you loved your roommate, you really did. you didn't mind the excessive smoking or drinking or sleeping until 2pm, cause she was a nice person. but lily’s friends? they scared the hell out of you.

she only laughed when you told her.

“they're all harmless, trust me. i know a lot of the boys look kinda scary, but don't let them intimidate you. especially not gubler. he's got the whole dark and broody thing going on. but he's a good guy.”

and thats how you ended up going to a party with lily. well. it wasn't a party, more of a hangout.

you weren't an innocent sweet college girl, but standing in the middle of this house, you looked like an angel among devils. most of lily’s friends dressed in dark colours. more alt clothing, not like dark academia. you had put on a sexy as hell dark red dress, but you felt like you looked like a child.

you stayed sat on a sofa, and lily stayed near by, but was chatting to her friends. you were happily nursing a beer when you felt the sofa dip beside you. you glanced to your right to see matthew sitting there, a red solo cup in his hand that he drank from, before his eyes scoured over his friends in front of him, before landing on you. you realised you were staring, so you looked away quickly, but you knew he saw. you were just glad he didn't say anything. you were embarrassed enough.

you had to stop yourself from staring as a girl came up, practically leaping into matthew’s lap. she had a really pretty bralette on, and some shorts, and her short blonde hair bounced as she spoke. being bi was aa struggle. everyone was so good looking. she slowly stopped chatting, as she realised matthew wasn't responding to her.

“i was kinda hanging out with y/n,” he said to the girl, who just blushed lightly, “shit, my bad. i didn't think you guys were talking.”

she excused herself with a smile, before leaving.

“you know my name?” you asked, and he looked at you funny, “you're lil’s roommate.”

“i-i know, i just didn't think you knew who i was,” you said, and he shrugged, “we all know who you are. we make a point of knowing the pretty girls names.”

you didn't respond. didn't know how to.

“why did you tell her we were hanging out? we’re just sitting here,” you changed the subject, and he shrugged again, “thats hanging out. technically.”

“I guess,” you replied, and he looked to you, “do you want me to leave you alone?”

“no,” you said, meeting his gaze, “please don't leave me. i don't know anyone else here.”

he nodded, moving his arm so it rested on the back of the couch behind you, “don’t worry pretty girl. i'll take care of you.”

a few days later

“come on, lily, lets go,” artie whined as lily finished her makeup. she flipped him off, “beauty takes time. explains how you get ready so quickly.”

“where's your pretty roommate?” matthew asked, and lily raised a brow, but bit her tongue, “she's at the library. being a good student, or something.”

“we can pick her up on the way? gubler’s driving,” artie said, practically dragging lily out of the room. lily just laughed, “you know she's kinda scared of you guys, right?”

“no, really? I couldn't tell by her big wide doe eyes every time she sees us, and the fact that she goes all quiet,” artie teased, “she looked so uncomfortable when she came over to the house, i thought she was going to bolt.”

Matthew stayed quiet as he drove to the library, and waited outside when lily went in to kidnap you. he looked up to see lily dragging you out of the library, his lips quirking up as he watched you try hold onto the door handle as lily dragged you to the car. she opened the door and practically shoved you into the car, “shut up and get in! you have the rest of your life to study!”

“my test is at 9am! so I actually only have 12 hours!” you argued, grunting as you were shoved further into the car as lily climbed into the back beside you. she closed the door and rolled her eyes, “you're a smartie pants, you’ll be fine.” “i-i’m not even gonna argue anymore, I don't care. where are we going?” you sighed, putting on your seatbelt.

“we’re all meeting up in the park to drink and smoke. do you smoke, y/n?” artie glanced back to you as Matthew began to drive, “sometimes, yeah. i won't tonight, thought. cause I have that test tomorrow.”

“makes sense,” artie nodded, “i brought some sodas to mix with vodka and stuff, but you can just have the soda.”

“thanks,” you said softly, glancing out the window as you made your way to the park. when you got there, the four of you sat down on a blanket on the ground, and you happily hung out with them as they smoke and drank, and more of their friends began to join as well. eventually, lily and artie left to go... god knows where, and left you with Matthew.

you were both sitting in a comfortable silence, before you felt a warmth come over you. you looked to him, to see him moving back to sit after he had sat his jacket over your shoulders.

“i could see the goosebumps on your arms,” he said, and you nodded slowly, your smile beginning to grow as you put your arms through the sleeves, “thanks.”

he snorted a laugh, and you tilted your head as you looked to him. he smiled slightly as he explained, “you're drowning in my jacket. seriously. how tall are you?”

you rolled your eyes, “I'm 5′7. thats not exactly small.”

he deadpanned, “I'm 6′1. you're tiny.”

you scoffed, “I am not! take that back.”

“no, cause its true. you're tiny.”

you narrowed your eyes at him, and he just stared at you in return. you sighed and rolled your eyes, “I hate you.”

“you hate me? then give me my jacket back,” he said, beginning to smile again. “you’ll have to pry it off my body,” you challenged, folding your arms. he raised a brow, “oh, you're gonna regret that.”

“what?” you said, before you squealed as he easily pushed you to the ground, casually hanging over you, using one hand to prop himself up. you just giggled, feeling a little dizzy. he smiled, and you spoke before your brain could stop you, “you have a pretty smile.”

“yeah?” he asked, leaning down closer to you. you felt your heart skip a beat, before nodding slowly, “yeah.”

“everything about you is pretty,” he said quietly, resting his hand on your chin to tilt you head up before pressing his lips to yours. you could feel the coldness from the rings on his fingers, but the softness of his lips balanced it out. you slowly returned the kiss, enjoying it way too much to pull back. unfortunately, Matthew was the one to move away. he chuckled at seeing you pout, pecking your lips once before speaking, “i don’t want you to feel like i'm using you.”

you smiled softly, and this time, he felt his heart skip a beat, “i don’t feel like that.”

“good. cause I'm gonna do that again,” he said, before leaning down and capturing your lips with his again.

{ zendaya ☁ twenty six ☁ she/her } among the whispers around peach hollow, have you heard of daysia collins? no? well, let’s catch you up to speed. rumor has it, she’s been seen strolling around blueberry boulevard & have lived in peach hollow for six years. it’s good to have her around because i hear she’s a crisis counselor for a living. recent events must have her trembling because it hasn’t be long since everyone found out she flunked school. let’s hope they learned their lesson that the truth always catches up to you.

yall know me. i’m kim, i play winnie, and i’m one of the admins!! this is my damaged but optimistic baby, daysia. ITS PRONOUNCED LIKE DEJA VU :’) i just created her in november but she so quickly became my favorite muse to write. so buckle up! and pls plot w me. i am fragile and if i don’t get any plots i will hide in a dumpster, where i belong.

daysia jade, day, dj, deej – anything goes. she’s 23 and will turn her head to just about anything. she’s a spring baby born march, 1996.

her childhood was pretty good. she and her brother grew up a year apart, and her parents divorced early. early enough that daysia can barely remember a time where the family was hole, and likes it that way.

however, her father did not take the divorce well and turned to drugs – meth to be specific. he only saw the kids on weekends and even then, daysia and marcus absolutely knew what was happening. perhaps they didn’t know his choice of poison, but they knew that it was just that: poison.

he was never abusive and always took care of the kids, even if he was tweaking out of his mind. there were a few instances that were touch and go, like when he forgot to take dinner out of the oven and it caught fire, or when he forgot to change the sheets – little things that added up.

when daysia was 16 and marcus was 15, they were involved in a car accident. her dad was high behind the wheel, lost control of the car, and they hit the guard rail. they went over an embankment and down a short hill before the vehicle came to a complete stop, flipped over. she watched the life drain from her brother’s face, and never got into a car again.

a good deal of resentment built up for her father, but she remained stoic, even when he went to prison for drug charges and the dui he’d racked up that ultimately killed her brother. she didn’t let anyone know that she was hurting, because she numbed it all. she threw herself into her school work and her artwork, painting constantly. melting colors together somehow helped her cope. she could get her emotions out on paper. in fact, that still rings true today. in her bedroom of the apartment she lives in, she has covered one of the walls in canvas and paints over and over.

in an effort to start life over, daysia left detroit when she graduated high school. she transferred to peach hollow where she went to winchester university, not wanting a lot of attention. this is where she really came to life.

daysia was able to push michigan to the back of her mind entirely, because peach hollow had so much to offer. the people were better. the music was better. the parties were better. the education was better. there wasn’t a single thing she missed from home aside from her mother, who she kept in regular contact with and still does. they’re always texting and facetime before bed every night.

she came alive. college changed her. she was studying a subject that interested her and meeting people who didn’t have to know about her past. she did, and does everything to keep michigan her dirty little secret. she liked the party scene, but only drank or smoked weed. she refuses to touch anything that might turn her into her father. she was even hired on as a crisis counselor for a local hotline, contractual to her graduation.

in the past month, daysia has plummeted, however. nobody would ever be able to tell. she is the queen of poker face, an absolute delight to be around. she can be a little aloof, and is constantly stoned, but it’s how she gets through the day. she is an absolute goof, loves to crack jokes and make people laugh. she loves to laugh herself. these are all traits that show and cover the inner turmoil constantly trying to bubble to the surface.

daysia received word that her father passed away in jail. he overdosed, and she wasn’t sure how to feel. so she didn’t. she did, however, stop doing school work and started drinking more. she flunked out of school and lost her job.

at the same time, she got into her first serious relationship. day fell hard and fast for her best friend, mac. their relationship started out much like a fairy tale. she wanted to keep it like that forever, but her addiction and ptsd took over. she tried her very hardest to hold onto mac, but he moved back to nyc with their best friend, dom, in tow. she still misses them to this day and finds it hard to keep friends like she kept them close. the littlest things will remind her of mac and she’ll start to spiral. two years later and she’s still hung up, but she’ll deny it to the very end.

it’s safe to say that when this happened, daysia crumbled. she realized just how many people she’d lost and how many she had -- and she didn’t have anyone at that point, or so she thought. she continued to isolate and stopped answering her phone, and within the week, her mother was there to drag her home to detroit for detox.

she spent the next few weeks laying in the bathroom, going through withdrawal from alcohol and the various benzos she’d started eating like candy. things were bad. her mother never left her side, and after many na and aa meetings, after snatching pill bottles and miniatures out of her room for months, daysia cleaned up her act. she put on a healthy amount of weight, started working out, went to aa or na two or three times a day until she was comfortable enough to skirt by a day or two without one. she finished up her degree that summer and started waiting tables. she saved up every cent, finally having enough money and credit built up to buy a house where she really wanted to be: peach hollow.

after talking to her old boss, they agreed to take her back on as a crisis counselor when she moved back

so the newly clean and sober (aside from weed lol) daysia is living in a house on blueberry boulevard with @dawsonsawyer

as for her personality and relationships, daysia excels. she is nurturing, so when a friend, or even a stranger is hurting, she tends to go to their side and comfort them. as long as she can make them laugh, then everything will be okay. she makes friends pretty easily, and keeps them for the most part. she is fiercely loyal and will absolutely scrap to defend her loved ones.

she loves love. there is no gender she isn’t curious about and absolutely loves romance, though she also tries to hide that. her walls are ten feet tall. she’s in to hook ups, flings, and polyamory. she’s very open in that sense!!

FUN FACTS

she has an english bull dog named frank!! he is her pride and joy. she dresses him up in outfits, has regular photo shoots with him and loves going to the dog park. he isn’t legally an emotional support animal, but that’s definitely what he is to her. if he doesn’t like you, she won’t either tbh

she has this lil purple pen looking thing that is always on her. it’s her weed vape and she will hit it anywhere. her dumb head is always in the mfing clouds

she has a spotify family plan that is currently only her, mac, and dom and she will absolutely invite anyone she meets bc spotify premium is something everyone should enjoy

wears a lot of graphic tees and jeans, kinda a tom boy. doesn’t love dressing up but will occasionally. also doesn’t rly like make up but DOES know how to beat her face

1000% unable to be alone for like any period of time?? like if she gets off work and no one is in her apartment she just leaves. she goes next door to mac, goes to the peach pit, anywhere she can socialize. being left to her own thoughts will always turn out poorly.

really loves poetry. cannot write it to save her life, but loves going to slam readings or checking out poetry books from the library. her adhd brain can’t handle novels – poetry is just the right length to keep her attention and dig into her soul.

oh yeah, she’s got some pretty intense untreated adhd lol

OK SO WANTED CONNECTIONS IF UR STILL HERE LMAO

ex-roommate: something happened between daysia and this person, whether it was a relationship gone wrong, a friendship with tension, or just the other person being a damn slob – and daysia removed them from the house and moved someone new in. they are probably on shitty terms.

current flings: a few people are probably on her list of suitors right now. people she spends time with romantically, but hasn’t committed to. she absolutely cannot be alone, at any point… ever! so, she has someone with her at all times. m/f/nb, all good.

party friends: this one is pretty self explanatory!! these are friends that daysia may or may not talk to outside of a party, but will always cling to at one.

close friends: she lets very few people all the way in, but those that make it are generally taken care of by day. she makes sure that they are as comfortable with life as possible and spends a lot of time with them

exes: as daysia is a ticking time bomb, there have been many people she’s blown off. whether they once hooked up, were together, or what have you, daysia has a lot of exes. she never means to hurt anyone. it just sort of happens and she has accepted it.

ok so wow. this is really amazing. maybe im being extra-complementary cause i just finished SOJ but... wow. everything from the soft colours and gorgeous lighting to the excellent cinematography to the fluid, interesting character sprites, to the pretty orchestral remixes to the fun and engaging writing, to the spectacular cutscenes... its all just so excellent it feels like a friggin gale of fresh air compared to SOJ

and this game came out in 2012. thats four years before SOJ, and just one before DD, and yet the difference is staggering. i don’t know if its a budget thing, or if its the director’s fault, but theres just something about the animation and camera angles thats so much better. everything is so smooth– no character ever jumps from animation to animation– they slide into it naturally

and the slow pan-up on Aldente as she got cornered was pretty good at conveying a real sense of anxiety

plus, the fact that we don’t find out who tried to kill her is genuinely unsettling. PLvAA doesn’t need to be bloody or gorey to convey a sense of uneasiness or fear– just that lingering mystery of a fourth person– and where they disappeared to– is enough to give me the shivers. ...although it is 1 am and I'm prone to being nervey

i have only 2 tiny nitpicks, these being the sequencing of the music (cuts off very abruptly rather than fading away) and the odd way the dialogue halts all over the place for no reason

The Making of The Surge 2: Germany’s Best Action-RPG

Deck13 is one of the most successful developers in Germany. A studio that is not afraid to compete with the big ones. Read all about the development of the latest Deck13 masterpiece.

Action-RPGs are among the most popular, but also the most elaborate games. Whether Mass Effect, The Witcher or the Souls games from From Software, huge teams work for years to inspire as many millions of players as possible with their works.

In this illustrious squad, games “Made in Germany” are in short supply. But there is one studio that has been battling strong international competition for years: Deck13! The Frankfurt based studio was founded in 2001 by Jan Klose together with three former shareholders, who have since left the games industry. In 2009 with Venetica and five years later with Lords of the Fallen Deck13 already delivered solid action RPGs. Still, especially with the “Science-Fiction-Dark-Souls” The Surge 2017 they became the favourite of critics and players alike. The control with a focus on targeting body parts was outstanding and offered many tactical possibilities.

Two and a half years later, the successor The Surge 2 followed with an even bigger, more varied game world and even more deadly boss opponents. The Surge 2 and developer Deck13 were nominated for five awards at Deutscher Entwicklerpreis 2019: Best Game Design, Best Game, Best Graphics, Best Story and Best Studio. In our cover story, we’ll take a detailed look at the development of The Surge 2. The creators talk in detail about level design, AI improvements and much more.

We will start The Making of The Surge 2 with an interview with Jan Klose, Founder and Managing Director at Deck13 Interactive. More to come in the next few days!

Making Games: How did you celebrate the success of The Surge? Jan Klose: The last few months of development felt a bit exhausting, so I think there was a great sense of relief when The Surge was finally out and getting really good reviews. We had a big summer party in the office yard where we celebrated with our families and with friends from all over the industry. It was great to finally see people playing the game, and we constantly watched streamers, commenting on their progress and action. It was great to see that they enjoyed the game so much.

Did your team grow after The Surge was so successful? A bit, but we didn’t want to become too large. We’re around 70 people in our Frankfurt office right now. In fact, there were several new hires but we also tried to stay flexible and a bit familiar. Therefore, instead of employing a much larger workforce, we expanded our outsourcing contacts so that we would have specific people available at the time when we would need them.

You’ll need to carefully study your enemies, rather than blindly rushing and wildly swinging your weapon without focus – even the weakest of enemies can be deadly!

How did you approach the development of The Surge 2? What have you done differently? What things did you keep? First and foremost, we tried to gather as much player feedback as possible. Having so many gamers out there streaming The Surge and talking about it gave us such a wealth of information that it wasn’t quite so easy to find out the most important points. Also, reading feedback is one thing but turning what people don’t like into the right new features is another pair of shoes. Overall though we saw that people wanted more variety, more different features, or to sum it up: More choice. Some parts of The Surge 1 felt just a little limited, for example, the possible paths to move through a level or the options how to defeat a boss. Sometimes there was just that one solution but RPGs live from the variety and player choice. So we decided to offer just that in the next part, which was easier said than done! Regarding level design, people actually enjoyed the layout of The Surge 1, especially the shortcuts leading you back to the Ops rooms, but players also got lost in the larger levels. So we worked a lot on the level structure, offering more pathways through a level and also giving more guidance, both visually and with supporting tools like maps on the walls. Regarding combat, we added way more possibilities to fight, a new blocking mechanism, better-ranged combat options (which also worked in the boss fights this time!) and also more and different equipment. So that players were able to choose their very own playstyle instead of just playing the game the one way the designers intended them to.

Have you achieved all your goals with The Surge 2? I think we achieved a lot, but some things still fell short in our opinion, even if they weren’t all on top of peoples’ list. For example, while people enjoyed more freedom in regards to when to tackle what part of the game and while we offered more characters and side quests, we couldn’t attach players to the background story and main mission the way we intended to. And regarding enemies, we aimed for a larger variety in humanoid foes, but in the end, we weren’t able to offer everything we wanted to. Some just feel a bit too similar for our taste. But all in all I feel that The Surge 2 is a major step up from the first game, and that was quite an achievement for our team.

What problems did you encounter in the process in general, and how did you deal with them? Doing a part 2 game was way harder than we imagined. As a developer you feel like you’re in a comfortable situation because you’ve done it before but that’s also the major problem: While people want the things back they loved in the first game, they also want a totally new and fresh experience in the new game, and that’s something that’s close to impossible to achieve at the same time. What helped a lot was that one of our early premises was to change where the game takes place: Moving from a factory complex to a city gave us an environment that was fresh but could still cater for many of the mechanics from the first part.

More abilities, weapons, implants, and drones give players a vast arsenal to build their character with.

How do you feel about crunchtime? What experiences have you had with crunchtime in recent years? Personally I don’t think that people are very good at accomplishing a great project without a lot of very hard work, no matter the industry, and I also think that it’s happening every time that things are just not finished when they should be and still there’s a deadline that can’t be shifted any further due to outside constraints. So work has to be increased in order to meet the goal. However, this should never be an excuse for bad project planning and for not reducing stressful times as much as possible, as well as not offering ways to make up for it afterwards. We’re always trying to work with safety time buffers and to have a good overview of the project, and project planning is very high on our list. While we can’t always avoid work-intense phases, we always try to do as much as possible in order to provide a healthy and fair work environment. I know that we’re not always achieving this goal, but I think we got a lot better at it over the past few years, and I hope that the compensation we offer feels fair and well balanced.

How did the collaboration with your publisher Focus Home Interactive go? You seem to be quite satisfied with Focus with its predecessor, was that also the case with The Surge 2? Yes, that’s why we’ll also start a new project with them. I’d say that Focus is the best publisher we worked with so far, or maybe just the best fit for our team and how we work. They have a lot of faith in our creative decisions and we take their feedback and criticism very seriously, trying to deliver the best possible game. Also, we think that Focus is doing a tremendous job to build up studios and brands in the “AA” game section, just below the major blockbusters but still with significant budgets and great marketing support.

You use your own engine for The Surge. Nowadays this is rather unusual with Unreal and Unity almost being omnipresent. Are you still satisfied with this decision? Do you plan to license an engine in the future? Having our own engine still has many benefits for us. For example when there’s a platform change (e.g. from a Playstation 4 to a Playstation 5), we don’t need to rely on a third party to have their tech available early; we can go there ourselves. This helped us big time when we moved from PS3 and Xbox 360 to the current generation with the game Lords Of The Fallen. But while this is great and while we can deliver exactly those tools to our team that they need for the current project, we’re at the same time not programming everything ourselves: We do use several middleware components in order to complete our engine framework.

In our cover story for The Surge (2018), you self-critically admitted that you didn’t always manage to capture the player emotionally with the story in the game. What was your approach to The Surge 2 and how satisfied are you with the result? I’d say that we’re still not where we wanted to be. With The Surge 2 we tried quite a different approach and created a stronger main story with more memorable moments and cinematics during gameplay. But on the other hand, we emphasized the free decision-making for the player, starting with a character creator and a lot of side quests. I think there was the problem: We offered more freedom for the player but then didn’t provide the right focus for all the world background, character building and quest goals to really make the player care for their actions and the NPCs in Jericho City. I think we learned another lesson and I think that we can still be much better and more focused in the way we want to pull the players into the deep lore of the game world and make them care more for their in-game decisions.

The player gets support from a combat drone, which can be equipped with guns, explosives and other deadly technologies.

How satisfied are you with the reviews, the feedback from the community and the sales figures so far? We’re very happy with the reviews and community feedback. We have the feeling that we did somethings right, and overall the reviews are better than The Surge 1, and that’s cool, it really feels like significant progress, and the higher the ratings get, the harder it is to get some better average score. Besides that, we were especially praised by streamers, but of course they weren’t only happy, there was also some well-justified criticism that we’ll address for sure, for example with patches and future updates to the game, in upcoming DLCs… and in the games to come!

How do you generally see the current situation of games funding in Germany? What has improved, what needs to be improved? Well, there’s a bit more seed funding available now on a state level, but that doesn’t always prove effective. Generally not much has improved for higher-budget productions like The Surge 2. And that’s a big problem. When there’s millions to collect in France, in Canada, in the U.S., how are we ever to see big players in Germany? Why are there well-known games brands to be found almost everywhere in Europe but not in Germany? Does Germany want to build up a game development industry at all? I really doubt that, or something would happen. The government funding as high as 50 million Euros per year is okay, but still not a game-changer. It doesn’t look too promising in that respect; studios are generally left alone. It’s no wonder that there aren’t any big German publishers left, and it’s no coincidence that our publisher is from France and not from Germany. Well, at least the money stays in Europe!

also the choreography is really some trite bs. honestly, some effort would have been nice.
