iwwv anon and PHEW OK. I def did not expect that essay and now I feel bad cause I KNOW my thots r not gonna be articulate or right. nonetheless! i think Oliver does qualify as an unreliable narrator cause hes. very oblivious but not like... Richard papen (who is a whole ass clown don't get me started on tsh) but not like addy from dare me(I will support till the day I die that dare me is da like I WILL die on this hill) who sees what she wants to see. 1/?

i think he just... thinks that his friends r diff ppl than they actually r? that doesnt rly make sense but yea. what I mean is that everything the characters do is coated in that empathetic view Oliver has which is usually wrong? so we don't get an objective look into the characters. meredith is my girl like I love the hot popular girl trope deconstruction but at the end of the book she's not at a great place like she's w someone that doesn't love her like she needs to be loved... 2/

I guess the most probable ending is that James never meets Oliver again and that everyone is kinda stuck on what happened but that's soo sad and I really don't want to think abt it. ngl iwwv wasn't like my fave book ever and I really don't understand why people are so obsessed with dark academia sometimes but what i rly liked abt the book is that despite how fucked up everyone is and how toxic they r to each other they do at heart care abt one another...3/

like I rly liked that esp cause at that point the only other da book (other than dare me!) that I had read was tsh and godd every character is so fuckinh annoying and they all hate each other. i was super confused by it till I saw someone saying that it's satire and I felt my mind explode. I feel like this is so long but I didnt rly properly answer all you wrote sorry! I think its a pretty good book tho it has some crazy quotes like hold awn Im gonna look at the highlighted stuff on my copy.. 4/

Oooh okay first of all dare me as a DA… I’ve only watched the show but like yeah I see the Elements for sure.

Also yeah I can understand what you mean abt Oliver being an unreliable narrator now… Ig my view of unreliable was more like they are purposefully twisting the truth or omitting facts or just literally don’t know shit but I get how personal bias can make the narrator unreliable. I do think the assertion that Oliver thinks his friends are different than they actually are makes sense. He sees James in a very positive light and though I like James a lot and think he is better than, like, Richard, he definitely has darker moments and manipulates Oliver at times (again I’d like to think it’s not the most nefarious thing in the world but like him just being shitty bc he’s in a dark place and he one, wants to do anything he can so Oliver doesn’t figure out he fought Richard so Oliver still thinks of him the same way/bc he knows Oliver would do something stupid like get himself arrested for James; and two, is very jealous that Oliver is with Meredith after Richard dies and has sort of a somewhat positive outcome from Richard’s death versus James being riddled with guilt and anger). And yeah, the probable ending is they never meet but I refuse to acknowledge that so LGNRG. Also that line makes me go CRAZZZZZZZZZZY!!! There are so many great lines, both using Shakespeare and on their own and its like okay give me a moment im going bonkers…

Personally, I haven’t read that many dark academia novels yet (bc for some reason i can barely finish a book rn sigh) but the concept interests me. I think what’s compelling is the setting/atmosphere of like ~mysterious college vibes~, and the idea of a sort of niche, obsessive bond and pursuit of knowledge with a tight knit group of friends (and the like inherent homoeroticism in every single DA elrngenrg). Like Dead Poet’s Society (the film I haven’t read the book) isn’t Dark in the same way most other dark academia is by like, obsession and death and manipulation (though of course there are dark elements with Neil’s storyline), but I think the other building blocks of academia are present there in a more wholesome way and you can see why people are drawn to that idea. As for the more Dark aspects I think it’s interesting to analyze things like group psyche, obsession, manipulation, etc, like what went wrong for everything to take such a dark turn???

But, like everything else, it really has to be done well or else its just like okay….… I’ve tried to read TSH twice and I may try again but from the 100+ ish pages I read I totally get what you mean. IWWV is so interesting to me bc the characters are all very compelling and multifaceted and I like that they are a close friendship, we come in after 4 years of them spending all the time together and to me that is apparent. Like you said, we can see fissures and problems especially as the novel continues but there is care there between them. That also makes the decision to let Richard die much more interesting and sinister imo, as well as how all of them interact with each other after he dies, and how the roles of the group change without their “leader” so to speak. Also, maybe it’s just bc I like Shakespeare, but I think the academia part of IWWV is so much more accessible compared to TSH. Like I don’t know every Shakespeare play or anything so I didn’t understand every nuance or was like immediately like oh this is from Cymbeline or whatever the fuck, but you could understand the gist of things and it made sense that they spoke in Shakespeare lines bc that’s all they’ve been doing for four years and also theatre kids are Like That. Their pretention also provided any Layers to the story, like the parallels between the characters they play and their own arcs, how some of the lines echoed their own thots, foreshadowed, or they were able to say things through Shakespeare (I’m thinking of like, Oliver realized he loved James during Romeo and Juliet, the foreshadowing that James was going to ruin Richard’s life and that he dislikes Meredith/Richard when he quotes Mercutio at the start “A plague o’ both your houses”, the exchange Oliver and James had onstage and had that kiss during King Lear before Oliver was arrested,etc.) (Also I think the structure of some of the dialogue being formatted like a play really helped make it feel more realistic and immersive). Versus TSH which is just so pedantic and dense and hard to follow at times im like I get they are smart but what??? And maybe that’s part of the satire aspect (or maybe im dumb) but like donna I read TGF I know you are pretentious and info dump abt random obscure shit anyways so erglknerg. Like to me there was a Point to all of the academic Shakespeare stuff in IWWV and it was the soul of the book, and M.L. Rio made it very interesting—like the way that the directors reimagined the plays and had Julius Caesar be like a modern political play, the cool mirror shit in King Lear, the Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet performances where they did them at events and interacted with their environments (which were one of my favorite parts of the books bc I just think that concept is so interesting), etc. For TSH the shit they did literally just felt like “okay look at them they’re smart see you can’t even keep up!” like okay… I felt lost a lot and only like snapped into reality whenever Henry (?) was like oh… murder….. and even then I was like idk what this dude is saying but like he’s being darksided LMAO. And I also agree that it’s just like… Richard being thrown in the middle of this group could lend itself to some cool ideas but its hard to believe that he fits into the friendship group and hes just like hell yeah I love Greek so much and lets go kill this guy other than like okay ur gay and stupid and just want to impress Henry or whatever his name was (which he was but I digress). It’s just not as impactful to me as this close friend group falling apart. Ik TSH fans might be angry if they see this (and of course I haven’t finished the book so my perception may be warped but I also kno many ppl felt that way u did) bc I’ve seen ppl say IWWV is just like TSH but “lackluster” or whatever and while I can see some parallels (mostly b/w Richard and Henry and Alexander and Francis), I really think M.L. Rio expanded upon common DA tropes and the interesting parts of TSH but made it her own and interesting and oh yeah there are actually multiple compelling female characters and LGBT characters (and no incest)!!!

♛ What is an aspect of your muse that you’ve wanted to explore the most?

hhhhhhh i don’t know, it fluctuates a lot? Though it mainly changes between the worst time of her life, and the best, that being: post-academy fall/association uprooting + yuuki’s awakening + surprise, eva’s not actually dead for now VS. she’s happily married w five kids and has grown up a LOT since her teen years.

Bethy is a naturally orderly and strong-willed person who, after making some tough decisions, becomes totally dedicated to her job as a hunter; she was born into that world at the peak of their society being the descendant of the Averill line + the only child of Kaien Cross who is a hunting legend– whatever his current status may be, and despite having struggles related to the social/emotional complexity of balancing out the human world, vampire society, and her own place in those realms, she remains determined to play her part in maintaining the peace. UNFORTUNATELY for her, she relied too much on the Association– I mean, she revolves her entire self-worth on being a hunter, and when things collapse? She does too. She feels disgusted stupid and used and worthless.

The rug’s been pulled out from under her, the status of her mother being alive isn’t exactly stable– her best friends are gone (bc yeah im including eiri in this THAT’S HER BERRY ; O ; ), she’s so furious (half-rationally,half not-so-much) with Kaien she could actually KILL him, and then she’s carted off back home with her grandparents (Florence + Alexandria) to recover since she’s also sustained some physical injuries along with the heaps of emotional strain. She’s not okay for a long time, but she does recover and returns to HQ eventually. So, I guess I’d like some threads during the time of her recovery? It’s flexible enough since she doesn’t stay cooped up indoors the entire time she’s away; after the first few weeks of serious depression, she begins going out and doing normal non-huntery things. Not 100 percent all better, not even when she does come back, but away from the entire work situation, she’s healing and learning to rebuild herself, and her self-worth doesn’t revolve solely around work/the few friends she’s managed to make. She’s finally living for herself, muh bby i cant– i love bethy sm, she develops so much here

OTHERWISE, I JUST LOVE MOM/ADULT! BETHY. She’s the happiest, healthiest version of herself and has really grown comfortable with the ‘imperfection’ of her situation– I mean, she got to marry for love (after her grandfather tried to set the man on fire) which is something she thought she never could do, her sister in-law is an aristocrat married to Takuma Ichijou aka weirdo from the strongest vampire noble family, her best friends are KURAN PUREBLOODS, and she’s on speaking terms with Kaien so–. who’d have thought. she even survives twins.

The first broken/recovery timeframe might lead to some more flexibility plot-wise / crossover-ish sort of things? since she’s not really h u n t i n g and is existing quite normally (though that’s not to say she won’t pick up 1 of several weapons and fight if she needs to), but- IDK I KINDA JUST RAMBLED / INCOHERENTLY DUMPED STUFF HERE.

♛ Name one idea for a plot you’ve had but never gotten around to writing.

I’m not overly plot-specific when it comes to threading with people, but I’m always open to it. I guess one I’d like is really simple: strangers meet + have a pleasant convo over some form of public transportation / helping the other with something, kinda gets really personal in conversation since whatever they’re doing is taking a l o n g time, and they kindly part ways, thinking they won’t see each other again, then meeting again some time later in an either mundane situation or ‘uh so someone’s destroying the city’-level action. what happens from there depends on characters / story? I had a thread sort of like this, and it led to one of the best relationships Bethy ever had, but the mun deactivated and I’m still kinda, like, sad about it kfjdlkfjd

That, or maybe something like–??? one muse saves the other from something, and they somehow end up getting stuck together through a really bad situation and help each other out. AS U CAN SEE, I don’t, uh, plot a lot . . . o w q ;;

Arata and Eva, for sure but u knew that. It’s more just a matter of meee…….nnnot writing out their backstories, even though I have it all there. Arata (affectionately called RaRa/Rara ooc–) is a vampire hunter like Beth, from a really powerful family, who somehow ended up unofficially officially adopting 3 kids after a like, 7 yr old saved his punk 17 yr old butt from a vampire. he grew up, wears glasses for fashion bc he doesn’t need them, and is all around a really good guy; he’s kind of awkward and is a family disappointment, but he’s got hunting skills fo dayyyys, just ask the chunks of noble flesh for touching one of his bbys–. He’s no joke my favorite OC EVER, and if it weren’t for my inability to actually be active, i’d give him his own blog. I love RaRa, man.

As for Eva, she’s Elizabeth’s mother, for those who don’t know. She’s a fun character to write, though I don’t much for the above reasons of ‘no bio written for the public’–. She’s made mistakes, the big one sticking out as letting herself get cornered by the president (marrying kaien wasn’t one of her mistakes somehow), and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. As a consequence, she got bitten by a Pureblood, and the pres, being the opportunist he is, took advantage of that, locked her up, and held her prisoner for years. When she’s out, she’s got a lot of recovery to do, but she’s okay in the end. She’s also one of Bethy’s biggest influences, and where she learned her kindness/fun side from. bethy is a kind girl ok, she’s just got a few HIGHLY situational layers to get past– but yeah. I liked Eva so much I kept her alive; I can’t imagine my OCs without her now.

♛ Name one of your favorite tropes.

This is something I never really thought on before, since I don’t really pay attention to tropes. I don’t know what it would be called, but something pertaining to opposites or contradictions, I guess? Since, Bethy is practically a land-confused mermaid :’D and i associate her/gentle tides with water and the calmness+peace it brings her, but she herself, along with her family, is heavily fire-influenced, or in takashi’s case, WATER = NO, IM GOOD, THANK YOU. but somehow, it still works?

Same with her overall existence? she’s a beautiful liar/actress, but she doesn’t lie where it isn’t necessary. she has to keep her hunter/vampire involvement a secret– that’s something she’ll never casually spill, but she’s not really as closed off as she seems, the situation just needs to be right. ahh… bethy’s pretty open-minded to things despite how straight-laced she is, and it really shows later in life. love of her life = hunter from an incredibly nontraditional family. mother = lvl d vampire. two of her children = cursed twins. bffs = no joke all vamps. yuuki…eiri, zero– i dont think she has human friends outside of akemi. hhhhh….. ANYWAY, all of that, it’s far from the idea of ‘picture perfect’ she upholds through her early life, but in the end, it works out? and it is perfect, for her.

Not really a TROPE, i suppose . . . but she’s a bit of a mess in terms of contradictions both personally and thematically. if there’s a trope name for that, she’d fall into its category.

majoring in english

you decide to apply to work in a school which was close to your college

it seemed like a nice school, not too much drama but not too little

you apply with your closest friend at the time, Jaehwan,, who (thank god) already had found his soulmate honestly if you turned out to be soulmates with him you might die from that laughter 24/7

you both manage to get jobs but your departments are opposite sides of the school :(

he is over in the music and performing arts area

the first department meeting you go to you notice someone

even though he wasn’t wearing particularly smart clothes he might as well have been he looked like a model

while you’re staring at the beauty of this guy on the opposite side of the room to you someone pokes you in the shoulder

“I see you’ve noticed Mr Hwang Minhyun. Before you ask, hes room 311. I’m Mr Yoon Jisung, by the way, philosophy teacher, room 309. Nice to meet you!”

“haha yeah sorry he’s just,, very good looking. I’m y/n y/l/n, english teacher! I can’t remember my room number but uh nice to meet you too!”

the jisung guy turns to his computer and pulls up a file and searches up your name lol

“Ahh, y/n… you got lucky, you’re room 310. Right next to your new love interest Mr Hwang!”

now you have to face him every day

honestly you two never end up talking

you wave at each other occasionally in the corridor, sometimes he’ll pick you up a coffee from the machine and leave it on your desk but

nothing more really;;

that’s until one day you’re staying late to start planning classes for tomorrow

when you get a text from literally the LAST friend you have who also hasn’t found their soulmate

it’s only a sentence long but its enough to bring tears to your eyes

‘y/n, I found my soulmate!’

you want more than anything to be happy for them but you can’t help but feel useless

like why do you have to be the last out of everyone?? will you ever even find your soulmate?

a soft knock on the door interrupts your tears and minhyun walks in with two cups of coffee in one of those like cardboard things lol

“Hey, y/n... I could hear you from next door, what’s wrong?”

you don’t even have enough time to question how he managed to hear you through a brick wall before your tears are flowing again

you know how it is,, whenever someone is nice to you ; you always cry more lol

he puts down the coffee on your desk and pulls one of the chairs over to sit next to you

in complete silence he puts his arms around you and like;; cradles you while you cry and rubs your back and hands you tissues every so often

you swear that in between the blurs of tears you see a faint flash of red uhm

but you brush it off as it being a piece of his clothing and just;; continue letting out your emotions lol

when you’re finally done you sit up and thank him and he just smiles right back at you

“no need to thank me! do you want to tell me what’s up? if you don’t that’s totally fine but like sharing is caring…wait no i mean a problem shared is a problem halved”

you laugh at his mistake and mumble back

“i’m the last person left out of my friends who doesn’t have a soulmate…”

minhyun pats your shoulder when you say this and he leans down to look into your eyes

“Hey, y/n, that doesn’t mean anything!! Look at me!! I still haven’t found mine”

YOUR HEART STARTS SUDDENLY RACING AS YOU REMEMBER THE FLASH OF RED uhh 1+1=2 is this what you think this is??

but then you notice the red charity bracelet around his wrist and your hopes = gone

he winks at you and grabs a post-it note, jotting down a number and passing it to you with one of the cups of coffee

“I have to go work on my stuff for tomorrow, but if you ever need anything just call me and uhh enjoy your coffee!”

he stands up and starts to walk out the door and you shout a quick “thank you” and he just responds with an “anytime, y/n!”

you like text him almost immediately as you sip the coffee

somehow he… has put the right amount of milk and sugar like damn is this boy a magician or psychic or something ??????????

you end up texting until literally 2am

the next day you both turn up to work looking like you got dragged through a bush

minhyun pulls it off (he could pull of wearing a TRASH BAG) but… not sure if you can say the same about yourself lol

you keep this up for a good week

and you two are so close now even the students are starting to ship it

you can’t deny that you,, have feelings,, for minhyun

he’s just the right amount of kind and funny it’s amazing HE’S amazing

anYWAY y’all out here talking until 2am every night

until you find yourself falling super behind on the work and marking for your students

you literally lock yourself in your house one friday night and try to mark like 1000 english test papers

you’re not even 100 in and you’ve already forgotten how the hell english works

suddenly theres a knock at your door

its like 11pm so honestly… you’re confused who the hell is it

you grab your baseball bat and unlock the door to a very confused looking minhyun

“were you going to hit me with that?? I text you to say I was coming”

again you didn’t have time to question how the hell he worked out where you lived before you’re rushing back to find your phone

I actually don’t get that much hate! I never really pay them any mind bc I know as long as it is something I like that I will release it. I'm begging you, please don't look at me like that! Yuki: ....... Yuki: Don't touch me! *slap* Momo: Y-Yuki....... Tsukumo Ryou: Wow! This is amazing! Momo: It's not gonna stop at the weekly tabloids. Apparently there's some big names in the industry that are a part of this, so I'm trying to find out who those people are. Momo: The reason why they wanna expose this scandal is because of a grudge, out of righteous anger, or for money. If I get the names of everyone involved, then it'd be possible beat him to the punch and talk them out of it. Yuki: Any guesses so far? Momo: There's a lot of people.... And one of them is a really big name in the industry. Momo: ......Who? Momo: Top actress Asamiya Tomoe-san. Shizuo-san's wife. *click* Tsukumo Ryou: Right! I just remembered something.... Yuki: --I'll fucking kill you! Momo: Forgive me! Please, please forgive me! Tsukumo Ryou: I do apologize for bothering you while you're preoccupied, but Yuki. You may be close to Hoshikage, but I'll instantly know if you squeal to him. Tsukumo Ryou: You see, I've planted a spy in Hoshikage. With that, ding-ding-ding-ding! Let round two begin. *slam* Yuki: ......There's a spy in Hoshikage? Momo: God, he pisses me off! The gong only sounds once at the beginning of a new round! It only sounds four times at the end......! Yuki: I can't believe you put up with that man.... Like I said, don't get involved with weirdos. Momo: That's my line! Shizuo-san works you to the bone! You went to wash his car and shovel snow for him before, right? Yuki: Those were just excuses for him to give me pocket money. Shizuo-san is really good at taking care of people-- Momo: What part of that is good!? It was to the point where I was just like, "If the world's beloved Chiba keeps sending Yuki off on pointless errands, then I guess I'm gonna have to destroy the world!" (1) Yuki: It's better than some overly gaudy man who's insane! Even I knew that he was dangerous from the the instant I saw him. More importantly, why didn't you tell me about this sooner? Momo: You were busy with filming and composing, so I didn't wanna bother you about this.... I was gonna tell you once I figured out who the people doing the exposing were. Yuki: ......I genuinely thought you got corrupted by him and were fully on-board with his plan. Momo: That I'd sell Yamato for your sake? Yuki: Yeah.... Because you tend to worry and brood, Momo. Momo: You wouldn't have doubted it if it were Ban-san though, right? Yuki: I guess so. Ban's really dry, and nothing holds him down. (2) Momo: ......So that's how it is, huh!! I guess I'm sopping wet then!!! (3) Yuki: ......I never said anything about that. Look. Wet wipes are more valuable for cleaning, right? Good job. Momo: Being compared to cleaning goods doesn't make me happy! Even if it's praise! I'll soak you! I'm gonna drench you with condensation! Yuki: Sorry, sorry. Momo: *sob*.... I wanna be a man befitting of fresh laundry like Ban-san....... Yuki: It's fine. It'll just freeze on Mount Everest, after all. Momo: Mount Everest? (3) idk how the word 'wet' ended up as 'wetty' in Japanese but im dying this metaphor thing runs into ch 5.4 too
