say, i heard you reblog a post about role playing games. do you happen to know of any ones that i, a beginner, could feasibly get into in this day and age? i tried DnD but a combination of not having anybody to play with (whether irl or online) and a dissatisfaction with low level boringness kind of made it fizzle out for me
oh hey an ask from 3 months ago that I didn't even see. hi.
ANYWAY. First things first, i cannot recommend @theresattrpgforthat enough. Ain't nobody better at recommending rpgs than that blog right there. Now, on to my thoughts.
If you want a DnD-like rpg, Pathfinder 2nd Edition is gonna be my first recommendation. It's harder to find games for on account of being significantly less popular than dnd5e but it's probably the 2nd most popular game. It's also completely free, with everything being hosted on https://2e.aonprd.com/. It's got everything except adventures, those ya gotta buy. For the next 10 days, there's a humble bundle that includes PDFs of lots of the pre-remaster legacy books, and includes a couple adventures, including a whole adventure path going from level 1 to 20. As a whole, the game is different to dnd but it's recognizable. Big fan myself, and paizo isn't a bunch of pricks. The setting is also super gay. There's a potion of trans your gender, and one of the main religions in the world is the worship of 3 gods in lesbian polycule.
Ironsworn: probably my favorite RPG, period. (also has a space version, that works the same way). It is narrative focused, and designed for solo play or in groups with no GM. Works just as well by yourself, as a duo, in a small group, or in a traditional way with a few players and a GM. It's structured around it's vow system. Your character makes a vow, you decide how difficult that vow should be to accomplish, and as you do things that advance it, you mark progress. Eventually, you make a roll to try and fulfill the vow, with the difficulty determined by how much progress you've made. If you fail that roll, it's bad. Cool thing is that just about everything works that way. Undertaking a journey, delving a dungeon, fighting a dude, it's all handled with the same system. It's a game about perseverance and struggle and relationships, both with people and with places. also very fun to play for writing practice. It's mechanics are rooted in it's setting, but there's no reason you couldn't play it in basically any setting. the youtube channel Me, Myself, And Die is, essentially, Critical Role But It's Solo RPGs, and he did a great season where he played Ironsworn, check it out. Also, Basement Fort on youtube did a duo playthrough. I've only seen the first episode but it seems like a fun watch, as well as showing off duo gameplay.
the Witcher RPG: i haven't played this myself or even looked at the books yet, but everything I've heard about this game has me super excited about it. the general consesus seems to be "yo this is wayyyy better than I thought it would be, why aren't more people playing this, what the fuck". If somebody more familiar wants to talk about it, that'd be dope.
gonna ramble about the rest much less, LIGHTNING ROUND OF RECOMMENDATIONS
Dungeon World: same genre as dnd, but much less crunchy gameplay. Much easier to learn.
Kids On Bikes: it's Stranger Things but as a ttrpg.
Call of Cthulhu: get spooky, idiot. The players are investigators unraveling some mystery or another, and trying to keep their sanity in the face of some cosmic bullshit.
Lancer: it's about mechs! closer to anime-style mechs than battletech style, from what I can tell. I've heard good things.
Vampire: The Masquerade: you will NEVER guess what this is about. It's a classic, it's great, it pretty much redefined the way I think vampires should work. The new version of Werewolf: The Apocalypse is coming soon, and I'm real hyped for that, too.
Shadow Of The Demon Lord: my understanding is that this game is basically "DnD 5e, but good".

Witcher Fun Facts from the Table-Top Role-playing Game
These facts are about as canon as the lore in the game or in the reward trees for the gwent app as it is put out by CDPR. These are the things that stuck out to me the most, there are obviously more facts than these in the TTRPG.
• There is a sentient species living north of Kovir & Poviss despite it being widely believed that habitation farther north is impossible. The only way people on the Continent know this species exists is because some of their art will occasionally show up in Kovir & Poviss. It is not known whether those living there are human or something else. (If I was in charge of the TTRPG, the species living up there would be orcs because according to the wiki, Elder Speech was developed by Sapkowski for use by elves and orcs. Obviously orcs never showed up in the series but having them live up there would be a nice Easter egg.)
• The man that decapitates Yennefer's horse at the beginning of Witcher 3 is from Gemmera, a vassal of Nilfgaard and the sword he is weilding is called a torrwr
• It is implied that Cat witchers sleep four to a bed while they are at the cat caravan as the wagon type they use has an interior that is described as having one large bed and one small piece of furniture (a wardrobe, dresser, table, etc.) but can comfortably sleep four.
• Prosthetics designed specifically for witcher and sorceress use exist
• No ship from the Continent has ever returned from Ofier (which is located past Skellige for whatever reason I thought it was east of Zerrikania but I think that's because I'm a dumbass looking back) though whether that is "because they perished or because they prefer Ofier is not known."
• It's implied there are witchers in Ofier, which means that either Ofieri mages had the same idea as mages from the Continent or that witchers from the Continent traveled to Ofier (if I was in charge, the Ofieri witchers would be the Crane witchers from that non-Sapkowski short story collection)
• Mutagens were applied to women by the Manticore witchers but whether it worked or not is "inconclusive." Note that the TTRPG book is written from the POV of a Temerian dwarf and a scholar from Oxenfurt so weather or not these mutagens took is genuinely up in the air.
• Memories of one's life before being taken by a witcher directly affect how likely a trainee is to survive the mutation process. If you do not have memories before your life at whatever witcher headquarters, you are more likely to die during mutations.
• Geralt is not the first witcher to be famous and have ballads sung about him. There was a Griffin witcher called Raven who had a similar level of fame.

Witcher TTRPG night! We fought drowners in the sewers - with no one injured or dying, for the first time!
And then Yulia (halfling crafter) realized that she would have to swim through the sewer water to get to that passage, noped out and silently went back to the room below to ransack the laboratory and make a boat out of the main table.
Meanwhile Korath (the mage) went hmm im not stepping in that! And figured he could break through the wall (and he did! fdjlfgjklg)
Doors pose many problems to adventurers, but not these ones fl;jkfgkl;dg

I've been busy with work and had a bit of an art block, but I did manage to finish this big "draw your squad" piece with our Witcher ttrpg party (including characters we've swapped out for new ones along the way)
This is the longest campaign I've ever taken part in (both storywise and irl), and I love our characters a lot! We have my sorceress, a witcher, bard, druid, "legitimate merchant", mercenary, and two doctors, though not all are in play at once. And a companion wolf!

A Crow Among Sparrows
A Witcher OC Roleplay Blog

“Gather round now,” came the calm voice of the bard as he pulled up a chair, a smile on his face as the patrons young came to sit before him.  He wore a thick blue coat that seemed to have seen many more seasons than lined his own face.  The green eyes bright with mirth but hiding a deep wild sadness that he obviously did his best to push aside. “Who here knows what a Witcher is?”
“A monster!”  One voice piped up with an agreeance of murmurs from the other children.
The bard tilted his head thoughtfully, listening to the gibbering of the kids before perking up as he pointed to one of them.  “You!  What did you say?”
The other children stopped talking and turned to look at a small girl who looked suddenly very shy as the red grew in her face to match her hair.  She tried her best to whisper and hide.
“Come on no, don’t be afraid.  Say it again.”  The bard insisted, his smile welcoming as he leaned forward.
Gulping hard she would speak louder now, her face growing more crimson by the second.  “They’re not monsters.”
“Why?”
“Because,” she looked at the other kids again and then back into the green eyes.  “They kill them.”
The bard nodded sagely at her words and sat up straight again.  “You are correct.  They hunt the monsters.”
“My da says they bring all the bad stuff,” a boy interjected.
“Bad stuff?  Like what?”  The green eyes gave the young girl reprieve as he turned to the boy now, arching a brow at him.
“Like..like...monsters!” The child hesitated at first being caught on the spot, the others giggling before answering the question as well.
“Vampires!”
“Wolfmen!”
“Skeletons!”
“Milkmaids!”
“Dragons!”
The bard nodded again as he mentally took in their words, tapping his chin in deep thought.  “Wow, that’s a lot of ‘bad’ stuff.  So how do you get rid of them?”
The kids stopped as they thought about it.
“You,” the crimson faced girl again hesitated but found herself emboldened by the bards calling her initially.  “You call a Witcher.”
Smile wide with bits of off-white teeth showing, the bard would look back to them as even a few of the older crowd were turning to watch now.  “Ah there you go now.  You call a witcher to deal with the monsters.”
“And then you toss em-,” a little began to the first bars to a VERY familiar song.
“Shh!” A nearby child ribbed him with a frown as the story was set to begin.
Rising up to his feet the blue coated bard would crack his neck and stretch his arms above him, ready to begin a long night of story telling.  “You all are very intelligent and well thought out minds for sure.  And you all seem to know your stuff on these monster slayers for I’m sure you’ve heard of the famous ones here.”
A plethora of nods followed as they watched him.  “Good so we can cut the backstory and dive right in the meat of it.”
The bard sat back again on his stool before leaning forward on his knees as he whispered.  “Let me tell you about a crow...”

Welcome to ‘A Crow Among Sparrows’, a Witcher OC roleplay blog.  Here I have decided to make my own tales adjacent to the tales of Geralt and other fan favorites from the Witcher series.  Along with the Witcher series I have used a lot of the ideas from the Ravenloft setting to add new characters and ideas to my own interpretation of the Witcher verse.  From the Vistani, to vampires, and all kinds of other dark creatures of the night I love to delve into the supernatural horror fantasy.
Is it accurate?  No.  Is it ‘lore’ abiding?  Not really.  Do I use a lot of D&D stuff to add more fluff?  Yes.  Do I mix up a lot of my own canon?  All the time.   Do I enjoy writing about spooky monster hunting within an amazing settings?  Yes I do.
So I hope you enjoy what I put out there, maybe interact with your own characters, and we all hope that I keep going with this for awhile.

witcher cookbook
not in a sense that there are receipts you can recreate in your own kitchen but more
cookbook: on the path, so you find yourself without much of regular rations but there's plenty of drowners you just killed, and you start to consider how much truth is in the saying "meat is meat"?
here's how to cook water hag, 7 surprisingly tasty things you can do with leshy's bark, rotfiends: just don't
i can see it as ttrpg dlc, alchemy as the cooking skill, some small buffs if you eat correctly prepared monster, herbs as seasonings, maybe some sort of overly complicated table for when you want to experiment in kitchen and just start throwing whatever into the pot
