Hey so I'm trying to figure out some stuff about the Inkadian government and needless to say there's a lot of rampant Cnidarian corruption - but I had a question about jellies
Opinions on what Nogami said about the Jellyfish having a hivemind? Is there any sort of biological fact it's based in? (All I can think of is how some jellyfish like the Portuguese Man 'O War is actually a collection of polyps cooperating to find food)
Sorry if someone's already asked this, but it's appreciated!
i have literally no idea. I know next to nothing about jellyfish and the jellyfish in splatoon have so many random tidbits of lore and culture that we only get random lore drops of in interviews. Like the fact they're a hivemind WHATEVER THAT MEANS, most of them don't speak, they just split parts of themselves off and clone to reproduce, one of them just started glowing one day and magically every other jellyfish could glow too after that (what), a lot of them Do Things just because they're mimicking things other people do et cetera.
i have no idea what the "correct" way to interpret the hivemind thing in canon terms would be, but I do have some thoughts on it. i feel it's more likely that jellyfish in general are a hivemind in the way that they can sense each other's thoughts and emotions and intent to some form, and their behavior and communication just greatly mystifies other species who can't read their body language at all and mainly communicate by speech, which jellyfish learn to do solely if they want to communicate with non-jellyfish, pretty much. I'd assume it's less of a hivemind in the "they all literally have the same brain" but more of a hivemind in the sense of they have extremely refined and detailed ways of probably chemical communication or something, so other species can't predict or understand their trains of thoughts at all and thus find it mystifying and confusing when jellyfish will randomly do things in perfect unison despite the fact that they didnt communicate about it whatsoever.
The main problem i have with jellyfish is that it makes it REALLY HARD to make jellyfish OCs because we literally don't know how they work. i like jellyfish and want to make ocs so badly and I will, but what the fuck man. Also jellyfish give me so many additional questions. HOW do birth certificates and IDs work in splatoon when people can just randomly clone themselves? Are the jellyfish recognized citizens? I'd hope so. They supposedly have money but do they get paid for all the work the NPCs do in spite of the game saying a lot of jellyfish just do things that they've seen other jellyfish and people do? i'd hope so. Do they have like, housing? Like what is going on. We know from Jelonzo and Jelfonzo and the like that jellyfish at least have their own individual will instead of just being a cog in a hypotethical singularity that every jellyfish is a part of. Or, well...

There's actually quite a lot of this in this interview. yeah, not something that's easy or clear to work with at all really. Interesting yes, but god help me

Let's talk... Deep Sea Dead Zone's new album, Same Joke Twice, is now OUT! Get it at your local music store or digital storefront or just listen on Inkify or SeaTube!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's got sluggies on the back, which is how you know it's good (who cares about the band members? If you wanted to see inklings, just go outside).
(Interview coming later! this took all day to finish and i took a pancake break. Feel free to send asks; I'll include them in the interview!)

update: Springfest dialogue came in clutch. The answer is:

YAYYYY CHICKEN LIVES
OK. . . seems i missed the whole 'chickens are controversial in splatoon' thing. . . why?
To put it short there's evidence both for and against them existing, and this is without me actually looking anything up so i might be missing something.
cases for chickens being extant: there's been chickens present in SOME form in several splatfests, they're not mammals so they're not NECESSARILY extinct, despite being domesticated animals and thus being unlikely to survive it doesn't mean it'd be IMPOSSIBLE because pigeons and other relatively human-dependent birds still survive in Splatoon, and of course there are many instances of Eggs being a staple in inkling culinary culture. egg is everywhere
cases for chickens being extinct: we only actually See chickens (or chicken, as in food) in splatfest art and splatfest dialogue which isn't (or at least definitely wasn't until Splatoon 3) canon-compliant at all. We havent actually seen chickens in-universe to my knowledge, nor had them mentioned outside splatfest. probably the biggest nail in the coffin is that there IS a chicken statue in Splatsville, and typically when there are big animal statues in the cities those are statues depicting extinct animals. this is something from an interview that touched on the crane and tortoise statues in Inkopolis Square; which also confirms that it wasn't JUST MAMMALS that suffered and went extinct, it was also other miscellaneous land animals and even random birds which I think me and initially a lot of other people thought were just. Fine and safe. But if a random bird like a crane can be extinct now then chickens are absolutely not safe just because they're not mammals. although eggs are in like every food it's not really been confirmed in any way that those are CHICKEN eggs (although that is the most likely), they could as well be farming domesticated pigeons or something
So really it's a big case of no real confirmation they DO exist, but also no real confirmation they DON'T exist, but also the only context we see them in-universe is in a context where every other animal depicted there IS extinct and it's like a lore thing. So the existence of eggs is a big hint TOWARDS them existing but could easily mean nothing whereas the other one is more in line with proving they do not exist. it is a very uncertain situation for the chicken
HOWEVER!!!!!! there is hope for the chicken. splatfests in Splatoon 3 have had more in-universe accurate themes and dialogue so far (meaning they dont randomly make up shit like "marina's landlord is a narwhal" and "inklings eat red meat" or whatever the fuck in that sea food vs mountain food one we didnt even have that one it was regional). SO THIS MEANS! in the next splatfest we Could get a somewhat stable answer to if chickens exist or not. of course the other 2 options are extinct animals whereas the chicken is 50/50. i'm HOPING the dialogue touches upon this fact and doesn't just talk about all of those like they just Exist. basically we are very close to some kind of progress on this issue that would be Somewhat credible because while splatfest dialogue has never been a credible source in the past, it has been WAY better in S3
TL;DR we just don't know. Chickens are a mystery

I made a Console-Style Splatoon Font
I had the idea to make pixelated console style versions of some of the Splatoon fonts and I started with the Alterna script
You can download it if you want to use it!
Tumblr media
I based it off of the Fixedsys font, which is a computer font you're probably familiar with and also happens to be the oldest font that was part of Windows

I want to see the evidence of inklings eating feral octopus. It sounds really cool. And also fucked up since they also eat salmonids as well.
Everyone's eating everyone.
i'm fascinated that i got two asks with this question within like the 20 minutes i spent making an omelette (i will only be answering 1 because it's the same answer). Anyway there's probably some people who thought the evidence was the sea food VS mountain food splatfest art where they just have a whole ass squid on the plate. Not the case (splatfest art is rarely credible at all)
However this art and source IS credible:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A makomart ad that also appears in game (at least I'm pretty sure it does, but not checking right now) includes what VERY CLEARLY looks to be. An octopus prepared for cooking
(Unrelated, but the octopus also seems to only have 1 row of suckers and very few of those, so it could play into a canon reason why Octolings only have one row of suckers. Maybe octopuses as a whole evolved this way?)

btw no idea why this got 200 notes but i'm glad like 200 more people are aware of the state of chickens in splatoon canon i guess. did you guys know there's solid evidence that the inklings eat feral supposedly aquatic octopus

If you got poor impulse control: I can't offer a bad idea but a cute one: an a octo/inklink holding a ridiculously fluffy pet chicken.
this would be a really good idea if chickens weren't the most controversial animal in splatoon in relation to if they are extant or not. thank you for the idea i want to hold a chicken badly

Re-reading the latest interview, with them mentioning the octarians metamorphosis does this mean that octolings ARE derived from the tentacle cuttings, not normal reproduction like we thought before? Confusing
The wording in that interview IS really confusing and weird, i do still think they're meant to be totally different things though as that has been stated before in an interview too. though overall they keep going back and forth with it in interviews and tidbits that makes it super hard to give a "yes this is totally 100% confirmable canon" answer. i do still think octarians and octolings are different things and the wording in that interview was just super odd!!!!!!!!!!!

I bet Rig Coastley peaked on Inkopolis charts in the early 90's, but in the Deepsea he's a top dogfish in the 2010's
