Traduction : Thistlewood Lane (by Caedmon)

Dear Neil Gaiman,
You may recall writing an introduction to an anthology of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories some years ago. In that introduction you suggest that Poe's writing is best enjoyed when it is read aloud. After reading some of his stories and poems aloud to myself, I realized that you had an excellent point.
During the month of October, I have made a habit of spending some extra time reading stories and poems by my favorite Gothic author. Instead of reading to myself or asking the nearest person to read to me;* do you have any suggestions for good audio versions of his written works?
Thank you in advance if you are able to answer this question!
*This request has never produced a positive result. In my experience after you reach "a certain age," people no longer wish to read to you.
You need a better group of friends. Ones that like reading aloud to you, anyway.
But until you find them I recommend this:

“You were right, you were right, I was wrong and you were right… now come and get it.”
Aziraphale and Crowley have made a bet about the outcome of their scheme to get Nina and Maggie together. They disagree about who won.
Rated E, probably the strangest love confession I’ve ever written. I would be honored if you’d like to check it out! 💛

I've been watching All Creatures Great and Small (the original with Georgia Tennent's father thank you very much) with my family lately and it's given me a craving for ineffable vets. I know there's a few floating around. Thank you so much in advance! This blog is truly a Someonesend :D
You might be interested in some of the fics on our #animals tag, so check that out. Here are some where one of them in a vet (and one with a pet shop owner, but it's a similar theme)...
Demonic Pet Rescue by Caedmon (G)
When Aziraphale finds a litter of stray kittens in the alley behind his shop, he needs to take them somewhere safe. He takes them to the nearest shelter, where he meets a handsome man taking care of all the cats...
You Just Want Attention by BooknerdMiss (G)
Aziraphale is renting out his second bedroom to university student Anathema Device and her two dogs. After noticing one of the dogs exhibiting some strange behavior, he takes the pup to the vet, where he meets Dr. Crowley.
Human AU. Meet-cute. (And Inspired by true events.)
Fur Get Me Not by bisasterdi (T)
Crowley's been doing just fine since he left London for a slower and quieter life in the country. He's the owner of a pet shop in a small village, spending his days in the shop helping people and their pets and his evenings...well, his evenings are quiet. It's all going fine, and then Adam Young bursts through the door to his shop, his godfather Aziraphale struggling to keep up. Up until the day he first met Aziraphale, Crowley thought he'd live out the rest of his days in solitude. Now? He's not so sure that's what he wants anymore.
Written for the GO-Events Good AUmens AU Fest, to the prompt "Pet Shop".
eden animal hospital by jupiterjazzpartii (T)
Crowley doesn't need this cat. He doesn't need a crush on his cute vet, either.
My Dearest Darling by elf_on_the_shelf (E)
When Crowley first started his day he had no idea that his whole life would be completely upended like that and yet here we are. A couple of hours later and he is now a proud cat owner and in possession of another man's phone number. The cutest, most adorable man Crowley had ever laid eyes on.
What is a poor sod to do but have a complete meltdown?

the children of ansel ( in birth order ) as written about in a journal kept by ansel’s bedside.
eleanor tomlinson as merewina ( merrie ) dragenson nee anseldottir.
and though she came first, she never stood with superiority. her mother’s daughter through & through, merrie became the heart of the pack; beloved sister, cherished friend. it was she who would heal the wounded and feed the hungry. she who would teach the children how to read. though born a wolf, merrie rarely turned and yet, inner wolf was never clearer in the fierce loyalty she displayed everyday. the same loyalty that saw her die at mikael’s hand, shielding families from his onslaught.
joseph morgan as niklaus ( klaus ) mikaelson.
each full moon drew me closer to klaus. it was undeniable; a strong, stubborn bond that i could not shake, no matter how much esther insisted i must. the call of my own was loud & i yearned to be near him, to raise him, to teach him. i waited for the day he would trigger his curse & need me, but that day never came. the pack was never complete without him. i was never complete without him. i should’ve done more. this insert includes many hand - drawn pictures of a young niklaus, sketched by ansel’s own hands.
eysteinn sigurdarson as cadman anselson.
born two minutes & seven seconds before his twin sister, and rest assured, he never let goldiva forget. cadman stood with the confidence of an alpha before he could even truly understand the meaning of the word. i watch him lead warriors into victory after victory, and he did so with a valiance not even i myself possess. he did not marry nor have children, and he believed that made him a stronger leader for it gave him nothing to lose. perhaps he was right. though nothing like his namesake, i feel in my bones father caedmon would’ve felt honour in knowing my son fought with his legacy.
thea soie loch naess as goldiva anseldottir.
and should anyone ever doubt goldiva’s place on the battlefield, they certainly never lived to make that mistake twice. my daughter was born with fire in her eyes & a wolf in her heart / claws already sharpened for war. she embraced the change on her eighteenth birthday, underneath the blood moon and standing side by side cadman, neither ever truly apart from the day they arrived together. i fear cadman struggled without her when she died at mikael’s hand and he did not. it turns out he did have something to lose after all.
harrison osterfield as ricmann ( ric ) anselson.
ricmann was a quiet child and he remained so throughout life. the boy seemed more interested in nature than people, whispering words to the injured birds while nursing their broken wing. he would spend hours with the plants, tending to vegetables. though his name meant the power to rule, he grew up a gentle soul, burdened by the weight of the moon in the sky. i could see the pressure he felt to follow in his sibling’s footsteps. i hope he knew i would’ve loved him regardless. it was a conversation we never got the chance to share before mikael slew us both.
freya allen as hildegyth anseldottir.
the youngest girl of a large family. i think it bothered her sometimes; too often mistaken for a child when she was so desperate to grow up as fast as possible. she became the perfect combination of us all, carrying herself with the softness found in ricmann's heart, but fighting with cadman’s spirit if ever required. overcame obstacles with determination that could only be learnt from goldiva, yet in turn, won many villager’s admiration with that same ability to love i saw in merrie. it was as if we took the best parts of us and gave them to her. she wasn’t just a wolf. she was a force and those that underestimated her, soon realised the error of their ways. hildegyth survived mikael and i watched over her as she raised merewina’s daughter as her own. because of her, our legacy lives on.
unseen in this gifset as beowulf anselson.
our littlest wolf. beowulf came to us as a miraculous surprise, born on a cold winter’s morning, with sif clutching my hand. we loved him dearly in the short time we had together as a family, and though i know he struggled to remember us as i watched him grow from the other side, i do not regret dying to ensure his survival. my approach distracted mikael long enough for brida to run, beowulf tucked safely in her arms. i died knowing he was in safe hands.

I just want to say Whitby Abbey is in fact beautiful and now I sadly cannot recall but is there not a famous piece of Old English poetry associated with it?
Yes! You are correct! And I actually went to the school named after him when I was growing up in whitby!
The poet in question is called Caedmon and I believe he is the earliest named English Poet we are aware of! He's written about in Bede's work and was around in the 7th century.
He was a shepard (or at the very least looked after live stock) and some tales tell that he was illiterate. Regardless of if he was or wasn't, he was apparently allergic to art and music and would avoid any harp performances. But one day he was on the hill watching the monasteries livestock. When he went to bed that evening he had a dream where he was asked to sing and despite protesting he couldn't he eventually did.
The poem fragment we have translated into modern English (this is the one the English Herritage use and the one in the guide books) is:
Praise we the fashioner now of Heaven’s fabric,
The majesty of his might and his mind’s wisdom,
Work of the world-warden, worker of all wonders,
How he the Lord of Glory everlasting
Wrought first for the race of men Heaven as a roof-tree,
Then made he Middle Earth to be their mansion.

I ain't gonna lie, I do wish I had a beta reader for my fic, cuz I worry frequently now that what subtext is in there is getting missed or not written well enough to come across right.
Especially after the incident. Like Ansovald is supposed to be a character who is cruel and violent, and when he's being nice it's supposed to be uncomfortable cuz he always has ulterior motives for his kindness even if they aren't immediately obvious.
Chapter 14 & 15 he acts nice, but the scene in ch. 15 should set you on edge and make you question your perspective like Caedmon. The truth is Ansovald was going to beat Caedmon has Caedmon not done what he'd done, but I want that scene to make you wonder and question.
idk, just since the incident I struggle with confidence in my writing. Like I know I should be more confident, but when you have someone insist to your face your bad guy is the good guy and your protagonist is a catholic mom who deserves it, it kinda ruined my own fic

Last update, Drizzt dropped out of college to not be heir marry his girlfriend, while Willoughby and Einstein were left behind to be Team Rocket. However, despite Willoughby's apparent creepy love for her brother, he was drawn to Vanessa, who moved in with them and became Einstein's fiancee. Caedmon and Tara got old, and Willoughby had sex with lots of men.
We begin this update with a cute shot of two Dorks being dorky together. <3
Segueing smoothly into Wedding Tiemz. Drizzt shows up, starting a trend of Japanesity that infects many of the other guests.
Miss Vampire Wannabe came appropriately attired.
Honourable Greg Almazzzasahidhahhahah-sama and Brady SoAndSo-san also showed up.
Autumn, Drizzt's wife, also came, but from the opposite end of the lot. Wtf? You live together...
I also invited Sheila Santander, who if you recall, is Einstein's ex. I was hoping for drama, but honestly she was very pleasant the whole time. >.>
Here is the wedding scene.
Vanessa stole her wedding dress from Keira Knightely.
Einstein: ...What's taking her so long? I hope she doesn't have cold feet...
Einstein: Well, even if she does, the rest of her is *HOT*.
Vanessa: I promise to love you even longer than Yuna loves Tidus!
Einstein: I promise to love you longer than Seymour loves Yuna!
(PS - SEYMOUR AND YUNA FOREVER WRITTEN IN THE STAAAARS)
LOM LOM LOM
Poor Willoughby. Always the sister, never the bride. :( It seriously made me sad how upset she seemed throughout the wedding.
And then she got up, and instead of applauding, she CROSSED HER ARMS. ;-;
I mean, her face got glitched smiling, but she's crying on the inside.
Note everyone else clapping.
Oblivious to his sister's pain, Einstein stuffs his wife's face.

FIC REC AHEAD and by that I mean, click now for fantastically written story that will zing every emotion.
@caedmonfaith is posting this amazing story, Wedding Planner Stede and Caterer Ed (Blackbeard's Bar and Grill), and it's really (imo) a great take on the idea. Everyone is absolutely in character, especially Buttons and Evelyn, and the prose itself is beautiful. There's a great flow to it, and you're at the end of the chapter before you're ready for it to end.
Twice weekly updates that I have on my calendar (yes, it's THAT good), and Caedmon has the story finished, it's just in editing, so no worries about it being abandoned! You won't regret checking it out, and while you're there, give Fine Things a read, too. You won't be disappointed!

Hi! So I’m a complete newbie at literature, my program made all of us take it, not a bad thing but! I have no clue how to analyse stuff!!! Any tips will be helpful regarding how to analyse novel and writing an essay based on it, thanks!!!
this has been sitting in my inbox for a month bc i kept meaning to sit down and give it a good and proper answer and i would forget. so here it is. your answer. also i made this to reflect all literature in general, not just novels.
How To Analyze Literature (a General Advice Guide, Not Actual Instructions)
what is it?
who wrote it?
this is important because it gives you clues as to what the perspective of the author/narrator is going to be.
when was it written?
similar to the above, it offers clues on perspective. is the format of the poem in a particular style of that era? does the work hold historical importance? etc
why was it written/what is the purpose?
did the author have a socio-political goal? or was it for personal pleasure? shakespeare wrote for entertainment, hunger games is a criticism of the government, etc.
what is the medium?
ie. is it a novel, a poem, a play, etc. these all make a difference because it leads into the next question:
who is the expected/targeted audience?
for a historical work, was this written for people who were literate (wealthy/clergy), or people who weren’t (poor)? a novel is harder memorize than a poem, but a novel in verse is easier than a novel in prose.
what is the language?
prose vs. verse
verse (rhyming, or has a set rhythm/meter) is easier to remember than extended prose (not verse), and was often used for literature targeted at illiterate/poor people because it was easier to remember. most verse media is written down by someone who was literature, either at their own creation or as a historical record (shakespeare writing verse for active memorization & performance, versus beade writing down caedmon’s hymn for historical record)
is the work translated?
some people think this is less important than other questions, but i dont, and i think most multilingual people will agree. language is limited, and words that exist in one often do not in another, and so things are lost in translation. what are the limitations of this x-to-x translation? who was the translator? why was it translated? was the translation politically motivated, and therefore at risk of being changed? ie. the bible being translated from latin into german by martin luther was politically motivated, and all bible translations are politically motivated, which is why there are so many different versions.
what literary techniques are used?
does the work contain a specific grammatical structure?
is this a consequence of translation? era style? specific meter? why might these be important, and how do they change the perception or understanding of the work?
does the work contain specific stylistic techniques? i
alliteration? hyperbole? anastrophe? how are these techniques used in the media? what does the alliteration do in terms of changing the mood? what does the hyperbole stand for? if a play, how would these techniques change or alter the way this section is performed?
what themes, tropes, or symbols are included in this work?
what ideas, phrases, or items are repeated throughout the work? one of the themes of othello is infidelity, so there are constant motifs of jealously/envy in the language.
how do i write an essay on this?
include everything i just said! depending on your essay, you’re going to want the following basics introduction, body, conclusion.
i typically try to include at least three body sections, so three different areas of support for my thesis. you thesis is arguably the most important section of your paper. you reader should be able to tell exactly what your paper is about just from those 1-2 lines. i typically make my intro 2 paragraphs, bc im long winded and if its one paragraph it often ends up extending over the first page. my areas arent paragraphs but sections that include multiple paragraphs for better readability for this reason. my essays typically look like this:
media background (who wrote it, what is it, basic plot, etc)
thesis
thesis support section #1
why this is a support
quote 1, analysis
quote 2, analysis
thesis support section #2
same as section 1
thesis support section #3
same as 1 & 2
conclusion
restate your thesis, but more specific
add more support areas and/or more quotes to adjust the length of your paper, but i dont suggest going below 3 supports, and you’ll almost never get full marks for having 2 support areas, much less 1.

I would be honored if you’d like to check it out!

Hi there! Do you have any fake relationship ineffable husbands fics? I know that's a bit vague, but I'm not quite sure where to start.
Hello! You can start with out plentiful #fake/pretend relationship tag. Here are more fics to add to the overflowing collection...
Rent-A-Boyfriend by Caedmon (G)
Crowley has been harboring a massive crush on Mr. Fell, the man who comes into his shop once a week to buy flowers, for months. They always make a little conversation, and the exchange leaves Crowley charged for the whole week. But this week, when Mr. Fell asks Crowley what he's doing this weekend, Crowley admits that his twentieth high school reunion is coming up - and, in a fit of daring, he asks Mr. Fell to go with him. Then he offers to pay Mr. Fell to go with him.
Secret Affairs by angelsnuffbox (T)
“What’re you even doing still up? Aren’t you getting married tomorrow?” Crowley enquired. Suspicion wove itself into his tone. “One would think that you’d wish to be fully awake for something like that.”
In response, Aziraphale pursed his lips and mumbled.
“Aziraphale…” came the familiar admonishing voice that curled annoyance down the pit of his stomach. “Mind telling me what you’re doing?”
Aziraphale scowled at his boots. “M’running ‘way.”
“You’re what?”
“I am running away!” he blurted out. “Lord Helston is an insufferable man whose very presence wears my patience to a sheet!”
-
Written for the prompt "regency fake relationship"
Cravings by EdosianOrchids901 (T)
When Aziraphale’s holiday plans are in jeopardy, Crowley suggests a solution. If the event is only open to married couples, they’ll just pretend to be married! What could possibly go wrong?
Side Mission by KannaOphelia (T)
Some time after Warlock's ninth birthday, Aziraphale and Crowley have realised they made a mistake, and tracked the real Antichrist down to Tadfield. Two years to save the world is more than enough, right?
Except everyone keeps assuming they are a married couple, and it's almost too much for a hopelessly in love demon to bear. Especially when Aziraphale suggests they might as well go along with it.
Of Size and other Matters by LCwrites (E)
When Crowley gets a random text from an unknown number, he thinks it must be a joke at first. Turns out it's by a rather amusing stranger who might have an interesting matter at hand.
Aziraphale just wants to get an upcoming function over with and not have people trying to set him up with anyone. At least whoever accidentally received his message seems to take the mishap with humour.
A Model Guardian by Fuuma_san (E)
Crowley is a self-sufficient model on the verge of stardom. They clawed their way up all by themselves and the very last thing they want is some cream puff bodyguard their agency hired following them around constantly. Pretending to be their boyfriend at work so they don't get a reputation as a Diva. Watching over them. Caring for them.
But then it turns out "Fell" was not even his real name. Was it all fake? Would someone like him ever want someone like them?

AS A BRIT THANKS for mentioning regional accents!!! It would have been so varied especially at major cities and ports like it still is to this day.
If we're to look at "Olde English", the Black Country accent is The Most like the original to this day! It still retains a lot of linguistic similarities and I highly doubt he sounds like that! Seriously everyone, look up The Black Country Museum on YouTube & Tik Tok. That is the closest. Lmfao. For example, that is how Shakespeare would have sounded and how his plays SHOULD be performed. Unfortunately rich people have performed them in received pronunciation and taken the original sound away from it.
The writer of Simon is blatantly an American who thinks we all speak like the Queen and he frankly, knows next to nothing about our history. Many of his fans are American and won't know these differences because they haven't experienced it. I can't blame them. I'm from the North and the North alone has many many accents! There is no "English accent", just many many regional accents & received pronunciation that everyone knows as "English". I've had American people ask me of I'm Scottish. I'm Scouse. 😂
Also the mummy dust wasn't just eaten, we also used it for paint. Gross. Disgusting and disrespectful stuff. Glad to see somebody talking about it tho, to the other anon I tip my hat!
Okay let’s be clear, that video was NOT of Old English. Old English is, for all practical purposes, a different language than modern English (Caedmon’s Hymn is written in Old English, if you want an idea of what it’s like) . That video was dated from the 14th century, which makes it Middle English - something you would think Simon would know.
Shakespeare was also writing in Middle English, though.
Although it’s hard to tell through the voice filter, the person reading Simon’s work does seem to have an English accent of some sort, but I think they drop it sometimes?
I also find it curious that he seems to have retained that accent rather than adopting an American one after spending several centuries in the US.
