The fact that the Nostromo's computer is called Mother. The fact that xenomorphs are born from an unwanted pregnancy. The fact that Ripley is a mother who'll never see her child again. The fact that Newt is a child who'll never see her mother again. The fact that they find solace in each other. The fact that the xenomorph queen is a vengeful mother. The fact that Ripley 8 is nicknamed Mother. The fact that the newborn kills it's mother. The fact that Ripley 8 kills it. The fact that Amanda Ripley stumbles into the same fate as her mother while looking for her.

This is my first time dipping into horror art. This piece was more difficult than I expected. There were a lot symmetrical structures which I found challenging to paint while maintaining a proper contrast between light and dark. In the end, I think it turned out alright

You know I was thinking more about why it is Alien: Isolation scares me more than any other horror game but it wasn't until I saw this video that I figured it out.
None of that was scripted. 99% of Alien: Isolation's horror happens totally organically within the context of gameplay like that. There are very rarely scripted jumpscares, no mandatory combat encounters at all and no set path the Alien follows. The game just drops you into a relatively open ended area with an objective and says "it's in here somewhere and the only way out is through, good luck." Because the Alien is unpredictable and highly adaptive there's no 100% safe route to take or reliable place to hide so you live or die based solely on your own moment to moment instincts. This creates an extra layer of pressure and uncertainty that is genuinely paralyzing.

In a shocking twist I have still not escaped medical. For reasons I feel are self evident this is a rare game where I don't mind getting stuck and dying repeatedly. @isthesun and I are gonna see y'all then!

Been thinking about the differences between the xenomorph in Alien and the ones from Aliens, and how that fits into their biology
The original xenomorph used stealth to hunt, picked people off one by one, and used humans to create more facehugger eggs in the directors cut
The xenomorphs from Aliens have more armor, swarm their prey, and have a queen that lays facehugger eggs
Now obviously the out of universe reason is that Alien is a horror film and Aliens is an action-horror film (that and they had to put more armor on the xenos in Aliens because the costumes were fragile)
But in-universe I think the differences are because of the different circumstances the xenos were in, namely the presence of a queen and a lot of other xenos
The xenomorph in Alien was the only member of it's species in the area, and it's death would mean the loss of a chance for it's species to populate a new habitat. Because of this, the lone xeno had to be more cautious, resorting to only attacking lone prey and hiding until the area was secured. Turning prey into eggs might be a secondary reproductive tactic that xenos use if a queen is not present. This tactic is less viable because it requires prey to turn into eggs and then more prey to be infested, but it can hold them over until a queen can be created.
We saw this tactic get taken further in the game Alien: Isolation, where multiple unarmored xenomorphs had infested a large spaceship but no queen had yet been made, so the xenos still hunted alone and used stealth instead of swarm tactics
The xenomorphs in Aliens, on the other hand, have had time to establish a large presence on a planet, and do have a queen laying eggs. That means that individual xenos don't have to worry about self preservation as much, and can be a little more reckless. These xenos start displaying insect-like behavior, swarming their prey and protecting the nest. They develop more armor that might make them bulkier but also makes them more durable when swarming. This behavior is more effective with dealing with large groups of dangerous prey, as seen in Aliens
Can you tell I'm kinda autistic about these creatures?
