"Flip open the page. It’s time for you to be emotionally invested in the very normal life of a fantasy character. These fantasy coming-of-age stories have no big quest — it’s literally just a coming-of-age story that takes place in a fantasy setting.
Sometimes, we don’t want to read about someone defeating the fated dragon that has lurked on the western edge of the dark grove. We don’t want a chosen one to fulfill their destiny. We could even do without a bevy of hapless heroes who just had to set out on a quest. Instead, we would much rather prefer to read about someone growing up as best they can without too much fuss. These are those stories."
When this young reader came to our table Saturday, her grandmother guided her to look at the books and study the covers to see if anything spoke to her. No pressure, just space. It was beautiful to watch the interaction.
We secretly hoped that Wildseed Witch by Marti Dumas would appeal to the reader since it was a middle-grade title about Black Witches, but sat quietly as they studied the covers and answered questions if they asked.
Once they chose Wildseed Witch, we raved about Hasani, her coven, and the richness of the Black girl magic that enfuse the book. ✨️

What did you like about the book? Hasani has two summer goals, and one of them is easy: boost her makeup YouTube channel. With her cheery attitude and natural talent, gaining followers should be no sweat. But the second summer goal – getting…
What are the publisher's weekly Children's Sneak Previews and how do they decide which books will be included? The Spring 2022 preview was published today. Thanks!
This question made me laugh, because you are telling me that the Publishers Weekly Children's Sneak Preview was published today -- (which was more info than I already had, I hadn't read PW yet today) -- and that you, evidently, saw it or read it (which I hadn't).... and you are asking ME what it is? Like... you tell me, kid, you're the expert!
Anyway, it's pretty straightforward -- as it says on the tin, it's .... a sneak preview. Of books that are coming out in Spring 2022. Listed by imprint. These preview posts come out twice a year, I believe - Fall preview in February or so (for that year), Spring preview (for the following year) in July or so.
This approximates the timing that bookstores use for when they are buying new books -- like, in the next few weeks, book buyers at stores are probably about to start looking at catalogues for Spring 2022 and buying for that season in Fall. So this might give them reminders to keep an eye out for such-and-such or to make sure to investigate imprint x that they didn't know about.
I don't know how they decide what to include. I would assume that the person listed as compiling them either looks at the catalogues and decide what seems interesting or noteworthy to them, or they ASK the publisher "hey, what 3 to 5 books or so per imprint do you want us to highlight in this spring previews thing?"
Anyway, it's by far NOT a comprehensive list of everything that is coming out from every publisher, it's just exactly what it says -- a sneak preview. Implying a TASTE of what is to come. (Also, IMO, the way it's laid out, nobody will ever get to the end until they skip there because it's just way too long and dense! So I'm not sure how useful it is in practice.)
The thing that IS really cool about these lists is that VERY small imprints and publishers are also included, the ones that might easily never make it to other kinds of "roundups" of titles that tend to be dominated by the major imprints -- it's kind of nice to see an even playing field, even if it means that lots of books from major publishers simply cannot be featured for lack of space.
I'll tell you MY books that are in it - yes they are both in the A's. TBH I stopped reading and started really skimming around the C's, so I might have missed one or two. But anyway - I caught two, and I'm sure I have at least 20 books coming out from various imprints in Spring, so... whatever, basically.
* Abrams/Amulet - Wildseed Witch by Marti Dumas, the first in a series about Hasani, a teen girl from a non-witch family who discovers her magical ability and earns a scholarship to a fancy, literal charm school
* Algonquin - A Pretty Implausible Premise by Karen Rivers, focusing on the budding romance between two teen elite athletes who have given up their sports and Olympic dreams because they are haunted by the ghosts of their pasts.
To counteract whatever 2022 may bring, and to keep my shelves from housing books I don’t like or won’t like, I plan to make heavy use of my library again, arcs from work, and only purchasing books after I’ve read them, not including 6 certain books. But my hope is to get arcs for those too.
We looooved Wildseed Witch and Wildseed Witch: Charmed Life, a middle grade duology centered on Hasani her coven members, Angelique and Dee. Swipe to learn more about the young trio redefining the power of three.
Regardless of your age, the series if the perfect companion for a Soft Black Girl Summer, from glittery eye shadow and dancing swans, to double rainbows and vibrant flowers.
Hasani is the only wildseed in the bunch. Magic is cool and all, but how can you control what you don’t even know you have? While being a green witch is hard, it doesnt stop Hasani from growing a youtuber channel with 1M followers and landing a spot of the Mathletes team. Her familiar is the super adorable kitten Othello!!
First daughter of a first daughter, Angelique is the one everyone wants to be. Luckily, Angelique wants to be Angelique, too. Angelique is 100% living the Charmed Girl life, and is also an math and coding whiz.
Dee is an ArtistKid with a coding game so tight she doesn’t even use magic to boost it. You can catch her chilling at galleries or roaming for street art, but where you WON’T catch her is on the internet. Dee loves representing the FemmeBoi life.

🌼 About Wildseed Witch
Publisher: Amulet Books (May 10, 2022)
Hardcover: 352 pages
A fun middle-grade contemporary fantasy with an all-BIPOC cast, about a social-media-loving tween who gets sent to an ultra-private witch camp
Hasani’s post-seventh-grade summer to-do list is pretty simple: get a bigger following for her makeup YouTube channel and figure out how to get her parents back together. What she does NOT expect is that an emotional outburst will spark a latent magical ability in her. Or that the magic will be strong enough to attract the attention of witches. Or that before she can say #BlackGirlMagic, she’ll be shipped off on a scholarship to a fancy finishing school for talented young ladies.
While the other girls have always known they were destined to be witches, Hasani is a Wildseed––a stray witch from a family of non-witches, with no background knowledge, no way to control her magic, and a lot to catch up on. “Wildseed” may be an insult that the other girls throw at her, but Wildseeds are more powerful than they know. And Hasani will learn that there are ways to use magic and thrive that can never be taught in a classroom.
Hasani's journey continues this Tuesday with the release of Charmed Life, book two of the Wildseed Witch series!!
Marti Dumas will join Sistah Scifi Wine Down Wednesday on May 3rd. Come through!! Registration link in bio: @sistahscifi | www.sistahscifi.com | https://sistahscifi.com/pages/events.

We will be discussing the series with Marti Dumas on Sistah Scifi Wine Down Wednesday on May 3rd.
About Charmed Life:
After a summer of being the worst witch at a fancy witch school, Hasani can’t wait to get back to the peace and normalcy of Riverbend Middle where she knows all the rules and is destined to be captain of the Mathletes. There are a few little hiccups to work out—like how she’s going to tell her best friend that she’s a witch—but even though the other two members of Hasani’s coven have joined her friend group and her school, there’s no reason to think that eighth grade won’t be smooth sailing . . . That is until her former friend (and fellow witch) LaToya shows up.
