of your fictives

Woah, I don’t know who to answer this- mostly because I’m like, should everyone say their thing? Since you know, everyone has different perspectives? To keep the answer short, I’ll just say my point of view! And if anyone has specific people they wanna ask, you can ask again! Actually, starting now, if you guys want someone specific to answer you can say so!

So... I won’t state everyone, because there’s a lot of people, but I‘ll do the people I’ve talked to properly!

Chara - Scary and really serious, like, they don’t have to tell me anything I could totally just leave the room if they gave me a glare. Even if they’re shorter than me, they have this like vibe that tells you that they don’t mess around

Kris - I thought he’d be quiet at first, he didn’t move a lot, but then he was suuper welcoming and dragged me into a lot of stuff- honestly he really helped me into getting used to front a lot! It felt safer when he was around, especially in my first days

Mister Crowley - he looked really business-y, but I liked him. I thought he was cool, and then he ended up being one of my dads! I thought he’d be a more angry person, but he’d rather lounge on a sofa

Miss Toriel - she’s soft! And she’s such a good mom.. she’s so supportive of everyone and just wants everyone to feel safe and happy! She really cares

MJ - I won’t lie, I was like super weirded out, excited, and worried ALL at the same time. Like, I was just is she gonna be okay here, like is it gonna be weird? And then you know, she found out I liked her this whole time and I found out too I think, and I guess we’re.. together now?

Miss Undyne - very loud, super supportive, and i was afraid that she’d just supplex me if she wanted to. She kinda yells a lot- but to support you!

Frisk - finally, someone else who gets to be called “baby”!

Mister MTT - I was honestly really nervous to meet him.. I was the first person he talked to- and that fear of when new members say “oh I’ve been here a while now!” Is real. Then I saw Frisk run over to jump all over him and he was really cool. He’s super flamboyant and when he talks in the body, he still sounds like a celebrity! He really cares though, I think that’s awesome

Miss Fluttershy - she’s kind of like the show.. uh, I won’t lie, I was a little tired after the first few days..? because she was panicking almost the whole time for two days straight and the emotional bleed was pret-ty intense so we were kind of having a panic attack non-stop for a while..? After that was over, she apologized and was really nice about it! Also ponies are tall??? I’m 5’6 or something and I forgot how much taller horses are after I saw how tall she was- and that’s a pony- geez

Miss Tempest - Uh, pretty angry.. when she and Miss Fluttershy came to the system at the same time, they apparently got a flood of memories of recent events so.. it’s like they got. A little run through of what they were getting into- so Miss Tempest got a quick summary of everything and that’s what got her mad when we first met..
