I didn't post about it because I didn't want to curse myself, but I've been calling this weekend "writing retreat" (aka I had the apartment to myself for most of it and spent it all reading and writing) AND NOW THE FIC IS DONE

#a glorious time really #I mean ch 3 and 4 still need polish drafts and I have to figure how on earth to summarize this thing in a way that does it justice #but it's complete it's all on the page I can finally stop agonizing over hitting this part of it!!!!#phew!#so um yes ch 1 possibly coming later this week as long as I don't decide I hate and need to overhaul the second half after I sleep on it

Uncomfortable with dancing.

Ramshackle prefect felt a bit ridiculous crying while wearing cool clothes.

Based on a personal experience and a part of me really felt bad for Idia when he had to go dance and sing in front of people, would have been mortified as well.

good evening, all. it is May the 25th. our lilacs are blooming, just as the ones at the Watch House did. and I am thinking about remembrance of the fallen, and GNU, and the love in commemoration.

y'know, I read Night Watch… oh, maybe a year ago and some months ago. and the lilac symbolism, the remembrance of the Watch, has always struck me with the depth of the emotion of it, the tangibility of it in the flowers. but I wasn't aware that today was the day until I saw commemorative posts, all that gorgeous artwork and more, on my dash.

I was also not aware, until now, that fans commemorated the day not only because of the book reference, but in support of Terry Pratchett and of those with Alzheimer's. which knocked me over a bit because of course, of course the group that would use GNU to honor him would do that. and… I've been thinking about GNU a lot, lately, and this caught me again.

I read Going Postal a bit ago, and reread it recently. both times, the parts about GNU made me tear up. this idea of the names, the memories, the lives of the clacks workers who dedicated themselves to ensuring that people heard each other's voices—all those names spoken again and again and again by that which they poured their souls into, winging along in the air as they could not, an eternal reminder that they were loved—how could that not touch a person's heart?

when I found out that fans online used it to memorialize him, I damn well cried. hell, I still tear up just thinking about it. do you know, there's a code for an HTTP header "X-Clacks-Overhead: GNU Terry Pratchett" written by Reddit users to put in webpages, where it goes unseen by the average user? and in 2015, when Netcraft took a survey, there were eighty-four thousand websites using it? it's eight years later—how many thousands upon thousands of websites have this now, do you think? how many little cables of light has his name flown along, now? how many times?

that alone is absurdly and unimaginably lovely in its own right, but… there's something else to it. there's something about remembering with the lilac sprigs every year, just as Vimes and those who were there remembered their dead. something about how, when we take up our lilac sprigs, we carry a little piece of the characters in our hearts, too. I kept trying to put my finger on why that makes me tear up the way it does. the conclusion I came to is this:

what greater way to honor a writer is there, but to honor them the way they did the characters they poured their heart and soul into? what better way to say we know you and you are not forgotten and your work and words and gifts to the world are held in our hearts forever than to remember them by their own words, their own vision? how else could we say you embodied all the good you believed in and wished to see in the world, but to memorialize them after the little pieces of their soul they wrapped in ink and put upon the page?

it is a knowing of the writer, to remember them in their way. it is not a worn-out faceless platitude, but a reminder that their work has been read and will continue to be, that the characters and world they loved enough to bring to life last just as their name does. such remembrance is warm and loving and delights in their memory even as it grieves.

and now Pratchett's name has been written in his tradition, over and over and over, across the vast plane of the Internet, where it will—with any luck—continue to fly for generations to come.

there is no way to truly express the beauty of that… but perhaps we can catch a glimpse of it in the lilacs, both ours and the Watch's.

How long does it usually take you to make a drawing? :3 I know it’s different depending on the caliber of the drawing but for an example let’s say just Barnaby and Wally doing whatever in a scene

i just saw what you mean and for your sake i'll Pretend I Did Not See lol. its ok tho it happens, Tumblr's a tough cookie to wrangle

hm. it Does vary wildly, both depending on quality, how used to scribbling a thing i am, and how well the art-mojo is flowing! on a bad night, a simple sketch could take an hour while the same sketch on a good night could take 15 minutes

and it's also hard to say since i don't really keep track! for example, The First One in this collage is a more involved sketch and i suspect it took thirty minutes maybe? i remember having some Difficulties so maybe longer? trying to get size differences between multiple characters in the same sketch adds a Lot of time, as does making sure they interact properly. while the last one in the collage (the Nom) probably took closer to ten minutes

i know the Laughingstock in Aziracrow's outfits i belted out in, oh... an hour or three? it's really hard to say! i think it was several bc i was watching gomens at the time, and i think it got through a couple of episodes... clothes add a lot of time! but certain things that i thought i did Quickly took hours in reality, and i only notice when i look up and see the clock has Changed Drastically! i have a very loose perception of time!

it really just depends on my motivation & how used to drawing something i am. like scribbling Eddie takes a while, lots of guidelines and erasing and redrawing. but scribbling Barnaby? easy. takes me seconds in comparison. way less guidelines - i know where everything is and where it goes! drawing dragons takes even less time - This One was done in a Blink, and the only guides i used were head circle / snout circle / jawline.

#the Size of the sketch absolutely makes a big difference #like sketch comms are really tough since im drawing them at a Much bigger resolution #and it throws off the feel of the brush & i have to go about it in a drastically different way than what im comfortable with #because i want to provide the Best Resolution/Quality possible!#and then tiny sketches are easy and quick cause it's close quarters. cozy!#and im more accustomed to keeping my brushstrokes Tight and Short #but im slowly getting used to scribbling Bigger!#just today i realized i was automatically scribbling larger than i used to #good! higher quality!#it will translate into my comms hopefully!#i still have one left... ive been slowly chipping away at it #rambles from the bog #i think im underestimating the time...#bc i Do draw slowly i think #it usually takes a while!#unless im In The Zone and then im belting things out at lightspeed #like remember that glorious time period where i was posting every day often Twice a day and the queue was backed up for Days?#yeah.... me too....#i am very rarely in the Zone #its tough to think and its tough to Create and the process is so much!!!#it takes Energy i rarely have! so that slows it down too...#but yeah my 'process' is very much Not a process lmao #in the wise words of hobie brown: i dont believe in consistency #its not in my nature! to my detriment more often than not!

The weather has been gorgeous today and I played tennis and I roasted a whole head of cauliflower and I sat in a pool of sunlight while I drank a delicious drink out of my new cup and it was perfect. I'm so happy to be back in love with this city and this life.

Which was really disappointing tbh.#The soundtrack is good but Nakanuma...he just hits SO much differently.#maybe Im looking at it through nostalgic glasses or the ads got to me but his songs not being there until the last few hours of the game?#still the game is fucking awesome and worth the asking price theres so much replayability imo. Its a strong 9/10.
