would it be silly if I write new Lupe lore for this fic and move her farther West bc I wanna talk about desert. I know that it's all headcanon and also that I'm writing an alternate timeline to my other fics but I did establish pretty clearly in the absurdcapybara body of work that Lupe is from Dallas. But the thing is Dallas is so far east of the desert and I think that Jess would like desert. these aren't really genuine questions I just like the desert I wanna write about the desert

Today, Cage The Elephant, the GRAMMY® Award winning rock band release Neon Pill, their 6th studio album. The band recently shared “Metaverse,” the latest single off Neon Pill, which follows recent singles from the new album including “Good Time,” “Out Loud” and “Neon Pill,” which scored the band their 11th #1 song on Billboard’s Alternative Chart.

Cage The Elephant’s 47-date North American US tour, produced by Live Nation, will kick off on June 20 in Salt Lake City with shows in cities including Seattle, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto and New York City (full dates below), with support from Young The Giant & Bakar on most dates. From their humble beginnings in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Cage The Elephant have gone on to become one of the generation’s premier rock bands. They have earned dozens of Gold, Platinum, and Multiplatinum certifications, tallied over 5 billion streams, and notched eleven #1 records on Alternative Radio and 5 #1 records on Triple A Radio. Side by side of barrel aged stouts with vanilla. First up was Void Shaker, from Funky Buddha out of Oakland Park, FL. Aged in bourbon barrels from High West Distillery out of Park City, UT. This was really good, a roasty flavor with vanilla with a slightly boozy finish. Next up was Parabolita from Firestone Walker out of Paso Robles, CA. This is a barrel aged stout vanilla beans, cocoa nibs and sea salt. This was excellent, one of the best stouts I’ve had lately. A caramel ish flavor with hints of vanilla& chocolate.

Historia de vida:

Lupita Alvarez y su familia emigraron a Los Estados Unidos hace mucho tiempo para darle una mejor oportunidad a sus hijos Camila, Santiago, Alberto y Elena. Ahí como unos mexicanos indocumentados sufrieron mucho, pero lograron salir a delante y sobre todo lograron que los 4 hijos fueran a buenas universidades en las carreras que todos eligieron. Camila la mayor se había graduado como diseñadora de vestuario lo que la llevo a trabajar en Broadway como vestuarista lugar donde conoció a Aaron Jefferson, hijo de unos de los mas grandes directores de la industria y chico con el cual no tardó en entablar una relación y 5 años después casarse para a los escasos dos años de matrimonio tener a sus dos gemelos Bernardo (el mayor por solo 2 minutos) y María chicos a los cuales nombraron así por los personajes de la obra West Side Story en la cual sus padres trabajaban en esa época.

Camilia y Aaron les inculcaron a sus hijos desde muy pequeños el amor al teatro musical y en cuanto pudieron andar y hablar los inscribieron en clases de canto y baile puesto que su mayor sueño era que ambos fueran estrellas de Broadway (cosa que con el paso de los años también fue el sueño de los chicos). Tanto Maria como Bernardo poseían mucho talento para ese tipo de arte, pero nunca se imaginaron que Maria tuviera un don excepcional pues era una bruja. Esto lo descubrieron cuando después de haberse mudado a Londres cuando sus hijos tenían 8 años por una oportunidad laboral de Aaron, la joven empezaba a hacer cosas raras como levitar los objetos a su alrededor y no fue hasta que llegó a la edad de los 11 años que una carta de Hogwarts arribó informándoles que su pequeña era una bruja. Este hecho había logrado que su hermano y ella (antes inseparables) se pelearan puesto que el chico estaba celoso de que su hermana tuviera un don que el no pero cuando ambos tenían 13 años termino por aceptarlo y la relación se compuso.

Vida escolar:

Al entrar Hogwarts Maria fue seleccionada en Hufflepuff y no tardó en hacerse conocida entre los tejones por pasarla cantando en cualquier situación o por encontrarse ya fuera Tap o Ballet pues a pesar de estar lejos de casa la chica seguía practicando. Y también se hizo conocida por a pesar de ser una chica considerada de la clase alta no era arrogante o pedante si no mas bien por ser una chica dulce y siempre dispuesta a ayudar exceptuando claro cuando se trataba de su talento para el canto y la actuación ramas en las cuales estaba segura de ser la mejor. Incluso mas de una vez trato de convencer a Sprout que la dejara hacer un club de teatro musical pero dado que realmente ninguno de sus compañeros conocía ese tipo de mundo dudaban que fuera a funcionar. Lo único que incomodaba a Maria era el hecho que al ser una hija de muggles y tener lo que llamaban un acento extraño gracias a su ascendencia mexicana fue blanco de burla de muchos Slytherins puristas haciéndola incluso llorar pero nunca demostrárselo pues siempre deseaba mostrarse como alguien fuerte.

Vida actual:

Actualmente Maria se encuentra cumpliendo sueño de ser estrella de Broadway momento solo en Londres puesto no se siente lista para separarse de su familia y emigrar a su país de origen. Al inicio de la guerra no quería involucrarse pues todo aquello la afecta demasiado y en muchas ocasiones le han hecho querer ser solo una chica muggle como toda su familia, pero con todo los acontecimientos la chica ahora apoya a la Orden. Aparte de sus clases normales sigue tomando ballet, tap, canto e incluso de varios instrumentos y unos cursos de diseño pues también cree que sería una gran idea montar algún día su propia obra desde cero.

Personalidad:

Maria es lo que se considera una hija de papi en muchos aspectos y en cierta forma lo es pues al ser la única hija de los Jefferson-Alvarez es la consentida de Aaron pero a pesar de esto suele ser una chica muy dulce y cariñosa y nadie la considera una pedante, esto es por las circunstancias que ser una hija de muggles en esta época le ha dejado. Su hermano la describe como su pequeña princesa y su rayo de sol y Maria es muy apegada a él, motivo por el cual la pelea que tuvieron cuando se enteraron que era una bruja le rompió el corazón e hizo todo lo posible para arreglar las cosas. Es muy ambiciosa y siempre logra lo que se propone incluso se puede decir que es una chica muy necia.

Es muy leal con sus amigos pero sobre todo con su familia y esta sumamente orgullosa de sus raíces latinas motivo por el cual es común encontrarla hablando en español especialmente cuando esta enojada. A pesar de que le encantan los beneficios de ser una bruja (tales como poder cambiarse de ropa más rápido o empacar muchas cosas en una maleta pequeña) dadas las circunstancias de la guerra mágica Maria desearía ser una chica común y corriente y esto también la ha llevado a no querer involucrarse en la guerra mágica a pesar de no estar de acuerdo con las matanzas y demás eventos.

Maria también suele ser descrita como una romántica empedernida y busca su gran amor estilo Broadway o estilo la historia de sus padres y no duda que algún día llegara su príncipe azul con el cual podrá cantar y bailar y sobre todo ser feliz y sobre todo sabe que será alguien que la acepte tal como es y sobre todo alguien que su familia aceptara puesto que ella siempre busca la aprobación de cada uno de los miembros de su familia pero especialmente su padre y su hermano.

Milagro hadn’t said a word since they left El Paso. The Zeta tubes scared her, he knows it, but she’s too proud to say anything else. Khaji offered to sedate her, which Jaime quickly vetoed. The beetle still informs his host of each spike of her heart rate.

“Hey, Mocosa,” Jaime squeezes his sister’s hand, “¿Estás bien?”

Milagro nods, but her grip doesn’t loosen. When the elevator doors open, Jaime pulls her to the side. She can’t meet his eyes, even when he kneels down. Her big brother tilts her head up.

“Milagro, digas me.”

“…I’m scared, Jaime…” It’s not the first time she’s said that. Not even the first time today, but her voice hasn’t shaken like that, “What if they don’t like me?”

A small smile plays on his face, “You remember my friend, Bart, right? Redhead that talks too much?”

“Yeah, why?” Milagro sniffles.

“He’s been talking about you to his cousins, Jai and Irey. They’re really excited to meet you.” Jaime lowers his voice, “And if anyone is mean to you, I’ll let Khaji vaporize them.”

The beetle embedded in his spine clicks in agreement. That makes her smile, eases some of the worry from her face, “Thanks, Khaji…y Burro Azul…”

“Just doing my Big Brother duties, Mocosa Verde.” Jaime stands and takes her hand again. Together, they walk into the chaotic living room.

Two dark haired kids—a boy with glasses and a girl in purple overalls— fly through the air. A sour-faced boy argues with Tim, she remembers Tim, about…supervision? On the couch, two Asian kids, another boy and girl, play a videogame, bickering on the best way to beat a level. Milagro notices a nervous redheaded boy, sitting apart from the others. Unlike the others, with their familiarity to one another, he looks how she feels.

“Jaime!” A bubbly redhead races across the room, lighting following her. Her arms wrap around the older boy’s waist.

“Hey, Irey.” He hugs her, “Bart around?”

“No, him, Kon, and Cassie had to run an errand.” She shrugs, “Damian’s being a butthead—“

“I heard that, West!” The boy arguing with Tim scowls in their direction.

“You were supposed to!” Irey makes a face at him, then looks at the last member to their team. That sunshine smile returns in an instant, holding her hand out, “You must be Milagro! Irey West, newest Impulse!”

Definitely related to Bart. Her words run together, each fighting to get out of her mouth first. She has the same smile Bart does, like pure sunshine. Milagro smiles back.

“Nice to meet you, Irey.” It’s odd to shake hands with someone her own age, but Irey acts like it’s second nature. Milagro nods at the lone boy in the corner, “That’s your brother, Jai, right? You’re twins?”

“Huh?” Irey looks behind her. “Oh! That’s Colin Wilkes, not my dumb brother. Jai-Jai! Li! Come say hi to Milagro!”

The Asian boy on the couch glances over his shoulder. A loud crack and more lightning, then he’s in front of her too. His hand stuck out in greeting, “Jai West, Velocity.”

These are the twins? Jaime had told her they were fraternal, but they don’t even look alike. At least…not at first. The longer she looks at them, the more details pop out. They share the same nose and jaw shape. Bits of gold shine in their eyes—hers brilliant green, his the lightest brown she’d seen. Freckles stand out on Irey’s pale skin, but Jai has some splashed across his tanned cheeks. Even without those details, Jai has the same energy as Irey—not nervous, exactly. More like…anticipation. Like a storm waiting to break.

Jai grins like a mad scientist, “Ah, Sissy, she’s having the—“

“‘Are they really twins?’ Face. I see it, Brother. That makes—“

“30 total this year, but she’s the 4th kid—“

“13.3 percent of the total new people—“

“Less than 3.62 percent in total—“

“She figured it out quicker—“

“I saw it in—“

“Wrinkle between eyebrows. Just like Jaime’s—“

Jaime blinks at that, “Wait, what?”

The two dart off before they answer him. Milagro’s head spins. The twins’ back and forth caught her off guard. Sure, she knew half their family were actual geniuses, but it never crossed her mind they would be too. She didn’t even register Colin walking over until he speaks.

“What about you? Who’s your family?”

He shifts his weight, “Great question. Asked the nuns that once but so did the others.”

“Wilkes, Reyes!” Damian snaps, “Training room in 20 minutes!”

“…Of course, Mocoso. Whatever you say.” Milagro offers a sweet smile, voice dripping with sarcasm. Hiding a grin, Jaime kisses the top of her head.

Irey jumps over the side table, more like a blur, “Race you!”

“Iris Anne West, you’re a cheater!” Jai follows on her heels. Milagro doesn’t catch what the redhead said, but she could have sworn she heard ‘Bartholomew’.

“Oye,” Jaime nudges her, “¿Estás bien?”

This time his question gets a true smile from her. Yeah, she’s got this.

The first time Tony Ford played Dungeons & Dragons, he was a wiry Black kid who had never seen the inside of a prison. His mother, a police officer in Detroit, had quit the force and moved the family to West Texas. To Ford, it seemed like a different world. Strangers talked funny, and El Paso was half desert. But he could skateboard in all that open space, and he eventually befriended a nerdy White kid with a passion for Dungeons & Dragons. Ford fell in love with the role-playing game right away; it was complex and cerebral, a saga you could lose yourself in. And in the 1980s, everyone seemed to be playing it.

D&D had come out a decade earlier with little fanfare. It was a tabletop role-playing game known for its miniature figurines and 20-sided dice. Players were entranced by the way it combined a choose-your-own-adventure structure with group performance. In D&D, participants create their own characters — often magical creatures like elves and wizards — to go on quests in fantasy worlds. A narrator and referee, known as the Dungeon Master, guides players through each twist and turn of the plot. There’s an element of chance: The roll of the die can determine if a blow is strong enough to take down a monster or whether a stranger will help you. The game has since become one of the most popular in the world, celebrated in nostalgic television shows and dramatized in movies. It is played in homes, at large conventions and even in prisons.

By the time Ford got to high school, he had drifted toward other interests — girls, cars and friends who sold drugs and ran with gangs. Ford started doing those things, too. He didn’t get into serious trouble until Dec. 18, 1991. Sometime before 9 p.m., two Black men knocked on the door of a small home on Dale Douglas Drive in southeast El Paso, asking for “the man of the house.” The woman who answered, Myra Murillo, refused to let them in. A few minutes later, they returned, breaking down the door and demanding money and jewelry. One opened fire, killing Murillo’s 18-year-old son, Armando.

Within hours, police picked up a suspect, who said Ford was his partner. They arrested Ford, who was 18 at the time, the following day. He has maintained that the two men who entered the house were brothers, and that he was outside in the car the whole time. There was no physical evidence clearly connecting him to the crime. He was so confident that a jury would believe him that he rejected a plea deal and took his case to trial in July 1993. He lost. By October, at age 20, he was on death row.

Back then, death row for men was located in a prison near Huntsville, Texas, where hundreds lived in tiny cells. The men were allowed to hang out together, watch television, play basketball and go to work at prison jobs. And because they were locked behind bars rather than solid doors, they could call out to one another and talk. That was how, one day, Ford caught familiar words drifting down from the cells above him, phrases like, “I’ll cast a spell!” “Aren’t there too many of them?” and “I think you have to roll.”

It was the sound of Dungeons & Dragons.

A San Antonio police officer fatally shot a man during an arrest on Sunday, according to authorities.

Police had been called to the city’s west side after being contacted by the man’s family, who had told authorities he had 11 warrants for his arrest, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told reporters.

When police spotted the man around 9 a.m. as he was riding his bicycle, he began to fight with officers, McManus said.
