Unpopular opinion, but I am disappointed they made Ren and Nora a romantic couple. They could have been a great male/female friendship without all the romantic stuff.
I think as long as their romance serves some sort of purpose that helps contribute to the story, I don't mind. I see them both platonically and romantically, and as long as they can justify one or the other in the context of the plot I'll be happy.
For example I've seen people speculating that Ren is going to blame himself for not stopping the attack because he was too distracted kissing Nora to sense Tyrian's presence, and I like that. If it causes strife in the main group and sets something in motion, then I'm okay with it.
But while we're talking about Renora, I'm supremely dissatisfied with all of the leadup to that kiss. Ren being suddenly emo and distant from Nora came out of nowhere and they basically excused their lack of giving us context with Ren saying "I'm not that great at talking." But like...they could have shown us, then. If the character is canonically unable to be forthcoming then they need to show us what's going on in his head, and what drove him to start pushing himself so hard and start giving Nora the cold shoulder. I applaud Nora for being consistently emotionally intelligent throughout the whole series, but the fact that when she asked Ren what was going on, the audience was as in the dark as her about it? There was no good reason for that. I'm not happy with it.

Wait... Field Museum as in the same one the Brain Scoop (on youtube) is produced out of?
Yup!
I’m not the biggest fan of the Brain Scoop, unfortunately. It’s NOT Emily Grasilie’s fault, her program is fantastic and I’m sure she’s a wonderful, wonderful person- but it couldn’t have come into the museum at a worse possible time. When the Brain Scoop moved to the Field, there was a lot of financial woe going on due to some bad borrowing in the 90s, and the answer to this was that scientific staff was getting cut left and right. The anthropology department was absolutely gutted- curators were let go, positions were eliminated, and collections managers were given more work and much less assistance to do it with. This happened all over the museum- SO much research was interrupted, underfunded, or just... stopped entirely. My boss- and MY job, although I was already in grad school by that time- were two of the casualties. So were many post-docs, internships (paid AND unpaid), and grad student positions. I’m lucky (and also incredibly stubborn) and was able to continue research there- but not everyone was.
But outside of the institution, people didn’t know and didn’t care that the actual research program was being decimated because the Brain Scoop came in, and the Field made a HUGE deal of playing that up. It came in at a time where pop science was really getting popular- and that’s fine and great, and it’s wonderful that people are exposed to science in ways they can connect to! But it came at the expense of our scientific program- and while it’s definitely recovering, I can’t bring myself to like the Brain Scoop. So... yeah, I don’t really talk about it here. :D

Studio V: A reflection on Orbital Drift
We’ve come a long way since the beginning of the semester, though in truth the project began to take shape some time before then. Now we call ourselves Aeonyx, but back then we were just an idea: Myself, Aldo, Ryan, Sujay, Thomas, Caro and possibly Fritz working together on some kind of VR project in Unreal. We eventually got to the semester, lost one Sujay and gained one Joachim, and spent the next couple of weeks mulling over what to do with ourselves. We eventually came to the idea of a VR Sci-fi starfighter game - reasonably easy to make, fun to play and easy to understand - or so we thought.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In the group I must be quite honest, I had it pretty much the easiest - I was the Art guy, making concept artwork and textures for the models Ryan made. The thing is, Art doesn’t just stop working at the last minute like the programming side of things. I cannot give Thomas enough credit, as he truly was the powerhouse of the group, and without his stoic effort there would be no Orbital Drift. He soldiered on amidst bits of code deleting themselves in the last minute, Unreal refusing to compile, crashes at unfortunate times. I think he more than anyone has earned more than a pat on the back and a good night’s sleep. That’s not to say that the rest of the team didn’t contribute, because it really was a group effort. Thanks guys!
As for my own role, it went hand in hand with Ryan and Aldo’s contributions. Ryan worked hard to turn two dimensions into three from my concept art, while Aldo worked to make both my and Ryan’s work look terrific in Unreal engine through a variety of shaders and effects. I feel like I have overall improved in my ability to create textures and create concept art that can be translated into 3D models. My workflow and work ethic were clear weaknesses in previous semesters, but with more of a focus this time around I’m actually quite happy with what I was able to achieve. Orbital Drift is no magnum opus on my part, but nonetheless I’ve improved in my existing abilities along the way. I’ve also learned new techniques, such as creating fonts for an alien alphabet to add that extra layer of detail to everything. This also let me churn out logos and advertisements in order to fill up the level and add some visual storytelling to the mix - our theme was Gladiatorial Starfighter battles with ever present corporate sponsorship, and I think I was able to portray that pretty well with the logo plastered spaceships and beaten industrial scenery.
It’s clear that I still have a lot to learn - I certainly think that learning to model in 3D would be helpful for my workflow - but I’m pleased overall. I’m looking forward to next semester, whatever it might bring.
See you, space cowboy...
