Farmer Brown's up to no good scientifically as he creates overgrown farm animals with which he assaults Gotham City in retribution of his strange growth project being taken away from him.
Look out Robin! He's Amish!" I kept waiting for Batman to yell this at some point in the episode, but was sadly disappointed what he didn't. This was an attempt to be a throwback to those bad 50's sci-fi B-movies, and well, it worked in a way. It was bad. The concept was just out of place for the world of Batman, especially since the Batman space adventures of the 1950's ended in the 1950's when they were supposed to.
The concept could have worked if applied well, but the combination of having this Amish farmer screaming "Yee-haw" and calling the Caped Crusaders "Batfolk" mixed with elements like the goat-ransom-message and the giant insects (on a farm?) Just didn't work. Oh, and add in some of that wacky technology that Farmer Brown probably borrowed from Apokalypse and hey, we got us one hootinany of a bad episode, pardner! Yip-yip-yipee!
The animation was nothing to write home about, or review as such since it's been the same animation quality used in Chemistry, Joker's Millions and Old Wounds. The inconsistent character models and sloppy action was all there, but you have to admit, the large farm animals did look threatening and twisted.
Overall, this episode could have been saved with the Bat-team commenting on how absurd this all was. The quip from Bullock about how Batman was about to die almost made the final scene worth it, but what this episode needed was a lot of jokey remarks about how far-fetched Brown's plan was, then maybe some dignity would be salvaged.
Dick Grayson revisits his roots as a circus performer, only to find someone is controlling the circus animals in the undertaking of crimes.
This was a great 'classic' Batman episode in that it was a traditional plot of the original series with the team-work of Batman and 'Robin', now Nightwing. Even the original musical themes of Batman and the Mad Hatter were used during key sequences! The use of the hose in the fight with the bears was very reminiscent of one of Batman and Robin's last adventures together in SubZero and was an excellent addition to the episode.
The attitude that Batman first took to Nightwing in this episode showed great disapproval of Dick's transformation into his own man and was continued with his barging in on Dick's territory. It was especially evident during their second meeting at Dick's loft when Robin interrupted and Batman snapped at him. This undertone to the episode was a defining element in the relations between Bruce and Dick, but unfortunately, the very final scene seemed to break this.
The animation wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't horrible either. If anything, the animals were the one's with the superior animation and drawing. The characters did hold a single form, but sometimes things just looked out of place or not as smooth as they could be.
An overlooked episode that should be given a second glance because of the heavy character interactions and conflicts.
What makes this episode so worth while is Batman's continual disapproval of Dick's transformation into Nightwing and his condescending attitude to everything that Nightwing does, and somehow in the midst of it all, Nightwing is able to keep a cool head about which I think is a great quality and really defines his character's growth and evolution. Not to mention when you mix in the new Robin this episode makes sparks fly between our main characters.
As I was saying, the episode is interesting because it makes our quarreling heroes to try and set aside their differences to concentrate on the crime at hand. Batman was just a total jerk to Nightwing. From rude comments on his stealth skills, to disrupting his privacy, to just showing no sign of approval at all, the tension really built up because you always wondered what may happen next. And then you add Robin in, who totally looks up to Nightwing as a rolemodel, which I've always enjoyed, but is under Batman's command, makes for a bit of struggle for him as well. Bringing back a part of Dick's past was also another great plot device for the characters, as he's dealing with two aspects of it, being a partner to Batman, and in a sense reliving his childhood which adds more conflict and turmoil Nightwing has to deal with, not to mention he ends up saving the entire circus. I enjoyed seeing the circus Dick grew up in and all the performers were really neat.
Now to the main plot we've got the Mad Hatter. Always thought he was an interesting character and villain and I liked all his other appearances but this one felt rusty and old. I did like the fact he was controlling animals which added a different aspect to the story and some interesting action scenes our heroes had to deal with, but what exactly was he gaining by disguising as a circus clown and controlling the performers? I guess you could say he was furthering his research into mind control, but the episode completely drowned out Hatter's scheme with Batman and Nightwing feuds.
The action scenes were nice. The one with the gorilla was neat to see because they all had no idea what to expect from it. And for obvious reasons the last two were great because of the fact that it was like Batman and Robin fighting side by side again, and while they fought outside, in battle, they managed to put aside their differences and worked like partners to achieve their goal. The animation was solid, nothing special, but solid and good looking. Nice bits of humor as well between Bullock and the clown and Tim scooping poop.
An underrated episode should definitely be looked at just for the depths of character interactions and internal conflict.
Enoch Brown is a brilliant microbiologist and runs his Farmer Brown company that supplies cattle beef and other staples in Gotham City. Brown began to experiment on growth hormones and created monsters. After one went wild during the annual Agricultural Expo, Brown was forced out of Gotham and bankrupt.
Brown relocated to an island estate where he continued to work on altering the DNA of animals and built up an army of sorts. A year later, Brown set his monsters loose and demanded a $50 million ransom. Instead of paying, the vehicle was lined with fake money and housed Batman, Batgirl and Robin. Brown and his daughter overpowered the trio and locked them in a rocket silo filled with hatching praying mantis. Batman created an exit and launched the rigged silo straight for Brown. He and Emmy Lou were located and arrested.
Miranda Kane is the inheritor to the Kane Family Animal Acts of Haley's Circus. Kane grew up in the circus alongside Dick Grayson and the Flying Graysons until the tragic accident. Kane's parents retired to Sarasota and she took over the trade and trained animals, from lions to gorillas.
Kane became the lead suspect in a series of robberies that lasted six months in various cities that the Circus visited. However, the culprit turned out to be the Mad Hatter. Kane and the rest of the Circus were placed under his control, when he was revealed. Hatter manipulated the crew into fighting Batman and Nightwing. Mad Hatter was defeated and Kane, exonerated.

We're in high school and you're late for class. You bump into me as you turn a corner, your sprint broken when our bodies collide, sending the books I was clutching sheepishly to my chest falling to the ground. "Sorry!" you exclaim, as you see me bend down, onto my knees, to pick them up. You feel guilty, coming down to the floor to help me. Except you realize I wasn't carrying books with me. You look around and it's those chunky boxes video games used to come in, except they're all Zoo Tycoon 2 expansion packs. To your left, Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals; to your right, there's Zoo Tycoon 2: African Adventures and Zoo Tycoon 2: Dino Danger. You say what the fuck as I slowly raise my head to meet your gaze. "I'm Tom," I say. "I want to become a zookeeper one day." You ask me why the fuck I bring these to school. I look into your eyes, confused. "You mean my books?" You tell me they're not books, they're fucking expansion packs for Zoo Tycoon 2. Now the confusion in my eyes turns to melancholy. "Yeah, that's what everyone tells me. But they're like books to me. I've learned so much." You watch as I extend one long finger and slide the biggest of the boxes across the floor, right between us. Zoo Tycoon 2: Ultimate Collection, it reads.

GOOD MENTAL HEALTH GAMES
So here’s a list of games that help me get through bad days, whether it’s just being out of spoons, or being triggered, or just needing to not think for a hot second, it doesn’t matter. I’ll make sure to tell you why they might appeal, because not every game will work for every mood/situation.
STARDEW VALLEY [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 / SWITCH / IOS / ANDROID ] — of course, this is the ultimate good mental health game. It’s very relaxing, it’s involved enough that you can focus on it without having to do anything intensive. You can play at your own pace, and you can even play with a friend, if you need that extra support.
GRAVEYARD KEEPER [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 / SWITCH / IOS / ANDROID ] — this game is here for the same reason as stardew valley, but with an entirely different vibe. You play a man from our time who’s mysteriously transported to medieval times, who has to run a graveyard to find his way back. If Stardew Valley is too soft and cutesy for you, you’ll like Graveyard Keeper’s more morbid twist on it. Steeped in dark humour.
NO MAN’S SKY [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 ] — surely everyone’s heard of this game from its disastrous launch back in 2016. Since then, Hello Games has worked tirelessly to bring existing and new players free updates and turn it into the game that they’d promised from the start. I’d say they’ve delivered. This game is vast, with plenty to do, plenty to see; you can get lost exploring planet after planet, learning more about the other civilisations that inhabit the galaxies (yes, plural), trading, hunting pirates, raiding freighters, owning freighters, base building, playing with friends... This game can initially be very overwhelming, but the key to this game is to just focus on one thing at a time.
ASTRONEER [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 ] — if No Man’s Sky is too vast for you, then you might want to try your hand at Astroneer. It’s a lot more contained, much more stylised, and since there’s less content, it’s a lot harder to lose yourself in how much there is to actually do and thus get overwhelmed. Just a fun, lowkey planetary exploration game with cartoon-y graphics. Also with co-op options.
CITIES: SKYLINES [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 / SWITCH ] — if you’re looking for something to just relax with but still get the sense you’re doing something productive, then you might want to try your hand at Cities: Skylines. The goal is to make a functional city, down to managing the flow of traffic and meeting the zoning demands of your citizens, et cetera. It’s easy to pour a few hours into this once you get the hang of it. Of course, you can also go the Sims route and just give yourself infinite money to design a city to your wishes.
JURASSIC WORLD EVOLUTION [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 ] — so this is like the old Zoo Tycoon, if the animals were large long-extinct creatures that have a habit of breaking out of their habitats if sufficiently agitated. There’s two ways you can play the game; you can follow the story line, which slowly seeks to reclaim the islands lost in the Jurassic Park trilogy, right down to wrangling the now wild dinosaurs roaming the islands and turning the GenSec bases into functional parks. Or, once you get a 4 star rating on Isla Matanceros, you go sandbox mode on Isla Nublar, which provides you with ample space and neigh unlimited money to go wild on.
BORDERLANDS 2 [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 / IOS / ANDROID ] — if you’re more into shoot and loot, you’ll find Borderlands 2 (and the Borderlands franchise in and of itself) quite satisfying. I recommend BL2 especially because while it’s dated, its graphics and gameplay still holds up, it’s on older gen consoles as well, and its price tag is a lot less costly than immediately going for Borderlands 3. The game’s funny, it doesn’t really require you to think a lot, and it’s just great fun shooting AI in the face and blowing things up. Even if you’re self-reportedly ‘bad at FPS’, there’s no expectations where Borderlands 2 is concerned. Just sorta aim and shoot, no doubt something will die and give you a shiny prize for it. Endorphines galore.
SPORE [ PC ] — disclaimer, Spore is great up to a certain point, and after that it becomes absolute garbage. Most people agree that the microbial and creature stages of Spore are absolutely fantastic and there’s some whacky fun to be had creating ridiculous-looking creatures and getting them to survive in the direction you’ve decided to take them. Generally, after the Creature Stage comes the Civilisation Stage, which is about the time I restart the game, which is a pity. The longest stage, which is the Space Stage, is arguably also the worst stage. But it’s cheap, and the first two stages are really just that iconic.
TWO POINT HOSPITAL [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 / SWITCH ] — if you’re like me and you’ve been playing video games on PC for 25 years, surely you’ll remember a little game called Theme Hospital. The weirdest, most ridiculous hospital simulation game ever created. This is that, but from 2018, opposed to 1997. I’ve spent hours upon hours in Theme Hospital trying to save patients, make my layouts make sense, and keep people from littering everywhere, you heathens! In later levels, it can get pretty stressful, but particularly earlier levels, it’s just good ol’ fun.
THE SIMS 4 [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 ] — speaking of the Sims, the franchise is obviously the most well-known ‘I know I’m in a depression hole because I played for the past 21 hours and I haven’t eaten yet and I probably won’t shower for the next 5 days’ game. Granted, I list the Sims 4, but any iteration of the Sims works for this purpose. Just motherlode and go, my friends. Cure the emptiness by creating a house you’ll never be able to afford. (Personally I use it to create my characters from toddler and making them meet and kiss their SOs, but you know.)
PLANET ZOO [ PC ] — I likened Jurassic World Evolution to Zoo Tycoon but with dinosaurs. Planet Zoo is Zoo Tycoon on steroids. That’s it. Planet Zoo is incredibly robust and in-depth, but the idea is simple: manage a zoo, help animals get off the endangered species list, and release them into the wild where you can while keeping visitors happy and keeping your park clean (why are visitors in sim games always such terrible raccoons)! Go creative mode and just create a zoo to your own wishes with no constraints and you’ll have a great mental health game.
PLANET COASTER [ PC / XBOX1 / PS4 ] — if Planet Zoo is Zoo Tycoon on steroids, then Planet Coaster is Rollercoaster Tycoon on steroids (which, in turn, was a more robust version of 1994′s Theme Park, from the same devs as Theme Hospital mentioned above). Like with Planet Zoo, you make a theme park, create rides that kill people and desperately try to hold back the tide of litter that’ll inevitably happen. But really, just go creative mode and make rollercoasters with so much G-force that it’ll kill everyone that rides them.
RAFT [ PC ] — a co-op game set in an Earth enveloped by oceans, you’re essentially a scout on a raft and that raft will become your home as you build onto it. You go from island to island to collect materials, seeds for food and trees, and discover the lore of the world. Your only enemy is hunger, thirst, and the ever-present shark that really only wants to hug you with its teeth. It’s a friend. Promise.

Game 100 - Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection by Frontier Developments
(I can’t believe this pandemic has lasted so long that I played 100 games instead of being outside or seeing my friends or going on trips or playing D&D with my friends in the same room or having parties)
What did I think it was at first? I’ll be honest. I thought I had bought Zoo Tycoon 2?
That was the one I wanted. It’s OK though. I’ve been playing just a TON of Planet Zoo lately, and this one is made by Frontier who is also the team behind Planet Zoo and Planet Coaster? What a world we live in.
In Planet Zoo (and in Zoo Tycoon 2 before it, which I sold on eBay because I thought this was that game), my goal has always been to create the Noah’s Ark of zoos with a Jeep ride that goes through each environment. Is this another canvas upon which I can create Animal Prison™ ? We shall see. I’ll play through story mode today since I did that for Planet Coaster and it seems like a good idea.
In real life, I love a zoo. I love to see the animals. Also a zoo sometimes has a Mold-A-Rama which is a favorite treat. I miss going to the zoo.
How was the character creator? This iteration of Zoo Tycoon is pretty heavily avatar based. You can run around as a character in the zoo, which is cool. The tutorials popped me in as Whiteboy McBasic, but I was able to customize pretty well. The options are limited, but I could make a zoo tycoon I was happy with.
How was the game? My first thought after playing for a while was that this is Planet Zoo but Simpler.
I played through all of the tutorials and a few challenge levels. A lot of the customization of animal habitats is stripped out - the new focus is on animal gameplay. Your avatar has to refill the habitats and care for the animals. A lot of the decoration and design is pre-done, though there are some modular elements.
My main point of enjoyment with these tycoon games is the design element, whether in the sandbox or the challenge levels. There simply isn’t a lot of designing to do here. Many of the animals and design options in Sandbox mode are gated behind completing certain challenges as well.
Being able to interact with the animals was cool though.
What did I not love? Him.
But seriously, the challenge levels I played got boring very quickly. They were all time-based and extremely easy to complete. Additionally, there was no way to speed up time that I found, which meant that you spent every moment you were trying to grow your crowds or zoo level just staring at the screen.
At 3 hours and $18.99, was it really worth it? I think this game is basically Planet Zoo with a much lower barrier to entry. If you aren’t sure if you will enjoy a zoo game, or if you have a kid around who wants to try their hand at zoo management, this game might be a good fit - but if you love the creative points of the original series this probably won’t scratch that itch. It didn’t for me.
