Favourite Character Bingo - 2023
Characters I first encountered in 2023 (not necessarily part of media released in that year).
These are intended to be ordered loosely according to genre, moving from classic to contemporary horror, sci-fi horror, thriller horror, on to drama, comedy, then comic/cartoon and fantasy. Naturally, plenty of these don't quite stay in their own prescribed mould and could be considered fitting for another genre, but this is MY PARTY and I make the rules >:(
The hardest thing I've ever done may just be forcing myself to choose only one Baldur's Gate 3 character. If this was ordered by fondness for the characters, Astarion would be up top, but it's not and I'm petty so he's last and least.
As may surprise no-one, the prevailing trends are trickster archetypes, gothic looks, autism coding, and sympathetic or misunderstood status and/or rebellion. Also Billy Crystal is there.
Listing below the cut!
Countess Marya Zeleska - Dracula's Daughter (1936)
Mrs. Danvers - Rebecca (1940)
Lady Sylvia Marsh - The Lair of the White Worm (1988)
Nevena - You Won't Be Alone (2022)
Kim Diamond - Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000)
Brynn AND the Aliens - No One Will Save You (2023) (as an interacting set of characters, not necessarily as interesting actors singularly)
Violet and Corky - Bound (1996)
Andrea "Dre" Greene - Swarm (2023)
Gunther - V/H/S/85 (2023) - Goth boy who saves the day through his prescient lucid dreaming and rebels against being falsely cast as the villain, hell yeah.
Willard - Willard (1971) - would be in the top three if this were sorted by level of favoritism.
Gerd Wiesler - The Lives of Others/Das Leben der Anderen (2006)
Primo - Big Night (1996)
Walter Tattersall - Yellowjackets (2021-) - of call the cast and I fixate on THIS GUY. Got me again, Elijah!
Willie Jack Sampson - Reservation Dogs (2021)
Barabara Howard and Melissa Schemmenti - Abbott Elementary (2022-) - My god these two gripped me. Just give them an entire season. Gregory can be there too.
Gregory Eddie - Abbott Elementary (2022-)
Sally Albright and Harry Burns - When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Raven - Teen Titans: Beast World (2023-) - solely for her design; I am practically floating at the departure from emo/punk Raven and a return to a more whimsical gothic look. Another artist draws her looking like Billie Lourd and I'm into it.
Sharon Apple - Macross Plus (1994/1995)
Spider-Punk/Hobie Brown - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
The Medicine Seller/Kusuriuri/薬売り - Mononoke/モノノ怪 (2007)
Astarion - Baldur's Gate 3 (2023) - He's my best friend, he's my pal, he's my homeboy, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good time boy, and I've been so excited for you all to see his whole schtick since way back in 2020.
Runner Up's: Shin Hati (Ahsoka), Mirror Woman (The Art of Mirrors) - don't ask, Nearly everyone else form Baldur's Gate 3 but especially all the companions and the Emperor oopsies I'm a sucker, Padraic (Banshees of Inisherin), Mary (Carnival of Souls), everyone from Dungeon Meshi but esepecially Marcille and Senshi, Lorne Malvo (Fargo), Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell), Brigitte (Ginger Snaps), The Harppy (Harpya), Joel and Ellie (The Last of Us; kept out because of the Zionist higher plot), Dracula and Clemens (The Last Voyage of the Demeter), Martin (Martin), Izzy Hands (Our Flag Means Death), Father Amorth (The Pope's Exorcist), Deer Lady (Reservation Dogs), Elora Danan (Reservation Dogs), Adam (SAW), Carl (Skyman), Kris (Solaris), Kurt Kunkle (Spree), Sammi Curr and Eddie (Trick or Treat), Bitch Cat (V/H/S/94),

SUBLIME CINEMA #629 - THE LIVES OF OTHERS
When asked in an interview how he prepared for the role of GDR Stasi captain Wiesler, the late Ulrich Muhe simply said ‘I remembered’. He was an East German actor and activist who himself was spied on and betrayed by a former wife; he didn’t have to travel far to evoke the perfect performance he delivered in this masterpiece.

i don’t need to argue that the lives of others (2006) is a beautifully composed, carefully acted, and deeply impactful piece of film. the film is well-awarded and well-known enough that i won’t waste my time explaining why it is excellent cinema. however, i would like to look at the way this film handles redemption and forgiveness, particularly in the way that it ends. the film received pushback from some, particularly citizens of the former ddr, for making its hero a stasi man; however, in terms of narrative, this film resists making wiesler a real hero, or giving him and the audience the catharsis and forgiveness the audience expects from this kind of drama film. wiesler is the ultimate good apple, the idealistic, sincere, thoughtful protagonist who comes to realize how socially and spiritually corroding and how ultimately corrupt the stasi and their world are; he uses, risks, and ultimately sacrifices his position for the good of a pair of ordinary people; he is, in many respects, given as textbook a redemption arc as you could hope for. and the narrative punishes him for it. rather than end the film with wiesler publicly saving the day, perhaps through a car chase and shootout, and being recognized for his goodness, he makes his clumsy sacrifice off-camera, and, on-camera, we see that his actions still kill half of the people he tried to protect. the film pulls him forward through seven more years of ignominy—ignominy that his work in the stasi brought on him—without recognition or catharsis or any confirmation of redemption. even when his good deeds are discovered, the man he saved chooses not to interact with him. indeed, the ending of the film almost reminds me of the ending of a taxi driver (2017) in its non-catharsis, albeit in this case it is more purposeful and impactful. this choice to withhold reward, recognition, forgiveness, and catharsis from the character who ought to be a hero not only heightens the green-and-grey paletted realism of the film but mitigates the implications of lionizing a theoretical good apple in the stasi. even the best man in that system, the film argues, cannot do much good, and any good he does can hardly buy back the weight of all the harmful things he must do to enter the system. i deeply enjoyed this sensitive and nuanced picture painted by the lives of others (2006), and i would highly recommend it

Dear Vidder Letter 2023-24
Thank you so much for making me a vid! In this letter, I’ve included general preferences for style and then optional specifics for each fandom.
Vids: I really enjoy character studies, ensemble vids, critiques, dance vids, and vids that show the development of a relationship (whether romantic or not). Themes I particularly like are foils/doubles/doppelgangers, crises of faith (not specifically religious), and connection, but don’t feel tied to any of these.
Music: Whatever kind of music you think will work with the source is good for me! I prefer lyric-guided vids, but don’t have a genre preference otherwise. If the song is not in English, I would prefer a translation in the subtitles so I can understand it. For audio added over the music, I prefer it to be used only during instrumental parts, not over lyrics. I also prefer it to not be the focus of the vid. Pronouns/gendered words within the song matching the gender of portrayed characters does not matter to me, although I would appreciate a heads-up about it for nonbinary/trans characters. I would also request that you don’t use music from the source unless otherwise specified (eg. “There is Power in a Union” from Pride).
Visuals: I would prefer a minimum of flashing lights (I find them overwhelming), but quick cuts are fine. I do not like text on screen, but highly request subtitles (default Youtube style is preferred, but if they need to be hardcoded, that’s fine as long as they don’t move and are easy to read).
2001: A Space Odyssey & 2010: The Year We Made Contact: I really love HAL.
Crimes of the Future: I am particularly drawn to the way that this movie engages with the trifecta of disability/art/sex, but I would be happy with literally anything, in any tone.
The Lives of Others: I am a sucker for themes of surveillance and true believers becoming disillusioned, so I like Wiesler’s arc. Additionally, if you would like to use “Sonata for a Good Man” from the soundtrack, go right ahead.
His House: I would be happy with any kind of vid for this movie, especially one that focuses on (and potentially expands on) any specific theme, such as assimilation, the ghosts (and specifically Nyagak), and memory.
The Prince: This play gave me a lot of trans feelings. I would prefer a vid focused on Hotspur and her journey, but would be happy with any other character/duo/ensemble as well.
Ravenous: I am very into the homoerotic cannibalism aspect of this movie.
Rope: As with Ravenous, I’m very into the gay subtext. I also enjoy watching Phillip’s impending meltdown.
Station Eleven: I love stories about stories, and this show feels very true to how I engage with fandom. I really, really liked the portrayal of the initial pandemic, as well as the web of connections between characters. I would be very happy with an ensemble vid, but I also love all of the characters individually, so go whatever direction you feel drawn towards.
Sputnik: I especially like the symbiotic alien plot, and also Tatyana. (This film is unrelated to the Sputnik satellite program; it’s set in the 1980s.)
Zero Patience: This movie is very silly and very angry and I like it quite a lot. Like Station Eleven, I’m drawn to Zero Patience’s story about stories framing and how it pushes back against the destructive myth of patient zero.

It's actually hard to pick a wrestling "character" as a favourite-- as deeply fond as I am of the long form entire life nature of the wrestling storytelling, part of the beauty of the art is that any "story" is mired in the shoot mess of real life, so it's hard to scale those next to the way I feel about a really crisply written character in much shorter forms. That said, a few of the stories that hit me in a sort of vibes based sense as being really good:
- CM Punk, his story from his return to AEW up until the dog collar match.
- Katsuyori Shibata, his prodigal son "return to New Japan" arc
- KENTA, his 2019 G1 Climax betrayal
Fondest shoutout to the Golden Lovers who are an absolute gem in every sense to the wrestling storytelling world :")

Ulrich Mühe in The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, 2006)
Cast: Ulrich Mühe, Martina Gedeck, Sebastian Koch, Ulrich Tukur, Thomas Thieme, Hans-Uwe Bauer, Volkmar Kleinert, Matthias Brenner, Charly Hübner. Screenplay: Florian Henckel von Donnersmark. Cinematography: Hagen Bogdanski. Production design: Silke Buhr. Film editing: Patricia Rommel. Music: Stéphan Mucha, Gabriel Yared.
Amid the almost universal acclaim, including a best foreign-language film Oscar, for Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Lives of Others, there were some complaints from residents of the former East Germany that the writer-director was not as hard on his Stasi snoop, Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe), as he should have been. The movie as a whole is chilling -- well-plotted and well-acted -- but I'm not entirely convinced by Wiesler's change of heart regarding the people he's surveiling: the playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and his lover, the actress Christa-Marie Sieland (Martina Gedeck). At the start of the film, when we first see Wiesler teaching a class to Stasi-spy hopefuls, he's the perfect cold gray participant in a monstrous system of internal domestic espionage. But later, as he learns not only that the motive for spying on Dreyman and Sieland is not merely political but also sexual -- the minister of culture, Bruno Hempf (Thomas Theime) wants Dreyman eliminated so he can have Sieland all to himself -- he begins to be disillusioned with his work. And after a friend of Dreyman's, the blacklisted theater director Albert Jerska (Volkmar Kleinert), commits suicide and Dreyman sits down at the piano to play a piece of music -- composed for the film by Gabriel Yared -- called Sonata for a Good Man that Jerska had given him, Wiesler betrays the first real emotion we see from him in the film: A tear rolls down his cold gray face. Donnersmarck has said that he was inspired by Lenin's statement -- referred to in one point in the film -- that he had to give up listening to music like Beethoven's "Appassionata" sonata because it humanized him, distracting him from the task of revolution. On the other hand, we have all heard the stories of Nazi concentration camp commandants who read Schiller and Goethe and listened to Mozart and Schubert and were never deterred from their horrendous work by it. The flaw in Donnersmarck's film, I think, is that despite Mühe's brilliant performance as Wiesler, we never get enough of his backstory to suggest why he should be suddenly so vulnerable to sentiment. How could he have risen in the ranks of the Stasi to the point that he became not only a trusted agent but also an instructor of future agents if he has this key weakness? On the other hand, it's not a crippling flaw, thanks to exceptional performances and well-handled suspense.
