ASOWAR & APOSAS side by side❤️‍🔥
I can't believe it's already been a year since one of my favorite duology concluded, I was so in love with the world of Sonande that I made fanart for each release to help me wait. Time isn't real 😭

a song of wraiths and ruin // roseanne a. brown
first published: 2020 read: 19 february 2024 – 29 february 2024 pages: 472 format: paperback
genres: fiction, young adult, fantasy, mythology (african-inspired), romance favourite character(s): the kestrel, karina least favourite character(s): farid
rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑 thoughts: i had a really good time reading a song of wraiths and ruin! it reminded me of quite a few similar books that i've read over the years, like raybearer, witches steeped in gold, and the final strife for example (and i felt it was definitely better than the latter two).
keeping my review short and sweet because i think generally this is just quite in line with books i've enjoyed in the past. i thought the worldbuilding was stellar, the characters were well crafted (unpopular opinion but i liked karina more than malik; it took a lot longer for me to come around to him!), i just loved all the cultural and fantastical elements that drew from various african cultures. it's a fairly chunky book but it didn't even feel like it. there was a big twist that i saw coming (i didn't trust [REDACTED] from the very beginning 😒) but what unfolded following the revelation had me locked in.
i think it may lose a star because at times i felt it was almost indistinguishable from similar books in its genre, both in terms of worldbuilding and plot points. it's not massively innovative but again, this may be just because i kept drawing comparisons to other books. i felt that it also got a little convoluted as it was wrapping up, and i had to go along with it without necessarily entirely understanding how or why certain things were happening.
very much excited to read the sequel, which i went out and bought a few hours before finishing this book!

Y'all I love this duology so much 🥺 and the anxiety rep! The author recently said she's working on something new in the same universe and I NEED.

For Malik, the Solstasia festival is a chance to escape his war-stricken home and start a new life with his sisters in the prosperous desert city of Ziran. But when a vengeful spirit abducts his younger sister, Nadia, as payment to enter the city, Malik strikes a fatal deal--kill Karina, Crown Princess of Ziran, for Nadia's freedom.
But Karina has deadly aspirations of her own. Her mother, the Sultana, has been assassinated; her court threatens mutiny; and Solstasia looms like a knife over her neck. Grief-stricken, Karina decides to resurrect her mother through ancient magic . . . requiring the beating heart of a king. And she knows just how to obtain one: by offering her hand in marriage to the victor of the Solstasia competition.
When Malik rigs his way into the contest, they are set on a heart-pounding course to destroy each other. But as attraction flares between them and ancient evils stir, will they be able to see their tasks to the death?

Book 3/52 for my 2023 book challenge
This may be my favorite book this year so far! I kept on counting down the hours till I got home from work so I can get home read.
All 466 pages take place over the course of 1 week. Which is a bit too short in my opinion for a romance to fully blossom between 2 characters, but the author wrote the development well enough.
The world building was fun and the fact it all takes place in one city with the princess craving the rest of the world but unable to travel makes it engaging for the reader. Makes it so we want to see the rest of the world as much as Karina. The magic system wasn't explained in a way that I truly understood, I hope in the sequel it is explained better.
It does show the impacts of trauma for the characters. Malik as anxiety and depression. Just so much anxiety, I relate to this guy, I too am afraid all the time every day. His anxiety attacks had me pausing in my reading for how overwhelming it kept making me. And Karina is repressing so much it is literally causing her physically harm.
Overall I am excited to read the next book in this duology! It has definitely raised my standards for the rest of the books I'll be reading this year.

a psalm of storms and silence // roseanne a. brown
first published: 2021 read: 12 march 2024 – 26 march 2024 pages: 568 format: paperback
genres: fiction, young adult, fantasy, mythology (african-inspired), romance favourite character(s): karina! least favourite character(s): farid can still choke!
rating: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗 thoughts: i was surprised that i enjoyed APOSAS more than ASOWAR! i feel like the story and the writing came into its own, and therefore i spent far less time comparing this book to others i've read, making it a more enjoyable reading experience overall.
as with book one, the worldbuilding and character writing continued to astound. i really liked the increased depth written into our two main characters, karina and malik. the direction the author went in with malik's character was so intriguing and he felt more multifaceted than he previously did, even if i still don't like him nearly as much as i do karina. it was joyful to see karina's character growth throughout the duology. i wish we had gotten slightly more depth into hanane, but i did enjoy how she was woven into the plot. farid was a very well-written villain despite my burning hatred for him, and his dynamic with hanane and malik was so interesting.
[LIGHT SPOILER] there is a chapter written around a character's suicide ideation that i think was incredibly well written, and i think generally the approach to incorporating anxiety, panic attacks etc. into the narrative has been done with a lot of care. i thought the chapter was a standout moment of writing.
i would love to see more of what roseanne a. brown writes! this was a solid duology and it's rare to find a series where there isn't a drop in quality as the books continue, never mind one where they actually improve.
