CSM and how the lies destroyed the Mulder family: a headcanon

I have a complicated and maybe personal image of CSM that to me makes more sense than whatever they tried to do with his character (since they changed minds so many times).

The focal points of his character are his envy, obsession with control and inability to love.

I think he really envied what Mulder Sr. had with his family, even before Fox and Samantha were born. He had a wife who loved him and above all he did his same job (more or less) but that hadn't turned him evil or selfless. I like to think of William Mulder Sr. as a decent and kind person, at least when he was younger.

Obviously, his life wasn't perfect and he and Teena probably fought a lot because of the secrecy of his work. I think that was the real first struggle about the truth that the Mulder family had (1°). Bill couldn't be honest with his wife about what he was doing and that created a distance. CSM may have taken advantage of this situation, growing closer to Teena maybe while Bill wasn't there for her.

Deep down in the headcanon tunnel from now on, I like to think Teena and CSM didn't have an affair but just a one night thing. Teena probably never forgave herself for that night and never told Bill about it (2°). Bill never asked, but understood what happened (3°).

At this point, CSM wants to have a relationship with her, but she refuses him and just wants to forget what happened. He's insistent and she starts hating him.

Soon after, Teena and Bill's relationship gets better and Fox comes into this world. Now. I'm not sure what to believe (pun intended) on CSM's being his father. Because, in this logic, he could but so could Bill. Surely CSM thought to be Fox's father and thought to have rights on him, no matter what Teena could say about it.

CSM marries Cassandra, they have Jeffrey, he tries to have what Mulder Sr. has but doesn't work. He can't love. His wife starts hating him, his son is a delusion for him. In the meanwhile, Samantha Mulder is born.

When the time of the abductions is closer, Bill and Teena get to choose which one of their children to "sacrifice" (4°). They painfully indicate Fox, because he's older and stronger, but CSM don't even give them the luxury of the choice. Fox is his son, so Samantha will go. That's the moment where the Mulder family irremediably shutters. Teena divorces Bill and Fox will never know anything about this from his family (5°).

Maybe after the abductees' return, CSM goes to Teena, offering her a possible life with him (this could be why he took Samantha and she wasn't returned). She doesn't believe him and swears to never talk to him again.

Samantha starts living with CSM, he has now what Mulder Sr. had, but again, he can't love. She understands that he constantly lies to her and hates him, so she quickly becames useless to him and he uses her for experiments.

His fixation on the Mulders keeps going, because he thinks Fox is his son, but above all because he likes him as a person. He challenges him, has a goal, a conviction, doesn't care what the others think about him. Maybe he thinks they are similar and that's why he sometimes protects him. But again, he doesn't know what love is, so if there's something more important, he's ready to sacrifice him.

He thinks he knows Mulder and tries to get him on his side more than once, but he fails. Mulder was loved and is loved, he knows what love means, he's kind and decent, even more than his father William.

He thinks he knows Scully because of his own past, but he understands nothing about her or their relationship, because it's the complete opposite of what he's ever experienced. ("You'd die for Mulder but you won't allow yourself to love him" he says to Scully in En Ami, while they're already in a relationship.) And he lies, lies, lies, the thing that made him advance in his life. At the cost of love.

What could really have saved the Mulder family, was the truth, that will become Fox's reason of life. If Teena told Bill about her moment of weekness, if he ever asked her instead of acting like nothing ever happened, there could have been hope. Hope to forgive, to go on. But what they did was the opposite, letting Fox enter in these net of lies. Hiding everything from him "for his own good". But that's not what he wanted and accepted ("The truth will save you, Scully. I think it'll save both of us").

Allah mentions the story of Prophet Adam ‘alayhis-salaam and Iblis in several places in the Qur’an. They both fell due to their mistakes; the fall of one of them was temporary, but the other fell to a much different and greater degree, and continues to fall until the end of time. From this, we learn two reasons on how a person can turn away from guidance: Desire, and Kibr (Arrogance).

In the case of the temporary slip of Prophet Adam, it was due to his simple desire. If we let our desires get the best of us, for example if we put dunya as our main focus in life, we will miss out on Allah’s guidance.

But in the case of Iblis, it was his kibr. And when a person suffers the disease of kibr, he will find it much harder to return and repent to Allah. For Iblis, it was his destructive characteristic of arrogance that has caused him to permanently turn away from guidance.

⭐(Re)Visit a Classic XF Fic [3/?]⭐

Here's your 3rd classic fic to celebrate The X Files turning the big 3-0 and the fanfic writers that paved the way (for xf fanfic and online fanfic culture in general). Like yesterday's installment, this one is all about the URST (insert Adam Scott meme here). There are sequels by the same author in which you can get your consummation; X Libris has helpfully compiled them here, along with the original artwork. But personally, I like this first part best. I like some internal emotional struggle, some unresolved (yet clearly reciprocal) pining, some tentative steps towards intimacy.

Pro-tip from a fanfic elder to newbie writers: to create URST, have your characters express only part of what they are thinking/feeling. That's where the tension is: between what is thought/felt/recognised/acknowledged and what is actually said or acted upon. Whatever you want them to say, cut it in half, and then in half again. This is something I realised I was doing in my writing, partially because it's more realistic re: how people actually relate with loved ones. But also, I was probably influenced by the authors and fics like this that gave me that first exciting experience of fanfic. Notice just how deftly this author depicts Mulder's feelings for Scully but only allows him to express, in words and actions, a teeeeeeny fraction of what he reveals to the reader. I fucking live for that shit. Enjoy!

This is part of an episodic series called A Second Chance. All the episodes are collected, in order, using AO3’s series feature. The concept of the series is to rewrite seasons 8 and 9. It deals with Mulder’s return from the dead, the birth of William, and Mulder and Scully trying to juggle family life with impending doom.

If you don’t want to read the whole thing, but want to read this story, here is what you need to know…

Previously on A Second Chance: After Mulder returned from the dead, he moved in with Scully. Reyes has been partnered with Doggett since This Is Not Happening (Reentry). Scully, while pregnant, was infected with the black oil and somehow neutralized it (Immunidad). The Cigarette Smoking Man (and a new syndicate) learned of this, and became interested in Scully’s baby. After William was born, Mulder and Scully were determined to keep him safe (Sinister). However, after they learned that not only can William neutralize the black oil if infected, but he was also immune to the Super Soldier virus, Mulder planned to go on the run with William, leaving Scully behind due to the chip in her neck (and therefore her ability to be tracked). However, the Smoking Man got to them first. (In the Space of a Day)

While I don’t normally suggest that you read the other stories, this one could be considered a two parter with In the Space of a Day. However, I don’t think one would be totally lost if they just read the recap above.

“So, what do we know?”

Skinner looked around his office at the ragtag assembly. The Lone Gunmen were milling about while Doggett and Reyes sat in the chairs on the other side of his desk.

The chairs Mulder and Scully had sat in so often.

This morning Margret Scully had called him, her voice tinged with panic, telling him that Mulder and Scully were gone. He’d gone over to the apartment with Doggett and Reyes immediately. While he’d put on a strong face for Mrs. Scully, Skinner was worried about what they’d found. Missing luggage and clothes. Photos removed from the mantel. All the things they needed for the baby were gone. Scully’s car was missing. Their wallets were absent us but the house keys remained.

It didn’t make any damn sense. While he didn’t tell this to Mrs. Scully, Skinner knew that Mulder and Scully had gone home last night to pack. They’d all agreed that William was in too much danger, since not only could he neutralize the black oil, he was also immune to the Soldier Virus. And since Scully could be tracked by the chip in her neck, the only option was for Mulder to take the baby and run.

Skinner had watched them make that decision. He knew it had broken both of them. But he knew they had no other choice.

So what had happened?

“We don’t know much,” Doggett replied to Skinner’s question. “We’ve combed the apartment, and other than it looking like they packed their bags and left, nothing was out of place. Except this.”

He tossed an evidence bag to Skinner. It contained a cigarette butt.

“We found it in the fireplace,” Reyes said.

Doggett added, “And seeing as neither Mulder or Scully smoke…”

“That smoking son of a bitch was there,” Frohike said, walking over to grab the evidence bag. “He must have taken them.”

Byers spoke up. “But why is Scully’s car gone? That would indicate they ran.”

“But why?” Skinner asked. “They were supposed to wait for you three to make new identities for Mulder and William. Why would they have run without them? And why did Scully go too? She was adamant about not going last night.”

“Maybe she did cut the chip out of her neck,” Langly offered.

Skinner didn’t like to think about the repercussions of that.

“Maybe they were spooked,” Reyes said. “Maybe they saw the Smoking man coming, and ran. Maybe he was in the apartment after they left.”

“No, he took them,” Frohike cut in. “That rat bastard took them.”

“You think he’d let them calmly pack their bags? That they wouldn’t have fought?” Dogget asked.

They were all quiet for a moment. None of this was adding up for Skinner. It seemed equally plausible that Mulder and Scully had run as it did that the smoking man was involved. He pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Alright, let’s keep looking. I’m hesitant to file a missing persons case until we know that Mulder and Scully didn’t willingly go. Doggett, Reyes, look into any security footage you can find.” He turned to The Gunmen. “You three see if they left an electronic trail.”

Skinner watched as everyone filed out of his office.

Scully stood in her bedroom, staring at the suitcase on the bed. How do you pack up your life? She didn’t know where she was going or when she would be back. Should she pack only summer clothes or winter as well? Would she be able to fit into her pre-pregnancy pants by winter? She was frozen, overcome by indecision.

“Are we really going to do this?” Mulder asked in a quiet voice, rocking William as he paced around the room. “Go willingly with him?”

“What choice do we have?”

“We could fight. We could run.”

Scully shook her head. Even if Spender’s men hadn’t confiscated all their weapons, what were they going to do? Come out, guns blazing, with William strapped to Mulder’s chest? “How?” she asked. “We have no weapons, and we’re on the third floor. We can’t exactly leap out the window.”

Mulder continued his relentless pacing. “We can’t let this happen. We can’t let them take him. Run tests on him…”

Scully stopped her packing and walked over to Mulder, stopping him mid pace. Less than twenty minutes ago she’d been preparing to say goodbye to both of them – readying herself for a future where she may never see her baby or partner again. But now… maybe this could work. Maybe they could stay together, make the vaccine, and get out. Maybe it would be ok.

Or maybe Spender would turn another child of hers into an experiment. Scully pushed the thought of Emily out of her mind. She couldn’t save her first child, but maybe she could save William. “We’ll be with him. We can protect him. We can do this. Together.”

“Together,” Mulder echoed.

“Hey, hurry it up.” One of Spender’s men had appeared in the doorway. Scully glared at him, but went back to packing. Mulder continued to pace.

Turning to the closet, Scully got a larger suitcase out, tossing her normal small traveling bag to the ground. She grabbed a range of clothes: sweatpants and shirts, jeans, sweaters, blouses. She wondered if she should throw in a suit or two, but decided against it. Going through her drawers she questioned if she should pack her old bras or not. She decided on just her favorites, on the slim chance they would fit after she was done breastfeeding.

Done breastfeeding. That wouldn’t be for at least six months, according to her plan. Would her mom really miss that much of William’s life? Or maybe much, much more. Who knew how long it would take to make this vaccine.

That thought spurred her over to the bookshelf, where she kept her photo albums. She pulled them out and threw them in the suitcase. “Where are your family albums?” she asked Mulder.

“In the closet. Up top.”

Scully went to Mulder and took William. “Grab them.”

Mulder looked at her, confused, but did as she asked. Once he had William back, Scully went to her underwear drawer, looking for panties. As she searched, she came across a négligée that she’d only worn for Mulder once, as well as her vibrator. Should she bring these? How weird was it to be thinking of your sex life as you were effectively being kidnapped?

She slammed the drawer shut, leaving the items behind.

She headed for the bathroom to gather her toiletries. She was packing her postpartum pads when a voice came from behind, making her jump. “You only need to pack your personal items,” Spender said. “These… toiletries,” he gestured to the pads she was holding, “can be obtained for you.”

“How kind,” Scully scoffed before jamming the pads, along with her peri bottle into the bag.

“You’ll have the finest postnatal care. There’s nothing to be concerned about.”

Scully paused her packing, and turned to face the bastard. “Nothing to be concerned about. Really? So, you’re not kidnapping us in order to use our son as a vaccine against alien colonization? Because that sure seems like something to be concerned about.”

Her voice must have carried, because Mulder appeared in the doorway. He was now wearing William. “Hey, leave her alone.” he said to Spender.

“I’m merely trying to be of assistance.”

Scully let out a wry laugh and pushed past Spender. She stopped in the living room to grab some framed family photos, as well as the copy of Moby Dick her father had given her.

In the kitchen, Scully started collecting the breast pump. Mulder had followed her, and took the pump out of her hands. “I’ll get this. You finish packing your clothes.”

She nodded and went back to the bedroom. Looking around, she couldn’t think of anything else to bring. There it was, her life all packed away into a medium sized suitcase. Any further time spent packing would be delaying the inevitable.

Scully zipped the bag and dragged it into the living room.
