Essaouira Morocco
Essaouira Old City – Lonely Planet I arrived in Essaouira on Wednesday, after a torturous trip from Zagreb. I’m still trying to figure out why flights from Croatia to Morocco require such a loooooong layover in a European airport hub? My goal was avoiding the longest layover, and I did that, but soon discovered additional unforeseen complications. The flight durations themselves – Zagreb to…

Posted: 2/25/24 | February 25th, 2024 Miami is well-known for its brightly colored culture, exciting nightlife, and sun-kissed beaches. Miami offers a diverse range of neighborhoods to explore and lots of interesting things to see and do, from the iconic Art Deco architecture of South Beach to the vibrant energy of Wynwood (here's my guide to all the neighborhoods). Miami offers more five-star hotels per capita than any other city in the nation, so there are plenty of options here, whether you are looking for an upscale beach experience or something more reasonably priced. I’ve been coming to the city for years and have stayed in a lot of different hotels. To help you plan your visit, here’s my list of the best hotels in Miami:  1. Yotel Miami This four-star hotel is situated in downtown Miami and features a sleek, modern design with a distinctively Miami aesthetic—think neon lighting and vibrant colors done in a playful, tasteful way. There are two types of accommodations available: rooms and full apartments (referred to as "pads"). All have work desks, wireless charging stations, smart beds that can be adjusted, and large bathrooms with rainfall showers. A rooftop terrace with a pool and cocktail bar, a hot tub, a 24-hour fitness center equipped with Peloton bikes, co-working spaces, and an à la carte breakfast restaurant are among the amenities offered by the hotel. The fact that the hotel has a designated beach area on South Beach with free loungers is really nice if you want to laze in the sun. 2. Citizen Miami Brickell CitizenM, a four-star hotel in the center of Brickell, features vibrant and lively artwork all over the place, including a vibrant large-scale mural called "Cosmic Connection" on the building's side (made by Miami-native artist Jen Stark). I adore this brand so much. One compact, well-designed room type that maximizes available space is part of the citizenM concept. To ensure a restful night's sleep, every room features luxurious king-sized beds, plush pillows, blackout blinds, and soundproofing. The rooms are high-tech too; you can control various room settings from a tablet or app on your phone, including the lighting, temperature, blinds, and flatscreen TV. A rooftop pool, meeting rooms, a "living room" with couches, a library, a co-working space, and two restaurants—one of which serves a hearty daily breakfast buffet that accommodates all dietary restrictions—are just a few of the hotel's many fun communal spaces. 3. Hotel Ocean Situated on Miami's renowned Ocean Drive, this modest three-star hotel boasts a retro, beach-inspired design and is conveniently close to the beach. The rooms are large and bright, with desks, mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and extremely comfy beds. Large walk-in showers with two shower heads and tubs are common in the newly remodeled bathrooms. Along with free bikes for guests to use, the hotel has a lovely restaurant with seating on the sidewalk and in an outdoor courtyard, and fresh coffee in the lobby. You have to check into multiple adjacent hotels to use their amenities, which include an outdoor pool, a spa complete with a hammam, sauna, meditation area, and relaxation room, and a 24-hour gym. The location is unbeatable, and you get a ton of value here. 4. The Betsy This elegant boutique hotel with five stars is well-known for its Art Deco-inspired décor. It was even named one of the world's best hotels by Travel + Leisure! You will not need anything here, as you can probably imagine. The hotel offers opulent amenities like marble bathrooms with walk-in showers and hardwood floors, along with rooms and suites that are decorated with carefully chosen original artwork and live orchids. A minibar, desk, cozy bathrobes, baby alpaca blankets, and unbelievably comfy beds are among the amenities available in the rooms. The Betsy also features a gorgeous rooftop where you can enjoy yoga sessions in the morning, relax by the pool, or have a drink at the cocktail bar; there is
also a fitness center with Peloton bikes, a quaint library, and multiple on-site restaurants (one of which serves breakfast every day). The hotel offers free chairs, umbrellas, and loungers in its private area, which is only a few steps from the beach. Stay here if you want luxury. 5. Hampton Inn Miami-Coconut Grove/Coral Gables Although it is part of the Hampton Inn chain, this three-star hotel is still an affordable choice with convenient access to the Coconut Grove and Coral Gables neighborhoods. The hotel has everything you need for a comfortable stay, even though its design is nothing to write home about (if you have been to one Hampton Inn, you have been to them all). Handy room features include a desk, flat-screen TV, walk-in shower with strong pressure, and a large bathroom with a mini fridge and microwave. In addition, this hotel has a peaceful outdoor pool, a small fitness center, free coffee, tea, and warm cookies in the lobby all day long. It is also conveniently located next to a Metromover station, making it simple to travel throughout the city from here. For those on a tight budget or families seeking a quieter location, it is a great choice. 6. Sentral Wynwood Spacious, designer-furnished apartments with vibrant décor, an abundance of natural light, and wall-mounted artwork are available in this four-star aparthotel. Stainless steel appliances, such as a dishwasher, oven, microwave, coffee maker, and even a washer/dryer, are featured in the fully furnished kitchens. The apartments also feature a large bathroom with a hairdryer, bath or shower, and free toiletries, as well as a living area with a flatscreen TV that offers streaming services. The hotel features a gorgeous rooftop pool, a fitness center, and short-term rental Tesla cars. If you are going to be in Miami for a while, Sentral is a great choice, especially if you are traveling and need a place to work. The hotel offers free coffee in the coworking space on the premises as well as in-room workspaces. The neighborhood around it is full of cafes that are suitable for working. 7. The Miami Beach Edition My preferred hotel in Miami is this five-star hotel by the beach since I can use my Marriott hotel points to get free stays (without points, it is very expensive). It is amazing. Its large rooms and suites are individually designed and furnished with tasteful artwork, soft hues, and spacious bathrooms with marble floors. In addition, coffee makers, minibars, 48-inch flatscreen TVs, and breathtaking views of the ocean are available in some of the rooms. In addition to a pool and six (yes, six) restaurants, the hotel offers an on-site gym and spa. This area also has a couple bars, a nightclub, and a bowling alley. It is possible to stay here the entire time and never have to leave (without getting bored, of course). The so-called capital of Latin America, Miami, has plenty to offer, whether you are there to party on South Beach, enjoy the art in Wynwood, or just lounge on the beach. Selecting one of the aforementioned lodging options will ensure that your visit to the second-most visited city in the US is unforgettable!

Neom, a New Urbanism on the Waterfront
Tumblr media
Five years into Neom's construction, many staff members have left, leading those left behind to joke that when working for MBS' vanity project you bring two buckets. Neom is touted as an eco-friendly utopia, yet that comes at a cost. The Line The Line is a pair of mirrored buildings designed by US studio Morphosis Architects - founded by Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne - that will serve as the focal point of Neom. Boasting an expansive interior court that can host various activities or be used as an art gallery space, The Line was intended to become "a living breathing urban space". These structures will be connected by an expansive outdoor garden area featuring panoramic mountain views and several artificial lakes dotted throughout. A swan-shaped bridge will also connect their upper and lower levels. Another component of The Line is a circular plaza with a retractable roof, perfect for hosting events and concerts. Furthermore, an innovative green roof will help reduce energy consumption and enhance air quality. Apart from The Line, Neom's latest progress video provides details about other projects being constructed within its borders. These include Oxagon, Sindalah, and Trojena - projected to be finished by 2024-2029 respectively - along with plans to build the world's largest green hydrogen plant which should become operational by 2026 - these will contribute to Neom becoming the world's first zero-carbon city. The Oxagon The Oxagon is a sustainable industrial city that emphasizes sustainable practices to support business success while reinvigorating conservation efforts. With advanced automation and connectivity systems, exceptional livability features like high-speed rail and port infrastructure as well as access to natural beauty such as beaches nearby; plus its octagonal design ensures minimal impact on the environment - 95% of its area remains preserved - the Oxagon offers businesses a sustainable edge while reinvigorating conservation. Home of a fully integrated port and logistics hub with the capacity of handling 3.5 million TEUs annually, including efficient offloading/loading facilities, optimized logistics networks, state-of-the-art port control center, and an automated crane - all powered by renewable solar, wind, and green hydrogen energy sources. The octagonal structure is intended to maximize land usage, protect 95% of natural environments, and optimize water usage with its unique shape. Furthermore, its reduced infrastructure needs to create dense urban communities capable of accommodating more residents and businesses. A recent construction progress video released by NEOM shows real-world footage of its massive development project. It provides insight into how its first four destinations Sindalah, Trojena, The Line, and Oxagon are taking shape quickly; further revealing plans for an upcoming YOTEL property in Oxagon which promises sustainable urban living. The City Center Neom City will be situated on the border between Saudi Arabia and Jordan and powered entirely by renewable energy, to become carbon-negative over time. Water production and storage will also be central components. In addition to being car-free, smart city features will prioritize walkability with AI-enabled micromobility; high-speed rail hub travel times should only take 20 minutes end-to-end; it will host top universities, research centers, and hospitals, including world-class neom hospitals offering cutting-edge medical services from robotic surgery to virtual reality telemedicine telemedicine services. Construction on the city is proceeding apace, with multiple projects and partnerships contributing to its development. One such partnership involves ACWA Power International and Air Products who plan on building a green hydrogen plant that will produce clean fuel from wind, sunlight, and empty kand. They expect this facility to become operational within four years using 120 Thyssenkrupp AG electrolyzers. However this ambitious project has caused considerable debate. Critics have voiced concerns regarding human rights in Saudi Arabia as well as local evictions for this development project. Additionally, members of the Huwaitat tribe residing near where this city will be built were relocated as part of this development project - many 20,000 members had to leave behind their ancestral homes to make way for this construction work. It is widely criticized as it disregards indigenous populations without transparency in decision-making processes. The Waterfront Neom's developers aim to make it an international leader in technology and innovation by designing an impressive waterfront that echoes Singapore's Gardens by the Bay with tech companies and an oceanographic research center. Neom is carbon neutral, using renewable energy sources and an innovative tram system to transport its citizens across its streets. Neom will offer free high-speed internet for its residents as well as automated, interactive government services. Residents will enjoy world-class trains, world-renowned entertainment such as wave pools, and best practice healthy living guidelines; its focus will also be heavily placed upon sports and entertainment with world-renowned trains operating through it all the time! Plus neom will serve as a hub of science, innovation, and entrepreneurship with an automated next-generation port providing global connectivity. However, the project has caused much controversy. Some see it as an effort by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to improve his image after journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death and as an effort by him to divert attention away from Saudi Arabia's human rights record. Furthermore, several members of an indigenous Howeitat tribe have been dislocated from their homes or even had them demolished; one member has even been killed while three more received 50-year jail terms for participating.
