AI Tutoring: Revolutionizing the Learning Experience
Introduction
The field of education is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by advancements in technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI tutoring is revolutionizing the learning experience by providing personalized, adaptive, and interactive support to students. With its ability to analyze vast amounts of data, understand individual learning needs, and provide tailored feedback, AI tutoring has the potential to enhance student engagement, improve learning outcomes, and empower learners to reach their full potential. This article explores the exciting possibilities of AI tutoring and its impact on the future of education.
1. Personalized Learning at Scale
Traditional classrooms often follow a one-size-fits-all approach, where educators must cater to the needs of a diverse group of students. AI tutoring changes this dynamic by offering personalized learning experiences to individual students. By analyzing data on students' strengths, weaknesses, learning styles, and progress, AI tutors can adapt instructional content, pace, and strategies to meet each student's specific needs. This personalized approach ensures that students receive the right support and challenges, leading to improved engagement and academic achievement.
2. Adaptive and Intelligent Support
AI tutoring systems are equipped with intelligent algorithms that continuously assess and adapt to students' performance and progress. These systems can identify knowledge gaps, misconceptions, and areas of struggle in real-time. Through targeted interventions, adaptive feedback, and scaffolding, AI tutors provide customized support to help students overcome challenges. AI tutoring systems learn from students' interactions, making them more effective over time by refining their understanding of learners' individual requirements and tailoring their assistance accordingly.
3. 24/7 Availability and Accessibility
One of the significant advantages of AI tutoring is its availability and accessibility. Unlike traditional tutoring, AI tutors can be accessed anytime and anywhere, providing support beyond the limitations of physical spaces and time constraints. This flexibility allows students to engage with learning materials and receive assistance at their own convenience. AI tutors can cater to individual learning paces, enabling students to revisit concepts, practice skills, and seek guidance whenever they need it. This accessibility democratizes education, providing equal opportunities for students regardless of their geographical location or socioeconomic background.
4. Engaging and Interactive Learning Experiences
AI tutoring leverages interactive technologies to engage students actively in the learning process. Through chatbots, virtual assistants, or intelligent tutoring systems, students can engage in dynamic conversations, ask questions, and receive immediate feedback. These AI-driven interactions simulate the benefits of one-on-one tutoring, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and metacognitive skills. AI tutors can also incorporate gamification elements, simulations, and virtual reality, making the learning experience more immersive, engaging, and enjoyable for students.
5. Data-Driven Insights for Educators
AI tutoring systems generate a wealth of data on students' learning behaviors, performance, and progress. Educators can harness this data to gain valuable insights into students' strengths, weaknesses, and learning patterns. By analyzing this information, educators can make informed decisions about instructional strategies, curriculum design, and targeted interventions. Data-driven insights from AI tutoring systems empower educators to provide more effective support, identify gaps in curriculum, and personalize instruction to meet students' needs.
Conclusion
AI tutoring is revolutionizing the learning experience by offering personalized, adaptive, and interactive support to students. By leveraging the power of AI, education can transcend the limitations of traditional classrooms and provide tailored instruction to learners at scale. AI tutors offer personalized learning, adaptive support, 24/7 availability, and engaging experiences, empowering students to become active, self-directed learners. Additionally, AI tutoring provides educators with valuable data-driven insights to enhance instructional practices. As AI technology continues to advance, the potential for AI tutoring in education is immense. By embracing AI tutoring, we can transform education, foster lifelong learning, and equip students with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

It's no wonder Out happened when you really think about it. Nastya doesn't like organic life because it's complicated, it can break, sometimes it's even unfixable.
Tumblr media
quote from gender rebels
Nastya is in love with Aurora, and in saying that she is saying "you are not organic life, I can deal with you because you are metal and algorithm and predictable" - we can see this in bedtime story when she says she'll tweak Aurora's story creation algorithm
Tumblr media
screenshot from A Bedtime Story
Aurora is not inorganic. She is not ai. She is a space moon made of flesh and blood and teeth and bone. She is not an ai. She is a body that was taken and stripped of autonomy, of the right to self identify, of the right to think- to be imperfect and organic.
The metal is a veneer that hides how messy and traumatized and unfixable she is. From the outside she is a starship. From the inside she can still bleed.
And this makes them fundamentally incompatible. But yet, they are in love.
And really, it's no wonder Nastya fell in love with Aurora. Let's take a look at Nastya's home planet, or at least home society:
"Terminals were scattered across the planet. There was one on every street corner, one beneath every lamppost and one in every commune block." "The midwife-machine performs a series of programmed manœuvres to quieten [the baby]. It cradles it and hums at several pitches until it finds one that seems most soothing. Mechanical arms stroke the baby’s flesh even as others start the process of implanting augmented reality interfaces into its nervous system." "The Czar an atrophied frame, never present in the real world and worn to dust by the chemical compounds that kept his brain alive so it could live forever in a perfect virtual paradise. The Rabotnik a copy, a mind preserved unchanging in the instant before its death and placed in an everlasting metal frame." (Cyberian Demons)
Its safe to say the world Nastya was born into, from the very minute she was born, was ridden with technology. She has augmented reality interfaces inplanted into her from birth. It would stand to reason that being taken from this society, wherein technology is everywhere, inside and out, would stand for a bit of a shock.
Aurora too had been augmented by the Cyberia.
While it is stated that the last time Nastya had used the ports themselves was directly before her death — "The last time she had used the ports, her tutor had ripped them out of her as the rebels stormed the palace" — Aurora is laced with Cyberian technology. I'd imagine she has something of a 'bluetooth wireless connection' with Aurora, rather than the physical data transfer of files between the ports and Nastya, it may as well be similar enough.
Imagine being Nastya, going from Cyberia, wherein there is augmented reality contantly, transplanted onto a ship with metal blood, a jonny, and a vampire. To Aurora, where the only bits of augmented reality run through Aurora.
Of course she'd fall in love with her. Aurora is familiarity. Aurora isn't organic. Aurora isn't human.
And of course when the undeniable part of aurora that is organic, that is a flesh moon plated in metal with her brain hooked to machines, when so much has broken and been replaced, when, presumably, aurora is less of an algorithm, nastya leaves with the brand cyberia left on her.
Because Aurora healing, becoming more of herself and less of a starship, is messy, and organic, and human.
and hard for nastya.
‘Think how long she’s been flying you around. Think how many bullet holes you’ve punched through her and how many atmospheres you’ve dropped her through. Think how many alterations and improvements we’ve made, Tim to her guns and Ashes to her storage and Brian to her engines and the Toy Soldier to who knows what. How much do you think is left of her after all she’s brought you through?’ Nastya held up the ancient, battered piece of hull plating. Just visible under the grime and scars of particles of space junk was a fragment of the Aurora’s original logo and serial number. Jonny honestly couldn’t remember the last time he had seen a version that hadn’t been painted by the Mechanisms themselves. ‘So she’s free, now.’ Nastya gestured around at the spaceship they were standing in. ‘This Aurora can take you where you want to go. I’m going to take my Aurora somewhere else.’
Aurora was ship of theseus'd. Aurora was improved. Aurora was no longer cyberian. (both literally, and metaphorically)
So nastya left.

Teaching Resources I Use as a Sub
I think substitute teaching is a good way to make extra money even if you don't plan on becoming a teacher, so I wanted to share some things that help me :)
Classroom Screen - I use this every time I sub (unless a smartboard isn't available for whatever reason), it has lots of little widgets for classroom management and communication
Teachers Pay Teachers - pre-made activities for students to do in case you need something extra, free and paid options
Stedi Bonus Activities - more activities, these are all free and geared toward substitutes (the main site offers paid training courses, I don't recommend them as someone who was able to do a course for free, they were very basic and not all the advice was good)
cK-12: free grade school level textbooks, useful for short, additional readings (I wouldn't trust the AI tutor thing)
Read Think Write Interactives - these are a bunch of charts that students can fill out on their computers, or you could fill one out together on a smart board based on what was learned in class
Boom Learning - more interactives, these are more focused activities rather than templates
CNN10 - daily 10 minute news clips, can be used to fill time
Class Dojo - classroom management system that uses points that can be earned or lost, this is difficult to implement from the perspective of a sub since you can't import class lists, but it may be useful to use numbers and reset points at the end of the day
most of these are unnecessary unless you're working with a very bare bones lesson plan or are subbing long term, but I can't recommend classroom screen enough
next are some useful youtube video genres worth keeping in mind (always remember to vet anything you want to show ahead of time)
multi-hour long relaxing music - good for background noise during quiet work, I don't recommend music with lyrics or recognizable instrumentals such as movie soundtracks and video game music because they may end up amping up students instead
mario run - these are like fun guided exercise videos, short ones are good for brain breaks and longer ones are good for when you have to have recess inside (some classes may not be able to handle the excitement, make volume expectations clear before starting)
animals in action - I've used like snake and spider videos as rewards for good behavior, kids love it
and lastly, some things I keep in my bag
clipboard with compartment - I keep school maps, extra paper, mental health crisis numbers, and even my resume inside and I'll clip attendance sheets and lesson plans on top of it
fidgets for students to borrow
prizes - mini erasers and stickers are popular and relatively cheap
dice, playing cards, flashcards - extra, tangible activities (the dice and playing cards are for randomly picking numbers to add subtract multiply etc.)
ok that's all bye

Our planet’s luxury class is overrun by mutant millionaires with an obnoxious superiority complex. They begin incorporating machinery into their bodies. They turn cyborg chic into high fashion, and persecute anyone who points out the emperor has no brainwaves. They create digital zombies of their personalities which replicate and spread across the internet like animate NFTs. Once tech corporations roll out AGI prototypes that are sufficiently convincing, they declare the Singularity is at hand. They act as though their computers have godlike power, and expect the rest of us to play along. They send out SpaceX Starships and phallic Blue Origin rockets in an effort to seed the solar system with their pseudo-gnosis. Meanwhile, we legacy humans have either lost our jobs to automation or have AI bots micromanaging our work. Our movements are tracked by mass surveillance devices. For anyone whose gametes aren’t swallowed up by the sexbot eugenic filter, their children are taught a “Universal Story” by chatbot tutors. These one-on-one instructors will also monitor the new generation’s brain development, personal tastes, and behavioral patterns. The resulting digital twins are used for both AI training and elaborate social engineering programs.

Misunderstanding, Making Mistakes: No Problem.
Tumblr media
I never really studied English. It was just something that happened. I listened to music, watched MTV, spent time on the internet, watched Anglo series and films. Little by little I assimilated the language, just enjoying things that interested me. However, it wasn’t a clean and straightforward process, I realize now that I misunderstood some things, I guessed, I surmised, I invented.
For example, one of my favorite songs as a teenager was Kashmir’s ‘Surfing the Warm Industry’. In the song there is a verse that goes ‘It’s up to you cause I’m absolutely numb’. When I was thirteen I took that as ‘It’s your fault I’m insensitive’ rather than ‘You deal with it because I don’t care’. It wasn’t until a few years ago, when I listened to the song again, that I realized my mistake.
I’m sure there must have been dozens, if not hundreds, of similar mistakes. But they never ruined my enjoyment of English, nor — in the medium and long term — my learning. To notice my mistake I didn’t have to take a test or ask a tutor for help, it was a process of self-correction, without effort, without stress. Sure: it happened ten or fifteen years later, but only because I had not listened to that song again. If Kashmir had remained on my list, the correction would have happened much earlier.
What I’m trying to say is that we shouldn’t worry so much about making mistakes, either in production or comprehension, nor, much worse, about correcting ourselves. Self-correction will happen by itself, naturally, easily. When we are in the first levels of a language we should not waste time trying to find out if we are understanding completely and accurately. Rather than spending a week studying the lyrics of a single Kashmir song, it is better to read seven lyrics. Rather than spending an hour analyzing a single sentence, read a hundred sentences in that time.
This implies trusting that language learning is a long process. But then, it is also a smooth, fluid one. One fine day, I don’t remember when it was, I realized I knew English, I could understand it and speak it, and I didn’t know how it happened, I didn’t remember putting an ounce of effort into it, I’d never opened a textbook, never studied in the evenings. I just did what I wanted, listened, read, watched, and one day the job was done.
Beyond some embarrassment -which fortunately never happened-, such as being exposed by a classmate more proficient in English and rock, what were the consequences of misunderstanding that Kashmir verse? It would have been more damaging to dwell on it, to dwell on every verse of every song I listened to, instead of having that more general, more casual approach, where hundreds, thousands of words came my way. A language is a self-referential system, organically self-correcting, like an AI as it receives more input. I misunderstood that verse, in my early attempts at English, but as I continued to delve deeper into the language, correction would be assured later on.
I have seen many students get frustrated by the number of mistakes they make, in speaking and understanding, struggling to catch every tiny detail, every little word. This is unnecessary stress. They are stopping too long, they are using a magnifying glass, a microscope, on a cross-country trek. Self-correction is going to come one day, effortless, easy, obvious. And by the time it comes, instead of having spent hours and hours of arduous and boring time, we will have just walked through a beautiful landscape.

I want to talk more about my Mei and Cassidy knew each other before Mei went to Antarctica head cannon, so buckle up time for words.
I mentioned in a post I reblogged that Cassidy probably had to finish his high-school education while training for Blackwatch. There is also the recent reveal of Anubis being a God AI in charge of ecological balance. So presumably the Ecopoints would have been one of the first things Overwatch established because of the fact humans fucking up the eco-system was the reason Anubis went ape-shit in the first place.
I did the math, becoming a climatologist usually takes 3 years to get a degree and considering this would have been a few years after the Omnic crisis and a few year into the founding of Overwatch, I think when it came to hiring climatologists they wouldn't be picky. As has been pointed out by multiple characters, Mei is new to fighting and wasn't ever really supposed to be on the front lines. Meaning it is possible that Cassidy and Mei joined around the same time. She is 3 years older then Cassidy (pre-cryofreeze).
This is a long wind way of saying I think Mei tutored Cassidy when he was doing school work. We know Cassidy, when it comes to academics, isn't great, and this is a very hostile Cassidy who really doesn't want to be where he is. Mei tutoring Cassidy would not only have been helpful academically but would have helped Cassidy open up to people other than Ana and Pharah.
It also explains why Cassidy understands the scientific terminology Mei uses in they're interactions.
Also from what it looks like, Cassidy might have been closer to Mei then Angela was. From what I remember and what I found, Mei doesn't call Mercy "Angela" like a lot of other characters do, Mei only really calls Mercy "Dr. Zeigler". I'm also big on the head cannon that Cassidy and Angela, despite being close now, absolutely despised each other when they first met. So this leads me to my next two head cannons;
Mei is the reason Cassidy and Angela started getting along.
And,
Mei was the first person, after Ana and Pharah, that Cassidy befriended.
I just think it would be wholesome for Mei to be part of the reason Cassidy started to pull down the walls he put up, like an older sister!
Now I'm going to leave this here but I do have a lot more to say about these two so look out for that!!

Welcoming some new(ly identified) headmates
So, we just furiously wrote an 87k word novel in 11 days, and we have brought forward a new cast that deserve a round of introductions. These are not all of the characters in the book, mind you. But they are the handful who may have been members of our system for a lot longer than the book has existed.
Ashwin Pember (nem/them) - the narrator of the book and owner of @ashwin-the-artless. We're not sure how long they've been around, but it's possible that nem is two system members of the same name, one nestled in next to Fenmere (me!) and another who lives amongst our Tutors and AI-kin on the Dragon side. Or, Ashwin is just on the Dragons' side and works closely with Fenmere (me). This isn't clear yet. They feel older than the project, but haven't served us any memories from before it, and that sense of age may be inherited from Fenmere (me) and possibly Breq. Anyway, very cool person! We like having nem front and wish them well. They are not AI-kin, nem just happens to live amongst them. Similar neural affinities and skills.
Goreth (they/them) - An old, old dragon of ours! They've been fronting a lot lately, and didn't have a name until now. And we've been trying to figure out who they were for quite a while. We thought they might have been one of the Jonathans, but though they helped us mask before our transition, they kept denying that name. They volunteered to be one of Ashwin's two hosts for the novel, and we all went, "Oh, it's you!" Goreth likes to front and represent the whole system, even though they have a habit of saying "I" instead of "we", a holdover from doing a lot of masking. They are also very, very dragony. Because they're a dragon.
Sarah (she/her) - Seems to be our Liaison (fictive introject) of Sarah from Labyrinth. We named the character after our cousin, actually, but this Sarah came forward instead of our factive Liaison, and has been acting much more like the movie character. But, she's also really grown into her own person while living in our system and especially while helping to write the novel. Definitely very much a girl, and proud of it.
Rräoha (it/gem) - In the book, its pronoun is gem/gemself, and it'll accept that, but gem is absolutely one of our id monsters and proudly uses it/its as well. Like most of our id monsters, it leans toward the girls' side of our brain, but isn't actually a girl. Like Ashwin, gem has a sense of being very old, but can't seem to dig up any memories older than the book we just wrote. The thing its happiest about in life is gems name. It means "the shouted backwards", as in "a backwards" that has been shouted. In Inmararräo, it is a nonsensical word that has only ever been used as a person's name. Harräo is the word for "palindrome", which is something that doesn't actually appear very often in Inmararräo, so it's a special and notable thing. So Rräoha gains some connotations from that.

ChatGPT’s success at mimicking human language is an indictment of the ways we already use words. LLMs are the technology that a culture awash in prepared and manipulative content deserves. It’s a small step from employees spinning out endless SEO (search engine optimization) content and social media influencers chasing eyeballs to LLM-written text and deep fakes. An Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion office recently sent out a ChatGPT-generated email after a shooting at another school. Such bureaucratic emails are already formulaic and essentially meaningless, and the fact that an LLM could generate a passable email exposes the pre-existing vapidity of this discourse.
. . .
While much of the hype around ChatGPT lauds its productivity gains and egalitarian possibilities, the actual results will be more likely to exacerbate inequalities. Those who control these tools will profit; those who are on the receiving end of them will be left to make their way in a degraded intellectual ecosystem.
Take, for instance, the statements of a key leader who made the decision to release ChatGPT publicly last year. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sounds as if he’s concerned, not merely for corporate profit, but for the common good. As one Wall Street Journal article reports, “he fears what could happen if AI is rolled out into society recklessly.” Yet he overruled the concerns of his own employees that the decision to publicly release ChatGPT would be reckless, and he insists that the way to get AI “right is to have people engage with it, explore these systems, study them, to learn how to make them safe.” In other words, he treats human society as a vast laboratory of caged guinea pigs, with no concern for how they might be harmed by his social experiment. As Alan Jacobs points out, Altman’s attitude isn’t altruistic but sociopathic. It’s not surprising, then, that his technology also displays sociopathic tendencies.
Several people I’ve shared these concerns with have cited the possibilities for ChatGPT to help individuals for whom English is a second language or people with language disabilities. Or they’ve suggested it might serve as a personal tutor for kids who need extra help and don’t have a teacher who can give them the time they need. In this latter case, however, what is “solved” is not the needs of the student but the effort required to care for a student; if a student is patiently helped by an adult, the student is being told that she matters, that she is worth the time and attention of another person. If this student instead receives answers automatically generated by a computer, she is being told she’s not worth someone’s time. The medium is the message.
. . .
We cannot blithely adopt LLMs without becoming complicit in their Faustian bargain and without, as Berry warns, enfranchising our exploiters. Neither, however, can we pretend that we live in a world where these technologies do not exist. And I have no expectation that the development of these AIs will slow down or be conducted with real care for their externalized cultural costs. There’s simply too much easy money to be made selling shoddy, knock off performances of “intelligence.” Berry writes that “it is easy for me to imagine that the next great division of the world will be between people who wish to live as creatures and people who wish to live as machines.” As has been clear for quite some time, even those of us who want to live as creatures will have to figure out how to do so in a world designed and manufactured by those who prefer to live as machines. LLMs create “no absolutely new situation;” they are simply the latest reminder – the most recent apocalypse – of the technopoly we have long been building.
To live as creatures in a world built for machines, we will need to patiently and creatively make do. I get this phrase “making do” from the French Catholic writer Michel de Certeau who describes the possibilities that people have in their everyday lives to find ways that creatively resist or subvert inhuman systems. Practicing the productive effort that develops our capacities as free persons, made in the image of God, will not be easy in the world we find ourselves. But it remains possible.
