Would the culinary culture in Splatoon be different if they can only eat chunks of food? (I keep thinking of all the sensations/experiences that come from chewing food)
yes. well, clearly in splatoon it's not, but we already know the inklings are canonically just Human Lite despite not having teeth to chew food like we do, which would render a lot of foods TERRIBLE to eat even if you believe they do not have a radula. even if they JUST had their beak and a soft, flat tongue, they don't have anything in their mouth to grind food into paste... which, if you recall, is how we process like all food (unless you're REALLY excited about the meal, or lack teeth, or have a toothache. in the case of the latter, im sorry man)
Generally cephalopods are carnivorous, so stuff like rice and pasta or even bread aren't things that they would've come to eat naturally. The same goes for vegetables, which even the first game implies are a new thing in Inkopolis or squid culture (although it's unclear if this is even true or if it's a joke or exaggeration, this has never been expanded on). My headcanon is that these vegetable-based foods only recently became popular among Inklings due to influence from other cultures, namely species that are herbivorous. So as more mixed-species societies popped up, different foods that were fairly alien to other species also did, and eventually may have snaked their way into those species' diets if they were well-enough liked.
Generally I think Inklings' own culinary cultures would pretty much exclusively include meat (seafood), with the exception of fruit, which Inklings enjoy for their flavor, color and water content. But I think Inklings would be pretty simple with their cooking, meaning there's probably rarely much seasoning or even a side of any kind given those are mostly vegetable-based things - save for recent decades of course. Traditional inkfish food is probably finger food, grilled, deep-fried, or even raw. Small fried fish and fried shrimp are ever-popular, and utensils are really a fancier, newer thing. I like drawing inklings with suckers on their fingers, which also means that finger food would be the most natural way to eat something for them given that they can taste what they're about to eat before it's even in their mouth (which, among other things, is a very easy way to check if something is edible at all before it's in your body. Or if it's spicy).
Generally I think Inklings enjoy crunchy or crispy and fried food, which is typically meat or at least includes meat (usually that of crustaceans), and finger food is preferred for its simplicity and natural feel. The Crusty Seanwiches and Schwaffles are a very good example of the kind of food that is popular with Inklings, which also seek out the high calorie content because MY GOD, the energy consumption of even just one turf war has to be ridiculous. So as a whole i'd say they prefer food that is easy to eat by hand, rather than stuff that is so mushy you can't bite it at all or grab it... sauces are on thin fucking ice unless they are for dipping in.
When it comes to Octarians, I like to think their culinary culture is different from that of the surface, largely because of their wasteland surroundings unfit for farming much of anything even if they wanted to, and isolation from the rest of the world. Instead of the squids who like to fry and grill things, Octarians probably have more raw, pickled, dried and salted foods - these are foods that are easy to make and very easy to store for long periods of time, which is crucial when your society doesn't have all the food in the world to pass around as a given. They might have kelp as a side dish or an addition in soup every now and then, but most of their food is definitely some form of meat. Vegetables are mostly absent from Octarian cuisine due to not really being nutritionally helpful to octarians, like almost at all. Surprisingly, in spite of this, wasabi is a really big thing and is used as a spice similar to how we use like, salt and pepper. They'd have salt and uh... wasabi powder.

I was watching Florence Pugh's "Food diaries-what I eat in a day" video and I came across Ben Barnes' video, I noticed that he consciously gives himself healthy options but if he feels like he wants pizza or an apple pie he doesn't stress about it, and he grew up not being allowed like sugary cereal so he has like 4 different ones that he rotates, but mostly it was like the healthy stuff is a suggestion, something he would prefer himself consume, but if he's listening to whatever his body needs and that's a caramelized apple with sugar and flaky crust so be it. But that kind of reminds me of how we said nepo! Baby would raise her kids with the healthier options being in the house but they're still so good and if the whole family wants pizza we're getting a big size pizza and it doesn't matter, no stress about it and I think that with all the girls' problems that they grow up having (I mean like Kensie and Vega's bad bf syndrome, Sicily and Sienna's rager days or Persephone's big sister probs) that food would never really be an issue for them for that reason.
sorry I ranted I had an almond mom that is just now as I'm grown learning about food lol. But thinking about technically living vicariously through nepo!baby in that way is healing my inner child. like yes mom i like wasabi almonds but i also like real bread
yeah it’s definitely more organic and natural options rather than ‘low calorie’ if that makes sense? she wants no gmos or added bad things into her food bc they can be harmful chemicals. they still eat meat, it’s just grass fed and farm to table vibes, and their chips are more natural.
with that being said…
eddie supports it, but he’s like, “baby my ‘90 tour I did the entire thing running off of mountain dew, little debbies, and cigarettes lol” so they have non-healthy things in the house too. just not everything.
there’s a balance. the girls can make their own choices- except the honey buns when they’re younger but that’s actually just a rule for vega bc she gets absolutely unhinged when she would eat them.
she’s not a toxic almond mom, more so she wants her girls to be healthy in the ways of not putting bad chemicals into their bodies all the time. she’s very balanced, like she has a holistic approach but believes in doctors and vaccines. she really just wants the best for her girls because she never had someone who wanted that for her.

Meducoid Mycelium Cure
So I've had this theory for quite a while and thought I would share it. I would like to clarify that I don't have any type of high education in chemistry or biology so take this with a grain of sugar. This theory doesn't cover the sugar bowl or the apples in the arboretum.
So, as a bit of context, this theory came to be when I was doing an in depth re-watch of A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix) and by in depth I mean pausing at least every 5 minuets to have a debate with my friend. We noticed that at 4 points rutabagas were mentioned, and mentioning something once is fine, twice is a coincidence, thrice is suspicious and quadrice means that its important. 2 of the times rutabagas were mentioned were in areas where you had to pause to see (Rutabaga River and rutabagas mentioned in 'An Incomplete History of Secret Organisations'). the other 2 times was Esme having a basket of rutabagas and Colette (or Kevin) saying how they could start a rutabaga farm.
My first thought was that it was a substitute for horseradish but because I have no culinary knowledge (and have never had horseradish, wasabi or rutabagas so I have no idea if they even tasted similar) I went to reddit to find if they knew but I only had two answers, one person said that using rutabagas to cure the Meducoid Mycelium would be useless and the other said maybe as they are both spicy vegetables.
But I wasn't satisfied so I did my own digging.
I figured that if both horseradish and wasabi cure the Meducoid Mycelium they mush share a chemical of sort so I googled it. Apparently they share a chemical called Allyl isothiocyanate (AIT). I got this from this website. so you can judge how true this is. Also on that website it mentioned that AIT is well known to prohibit bacteria and fungal growth (this is on sentence 3, this is the direct quote 'It is well known that AIT shows inhibitory effect on the growth of food poisoning bacteria and fungi.').
I then went digging and the website is right AIT is a fungicide. Also I went digging some more about other foods with AIT in it and this is the list Wasabi, Horseradish, broccoli, radish, cabbage, mustard and other cruciferous vegetables (I got this information in this website on the first paragraph of the introduction).
so I did my final bit of research of what more examples of cruciferous vegetables and here is the final list of foods that should cure the Meducoid Mycelium: Horseradish, Land cress, Ethiopian mustard, Kale, Chinese broccoli, Cabbage, Savoy cabbage, Brussels sprouts, Kohlrabi, Broccoli, Broccolini, Broccoloflower, Broccoli romanesco, Chinese cabbage, Cauliflower, Wild broccoli, Komatsuna, Mizuna, Rapini (broccoli rabe), Choy sum (flowering cabbage), Chinese cabbage (napa cabbage), Turnip roots, Siberian kale, Canola/rapeseed, Wrapped heart mustard cabbage, Mustard seeds, White mustard seeds, Black mustard seeds, Tasoi, Wild arugula, Arugula, Field pepperweed, Maca, Garden cress, Watercress, Radish, Daikon, Wasabi and yes Rutabaga.
(this is my proof of were I got these . I know its Wikipedia but I trust it with this. )

Day 1
Well first night went ok, I do need to see what I need to fix the cracks up though. They mailed me what I need; 50 wood and 20 stone, I think I can get all of that just from the farm itself.
I found a couple of interesting things while I did a little clearing, a geode and a coffer, no idea what to do with them just yet but I'll figure it out.
I planted some of the seeds, they were turnips and daisies, the packets said they didn't take long to grow which I guess is good? I wonder if they have farming books here? The most I remember about it was summers helping Grandpa water tomatoes and chasing the chickens… I wonder if I can get chickens? I wandered around a bit found some pretty flowers, and I found the General Store! Sam seems nice, and the Mayor was there to introduce us, also to encourage me to meet some of the townsfolk apparently I make them nervous? Here I was thinking they were excited.
Anyway the General store apparently sells seasonal seeds, so I'll have to go in at the start of ever season to see the new seeds. I picked up some potato seeds to plant.
Meeting new people… So far I've met Ben, who was in the General Store, he seems…nice? He said I had good vibes? So that's something. Oh and I saw the most adorable fluffy brown dog! His tag said his name was BonBon, 😍 so cute! I also ran into Alice! Gosh we used to play on the beach in Summer with her sister Suki, she's still here too, apparently they run the Inn now! Which…hasn't had much business? In the Town Square I met this adorable girl called Eva, apparently her names actually Everest I always thought that was a guys name. She also mentioned they don't get a lot of new faces. Finally an explanation, I ran into a charming woman while heading back to the farm, name of Betty, she was filling up some bird feeders and upon my introduction mentioned that there was oil spill near here. Which I do remember hearing about, but I guess I never realised it was here of all places. Grandma certainly didn't mention it when she offered me the farm.
I headed down to the beach, I wanted to see how bad it was, I was tired yesterday and didn't notice anything which…it's bad, there's oil and these weird like spiky root things, how the heck did I miss this? I guess Mum was right about how observant I'm not…she can never know. Anyway I did a little exploratory running around, found the Carpenters! So now I know where that is, also the forest… Oh man there are so many monkeys! Also a weird place with a danger sign that sounded like it had a fight going on inside… not sure what that was about.
Oh and I met a few other people, someone named Chaem who…honestly seemed pretty forthright, a lady name of Zarah who was using a metal detector and seemed surprised I'd moved here after the oil spill. A dapper person called Raj who mentioned they did coffee ☕? So I know where to go for a pick me up 🤩.
The forest also seems to do pretty good for mushrooms, I found some nice Shiitake and some canola to pop in my shipping bin. I also found wasabi 😫.
Finally after a long days work, I headed to bed. If I keep up this pace I should hopefully have enough wood and stone by either tomorrow or the next day. I just hope it doesn't rain.

Phantoms of the Past Chapter 36 - Ransoms and Romance on the Range - Part 1
Tumblr media
"Welcome to the Lone Star Dude Ranch!" Krei proudly announced as he stepped off the bus.
The rest of college kids followed him, though not quite with the same level of enthusiasm.
"What are we doing here again?" Hiro asked him as he warily eyed the old ranch house.
"We're here to impress Mister Allen and get him to invest in our new portal project." Keri said as he straightened his tie. "Don't worry I'll do all the actual negotiating; I just need you kids to have a good time and do whatever it is teenagers do."
"So basically you just brought us along on this trip because it makes you look good in front of your investors." Wasabi said.
"Exactly Yosabi- hey don't give me that look. You get a free vacation out of it, don't you?"
Tadashi shrugged. "It might be fun to be a cowboy for the weekend."
"That's the spirit!" Keri encouraged, placing an arm around him, and failing to notice just how uncomfortable Tadashi was at the familiarity.
"I can't wait to ride the horses!" Honey Lemon jumped for joy.
Gogo was not excited by such a prospect herself.
"It smells." She complained, and the rest of the teens also gagged as they walked by the stables. All save for Varian who didn't seem bothered by the odor at all.
"It just smells like a stable." He shrugged.
"You mean it smells like a ranch, young man." A voice called out to them.
They all turned to see Mister Allen walking out of the house to come meet them, a wide grin on his face.
'Hehehe... I suspect you youngsters ain't used to the country, growing up in the city and all?"
"Actually I grew up on a farm." Varian said.
"Did you, now?" and if it were possible Mister Allen's grin grew even wider. He then patted Varian on the back. "Well it looks like you'll fit right on in here. Now I show you to your rooms and let y'all freshen up, and then the real work begins." He winked.
"Work?" Fred asked.
"Of course. Work's never done on a dude ranch. I'm going to put all to task and teach you youngsters some real skills. Especially you Alistair."
Krei's face fell at that.
"So much for our free vacation." Wasabi muttered.
Allen overheard him. "Now don't you worry none, son. There will be plenty of fun activities to be had as well. Just follow me back to the house."
As they tagged along behind the tycoon they passed by a fence where some of the ranch hands were trying to wrangle in a stallion. It had a beautiful black coat with a white mane and white at the bottom of its legs.
Honey Lemon gasped with glee when she saw it. "It's so pretty."
She ran to the rail to get a closer look but Mr. Allen stopped her before she could lean over the banister.
"Woah now, missy. Hold on there. That there is a wild horse. I wouldn't get too close to Widomaker if I was you."
As if to prove his point, one of the cowboys finally managed to grab hold of the stallion's neck and pulled himself up onto its back. The bronco started to buck widely and the rest of the hands scurried back out of the way of its kicking hooves. The unfortunate young man who had managed to mount the horse didn't get to sit on it for long and was thrown off in a matter of moments. His fellow co-workers laughed heartily as they helped him up and checked him over from injuries. Fortunately, it was only his pride that was truly hurt.
"We found the poor thing with a broken leg two weeks ago. No idea where his herd is. Some of the boys have been trying to tame him, but we may just have to turn him over to the rangers instead."
Varian studied the horse intently as it stomped around the enclosure, clearly agitated. Another ranch hand reached out to grab him only to fall on his face as the stallion dodged out of the way quickly. This ignited only more good natured laughter from the crowd.
"He's probably just scared." Varian logically pointed out. "Maybe if you stopped chasing him and just talked to him instead he'd calm down?"
"What are you, the horse whisperer?" The ranch hand that had fallen on his face said as he walked over to them.
"Can you ride him hotshot!?" The other cowboy who'd fallen off yelled from across the way.
Varian shook his head. "Nobody can ride any horse that doesn't want to be ridden."
Mr. Allen burst into laughter and heartily patted Varian on the back once more. "Well said, my boy. Well said. Come on, let's let the men have their fun and head on inside."
And with that he led the little group away from the scene. Only Hiro, Wasabi, and Fred hung back to watch the ranch hands continue to try and break the wild mustang in.
"That's supposed to be fun?" Hiro cocked his head to the side as he watched another guy try and fail to ride the beast. All three of them winced when he too was thrown off.
"Oooff." Fred said. "I'm all for adventure, but that just looks..... dumb."
Another man got on and lasted even less time than the previous guy had. Laughter erupted from the cowboys again.
"Texas, man...." Wasabi sighed, as several men started to chase after stallion once more. "There's just something not right about this state."
                                               -----------------------
Honey Lemon readjusted the cute cowgirl hat on her head while looking in the mirror on the antique dresser. Her room in the ranch house was small and sparsely decorated, but she didn’t mind. It had a simple rustic charm to it, and it was nice to have a bedroom all to herself for a change.
She gave a little twirl in order to admire her new outfit. Jeans, cowboy boots, and a colorful flannel shirt completed the ensemble and helped to make her feel just like a real cowgirl. Satisfied that she now looked the part, Honey Lemon couldn’t wait to actually live out the fantasy. She had always loved horses as a little girl, but this would be her first chance to actually ride one.
Mr. Allen, the ranch owner, had told her that he’d send someone to teach her how to ride. She was to meet them in the barn in an hour after she had freshened up. However, when she got to the barn the only other person there was Varian.
He was brushing the coat of an old mare, while singing some sort of folk song in his native language. He looked to be completely at home here, no doubt performing a chore that he had done a thousand times throughout his youth.
“Hi,” Honey Lemon said once the song had come to an end. She loved hearing him sing and didn’t want to interrupt.
“Oh, hey,” He said sheepishly as if just noticing she was there, ”I’m just brushing down the horses before you ride them.”
“How come?”
“Oh, well, you want to make sure that there’s no dirt or debris under the saddle, otherwise the horse will be uncomfortable.”
“You know a lot about horses, don't you?”
Varian laughed, “Well I should hope so. They’re the only means of transportation in my world. Everyone knows how to ride one, unless you just enjoy walking everywhere.”
“What else do you know about them? Like do you have any tips for me?”
Varian walked over to grab the saddle and placed it on the mare, “Well you always want to mount a horse on the left side.”
“Why?”
Varian paused in fasting the saddle, as if he had never considered the question, “I... I don’t know. You just do. The horse will know you’re doing it wrong if you try to mount from the right, and the last thing you want is for the horse to know that you’re inexperienced. It won’t listen to you otherwise, and even then they still might not listen to you.”
“Okay, so how do you get a horse to listen to you?”
Varian finished strapping the saddle on the mare and then straightened up and placed his hands on his hips. He mulled over that question for a moment or two as if thinking about it for the first time.
“I guess, ultimately by being confident. I don’t know, but it has to trust you. If a horse doesn’t trust its mount then it’ll do whatever it wants to and that can be dangerous for the rider. Though it also depends on the temperament of the horse.” He patted the mare, “Luciebelle here is a good riding horse. She’s gentle and used to people, I can tell.”
“Well then how do I get her to trust me?” Honey Lemon asked as she gently petted the mare.
“Well I can show you a trick, my dad once taught me.” And with that, Varian walked over to stand in front of the mare and gently lifted the head up and brought it close to his own face. Then he blew air into the horse’s nose. The horse seemed to like this. It stamped the ground and nuzzled Varian asking for more. Varian laughed as he petted the horse’s nose. “You try.”
Honey Lemon wasn’t fully sure what she was doing, but she took Varian’s place and performed the same action just as he did. It worked; Luciebelle nuzzled her back and Honey Lemon giggled with delight.
“Why does that work?” she asked.
Varian shrugged, “ I don’t know, but it does.”
“It’s ‘cause horses show affection with one another that way,” A young woman said. They turned to see a teenage girl standing at the other end of the stable. She had light brown hair braided into two pigtails and she wore a cowboy hat, leather skirt and boots, and a pink button down shirt.
“Howdy, I’m Austin.” The new girl introduced herself. “I’m the owner’s daughter. Daddy told me some novices were wanting to learn how to ride but you seem to be an expert. Ain’t often we get city folk who know what they’re doing.”
Austin leaned in towards Varian with a smile as she gave him this complement
“Well, yeah, I grew up on a farm.” Varian sheepishly admitted.
“Really? Where from?” She asked as she slid closer.
“Oh Europe,” He dismissed, “You said you were here to teach the riding lessons?”
“Yeah, but it looks like you don’t need my help,” Austin said with another wide grin as she batted her eyes. “Maybe I can show you around instead?”
Honey Lemon frowned. Austin hadn’t said more than two words to her since arriving. Not only was she being ignored, but the way the other girl kept trying to get close to Varian irritated her for some reason, though she couldn’t figure out why.
Honey Lemon closed the distance between her and Varian and hooked his arm into hers, pulling him closer to her possessively. “Varian was going to teach me how to ride.” She lied.
“Oh sure, I can do that.” Varian agreed and then turned back to Austin, “Maybe you can show us around later?”
Austin blinked as if surprised that she was being turned down. “Oh, well, I’ll see ya later then. I’ll be over at the house whenever you’re done.” She turned to walk away but stopped to say something over her shoulder, “Oh and be careful of prairie dog holes while out there. Greenhorns are all the time getting thrown off ‘cause their horse stepped into one.”
The tone of her voice when she said the word ‘greenhorn’ told Honey Lemon that the passive aggressive advice was really an insult directed at herself. No, she did not like this new girl at all.
                                              -----------------------
"So we talked to Mr. Allen.... and it looks like he might want to invest." Varian chatted conversationally as they rode out onto the rolling grassland. "Nothing won't be finalized for awhile but it's a start."
"So you mean it? You're going to take Krei's business offer?" Honey Lemon said as she gently swayed in the saddle. Varian had been a fantastic teacher and Honey Lemon had found her first riding lesson easy. Of course, it helped that they didn't go any faster than a gentle trot.
"I'm... still considering it… It would be a lot of money, and I would basically be my own boss." Varian shrugged. "I guess it's not the worst job one could have... but I hate the whole 'kissing up to rich people to get their money' part.... it's just... I don't know... feels dishonest, even though it's not... like the tech does work."
"I guess being a sales person isn't something that can be taught in school huh?" She laughed.
"I guess not." He joined in with laughter. "B-but I've been thinking about that vineyard idea of yours. I actually like it. If we can find one close enough to San Fransokyo that is."
"With a castle?" Honey Lemon smiled hopefully.
"A huge stone castle... Ooh! with a stable!"
"And we can go horseback riding anytime we want!" Honey Lemon cheered.
Varian could only laugh harder at her enthusiasm. "Yeah, so a stone castle with a huge banquet hall for dancing and dinners, a stable, what else?"
Honey Lemon thought a moment. "Hmmm.... well rooms for everyone are a given... soooo ... What about a swimming pool?"
"I could go for that... or even better a pond... that way you can go both swimming and fishing."
Honey Lemon nodded her head in agreement. "You're right. I think that would be better... it's better for the environment too."
"Oh and I'll do you even one better on the rooms... What if, we made everyone their own suite?"
"Oh you mean like, everyone gets their own private bathroom?"
"Yeah, and a spare room to do whatever in. That's typical of real castles. They're more like ancient apartments than individual homes... it's just you have to share the kitchen."
"How many people did you share a kitchen with in Old Corona?"
"Not many... unless you count the whole village."
Honey Lemon tilted her head in confusion, and Varian snorted at the face she made.
"What I mean is, Dad and I were the only ones actually living in the castle, but that's also where we held the food stores for the entire village, so everyone was free to come and go as they pleased. It wasn't unusual to find all of the women baking bread in the ovens every morning, except Sundays."
"You mean people didn't have kitchens in their own homes?"
"Oh they did, but usually they didn't have ovens, just fireplaces. Though a few had some outdoor clay ovens."
Honey Lemon shook her head. "Can't imagine waking up and just finding a bunch of strangers in my kitchen using my stove."
"Well they weren't strangers, they were neighbors. I'd known everybody since before I could walk and talk. It'd be more like waking up and cooking a huge breakfast with Carl and Aunt Cass before they went off to work for the day."
"That actually sounds kind of nice. Having community projects to do all the time."
"Yeah.. it was nice... Sometimes I think San Fransokyo is too big, ya know. Don't get me wrong... It's overall a lot better than Corona, that's for sure... but something gets lost when you have that many people living in such a small space. Like you don't get to know your neighbors that well, and you don't get that... that same sense of community that you do in a village."
"You're starting to sound like my abuelo. He grew up in a small town too. He said that San Jaun was a big culture shock when first got to America."
"When did he move to Sacramento?"
"Shortly after marrying my abuela. He got a job there."
"I guess he likes it there better, considering he never moved again."
"I guess, though, Sacramento is still a big city. I mean it is the capital after all."
"I'd like to see it." He said as he reigned in his horse. Honey Lemon followed suit. "Maybe I could drive us up there one weekend, and you can show me all your old stomping grounds."
"I don't have any old stomping grounds." She breathlessly laughed. "But I could take you to all the touristy spots."
"Sounds great... so it's a date then? When do you wanna go."
Honey Lemon started to blush at the word 'date' but he had mentioned it so casually that she was sure he had not intended anything romantic by it, so she fought down the butterflies that started to form in her chest.
"Oh... I don't know yet... We're not even done with this vacation we're on now."
"That's fair... also I doubt you can get views like this in any city."
Honey Lemon followed his gaze out onto the wind swept prairie. It was nothing but endless blue sky and grassland for miles. The only thing breaking the skyline was one lone outcropping of rock that situated itself off in the distance, to their right. It was a breathtaking sight, especially for a girl who lived around skyscrapers her whole life.
                                              -----------------------
The two teens failed to notice that hidden within the crevices of that nearby outcropping were a trio of men. They wore cowboy hats and blue jeans. Around their waists were holsters, with fitted pistols. Two of the men casually leaned against a couple of hovercraft ironically shaped like steel cattle, while the third laid flat against the outcropping peering through a set of binoculars.
"There she is! I spotted her, Joe! I spotted her!" The third man gleefully called out.
Joe stomped over and yanked the binoculars away from his younger brother.
"Let me see, Jeff!" He peered through the lens with a huff. "How do you know it's her?"
"Well who else could it be?" Jeff insisted. "There ain't no lady ranch hands on Allen's place, according to Johnny, except for Kim, and she's in her forties."
"Hmmm… she'd be about the right age..." Joe muttered, as zoomed in on the skinny redhead sitting on her horse.
"See? It's gotta be Allen's daughter. Ain't I right, Jim? I'm sure I'm right."
The final brother was a man of few words. Instead he silently took the binoculars away from Joe to peer through them himself.
Meanwhile Joe stroked his short beard. "So... the question now is how do we get the girl?"
Jim lowered the binoculars and pulled out his gun. "Let's just shoot the hired hand and nab her now."
He took aim at the two teens, yet right as he pulled the trigger, Joe knocked the gun out of his hand. The laser bolt it shot out went wide and hit the ground instead, completely missing its target.
                                              -----------------------
Varian heard the shot, but he didn't know what it was. It sounded like a small explosion, like a pop-it firecracker going off.
Whatever the noise was however, the horses did not like the sound of it one bit. Before Varian could even think, his mount reared up on his hind legs and neighed with fright. While Honey Lemon's own horse bolted away at a full gallop.
"Wooah! Woah there, Ozark!" He pulled back hard on the reins to get the stallion to calm down, and then he ordered the horse to give chase with a click of his heels.
                                              -----------------------
Poor Honey Lemon didn't know what to do. She held on for dear life as the horse galloped at full speed. Yet try as she might, she felt herself slipping off the saddle anyways.
"Woah! Stay!"
She turned to see Varian riding up alongside her. He called again for the horse to stop, but the frighten mare ignored his commands. Honey Lemon gave a little shout of fight of her own as she felt left foot fall out of its stirrup and she began to tilt to the right. Varian urged his own mount to go faster and he grabbed hold of free reins of her horse as soon as he got close enough to do so.
"Woah girl!" He shouted and pulled on both reins to get them to slow down. Then in one swift motion, he hopped off his horse and ran in front of hers, cooing soft words to the terrified mare.
"Easy... easy. It's okay. Luciebelle. It's okay. There's nothing out here to hurt you."
Luciebelle finally started to calm down as he patted her nose and blew into her muzzle. Satisfied that both horses were now under control he rushed to Honey Lemon's side.
"Are you alright?" He breathlessly asked her as he held out his arms to her. Despite his reassuring words to the horses he appeared shaken.
Honey Lemon herself was also trembling, but she didn't want to worry him any more than he already was.
"I-I think so." She said as she slipped off the saddle and Varian caught her. He gently sat her feet down and then pulled her into a tight hug. She buried her face into his chest, gripping his shirt to steady herself as she took deep calming breaths. She sensed his own racing heartbeat as she nuzzled closer to him.
"Th-thank goodness, nothing bad happened." He whispered into her ear with a shaky breath. He then quickly pressed his lips to her temple, before tightening the hug.
Honey Lemon didn't know how to respond to such an action. It was all over and done with so quickly that she barely registered it as a kiss. Yet now her heart beat faster for completely different reasons.
"Wh-what did happen?" she asked instead, as she wrapped her arms around his waist. As scared and confused as she was, she had to admit to herself that she liked being held like this.
"I don't know." He shook his head and loosened his grip around her waist. "But something spooked the horses."
He finally ended the embrace as he stepped away from her to look out over the plains. His keen eyes narrowed as he scanned the horizon, and Honey Lemon noticed the tension in shoulders as he remained poised and ready to for... well for what, they didn't know.
Honey Lemon chewed on the end of her fingernail. Varian only grew so somber and serious when he suspected danger. It was like he transformed into a totally different person. Someone far removed from the happy smiling kid he usually presented himself as.
Not seeing anything out of place, Varian shook his head once more and turned back to her.
"We better head on back before anything else goes wrong." He said.
Honey Lemon didn't argue with him. Suddenly the fantasy of galloping across the fields, wild and free, didn't seem so appealing to her.
He then helped her back onto the horse, lifting her with ease, before tightening her stirrups and checking to make sure the saddle was secure. Instead of mounting his own steed, however, he grabbed the reins of both horses and started walking in front of them.
"I'll walk us back, so that way I can tend to both horses if need be" He explained. "You just sit tight and practice riding. Remember, grip with your knees, not your thighs and if this happens again, stand up in the saddle. You'll be able to keep your balance better if your butt's not in the seat."
"Then how do I not fall off completely?"
"You can use the stirrups for support, but continue holding on with your knees. Also, you can control the direction of the horse by placing pressure on which side you want him to turn. That's for if you lose hold of the reins again. S-sorry... I guess I should have told you all this before we left the ranch."
Honey Lemon shook her head. "No, don't blame yourself. You couldn't have known this would happen."
"But that's just it. No one could have known, but it was always a possibility and I should have prepared you more. It's just the basics." He sighed and turned back around to look up at her. He gripped the reins tighter as he walked backwards. "I learned to ride when I was seven. It's like with everyone else and bicycles; you just remember everything subconsciously that it's harder to learn when you're older... and harder to teach apparently when you're not used to teaching." He chuckled. "I guess you'll want Austin to teach you next time, huh?"
He meant it in jest, but Honey Lemon couldn't help but make a face upon hearing the other girl's name. "Yeah, I don't think so.... I might take a break from riding for a while.... But maybe you can teach me more when you get the castle stables built?" She teased, her smile returning.
"Gladly m'lady." He smiled back, before turning around again and leading them back towards the ranch house.
                                              -----------------------
"You dad-blamed moron!" Joe shouted as he hit Jim repeatedly with his hat. "How is the boy supposed to give our ransom note if he's dead?"
"Too late now," Jeff interpreted as he pointed towards the field. "They're already leaving."
"Ah, let'em go. We'll get the girl soon enough. Allen will pay plenty to get his precious princess back from the notorious Jolton Brothers."
He gave an evil grin as he rubbed his hands together with anticipated glee.

film reviews: Dreams (1990, Akira Kurosawa)
Synopsis: This anthology film, which draws on Japanese folklore and history, and themes of art and environmentalism, comprises eight segments, each based on a dream director Akira Kurosawa had in his life. In Sunshine Through the Rain, a young boy sneaks out from home during a sunshower to spy on a kitsune wedding, but is caught, enraging the foxes. In The Peach Orchard, a family is celebrating Hinamatsuri, or Doll Day. The young son follows a mysterious girl out of the house to the family's orchard, where he is confronted by the spirits of the peach trees cut down. In The Blizzard, four adventurers are caught in a blizzard while ascending a mountain, and fall asleep from exhaustion. One of the men wakes up to find a beautiful yuki-onna wrapping him in blankets of snow. In The Tunnel, an army commander returning home passes through a tunnel and is confronted by the ghosts of his dead regiment. In Crows, the only segment in English, an artist falls into the world of Van Gogh's paintings and ends up in 1880s France, where he meets Van Gogh himself. In Mount Fuji in Red, a nuclear power plant on the slopes of Mt. Fuji erupts, spelling toxic doom for everyone in the area. In The Weeping Oni, a young man in an apocalyptic wasteland meets a man with a horn growing out of his head in heavenly punishment for the sins he committed in his life. He shows the young man a gathering of demons, all with horns growing from their heads, howling in pain. In Village of the Watermills, the same young man arrives in a picturesque village whose inhabitants have eschewed modern conveniences for a more earthly, honest way of living, and witnesses a funeral parade celebrating the deceased's long life.
Review: I last saw this film many years ago so I wasn't sure how it would hold up, but on rewatching it I found it every bit as beautiful and moving as I did the first time. Kurosawa was a painter in his youth before he joined the film industry, and his color films made late in his life are bursting with color and imagery, every frame a master painting. Dreams, like Ran and Kagemusha, is visually stunning, and the film makes good use of makeup and costumes to achieve an ethereal, dreamlike effect in all of its segments. I can't recommend the film enough for lovers of Japanese culture and/or art films.
Additional comments: It's thought that the segment The Cherry Orchard was inspired by a sister of Kurosawa's who died young. In the segment Crows, Martin Scorsese plays Van Gogh. Village of the Watermills was filmed at a real location, Daio Wasabi Farm in Honshu, Japan. I love the way Mount Fuji in Red and The Weeping Oni are followed by Village of the Watermills, contrasting the apocalyptic worst-case scenarios for how modern society might end up with a vision of a better alternative. And I love the final shot of the film, of overflowing, bountiful nature overlaid with such melancholy, heartrending music. The music used is "In a Village" from Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov's "Caucasian Suite", although the arrangement removes the fast section and repeats the slow sections several times.
The film is on YouTube, and you can watch it here.

Asumi Rio's Atelier Season 2 Cover Interview 🎙️
Tumblr media
(translation on 10/25/22)
Note: Lol double post today. This was not planned but this interview just came out, it was short, and I'm literally obsessed with her and these photos so.
This is an interview on Asumi's new season of her Hulu original show Asumi Rio's Atelier, which had its first season in , which will drop its first to episodes on Japanese Hulu on November 24th, then release new episodes every Saturday, for a total of 8 episodes.
Interview below the cut
In Asumi Rio’s Atelier’s previous season, Asumi Rio learned many ways of enriching her adult alone time. In Season 2, she is leaving the atelier and embarking on a trip.
―What was it like when it was decided there would be a season 2?
Asumi: I was incredibly happy. Season 1 was always inside the atelier, so I would joke around saying that my big dream was, “Season 2 in Hawaii” (laughs). This time we’re taking one step forward from the title and going on a trip, so I’m looking forward to being able to see different scenery than there was in the previous season.
―Your destination is Okinawa and Shizuoka, could you tell us some highlights of them?
Asumi: For Okinawa, experiencing folk songs, Ryukyu glasses, eisa, and Okinawa’s unique culture. The scenery is beautiful, so I’m hoping the viewers are able to experience the feeling of really going to Okinawa. As for Shizuoka, I went to the restaurant I always loved before entering Takarazuka, as well as the ballet school attended. I lived in Shizuoka all the way until I graduated middle school, but at the time I was limited to the general area where I lived, so I went to a wasabi farm and a piano factory for the first time. Then I did glamping, which was something I have always wanted to try. There’s an amazing glamping spot where you can see Mount Fuji, I also discovered that places like this are actually recently built.
―It also seems like you were able to once again meet your former ballet teachers. What was it like?
Asumi: It was so heartwarming, more than I ever could have imagined. Remembering all those times from when I was young was just so heartwarming that the tears just naturally came out. During the time I was in Shizuoka, I was holding my family close to me, doing the things I enjoyed commuting to school. Ever since I was a kid I’ve been blessed by those around me, it was the first for me in life, to be able to remember these times and experience such utter happiness, all thanks to being able to spend such an amazing time with my ballet teachers.
―Lastly, please give a message to the Sakura Saku Life readers.
Asumi: There is a super close friend of mine, my classmate from Takarazuka, Nanami Hiroki. When I had just entered Takarazuka Music School, the natto that she gave me from her hometown Mito was so delicious, I was so surprised. One day I always wanted to go to the actual place and eat this natto. So if you happen to find me in town please think, “Hey, that’s the person that appeared in this magazine!” (laughs).

In 9 days my two courses start online (interpersonal communication & human relations in organizations or something like that - although I was originally also signed up for abnormal psyche too, I decided my work schedule was going to be too hectic for that). I haven't even checked out the portal system or anything but I'll be doing that Monday or by Wednesday because I am going to spend the next two days working insanely and then traveling and then working insanely and then traveling and then working insanely (with a friend!) and then probably traveling again (to work insanely might I add). Hopefully I can squeeze it in. I'm excited to be in classes again!
We have been mostly doing repair and restoration from winter on the farm right now, and it was quite a season. It's been double booked with getting the place ready for listing so it's been a lot of moving gravel, tamping road base, and endless landscaping. I have poison oak all over me like a seasonal accessory. I spent most of last week weed whacking. Today we removed a few fallen and snapped trees so I could finally get into work at the lower garden because most of the beds had been covered by fallen bamboo and alder limbs in varying capacities. I lost pretty much everything in pots because of the months-long issue with the water line (including my wild rhodies, and my salmon berry clones) but I did manage to save the Wasabi.
I'm gonna take a bath tonight because I have been working for several weeks straight. I gotta do the dishes and clean the smoker out first, though, otherwise what's the point of doing it cause I'll just have to get up and finish everything 😭 so much work to do though, it's never ending.
