Uintatherium Has Breakfast
Tumblr media
In the hot and humid forests of Eocene North America around 56 million years ago, Uintatherium anceps is having breakfast. Despite its resemblance to modern rhinoceroses, Uintatherium was not related to them but rather belonged to an extinct order of mammals known as the Dinocerata, which lived between the Paleocene and Eocene epochs of the early Cenozoic Era. One 2015 study has suggested a closer relationship between Dinocerata on the one hand and an order of South American hoofed mammals, also extinct, called the Xenungulata.

Animal of the Day!
Uintatherium (Uintatherium anceps)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Tokyo National Museum of Nature and Science)
Conservation Status- Extinct
Habitat- North America
Estimated Size (Weight/Length)- 2 tonnes; 4 m
Diet- Aquatic plants; Shrubs
Time Period- Eocene
Cool Facts- With the body of a rhino, the head of a hippo, and the tusks of a boar, the Uintatherium is one of the largest land animals to ever exist in North America. The teeth were larger on the male and were most likely used as a form of sexual selection or fighting for mates. Otherwise, they were used to pull plants out from the water as it is suspected Uintatherium could walk along river beds like modern hippos. Despite all the evidence pointing against it, when first discovered Uintatherium was assumed to be a carnivore due to its ferocious teeth.
Rating- 13/10 (Despite the teeth, it’s not a smilodon.)

(temporal range: 56-34mio. years ago)
[text from the Wikipedia article, see also link above]
Uintatherium ("Beast of the Uinta Mountains") is an extinct genus of herbivorous mammal that lived during the Eocene epoch. Two species are currently recognized: U. anceps from the United States during the Early to Middle Eocene (56–38 million years ago) and U. insperatus of Middle to Late Eocene (48–34 million years ago) China.

Paleovember 2022, Uintatherium!
A VERY large mammal from the late Eocene, this rhino-like beast is already weird enough with its saber teeth and six ossicones…but in the 1870s when it’s remains were discovered, it was initially reconstructed as a strange elephantine creature with moose antlers.

I think my favorite aspect of this stop motion short is the fact that the other animals used in it have "Paleofail" designs.

GOLGOLIATH (Ground/Ghost) & CRANIEMBERG (Ice/Ghost)
GOLGOLIATH (Golgotha/Goliath) The tar pit Pokemon. Its body is made of tar, brought to life by the restless souls of all the pokemon that perished trapped in it. It uses their bones as armor to protect its soft, sticky body. The shape of its body resembles a Paraceratherium and the skulls from its armor are those of a Brontotherium/Megacerops, a Woolly Mammoth (Upside down) and a Woolly Rhino

CRANIEMBERG (Cranium/Iceberg/Cronenberg) The glacier Pokemon Its body is made of Glaciar ice and compacted snow, reanimated by the souls of the many pokemon forever trapped in it. It uses their bones as weapons to hunt for its prey. Its main body is shaped like a Megatherium and the skulls from its armor are those of an Uintatherium, a Smilodon and an Arsinotherium (upside down)

CRANIEMBERG's striped body is based on "Striped Icebergs" a phenomena in which icebergs melt and froze again over time, forming layers of different colors due to the impurities in the water and the difference in densities
