I don't know about you, but I hate reading how another person's life was ruined because someone decided to burn another's life down over fandom pettiness.
It's disheartening and frankly disgusting to see/read. As is seeing how many of you now are considering leaving the fandom because of it out of fear, etc. You shouldn't have to leave a place you felt safe to be yourselves in because of any of that nonsense, but I understand if you need to and wish you all the best.
There was a post the other day that talked about how Fandom is supposed to be a community, a safe place from RL, not Hell, not another place meant to torture. And it's true. That's what I remember when I first joined the Star Trek fandom back in the days of message boards. It was a community where you lifted people up, not tear them down, ruin their lives. It was a place of hope and love. Somehow we lost that.
I am so sorry for everyone affected by this in all fandoms. Because, unfortunately, it's not just happening in the TG/TGM fandom, but in loads of other fandoms as well and has been for ages now I've noticed for ridiculous reasons like ships someone enjoys or topics they write about, etc.
I don't know where we as a society decided it was right to ruin someone's life because of a difference in opinion or a fic they wrote or whatever slight it was, but we need to get that vile thinking out now and stamp it out for good. There is too much evil in the world already. We don't need to add to it with vindictiveness, jealousy, and just plain straight-up disgusting behavior in our safe spaces, too.
Look, I don't post a lot of these long text "Knock it the hell off" posts. But seeing all the pain and fear now in my community, knowing there are so many others out there in others (because I myself experienced it in other fandoms as well), well, that just makes me furious and heartbroken for all those out there who just want a place to belong, to be understood.
I try to be welcoming to all who interact with me. I hope that comes across as such for the very reason I've been where others have been, know how terrifying it is to leave a comment, interact with a post on here, etc, that I get how many spoons it takes to interact with some mysterious stranger online.
That said, I truly am sorry for everyone who has been let down by their fandom at some time. You didn't deserve it. No one does. You deserve a place where you are welcomed, accepted. Everyone does.
And to those who are instigating this, attacking others, ruining people's lives, knock it the hell off!
