What I’ve Been Listening To During Spooky Season, Part II Yesterday I posted the first part to a small series in which I talk about a handful of albums I’ve been listening to during the last couple weeks, especially now that it’s spooky season. It’s almost Halloween, and I’ve been in the mood for a lot of scary, spooky, and Halloween-ish albums. The first part focused on a few classic rock / metal albums, including Rob Zombie’s debut solo album, 1998′s Hellbilly Deluxe, King Diamond’s sophomore solo album, 1987′s Abigail, and Alice Cooper’s debut solo album, 1975′s Welcome To My Nightmare. Interesting that they were all solo albums, but I digress. The second part to this series is going to be a few quickfire reviews on a few albums from this year, all fitting under the spooky umbrella, and they’re all albums released within the last couple of weeks to the last couple of months. Without further ado, let’s get things started with the “oldest” album of the bunch, that being... Midnight - Let There Be Witchery Midnight is a band I’ve heard of for a long time, just never listened to, kind of because of the term “black metal” being included in their sound. I don’t like black metal, minus a few bands, but it’s usually bands that throw death metal into the mix, or some other kind of sub-genre. I don’t like “pure black metal,” and I can get into why, but Midnight’s brand of blackened thrash / NWOBHM is very, very good. I decided to check out their new album after looking up a bunch of spooky bands, and this album seemed quite perfectly, even down to its title -- Let There Be Witchery. That just screams Halloween, doesn’t it? It works pretty well, too; a lot of their material just blends together, and that’s the one major issue I have with this record, but as a whole, it’s a solid 35 minutes of blackened thrash with some flashy Iron Maiden-ish solos. It’s not a bad album whatsoever, and the lyrics are campy and over the top to really sell its sound. Acid Witch - Rot Among Us I didn’t really know what to expect going into the new Acid Witch album, as these guys are also another band I’ve heard of, just never listened to, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a death-doom-ish band. Apparently their first couple of albums are heavily in that vein, but they’ve lightened up their sound for a NWOBHM-influenced version of it, including more solos, catchier hooks, and a lighter sound overall. Rot Among Us is a really fun, cheeky, and entertaining death-doom album with a lot of swampy vocals that perfectly fit the spooky atmosphere that this album is going for. It’s nothing special, by any means, but it’s just so fun, spooky, and weird, I can’t help but enjoy it a lot. Bloody Hammers - Washed In The Blood This was the band that I knew the most about, and I’ve stuff their debut record from ten years ago, but that was the only thing I’d ever heard, although it seems like it’s still somewhat similar to what they’re doing now. Bloody Hammers started off as a doomy metal / hard-rock band, but this new record, Washed In The Blood, is more or less a catchy, punk-infused hard-rock band with some metal riffs left inside of them. This album is extremely catchy, and the lyrics are some of the spookiest I’ve heard this whole season, especially in a rather sincere kind of vein. They don’t come off over the top or silly, but I kind of buy into it, so I really dig it. This album is really short, only 32 minutes, so it breezes by pretty quick, which is good, because the album runs out of fresh ideas a few tracks in, so the rest of it just sounds similar to each other. It’s not a bad thing when the album itself is pretty damn good, and their sound is relatively unique, but minus some spooky lyrics and catchy hooks, this isn’t anything too different from what they’ve done before.

If divine grace does not eradicate all sin from the believer, how dost thou hope to do it thyself? and if God loves his people while they are yet vile, dost thou think thy vileness will prevent his loving thee? Believe on Jesus, thou outcast of the world’s society! Jesus calls thee, and such as thou art.

Even now say, “Thou hast died for sinners; I am a sinner, Lord Jesus, sprinkle thy blood on me;” if thou wilt confess thy sin thou shalt find pardon. thou shalt rise from reading this morning’s portion with all thy sins pardoned; and though thou didst wake this morning with every sin that man hath ever committed on thy head, thou shalt rest tonight accepted in the Beloved; though once degraded with the rags of sin, thou shalt be adorned with a robe of righteousness, and appear white as the angels are. For “now,” mark it, “Now is the accepted time.” If thou “believest on him who justifieth the ungodly thou art saved.” Oh! may the Holy Spirit give thee saving faith in him who receives the vilest.

"Think we need more bubbles?"

When you're met with nothing but silence, you look up from your bubble sculpture to see your partner sporting an all too familiar pout on their face. His tattooed arms were crossed over his bare chest like he wanted to prove a point — and as if to fully emphasize their current disdain; Ren turns his head away the moment you make eye contact.

You couldn't help but let out a puff of laughter at the silliness of it all.

"Why are you pouting?" You nudge their leg with your own. "What's wrong?"

"...Why are you all th'way over there?"

'Over there', being on the opposite side of the tub from your beloved boyfriend. Which... didn't make much sense now that you thought about it, seeing as he was the one who (silently) volunteered to take the side with the faucet and drain, which left you with all the space and legroom your heart could desire. Though... it wasn't much, given how massive of a mountain your partner was. Ren was all long, lanky limbs and thick muscle; but it wasn't exactly evident with all the baggy clothing they often chose to wear.

In an attempt to make your beloved hacker feel better about the (albeit childish) situation, you carefully scoot over so that you were resting against one of their legs instead of the tub. But apparently, Ren still wanted more, as a familiar tattooed arm emerges from the water the moment you draw closer and silently beckons you to join him at his side. When you accept — in what world would you ever say no to him and that trademark frown? — Ren pulls you flush against his chest with a content sigh.

They were acting like the cat who got the cream, no doubt.

You barely have a moment to adjust to your new position before you feel Ren's arms wrap around your waist, and his chin finds its place atop your shoulder. Now, your hacker has the perfect view of you rebuilding your bubble castle once more — only this time, you were right where he wanted you.

"There." Your tone is laced with something mirthful and lively as you lean into his embrace. "Is this better?

"Much."

"Just make sure you don't fall asleep. Elanor told me that it's not safe to do that." You purposefully ignore how their arms tense up at the mention of your coworker. However, you don't miss how they dip further under the water to run along the inside of your thighs instead.

Ren's real name slips from your lips in warning. You knew exactly what he was trying to do right now. Their hands were ghosting dangerously close to your—

"...'M not doing anything."

"Liar, I can feel you— Ah!"

His fingers casually brush past your most sensitive part, and it has you flinging your head back and clutching onto his forearm. From that reaction alone, you can hear Ren let out a curious hum from behind as their hand moves back to your sex once more.

"Just making sure you're all nice 'n clean down there."

"I-I somehow doubt that..."

"Isn't that the point of baths? T'get clean?" He muses, voice ghosting along the shell of your ear. "...Why were you talking to your coworker about taking baths in the first place, anyway?"

One of the rubber frogs you added ('for ambience!' you recall telling your boyfriend) innocently floats past, and you had half a mind to reach out and turn its gaze away from the intimate scene. Ren still had one hand firmly placed around your stomach to keep you steady while the other was shamelessly running up and down your—

"...Think I'm gonna need to do a thorough inspection. Bend over the tub f'me?"

[ID: A colourless, digital Trigun comic of Vash and Wolfwood talking about Wolfwood's scars. They're both laying in bed and topless. Vash lays on top of Wolfwood, playing with the rosary around his neck. Then, Vash kisses a spot on Wolfwood's chest. Wolfwood asks, "What are you doing?" Vash smiles sadly, "You got shot here. In the last town we visited. You didn't even bother moving."

Vash props himself up over Wolfwood, who frowns slightly. Wolfwood is quiet for a moment before he says, "You remember that, huh?" Vash grabs Wolfwood's left wrist and brings it to his face. "And here." He kisses another spot there. "When you helped free the hostages from that robber..." Wolfwood dismissively says, looking away, "Was a lucky shot." Vash huffs, “Don’t brag. Jeez.”

Half of Wolfwood's expression is shown, eyes returning to Vash who is now sitting up, continuing to say, "And..." Vash goes on and kiss Wolfwood's right palm. "You got cut here, even though that girl was aiming at me." A moment from the past flashes, of Wolfwood grabbing a knife aimed at Vash, his hand bleeding.

At present, Vash moves down and puts another kiss on Wolfwood's right shoulder. "And here, from watching my back." Another memory flashes of Wolfwood and Vash back to back. Vash looks back as Wolfwood grins while holding Punisher, bleeding from multiple gunshots in his shoulder.

"And," Vash combs up Wolfwood's hair to reveal his forehead, "Here." A final memory shows Wolfwood with a regeneration vial in his mouth while getting shot on his temple. The next panel is framed in blood with Vash at the center, eyes wide and stunned in horror. The next panel is a closed up shot of Wolfwood's eye, locked on Vash's face.

Back to present, Vash’s head is bowed down as Wolfwood raises a hand to his nape and says, “Spikey.”

Wolfwood looks serious and frowns as he says, "We talked about this. Those were my decisions. They're not there anymore. Forget about them." Vash looks very sad before he smiles ruefully and says, "I still see them. All the time." He leans down so they touch foreheads. Wolfwood’s sorrowful expression can be seen as Vash says, "You protect so much. I could never forget what you've done to me. And many others..."

In the last image, they're drawn more cartoonishly. Wolfwood sweats and asks, "You don't actually remember every wound, right?" Vash points at a spot on his chest. "Kuroneko left a scratch here 7 times." Wolfwood, startled, says, "Why the hell are you keeping count—" End ID]
