Far from the outright disaster it’s made out to be, but even I can concede this isn’t very good. Flashes of the movie that might have been with a less hackneyed screenplay or a more discerning directorial eye are visible throughout, but alas. Mariah the actress is undoubtedly in over her head here, though the foundation for what she’d go on to achieve in Precious was already there. Mariah the music supervisor? Oscar.
