Anime of the day: Tokyo 24-ku
Tumblr media
Alt title: Tokyo 24th Ward
Released: 2022
The 24th ward utilizes a special surveillance system, Hazard Cast, that predicts accidents before they happen. However, it isn’t a perfect system. A long time ago Asami’s high school caught on fire and she died. Her passing had a great impact on her friends Ran and Shuuta, and her brother Kouki. Ran, Shuuta, and Kouki were quite close friends, but after Asami, they grew apart. Ran works on his dream to be a famous street artist, Kouki helps manage Hazard Cast, and Shuuta is still stuck in the past. After the trio reunite to commemorate the loss’ from the fire, they receive a strange phone call from what seems to be Asami’s voice. The group is shown the future, but will they be able to change it’s course?

happy birthday mikudayo(fanloid) !!!!! [17 sep]
Tumblr media
mikudayo is a derivative character created in the image of hatsune miku. she is a human-size mascot costume based off of the hatsune miku nendoroid, how ever the costume was clumsy and awkward. she first appeared in 2011 in "Tokyo Game Show 2011", where she was promoting project mirai, however mikudayo scared the children there. mikudayos name was officially recognised in apr 2012, and mikudayo herself became an official member of the cfm line up on 24 sep 2012. she is often depicted as evil in the fandom. the fanloid fandom wiki says mikudayo first appeared on 11 sep 2011, however the vocaloid fandom wiki says it was 17 sep 2011. a youtube video uploaded on 19 sep 2011 by rlgofs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP7BPyfTLOA) says it was 18 sep 2011, and i could see the difference between the 17th and 18th being just time zones, so ive chosen to go with the 17th. mikudayo has gotten multiple art exhibitions, including one in yokohama which features the art of cha_bo (cha_bo39 on twt). this was held in 2016 from 1 may to 8 may at the Hachiban-kan venue in Naka-ku. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUDQC7qOX5Y here is a video showing it in more detail. much of the art is creepy and horror-like, and shows mikudayos creepiness

List of Anime Produced by NitroPlus:
This information is from MAL and is only looking at TV anime.
Tumblr media
Steins;Gate, Psycho-Pass, Fate/Zero, Madoka, Fate/Zero 2nd Season, Psycho-Pass 2, Aldnoah.Zero, Gakkougurashi!
Suisei no Gargantia, Aldnoah.Zero Part 2, Psycho-Pass 3, Robotics;Notes, DRAMAtical Murder, Azur Lane, Buddy Daddies, Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu
Togainu no Chi, SoniAni: Super Sonico the Animation, Blassreiter, Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Gunslinger Stratos The Animation, Tokyo 24-ku, Revenger, Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic
Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru and Warau Arsnotoria Sun!
----
I haven’t watched all of these anime myself, but for the ones that I do know, a good chunk of them tend to have some queer aspect about them.
Steins;Gate: has Ruka/Luka, a character that is gender-conforming (I know that there tends to be heavy debate on whether or not Ruka is a trans character or an otokonoko character, which is a bit different and more like a Femboy identity). Regardless, Ruka is shown to struggle with gender identity and also has a canon crush on Okabe, the MC and a man.
(The image below is of Ruka stating “I want to be a girl!”).
Tumblr media
I’m not super well versed in Steins;Gate though (I watched it when it aired, but never got super invested in the series, games, and etc), so if anyone has anymore info on this character and series (in regards to queer aspects), feel free to share.
Psycho-Pass: I have only seen Season 1 (the other seasons are on my “To-Watch” list), but there is a canon lesbian couple in the series: Shion and Yayoi.
Tumblr media
They are shown post-coital and everything (like, in the bed, putting underwear back on, etc.). Shion, the one in the white lab coat in the image above is also stated as being bisexual over the LGBTQIA+ Wikia. They are more minor characters, but they aren’t just background characters either.
Madoka: I watched the show when it was airing back in the day. I haven’t seen any of the movies or spinoff stuff, but I do remember there being very heavy queer subtext (specifically yuri).
Tumblr media
Madoka and Homura are a huge yuri pairing in the anime community for a reason, lol.
DRAMAtical Murder & Togainu no Chi: Both of these anime were adaptations of Nitro+ video games. Those games were very GAY  and very sexually graphic and kinky. It’s been a while since I watched either anime, but I do know that they had to tone down these series down a bit.
Tumblr media
DRAMAtical Murder (I think the above image is from the game though).
Tumblr media
Togainu no Chi
Interestingly, MAL has Togainu no Chi labeled as a BL, but not DRAMAtical Murder.
Anyway, both of those shows are very gay.
Finally, Revenger: this is a currently airing anime. I haven’t watched it myself (I got too caught up in Buddy Daddies, which also caused me to fall behind on watching The Fire Hunter too, my brain can only do one anime at a time, lol). But, I do check out the discussion posts on this series over on MAL and r/anime from time to time to get an idea of how they are handling characters and themes.
And apparently one episode contains a gay brothel. Okay. I was also aware of the character: Nio.
Tumblr media
I checked out the official site before it aired, and I wanted to wait and see/hear how they handled Nio’s character. The official website describes Nio as 両性具, which is a word that is generally translated into English as hermaphrodite or androgenous, but not as intersex. Japanese also seems to deferentiate these words: 両性具有 vs. インターセックス (intaasekkusu). So, I’ve been a little uncertain of how this particular representation would play out, but regardless if it is well handled or not, the fact of the matter is that Nio’s character exists outside of the gender binary as well and is a queer character in this way.
Basically, what I’m getting at here, is that NitroPlus is an anime producer that has series which explore queer themes and has queer characters in them. Not everything they produce has queer elements to them. From what I remember of Suisei no Gargantia, for example, was pretty heternormative and straight, and one of the script writers for Buddy Daddies, Vio Shimokura, wrote for one other series: Tokyo 24-ku, which seems to lean more into “close childhood friends” category of writing with its male characters. But, I haven’t actually watched the show, so I can’t really say (this is just going off of the synopsis).
The other Buddy Daddies script writer, Yuuko Kakihara, has worked on a bunch of different series, but nothing that really stands out as being specifically queer in the sense of having same-sex relationships and whatnot. But, the company of NitroPlus itself hasn’t shied away from queer characters or themes before, either.
NitroPlus is producing Buddy Daddies along with PA Works, so I think it is important to think about what other series and kinds of content the production companies have made before too. It can add better context and layers when figuring out how to read the themes being presented in a series.

NO PUEDO ESPERAR PARA JUGARLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤤

YOU WAYCHED ID INVADED :?? sorry i havent met anyone whos watched it
do you have any reccs for anything similar 🙏🙏🙏
-🪱
yes i did!! just a few months back, and i loved it (i think i love it more and more as it marinates in my brain lmao)
so of course i recently mentioned it because of the deranged detective anime lol, though i'm an anime-only with that and with only one ep out so far it's kind of hard to say if i would recommend it as something similar to id:invaded? only similarity so far is in the detective who serial kills serial killers, no sci-fi element or anything (at least not so far)
for something actually similar, i would recommend psycho-pass! it's a bit darker? i mean like visually, like aesthetically. as in literally a darker color palette ahaha, but id:invaded reminded me a whole bunch of psycho-pass (which i'd watched a bit earlier and loved even more) so i would say for sure that's my top rec for something similar
akudama drive is... i think less directly similar, in terms of plot/themes/etc, but there's a vibe that's... maybe a bit in the same category? akudama drive is just imo less Serious and more like a bang bang fun action ride (though it's not just completely silly either, i enjoyed it quite a bit overall)
darker than black might also be a good fit if you don't mind an older series, the mc there (one of my favorites) has a similar-ish vibe to narihisago imo (not like identical or anything but they're like, idk, i think i would put them into roughly the same bucket of blorbo)
it all depends a bit on similar in what regard, i guess! characters? plot? the sci-fi aspect of it? or the detective/mystery aspect? or something else?
but imo can't go wrong with psycho-pass
the id:invaded director is working on overtake! this season btw, which is the f4 racing anime, so very different from id:invaded but still good stuff if you're into sports anime
you miiight also be interested in an upcoming series called special kid factory? i don't personally know much about it yet, since it's not released, but the id:invaded director is on the staff there too and the character designs will be by the id:invaded character designer. looks like it could be good or could be a total whiff, only time will tell
and speaking of the id:invaded character designer, if it's the character look you like, you could give hamatora a shot. same character designer there, though i didn't personally get that into hamatora (some series similar-ish to it that i preferred more were like... kekkai sensen and hakata tonkotsu ramens)
anyway lots of options! just if you look up a list of similar series and see something called tokyo 24-ku on it do not. do not watch that it was not good lmao

Machine translation tools for Japanese visual novels (2022)
Hi! Today I wanted to share some useful translations tools I have been using to play Japanese visual novels. I found many other guides, but most of them were published over 8 years ago and seemed a little bit outdated. Therefore I thought it would be a good idea to share some of the tools I have been using in the past two years. I have only used them for BL visual novels so far, but they have all been working pretty well! These days we are lucky to get official English releases of visual novels and I recommend supporting these, but there are a lot of games that have not been translated yet.
Machine translation might not be perfect, but it has definitely improved a lot within the past couple of years and it gives people the opportunity to play these untranslated games.
Textractor
Can be downloaded here for free.
One of the newer tools I have been using for a couple of years now. Very easy to use. you just open the game and Textractor, press ‘’Attach to game’’ and select which game you want. The dropdown menu next to it should now show multiple hooks.
Tumblr media
You might want to skip through some text in the game to find one that works correctly, but usually it is pretty easy to find one that works. In the example below I’m using it together with LoveDelivery’s new game Tokyo 24 Ku.
Tumblr media
In some cases it doesn’t immediately show a correct hook, so you might need to add a custom one. In this example I will be using Slow Damage’s Japanese version. I’m aware it’s getting an official translation, but keep in mind it’s just an example of how to use these hooks/translation tools. Also please skip through the tutorial of the game first (when Taku appears and wakes Towa up)
> Open the textractor folder and look for a text file called ''Saved Hooks''. If you don't have it don’t worry, you can just create a new text file and give it the same name.
>The next thing you should do is to find the folder Slow Damage is installed in and copy the file path. Then paste this in the ''Saved Hooks'' text document.
> Find the hook code. These can usually be found on forums like Aarinfantasy. Slow Damage’s code is  /HS65001#-1C@5C40:slowdamage.exe
>The ‘’Saved Hooks’’ text document should look something like this now. Make sure the spacing and everything is exactly like the picture below or it might not work.
Tumblr media
>If you open your game (Slow Damage in this case) this new hook should appear in the dropdown menu. You might have to try a few of them before you get the right one, make sure to check that it hooks all of the Japanese text and doesn’t skip any.
> After doing this check again if the new hook works. If it works it should look something like the screenshot below. If it’s still skipping certain parts of the dialogue (mostly the hiragana and katakana) the hook isn’t working yet.
>Alternative solution: I’ve heard from a couple of people that this method sometimes doesn’t work, but they found alternative solutions. First copy the hook code mentioned above. After this select ‘’Add Hook’’ in Textractor.
Tumblr media
Translation Aggregator
Can be downloaded for free here
An older tool that was previously used a lot with other tools like ITH. One of the reasons I didn’t put ITH in this list is because some versions of it stopped working for me after switching to a Windows 10 PC, so I think it’s just not very reliable to recommend it anymore when newer tools exist.
Translation Aggregator itself doesn't hook the text, though it does translate it. This means you need another tool like ITH or Textractor to hook it for you. I sometimes use Translation Aggregator because Textractor still gets a little bit buggy when you're playing certain games. One of the main problem I ran into is that it sometimes stops translating. In this case you can open Translation Aggregator and select different machine translation tools. Unfortunately it's a pretty old program so not all the translators work anymore, but some of the version I linked above still do. Make sure to press the icon next to the translator’s name so it automatically translates the text Textractor copies to your clipboard. It should look like the picture below (the screen on the right.)
Tumblr media
Sugoi Translator
Can be downloaded for free here, first link in the ‘’about’’ section.
One of the newest translations tools I have been trying recently. I have to say I'm very impressed with this one because it has an offline mode and also uses DeepL, one of the best machine translations you'll get. This one works pretty similarly to Translation Aggregator, but the quality of the translations and the interface is in my opinion quite an improvement. I could explain how to use it together with Textractor and DeepL, but you can watch an instruction video about that here! I think it's much easier to watch this than to follow text instructions. They have their own Discord server too, so I recommend joining it and asking questions there if you have any! It can be found in the description of the video.
Others
There's of course many other tools you could use, but these are the three I'm personally using at the moment. In the past I've used ITH and ITH VNR in combination with Translation Aggregator, which still works for a lot of older games. I'm sure there's still downloads of this available if you Google it. Another tool I've used for quite some time is Visual Novel Reader. I think you can actually play some English fan translations if you install this one. I just haven't used it for a long time, but it's probably worth checking out if the methods mentioned above don't work!
Once again just sharing my personal list of tools I use to play these games :) but I hope it could help someone!
