Admirer (Aether Ghoul x g/n reader)
Summary: Knowing you're going through hard times, someone has been leaving gifts on your door at night in an attempt to cheer you up.
Tags: Rated T, reader is gender neutral, fluff, ghouls being some sort of cryptid, ghouls not really knowing how to interact with humans.
Disclaimer: Even if it's not too detailed, this work references struggles with mental illness and disordered eating. Reader has a hard time keeping up with their meals due to depression and/or unspecified eating disorders. If this triggers you, please feel free to skip it.
Tumblr media
The first time it happens, you don’t pay it any mind.
It’s been such a long day, and all your muscles are sore, body and mind tired in a similar manner. Your limbs weigh and ache as you walk towards the bedroom, feet practically dragging over the floor.
Seeing that old, heavy door is a relief. You can’t wait to be in bed, trapped in the warm embrace of blankets and soft sheets. It doesn’t matter if it’s too early in the afternoon or if you haven’t had dinner yet.
Truth be told, lately, it’s been a struggle to keep up with eating all your meals. Most of the time, you’re either too tired, too sad or too stressed out to eat. The dull pain in your stomach has become a constant ache, nothing but a background rumble that sooner or later subsides.
The hunger comes and goes. There are days when you manage to cook for yourself or to snatch some premade meal from the kitchen. Others, you take a few bites of a protein bar or a piece of toast. During some bad moments, you drink water or coffee and just hope for the best, fighting against the knot in your throat and the deep heaviness in your guts.
Today is not necessarily a bad day, neither a good one. It’s… complicated, but food is not cooperating. Even if your stomach hurts and whines, you can’t force yourself to eat anything. The mere idea of getting up, fetching something from the kitchen, biting on it and chewing is draining your already inexistent energy. You’re extremely tired, both body and mind, and nothing seems tasty or easy enough to digest.
Tomorrow you’ll recover, it’s what you utter to yourself before closing your eyes. It’s always that mantra, that little white lie, nothing but a promise you wish to fulfill one day.
The bed is too soft under your body. Muscles aching and mind rumbling, you curl tighter and feel the way your lungs expand in a deep breath.
Tomorrow will be better.
Tomorrow.
A few gentle knocks on the door wake you up. The sky is completely dark, moonlight sweeping from the window through the gaps in the curtain. Blinking off the sleep, you stand up and walk towards the entrance of the room. It’s not too late at night, but most siblings have probably gone to bed already.
There’s no one there when you open the door. Looking both ways on the hallways, darkness and coldness is your only company. When you start to think it was all a product of your imagination, your pupils focus on the floor.
There, right in front of you, is a banana.
A single banana.
That’s… weird.
It is almost impossible someone had accidentally dropped it. Yet, you’re too tired to think about it. The bed is calling you, sharp claws digging in your legs and neck, so you pick it up and close the door.
The second time it happens, it is late at night. You’re exhausted, lids excessively heavy and limbs stiff. Today was a strenuous, bad day. You haven’t eating anything and the idea of having to chew and swallow food sends a wave of nausea through your body.
The only longing in your bones is to bury under the covers and disappear forever, to sleep for months or even years. The knocks on the door barely alert you of someone outside, but your guts are trembling and your back is killing you, so there's nothing to do about it.
Hoping they’ll leave you alone, you lower your head on the pillow and close your eyes.
The next morning, when you get up to begin with your daily chores, your shoes almost step on the gifts. On the floor, there’s a banana again, accompanied with an apple.
Okay.
Now you're pretty sure this is not a weird coincidence or accident. Someone is leaving food at your door, for whatever reason.
Asking around and talking to other siblings brings no answer. As the weeks pass, you keep finding little gifts here and there. Sporadically, you go days without a significant trace of your admirer, but then they reappear.
The gifts change, but there are some constants. Your admirer always leaves food, especially bananas. In some occasions you receive other fruits along with it, or some candy wrapped in colorful paper, or even chocolate bars.
There are other weird instances in which you are gifted the most random stuff you have ever seen. Shiny little trinkets, vegetables, raw pasta, a loaf of bread… It all makes you believe someone must be pranking you.
Still, every morning you expect to find those bizarre gifts at your door. They manage to make you smile even in the most challenging days, provide you a reason to get up and go out.
After weeks of engaging in the same game, you get weary of being in the shadows. Deciding to find out the identity of your admirer, you stay up late until you hear rustling outside the door. Jumping on your feet, your fingers curl around the handle and there you see it.
A banana, next to a carrot and an onion. Then, almost on the other end of the hallway, it's a Ghoul.
Of all things possible, you never thought about this. Ghouls mostly keep to themselves, interacting with other Siblings only during band practice or tour preparations. And yet, there he is, sleeves pulled up, shadows obscuring his face. The only thing you can discern is the shining of his mask and the glistening of his long fangs as he stands still, mouth slightly agape.
The ghoul seems stunned, almost like a deer caught in the headlights. Gradually, you take one step in his direction, then another. He doesn't move, doesn't even flinch. In the darkness of the hallway, he looks more like a statue than something alive.
Breathing deep, you gather courage to speak. "Thank you for the gifts," you say, at loss of words. "But I…"
Whatever you wanted to express dies in your throat as he gradually tilts his head to the side, either confused or amused. As human as he might look, there's also some sort of uncanny valley feeling to him, something that keeps you on your toes.
When the Ghoul begins to walk away, you chase after him. Stopping at a reasonable distance, your mouth opens again. "I don't understand why."
For a long moment, he stays silent. You begin to think he's not going to reply, but he does. "It's bothersome," he says, head leaning in your direction. "The rumble. All the time. It's so bothersome."
His dark, long fingernail points to your stomach. Absentmindedly, your hands curl on your abdomen and you press on it, feeling that ache you're already too used to. Swallowing doesn't loosen the knot in your throat.
"Humans need food, right? There you have it. Food."
"I…"
A part of you knows it's useless to argue. Even if you can't examine his facial expression, you feel the genuine confusion and almost innocence behind his actions. He's right. Eating will kill the rumble in your guts. Eating is a human thing do. There's no sense in arguing, or in trying to explain all the complex reasons behind your struggles.
"Thank you," you repeat.
The ghoul's boots resonate on the floor when he walks, until he's practically in front of you. He nods, fangs shining in the faint light that comes from the windows when he offers a smile. It looks… wrong, foreign on his face, as if he was only mimicking the gesture.
Ghouls are definitely odd creatures. As you see him walking away, a warm feeling grows on your body and travels down your back. Picking up the banana, you peel it before taking a bite of it.
Next time, you'll leave something for him too. Now, you have to discover what an inhuman creature like him could possible want.
PD 1: Not pictured-> Dew in the hallway, violently forcing gently encouraging Aether to leave the gifts in front of Reader's door.
PD 2: Aether brings me so much comfort. Every time I see a pic of him with a banana, my heart melts. (and those arms?! perfect for hugs imo)
Also, I'm sorry to hear some of you are also going through a hard time. I know it can be incredibly difficult to maintain healthy eating habits when everything seems to be shit, but please remember you deserve to eat, just like you deserve to recover from whatever ails you.
I hope this gave you some comfort, just like it did to me.
