59. Blissfully Yours (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2002)
The tedious minutiae of the everyday gradually gives way to the boundless, extracorporeal realm of the soul. Sensual, and not just in the sexual sense: this is a film you can smell, taste, and feel. There’s also a palpable sense that Weerasethakul is setting out to establish the audiovisual language of a new Thai cinema here, taking extra care to document its winding roads, indigenous vegetation, the distinct buzzing of native insects, and luxuriating in them.
