Thinking about Exandria Unlimited Calamity and the PCs

I think that the best character was Nydas Okiro. Those lines "Are the stars still there?" "We cannot be responsible for what happens" "Material goods mean nothing anymore. Life is what we'll save." And Lou Wilson's own admission "I didn't plan on being this character in this story. I planned to be flippant. But as soon as you put one little prophecy in my face." It says a lot about Nydas that he can't just wave it away. The writer in me wants to explain it as while he's just as arrogant as the rest of them. He was a pirate. And pirates are notoriously superstitious. All the weird stuff happening. Things looking worse and worse and worse. And he just cannot get that prophecy out of his head. He doesn't want to believe it. But he can't put it away. He's the first Arcane User to admit that they were wrong (not in words but in deeds). And I love him. I love him and his dream. His brother. Him and Zerxus. A tough but firm firm firm love between the two of them.

The player who fulfilled the assignment best is absolutely Aabria. Laerryn Coromar Seelie is the single most arrogant, too-smart-to-deal-with-you, closed off, workaholic, shut in of a wizard I've ever seen. And the trick of it all. The white hot truth. Is that it's deserved. Probably the single strongest 14th level wizard in the city. (The septarion are probably "stronger" and have "9th level spells" but she could probably kick their asses too.) She makes it work because she really is that smart. Which beautifully, poetically, thematically, and literally destroys the world as they knew it. Yes yes I could go on ablut the act of love that doomed the world but while that is true and beautiful I would much rather focus on the act of arrogance. Laerryn killed that tree because she didn't know what it did, it was planted by druids, and because it was draining her cities power. All incredibly foolish reasons. It's fair to say that she thought that because it was unknown to her it couldn't be important, because the druids planted it it couldn't be important, because it was draining so much of her precious energy that she needed to finish her life's work it couldn't be important. And she was wrong. Aabrias face when Brennan tells them exactly what the tree is for is utter despair. And honestly it looks like Aabria kinda convinced herself that that tree was evil (props on the acting if that was all for us though). This is all to the point that I love Laerryn. She's great. She definitely pissed me off the most as the character who shrugged off or explained away the apocalypse as hokum until it quite literally blew up in her face. But that's what that character is for. And the fourth episode gave us her utter and true redemption. To completely upend her life's work and to change it's trajectory in a matter of almost two dozen minutes is both insanely impressive and a feat you only do if you know that your ambition isn't actually worth the world. And also I say redemption and make lot of emphasis on Laerryn destroying the tree. But Brennan was pretty clear, that blight just pushed opened an already leaking floodgate, not to mention the rest of the betrayer gods doing their own thing. Yes they all screwed up and Laerryn definitely screwed up. But this was all still going to happen anyway.

Can we talk about these characters and not bring up the one and only Zerxus Ilerez? I mean. Come on. Who is the most Proud Man here? Talk about a character dedicated to the true and utterly futile. And talk about a man who constantly constantly constantly tells himself that he is better than all his peers and honestly I imagine his friends. Asmodeus was right. All of his actions can be justified, but he rivals Laerryn in the distaste for the Holy and Natural. He just happens to be nicer about it. Laerryn hates I imagine the idea of power that is given to you (Holy) or the mysticism (natural) instead of the pure arcane you get from taking it for yourself. Zerxus I think truly and utterly believes himself to be better than the gods. That there is no wisdom to be had, no worth to be taken from them. The only reason Asmodeus ploy works is that Zerxus was 100% ready to believe the gods were these towering horrifying subjugating forces. He despises them in a unique way to most of the other brass ring. And it truly fucks him over. Also I have never seen a character so truly ready to double no triple no quadruple down on a bad decision. There is no explanation I can think of for not taking that Out at the end that Nydas had given him. Maybe it wouldn't have worked and the deal had already been struck. But to not even try is so incomprehensible to me. I love it. Also props to Brennan as Asmodeus, Father of Lies. As a patented Devil and Hell lover, this fed me so well, both his sweet lie and his ugly truth.

I wasn't expecting Loquatious to have as much Depth as he did. It makes sense. These are all great players. But I wasn't expecting this deeply deeply lovestruck man. More than anything his greatest failing was loyalty. It was beautiful and touching and wonderful. But well, attacking Nydas? Killing a woman? Potentially lying to the whole city? The whole world? All to save one woman. He's able of course to see the bigger picture. He got Laerryn to stop after all. But his loyalty doomed the world, just as his loyalty saved it. I'll say it here I'm just now noticing that all of their "Fatal flaws" played a part in starting the Apocalypse just as much as it played a part in mitigating it. Quay wouldn't stop Laerryn until perhaps it was too late, and then chose to stay and be with the woman he loves and to help her and help the city. Laerryn literally destroyed the tree and then ensured that the Titans couldn't come through. Patia had to know what the tree knew, and then gave all of that back to the city. Zerxus made a deal with the devil because he thought he saw a spark of redemption and then did the same thing again with Vespin Chloras and it worked. The only two that didn't have a direct action that I can remember in causing the apocalypse are Cerrit and Nydas, they both of course have their general blames, Nydas hoarding for much too long and not valuing the people until he did and Cerrit realizing that the order never looked up at the people running things whichet a crazy plan like this happen.

Speaking of Cerrit. Man Travis killed it. The only survivor of the ring of brass. The only non magical man there. The only one to say enough was enough. To call them out and to keep an eye on them. Nydas was the one that made me the happiest, I love a character desperate to avoid their horrible fate, the one character in a tragedy that tries to avoid the things to come. Laerryn is easily so central and important and cool and awful (in that "how do you not see it!" Way) and wonderful. But Cerrit was just so genuine. Yeah he was a Noir detective bird man. But also he was just a dad. Just a dad. And he cared so much that it saved them, and he cared so much that it saved him! It's just really sweet.

Patia was great and Marisha was awesome. But weirdly and I mean this in the most complimentary of ways. Patia probably made the smallest splashes in the group. Makes sense for the woman constantly controlling herself and others. She had her clutch moments and being a badass. She showed a caring in her surprising for her trope. But she never shocked or awed me personally. She was a conduit for shocking knowledge though. Through the scenes with the tree. I really don't mean this in a negative way. I think it's true to her character in a way I can't really describe.

F.r.i.d.a looks so cool i love themmm

Also the kids are starting to get strong i love it

Feels like yesterday when imogen had like, 10 hit points

Also this is absolutely the leylines being fucked

Something happened and magic everywhere is going heywire

I'm now convinced the exaltants are being "awakened" to be Predathos' army and it's all gonna go balls to the wall

Imogen has to be this campaign's double agent right? They're absolutely gonna have to fight her at some point and it's gonna wreck me

Now that I think about it does it mean they'll have to fight fearne too??? 😳

This is probably the most vulnerable and reasonable FCG has been all campaign for real

I don't think the real problem here is whether or not the gods are good, it's whether or not the Godeater is good, and even before we worry about that, it's about whether or not its gonna wreck everything and everyone in it's path to the Gods

Imogen herself is most likely gonna die for whatever this whole thing is if they let it happen

Like are we really willing to do all this shit and possibly extinguish all life on Exandria when you could like... not worship the Gods? It's not like they're forced to or smtg

Wait. WAIT. So if Ruidus is wherever (whenever?) the other half of the group is and it's NOT in Exandria anymore there are really only two possibilities for where the others are: back in time or in another realm and both are big problems for us

This is the only place where we can get heartfelt, beautiful monologues about the meaning of death and life and morning toot in the same episode and that's why I love this show

This fight is giving one of those old chihuahuas that keep snapping at your ankles but that has for some reason taken a burning passion rage against your robot vacuum

Also you can't convince me a dog wouldn't absolutely hate this thing

It would just feel like a threat, this weird human that isn't human and it can mimick stuff but also it sounds weird? My dogs would go NUTS

Listen. I'll be a chetney apologist for this one. I'm a wildlife veterinarian and animal behaviorist and idk where dude thought he was gonna get off approaching a wolf like that, or honestly approaching him alone at all

Surprising he survived all this time in wildemont tbh but I'll give him a pass bc it's is D&D

Love that Deanna is so horrified by them when this is not even the full party 😅 like, ma'am we're missing- *checks notes* one tree/cadaver/goo person, a magic rock rainbow sparkle barbarian and a 4ft tall widowed ballerina that is prob covered in monster blood as we speak 😀

Final thoughts:

Overall I loved this one, it was light and fun and everything I needed after all the stress from the last few weeks

I also enjoyed the split party dynamic more than I thought it would and I am hopeful it's gonna lead to some good things in the long run

It's a bold move ngl. One of the quintessential, funnest things about D&D parties is the found family, the unity of it all, it's seeing them spend time with each other and develop different dynamics, games, inside jokes

In any other situation it might alienate party members from each other and make it not feel as cohesive, maybe even jeopardize the forming of a tight bond.

But with Bell's Hells we have such close pairings that this almost feels like it has to be done

Fearne and Orym, FCG and Ashton, Laudna and Imogen are all pairings that came together and rely deeply on each other, to the point where it felt a little stiffening to the other members of the group bc these people very rarely sought deeper companionship and support from anyone other than their initial pairing

Also we can get a closer look at Chetney's backstory and hopefully Ashton's next episode when I'm hoping we'll see how the others are doing

I also was hoping there would be some time fuckery or realm travel and still kind of am, but it's sounding like the other half of the Hells were still in Marquet by the end of 52

If they are still in close proximity to the beam it's going to be a mess and I have no idea what to expect but chaos, specially since they can't call the others and I'm guessing shit is going DOWN over there

If they are indeed in the shadowfell, close to the key that Beau and Caleb tried to take down, I wonder if they could go after that connection and weaken whatever they are doing to Ruidus, hopefully even sever that connection completely.

Favorite character: Chirp! You know Emily is my favorite in every season lmao. But really every single character was so good, I cannot get over how perfect this season was

Least Favorite character: Suntar

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Rue/Hob and Binx/Andhera were incredible. We missed out on Grandfather/Grabalba and Squak/Jeremy Renner. The audacity of Lou to send the most romantic letter ever written to the baroness and then send a "you up" text to Theodore

Character I find most attractive: All of them???

Character I would marry: Binx

Character I would be best friends with: Andhera

A random thought: I so deeply wish we'd gotten to see more of Chirp with Esme and Peep. I know we didn't have the time but I wanted it!!

An unpopular opinion: I think a misfits and magic style special reunion would be perfect, but I don't want a second season with these characters. I think all their endings were perfect. A second season with the same cast and universe but all new characters would be ideal for me

My Canon OTP: The canon ones are so good!

My Non-canon OTP: The universe where we got Rue/Wuvvy and Andhera/Hob is very interesting. Also all the npcs Aabria made to romance everyone!! I would like to see them!!

Most Badass Character: Every time Andhera stood up for himself ;_; Hob finally realizing his worth and leaving his court, Rue's reveal of their true self, Binx coming to the bloom as the sole survivor of her court…. they're all amazing and badass

Most Epic Villain: Grandfather?????

Pairing I am not a fan of: I think any combination of these characters would have been good

Favourite Friendship: Chirp and Squak!! I will miss these bird cousins so dearly!! "Cousin, you can do no wrong in my eyes" they are so messy but love each other so much and then the found family of coming together with everyone else is so incredible

Character I most identify with: I think one of the things that make this season so great for me is I can relate to most of them in some way. Some combination of Rue and Andhera and Binx

Character I wish I could be: Binx

When I started shipping them: 2003!!! I am taking psychic damage thinking about the fact that it's been 19 years since this show premiered….

My thoughts: They are perfect! Peak romance! Mina teasing Rei into opening up more! Rei showing her that her life is worth fighting for beyond just being a senshi! The rage and despair Keiko brought as a 15 year old girl when Mina died! She still blows me away as an actress

What makes me happy about them: Fighting over dog food and idol nicknames and their devotion to Usagi and their duty and working together to find a balance for it all

What makes me sad about them: Mina's weapon going to Rei after her death, the look on Rei's face as she reads the letter Mina left, her powers manifesting wordlessly as she's wreathed in flames in battle immediately after………… this ship has everything

My wishlist: That the show had gotten to adapt every arc of the manga and we'd seen them actually get together instead of ending with them bumping into each other awkwardly during the wedding bouquet toss and then immediately looking away from each other as their friends watch and smirk. Obviously the most platonic of reactions

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: In pgsm universe, nobody, but Usa/Mina otherwise. And senshi/shitennou

My happily ever after for them: Just being together!

003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:

How I feel about this character: My beloved!! Gone from canon but never gone from my heart

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Just Jag. Love them meeting after flying together and having him walk past all the people he's supposed to greet and his newly met uncle to complisult her flying lmao. Her other love interests were so terrible. Why did we have to spend 15 years stuck in love square hell (oh, because she's the only girl in the next gen and so that was of course her fate)

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Her relationships with Jacen and Anakin, looking over them as the oldest, the despair and grief watching Anakin sacrifice himself, her twin bond with Jacen and their constant awareness of each other and their push and pull during the war but also the support they gave each other until, y'know, Caedus

My unpopular opinion about this character: She never got her due. She constantly took a backseat to her brothers, until they were both dead, and then to Ben, and then when she was FINALLY getting her own trilogy, fucking disney happened. We can't have nice things! And yet despite it all she was so incredible! So dedicated to protecting people! Just as talented as her uncle and twin! The best pilot in a generation! An incredible lightsaber combatant! In tune with the Force! I LOVE her

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: The sword of the jedi trilogy!! More of her relationships with Leia and Mara and Tenel ka and Tahiri and Mirta and Winter. More of her happiness with Jag. Not spending like two years brainwashed by bugs. More of a throughline over the series to chart her grief and responsibility over watching her youngest brother die and killing her twin and fighting a war from the age of 15 and being handed a prophecy at 17 telling her she'll always be alone but she'll take comfort in the safety she brings to others. We should have gotten eight movies adapting the new jedi order and legacy of the force series with a clone wars style cartoon about her during the vong war, dammit

Favorite friendship for this character: Lowie, Jag, her bond with her brothers, would have been nice if the authors cared to do more with her female friendships. We hardly ever saw her team up with any of them
