A feature I noticed that Vimes, Granny Weatherwax, and Tiffany Aching, three of the most major discworld protagonists, have in common is that they all bear an immense anger that they use for good. Vimes has an anger that an eldritch vengeance demon sees as ideal, and yet has such self control that he contains not only the rage but the demon with it. Granny has her white-hot anger that she lets build inside of her until she releases it and gods help any that stand in her way when she does. And while Tiffany isn't as cynical or intimidating as the other two, I do believe that she holds the same righteous anger. When that little girl lets it out, literal gods fear her. And yet none of them let this anger make them abusive to those around them. Vimes might snap at people, Granny might seem a bit intimidating, and Tiffany might make the occasional stupid decision or comment out of anger, but they all ultimately have self control and will always direct that anger towards helping those that need it. Although, for your own safety, do not threaten Sam Vimes Junior, do not tell Granny Weatherwax what she is not allowed to do, and do not hurt Tiffany Aching's sheep.

my favorite thing about Magrat Garlick is that once per book she is allowed to go completely apeshit

Got blank nesting/matryoshka dolls for Christmas and decided to Pratchett them! Then Granny Weatherwax looked weird without a hat, so I had to make that too 😆

Sophie Hatter would make a good discworld witch (with some training on how not to use magic that is)

I finally finished Equal Rites (restarted really), and my Watsonian theory for why there weren’t any female wizards after Esk is as follows:
Some girl applicants decided that working as a maid and doing group- and self-study in the library during off-hours was preferable to interacting with wizards. All housework was done by enchanted household items until an unfortunate situation with the washroom and some minor flooding. Temporary enchantments are still used when they think they can get away with it.
A good portion of the student body is incognito. This is fairly easy to do, as wizards tend to be weedy and unathletic until reaching a certain age when they become fat and sedentary. Spells and potions for growing lush beards are traded among this group and improved upon every semester. Part of the Wizards’ Council might or might not be part of this group.
A few enterprising girls recognized the lack of a witch in Ankh-Morpork (at least one selling useful potions to the discrete customer) and jumped on filling the gap in the market. They’re officially part of the Seamstresses Guild, for legitimacy, because the client base has a lot of crossover, and to lock in a discount for fellow guild members.

ya know, screw the Disney princesses. The best role models for little girls are witchy girls. Off the top of my head I’d like to mention Hilda and Tiffany Aching from Discworld. Feel free to add.

Granny Weatherwax is one of my favorite characters in any piece of media ever, and I was recently thinking about why I like her so much. There are so many reasons, but I think one of them is that she's oddly comforting. Yes, she's rude and prickly and scary, but she always helps people when it matters. There's just something nice about the idea of someone who would always help you if you were in serious trouble, no matter what your problem is or even if you've talked bad about her. You could have spread a rumor about her and then have an eldritch monster about to kill you, and Granny Weatherwax would step in, send it running, and then give you a stern talking to while treating your wounds. In conclusion, Weatherwax 2024

There's a bit in Witches Abroad where, for plot reasons, Magrat has to destroy a dress. It's a beautiful dress, and folklorically, it's Cinderella's dress. And there's a piece of narration about how Magrat's heart broke, because she had dreams of having a dress like that, one that fit her, one that was beautiful (one to make her beautiful).
And I really think that it was a greater sacrifice than I've ever seen talked about. Witches Abroad is largely talked about in the context of Esme and Lily, I don't tend to see Magrat discussed much. But Magrat is a young woman who grew up poor and became a witch, and she's gawky and awkward and feels herself to be unlovely. And as much as she puts flowers in her hair and takes time about her appearance, there's never a moment (to this point in the series) where we've seen Magrat really feel comfortable in her own skin. She won't get that for several books yet. She's the junior witch of the trio, and although she respects Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax, we don't really see them respect her (yet).
And that dress represents a dream that is deeply personal. It represents, essentially, gender euphoria. Feeling lovely, wearing something beautiful made just for her. The dress represents the most secret desires of Magrat's heart. It's a trick, a trap, an enchantment, but it's enchanting because it knows exactly what she wants. And there is tragedy in Magrat making the very brave decision to tear it to shreds.
So much of Witches Abroad is about doing the right thing regardless of what a narrative thinks you should do. For Esme, it's being the good witch who knows herself and stands at the boundaries and doesn't lean on mirrors for power.
And Magrat's choice was part of breaking Lily's power. She doesn't get a lot of credit for making Choices in the way that Granny does in rejecting vampirism or like Tiffany in defeating the hiver. But this was a witches Choice none the less. Shred the dress, save the girl who got sucked into this because another witch made an evil choice. Responsibility before personal wants, as unfair as it is. And if that's not the core of witchery on the Disc, I don't know what is.

realized something highly unfortunate and it's how much a show about a young and hot granny weatherwax going through her apprenticeship as a witch would kick ass. it would be strictly necessary, however, to bookend each episode with a scene set in the present day of granny attending to her witch duties. i'm not letting them get away with not having an old woman play granny. maybe throw tiffany in there.

"What are we doing at a pumpkin farm of all places again?" (Esme)
"Dunno.... Halloween..?" (Gytha)
"Halloween?? It's January!" (Esme)
"Halloween is a state of mind, as you very well know. No need to be fastidious about it. " (Gytha)
"Fastidious, huh....? Well, that's me told. What's with Magrat anyway? Wasn't all this her idea?" (Esme)
"I can hear you, you know. And yes, it was. But... I don't know... All these pumpkins make me uncomfortable for some reason...." (Magrat)
