Vlad looked imploringly at Agnes, and reached out to her.
'You wouldn't let them kill me, would you? You wouldn't let them do this to me? We could have... we might... you wouldn't, would you?'
The crowd hesitated. This sounded like an important plea. A hundred pairs of eyes stared at Agnes.
She took his hand. I suppose we could work on him, said Perdita. But Agnes thought about Escrow, and the queues, and the children playing while they waited, and how evil might come animal sharp in the night, or greyly by day on a list...
'Vlad,' she said gently, looking deep into his eyes, 'I'd even hold their coats.'
granny weatherwax was such a buzzkill for not letting her tear him apart <\3

"Er...you don't like me very much, do you," said Oats.
"I've hardly met you." [...]
"A lot of people don't like me as soon as they've met me," said Oats.
"I suppose that saves time," said Agnes, and cursed. Perdita had got through on that one, but Oats didn't seem to have noticed.

I love how much Nanny Ogg bullies Agnes about being a boring virgin, while also being glad she’s The Maiden to round up the little group.

I love Maskerade by Terry Pratchett with all my heart. I’m a Phantom of the Opera fan, and a musical fan in general, and then you got Agnes Nitt who is such a wonderful character and like.. UGH SO GOOD. I always read an Agnes Nitt book when I’m feeling low.

Maskerade is so funny. In other Witches books, the Witches fight against evil monarchs, an evil witch, hordes of elves, and vampires. In Maskerade, they faff about in Ankh-Morpork and get involved in a Scooby Doo plot

‘I saw him! Ooooooh yes! Wi’ his great black cloak and his white face with no eyes but only two holes where eyes should be! Ooohhhh! And—’
‘He had a mask on?’ said Agnes. The old man paused and shot her the dark look reserved for all those who insist on injecting a note of sanity when things are getting interestingly ghastly.

just reread Carpe Jugulum, and this time i am sympathising not with Agnes Nitt my beloved but with Mightily Oats. (the first time i read the book, i looked at him and really thought 'couldn't be me, i'm past this stage'. just goes to show, ahaha.)
when i first read the Witches series i was physically, viscerally resentful towards the older witches. now i hold Granny very, very dear to my heart, not least because she struggles with her base urges every day and wins, at least where it counts.
(i made wallpaper versions! get them hi-res here)
