The Church of Saint Porphyrius was built in the 12th century AD and is on the site of a previous church that existed since the 5th century AD. The church itself was only minorly damaged, but a building on the church campus sheltering Gazans was destroyed and several Gazans were killed.

i feel like im having a lot of delayed realizations on account of being suicidal for the majority of my life and now not being suicidal like. idk thinking about what life is now that im actively choosing to be alive. i used to be like scared of everyone i love dying but its like. death and grief are a part of life... and grief is like hard but also to even have something to grieve is worth something.

#I HATE HOW GOOD THAT WANDAVISION QUOTE IS #GRIEF REALLY IS LOVE PERSISTING.......................#but anyways as i get better at distress tolerance and feelings #im coming to terms with the fact that grief is a part of life #wow growing up is so hard and i really truly didnt ever think i would do it #when i was at my great uncles funeral. at the cemetary #i couldnt stop thinking about gaza #im too angry and sad to say anything eloquent about it #except that i think i want to do some sort of memorial in nyc to have space to grieve #especially because the constant violence robs people of the ability to even properly mourn their dead #it feels like the least i can do to make a space for the palestinian community in nyc #i also think theres a lot of survivors guilt and i want to make a space where people can confront that as well #i think doomscrolling is in some ways a manifestation of survivors guilt #i think about palestinians i know who checked for their name in the death records #i really lost focus here huh #i forgot to pack my journal #i also need to get my ticket home lol oops lol i am quite stressed about it actuallt

In Gaza, journalists are passing out from exhaustion and famine. Despite the ICJ ruling, the US and Australia are intentionally defunding UNWRA based on baseless claims by Israel that members of the aid group are Hamas-sympathizers. Netanyahu, of course, has ignored the ICJ ruling. Israel has banned insulin pens from arriving in Gaza, a particularly cruel and inhumane crime to add to their laundry list of offences. Nothing has changed, and things are getting worse.

It is not that hard to not buy things. To not watch things. Perhaps it is inconvenient, and makes you go out of your way, and costs a little more to buy alternatives. But if you were to attend a funeral a day for every child that has died in Gaza so far, it would take you over 27 years. When the worst that will happen to you is that you don't watch a TV show featuring a zionist, you don't buy a specific brand that donates to and supports zionism, how could that possibly compare to the plight of Palestinians who must amputate limbs without anesthesia?

Once again, this is the BDS list of brands to boycott.

Journalists should remember that Israel's first response after they killed their colleague Shireen Abu-Akleh was to say Palestinians shot her. This is part of a consistent Israeli military information damage control strategy in response to such events.

Then, they attacked her funeral, live on camera in front of the whole world, and proceeded to blame Palestinians.

In 2021, after destroying a building in Gaza housing the AP and Aljazeera office, again on live TV they lied about it being a legitimate target.

In 2018 Israel snipers shot thousands of unarmed Palestinians in Gaza, many live on camera, then lied about them being armed.

In 2014 they killed the Baker boys while they were playing soccer on the beach, in front of the world's cameras, and then they lied about it.

The list goes on and on. It is part of a deliberate strategy to muddy waters & defuse international outrage over the most gruesome crimes so that they can have the maximum possible time to continue carrying them out. If you as a journalist are playing into this, you are complict.

I woke up to the news about Refaat Alreer. I still feel cold. Imagine seeing someone talking on your TL every day, narrating what the genociders are doing, counting the dead and telling their stories, amplifying his colleagues in Palestinian activism and academia, advocating and pleading endlessly for a ceasefire, delivering blistering witticisms about Zionist propaganda and then...he and his whole family are dead.

Two of my favourite tweets by him, calling out the craven Western media for never naming Israel.

It feels like a funeral today. My whole TL full of his students and Palestinians mourning Refaat alongside writers and journalists and academics from all over the Global South. The only people who matter to us is us.

Meanwhile, Zionists are attacking us under our mourning tweets, circulating the tweet where he laughed at the monstrous lie of Hamas cooking a baby in an oven during Oct 7th, one of the lies that fuelled the slaughter that eventually killed him too.

This was his last tweet.

USAmerican disability activist Imani Barbarin's tweet today was partially motivated by Refaat's death.

I need to go offline for a while.

I leave you with Refaat's last poem that was his pinned tweet for over a month. When a storyteller dies, generations are robbed of universes. When a poet dies, the world loses a piece of its soul.
