It’s been a few months since Empires s2 came to an end and I wanted to make a piece reflecting on the time we spent with these characters 🥰✨ When season 1 ended I did a series of paintings set to the End Poem, and so I decided to revisit the concept once again, making sure to switch up which line corresponded to which person. This series means a lot to me—in fact, this is one of two big Empires s2 projects I’ve been working on! There’s another one still in the works :D

My Roman Empire is Andrew's decision to stay in the car with Tilda during the crash. I think he could have done any other way, but he decided to do it in a way that could harm both instead of harming just her. And I think he did it because deep down he hoped he wouldn't survive either. We all know he's already passively suicidal and, if he hadn't made it, he wouldn't have had to face Aaron during the aftermath. It would have been easier to leave him and Nicky to sort themselves out, after all

Imperial Culture

Many different cultures can be found throughout the imperium depending on race, environment, and other factors. The core “imperial culture”, or the culture of the upper-class, is one of extravagance and luxury with little regard for others. Members of the upper-class tend to be arrogant and condescending towards those they view as lower than themselves. Honor and loyalty to one’s family and superiors are considered very important. Women are considered to be equal to men, although same-sex relationships are considered taboo.

This core culture is often impressed onto the lower classes and even other polities through imperialist policies, including forced cultural assimilation using propaganda. This assimilation creates a mentality in which humanity is perceived to be superior to the other species.

The "Imperial" Mentality

The “imperial” mentality created by this core culture is fundamentally incompatible with the concept of autonomy. Under this mentality, states perceived to be “lesser” must be subjugated and exploited for the benefit of the imperium and its elite. Subjugated states are often restricted from expanding in order to keep them compliant and to prevent them from posing any risk to the imperium’s dominance.

sorry but snow is such a well written iconic villain and donald sutherland performs him so fucking good it's almost hilarious how i start practically foaming at the mouth every time the man opens his mouth to say something deplorable in those movies, like he's so utterly and despicably wrong about almost every crucial thing from katniss and peeta's relationship to human nature as a whole and yet the second he starts talking about how hope is the only thing stronger than fear and how you have to allow a little hope but control it so its spark doesn't grow into revolution and how it's the things we love the most that destroy us you bet your ass i am on the floor screaming crying throwing up because that is my psychotic mustache-twirling villain RIGHT THERE
