5 Jamaicans Named In Top 200 Best Singers of All Time by Rolling Stones

When Rolling Stone, the iconic five-decade pop music magazine, released its Top 200 Singers Of All Time on January 1, 2023, nobody would have been surprised to find at least a few prominent Jamaicans populating the list, which was topped by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Billie Holiday, and Sam Cooke. While the list predictably included the reggae legend Bob Marley (at number 98), he was only the 3rd highest ranked of the magazine’s five Jamaicans.

The widely beloved and recently departed Toots Hibbert made the list at number 94. Three other Jamaicans with longstanding ties to VP Records were also included. The highest ranked of these was none other than the Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Emmanuel Brown, at number 67 (highest among all Jamaicans), who sat just behind and just ahead of contemporary Caribbean superstar Rihanna at number 68 and just behind David Ruffin of The Temptations, good company indeed. “His soulfulness was unimpeachable,” according to writer Michaelangelo Matos. This acclaim should come as no surprise, since Brown had been previously recognized by National Public Radio as one of the world’s 50 Great Voices in 2010.

Dennis Brown would see 13 LPs on VP Records and five on Greensleeves during his career – more than any other VP Music Group artist. VP paid tribute to Dennis Brown in 2016 with an all-star cast of performers revisiting his catalog. In 2018, VP released King Jammy Presents Dennis Brown Tracks Of Life, another tribute bringing the singer’s original master tapes back to life with new combinations.

According to writer Noah Schactman, ‘if an airhorn could sing,’ it might be comparable to the penetrating voice of Barrington Levy, ranked number 119 on the list. Levy’s career traces to the earliest years of VP Records. Three of the company’s first singles on its Roots From The Yard imprint in 1979 were Levy’s “Revelation,” “Collie Weed,” and “A Yah Me Deh.” After being a major force in the 1980s, Levy stepped up his game at the end of the decade and into the 1990s with his major hit covers of Bob ndy’s “Too Experienced” and “My Time.” VP released his definitive greatest hits anthology, Too Experienced, in 1998.

Also included on the list is one of Jamaica’s great voices of the 1990s and 2000s, Luciano. Writer Michael Goldwasser, who also produced the singer, says that Luciano has “a range that extends from a rich baritone up to a strong falsetto. And he’s a master of the lost art of harmonizing.”

Luciano stepped into the reggae spotlight after the tragic passing of Garnet Silk in December 1994, becoming the next champion of dancehall’s revived cultural sound. “Poor And Simple” from 1993 was his first release on VP, followed by “One Way Ticket” and “Jah Is Alive,” and the album One Way Ticket in 1994, all produced by Fatis Burrell for Xterminator. Luciano had major label releases through Chris Blackwell’s Island Jamaica in 1995 and 1996 but would reconnect with VP starting in 1999 with the outstanding Sweep Over My Soul. Eight more albums followed, including Serious Times in 2004 and its enduring anthem, “Give Praises.” Luciano has remained active, consistent, and relevant to the present.

VP offers congratulations to these five artists for this well-deserved recognition and for their exceptional legacies in bringing reggae and Jamaican culture to the world.

Got tired of piecing by hand after like 8 hst blocks lol. So I sat down with my beautiful and heavy sewing machine to finally work out the tension issues.* I've also already deviated from my original plan to just sew a bunch of hst oriented in the same direction together to this diamond and triangle pattern and before someone tells me there is a much less labor intensive way of working it I know! This is where indecision gets a person! Also it's my first quilt so..

*by work out the issues I mean I sat down with her and it was miraculously working perfectly. I am now too scared to put her back in the box out of fear she will start skipping stitches again and have decided to name her Superstition.

OK, I’m sorry...but who the HELL works at Rolling Stone and picked the people who picked that list of the “200 Greatest Singers of All Time”? Because that list is just bullshit.

Not all the artists on the list are bullshit, mind you. A lot of them DO deserve to be on there.

But Carrie Underwood was ranked at 158, Christina Aguilera was ranked in the 140′s, ROGER DALTREY was ranked at 109...and TAYLOR SWIFT was ranked at 102?

Taylor Swift is a great songwriter, and a good singer, but not a better singer than Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, or Roger Daltrey. She doesn’t even have much of a vocal range.

And the fact that she ranked near the middle while those people ranked under her, and Celine Dion and Michael Jackson didn’t even make the list????!!!! That is serious bullshit.

Announced and shared yesterday (April 25), the album comes after the singer and former One Direction member embarked on two world tours over the past three years – playing just shy of 200 shows globally.

Now, a variety of performances from both tours – the ‘Louis Tomlinson World Tour’ and the ‘Faith in the Future World Tour’ – have been compiled into a new live album, which is available now.

Fifteen songs are included in the tracklist, and each was recorded in a different city, at a different show from across the three-year run. The album comes in both digital and physical formats, and features his singles including ‘Bigger Than Me’, ‘We Made It, ‘Walls’ and ‘Out Of My System’, alongside fan favourite album tracks, all released live for the very first time.

“I’ve been lucky enough to spend the last 3 years touring the world twice over. The feeling I get sharing those live moments will be with me forever,” Tomlinson said in a statement. “To be able to record these songs from all over the world and put them out as an album like this feels so special, and a real tribute to the fans who make each and every show feel unique and incredible. Thank you! Enjoy!”

There are four exclusive tracks split between the physical editions of ‘Live’, including a special version of the One Direction classic ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go’ – which is available only on the double CD.

Accompanying video clips of compiled tour footage will be shared on Louis’s social channels to support the release, showcasing a glimpse into his past three years on the road and 170 performances.

At time of writing, Tomlinson has shared two huge solo albums since departing from One Direction. His debut album arrived in the firm of 2020’s ‘Walls’, which has sold over 1.5 million copies, and the follow-up was called ‘Faith In The Future’. The latter went to Number One in the UK, Spain and Belgium, and Top 5 in the USA, Australia, New Zealand and across Europe.

Since May last year, Tomlinson has been on his ‘Faith In The Future World Tour’, which hits South America next month for its final leg. From there, the vocalist has a number of festival appearances lined up for the summer. Find remaining tickets to his shows here.

Swift’s gambles have paid off handsomely over the past year.

Her massive The Eras stadium tour, which began in March after she controversially put all the tickets on sale at once, crashing Ticketmaster and sparking mass hysteria, grossed an estimated $906.1 million in 2023 and is poised to become the highest-grossing global tour of all time before it wraps in December, according to Billboard.

The Golden Globe-nominated Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film, taped during her six-show run at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., in August, has grossed over $261.6 million worldwide since its October opening, according to AMC Theatres Entertainment. In January, the publicly traded movie-house chain announced that the film’s box-office take made it the highest-grossing concert/documentary picture ever released, surpassing Michael Jackson’s 2009 This Is It. Once again blazing a new path, Swift made a groundbreaking distribution deal directly with AMC Theaters instead of linking with a film studio.

Swift has shaken up the catalog market, too. When Scooter Braun infuriated her by acquiring the master recordings of her first six albums through his Ithaca Holdings and then sold them to investment firm Shamrock Capital at a profit, Swift rerecorded the albums with loving precision and added bonus tracks to the new releases. They performed phenomenally well, as she deftly used her tour to promote them. When her latest rerecording (and 14th studio album overall), 1989 (Taylor’s Version), spent its fifth week at atop the Billboard 200 at the end of 2023, Swift beat Elvis Presley’s record for the most weeks at No. 1 by a solo artist. Her industry market share last year was 1.72%. If she were her own genre, she’d rank ninth for 2023 — bigger than jazz.

On the day it was officially announced that Wang Yibo became the chief spokesperson for YaYa down jackets, the total online transactions in all channels reached 200 million+; Douyin single-day women's clothing top 1; Tmall clothing live broadcast TOP 1, Tmall men's clothing TOP 1, Tmall women's down jackets TOP 1 , Tmall men’s down jacket TOP1.

Q: How did you come up with the idea of asking Wang Yibo to be your spokesperson?

Suki : Yaya has a brand development history of more than 50 years. After the share reorganization in 2020, we vigorously promoted the rejuvenation strategy. The spokesperson is our effective contact point with consumers.

Wang Yibo is a new generation artist born after 1995. He has multiple identities such as actor, singer, race car driver, and dancer. He has both national and commercial influence.

Q: Are there any challenges in this collaboration?

Suki : Yes, the cooperation with Wang Yibo itself is also a process of testing the strength of the brand . We noticed that Wang Yibo has many endorsements, including endorsements for high-end luxury brands and TOP endorsements in various sub-categories. As a brand in the down jacket subcategory, YaYa has experienced relatively rapid growth in market performance after the share reorganization in recent years. Combined with the brand's accumulation and renewal of brand assets over more than 50 years, it finally successfully passed the layer-by-layer review of the artist team and the demands of both parties. And the fit is very high.

Of course, cooperation with top-notch artists does not happen overnight. It ends with a Weibo post on the day of the official announcement. The core test is the brand's ability to undertake, whether it is your products, operations or brand marketing, the ability to undertake will be tens of millions of times. Q: How do you feel about working with Wang Yibo’s team overall?

Suki : Professional . Q: What is the logic behind choosing these celebrities to sign?

The existence of male spokespersons is to increase the proportion of Yaya men's clothing . YaYa's current market sales situation shows that the proportion of women's clothing is higher than that of men's clothing. In addition to Wang Yibo, we also cooperate with male artists such as Chen Zheyuan, Cheng Lei, and Zhou Yiran . They are all niche actors who have produced hit dramas in recent years and have their own loyal fan groups. I've talked before about how Barbie has had hundreds of careers. The official count from Mattel is "over 200", which no doubt is an unspecific number because of how difficult it is to define. Are we talking about just playline dolls, or including careers that were represented in collectibles? If Barbie is in the likeness of a celebrity, is she representing that celebrity's career? Are bakery chef, cookie chef, and cupcake chef functionally different careers, or are they three variations on the same?

Mattel have put so much emphasis on expanding the careers that Barbie can hold - including the Career of the Year line, and increasing the number of Barbies depicting her as a woman in STEM. In the past I've done some posts detailing some of her more common careers: astronaut, ballerina, Olympian, teacher, military, air travel.

But it did get me thinking, what are Barbie's most common careers and what does it say about the Barbie line that this is the case?

Using Wikipedia as my main source, these were the top careers. (I am not counting Fashion Model because not only was this the OG Barbie career, every Silkstone doll for 20 years was technically a Fashion Model, and you could make an argument that so are most Barbies of unspecified vocation depicted in fashionable attire.)

Doctor*: 36

School Teacher**: 28

Food Service Employee (non-Chef): 23

Chef: 21

Musician / Singer: 20 each

Actor: 17

Veterinarian: 14

Non-food service retail: 13

Astronaut: 11

*This includes Doctor, Baby Doctor, Eye Doctor, Surgeon, Army Medic and Dentist, but not Nurse, Paramedic or Vet.

** Including any teachers that appeared to be depicting a traditional classroom, and excluding e.g. sports coaches and other apparent extra-curricular subjects.

I make no claims that this is a completely comprehensive list, but it certainly shows some trends. I am not sure that I would have picked Barbie's most prominent career (outside of Fashion Model) being Doctor, but it makes sense. After all, doctors are people that children are taught to look up to, are likely to encounter moderately often, and who have attire and props that are very distinctive.

Of the different kinds of doctor Barbie has been, she has been a pediatrician 14 times. This also makes sense, as it is the kind of doctor most children would have the most association with. (However, it is also one of the more female-dominated fields of medicine.)

Incidentally, when I was growing up much was made of the fact that Barbie was identified as a "Baby Doctor" or a "Children's Doctor", but these days some Barbies are in fact identified unambiguously as Paediatricians.

This also explains why "teacher" is so high on the list - another career that children are taught to respect and which children have a significant amount of day to day experience of. And of course, it doesn't take too much thought to consider why Musician, Singer and Actress are highly represented - these are careers that are perceived as glamorous and exciting, and as such have wide appeal.

I have plenty more to say on this subject but this post is already really long so I will save the rest and call this... part 1...
