к ушам тянулись тонкие проводки наушников, но некому было слышать тоскливую музыку, иголочками стимулирующую мозг.

на площадке лестницы, опоясывающей внутренний дворник многоэтажного, похожего на конструктивистскую башню, здания, можно было спрятаться от тумана. перила оставляли на ладонях ржавчину, которая случайно перекочевала на щеку молодого человека, медленного спускающегося по спирали ступеней.

у него были мягкие черты лица, почти детские, с ямочками, контрастировавшие с нахмуренными густыми бровями, складкой на лбу и цепким взглядом темных глаз. он спускался в полной тишине, не зная о музыке в своих ушах, не думая об опасно дрожащих под ногами металлических перекладинах.

как только он (или это была она? плотные слои одежды не позволяли понять пол молодого человека) ступил на истрескавшийся асфальт колодца, стало гораздо светлее - верхние этажи здания занялись огнем. пламя вырывалось из окон, нежно вылизывая стены, но он не обращал на него никакого внимания. он опустился на колени и бережно поднял с земли нечто маленькое и хрупкое.

я тебя найду, обещаю, - прошептал он. - какие бы демоны не затащили тебя в глубины кошмаров, какие бы демоны не лишили тебя памяти и света в глазах. я знаю, что больше никогда не услышу твоего голоса, но это был мой выбор. зато я смогу увидеть тебя и спасти.

молодой человек - все-таки, это была девушка, хриплость голоса не смогла это скрыть - бережно спрятала свою находку и начертила несколько символов кайроса на нагретой жаром пожара стене. через несколько минут колодец горящего здания опустел, а темная фигура растворилась в тумане. лишь несколько искр от начертанных букв смешались с отблесками пламени.
