For the kiss writing meme... KuroFai and #40?
…because the world is ending.
If Kurogane ever had to paint a picture of the apocalypse he never would have been able to imagine something so horrific as this - water in abundance that ate away at stone, steel, and flesh while potable water was jealously guarded and rationed; bodies left to decay in piles as a warning to others that might dare trespass; people starved and broken, clinging to any hope that there might be some salvation. And yet, all of it pales in comparison to his own personal armaggedon playing out right before his eyes.
They are all broken, if not in body then certainly in spirit. Syaoran was taken from them, exchanged for another one only freshly freed from the prison of the bastard who has caused them all such pain. Tears fall from Sakura’s eyes even as she sleeps, heartbroken. Kurogane is covered in his blood and Fai's, clutching tightly (but not too tightly, he is hyper aware of how fragile the body in his arms feels and will not allow himself to cause an ounce more damage to it) to his unconscious form. He listens intently to each shallow breath, measuring them against one another to see if Fai is fading.
He thinks his heart hurts worse than the burns on his back at the moment.
They follow the small crowd of witnesses, the last people of a dying world, and the two reunited vampires away from the now empty reservoir and Kurogane tries not to think about how long these people have before they all die.
The medicine here is low, and the knowledge possibly even lower. Fear begins to creep up from deep within Kurogane’s gut, and it is a losing battle to force it back down. It burns his throat and threatens to falter his footsteps.
Sakura is physically unharmed. This new Syaoran will need some tending, but he seems as strong-willed and determined as the other, so Kurogane knows he will be fine. Kurogane is in pain, but he will live. Fai... Fai he is not so sure about.
There is so much left unsaid between them, and their last conversation - an argument of all things! - replays itself again and again in his mind.
Without thinking, thankful he is the last of the group climbing the stairs, he presses a barely there kiss to Fai’s unbloodied temple, and wordlessly promises to keep him alive, no matter the cost.

During your first read through of Acid Tokyo, I think you (or someone else commenting) may have already noted this, but it's just too cool to not point out again. Your thoughts on Tsubasa Kamui are so spot on, and it's even more fascinating thinking of his X counterpart comparison. I think of Tsubasa Kamui (and potentially all of Acid Tokyo) as the direct consequences of if Kamui had chosen Earth in X, hence why he's even teamed up with the Dragons of Earth here. I know you hate Fuuma, but it's kinda cool how Acid Tokyo also illustrates how he might have turned out if he'd been forced into the Heaven role instead of all that terribleness he does in X. Still with a bit of that creepy personality, but a lot more benign than his X counterpart. Seeing the state of the world in Acid Tokyo almost like an alternate timeline of X is pretty interesting to me! Random tangent over!
A+ tangent! Oh, it's so fun to compare the two plotlines. I really adore the comparison you make here - Kamui and Fuuma swapping places has such a fascinating impact on their situations and the people around them. Like you said, Fuuma is a lot more sympathetic, and I think it really helps to have him fighting to save people's lives rather than the opposite. Not only that, but Kamui ends up with opposite characterisation too! Rather than growing into someone who cares about the people around him and trying to save the world, the Kamui we meet in Acid Tokyo is so deeply focused on his own agenda that he doesn't care at all for anything - and ends dooming all the survivors because of it. Without Sakura's intervention, Kamui's selfishness would have killed everyone left.
I also like how the Dragons of Earth get this treatment too. Even though they're practical about the details of saving people, they clearly care about the survivors in their camp and Satsuki especially shines through as a much more caring individual. It's so fun that we get to see an alternate way things could have gone. It really shows that CLAMP put a lot of thought into the choices they made in X/1999, even if we never got to see the full scope of it.

thinking about characters who lose an eye and then are given an eye by one of their most important people, inheriting something more than the eye from it, and then one outlives the other. you'd think this wouldn't be many cases and yet,

MOM HOLY FUCK THEY REALLY ARE SAYING IT
EXCUSE ME
EXCUSE ME
WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT IS THIS THE GREATEST THING
LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS
Clamp absolutely set the precedent for this with our visit to Shura/Shara all those years ago. We’ve SEEN the possibility of being in the past and future of the same world and teleporting between the two. We knew the feathers could appear pretty much anywhere in the timeline of a world, given how time works differently across the mutliverse, and we DID just straight up go backwards and forwards in time via Mokona, so it’s absolutely possible for them to appear in the Past of the Kingdom of Clow.
WHICH IS APPARENTLY ACID TOKYO????
WHICH JUST ABSOLUTELY BLOWS MY MIND WHAT THE FUCK
WHAT A WAY TO TIE IT ALL TOGETHER??
X/1999 IS THE SET UP TO THE CLOW KINGDOM?
THE CLOW KINGDOM IS IN THE RUINED ECOLOGICAL DISASTER OF OUR OWN CURRENT WORLD???
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle as a pseudo-not-really-but-kind-of-sequel-event to Cardcaptor Sakura but ACTUALLY ALSO being the sequel-kind-of-but-not-exactly sequel to X/1999???? Or Alternate Timeline X/1999? Where things are ever so slightly different but the world was ruined in the same way?
AND THE RESERVOIR
THE RESERVOIR IN ACID TOKYO IS THE RESERVOIR IN THE CLOW RUINS????
I’m REELING OVER THIS
THEY SET THAT UP
SAKURA WALKED THROUGH THE DESERT TO PURIFY THE WATER TO SAVE THESE PEOPLE AND IT MADE THE RESERVOIR THAT LOVED SAKURA SO MUCH THAT IT PROTECTS HER
AND WATANUKI! WATANUKI WAS AN ESSENTIAL PIECE OF SETTING UP THE RESERVOIR IN A WORLD BEFORE HE EVEN EXISTED IN THAT TIMELINE
And that’s Definitely the feather they’re talking about, isn’t it? The feather that Sakura left in Acid Tokyo is still in the Reservoir right now, and is the reason the water is magic and loves her so much - because it’s a piece of her, and -... well, a piece of her clone. But it’s a piece of SAKURA, and so they resemble and resonate with each other, and that's why the water is so close to her, but 'Sakura' can’t absorb the feather because she’s already a full person and those aren’t her memories, but the memories of her clone.
Meanwhile Sakura (ie, our cloned Sakura) is currently on the other side of the portal at a point in time that DIDN’T exist a few seconds ago, for Original 'Sakura', but the rest of the universe has moved on and decades have passed (even though no time at all has passed for her) and now the feather from her clone has ended up in the past that set up the reservoir potentially centuries before she was even born.
Timeline!
Oh my god?
Oh my god.
I’m going to be thinking about this forever.
No wait I’m not done ACID TOKYO WAS like THE point in the narrative where everything changed forever. And from a Tsubasa point of view it felt like a world picked at random for all the Important Narrative changes to take place - but it never was! It was the most important world of all! It was the Clow Kingdom!
So Syaoran lived his life in the Clow Kingdom, and then his soul collapsed in Acid Tokyo, which was ALSO the Clow Kingdom, and then he went and died defending Lava Lamp, in the Clow Kingdom. All at completely different points in the timeline but all in the exact same world.
Though I will say I am thoroughly baffled by the connection between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and THE CLOW RUINS???
ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO BE THE SAME BUILDING?
Oh my god they’re in the same location aren’t they. The reservoir was underneath it and now it’s under the ruins. I suppose they have Magic so they could probably reshape them however they want but WHAT A CON CLAMP HAVE PULLED ON US
TO SPEND THE ENTIRE MANGA STARING AT THE WINGS OF THE CLOW RUINS AND THEY WERE SECRETLY WAITING FOR THE RIGHT TIME TO TELL US THAT WE WERE ACTUALLY LOOKING AT THE TOKYO METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT BUILDING ALL ALONG
THE AUDACITY OF IT ALL

Do you think the moment C!Syaoran stabbed R!Syaoran's thigh is the precise moment where Kimihiro fell from the window?
I never thought about it, but now that you've mentioned it, yes it's definitely possible.
Tumblr media
Watanuki sort of out of sudden falls out of the window. Nothing pushed him, nor he consciously tried to kill himself. Later on it's revealed that was because of Himawari's curse of bringing bad luck to those around her. So I always attributed window fall that
Ngl, I don't understand a thing about whole clone thing in trc and xxxholic and how they're connected. I understand Watanuki is somehow a clone of one of Syaoran's and that Syaoran and Sakura are his parents (?) but that's all I know. So I Googled the scene and found these two xxxholic pages:

Which basically confirms what you've said: the moment one Syaoran stabbed another, Watanuki unconsciously threw himself from the window

BAD ACID MERCH OF YESTERYEAR -- FAST BECOMING VINTAGE [DOOM] FINDS.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a Bad Acid Records-issued "Taste the Pain" CHURCH OF MISERY band tee, and reportedly a UK thrift find, which isn't surprising at all considering Bad Acid was a Poole, UK-based label, meaning you'd be harder pressed finding stuff like this Stateside.
