i feel like so much of genshins writing is Like That because more often than not they go for the bare minimum easiest writing decisions, not out of laziness but out of a desire to stretch content out for as long as possible so as to keep their players in for the long run

#also hte fact that everything has to revolve around the traveler and it is nearly impossible to know any of the world or characters outside #of the travelers existence definitely has something to do with it #huge reason why the character demos (and im thinking of al haitham's specifically) are so delightful #theyre allowed to exist as their own characters irrespective of the protagonist for a blissfully sweet 3 minutes #ramblings

cw ; suggestive, written before kaveh's release. i know nothing abt his character tbh i haven't even played the archon quest but he was cute in alhaithams demo so here we are 😋

"hey, shhh!" kaveh whisper-shouts at you as you open the fridge with a rather violent tug. you snicker at his serious expression, only to quickly clap a hand over your mouth when he widens his eyes dramatically at you. "sorry, jeez," you roll your eyes teasingly, "just wanted to get my ice-cream!" you wave the small popsicle at him with a grin, and his gaze softens.

"i know, i know. sorry if i'm being annoying about being quiet, i'm just worried about-" here kaveh pauses for an exaggerated groan, "-him getting upset." tossing the wrapper into the trash, you hop onto the counter and start licking the popsicle, "you shouldn't be so mean to haitham, kaveh. you know he's doing you a favour by letting you stay." "but babe," your boyfriend whines, stepping closer and placing his hands on either side of you; effectively caging you in, which you're pretty sure is what he wants, "he's so materialistic and overly logical about everything! it really gets on my nerves."

kaveh pouts up at you, jutting out his lower lip – you're pretty sure he wants you to comfort him. so, stifling your laughter, you pet his hair, stroking his head like you would to a cat, "awww, poor you." "yes, poor me," he lets his eyes slide shut in bliss as he leans up into your touch, "here's the part where you make me feel better." "dumbass," you shove him playfully, "you can taste my popsicle if you want." "really?" a mischievous smirk curves his lips, and you regret saying that already.

because the next thing you know, kaveh has his lips pressed against yours, tongue darting inside your mouth for just long enough to leave your head spinning. then as if nothing happened, he pulls away with an innocent smile, "strawberry is my favourite flavour too!" you frown at him, though it's difficult to remain upset when when the feeling of his mouth on yours is still driving you crazy. so you settle for rolling your eyes skyward before looping your arms around his neck, "idiot." "hey, i'll have you know that i graduated from the akademiya with honours." "mhmm," you bump your forehead against his, and he smiles, "can i kiss you again?" "all night long, pretty boy."

and that's how you end up with kaveh nipping at your jawline and smearing messy kisses down your neck in al-haitham's kitchen at two in the morning. "babe-" you try to scold him even as your fingers tangle in his blonde hair, "what happened to being quiet?" he looks up and meets your gaze with a cheeky wink, "changed my mind, just want to make you loud now~"

"ahem." a cough sounds from behind you, and you both spin around sharply only to be met with the grumpy face of a clearly sleep-deprived haitham. "oh no," you gasp at being caught in such a compromising position – this is embarrassing. kaveh doesn't even bother hiding his irritation at being interrupted, but before he can open his mouth to snap at his roommate, al-haitham simply points to something in front of you, "you're blocking the coffee machine." "ah! i'm sorry," you both sidle away as best as you can before rushing to kaveh's room and collapsing in a pile on the bed.

you can't help it, you burst into laughter the minute the door shuts, "that was so awkward! but also weirdly funny." "did you see the way he was clutching his mug? he looked like he was one paper away from burning down the akademiya," kaveh snickers, and that sets you off into another peal of giggles. when the two of you have calmed down, you poke him in the chest, "we are never making out anywhere except your bedroom again." "point taken," kaveh raises his hands in surrender, but a second later he's got that familiar smirk on his face, "so can we pick up where we left off?"

Casual analysis of graphic design and composition (ft. a bit of colour theory) since I’m a bit rusty and haven’t thought about them in a while

Hm? Some shots in Al-Haitham’s and Kaveh’s demos share a similar composition…

But it’s interesting that the more logical one uses informal symmetry in his character title card and the more emotional one uses formal symmetry… So many rectangles in Kaveh’s card (‘course it helps that hanzi characters are in squares)… It’s kinda surprising, but still it brings out the flow of the illustration well. (Of course, Chinese hanzi can be read horizontally or vertically, so they’ve more freedom in typography, but I bet they changed the graphic layout a bit for the English demo…)

hah, yeah, I thought so. See how Kaveh’s cape can’t frame the center boxes anymore, and how there’s no space to the right of the synopsis in the upper right, and most of all how the two squares on the bottom left is now a quarter of the original size, leaving an empty space there (though if they rotated the words vertically it could fit into the rectangular space well).

Al-Haitham’s English title card isn’t bad, per se, but they could’ve put some shadow on the left side of the illustration so the text could stand out, and move the three green lines to the right side a bit more, so not everything is slightly to the left side when there’s no reason to. (The negative space on the two sides in the Chinese version is roughly the same size.)

These two shots are both long shots that show the character’s full body, but Al-Haitham is in a slightly low angle, and Kaveh is eye-level with the “camera”

This one’s another low angle full shot with Al-Haitham’s lower body, with a bunch of analogous colours. Also this one’s background uses formal symmetry again (even reflecting off the ground) while the placement of the characters are in informal symmetry (the large image of Al-Haitham balances out the small figures near the fountain)

i saw you reblogged something from with the tags saying you dont want to infodump about languages in teyvat but fun fact. i would Love to hear your thoughts about language in teyvat. i actually think there's evidence to support regional dialects apart from a common tongue that is spoken, but I would love to hear your thoughts

So, I will simply answer both of y'all here since you asked similar questions. Hope you don't mind ;)

There's this thing, it's an actual field of study in Teyvat, called the origin of language.

The Academya has these principals, to avoid their students going insane, called the cardinal sins. You might know them from Al Haitham's and Cyno's demos(? Either demos or teasers), it's also in Al Haitham's story quest and shit, either way, these are the principals.

Most of these are legit very interesting because they are an extension of Celestia's will as the students that study them go crazy because they've found out something they shouldn't.

Now, for the sake of this theory let's ignore the others and look at just the fourth one.

Why would Etymology be so bad? You may ask.

Well! It's *puts tinfoil hat on* because of aliens.

Kidding. But not really.

So, brief history of the founding of Teyvat.

In an era known as the "old world," dragons and vishaps are the overlords of the world, with the Seven Sovereigns — dragon-lords at the apex of raw, whom ruled over seven nations, and each land they inhabited was attuned to their presence.

At some point, the Primordial One, also known as the "eternal throne of the heavens," appears in the world and colonizes the shit out of it like he goes ham, kills all the dragon lord, creates four shades, reshapes the world almost entirely.

After around 400 years, the Primordial One finishes preparing the world for the arrival of humanity.

Yes, Arrival. Humans are not native to Teyvat.

Humanity moves there and founds a gigantic civilization that last the entirety of Teyvat, which flourishes under the control of the first who came. It's destroyed later for complex reason, whatever whatever...

Thing is! Thing is! All humans descend from this one specific civilation and they speak one single language. Now, that leads me to believe that the reasln people from Sneznaya to Inazuma all speak the same language is because in Teyvat language doesn't seem to drift tremendously, like we can read shit from archon war time and shit.

It's like language not drifting is one of Teyvat's many laws and odd principles.

And yeah! That definitely could be narrative and handwaving but it's weird to handwaved shit when it's part of a much larger theory and shit.

So yeah, unified language theory.

Just the fact that Kaveh and Al-haitham may seem to hate each other, but they have no qualms drinking together with friends. It's just…. Idk. I need to figure out Kaveh again. I was gonna write something for him before, but I am SO GLAD I waited OTL

I think it's that his speaking dialogue conflicts a lot with people's voice lines about him. Like Al-haitham makes him out to be a sensitive gullible tempermental person. He's said to be a romanticist and an idealist. But his speaking dialogue…. It doesn't necessarily conflict. But the fact he doesn't exactly seem to be those things is what makes him interesting ig???? Idk. I need to figure it out. LOL

He also built a house right about a withering zone, so he's an idiot, which like…. increases his charm by a billion u/////u

they say patience is a virtue and in this case, yes, because i did not expect such nuances of kaveh to drop. at first, i also expected his relationship with alhaitham to be more straightforward, making kaveh a rather simple guy. i'm glad that is not the case though!

his dialogue is interesting! if he was gullible, he would definitely believe that alhaitham is someone meek as he claims to be. if he was gullible, he wouldn't be praising alhaitham with an edge in his voice.

and you're so right... he not only has depth but his brain is the size of a pea, and i love that about him.
