OOC: I know in Bravely Second that Kamiizumi straight-up attacks Edea if she sides against his opinion in the Kamiizumi vs. Mephilia sidequest, and...eugh. Looking back on it, I can tell they made Kamiizumi a bit too out of character for that part of the game, purely so we can have a boss battle opportunity.
I mean, if Kamiizumi had found out from Edea that Gho Ghettar was being hazed b/c it’s something the company does to all newbies, I’m pretty sure he would’ve went to beat the crap out of Gho’s employer instead (or at least force said employer to apologize and give Gho proper work to do that Gho was supposed to be hired to do).
...actually, that could lend well into what’s already established in the sidequest lore. After all, before Kamiizumi fights Edea in said sidequest after she sides with Mephilia’s opinion, it’s important to note that Kamiizumi has little idea of Gho being forced to do menial labour that isn’t even in his job description (since he only eavesdropped on the party when Edea was making the decision between whether Gho should stick with his employer or leave and work with Mephilia).
After the battle when Edea beats him, Edea can explain the situation, and then Kamiizumi could be like “wait, they’re doing WHAT and to one of my own pupils!?”
Cue cutscene where Kamiizumi gets mad and personally calls out said employer to be more responsible in guiding their new hire to doing proper work that he was supposed to be doing, instead of the crappy labour that he was being forced to do that wasn’t even in said job description. And even if Gho decides to still quit after and stick with Mephilia, at least they have that issue resolved without Kamiizumi being so out of character.
If the player still decides that Edea decides that Gho should stay with his employer despite what’s going on, we could cut to a cutscene after battling Mephilia where Edea personally calls out the employer on being a terrible employer to Gho and forcing him to do work he wasn’t hired to do, and Kamiizumi just is quietly proud that Edea is sticking up for her fellow pupil of sorts.

Your Father's Daughter

Chapter 4
The streets were as busy and crowded as you remembered. It took you a little over a day to get down there from where your fathers plot of land was. It would have taken you less time if you hadn't traveled on foot, but you didn't want any attention on you. It was easier to slip in and out without a horse to worry about and you could take care of yourself just fine. This wasnt your first time being your fathers eyes and ears in places he couldn't enter without drawing attention to himself.
You decided to become familiar with your surroundings. If the Kamiizumi’s knew of this samurai, that meant one of two things. He was well known, or close by. Rumors and gossip spread like wildfire in cities and towns, passing from peasants, to merchants, to the inns and brothels and finally to the higher ups. If he wasn't in this town, he would be in the next, and if he wasn't in the next, someone would know. Someone always knows. People talk.
Hitching rides behind carriers, slipping into alleyways, walking the streets in plain daylight or even the nights, you became a wanderer. It was easier to blend in a town. Everyone was more focused on themselves to really notice another stranger slipping in and out. You learned to use that to your advantage always.
If the samurai were in this town and traveling, he would eventually grow hungry, tired or in need of entertainment. Every other man you watched flocked to one of these three areas, and at the end of the day no matter what nickname this samurai had, he was just a man after all. You’d find him somewhere. It was then on your journey your mind began to wander, curiosity grabbing hold on this “Onryo”.
What could make a man walk down this path of vengeance? It clearly was as it was targeted to specific people according to the rumor you heard that night. He had already removed one of his targets, and now he was onto the next. He was determined, and skilled, but that was all you could think of to add to his character. Your mind began to wander on other characteristics of his. He couldn't be loud or boastful, his actions do his speaking for him and others echo them like the walls of a cave. No one knew of his name either. You would think that someone who managed to slice through the four fangs would shout it from the mountain tops. Men would be prideful and loud about performing such a task, and yet no words of his had been repeated for you to hear. He was narrow eyed, focused, a predator who slips in and out the bushes, plotting on his next meal who lapped up water from the bank without a thought in its mind. He had a very specific taste, and with that came an unquenchable hunger that came with picky eaters. You refused to let your father become his next meal. Not that he could. Your father was a bigger predator, and more dangerous.
You decided to head in the direction of the town markets. There you were sure to find men and lost children wandering and stealing from the tables and trays. The markets were always busy, and bustling with life each time you visit. It was the closest resemblance you had to your childhood. Remembering days of slipping through the booths and grabbing whatever small item you could find. It was never enough to fill your stomach, but enough to hold you over, and more than what you would receive at home at times. Stealing was a crime that was taken very seriously here as everyone was low on income and were trying to get by with the profits they sold that week. It was punished if caught, so you had been sure to not get caught. You had watched the children who did get caught and decided that that wouldnt be your portion. Their punishments were always brutal. You remember the little boy who had a finger sliced for each piece of meat he had pocketed. Lucky for him, he only had two. You watched another little girl get her face shoved into the drying mud, and kicked to the side. There were no charitable strangers, no kindness. If you didn't learn it from home, you would learn it out here. The world can be a very cold place.
In every town market place there are restaurants. Places for people coming through and visiting to stop and rest before continuing the journey. Every local towns person knew that depending on the upkeep of the place, determined the quality of the food. Who needed clear thoughts when you cooked with heart and soul?  The less organized, the better. You were confident that this man didn't care about sitting in a high-end restaurant where they kiss your knuckles and massage your calves. He must be furtive, quiet. The more mess around him, the easier it was for him to blend in. And who didn't like good food?
As you were wandering, you stumbled across a mother and her child; who you could tell was hers as they shared the same nose. It was rare to see an unattended woman with her child who wasn't selling something. They seemed preoccupied with each other. Her seated on the steps, and her son standing before her. He was mumbling something, using his forearms to rub at his tearful eyes. You couldn't quite catch what he was crying over, but what you could hear was the ooo’s of a comforting mother.  Her touch on his skin soft, her voice calm while the little boy wasn't. He soon lowered his arms, and though you couldn't hear the words being said, you heard the crack in his voice and how unsure he sounded compared to her stable voice. Whether she was feeding him lies you wouldn't know, but judging by her voice  you bet they were sweet. All you knew was that this woman loved this boy. You could see it in her eyes. They held each other close, and she rocked him side to side. Their clothes were torn and looked like they hadn't been cleaned in weeks, and they both looked like they hadn't eaten in that same span of time; and yet they were the richest in this town. The world was cold, but they kept each other warm. You ripped your gaze from their presence.
It wasn’t jealousy. There was no way this feeling that crawled into your skin was that of jealousy. It was heavier. Your father could provide more, and offered you far more. There was nothing you could ask for that he couldn't reach, even though you never asked for much. He wiped your tears, and fed you. He taught you right from wrong, and so much more. More than any girl your age was supposed to learn. More than those two combined had ever learned. While they sat on cold steps in a dirty town with dirty people, you stood in the shadow of the sun, warmed by his light. What you have, they could never have in this lifetime. What they have, you never did either. Her holding him close. Not telling him to be silent, but letting him cry in her arms. You wondered how soft life would have been to have a mother who comforted her child the way this one did. How gentle would her touch be on your skin compared to her slaps and pinches? How would her words swim through your heart and soul instead of sending you into fight or flight? How would you have turned out differently if you entered the world with love? Who would you have turned into if you were loved by the woman who brought you here? You told yourself it was because he was a young male, and sons are more favored in the household. You told yourself that thoughts like these were useless, and wouldn't help you on this mission. You told yourself whatever you could to stop the question peeking its head around the far corner of your mind. A question you hadn't asked yourself in a long time. “Why didn't my mother love me?”
These were not the times for childish questions, you reminded yourself. You had a father, though not related by blood, much closer than your biological mother. You had a purpose, a mission, an association to greatness. You would never have what they had, but you had more than enough. It would have to fill that void. There was no other option.
You couldn't enter the restaurant. Though cloaked, you didn't want any attention being drawn to you. A young woman entering a restaurant unattended, and with money spelled out possible problems that you would rather avoid. You just needed to peek into a few. See if he was in there or if anyone was talking of him. He wasn't in the first, and his presence was not known in the second. The sun was growing tired, and the day was becoming less busy. You knew you would have to find a place to rest soon, as the night grows cold and so do the people who walk amongst it. There weren't many options you could choose from, but you knew wherever it was it had to be up above and easy to escape from. Inn’s get ransacked and robbed quite often as some of them don't mind accepting criminal money. There were always brothels but though they provided secrecy, some would speak on a woman entering one who wasn't working there alone. Escaping one wouldn't be as hard though. It would be warm, and more comfortable, despite the possible sounds of erotic pleasure echoing through the night from the other rooms.
You were beginning to make your decision., walking the line between the chochin lanterns and the dark alleyways. You weren't exactly tired, but you did feel that it would be important for you to rest so that you could have energy to keep searching the next day. On missions like these, excitement would get the best of you keeping you up and late into the nights. You would search and search, forgetting that you were human with needs. One time you went on a bender and searched for a man for days without food or even drinking. By the time you found him, you were too exhausted to think clearly. You still completed your mission. You still found him.
The day people were dispersing, and those who wandered the night began to reveal themselves. The ladies displayed themselves on the side of the buildings they worked in, flashy attention grabbing attires and all their colors to pull in a lucky customer. As you were slipping between the shadows of the night and the burning lights, you heard a small bell. It wasn't unusual to hear strange noises in the night, but this one was odd. It seemed to only ring every few seconds. Every few footsteps. You thought it odd that someone would attach a bell to their foot, but you’ve heard of stranger occurrences. The bell seemed to be growing closer, they were coming up the street you were walking down. There was no harm in looking, so you kept your eyes on the floor, watching the legs that passed you.
“Where to next, Master!” These enthusiastic words came from a very large man. You could tell by the way the bell wrapped around his tree trunk legs, but the ground didn't shake with his footsteps. You realized why the bell was placed on him. For someone as large as him, he walked with the lightness of a child. He spoke like one too. Your eyes lifted from his legs to his torso where you noticed he had rounded nubs where his hands should have been. A disabled man, with footsteps as light as feathers, under the apprenticeship of another man. Your eyes drifted to his master.
His head was lowered, hiding his face under the wide brimmed kasa. His cloak covered his body, swaying around him as he walked through the night crowd. He moved like a shadow. Unnoticed.
You watched the two out of curiosity now. A strange dynamic to witness as only one seemed to be hiding and making himself nearly invisible, the other tagging along while towering over him. The blue cloaked man did not respond to his apprentice, he barely acknowledged his presence. He just swayed through the crowd, the both of you nearing close.
He had tilted his head up to read a sign on the side of a building while his apprentice rambled and
that’s when you saw it. His eyes. You didn't believe it at first, but you trusted your eyesight in the dark. Hidden behind orange glasses, but you could tell they were blue behind those frames by the way the night lamps hit them. Your heart race quickened, and you felt all the thoughts of rest leave your mind as you focused your attention on him. He was no longer a stranger on this busy road, he was now your target. Studying him in this moment, you noticed the bulge of a sheath under his cloak. He was armed with a sword, this had to be him. Your mood darkened and your eyes narrowed as you were aware of what he planned to do with this sword and how you were willing to do anything to make sure he failed.
You watched him enter a building after reading the sign, followed by his large bubble of a companion. They had found a place to rest tonight and now you have too.

Something that I was kind of thinking about was how in the TMNT IDW comics it was said that Leo named his swords Musashi & Kamiizumi after Miyomoto Musashi & Kamiizumi Nobutsuna & something that I was kind of thinking about is if what if all the iterations of Leo actually named their swords & something I was kind of wondering about is what names each iteration of Leo would choose for them.

A Friendly Reunion
@iincantatorum
Summary: Ariel Sukumara reunites with a certain mercenary, who happens to be working for Diaspro now...(takes place during and/or just after our current threads)
Ariel sank into his chair in the office of his manor, a relieved sigh leaving him.
“So, the transition went smoother than I thought...”
He knew that Melodia had its history of offering refuge to others for varying reasons (war, famine, etc.) but wow. Those many years of knowledge really did come in handy for times like this, honestly. He hadn’t expected to have to put it in action in his own lifetime, and he doubted the rulers of the other regions of Melodia expected it either, but here they were now.
There was surplus food thanks to harvests being better than expected this year, so food wasn’t a concern. And they’d prepped plenty of housing in the Darya Region (with some residents even being generous to offer some of the Moorlands residents some space in their own homes) so that hadn’t been an issue either. Sure, seeing how all of this might impact he overall economy might be a thing to look after, but that was more of a long-term analysis than anything. At least the immediate needs had been met so far. Ariel hoped the other regions of Melodia were doing well with that too.
A knock at the door—it was Maria speaking up. “Lord Sukumara? I brought the person assisting with mobilizing the fae from the Moorlands to come see you!”
“Ah, bring him in, please...”
In stepped a very familiar mercenary. Grey eyes, dark hair. The outift was a little different—Ariel had last seen him in a green and pink kimono, but this time he wore a dark blue kimono. It did nothing to hide the usual scent he had either way.
“Nobutsuna?” A smile spread across Ariel’s face as he stood up from his desk, moving around it to approach the other. “It’s been too long. So the rumors are true, I see...”
“It’s good to see you too, Lord Sukumara.” Kamiizumi gave him a soft smile. “It’s nice to be back in Melodia.”
“Please, call me Ariel. We’ve known each other long enough.” A soft chuckle left Ariel at that as he looked Kamiizumi in the eye. “And to be honest, I’ve missed you a bit.”
“Sadly, I can’t be your plus-one for any future social events.” Kamiizumi sighed lightly. “I’m contracted to Lady Diaspro and Prince Maverick, so...”
“At the very least, we’ll see each other around.” Ariel managed. He paused, before asking, “Do they...?”
“Know that we worked together? Yes. I thought it vital to share that information with them.”
He frowned lightly at that statement. “How much do they know, exactly?”
“Er...” Ariel noticed Kamiizumi’s face flush slightly, before he shook his head. “I only gave them a summary. Any...intimate details were left out.”
“Ah. Well, good.” Phew. There was absolutely no need for anyone to speculate about their relationship—personal and professional—and especially not now. “Do you need to head to back to Princess Diaspro any time soon?”
“Well, I should considering that transportation of the fae residents to this region is completed, but...it is getting late and all.” Kamiizumi hesitated, looking him in the eye. “Is it okay if I stay the night here, and I head back to her in the morning? I know I should have asked beforehand—if you don’t have any room prepared, I can easily head to one of the inns and stay there.”
“I can have one prepared for you shortly.” Ariel managed quickly, hesitating before adding, “ And I was thinking that we should discuss...details. “
Kamiizumi raised a brow. “Details?”
“Yes, about...current events. Over dinner, perhaps, if you’d join me.”
Was that a bit too much? Too forward? But then he saw Kamiizumi smile, a low chuckle leaving him.
“I’d be delighted to join you. Dinner it is, then.”

Free Four
Family's always embarrassing, isn't it?
The western door is still closed off, so now to try the central one... Which also leads to a locked door. Oh wait, cutscene. “Hail, nescient children of man.” What. What the hell kind of edgelord have we run into now? The owner of this voice accosts each member of the party in turn, each time describing them in a way that makes clear he knows exactly who they all are. Finally, they show themselves: It’s a bat.
Always with the fucking bats in these games.
Oh wait, is this the vampire? Yeah, it just turned into a guy. “I am done here.” What. He didn’t do anything. Oh wait, everyone’s unconscious. OK, fair enough, he did quite a lot then. Vampire says his interest lies with Edea only, and leaves the others for Alternis, who is here in the same place as Ringabel, so nice to have an answer to that question at least. The vampire also laments the fact that he never got to meet the two newest members of the Council of Six before they died. Well, maybe you should have actually come to one of the meetings at some point.
The scene transitions to Alternis reporting what just happened to the Marshal. When Braev offers words of praise, Alternis is quick to brush them aside, insisting, correctly, that it was all thanks to “him”. Well, quite. Seems like they could’ve saved themselves a lot of hassle by just sending vampire guy to begin with. Alternis also mentions that Edea has been left in her old room, not-so-subtly hinting that maybe her father should go and have a word with her.
On which note, I’m back in control of Edea, in said room, with the rest of the party missing. Now what? Try to leave, presumably. Ah, here’s Braev. All right. Let’s see how this goes. Edea’s first question is naturally about her friends’ fate; they’re in the dungeon. When her father starts talking about the vestal, Edea immediately warns him against harming her, foretelling that her death would mean ruin for the whole world. Braev’s counters that it’s Edea’s actions that have nearly brought the world to ruin. Notably, he does not explain how, beyond a vague assertion that crystalism is a cult and can no longer be trusted with that power. Which may be true, but doesn’t make any kind of case for his way being better, as Edea is quick to point out, laying into her father for all the death and destruction that the Duchy have committed on his orders, before finally asking the most important question of all:
“What is it you’re trying to do?”
Braev’s response is, frustratingly, not an answer to this question, beyond asserting that anyone attempting to awaken the Earth Crystal will die at his hands. Like Kamiizumi before him, he condemns Edea’s lack of understanding, and, like Kamiizumi before him, does not attempt to explain what the thing that she doesn’t understand actually is. Does anyone in this fucking country know how to communicate with each other? He says that she’ll remain locked up until she sees the error of her ways, but doesn’t do the one fucking thing that might cause her to actually do that. Instead, he leaves her to continue believing that she’s in the right, and all but ensuring that she will attempt to break out and do the very thing that he’s trying so desperately to prevent.
Returning to the Council of Six room, he finds the vampire waiting for him. Vampire’s name is Lord DeRosso, and apparently his non-attendance of council meetings has been going on for 15 years. Which might suggest that he’s not wholly on board with the anticrystalism thing. Oh, this is the guy from @splinteredstar‘s avatar. Was wondering when I’d get to him. Anyway, DeRosso was Braev’s predecessor on the Council, and since leaving the post has been mostly hanging around his castle drinking wine. He asks if Braev is content with what he’s accomplished, having overthrown the Orthodoxy and established dominion over the crystals. In contrast to my earlier theorising, it seems he’s very much on board with the anticrystalism thing, praising Braev for acting instead of simply watching from the shadows like he has.
But he also criticises him for acting too quickly, noting that Braev’s urgency might be a result of his mortality, contrasting that with his own long lifespan. Notably, he mentions being 2,400 years old, which I think makes him the same age as the Orthodoxy. Can’t imagine that’s a coincidence. He reiterates his belief that Braev acted too hastily, but before he can expand on that, the action cuts back to Edea, who is making her inevitable escape attempt.
Back to Braev & DeRosso, where Alternis arrives to report that Edea is missing. DeRosso is completely unsurprised, noting how similar she is to her father. He then makes the incredibly welcome observation that Braev ought to try talking this through with Edea while he still can. Well, I’m glad someone said it, although even DeRosso seems to be missing the point a little: He says that the quarrel between Braev & Edea is a proxy for the wider debate over crystalism vs. anticrystalism. This is true, but not specific enough; the key problem they’re having is that Edea wants to do something that she thinks will help everybody and Braev wants to stop her because he thinks it will harm everybody, but refuses to explain why he thinks that. Until he’s prepared to trust his daughter with this information, he is not going to get her to trust him, no matter how long they talk for. DeRosso exhorts Braev to open his heart before it’s too late, but it’s not at all clear if Braev is willing or able to follow that advice.
At this point, we rejoin Edea, who has managed to make it down to the prison level and find a key for her friends’ cell. Of course, that’s no good without finding the cell itself, and it looks like I’m in control for that. Oh, they’re right here. All right then. I thought the Edea solo mission would be a bit longer than this, but apparently not. With the band back together, it’s time to head upstairs and fight our way out.
The next floor up is laid out like a maze, with lots of dead-ends, presumably to make escaping more difficult. Also making escape more difficult is the barrier in front of the next set of stairs. A cutscene reveals that none of the keys Edea picked up fit this lock, which causes her some confusion until an old guy with a staff shows up on the other side of the bars.
Oh, it’s Yulyana. Wow, it’s been so long I’d actually forgotten what he looks like. The party naturally ask why he’s here and his answer, not encouragingly, is that this is where he belongs(!) Turns out, he’s a founding member of the council that preceded the Duchy of Eternia. ...Is that bad? Or does that mean he was part of the previous, pro-crystalism Eternia? Apparently not, since he describes himself as the enemy. But then he says he’s been banished to the Yulyana Woods ever since Braev took over, which would suggest that he’s not in good standing with the current government. But he is still one of the Council of Six, which suggests that he’s a major part of the current government. What?
The party also seem kind of confused by all this, particularly since he’s been helping them to work against Eternia. Agnès asks how he can ally himself with the people who killed Olivia and the other vestals, and his response is that he’s an outsider looking in, which isn’t really an answer. Changing focus slightly, Tiz instead asks what he wants with them right now. He’s here to visit an old friend who recently awoke from a long slumber, (DeRosso presumably?), and since he was in the area anyway, decided to stop in and deliver a warning.
Ringabel takes this to mean that he’s siding with the Duchy, which Yulyana concedes is at least somewhat true, but not entirely; the world is not as clean and simple as that. Malice is not the only source of evil, and good intentions can lead to bad consequences, to say nothing of the fact that a good outcome for one person might be a bad one for someone else. He asks if they intend to continue on their chosen path, and is answered in the affirmative. That done, he blasts away the gate and disappears, allowing the party to proceed upstairs.
I’m not totally sure what the point of that was, aside from letting everyone know that Yulyana is (sort of) on the Eternians’ side. The warning he offered was so vague as to be essentially meaningless. “Your well-meaning actions might have unintended consequences” is certainly true, but it’s been true this whole time. Unless he’s referring to something specific, it seems kind of pointless bringing it up now. And if he is referring to something specific he should fucking say so and be clear about it, or else his warning won’t be worth much.
Heading upstairs, we find ourselves back at ground level, near where this whole detour started. That seems like a good place to stop for the moment.

**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● heh, Casey’s dad had that coming for a long time ● Techno April has entered the chat
Tumblr media
● Casey’s dad is fucking huge ● who pissed in Alopex’s Cheerios? because I’m here for it ● Splinter is down ● Mikey’s helping his father, Raph is helping Leo ● Ol’ Hob is all about the explosives, isn’t he ● Slash looks pretty wicked in the black mask ● 👏👏👏👏👏
Synopsis: Bebop and Rocksteady easily knock aside Master Splinter, Raph, Don and Mikey, trashtalking the whole time. Outside, Casey and his father the Hun talk amidst the chaos. Hun asks Casey to join him in working for Shredder and the Foot Clan. He tells his son that he finally has what it takes to be a decent father. Casey declines his father's offer and hits him in the head with his baseball bat, but Hun is unfazed.
Back inside, Shredder is surprised by the appearance of Bebop and Rocksteady and asks Karai where they came from. She informs him how she selected two suitable candidates from among the Foot Clan's recruits and mutated them into the two powerhouses before them. Bebop and Rocksteady continue beating back Splinter and the three Turtles. Splinter reminds them of the need to get Leo quickly and get out.
Karai yells at Bebop and Rocksteady to quit messing around and finish off the Turtles. Bebop and Rocksteady are sad their fun has to end, but before they can move a wall comes crashing down on them, thanks to April who is using Harold's anti-gravity gauntlet and cloaking device. Donatello tells April they better make the most out of the devices' little remaining battery life.
Onstage, Shredder urges Leo to rise to the occasion and use lethal force to defeat his enemies. Leo is still in a daze, asking where his mother is. Shredder strikes him in an attempt to knock some sense into him. Splinter approaches with Raphael and tells Shredder he will not touch his son again.
Outside, Casey continues trying to bring down his father, to no avail. He breaks his bat against Hun's arm; no effect. Hun picks Casey up by the throat and tells him he's going to make him listen to reason, one way or another, leaving him distracted enough for Angel to strike him in the leg, bringing him down. Hun rises again and pins Angel down. He is about to kill her when Hob shoots the Hun in the shoulder, and Casey bodyslams him. Hun tells Casey to knock it off before he hurts himself, his stitches already ripped. Out of nowhere, Slash picks up Hun and hurls him into a car.
Inside the theatre, Splinter and Shredder fight. Snapping out of his daze but still brainwashed, Leo attempts to protect Shredder but Raphael stops him. Leonardo tells Raphael he will pay for that. Raph tells Leo that acting like a Foot soldier is not his thing and they both know it; Leo tells Raph he knows nothing about him. Raph says he does indeed know a lot about Leo, and cites examples (including: that the only thing Leo likes more than training is getting ready for training; that he named his katanas Musashi and Kamiizumi; that he avoids playing video games with Mikey because he hates being beat). Raph tells Leo that he knows if Leo were himself he would never be able to disarm him (which he proceeds to do), and he knows that he doesn't have to fight him anymore, because they both know Leo doesn't belong with the Foot Clan. What Raph says echoes what Leo heard from their mother in a dream.
Shredder has gained the advantage over Splinter and breaks his leg, crippling him, as he tells him that he will finally have vengeance against Splinter (who in his former life was Hamato Yoshi) for betraying the Foot Clan. Shredder is about to kill Splinter when Alopex attacks him, unable to hide her disgust and anger with him for burning down the forest where her family lived (see the Alopex micro). Karai hits Alopex in the shoulder with an arrow.
Leonardo, finally shaking off the effects of the brainwashing, is surprised to see Raphael and his other brothers alive and well. He is confused about what has happened. The Turtles prepare to flee and begin helping Splinter to safety. Slash bursts in through yet another wall and helps Mikey carry Splinter. They all pile into a truck waiting outside with Hob behind the wheel. Bebop and Rocksteady are hot on their heels, but Hob stops them with a grenade. As the truck speeds off, the Hun, Bebop and Rocksteady look on.
Later on at the Foot Clan headquarters, the head of the Italian mafia is presenting Shredder with a tribute. He apologizes for not being cooperative with the Savate situation but Shredder tells him this arrangement will be mutually beneficial and dismisses him. Shredder calls in Karai; he tells her that she has committed gross insubordination, punishable by death. He asks if she denies it and she does not, saying she accepts her fate, as all her actions were done for the glory of the Foot. He tells her to rise, as she is now his chunin. Shredder explains that brainwashing Leonardo was a psychological move, meant to demonstrate his power over both man and mutant to his foes in the criminal underworld of New York City, as well as to destroy Hamato Yoshi's (Splinter's) family and to test Karai to see if she was truly worthy of being his second-in-command. Shredder tells Karai that he had to know that he could trust her to rule the city while he focused on matters elsewhere. He knows now that he can, because their family bond is stronger than one of mere blood, it is a bond forged by pain, sacrifice, and combat, proving they are destined to rule.
On the outskirts of town, Splinter, the Turtles, April, Casey, Angel, Hob, and Slash regroup, lick their wounds, and plan their next course of action. Since Shredder will likely begin searching for them soon, Splinter, Turtles and Casey plan on going into hiding, and April knows a place they can all go. Casey asks if Angel wants to come, but she says she needs to stay, as her dad needs her help. Splinter attempts to console Leonardo, but Leo resists, still very shaken from his ordeal. Before they leave, Leo gives Slash's mask back to him, as well as the blade gauntlet he got while with the Foot Clan. Hob and Slash watch as the group departs for Northampton.

@pinkpompomsandkatanas cont. chat between Sean & Kamii
"Whoa, whoa! Wait! One question at a time!"
Kamiizumi figured he SHOULD have expected to be bombarded by so many questions by his soon-to-be father-in-law, but STILL. Crystals, this is a lot.
"I-I'm not sure if much will change? I mean, we're already living together, and I haven't talked much to Brent about adopting or the like—though, speaking of which, I should really have my daughter Minette spend more time with Brent..."
Because Kamiizumi's adopted teenage daughter, Minette, had been away at Al-Khampis for studying for so long, she avoided most of the general chaos that happened with everyone. Kamiizumi kept in touch with her to let her know the gist of what happened and who they now knew so it would be easier for her to get to know the others when she came back from her studies, but...still.
"I really hope Minette and Brent get along. I know they've met a few times, but they haven't had the opportunity to get to know each other. And Brent and me marrying each other means that Minette will have a second father in Brent, so I think the two of them earning each other's trust will be vital in the long term."
“No.”
Sean had a lot of questions and maybe it’s his inner interrogator but he wanted all the answers right away. There was a tense but amused look mixed into his eyes as he was excited that the day would come. Finally. The couple has been through so much that they deserve their day of happiness to arrive already, and look how close it is! It’s this week! Clothes have been picked already, the venue ready, and with the number of friends they had and how they miraculously worked together, the wedding was coming along nicely.
“You guys should talk, I mean, I know Brent has no issues on adopting, and I personally love Minette. She’s like a grandchild to me, already. I’m glad she was safe amid the chaos, however. But we got a lot of catching up to do in this holiday get-together post wedding. Now, I have my speech ready for the wedding.”
He then proceeded to take out a sheet of paper that was his final draft of what he would say, then put on his reading glasses. Sean wanted to practice the speech, knowing it might be a spoiler for Kamii but at least Brent would be surprised.
“What do you think, son?”

Making Accquaintances
@ribbedxgloves
Summary: While everyone’s enjoying themselves at Brent and Kamiizumi’s wedding reception, Janne makes a new accquaintance in Cassandra Gladstone.
“Pleasure to make your accquaintance.” Janne stared down at the hand offered at him, and then up at the face of Cassandra Gladstone—technically, previously belonging to Maximillian Valentin, but considernig that Max was dead and Cassandra’s soul was permanently bonded to his body it wasn’t Max’s anymore.
“A pleasure, I guess.” Janne shook his hand stiffly. He hated formal talk. “Let’s just recap what the hell’s been going on while I’ve been out of town—so you’re stuck in Max’s body thanks to Faye screwing around with handling dead people?”
“Essentially, yes.” A huff left Cassandra at that. Janne glanced towards Zoe casually chatting with Jerome across the room, sharing drinks.
“And your former servant and lover, Zoe, was kinda-dating Geist and now they’re exes because she tried killing him on Faye’s behalf?”
The other man squirmed a bit, uncomfortably so where he stood, but he nodded. “Also yes.”
A low whistle left Janne at that, before he finished downing a glass of non-alcoholic champagne. “That’s gotta be awkward.” Wait. Fuck. Could Cassandra read his mind? Didn’t Geist mention something about Cassandra being about to do that?
“Yes, I can read your mind.” Cassandra managed, a low chuckle left him as he leaned back against the wall. “I have to focus on one person at at time though. It’s harder with a crowd of people in the room, so I have to shut them out first. It’s...” He gestured vaguely, his hand still holding a half-finished glass of wine, “Complicated.”
“So do you have both your own powers and Max’s own?”
“Based on what I understand, yes. But mine are more prominent. Easier to handle, since it’s me using them. Using someone else’s abilities even though I inhabit their body is much harder so far, but Lavinia and Felix offered to help me.” A snort left him at that, a shake of the head. “That couple is...they’re not human, and I know that, but they’re at least allies. For now.”
“For now?” Janne raised a brow at that, glanced towards where Lavinia and Felix were—both of them feeding each other pieces of the wedding cake served earlier, smiles on their faces. Arganan was with them, smiling lightly as he drank his own glass of wine. “Do you trust them?”
“To be honest, I have little trust for anyone in this room. I only allied with them last-minute because they spared my and Zoe’s lives purely because we helped them stop Faye -or rather, left Faye’s side.” Cassandra took a sip of wine, swallowing. “Everyone has some deceit in them.”
“Even a baker like Sylvan?” Janne was still surprised Apollymi had a new boyfriend at all, especially someone without magical powers and someone who was so...blatantly nice, for lack of better words.
“Oh, he’s an exception. He’s too nice.” Cassandra finished his glass of wine. “I’m sure he has some darker things deep down, but...that makes him more interesting.” A light smile played on his lips at that. “It helps that he’s very pretty.”
“Good luck getting past his girlfriend.” Janne frowned. “She’s pretty protective of him given that he literally has no magic powers. She could probably throw you out a window ten times without breaking a sweat.”
“Apollymi?” Cassandra scoffed. “She might be a powerful person who’s a ‘human flashlight’ and has super-strength, but she can’t read minds and memories.”
“Whoa whoa whoa. Human flashlight?”
“I read Sylvan’s mind earlier while he was gushing poetic about Apollymi to me.” Cassandra shrugged. “Apparently he thinks that’s cool.”
“Weird. So,” Janne decided it was best to steer the conversation away from all this - “What do you plan to do now? Just...get used to being in this body and stuff?”
“Yes. But...also to survive. Kamiizumi and Brent might be married, but I think we’ll still have some drama to deal with.” Cassandra paused, before looking Janne in the eye. “And what about you?”
Janne frowned. Did the conversation have to turn towards him? “What about me?”
“What’s this in your head about a girlfriend?” Cassandra raised a brow, and a groan left Janne as he shook his head.
“Now’s not the time—”
“Says the same person who willingly engaged in chatting with me about other people’s boyfriends and girlfriends.” A low chuckle left Cassandra. “Is there someone you particularly like, hm? It’s either you tell me or I can read your mind and say it aloud for you.”
“It’s complicated. She’s not...a girlfriend, technically,” Janne scratched the back of his head, a quick sigh leaving him. “Look, I don’t want to introduce her yet. Not until things calm down a little more if I can. We met while I was back in Luxendarc and other places over a few things...and for her sake, I don’t really want to tell anyone yet. At least not until a little later.”
“How considerate.” A smirk still remained on Cassanrda’s face. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone...yet.”

Your Father's Daughter Mizu x Reader
Tumblr media
Word count: 3.1k
Chapter 2.
There were no words left to say for this assignment. You were to be in and out, and if anyone were to interrupt or attempt to stop you you kill them too. A quick disposal of garbage your father did not find fit for his future.
The Kamiizumi’s are a family of wealthy merchants that began offering their financial help to support your fathers cause. They believed in his greatness and wanted to be on the right side of history, which you translated to being “On the safe side”. They were on whichever side that would keep them as one of the richest in the country and currently that was your fathers. They held no true morals and only believed in currency as time and time again it has proven to keep their hinds safe, stomachs gluttonously full, and even the darkest of their desires satisfied. As slimy as slugs on a wet leaf after it rains and with the same backbone as one, the Kamiizumi family were truly distasteful to you. It was an honor that your father sent you to cut off the head of the snake.
Your father taught you that gossiping was a horrible hobby to uphold. A  hobby that should be left to women to carry as wasting time is not a task a man should be performing. And the head of the Kamiizumi family was a horrible gossip. Letting slip your fathers plans and his true allegiance to the young girls that frequented his home. And girls, they speak even if you aren’t listening. After a few sips of warm sake, and some comforting strokes on his pimpled back, he would begin spouting information along with his blank seeds. Red in the face for both stimulating actions.
Yes, your father taught you a lot about this society and the responsibilities of women and men when you would have time for your talks. The importance of a man, and the subservient duty of a woman and what happens if order is not in place.
“Everyone and everything should be in its rightful place, and it is the responsibility of Man to uphold this system.” he would explain. “If God were generous we would live happily, but we have hands and will and hunger. With these tools Man becomes king under the heavens.” he would speak the last part to himself in a low tone before going onto the next topic. “For on this earth, there is no God.”
It isn't like you had forgotten you were a woman, the soft features were present on your face and though you were built petite, you could see the perk of your breasts in certain angles. You would catch yourself in the mirror at times when your mind would curiously wander on the topics of beauty; though these moments were rare. Other young women your age were a bit more developed, more womanly and full. You sometimes wondered what kind of woman you would have grown to become if you weren't so malnourished and underfed as a child. Would you have grown taller, with more slender legs instead of the thin ones you possess? Would you have more curves to your figure for your kimono to hold onto as you wrapped it around your body? Would your lips display as blossom petals on your face when you applied lip paint to bring out more color to your features? All these thoughts you let yourself explore for a brief moment as you prepared yourself for this assignment.
Slipping on the okobo’s you had found, you headed into the night to begin. This wasnt your usual attire, but you were able to slip onto the Kamiizumi property on time without drawing any attention to yourself. In the late nights at the end of certain weeks, the Kamiizumi head of house would throw a small party just for himself and a few friends who shared his tastes. Young women. No not women, girls would be gathered like flowers in a vase to decorate his halls with their youth and essence. Him and his lowly friends would pick their favorites and pluck from them their petals of innocence and virtue. They would do this until they became too old for the weekly visits, or their bellies swole with budding life. Sometimes that wouldn't stop them. Through the halls you could hear the cries of children, and the moans of men. Two sounds that should never cross, you thought to yourself. Men like him were beastly. Barbaric. It was an honor that your father left the final say in your hand. You were glad to be the period to his sentence.
You took to wandering the halls, wondering which room would inhabit your target. You hated listening, but it was important for you to hear if you could recognize his voice through the acts or possibly someone whispering his name to lead you into the right direction. Finally you came across a room with its door shut. You thought to yourself what was the point of a closed door if you could still smell and hear everything going on within its walls.
“And he has eyes that are blue-” you heard one of the men inside the room grunt and then collapse onto the floor.
“Like an Onryo.” You heard him finish in a pant. The thought of this man speaking on your father set a spark of fire that traveled through your skin. The only blue eyed man you knew was your father, his boss, and he dare spoke of him while relieving himself as if he were common gossip at a brothel.
You moved to a far corner so that you could slip deeper into the shadows, but stay hidden from anyone who left the other rooms.
“Its said that he disgraced the once honorable student now Samurai of the Shindo Dojo .” You heard another man speak. “Cut off the top of his chonmage.” The men ooo’d and and spoke amongst eachother. Some laughed, arguing if the samurai deserved it or not.
“I heard he opened the mouth of the beast and tore out the Four Fangs.”
You caught on to what they were speaking about. The Four fangs were an elite group of assassins known across Japan for carrying some of the most lethal exterminations. Whoever it is that they were discussing was not your father as your father and that group have never crossed paths according to his stories. They were speaking of someone else. Someone more dangerous than the Four Fangs. You leaned in to listen.
“I would have paid good money to see that.”
“You fools would believe any lie. Any fool can say they defeated anyone, it doesn't mean they did. Look here, this small rabbit defeated the Four Fangs. Didnt you, sweetheart?” You heard a quick smack of a hand on flesh followed by a child's yelp and a gaggle of laughter. You winced.
“Who is this nameless samurai anyway? Or can we call him a samurai?”
“A crazed murderer is more like it.”
“They say-”
“Who says?”
“Those who get the chance to witness him and live to speak-”
“Oh, God.”
“Anyway, they say he’s on some sort of mission. A friend of a friend-”
“A friend of a friend, he says”
“A friend of a friend has told me that he is hunting down specific people. People that arent of our own. Foreigners.” Silence as the men slowly began to understand what this meant.
“It is said he has already taken down one of them.” There was more silence before someone finally spoke.
“It was about time someone handled this problem.” This was the voice of the Kamiizumi’s family head. You recognized it by the wheeze of his lungs that followed behind every sentence he spoke. This was caused by his years of smoking, it has weakened him as a man.
“I’m simply saying what we all are thinking. We all knew eventually we would have to rid our land of these white men. I will speak my mind, because I am the bravest.” and the dumbest, you thought to yourself.
“If anyone finds this “White man” killer, let me know. I will pay a hefty price to speak to him. Maybe we can be rid of our own..problem.”
A few cleared throats and muffled “Im tired”s “I must rest” “Good nights” later and the men, and girls, came pouring out of the room, headed in the direction of their guest spaces. Everyone came out, but the Kamiizumi head was the last to poke out. He was just as ugly as you remembered him. His stomach left the door before he did, gray hair trailing from his navel to his exposed pubic region. His face was not a sight for sore eyes as it was heavily aged beyond its years and held craters and moles in different areas. His teeth were yellowed, and you couldn't tell if his hair was shining from grease or hair oil. When you have money, you don’t have to consider others. You can be as ugly as you want, inside and out.
He looked down the left side of the hall, watching his friends slip into their guest rooms. You watched from the right, deep within the corner. He would eventually shift and return back to the room and in doing so he will spot you here. After watching him for weeks, one thing you knew of him was that he couldn't help touching something shiny and brand new. For all he knew, you were a new girl brought to him that he had never experienced before. He would approach you, and beckon you into the room to comfort him into the night. And spot you he did.
“Would you look at that. Were you hiding behind all the other lovely dolls brought in, or saving yourself for last?” He approached you, lowering his stance which made the stench of alcohol and unkempt dental hygiene stronger. You backed away from the scent, but was sure to put on a face of fear. One of the benefits of appearing so young was being able to use it to your advantage. It wasn't the first time you’ve used this tactic. You would feign weak and feeble, younger than your true age. You weren't hideous, and once again if your mother had spent her money on feeding all of you more and giving you the proper nutritional value as a young child you were sure you would have grown into a full and beautiful woman; but now that you're stuck in this slightly smaller than average malnourished body you could take advantage of the people who viewed you as weak and vulnerable. This allowed you at times to exploit them and target their soft spots. Appearing weak and feeble allowed certain people to pull you in. Close enough for you to strike where it hurts. Men like Kamiizumi enjoyed torturing the weak and feeble. Even better, he liked naive. Untainted. Clean.
He was eating the reactions you were feeding him out of the palm of your hands, his hunger striking again. You were sure to lower your face incase he noticed the hatred you held for him through your eyes. This also wouldn't be a good time to be recognized as he was now leading you into the room.
“Lucky you I have energy for one more,” his laugh sounded like mud trying to push its way out of a small hole. “I’ll be sure to be slow with you so we can cuddle all night. The other girls your age like that.”
The minute the door shut, the stench surrounded you, forcing itself down your throat. It was so strong you could taste the room, and looking around you didn't need much of an imagination to know the absurdities that happened in here. It was rancid. Repulsive. Revolting.
You didn't realize he had begun speaking, rambling about whatever nonsense.
“There's something familiar about you, I can't pin it, but I like it..” Your senses were becoming overstimulated, and you needed to focus.
“- and I can show you how a real man breaks in dolls like you. Don’t you worry though.” he began reaching towards you, and all you could see was his grimy sweaty palms and fingers as large as sausages threatening your personal space.
“ I’ll be gentle…”. The buildup of skin under his fingernails. The scent. The sweat.
“...so you can come back.”
His blood was warm before it cooled and dried on your skin, spraying everywhere. This was erotic in its own way, except you got to choose what was being ejected. He reached for his neck quickly, trying to clog the deep slice you left in the deep layers of his skin when he was crawling closer. His usual gurgles were louder now, but he couldn't scream as you were sure to strike his vocal cords as well. The right price for someone who gossips as much as he does, you thought.
“You-..” the realization hit him as he began to recognize who you were far too late. In the corners of the room, behind your fathers coat. He had seen you but as always too late.
He tried to let out some sort of noise to alert the others, but instead let out noises of a dying fish. Skillfully switching the dagger from one position in your hand to the next, you lifted your arms to deliver your fathers final say.
Approaching the entrance of your fathers study, senses of relief began to wash over your being. Home again, after another successfully completed assignment. You were drenched in blood from your hair, to the hems of your kimono. You overheard a conversation taking place behind the doors.
“Sir, I apologize. We didn’t know-”
“I knew.” You recognized your fathers voice, but it didn't sound like your father. There was no warmth, no peace.
“I knew, didn't I?”
“Yes, Sir..” The man sounded petrified, like he was pleading for his life. You approached the door to peek inside.
“And you didn't listen.”
“Yes, Sir-”
“Say it.”
“We didn’t listen..”
“Right.” You heard the hit before you saw it with your eye. The man let out a blood curdling scream before your father hushed him. You might've heard a bone crush beneath the grip your father had on the man, but you weren't sure.
“You're going to fix this.”
“We’re going to fix this..” The man spoke through the pain, blood seeping out between his gritted teeth.
“And next time you’ll listen to me when I say to-”
“And next time we’ll listen to you-”
“Do not interrupt me.” Your father spoke, followed by more crunches and whimpering from the man.
You watched now, this man who you called father, violently lashing out on one of his followers. You had never seen this side of him before. A colder, violent side to him. His usually groomed hair, now letting out a few strands as he overpowered this man. His top coat now removed. Everyone could get angry, but never your father. He was never angry. Never bothered. Never disturbed. He was prepared for everything, anything. It’s one of the things that made him above man, above all.
A few moments passed before he let out a sigh, releasing the man to drop onto the floor hard. He combed his fingers through his blonde hair, fixing it and then adjusting his vest.
“I expect immediate results. Do inform me if anything changes in our favor, friend.” His voice was beginning to sound familiar, lighter, at ease again but not quite there yet. His strides are long, so he leaves the man on the floor to pick himself up and walks towards his desk, reaching  the other side of the room in no time.
The man throws opens the slide door and limps past you so fast  he didn't even see you. You stood there at the entrance of the door, but close to the shadows. If it was your father, he’d know you were there sooner or later. He would feel you. Your father would know. He’d know-
“Come,” the warmth in his voice returned and a wave of emotion washed over you, threatening to overtake you. All of a sudden you were five again, running into the safety of his arms. Approaching the side of his desk quietly, you made sure to ignore the blood on the floor. One of the house maidens would clean it spotless as if it never existed. Until then if your father has decided to not address it, so would you.
One look at you and he clicked his tongue in disappointment. You had forgotten the mess you were in, and even worse you had brought yourself in the presence of your father looking this way. Shame shaded your cheeks before it was met with a damp towel, and the other with the padding of his palms. He held your head still as he wiped away the blood. He knew.
If you were snow, you would melt in the palm of his hands, and if you were a himawari flower you would bloom in his direction. Though you weren't a child any longer, it was moments like this that made every mission, every completed assignment, worth it. Your eyes fluttered in comfort, before finally closing. Yes, this was your father, and that was just a moment that that man definitely deserved. The same way you have earned your fathers softness, and comfort, he has earned his harshness and was punished for whatever mistake he shouldn't have let happen. Simple enough. At the end of the day, it was this man who knew your strengths and weaknesses, it was this man who built you into who you are. It was this man who knew how to soothe your nerves. It was this man who made you great.
“There, now I can see your face.” Your eyelids felt heavy in this moment, but you opened them still to meet his. A door opened in your mind, reminding you of the oceanside he took you to as a child. How he rolled the legs of his pants up so that you both could enjoy the water, your sudden shock of the coldness touching your skin followed by giggles and laughter, how you thought to yourself that his eyes reminded you so much of the sky’s horizon, how they were the same color as-
“The ocean.” The words slipped from your lips in an accidental whisper.
“The ocean?” He repeated smoothly, pausing for the moment.
It was then that you were reminded that his eyes weren't the only ocean blues in Japan, and that these ones were possibly looking for him.
“There is a man looking to kill you.”
Your father smiled and began wiping at your face again, tilting your head with delicacy.
“There are a lot of men looking to kill me.” he said plainly.
“No,” lifting your arm, you rested your hand gently over his and met his eyes with a desperate urgency behind them.
“This one is different.”

Get hold of yourself, Edea! This is nothing like any training with Master Kamiizumi! But still! This darn idiot hits hard! And he says he is women ally, jerk! Though, uh she is kind of grateful he does not treat her like how some people do--a princess. Yeah she is but it does not mean she can’t fight.
Hmph! If he hit hard she will hit harder! Or at least try... He’s good at dodging her attacks more than he let on. Mrgrgrgr!! But this time she needs to win! The last piece of cake is on stake! Aah...that so ever sweet mmmhmmm--urk! Focus, Edea! The fight is not over!
Tumblr media
Her eyes quickly darted to her opponent and as soon she saw him making a move she took her defensive stance to guard from his blow but Edea watched Wylan lower his sword and lean against it like a cane. “Eh?” is this one of his ‘expect the unexpected’ lectures? “What’re you doing?? Come on! Take this seriously--Huh?”
She takes a moment to study his movements and facial expression. If he is lying, he is bound to make a dumb face or at least expose himself. He is not luring her for a final attack, is he not? “ . . . Are you...serious?” as much as she is super duper happy to get the cake, something still smells fishy.
Tumblr media
“But I haven’t won yet! You landed, grr... more hits on me. That’s unfair. I love my cake but I will not take it if I didn’t win it.” clenching her hand, she is really....REALLY holding herself back from dashing to get that cake. Her love for sweet is one thing and her morale compass is another. She’s her Father’s daughter. “Come on, master. You’re setting a bad example for your student here.” a grin tug her lips. “Or you are teaching me with looks I can get anything, hm?” batting her eyelashes for a moment before drawing her sword again. “Engarde!”
@sentofight from here!
Wylan clicks his tongue at her. From his relaxed pose there’s a glint of mischief in his eye once he raises his face to meet her glare. That smirk that spreads across his face is all the answer she needed. Besides, she wanted to make it look like she could go on and do this longer than he could? Please! He wasn’t going to look bad in front of his favorite pupil. Yes, she’s his only pupil. But that’s semantics.
Tumblr media
“Haa.. well how about that. There’s something that matters to you more than the last slice of cake, I never would have guessed, sugarpuff.” Wylan stands back to his full height, plucking his training sword from the ground and flourishing it in a blinding sweep before its poised before him. “If you want to take this to the end, then for the sake of your honor, and that cake, that’s just as far as we’ll go. But just to let you know...” Wylan raises his other hand, a burst of energy as magic coalesces in his palm.
Tumblr media
“Since you declined to take my offering of peace and nod of truce, I have no intentions of holding back. I may just steal the right to that cake back away from you. And if that happens? I best not hear you complain. Prepare yourself!” Wylan draws in air through his nose, suddenly drawing the sword to his side and hand to his chest, as if preparing to bow.
“First Stance: Sylph Knight.” Wind magic carries him forward on bursts of wind, sweeping the swordsman in a dancing step that moves him erratically around his foe before closing in with whirling strikes.

The Show Must Go On
And on.
I can’t find the ninja. I’m sure she’s around somewhere, because there’s a gap in the list of jobs between pirate and swordmaster, where ninja would logically fit, but I can’t find any sign of her sub-scenario anywhere in Eisenberg. So I’m leaving it for the moment, and just playing on in the hopes that she turns up later.
With that in mind, we return to the tavern on Grandship to find... not much actually. I was expecting some big event that kicks off the next part of the story, but nothing like that happened. Instead, it seems as though things are carrying on as normal, with the only difference being that the vague rumours about the ship’s failing stability appear to have intensified a little; it seems that a large number of people are leaving the ship while they still can. Doesn’t seem to be anything we can do about that though.
There is one other bit of news however, which looks to be following up on the cutscene with the sick innkeeper back in Caldisla; it turns out that he’s planning to close the place down now that his health isn’t up to the task of running it anymore. And with nothing else happening in Grandship, that seems like a pretty clear prompt to go and visit him.
At the inn, we’re greeted by a relative of the innkeeper, who informs us that while the innkeeper is indeed too sick to work, it’s not a physical ailment that’s the problem. Going to his bedside, he can be heard talking in his sleep, calling out for Owen. In other words, he’s still depressed about his son’s death. Ringabel checks to see if the journal has anything about this situation, and finds a reference to “bringing the orphan to the inn we started out from”. After some discussion, the party decides that this must mean Egil, and that having him come and stay for a while might lift the old man’s spirits. That seems like kind of a stretch, but on the other hand, it couldn’t hurt, so why not?
In Hartschild, we find that Egil is in favour of this idea; as nice as the commander’s house is and as well as the Goodmans have treated him, he still wants to travel with us. While this isn’t quite the same thing, it does at least start with going on a journey with us. And so, with Eleanor’s blessing, he can come. Of course, there’s still the matter of getting the innkeeper to agree to it, but Tiz seems to think that taking Egil to the king first will help on that front.
At the palace, the king seems to like the idea, and offers Egil the use of his training hall so that he can pursue his soldierly ambitions in addition to helping out at the inn. He also gets put in charge of overseeing Norende’s reconstruction, just in case you’d forgotten that Tiz is also using his presence to help get over a recent bereavement. Returning to the inn, Egil and Karl seem to hit it off pretty quickly, so I guess that’s all going to NEVER MIND THAT, TIME FOR A COUNCIL OF SIX CUTSCENE.
Or rather an “Alternis meets with the Marshal” cutscene. There wasn’t a scene with Ringabel mysteriously wandering off prior to this one, but the first thing the Marshal says confirms that Alternis has just returned from somewhere, so still hinting at the idea that he has been away from Eternia recently. It seems he has come back with an urgent report; the Fire Crystal has been awakened. The Marshal reacts impassively to this news; whether that’s because he already knew or he just doesn’t have anything to say isn’t clear. Alternis also relates that the remaining Black Blades are continuing to fight alongside the Swordbearers, but without any input from Kamiizumi, who seems to have vanished.
Given how disastrously things have gone for them in Eisenberg, the Marshal recommends cutting their losses there and focusing solely on defending the Earth Crystal. Alternis seems dismayed by the idea of abandoning the Black Blades, but the Marshal is adamant; they cannot afford to underestimate Agnès again. With the others now awakened, if the Earth Crystal were to follow, it would mean the end of hope for the world, and their ideals fading to nothingness. He does not elaborate on what that actually means.
Alternis’s response to being told not to underestimate the Wind Vestal is to immediately underestimate her. He reasons that she couldn’t possibly gain access to the Earth Crystal because it would require one of the Duchy’s heavy airships to pass into the Eternian interior. This is barnyard logic; not only is this the exact kind of hubris that got them into this mess in the first place, but it’s particularly dumb, given that Agnès has already stolen one of their airships. The Marshal, at least, seems to understand this, and tells Alternis to summon Victor & Victoria so that the Council of Six can formulate a strategy for stopping the vestal personally. Before he can go any further, however, someone else interjects.
We don’t get to see who that is, however, as the action moves back to the party in Caldisla, with Ringabel present, and apparently having been present the whole time. Which apparently means that he and Alternis aren’t the same person, or at least that the game no longer wishes to drop hints in that direction. But then why do it in the first place if they’re just going to quietly drop the issue at this point?
Clearly, there is meant to be some kind of connection between the two: Not only have there been multiple hints at their being the same person, but the illustrations in D’s Journal seem to show that the narrator of those events was Alternis, or someone wearing his armour, at any rate. But going off these latest cutscenes, it would seem that it isn’t a case of the same guy going back and forth, but rather two distinct individuals who have some kind of connection.
The fact that Alternis was apparently the author of the journal is telling, and based on that, my current theory is that Ringabel is an amnesiac Alternis from the future, while Alternis is a non-amnesiac Alternis from the present. This would explain the game drawing parallels between them without needing anyone to be in two places at once, and also how Ringabel came to have somebody else’s account of future events. It still doesn’t explain how Edea doesn’t recognise him, but it could just be the case that Alternis really hasn’t ever taken off that helmet in her presence. Which would be a bit weird, but not impossible.
Anyway, on the subject of the journal, we’re actually getting fairly close to the end of it, with only a few potential hints left to us. One of these, which Ringabel now highlights, is a vague reference to the Earth Crystal, along with the phrases “Grandship” and “engine room”. It would seem that that’s where we’re wanted next, but before doing that, I want to take another look around Eisenberg, and specifically Hartschild, in order to see if the ninja sub-scenario that I’m convinced must be there somewhere is accessible now that the stuff with Egil is done.
